The video will show a friend mountain biking through a forest to the song "Pretender" by Foo Fighters. It will use changes in camera shots and pace to match the changing tempo of the song. Shots will include close-ups of the terrain, scenery, and the rider's face and bike. The concepts will explore the contrast between pushing uphill and racing downhill, and capture the intensity on the rider's face. Storyboarding and shot lists will break the song into sections to plan the visuals, shots, and sequencing needed to film the required footage.

2. GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the
relevant elements you need to cover in your Music Video
Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and
share it with your group so you always have a copy – some
sections require you to delete the information on the slide
and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you
should be doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress through the
pre-production phase.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
5. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
6. RESEARCH
The camera angle is as if its from another erson perspective
in this shot. Its immediately tells you what this type of song
is going to be. The reason we can tell this is because of the
eletric guitar and the fact he is bracing his arm which tells us
he is going to play it agressively. The second image is a
close up of his face you can instantly tell that he is the lead
singer. Also when you look at the background in this image
you can see it’s a big whear house type place and you cant
really gauge whats going to happen in the video. In the 3rd
image you can see a load of riot police in the back ground all
standing against him. The cmera angle hear is a wide shot
7. RESEARCH
This next song is called heat wave. The camera in the
first image is doing a following shot of the person as if
from a child perspctive. This second image is to do with
the song its showing whats looks to be a summers night.
Also the image shows it in england and a lot of people
can relate. On the third image the cmaera angle is a
medium angle shot, it from the perspective of someone
looking out the window at the person walking. The 4th
and last shot shws the brigde all the cars and the sky,
this creates and emersive feel.
8. RESEARCH
The video starts off showing a grainy image of a guy
being escorted or civil aressed in the middle of a street
where it looks to be a roit ging on. The first few seconds
of this video is very caotic and there a lot going on and
hard to try and follow. The secong image is like him
holding a phone singing into a phone making it
realateble. The 4rd image shows almost a rise to fame
from getting arrest to living in a penthouse and talking to
a news reporter.
9. RESEARCH
The setting is like a sitcome setting with light and
vibrant colours. All of which draw the attenion of
our eyes. In the second image it shows a problem that
the girl has her head stuck in the bed. This adds a bit of
comedy in the video. In the 3rd picture there are a lot
more vibrant colurs and they have close to medium
range of camera angles.
10. RESEARCH
In this image you can see a wuper wide angle shot was
used with the main sings in the forground setting on a
car. In the backgroud there are mountains. In the seond
picture is a close up angle at eye leveal as if you standing
looking at eveyone.. This make you feel slightly
itimatedated.
11. IDEA 1
Dark tones with vivid green colour
Set in woods of dalby forest.
Grey/sunny skys
Mountain biking down the hill and then changes between
pushing up the hill due to the song speed and the
changes.
Series of slow motion shots whilst on the bike going
around corner and jumps.
Low camra angles to create affect.
Genre will be action/sports
12. IDEA 2
set in a skatepark
Multiple scooter going over ramps and people doing
tricks on them
Some skaters are having a good day and doing tricks and
the other side are having a bad and can't do any tricks
The colours contrast will be very different the side that
having good day will be covered in vibrant and light
colours whereas the side that having a really bad day the
will have dim colours.
13. IDEA 3
Using a series of low camera angles and some panning
angles it going to be a dance off in a rundown car park.
It will be a deliberately shaky camera angle due to it
being a dance off and you want it to be relatable to the
audience and you want to leave a sort of raw feel. The
camera will shake to the beat and make the audience feel
like there.
14. POTENTIAL SONGS
- stop children whats that sound
- range rover sports truck
- head to heart
- foo fighters pretender
N -come and go juciewrd ft marhmello
16. CONVENTIONS YOU
PLAN TO USE
I plan to use a range of different camera angles and
shots to create a controlled but Kayotic feel.
17. MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]Low shot of person on
mtb
Quick and fast
panning shots
of the rideing
on the bike
Some slow
motion shots
of the rider
spraying a
load of
mood/dust
out of a
corner
If possible
some wide
angle shots of
the rider
flying through
the trees
18. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
1. I will be able to catch the rider doing precise little
movement on the bike, which when slowed down will
look amazing
2. Some wide angles shots of the rider will look good and
create a feel of speed and style
3. Some close ups of the rider walking up the hill will
look good
4. Some seancery panning shots with plenty of trees and
bushes
5. Close up of the ground compressing as it’s walked
upon
19. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
No drone shots
Don’t have a gimble
Don’t have a super wide angle lense
Could break the camera if too much mood gets on it
21. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
The track will go well with mountain bikeing because the
song has a good change in pace, in addition to this the
rock feel is hard and it will contrast with mountain biking
quiet well because might it bikeing is a hard sport.
22.
23. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc] the concept is the pase of mountain
biking changes with the song so when the songs slows
down the rider will be walking up the hill. I plan to use a
few flicker shots in this too, to create an emotional feel
with the viewer
25. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
26. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
Summary of intended production
Detail here what you are going to make and the intended
outcome.
I am going to make a music video to the song pretender by
the foo fighters. The video will be of my friend mountain
biking. I plan for there to be cuts on most of the beats and
short sharp clips.
Detailed breakdown of the music track chosen and your
interpretation of it [remember the questions in the
workbook, e.g. pace/mood/tone/structure] I have chosen
this song because it has really good pace it starts off slow
and then build in to a really fast pace song, witht the
ocasioal slow down in temp mid and end of the song
Specific outline your intended technical/equipment
requirements.
27. SPECIFIC OUTLINE
YOUR INTENDED
TECHNICAL/EQUIPMENT
REQUIREMENTS.The equipment I will use to film are. Samsung s10+ and
a Nikon d3000?
