Introduction
As part of the School Based Assessment for Physical Education and Sport for the 2015
Caribbean secondary Examinations Certificate the P.E class of the Saint Stanislaus
College was required to organize and oversee a tournament for a sport of our choice.
Each student was required to fulfill a role for the tournament which was assigned to them.
Cricket was chosen as it is an extremely popular and common sport in Guyana.
Planning
The first step in planning was the decision of what sport to choose. After discussion,
there was mutual agreement on the choice of sport being Cricket. Cricket was chosen
because the basic rules and game play are known by almost all students of the Saint
Stanislaus College and because the physical education department already had available
cricket equipment, cricket it requires no special or advanced training or equipment and
anyone can play it. The venue for the tournament that was chosen was Saint Stanislaus
College’s hardcourt. This was chosen as it was the best place as it was inside the schools
compound, was available anytime and was free to use as it belonged to the school. The
tournament dates were decided to be the 27th and the 28th of November ,this was later
changed to the 5th and 8th of December as it was much better suited to students and
players as they had completed their school work. The second stage of planning involved
creating the rules for the tournament. The rules for the tournament were decided upon. 4
Teams would be arranged, each representing a house of the school and each team would
consist of 7 males from any form and 4 females from any form. There would be 6 overs
per team. The winning team from each match would face off for First place on the second
day while the 2 losing teams from the first day would battle for third place. Matches were
set by random selection, meaning the names of the houses were written on pieces of
paper which were then placed into a bag. Then 2 pieces of paper were drawn and the
names on them would face each other while the houses written on the pieces of paper in
the bag would face each other. The Third stage of planning involved the choosing of
roles, Preparation of a letter to the Headmistress requesting permission to hold the
tournament, preparation of flyers and making of teams. Each student in the physical
education class was given a choice of the role they wanted for the tournament. I chose a
Coach of the Ethridge house. After the choosing of roles, a draft of a letter requesting
permission was written by the P.E students for the Head mistress which would be typed
and sent to her. A draft of the flyer for the Tournament was also written up which was to
be finalized later and then printed in multiple copies and put up around the school.
Day 1
On December 5th, the first day of the tournament, the first match was between the houses
of Wield and Galton which commenced at 11: 45 am. Both houses had strong teams. The
coin flip was won by Wield who decided that they would bat first. After 6 overs they
managed to make 35 runs and lost 5 wickets. This did not stop Galton who barely out
edged Wield as they achieved 36 runs, lost 2 wickets and won by one ball.
Butler and Ethridge were up next to face off. Both teams warmed up, stretched and
prepared themselves in the intermission between the games, after this they received a
quick motivational talk. Ethridge had to bat first thus the game began. Ethridge played
fairly well, however a team member caused the team to lose five points for disorderly
conduct. After 6 overs Ethridge had 17 runs and lost 5 wickets. Butler demonstrated that
they were the superior team as they made away with the win after only one over. Butler
had five overs to spare and made 18 runs.
Day 2
On Monday, the 8th of December the game were scheduled to commence at 11:45 am. At
11:05 I gathered my Ethridge team and proceeded to guide them through warm up and
stretching exercises. I then gave a brief motivational talk to my team. Since we lost on the
first day, we had to face up against wield, who lost to Butler, for third place. Wield was
required to bat first and thus Ethridge opened bowling. After 6 overs Ethridge claimed a
single wicket while Wield had a hefty sum of 81 runs. Ethridge then proceeded to bat, but
their efforts proved futile as after 6 overs they held 57 runs and lost 5 wickets.
For the final game for the number one spot, Butler met Galton head on in battle. Butler
opened the batting and served up 36 runs for 5 wickets. This proved to me more than
enough for victory because although they played valiantly, Wield made 27 runs and lost 6
wickets after the 6 overs. Thus Butler was crowned the cricket champions for the 2014
interhouse cricket competition.
My role in the tournament
For this inter house cricket tournament I chose the role of the coach for the Ethridge
team. A coach is a person who teaches and trains the members of a sports team and
makes decisions about how the team plays during games. As a coach I have several
responsibilities:
 Responsible for planning training sessions
 Responsible for tactical and technical decisions
 Keeps accurate records
 Arrive at the venue at sufficient time prior to start the session
 Close supervision of activities
 Inspect the activity area; take the necessary steps to minimize health and safety
risk.
 See to it that all team members are on time and well prepared
 Understand the needs of sports people and motivate them.
 Have a deep knowledge of their sports.
 Warm up the team before games.
My role as the Coach of Ethridge saw me carry out these responsibilities. Firstly I had to
gather my team members this was done on 19th of November. I handpicked Ethridge
students from third to sixth form who frequently play cricket and show talent in the game.
I then informed them of the various details of the tournament. I arranged a training
session for my team one week prior as all members already knew how to play the game
of cricket. During this training session they ran laps for warm up, stretched and then
practiced bowling, batting and fielding. The day before the tournament, I, along with the
team’s coach, arranged the batting and bowling order.
