White Tigers From The Woman Warrior Essay
Maxine Hong Kingston once said, I ve been writing since I was 7, but before that, I was orally making
stories. This quote expresses Kingston s fervor for writing and storytelling outside of her short story
White Tigers from the Woman Warrior , which emphasizes the importance of literature, which is her
art, by retelling her own childhood as the fairy tale of the Woman Warrior, Fa Mu Lan, and connecting
it back to her own life. The introductory paragraphs, coupled with the word carving scene and the
concluding final paragraphs, evoke Fa Mu Lan and present Maxine s life as analogous to Fa Mu Lan s
life story. While it is understood that they did not know each other, Maxine complicates this
relationship , for lack of a better word, by using a first person narrative as opposed to a third person
narrative while retelling the fairy tale , which in turn complicates subjectivity of Maxine, and the
relationship between Maxine and Fa Mu Lan. Moreover, the words in the word carving scene in the
middle of the fairy tale are double symbols of suffering and of perfect filiality, which is a trait
common in Chinese culture. By and large, these early on passages, and each section from there on,
and the word cutting scene, utilize the literary devices of point of view and central symbol to influence
the audience to acknowledge Maxine s claim that Fa Mu Lan is her model, and that she, Maxine, is
fruitful in taking after her case since they both have words at their backs.

Minks Life Cycle
One day we were driving down the road and in the pond next to us there was a pelican thrashing
around in the water. We didn t know what it was doing until we saw the little brown creature on its
side. It was small furry and vicious. It s a Mink! Minks are carnivorous mammals in the lower big rib
river. Minks live in wooded areas and near rivers, streams, or ponds. They will also live near farms. It
will sneak in kill a chicken and drag it back to its den. When it lives near the water it will fish or kill
snakes and squirrels. It will make a den out of fallen branches or it will dig a hole in the dirt and and
cover it will leaves. A mink s diet/food chain is pretty simple. It preys on lots of small critters like
mice and snakes but it also eats bigger animals like pelicans. Its predators are snakes and big birds like
eagles and falcons. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Famingham Downtown Renaissance Analysis
Framingham Downtown Renaissance Analysis and Questions
Analysis
Framingham Downtown Renaissance s main objective is to connect the small businesses of downtown
Framingham and make it an energetic area in order to promote community and economic stimulus. As
a non profit it is doing a great job of marketing itself as well as building a network (its own website) to
promote downtown Framingham mom and pop stores. It is going to be involved with a program to
disperse grant money for helping women, minorities, veterans, immigrants and people with disabilities
start or expand their businesses. In addition to the money the program may be teaching potential/
current entrepreneurs more on how to run a business. Unfortunately the article wasn t explicit on what
exactly FDR brought to the table. But it was the first in the list of groups that are affiliated with the
project. Therefore it s safe to say that Framingham Downtown Renaissance is an important
contributor. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Importance of Birds in Virginia Woolf s The Waves ...
The Importance of Birds in Virginia Woolf s The Waves
To emphasize her viewpoint in The Waves, Woolf employs a distinctive style. She interlocks the
dramatic monologues of six characters at successive stages in their lives to tell her story; and prefaces
each of the sections with a descriptive passage of sun and waves through a single day. In these
passages descriptions of the sun, the sea, the plants, and the birds make implicit comparisons with the
characters speeches. The actions of the birds in the descriptive passages most strikingly parallel the
developing consciousness of the characters, exemplified by Susan.
The birds developing singing abilities and early explorations parallel Susan s experiences in childhood

About to leave finishing school in Switzerland, Susan declares her hatred of the unfamiliar I hate fir

Further into the novel, the birds behavior corresponds to Susan s early adulthood, her prime, and her
middle age. The birds sing alone, stridently . . . as if the song were urged out of them . . . as if the edge
were being sharpened. They [descend] dry beaked, ruthless, abrupt (109), soar in high flights, observe,

by the light of a lamp (119) to Percival s farewell dinner. At this reunion she learns that Bernard,
whom she loves, has become engaged. Susan thinks that something irrevocable has happened. . . . We
shall never flow freely again (142). The sun rises to its full height; the birds passionate songs
addressed to one ear only (149) stop; they build nests. Word arrives that Percival, who has loved
Susan, has died in India. Susan, engaged to a farmer, shows momentary anger at the news. The sun no

Gender In Pride And Prejudice
Extended Essay
The man s sphere versus the woman s sphere in Jane Austen s Pride and Prejudice
Abstract
Introduction
Jane Austen s novels are known for not only being enthralling but also as characteristic of British
society in the nineteenth century. Her novels present a compelling view on the historical,
psychological, and sociological issues woven into the plots that are full of irony, farce, and versatile
characters. One of Jane Austen s most appreciated novels Pride and Prejudice illustrates the topic that
I will explore in my extended essay, which is the male world versus the female one. In order to
address my question How does social status and gender bias influence life decisions and perceptions
of the world in Austen s Pride and Prejudice? I will investigate and portray the specific views of both
gender s worlds as offered by Austen in comparison to the established ones from Nineteenth Century
England. The social status and genders of the characters influence their lives in all aspects, from
determining their perceptions of the world to limiting their potentials in life decisions.
I strongly believe that my topic of choice is worth investigating; my work doesn t just outline the role
of social rank and gender in Nineteenth Century England, it also includes widely accepted knowledge
about intellectual differences between the genders and their interpersonal relationships. Furthermore
my essay will be supplemented by unique insight into the life of the

