The document is a pitch for a horror film trailer to Warner Bros. Pictures. It argues that the film would appeal to Warner Bros. because it has a similar storyline and target audience to one of their successful films, The Conjuring. The target audience for the film is identified as people aged 15-25 who enjoy activities like sports, music, socializing and shopping. The pitch then outlines how the trailer will use conventions of the horror genre in its editing, camerawork, sound, mise-en-scene and form to create suspense and appeal to its target demographic. Research including questionnaires and focus groups informed which genre conventions would be most effective.
2. Why my product is suitable for Warner bros.
Pictures
• My trailer would be suited to Warner Bros. Pictures as they distribute
other films which are similar to mine, such as The Conjuring. This film
has the theme of a possession, which is the same as my film storyline.
My film would be suited to this company as the target audience is the
same, so my film would draw in a large audience, and as Warner Bros.
is a large conglomerate, this would also help create a large audience.
3. My target audience
• My target audience would be people of both genders, and their age would be 15-
25, so teenagers to young adults.
• Their hobbies could include things like football, listening to music, socializing and
shopping.
• They would have a range of occupations and would be of any social class
4. Conventions of genre
• Editing
- Fast paced to create a rush
• Camerawork
- Short takes to create anticipation and suspense
- Close ups to show the characters facial emotions.
- Handheld cameras to create realism.
• Sound
- Non-diegetic music which creates a build up to something bigger happening – tension
- Diegetic music could be screams, sound effects like a piano playing or laughing, which is conventional
• Mise-en-scene
- Lighting would be low key
- Props include weapons like knifes, and also the use of props such as children's toys in storylines which involve families.
5. Conventions of form
Camerawork
- Lots of short takes to create anticipation for what is going to happen in the film
- Establishing shots to set the scene for the film
Sound
- Continuous piece of non-diegetic music playing over the trailer
- Non-diegetic sounds such as screams or laughter, to cause the audience to wonder what is going to happen
Editing
- The use of fade to black between scenes in the trailer, to make the trailer flow.
- Fast paced editing to create a rush and suspense.
6. How I have appealed to my target audience
• I have appealed to my target audience by using questionnaires to find
out what they would like to see within my trailer. I have also
researched into other movies of the same genre and storyline to
discover what was conventional within these trailers. Within this I have
discovered that my audience find close ups, low key lighting and the
use of fade to black between scenes conventional.
7. How my product will use conventions
• When I researched into similar products I found many different
conventions within the camerawork, mise-en-scene, sound and
editing. I will use conventional costumes and props, such as weapons
like knives to match the horror genre. I will also use low-key lighting as
this is conventional to create mystery. The camerawork used would be
conventional as I would use close ups to show emotion, and the use of
a handheld camera would create realism. I would also use short takes
in the trailer to create suspense and a rush. The non-diegetic sound
would create a build up to something bigger happening in the trailer. I
know that this would appeal to the audience from the research I have
done into what they find appealing in my questionnaires and focus
group interviews.
