Project Description:
In this project I will be taking photos to use in my music magazine. The target
audience will be African-American males aged around 16-35. The people that I
photograph will meet certain stereotypical expectations of a Hip-Hop artist, such
as flashy jewelry and a cap. I will be competing with ‘The Source’ magazine (my
magazine of inspiration). Although I am competing with ‘The Source’, I will have
a higher price of £4.99 as I wish to use premium pricing, meaning that by having
a higher price than other magazines, readers will believe that it is of a higher
quality. For this project I will be creating a front cover, contents page a double
page spread.
Photographer:
I will be the photographer for my magazine.
My photo will be of Ben Stride
Technical Codes –The photo for my magazine cover will be a medium-
close-up/ longshot. For my contents page I will be taking a medium-close
up image and for my DPS I will be taking a medium shot.
Lighting – The lighting for the front cover, contents page and double page
spread will be high-key, bright lighting
Post Production – I will use photoshop to airbrush the image and remove
any blemishes
‘The Lean’ connotes keeping a balance between Hip-Hop music and the Hip-Hop
culture, in that it ‘leans’ both ways.

Reference images and ideas:
I am using this as my magazine
cover of inspiration because I
believe it really expresses the
conventions and stereotypes of
the Hip-Hop genre that attracts
readers of the Hip-Hop genre.

Casting:
The person I am using (Ben Stride) is suitable for a Hip-Hop
magazine as his skin tone is stereotypical for the Hip-Hop
genre and his overall style is very stereotypical of the Hip-
Hop genre and so he in using him for my magazine I will be
highlighting the Hip-Hop culture and music which will
feature in the magazine. My photos will be two medium
shots and a medium-close up shot.
The main image of artist Meek Mill
dominatesthe entire right page of
the doublepage spread.
Immediately the reader is
informed on what the article will
concern. In this image Meek Mill is
wearinga gold chain and watch,
which are particularly
stereotypical Hip-Hop accessories
as many Hip Hop artists wear
similar jewellery and so the reader
is quickly able to recognise the
representation of the genre

Why these items? I chose these items because they combine the various
stereotypes in that Hip-Hop artists they Although Hip-Hop artists do often
wear expensive designer clothing, street wear is a very important feature
of the Hip-Hop genre, as Hip-Hop artists like to portray to their fans that
although they may have come a long way from their background they are
still the same person that gained them their popularity.
Source of inspiration?
Hair and Make up:
I will not be using any make-up as Hip-Hop artists (male artists) do not typically
wear any makeup. My models hair will be short dreadlocks as many Hip Hop
artists have hade this hairstyle.
Where:
The shot will take place at my house
When:
I will take the photos during the afternoon because at that time I will have the
perfect amount of lighting
