2. Task 2: Idea Development and Planning U9 2.1
You could create a mood board of images related to your product. They could be inspirational or visually interesting.
Analyse what you have gathered.
Decide on content and think about how you will structure your piece – consider the conventions of your chosen
style/genre, think about the best methods to appeal to your audience.
Finally work out a production schedule for the project. Once you have a final proposal, begin to plan how you intend to
realise your project and what you will need to create/collect.
Planning will vary depending on if you are doing a web series, podcast or a fanzine.
Web-series: A script, storyboard, organisational docs and clearance forms for your contributors/sources.
Fanzine: Content outline, visual style, pagination, organisational documents.
Podcast: Script, organisational docs, clearance forms for your contributors/sources.
3.
4. To images to the left are
some examples of classic
fanzine covers, and those
to the right are some old
rap magazines. I want my
fanzine to incorporate
both of these styles.
Though these are just
front covers, the stylistic
elements will be the same
on the rest of the pages,
just more content
focussed.
5. style sheet:
These 3 rap covers incoroprate the exact style I want
to replicate. The use of fire, lightning and cut outs of
cars and money etc. Give it the intentional over the
top look. I want my colour scheme to be similar to
this, just with more enphasis on gold and yellow. I
will use lots of sparkles, fire and light flares like
these do, and also I like the diamond effect text and
think I'll use that for some titles/ headlines. The way
the top image uses cut outs of people and groups
them together is something I will use too, either for
my front cover or for double page spreads that cover
multiple artists.
Graphical elements like these I will use throughout,
and especially fire as it suits my colour scheme. Also,
where these rap covers have used cut outs of say cars
or jewlery, I will do the same but with music related
items. These could be speakers, dj decks,
microphones, records etc.
For my fanzine logo/ name I want to combine the graffiti style with the font,
but also with the diamond/ shiny effect as the colour. If possible, to suit my
colour scheme, I would like it to be a golden sort of shine effect, like a piece of
jewlerry, and then with diamond accents for around the side. On the image
with 'savage mode 11' written on, the boarder has a diamond effect I quite like
and might try use for the outline of the main logo. I also want to make a
boarder around the entire page for all pages, of a skyline of brutal tower blocks
and speakers. I want the speakers to be inbertween buildings as if they are also
buildings. I think this will be a nice addition as it relates to the urban areas my
audience live, the aestetic of the music my fanzine covers, and also relating to
music overall with the use of speakers. On every page and the front cover, I
want small details that develop the aesthetic of the entire zine. The overall
background will be black, so this will also help make the pages more interesting
to look at, and to fill in empty spaces. I think I'll use gunshot wholes, as guns
are a common theme in rap music. Also, random little graffiti tags around will
develop the overall graffiti theme, and hopefully look like people have
scribbled their name over the page. I will make most of my graphics myself,
drawing in either adobe illustrator or google sketchup as I'm quite experienced
with that.
6. Page breakdown:
Front cover: My front cover will consist of the Fanzines title/logo, a catch phrase, date and edition number, a main graphic
regarding the edition, and some basic info of the content within.
Page 1 and 2: Page 1/2 will be an overview of the fanzine as a whole, and some information on the subject it covers. There will
be an image regarding the music my fanzine covers possibly of some artists that will feautre later in the edition.
Page 3 and 4: these pages will be the first of the genre specific sections, covering hiphop. I will breakdown what the hiphop
scene is about, then devle into artist profiles, song reviews and what hiphop raves are coming up. Images used on these pages
will be regarding the artists spoken of, and the promo art for any songs reviewed.
Page 5 and 6: Page 5/6 will be the next genre specific page covering rave music, such as drum and bass and jungle. Again I will
review songs and artists etc. Images will regard
Page 7: page 7 will be a single genre page, covering bassline. Bassline music is having a bit of a revival atm so this section will be
themed like a special edition type thing.
Page 8: Page 8 will be another single genre page covering just rappers. This will be more of like a list of artists I think are doing
good at the moment, with an image of them, then a brief overview and possibly a quote from them.
Page 9 and 10: This will be double page spread covering the main featured artist. This artist will also feature on the front cover
to signify their a main focus of this edition. I will include images of the artist, their promotional images for any songs or albums
etc. And an interview with them.
Page 11: Page 11 will be a fashion page where I present brands and styles that are cool atm, and feature depop pages that I
think are interesting.
Page 12: Just a photo/ drawing that regards something covered in the fanzine
Back cover: Massive song list
7. Front cover plan:
FANZINE NAME
Simple slogan that represents the fanzine
Edition
number & date
Main image
Info on the content of the fanzine,
possibly subtitles or a brief
sentence.
I think I'll title the fanzine 'Sudden
impact' to represent the fact its covering
a fairly new music scene. It will be in a
graffiti style and correspond with the
colour scheme. I'm thinking of either
black and yellow/gold or black and red.
The slogan will also be in a graffiti style,
however just a font not a detailed piece
like the main title. Same applies for date
and edition no.
The main image will be either a selection
of artists who feature in the edition, cut
out and placed together to form one big
image or one artist featured just as a
single image. In production I'll analyse
my photo options and decide.
This will be in a typewriter font
This boarder will have some artistic
design I'm thinking either a city skyline or
speakers stacked up to look like a
skyline.
8. Graphical element plan – front cover:
EDITION 1
14TH OCT
BLAHBLAHBLAHBLAH
This is a very rough representation of what my front cover will look
like, due to PowerPoints editing limitations it of course looks
drastically different to what my final project will, however it shows the
positioning and over the top style. I aim to include icons like I have
here, e.g. the speakers and lightning, yet develop them
further artistically with outer glows etc. The main logo (sudden
impact) will be in a graffiti font, and in similar colours to this, however
again just more developed. The same applies for the slogan beneath.
Also, on my final cover I will probably include more text with info on
what's within the fanzine, and just overall a lot more detail. The white
text (edition number and content info at bottom) will be in a
typewriter font, similar to that, and possibly with an outer glow or
drop shadow. I do feel this plan presents the aesthetic well, as an over
the top intentionally tacky style. Also, the main image will be similar to
this, just with photos of the artists featured within the zine, not snoop
dogg. I also may change the icons beneath (fire, necklace, boombox)
but there will be relating images in their place. The background will be
a solid black, however I'm thinking I may incorporate slight details over
it, like gunshot wholes or cracks. The skyline at the bottom will be
instead made of a combination of UK council flats and tower speakers.
Also, the boarder will be something like this, or an ornate frame style.

