Fatigue can make cowards of us all.
Vince Lombardi
Don’t waste too much time on Warm-Ups and Conditioning.
Tired players do not listen because they are trying to catch
their breathe. Put important parts of your practice early in
the practice plan.
Use the fast pace of your practice to condition your players.
Also, make conditioning fun and or logical to the player.
Don’t run just to run. You can make it Fun.

Especially in football, it is not a QB's
game... even though the media likes to
make it into that - it takes the whole
team.
Installing a new offense is harder than
a new defense. It just takes time.
Joe Montana

Linemen are literally the unsung heroes of the
game. Their situation is analogous to the
infantry in warfare. They do the hard, bitter
fighting for victory. As the generals reap the
headlines in war, the backs reap the headlines
in football. Yet in their hearts, the generals
and backs know that victory and the accolades
came to them through the work of the foot
soldiers and linemen.
-- Gomer Jones (Bud Wilkinson's line coach at
Oklahoma)

Great special teams in youth football will
steal wins from even the best teams.
Coach Dave Cisar
Steal Wins
Special Teams in Youth Football
• Kick Off – Onside Kicks most popular
– Deep kicks allow for long returns dangerous unless practice
– Kick to a MPP or big lineman with no hands
– Find a soccer player on your team to try out for kicker
– Practice kicks 20 reps before practice 10 to 15 yard kicks to 2nd line
• Kick Return – Hands and Speed
– Hands team
– Do not hide MPPS here
– Trap Return
– Assign players to block
– Watch film and find out where they kick
• Punt – only within your 10 or 20.
– Most dangerous play in youth football
– Too many variables – snap, kick, return coverage, open field tackles
– We tend to fake punt more
• Punt Return – no one touch the ball but your hands guy if drops in his hands
– Punt block
– If return best hands person and only if ball drops in his hands
– Unless they have good punter drop two back to field the ball and let them block for each other
• PAT Kicks / Field Goals – KYA??? Just seniors?

Are you Worthy to Coach?
Lifetime Memories
• Most of your competition is either too
stubborn or in some cases too lazy to
take the time and effort to get
better. Your kids are suffering and
will have memories of poor coaching
for a lifetime. ~ Coach Cisar
• Don’t let your players suffer from your lack of effort. They deserve
110% because that’s what you ask them to give you on the field. If
you give 80% effort then expect to lose.

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Thank you Paul Q and KYA for asking me to help with Coaching QA Look forward to sharing
  • #8 Perception is Reality at least look like a good coach Organization & Prep – Do u have everything, practice plan, equipment, do u look prepared. Commitment – are you in 110% because this is my hobby I gave up rball and golf and I do this Student – do you draw up plays during lunch? Do you study other coaches or games? Read football? Communication – be confident be positive, be commanding Over communicating is best write it down for parents Role Model – u cant be smoking at drinking at practice or cussing. Think of how your favorite Sunday school teacher would coach your youth football team. Show then you care and know how to play the game. Motivation – Be positive, expect them to the the best, push them but not over a cliff youre not bear bryant at junction texas. Although punishment does work but do not over do it. Saftey – you must provide a safe environment, field, parents, coaches, strangers, equipment, have an emergency plan For Gods sake be early and last to leave don’t leave a player at the field Know how to work with your staff and choose wisely – make sure they know you and their kid is a starter otherwise its will be an issue Make sure you have some football knowledge and experience at least at JR high level maybe one year HS.
  • #10 Grass drills and draft are my favorite part of the season. Off-season prep work makes the championship Team. This draft can make or break your season. Spend a lot of time working on your picks. Don’t get fooled by speed or size. Do they have experience hitting? Do they like to hit? Desire??? Watch film on them, get a coaches referral. How did they play against you last year? Make a db or list of players from season to season that impact your team. Who not to pick might be more important than your number 3 or 4 pick. You are only as good as your weakest link.
  • #13 Don’t assume your players know the game of football. They do not. Off sides, holding, block in back, etc Make them learn position names and what they do. I will ask people in grass drills what they played and they can tell me. Very sad. Have a hole numbering or naming system. We prefer hole numbers since this will carry on through NFL. But I know younger players may like funny names, introduce both Defensive Gap System ABCDE, I also use the offensive hole numbering system, I rarely use the NFL technique chart system Proper Stance – 2 /3/4 offense and defense and rbs vs lineman and LBs vs DBs Blocking – Drive, Angle, Reach, Pass, Hands Engagement no Chicken Wings Tackling – Form, Angle, Close Courters, Open Field, Grab Clothe, Use Hands, Drive Through, Bite Ball Passing – Many theories on this and many QB coaches around, eyes, shoulder, elbow and step to target Catching – Use fingers and catch the egg, soft hands, eyes on ball, focus, tuck into body then run out of boundsi is a tackle Holding the football – see nike video 6 points QB Exchange Start early and do it everyday
  • #21 I know for many of you this is a pain in the butt. Find a Asst Coach or team mom that knows how to use these tools. You look really organized and prepared when you do. Have the website ready when you draft the players load in and send out your website info. You will look like a star. I use Shutterfly as you can see and Power Point for my Playbooks.
  • #25 Discuss your weekly practice plan with all coaches before the week and develop the plan – MS WORD or small note cards but share with coaches they cannot read your mind. If you want a coach to help you may have to manage that coach and train him on what you want him to coach. Do not assume he will coach it they way you want it. One of your coaches needs to arrive 15 minutes to 30 minutes early to set up first stations so the practice can move quickly when everyone arrives. Communicate at first of practice with players the goals and what you are going to do. They like to know. Break practice up into 15 to 20 minute segments. Keep their attention, no one standing around
  • #50 Keep it Simple (Dean) – Especially for younger ages below 5th grade. Depends on football IQ of group. Simple equals less thinking which equals Speed. Simple = Speed Parent Communication (Paul / Dean) Set clear rules and expectations early in writing so everyone knows. Set parent meeting before first practice. Make sure they understand when and where they can speak with you. Team Management (Dean) – How many coaches maybe 4 to 6. Team Mom, Game Day Volunteers Daddy Ball & Favoritism (Steve) – Everyone is watching you. If your son is the QB please make sure you do not have Peyton Manning Jr on the sideline. And please do not make promises to players that they will play a position just in case you draft Johnny Manzeil. Lineman Drills - Board – Blocking Pod, Angle Blocks, Double teams, Sled, Hands, Quick feet Stances – 2 point, 3 point, 4 point, defense vs offense Hole Numbering System – Running Backs / Holes / Defensive Gaps / Receivers Blocking / Tackling / Running – see videos and explain at forums Hitting and Concussions - Experienced players do not need to hit each other much in practice / drills. Pair of smaller players with smaller players and big with big to help with injuries