Technology And The Positive Aspects Of Technology
In this day of age, almost everything has been become digital and you must now adjust to this new
form. Even though technology has turned over to a new direction, there is still much to learn and
benefit from. The good thing about today s technology is that it is much easier to use than how it was
many years ago. Technology is always advancing and creating new things to learn. As this essay
progresses, I will be discussing three types of technology that have been positive aspects in my life, all
of which are currently greatly advancing.
The first type of technology that I chose as a positive aspect of my life is the video game system, the
Xbox. To begin with, I have bought all generations of the console since I was a kid. Growing up with
this gaming system made my childhood very enjoyable and worthwhile. There are so many memories
and positive lessons I have learned from playing video games. I used to enjoy playing on the Xbox
systems with my childhood friend. It was just fun to play with not my friend, but many others in the
world as well. This connected us to many other players around the globe who also had the same
interests as us. This sparked the beginning of something new to me.
Video games can help cope with many people s problems. There are some stereotypes that say that
gamers are usually isolated and develop very few social skills. But that stereotype isn t necessarily
true. Video games have been scientifically proven to help deal with anxiety, ADHD, stress, and

A Community Mental Health Team While Working With A Client...
Introduction
This literature review and research proposal was motivated following a practice placement with a
Community Mental Health Team while working with a client with Generalised Anxiety Disorder
(GAD). GAD is a long term condition that causes someone to feel anxious about a wide range of
situations and issues, rather than one specific event. GAD is a common mental health condition
affecting 1 in every 25 people in the United Kingdom, its prevalence is slightly more among women
than men and individuals between the ages of 35 and 55 (NHSChoices, 2014). People with GAD feel
anxious most days and often struggle to remember the last time they felt relaxed (NHSChoices, 2014).
Feeling anxious is a normal response to stressful experiences, however when anxiety is prolonged,
inappropriate, and/or overwhelming to the point that it impacts on functioning, it becomes a
pathological disorder (Davis, 2011). The anxiety, worry, or physical symptoms cause significant
distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning (APA, 2000).
Studies have shown that GAD is more impairing than other anxiety disorders (Hoffmann et al., 2009);
and people afflicted with GAD have reported significantly less satisfaction with their quality of life in
particular in the domains of self esteem, goals and values, money, work, play, learning, creativity,
friends and family (Henning et al., 2007). Thus GAD has a disabling impact on an individual s
occupation performance

Reasons For The Compromise Of 1877
Following the Compromise of 1877, many supporters of black rights, such as freed slaves or radical
Republicans, believed that conditions for freed blacks were worse than they had been when they were
enslaved. Though there were definitely upsides to freedom from slavery, many conditions blacks lived
under either didn t change or got worse after the Compromise. For example, the removal of the
military from the South allowed the southern government to pass laws limiting blacks rights, meaning
the social, political and economic conditions after the compromise were similar to the ones they had
lived with under slavery; the legalization of segregation made it more difficult for blacks to influence
white perception of their race; and violence against blacks increased, and white protection of them
decreased, as many saw them as less valuable once they had been released from slavery. The
compromise ended the reconstruction, which meant that the military presence in the south, which had
been virtually the only thing keeping a semblance of order, was removed. This resulted in widespread
and often unpunished violence against blacks. It also left the southern government free to operate by
itself, and measures were quickly taken to limit the rights of blacks. Education budgets were cut,
sharecropping regulations were changed in order to favor plantation owners, and the right to vote was
taken away from blacks. Blacks were free from slavery, but they had nearly the exact same

harmful greenhouse gases by 6 billion metric tons over the life of the program (The White House). On

Letter To Chronicle Books
Dear Chronicle Books; Submissions Editor,
The law of attraction is a growing trend. Though many people read the books tailored towards this law
they fail to attract into their life what they desire. They have the knowledge to use this law yet they
don t practice it. Knowledge isn t a capacity of knowing but rather a capacity of doing. One of Seven
gives readers the practical tool to really use this law to their advantage to finally manifest their goals.
The main principles in this book are based on the similarities I noticed in books including The Seven
Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra and The Secret by Rhonda Bryne, psychological studies
I examined while I was in University, and various documentaries including The Secret on Netflix.
These sources have a very powerful and effective message to empower people to transform their lives
yet millions of people don t follow through. With One of Seven anybody in the world can manifest the

