Project title: SAS
Project:
Project Description:
I will create a music magazine called SAS inspired by XXL magazine. The genre is
hip hop and RnB. This magazine will include well-known and new artists,
interviews, reviews and adverts such as Jay Z. My main model Imani will be in
my double page spread which will include a short interview, a main image, other
images and an incite of her new album. In addition to my double page spread and
front cover I will design a contents page, which will include an editorial.
Photographer:
I will be the photographer for my front cover. I will be taking a medium long shot
because I want to capture all of my models body to show off her clothes and
posture. However my long shot would include some of the background but I will
crop this out using Photoshop by following the XXL example the photo will be
just of the model. I am using a medium shot because this allows you to get to
know the model more by viewing their facial expressions and body language. I
will use bright lighting and a side light because moving the light to one side of
the model produces a far more interesting light, as it shows the shape of the
model better than when the light is coming from the camera position.
Reference
images and
ideas:
I chose this title because the definition of sassy is, lively and bold. These key words
connote what I want my magazine to represent, as I want it to stand out and make a
strong appearance. XXL magazine has strong, bold artists featuring who are all
upbeat; especially the female Hip-Hop artist could be described as ‘sassy’. SAS is
three characters like XXL therefore it is short, memorable and relevant.

I have selected these images for my inspiration because they represent what my
magazine is about. For example the female models posture is causal and relaxed,
this gives the impression that they have a relaxed attitude to life and this is how I
want my model to be portrayed. Additionally they are the type of model I would
use due to their style, race and overall appearance. Furthermore my XXL
magazine front cover inspired me to have the picture of the artist being very big
and to the left of my logo/masthead. My first XXL magazine has just the artist and
has cropped the background out, this allows you to focus on the artist instead of
the environment the photo was taken in. I will use this idea within my magazine.
Casting:
Imani is suitable because her afro symbolizes the stereotypical reader coming
from mixed race black ethnic community. The clothes she is wearing also
represent the stereotypical reader, for example the black Adidas Super Star
trainers which are very popular through this well-known brand. These brands
would be advertised and featured in any hip hop/RnB magazine including XXL. I
have also included a picture of Chris Brown as XXL have featured him in their
magazine and he is an example of the type of artist I would include. In this photo
he is wearing a baseball hat/snapback, which are often worn by male hip hop
artists, such as Young Leeze, ASAP Rocky and Lil Wayne.

Model requirements:
Wardrobe and Look:
Imani is going to wear ripped grey jeans (Topshop), a crop top; hoop earrings, a
gold chain and Adidas Super Star trainers. I have chosen these items because
they are very popular for girls to wear today and famous hip hop artist wear
similar outfits. My sources of inspiration were XXL and other music magazines,
fashion magazines and artists media pages such as Instagram. These are some
inspirational pictures of Rihanna, a well-known hip-hop artist.
The model should be taller than 5 foot 7, and older than 16. The age requirement
is they need to be able to look mature enough to appeal to the young adult
audience. They also need to be old enough to be able to model the outfits in a
similar way to how an adult would look in them. However I have put an age limit
of 20 years old because they need to look young and fresh to the music scene as
they are an up and coming artist. No ethnicity is required because hip-hop is for
everyone however white British/African would be favored because they would
represent the white and black community. However hip hop originated from the
black community, so my first addition could be on this, and in other editions I
can show diversity.

Hair and Make up:
Imani will have a high-sleeked back ponytail. Her makeup will include thick
black eyeliner coming into a point, false eyelashes, eyebrow wax and foundation.
The eyeliner and false eyelashes will enhance the eyes by darken, thicken and
lengthening the eyes. The eyebrows and foundation will highlight her features
and blemish her skin to make her face look flawless. Her tight ponytail will draw
attention to her face and make her features stand out. This is important because
Imani is representing a famous artist and you will want to recognize her face.
Where:
I will take the photo at school because following XXL I will crop the photo so it is
only the artist with no background. I have selected my school because it doesn’t
require me to organise any transport for myself the photographer or the model.
A benefit of using the school is I know it very well, this means I know locations
which I would like to use, for the example the field because I will have no
distractions, plenty of space and no buildings blocking the sun light.
This is where my photo
will be taken.