I will have to make sure both cameras look the same
quality and make sure there colours aren't too dissimilar.
The Nikon has a better and smoother zoom, than the
Samsung however the Samsung will have a better picture
quality. I will also use 2 tripos to stand and mount these
cameras to objects which will allow me to get good
angles, and film from a different angle on another
phone.
28. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce. We are
going to film in yearsly woods
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access,
cost, weather? How will you manage this? The distance is
a 20 minutes drive, there is no cost apart from fuel and
there plenty of parking room. The wether however is
unpredictable. I will have 2 weekend to film. Yeasly
woods has many trails which vary
29. EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly
from college, but who do you need to speak to get this
kit? What is available? When? I will need my phone and
slr camera, then I will need a phone gimble and tripod
mount.
30. FACILITIES
Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other
specialist facilities…? I will edit my video at york college
on premier pro by adobe. Then I will download all of the
videos off my phone and camera on to the computer. I
will need an adapter
31. PERSONNEL
CREW: What is you team? Who is in it? What are each
team members strengths/weaknesses? When are they
available? The team is me and my friend who is going to
be riding the bike. The strengths of my friend is he is
very good on the mountain bike.
CAST: Do you need any external performers? When are
they available? Cost implications? Will you have to feed
them? Transport them? I will need 1 external
performer they will be only able on a Saturday/sunday.
Other personnel? Is anyone else helping you? No one else
is helping me.
32. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
I will need my friend will full mountain biking gear, with
a full face helmet and gloves knee pads and goggals.
Also I need my friends mountain bike
34. PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
35. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEP
T BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:
http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for-
hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
37. RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
38. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.
39. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN SECTION 1
The first 30 secs roughly of the start of the video. There will be a series
of seaneary shots to give the view a understadingof where you are and
how cool it looks. There will be close ups of moss on rocks, some water
dripping off ferns. If possible some shots of low clouds in the vally.
Inaddtion to these shots there will also me some close up of the ground
and if possble some nature shots.
40. STRUCTURAL BREAK
DOWN PART 2
When the drum kicked in there will be many flashing
shot of different senses. This will be between nature
shots and the rider pushing up the hill. Also some shots
of wildlife the create a feeling emersions. Some of the
shots of nature will be close and some in slow motion,
one shot that I would like to feature is water dripping off
a leaf/fern. Also some of the shots of nature I want to
get some closeup of birds, or even worms burrowing into
the ground. The shots of the rider pushing up the hill will
be down by the bottom of the back around by the pedals
with. Also of the rider foot pressing on the ground and
leaving it and moving the dirt. This will be in slow
motion. It might be made in slow motion in editing
instead of filming in slow motion.
41. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN PART3
Now the song is around the chorus. This is where most of
the riding will be done, the style of riding will be fast
paced and chaotic. My friend will ride 2 trails because the
song is 4 mintes 27 seconds long. Whilst the song middle
of the chourse is playing the will be close running by th
bike shots. Also just after the main part of the song there
will be a slight slow down by the pace of the song
so will add a few close ups of the rider face as he goes
down the hill. This will show how concintraited he is and
how hard it is to ride. In addtion to this there wille
multiple different shots of corners, for example there will
be one shot from the front and the another from the
back. The rider will kick a load of mud up from the
corner. (picture shown below) this shot may be shot in
slow motion howveer this is subject to change and might
be done in editing process.
42. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN PART 4
Nearing the end of the song there will be little flash back
of the rider pushing up the hill and then raceing back
down these will be really short little cuts between the 2.
43. STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
https://www.storyboardthat.com
http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and
scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
Click to add text
44. SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production
folder.
46. PRODUCTION GROUP
INFO
Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested

47. LOCATION INFORMATION
Information and images of your location[s] for filming
You should have address details, clearance/premissions
for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including
camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues and suggest
solutions
48. LOCATIONS
I am going to film this at yearsly woods. There are really
great mountain bike trails there. You can film on this
site. There is a back-up places if for some reason you
cant go and film there, the backup place is at Dalby
forest, this will work well because I know Dalby forest
very well. I will be using a gimble to film some of my
videos.
Yearsly Dalby forest
49. RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document,
you should evaluate if anything changes in production
and when you put control measures in place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
50. RISK ASSESSMENT
there are many risk ass with where I am filming. One of
the risk are my foot getting run over by my friends bike
wheel.
•Ryan could crash his bike
•There are steep trails involved and you could crash on
them
•It could be really slippy and there for lead to more
crashes
•There are cliff edges that you cant see and you could fall
off the cliff.
•You have to be careful about walers
•You will have to make sure there are no foreran objects
on the trail.
51. CONTINGENCY
PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organizational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
52. CONTINGENCY PLAN
Things that can go wrong How to address these issues
Its stars the rain and the camera could
get wet
The phone is already water resistance
and should be ok
The bike could get a puncher Bringing a puncture repair kit
There could a be a mechanical issue
with the gimble
Put new batteries in it
Could run out of room on phone
storeage
Just delete some unwanted data
53. PRODUCTION
SCHEDULE
Your schedule should budget a total of 10 hours for
production, that is for the filming and editing of your
project.
You should plan when you’re filming and how you intend
to use the in class days on your timetable/class schedule
I will use 3 days in college to edit the video and then the
weekend to film.
54. SCHEDULE
On sunday I will set off from toward yearsly at 8:30 am
I will meet ryan at 9.00am at yeasly
9.00 till 12, we shall film on one trail
From 12 till 3.30 we shall film the other trail
Then hometime !
Monday tuesday wedneday will be spent editing
55. CLEARANCE AND
PERMISSIONS
Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of
your video must have a completed form
Blank forms are on Blackboard for you to complete and
insert here