How Did Ww1 Affect British Literature
During the 20th century World War I had a huge effect on British literature, both good and bad. It
ultimately changed the way British writers and authors construct their work. World War I made a huge
impact not only on civilians not involved in the war, but also on the men fighting in the gruesome war.
The Great War brought wisdom and new unique writing styles to the British literature world. The
Great War changed many things in the British literature world. Dr. Fiona Robinson says in an article
First World War literature presents a range of many new perspectives. (Robinson). Along with new
perspectives, many new writers were starting to come up. A.D Harvey states in an article on
historytoday.com From the very first week, the 1914 18 war inspired enormous quantities of poetry
and fiction. The claim that three million war poems were written in Germany in the first six months of
hostilities is difficult to substantiate, but Catherine W. Reilly has counted 2,225 English poets of the
First World War, of whom 1,808 were civilians. For example, William Watson (then an esteemed poet,
today virtually forgotten) quickly decided that his war poems should be so much in evidence that
people [would] be saying that W.W. is the real national poet in this crisis , and had sixteen different
war poems printed in various newspapers in the first six weeks. (Harvey). Carolyn Wilson says The
war s extreme brutality led to an outpouring of literature concerning its conduct and effects

1. Compare Allport s criteria for mental health to each of the following theorists and theories:
a. Freud s Psychodynamic Theory of Personality
b. Rogers s Person Centered Theory of Personality
c. Cattell s Factor Analytic Trait Theory of Personality
According to Allport, an individual s personality is genetically determined, and formed by his
environment and experience. In order to have psychological maturity, an individual has to have a well
developed proprium and a copious set of adjustable dispositions, (Boeree, 2006).
According to Freud s psychodynamic theory development of personality depends on the interaction of
instincts and the environment during early years of childhood of an individual (first five years).
Behavior of parents is a key element to determine normal and abnormal development. Personality
problems and mental health in adulthood can usually be tracked back from the first five years of life,

Monstrosity In The Monster
Friedrich Nietzsche once said, Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not
become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you . The
term monster comes from the word monēre, which means to warn. Monsters are used to reveal or
make reality a situation that is often left ignored. Often the word monster brings up any stories such as
Frankenstein, Dracula, and Beowulf. The stories of these monsters have a lasting impact on
generations because of their ability to captivate audiences both young and old. Cultures around the
world have a connection with monstrosity. Throughout history, we have the opportunity to witness the
struggle between mankind and the beast. Sadly, very few have yet discovered the true connection
between monstrosity and humanity. Throughout the years, in the quest for control, humanity has
created a merciless beast very few understand. The true monster in these stories are us, humans. These
creatures are paying the price because of society s ruthless behaviors.
Monsters originate in folklore, which is found and almost every culture. With folklore, you can pass
down family traditions, history, and discipline. It connects us to the outside world , and provides us
with the major challenges faced in our society. Monsters are used to reveal a situation that is left
ignored. Merriam Webster defines Monsters as, an imaginary creature that is typically large, ugly, and
frightening . These

This documentary had several interesting and well thought out points. Each of the philosophers had
very different approaches when it came to life. One of the first quotes of the documentary was, The
unexamined life is not worth living. This quote was originally said by Socrates a Greek philosopher.
The words were supposedly spoken by Socrates at his trial after he chose death rather than exile. They
represent the noble choice which is the choice of death in the face of an alternative.
One of the philosophers that projected themselves to me most was Peter Singer. Singer is a

The Warfare During The American Civil War
The conduct of warfare during the American Civil War best exemplified one characteristic of the
Western way of war, which without its incorporation could have drastically changed the outcome of
the war and the existence of the United States as we know it. This characteristic demonstrated is
innovation. Innovation as a characteristic of the Western way of war best exemplifies the American
Civil War based on the telegraph, the rifled musket and the railroad. Had the Union and United States
government not leveraged the above mentioned technologies the outcome of the war could have
resulted in the division of this country. From the onset of the Civil War the South possessed two
advantages. One was geography and the other was that it did not have to win the war. The vastness of
the United State presented command and control challenges and logistical challenge for both Union
and Confederal forces. This before mentioned challenge played into the Confederate forces other
advantage which was they could simple keep the Union forces to a draw during the war and thus
ensuring their future as an independent country. For the Union forces to overcome the challenge of
geography and to not result in a draw they used innovations such as the telegraph to communicate
orders to Soldiers over vast distances and thus making geography and the tyranny of distance a less of
an advantage for the Confederate forces. The ability for leadership to convey timely orders to their

The Theoretical Frameworks Within Social Psychology Essay
Behaviorism is one of the main theoretical frameworks within social psychology, its main objective is
to predict and control human behavior. The approach of this paper aims to provide a broad overview
regarding to the historical background that contributed to the emergence of this theory, its founders,
and their philosophical and methodological foundations of behaviorism. Behaviorism is primarily
focused on observable behavior rather than on the thought process or emotion. This school of thought
can be split into two main fields: Classical conditioning (Pavlov, Watson) and Operant conditioning
(Thorndike, Skinner) Classical conditioning can be defined as reflexive or automatic type of learning
in which a stimulus acquires the capacity to evoke a response that was originally evoked by another
stimulus. (McLeod, 2013) This means taking a neutral stimulus and pairing it with an unconditional
stimulus that provides the unconditioned response. Operant conditioning is not concerned with
automatic responses or reflexes. The science behind operant conditioning is learned behavior and
autonomous responses. It bases the responses on reward and punishment system to observe if it
strengthens or weakens a certain conscious behavior. Dr. Ivan Pavlov was a Russian scientist who
lived from 1849 1936. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology. Trying to study the digestive
system of dogs, he came a cross a legendary discovery. Pavlov birthed the first theory of behaviorism,