On the days of the tournament I ensured that all team members were on time and well
prepared, I warmed them up and talked over the way they should play. I concluded with a
motivational speech. I supervised the games that they played and kept accurate records.
Reflections
In conclusion of the tournament, I believe it was successful, enjoyable for everyone and
was entertaining for the crowd as Cricket is an exciting game and is part of Guyanese
culture. I played my role of coach to the best of my ability and although I was
disappointed that Ethridge placed last, I am proud of my team for representing their
house and playing against the odds. I also commend all teams for their attitude in game
and the level of skill and discipline they displayed. I think that all teams showed excellent
sportsmanship and that that is what truly made this project a success as although there
was only one victor all teams and their members learned co- operation, teamwork,
strategy, respect and discipline as a result of this project. At the end of the day winning is
not everything, its also about enjoying the sport and having fun. Over all this was a great
experience for all P.E students.

Then 2 pieces of paper were drawn and the names on them would face each other while the houses written on the pieces of paper in the bag would face each other. The Third stage of planning involved the choosing of roles, Preparation of a letter to the Headmistress requesting permission to hold the tournament, preparation of flyers and making of teams. Each student in the physical education class was given a choice of the role they wanted for the tournament. I chose a Coach of the Ethridge house. After the choosing of roles, a draft of a letter requesting permission was written by the P.E students for the Head mistress which would be typed and sent to her. A draft of the flyer for the Tournament was also written up which was to be finalized later and then printed in multiple copies and put up around the school.
  • 3. Day 1 On December 5th, the first day of the tournament, the first match was between the houses of Wield and Galton which commenced at 11: 45 am. Both houses had strong teams. The coin flip was won by Wield who decided that they would bat first. After 6 overs they managed to make 35 runs and lost 5 wickets. This did not stop Galton who barely out edged Wield as they achieved 36 runs, lost 2 wickets and won by one ball. Butler and Ethridge were up next to face off. Both teams warmed up, stretched and prepared themselves in the intermission between the games, after this they received a quick motivational talk. Ethridge had to bat first thus the game began. Ethridge played fairly well, however a team member caused the team to lose five points for disorderly conduct. After 6 overs Ethridge had 17 runs and lost 5 wickets. Butler demonstrated that they were the superior team as they made away with the win after only one over. Butler had five overs to spare and made 18 runs.
  • 4. Day 2 On Monday, the 8th of December the game were scheduled to commence at 11:45 am. At 11:05 I gathered my Ethridge team and proceeded to guide them through warm up and stretching exercises. I then gave a brief motivational talk to my team. Since we lost on the first day, we had to face up against wield, who lost to Butler, for third place. Wield was required to bat first and thus Ethridge opened bowling. After 6 overs Ethridge claimed a single wicket while Wield had a hefty sum of 81 runs. Ethridge then proceeded to bat, but their efforts proved futile as after 6 overs they held 57 runs and lost 5 wickets. For the final game for the number one spot, Butler met Galton head on in battle. Butler opened the batting and served up 36 runs for 5 wickets. This proved to me more than enough for victory because although they played valiantly, Wield made 27 runs and lost 6 wickets after the 6 overs. Thus Butler was crowned the cricket champions for the 2014 interhouse cricket competition.
  • 5. My role in the tournament For this inter house cricket tournament I chose the role of the coach for the Ethridge team. A coach is a person who teaches and trains the members of a sports team and makes decisions about how the team plays during games. As a coach I have several responsibilities:  Responsible for planning training sessions  Responsible for tactical and technical decisions  Keeps accurate records  Arrive at the venue at sufficient time prior to start the session  Close supervision of activities  Inspect the activity area; take the necessary steps to minimize health and safety risk.  See to it that all team members are on time and well prepared  Understand the needs of sports people and motivate them.  Have a deep knowledge of their sports.  Warm up the team before games. My role as the Coach of Ethridge saw me carry out these responsibilities. Firstly I had to gather my team members this was done on 19th of November. I handpicked Ethridge students from third to sixth form who frequently play cricket and show talent in the game. I then informed them of the various details of the tournament. I arranged a training session for my team one week prior as all members already knew how to play the game of cricket. During this training session they ran laps for warm up, stretched and then practiced bowling, batting and fielding. The day before the tournament, I, along with the team’s coach, arranged the batting and bowling order. On the days of the tournament I ensured that all team members were on time and well prepared, I warmed them up and talked over the way they should play. I concluded with a motivational speech. I supervised the games that they played and kept accurate records.
  • 6. Reflections In conclusion of the tournament, I believe it was successful, enjoyable for everyone and was entertaining for the crowd as Cricket is an exciting game and is part of Guyanese culture. I played my role of coach to the best of my ability and although I was disappointed that Ethridge placed last, I am proud of my team for representing their house and playing against the odds. I also commend all teams for their attitude in game and the level of skill and discipline they displayed. I think that all teams showed excellent sportsmanship and that that is what truly made this project a success as although there was only one victor all teams and their members learned co- operation, teamwork, strategy, respect and discipline as a result of this project. At the end of the day winning is not everything, its also about enjoying the sport and having fun. Over all this was a great experience for all P.E students.