The heading will be in a graffiti the
same as the slogan on the front
cover.
The text will be in a typewriter
style font and correspond to the
colour scheme, being either yellow
over black or red over black.
Colour schemes:
I'm going to go for a black, red and yellow/gold theme. Old rap magazines, which is the style I'm
most inspired by, often use contrasting colours over a black backround and purposely make the
coloured elements quite striking and unconventional. The backround will always be black, and text/
graphical elements will vary from red to yellow. I will use striking shades of red and yellow, with
darker shades for smaller elements. I will incorporate some white text for certain smaller pieces of
text.
I will structure each single page spread like this, just
with slight changes regarding the content. Some
pages will hold more images / different text sections.
Also, I will alternate the locations of the main image
on some pages, for e.g the main collum on the right
and the image on the left. Overall though, the single
pages will hold 2 main images and 2 collums of text.
Colour schemes and fonts will stay the same on each
page, other than certain titles which will be in
detailed and unique graffiti styles for artist names
and feature articles. Double page spreads will be
different each time, as they are the feature pages
will be packed with so much info its to extensive to
plan.

The main heading

Typewriter font in

This will be the main

topic of the page, it
will probably be an

Same colour scheme for
main elements, but
double pages will be
more diverse in terms of
aesthetic detail
(Despite this plan for
double page spreads,
which I will use
throughout the zine, I
also don’t want to
restrict myself to this as
the double page spreads
will be the sort of
feature articles. I almost
want them to look like
individual posters. )