The Economic Factors And Aspects Of The French Industrial...
The Industrial Revolution in France occurred after the other revolutions throughout Europe; however,
they experienced an increase of the pace of their industrialism despite not exactly developing as
quickly as other countries in Europe. The competition from the other industries seen in foreign areas
caused the revolution in France. Unfortunately, many people with specialized, artisanal skills had to
give up their trade. The largest shift of this nature was those who spun cotton and wool had to give
their consumers and production over to the developing textile industry. The cottage industries, those
jobs completed from one s home, in France became extremely difficult for citizens. Those who
worked in those industries could not find jobs that paid enough for survival. Degradation of the family
economy gave rise to cultural shifts in the working class as families had less control over their lives.
Many men were forced to make more money by traveling with the construction industry to build
methods for transportation like railways and canals. Their industrial revolution also spawned the
creation of poor and middle class as well as recurring and violent labor strikes. The living conditions
of workers in France spiraled as wages decreased and starvation became commonplace. Production,
factories, and workers became more expensive as the skill needed to perform jobs decrease. Despite
all the negative aspects of the French industrial revolution, France was also a capital for

Advantages to a Rigorous Approach to Environmental Virtue...
A good ethical theory requires both logical rigor and intuitive appeal to provide an effective tool for
understanding what is right and what is wrong. In the field of environmental ethics, there has been
significant scholarship in developing a duty ethics based on the inherent value of nature, most notably
by Paul Taylor. Taylor indeed provides a logically clear argument for protecting the environment by
building on the principles he calls the biocentric outlook (Taylor, 99). While this scholarship has been
helpful in offering an explanation for what those who value the environment intuitively recognize,
some have noticed that it does not provide positive answers to how we should live (Cafaro, 31). Virtue
ethicists, on the other hand, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additional insight is gained by examining the formal conditions presented by Taylor (Taylor, 27.). A
summary of these conditions is that an ethical system must be: general in form, universal in
application and, as a standard of right and wrong, it must outweigh any non moral concerns.
Because of this universal nature, these systems are described as normative ethics (as opposed to meta
ethics, which describes the nature of ethics itself, or applied ethics which applies an ethical standard to
a practical situation). Any discussion of norms quickly encounters the problems familiar to the other
branches of philosophy: Are universal norms? If there are how can we know what they are? How do I
demonstrate that something is a norm? These questions are far beyond the scope of any one system of
normative ethics and certainly beyond this paper. Thus, we must leave an elaborate justification for the
reason for adopting a specific set of norms to different discussion.
To that end, I propose that the purpose of a system of ethics should be to identify a self consistent set
of normative claims that would be accepted by any morally responsible individual . Where a morally
responsible individual is defined as someone whom other morally responsible individuals identify as
such. This definition is obviously self referential and poses yet more questions that are beyond the
scope of this paper. However, this definition can provide a minimal criterion

Boys Don T Cry Film Techniques
Boys Don t Cry, a movie released in 1999, tells a story of events that took place in Nebraska during
1993. The movie chronicles the story of Teena Brandon, a 20 year old female to male transgendered
person, who moves from Lincoln to Falls City, Nebraska, a small, rural town. He moves to Falls City
to escape the sexual/gender oppression and violence he experienced in Lincoln. From his arrival in
Lincoln, Brandon dresses and socializes as a male. He makes a group of friends, girls and men. She
falls in love and is sexually intimate with one of the girls. When two of the men Brandon has also
befriended discover (by force) that Brandon is genetically a woman, they rape and batter him.

The reality is that many places are just as bad including those semi rural areas where my Mother and
Father were born. However, people had fun there, including me on many occasions. When viewed
through a gendered lens, the people in Falls City Nebraska during 1993 as depicted in this movie were
no doubt unhappy. However, the unhappiness was not merely a function of where they lived, the lack
of opportunity and mobility, or even their unfortunate economic circumstances. People can live happy
lives while being burdened by all of the above. The message of the movie, as I see it, was that gender
stereotypes and prejudices can destroy many people whose mental, emotional and physical framework
doesn t fit the acceptable definitions of male and female . In the case of those who are forced to
repress their feelings and are somehow able to play by the gender rules , I find it difficult to believe
real happiness will be in the cards for them. And even those people who actually believe and/or accept
the rigid definitions of gender and appropriate behavior will live diminished lives that are less full,
less interesting and far less

Comparison Of Mcdonald s V. Stella Liebeck Case
The details in the McDonald s v. Stella Liebeck case are very similar to the details of the case in Class
Action. However, the legal knowledge surrounding the cases were different. For example, in Class
Action the company Argo knowingly put out a defective car because it was more financially
convenient to pay for settlements than it would have been to recall every single vehicle and fix them.
Similarly, McDonald s was aware that their coffee was held at very hot temperature standards that
were extremely dangerous to their unknowing customers. McDonald s argued on the basis that
consumers preferred hot coffee so it was good for profit (Haltom, McCann 2004). A McDonald s
safety consultant testified that they received 700 complaints of burns ... Show more content on

