The document discusses initial ideas for a rap music magazine called "Rebel". The target audience would be 18-year-old American male Cameron, who likes hanging out with friends on weekends clubbing and drinking. The front cover would feature a medium close-up image of a rap artist in stereotypical clothing with the masthead in the top left. Bold colors like red, black, and yellow would be used. A double page spread would show a longshot of an artist occupying one third of the page to allow for article text. Photographs would use dark backgrounds and locations like alleys.

Up the Ratios is a non-profit organization dedicated to bridging the gap in STEM education for underprivileged students by providing free, high-quality learning opportunities in robotics and other STEM fields. Our mission is to empower the next generation of innovators, thinkers, and problem-solvers by offering a range of educational programs that foster curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
At Up the Ratios, we believe that every student, regardless of their socio-economic background, should have access to the tools and knowledge needed to succeed in today's technology-driven world. To achieve this, we host a variety of free classes, workshops, summer camps, and live lectures tailored to students from underserved communities. Our programs are designed to be engaging and hands-on, allowing students to explore the exciting world of robotics and STEM through practical, real-world applications.
Our free classes cover fundamental concepts in robotics, coding, and engineering, providing students with a strong foundation in these critical areas. Through our interactive workshops, students can dive deeper into specific topics, working on projects that challenge them to apply what they've learned and think creatively. Our summer camps offer an immersive experience where students can collaborate on larger projects, develop their teamwork skills, and gain confidence in their abilities.
In addition to our local programs, Up the Ratios is committed to making a global impact. We take donations of new and gently used robotics parts, which we then distribute to students and educational institutions in other countries. These donations help ensure that young learners worldwide have the resources they need to explore and excel in STEM fields. By supporting education in this way, we aim to nurture a global community of future leaders and innovators.
Our live lectures feature guest speakers from various STEM disciplines, including engineers, scientists, and industry professionals who share their knowledge and experiences with our students. These lectures provide valuable insights into potential career paths and inspire students to pursue their passions in STEM.
Up the Ratios relies on the generosity of donors and volunteers to continue our work. 1. Task 9- formal response
Title of magazine- I want to use the title of Rebel as it centres on what my target audience
for my magazine. The title will also be used as it is the favourite of the names I came up
with. It is the name I feel has the most in common with both the audience of rap music as
well as the people who create the music themselves.
Explanation of choice of genre- I wanted to do the genre of rap as it has a specific audience
which can be easily made to the audience. I have therefore chosen to use rap as it is easy to
recreate a rap magazine as they are very specific in their layout and the way that they look. I
have also chosen to use rap as my magazines genre as it is my favourite genre of music, and
I therefore feel the most comfortable writing about it.
Target audience. - My ideal person would be a person called Cameron who is of 18 years of
age. Cameron would be of black ethnicity and his nationality would be American. Cameron
is male. Cameron would be as person who is single, and would be someone who likes
hanging out with his friends. Cameron would hang out with his friends on the weekends,
and they would go out clubbing and would get drunk. This is what my target audience will
be as I want to portray what most other rap magazines go for when it comes to creating a
magazines audience.
Initial ideas about front page.- For my front page I will be using a medium close up of the
musical artist as my image. The image will portray the stereotypes of what raps are seen to
wear and the type of clothing that they wear. The masthead will be placed at the top left of
the page in the first third of the magazine. It is placed there as I want to portray what a rap
magazine usually looks like when it is seen on the shelves. I will be using bold colours like
white, black, yellow or red to create a colour scheme throughout the front cover of the
magazine as well as using a red or yellow background around the outside of my masthead,
with the title in black or white, whilst using the same font throughout the front cover of the
magazine. The magazine will feature both footer and a header; meanwhile the buzzword
“exclusive” will be shown on the front cover when describing the interview with my artist.
The front cover will also feature a barcode, date and issue number on the front cover, more
probably in the bottom left of the page. The front cover will also feature sell lines featuring
different rap artists that already exist.
Initial ideas about contents page.- on the contents page I will be using a colour scheme
throughout of red and black. I will be featuring two main images on the contents page and I
will be putting coloured borders around the outside of the images. At the top of the page
next to the masthead i will have the title contents along with the issue number and date. I
will also be featuring an editor’s letter where I will discuss the articles that are available
within the magazine. Meanwhile, there will also be an advertisement for a subscription to
the magazine, along with a page number where the reader will be able to find more
information. For the information of the articles in the magazine I will be splitting them into
2. two columns. One will be regulars where it will show the articles that can be found within
every issue, such as profiles, fan letter and opinions articles. Meanwhile, the section column
will be called features, where I will show what can be found in this specific magazine such as
exclusive interviews and articles on different musical artists.
Initial ideas about double page spread.- For the double page spread I will be using a
longshot while the artst will be on the first third of the photo so that the writing can be used
on the last two thirds. The page will feature a title which will be displayed on the first page
of the article. The titlevwill be using the same font that will be used for my masthead. I wiil
also have a small description underneath th headline of the kind of things that the interview
talks about.
Initial ideas about photographs- For my main cover I will be using a medium close up of the
musical artist. For the background I will be using a dark background so that the bold colours
stand out on the page. For the contents page I will have a close up of different parts of the
artists clothing as well as face. For the double page spread I will be using a longshot while
the artist will be on the last third of the photo so that the writing can be used on the first
two thirds. The images will mostly be taken in alley ways as well as dark areas.