Additionally, one of the plaintiff s had family members die because of the defective car. They both had
reasonable claims to sue so they both filed a lawsuit against two powerful corporations.
There were differences in the way the case and the prosecution and defendants lawyers were portrayed
in the film and in the McDonald s vs. Liebeck case. Stella Liebeck s case was portrayed as acquisitive
and soon was manipulated to represent the flaws in the civil justice system. The media reconstructed
her case into fragmented bits and transformed it to symbolize the lawsuit crisis (Haltom, McCann
2004). The media left out a great amount of crucial information and evidence that was critical to the
decision making of the jury (Haltom, McCann 2004). In fact, mass media stressed the amount of
money Liebeck was awarded by the jury, and failed to mention that Liebeck actually received less
than 1/5th of what the jury mandated (Haltom, McCann 2004). They also failed to mention the
severity of Liebeck s burns and the extreme heat of the coffee as well as McDonald s complete
disregard for consumer safety (Haltom, McCann 2004). Most general knowledge surrounding the case
is false and in favor of McDonald s perspective.
In Class Action, the plaintiff s attorney was depicted as a civil rights attorney whose main focus was
not to make money. Rather, he was more interested in attacking the establishment and defending
victims who were

How To Switch Roles In Johann Sebastian Bach
The sixteenth notes in the red box acts as a junction into having the two soloists switch roles and gives
the intro to the second theme a lot of suspended and anticipated notes in the sequence. Moreover, the
blue box in figure 7.1 represents the exact same lyrical line in figure 5.2 except this time the roles are
now switched; the first violin solo showcase the moving sixteenth notes first, followed by a group of
eighth notes with the second violin solo, then the second violin solo repeats the sixteenth notes
ascending and ends the bar with the two soloists together with eighth notes just like the previous
figure. As a continuation of using repetition, Bach goes as far as to have the soloists in the second
theme the measures after the group of simultaneous eighth notes switch roles again and have the
second violin solo start the theme and have the first violin solo follow as a sort of echo effect.

Positioning of dangerous product on the market and not recalling those dangers products are two of
the main examples of an unethical behavior in the field of product marketing. If such an unethical act

safety of the drivers and other people in the traffic is one of their main, if not the number one priority
then there is every reason for this case to leave a huge impact in the automobile world and consumers.
This case will be echoing for a long time and will be remembered for a long time. An example of a

There are eight categories regarding project failure and one of the biggest failure in the Ford Pinto
case is the quality failure. As I previously mentioned the car was developed and introduced to the
market only 25 months after they launched the project, the average time it takes is 43 months, Ford
Corporation decided to take a shortcut to save time, and did not test the rear end of the car. Even
though the engineers at Ford knew the problem with the gas tank, and that it cannot withstand a hit of
20mph they still released the car. Investing more time would allow them to come up with a solution or
find a different material that would prevent gas tanks from exploding, bursting in the flames, and
causing so many injuries. Quality is very underestimated these days, the main goal of big corporations
is to generate big amounts of revenues even if the product can be potentially lethal for the consumers.
The way to fix this problem is to implement stronger safety regulations and make company follow
them, those regulations should also be updated more frequently especially because there are new and
better innovations created practically every day nowadays. Another big project failure Ford
Corporation leaders made was to release the car besides the insufficient testing and being aware of the
flaws with the Pinto. The leaders of Ford consciously

Effects Of Divorce On The Workplace
Hannah Boyd
Professor Magrans

Effects of Divorce
On average in America 45 percent of marriages end in divorce. Divorce does not only affect the
parties involved; it also affects the children involved. In America, 40 percent of children will see and
experience divorce first hand alongside of their parents. Divorce is one of the most stressful events a
family can undergo. On average, 80 percent of children will be placed in the primary care of one
parent. Often times the parent that receives primary custody of the child or children are the biological
mother (Hopf, Sarah Marie). Divorce has many effects on different factors of a children s lives. Many
children are affected by divorce: divorce effects: 1. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Divorce in turn also negatively impacts the children s education. Children often have a set schedule of
when they will be at their mother s home, and when they will be at their father s home. When children
have to go back and forth between two homes they often experience a fall in their overall grades.
When children are going from one home to the next, they often have a hard time adjusting to the
different environments of the homes. This can make it difficult for the children to study or complete
their academic materials (Fagan Patrick F., and Robert Rector). Studies show children who have
divorced parents are twice as likely to repeat a grade or grades. The children are also five times more
likely to be expelled or suspended from school. They are twice as likely to drop out of high school,
which makes it less likely for them to attend college (Effects of Divorce on Children s Education).
Divorce also has a negative impact on a family s income. Children who have married parents, who
both work, have an average income of about $43,600 a year. When children are in a divorced family
with only one working parents, the family has an average income of about $25,300 a year. Families
who have faced divorce also face a higher risk of living in poverty. When a family is faced with
divorce the family will more than likely move into poverty due to the loss of one parent s income. On

Post Famine Research Paper
Famines have different demographic consequences. One is the increased number of resettlement and
displaced people, as famine victims search for food and other necessities (Kidane, 1989). Migration
poses a big threat on health and social structures, as people forcibly or wilfully search for survival.
Another demographic consequence is inevitably seen in the decrease of population. Mortality rates
peak during and after the famine, as people are still physically weak. However, post famine, fertility
rate will increase as families wish to have more children in insurance against future risk (Kidane,
1989).

Malnutrition continues to be ever present, leaving many communities relying on aid. Population
grows, but food production cannot keep up with the demand as there is no adequate development in
agriculture. Fig. 3 shows that while there has been a population growth of more than 20 million in
Ethiopia between 1992 and 2009, the number of malnourished people had decreased only by little.
How could the continuous problems of malnourishment be resolved or minimized? What communities
need is well developed coping systems on the local level. Humanitarian organisations should be
focusing on providing sustainable means locally, thus when drought occurs, locals have better ways of
coping. Markets have to regulated, thus, prices need to be fixed so that poor people can also afford to
buy grains.
Food production in Africa has to be improved dramatically. There is a food deficit as agricultural
development has not reached its full potential yet. African farmers today use almost no fertilizer and
only 4 percent of their cropland has been irrigated (Paarlberg, 2010). African governments should take

percent of the population depends on the farming sector, the government only invests 5 percent of its

Homelessness Problem
Homelessness has seen an increase in Portland even with the 10 year plan to end chronic
homelessness being enacted, falling behind the country as a whole in the quest to get the poor and
vulnerable indoors. Currently, the nation is nearing its ten year plan to end chronic homelessness,
which has resulted in little to no progress. This is quite concerning because a homeless person on the
street will cost the city more per year than if the city invested more in guiding the homeless into stable

What Were The Mayans Greatest Achievements
What Was The Mayan Culture s Greatest Achievement? Two buckets of salt for only one container of

was their most remarkable achievement. However, there really isn t much of a contest when you

someone to spank their children. On the other hand, 33 percent of Third Party voters agree with
spanking while the other 67 percent disagree with spanking. The Democratic voters are the ones
whose beliefs on spanking are quite evident only 13.86 of them agree with spanking while the rest, a
whopping 86.14 percent, do not agree with spanking their children. Do you notice a trend here? As
shown by the results of the survey, Democrats tend to not agree with corporal punishment. Although
this doesn t hold true every time (there are exceptions), if someone doesn t agree with corporal
punishment then they are extremely likely to be a Democrat. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This is because they carry their liberal ideas with them into other aspects of their life such as how they
punish their children. Also, the fact that America has gradually become more and more liberal and has
implemented liberal legislation into its government since then also explains why most liberals don t
use corporal punishment, which is because they believe that corporal punishment is outdated. Another
trend: since those who vote for Hillary Clinton carry their tolerance and empathy with them beyond
the voting posts also tend to believe that corporal punishment is old fashioned, they will most likely
not believe in using corporal punishment to discipline their children. All of these different trends make
it possible to explain how who a person votes for correlates with how they discipline their children,
and why voting for Hillary means someone is not likely to spank their

A Experiment On Separation And Purification Methods
This experiment introduces separation and purification methods used in research quite frequently.
These methods include hot vacuum filtration and recrystallization to purify a crude sample of
acetanilide containing two impurities. Recrystallization is a very common method that is used to
purify solids. This process dissolves a crude solid with impurities in a mildly boiling solvent, and
cooling down the mixture afterwards for crystals to reconstruct themselves in solution. This method
allows impurities to separate and remain in solution as precipitate or remain uniform in solution.
Solids are more soluble in hot solvents than in cold ones, allowing maximum dissolution for proper
separation and subsequent crystallization to occur. After purifying the compound, the melting point is
determined using the Mel Temp technology to compare to the written melting point to see how pure
the sample truly is. The proper steps of recrystallization include selecting a solvent that fits the
characteristic of all the components, water in this experiment. Then, dissolving a crude sample in the
chosen solvent (at or close to the solvent boiling point), forming solid in the solution as cooling takes
place, using vacuum filtration to isolate the purified solid, ridding the crystals of all impurities through
drying. In this experiment, recrystallization allows purification of 150 mg of crude acetanilide. Hot
vacuum filtration is a process used. The process requires using a filter flask, Pasteur

Persuasive Essay On The Fifth Amendment
As we sit and watch some of your favorite television shows, Blue Bloods, Criminal Minds, and The
Blacklist, we can catch the prominent phrases, right to remain silent... and/or I plead the fifth in one or
two scenes leading to interrogation. Although the television shows are fiction, the statements are
factual and are part of the U.S. Constitution to protect a person against self incrimination. Self
incrimination plays a vast part of the Bill of Right, specifically the Fifth Amendment. The Fifth
Amendment has protected many Americans from punishment. Yet, this Amendment also has made it
possible for guilty verdicts in criminal cases. This was possible with the historical adoption of the
Fifth Amendment, the implementation of the five different clauses, and numerous criminal cases that
established the strength of the Fifth Amendment.
The philosophies behind the Fifth Amendment traced back to Magna Carta, 1215. The Magna Carta
specified that No person shall ... be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law ...
. Although England s King John did not agree to the term willingly, the Magna Carta was signed in
hope to build a relationship between the King and the nobles and keep the peace. Unfortunately, the
signed Magna Carta annulled by Pope Innocent II. In 1613, Sir Edward Coke also advocated for the
Magna Carta as part of his approach toward the power struggle of the courts. Coke argued that all
matters needed to be addressed through the law of the

The Company s New President And Ceo
REPORT ENDIUS INC. Sonam Mhaskar
Introduction
Tom Davison, the company s new president and CEO, recognized that although the prototype had
served its basic purposes proving the concept was technically viable and that surgeons were eager to
use such an instrument for minimally invasive surgery the prototype design was too costly for a
commercially successful product in an era of managed care and other initiatives aimed at controlling
health care costs. Because of limited cash and external resources and the need to enter the market as
soon as possible with a viable product, Endius outsourced product development to Product Genesis, a
product design consultancy. Now, Davison has to establish a target cost to ensure that the final product
will achieve the market acceptance necessary to not only provide needed cash flow but also to build
Endius s reputation and customer base for follow on products.

Over the past century we have seen a number of technological achievements that have improved the
living standards in Australia. With inventions ranging from the television to the affordable car, all
these achievements have come together to make the modern country Australia which many call the
lucky country . There are three main technological advancements that were pivotal during post WW2
in making the country that we know today.
The development of an affordable car in the early 1950s changed the way people lived their lives by
making private travel faster and more efficient. For once people were no longer limited to the place
where they lived, people who lived in remote areas of Australia were less isolated with the car
increasing their connectedness with urban areas in Australia. Employment opportunities increased for
people who owned a car because they were no longer limited to jobs within their local area, also
having benefits to the economy by decreasing times from going to and from work. People were also
able to go on holidays to further places for cheaper prices which increased the amount of business in

  • 2. White Tigers From The Woman Warrior Essay Maxine Hong Kingston once said, I ve been writing since I was 7, but before that, I was orally making stories. This quote expresses Kingston s fervor for writing and storytelling outside of her short story White Tigers from the Woman Warrior , which emphasizes the importance of literature, which is her art, by retelling her own childhood as the fairy tale of the Woman Warrior, Fa Mu Lan, and connecting it back to her own life. The introductory paragraphs, coupled with the word carving scene and the concluding final paragraphs, evoke Fa Mu Lan and present Maxine s life as analogous to Fa Mu Lan s life story. While it is understood that they did not know each other, Maxine complicates this relationship , for lack of a better word, by using a first person narrative as opposed to a third person narrative while retelling the fairy tale , which in turn complicates subjectivity of Maxine, and the relationship between Maxine and Fa Mu Lan. Moreover, the words in the word carving scene in the middle of the fairy tale are double symbols of suffering and of perfect filiality, which is a trait common in Chinese culture. By and large, these early on passages, and each section from there on, and the word cutting scene, utilize the literary devices of point of view and central symbol to influence the audience to acknowledge Maxine s claim that Fa Mu Lan is her model, and that she, Maxine, is fruitful in taking after her case since they both have words at their backs. She interlocks the dramatic monologues of six characters at successive stages in their lives to tell her story; and prefaces each of the sections with a descriptive passage of sun and waves through a single day. In these passages descriptions of the sun, the sea, the plants, and the birds make implicit comparisons with the characters speeches. The actions of the birds in the descriptive passages most strikingly parallel the developing consciousness of the characters, exemplified by Susan. The birds developing singing abilities and early explorations parallel Susan s experiences in childhood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Anticipating her return home, she asserts, I cannot be divided, or kept apart (97) and describes the sensuous pleasures of home and country life. Further into the novel, the birds behavior corresponds to Susan s early adulthood, her prime, and her middle age. The birds sing alone, stridently . . . as if the song were urged out of them . . . as if the edge were being sharpened. They [descend] dry beaked, ruthless, abrupt (109), soar in high flights, observe, sever upon encountering a rock. At this reunion she learns that Bernard, whom she loves, has become engaged. Susan thinks that something irrevocable has happened. . . . We shall never flow freely again (142). • 6. Gender In Pride And Prejudice Extended Essay The man s sphere versus the woman s sphere in Jane Austen s Pride and Prejudice Abstract Introduction Jane Austen s novels are known for not only being enthralling but also as characteristic of British society in the nineteenth century. Her novels present a compelling view on the historical, psychological, and sociological issues woven into the plots that are full of irony, farce, and versatile characters. One of Jane Austen s most appreciated novels Pride and Prejudice illustrates the topic that I will explore in my extended essay, which is the male world versus the female one. In order to address my question How does social status and gender bias influence life decisions and perceptions of the world in Austen s Pride and Prejudice? I will investigate and portray the specific views of both gender s worlds as offered by Austen in comparison to the established ones from Nineteenth Century England. The social status and genders of the characters influence their lives in all aspects, from determining their perceptions of the world to limiting their potentials in life decisions. I strongly believe that my topic of choice is worth investigating; my work doesn t just outline the role of social rank and gender in Nineteenth Century England, it also includes widely accepted knowledge about intellectual differences between the genders and their interpersonal relationships. Furthermore my essay will be supplemented by unique insight into the life of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Technology And The Positive Aspects Of Technology In this day of age, almost everything has been become digital and you must now adjust to this new form. Even though technology has turned over to a new direction, there is still much to learn and benefit from. The good thing about today s technology is that it is much easier to use than how it was many years ago. Technology is always advancing and creating new things to learn. As this essay progresses, I will be discussing three types of technology that have been positive aspects in my life, all of which are currently greatly advancing. The first type of technology that I chose as a positive aspect of my life is the video game system, the Xbox. To begin with, I have bought all generations of the console since I was a kid. Growing up with this gaming system made my childhood very enjoyable and worthwhile. There are so many memories and positive lessons I have learned from playing video games. I used to enjoy playing on the Xbox systems with my childhood friend. It was just fun to play with not my friend, but many others in the world as well. This connected us to many other players around the globe who also had the same interests as us. This sparked the beginning of something new to me. Video games can help cope with many people s problems. There are some stereotypes that say that gamers are usually isolated and develop very few social skills. But that stereotype isn t necessarily true. Video games have been scientifically proven to help deal with anxiety, ADHD, stress, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. A Community Mental Health Team While Working With A Client... Introduction This literature review and research proposal was motivated following a practice placement with a Community Mental Health Team while working with a client with Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD). GAD is a long term condition that causes someone to feel anxious about a wide range of situations and issues, rather than one specific event. GAD is a common mental health condition affecting 1 in every 25 people in the United Kingdom, its prevalence is slightly more among women than men and individuals between the ages of 35 and 55 (NHSChoices, 2014). People with GAD feel anxious most days and often struggle to remember the last time they felt relaxed (NHSChoices, 2014). Feeling anxious is a normal response to stressful experiences, however when anxiety is prolonged, inappropriate, and/or overwhelming to the point that it impacts on functioning, it becomes a pathological disorder (Davis, 2011). The anxiety, worry, or physical symptoms cause significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning (APA, 2000). Studies have shown that GAD is more impairing than other anxiety disorders (Hoffmann et al., 2009); and people afflicted with GAD have reported significantly less satisfaction with their quality of life in particular in the domains of self esteem, goals and values, money, work, play, learning, creativity, friends and family (Henning et al., 2007). Thus GAD has a disabling impact on an individual s occupation performance ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Reasons For The Compromise Of 1877 Following the Compromise of 1877, many supporters of black rights, such as freed slaves or radical Republicans, believed that conditions for freed blacks were worse than they had been when they were enslaved. Though there were definitely upsides to freedom from slavery, many conditions blacks lived under either didn t change or got worse after the Compromise. For example, the removal of the military from the South allowed the southern government to pass laws limiting blacks rights, meaning the social, political and economic conditions after the compromise were similar to the ones they had lived with under slavery; the legalization of segregation made it more difficult for blacks to influence white perception of their race; and violence against blacks increased, and white protection of them decreased, as many saw them as less valuable once they had been released from slavery. The compromise ended the reconstruction, which meant that the military presence in the south, which had been virtually the only thing keeping a semblance of order, was removed. This resulted in widespread and often unpunished violence against blacks. It also left the southern government free to operate by itself, and measures were quickly taken to limit the rights of blacks. Education budgets were cut, sharecropping regulations were changed in order to favor plantation owners, and the right to vote was taken away from blacks. Blacks were free from slavery, but they had nearly the exact same ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The claim that three million war poems were written in Germany in the first six months of hostilities is difficult to substantiate, but Catherine W. For example, William Watson (then an esteemed poet, today virtually forgotten) quickly decided that his war poems should be so much in evidence that people [would] be saying that W.W. is the real national poet in this crisis , and had sixteen different war poems printed in various newspapers in the first six weeks. • 22. The Theoretical Frameworks Within Social Psychology Essay Behaviorism is one of the main theoretical frameworks within social psychology, its main objective is to predict and control human behavior. The approach of this paper aims to provide a broad overview regarding to the historical background that contributed to the emergence of this theory, its founders, and their philosophical and methodological foundations of behaviorism. Behaviorism is primarily focused on observable behavior rather than on the thought process or emotion. This school of thought can be split into two main fields: Classical conditioning (Pavlov, Watson) and Operant conditioning (Thorndike, Skinner) Classical conditioning can be defined as reflexive or automatic type of learning in which a stimulus acquires the capacity to evoke a response that was originally evoked by another stimulus. (McLeod, 2013) This means taking a neutral stimulus and pairing it with an unconditional stimulus that provides the unconditioned response. Operant conditioning is not concerned with automatic responses or reflexes. The science behind operant conditioning is learned behavior and autonomous responses. It bases the responses on reward and punishment system to observe if it strengthens or weakens a certain conscious behavior. Dr. Ivan Pavlov was a Russian scientist who lived from 1849 1936. The Industrial Revolution in France occurred after the other revolutions throughout Europe; however, they experienced an increase of the pace of their industrialism despite not exactly developing as quickly as other countries in Europe. The cottage industries, those jobs completed from one s home, in France became extremely difficult for citizens. Those who worked in those industries could not find jobs that paid enough for survival. Degradation of the family economy gave rise to cultural shifts in the working class as families had less control over their lives. Many men were forced to make more money by traveling with the construction industry to build methods for transportation like railways and canals. Their industrial revolution also spawned the creation of poor and middle class as well as recurring and violent labor strikes. A good ethical theory requires both logical rigor and intuitive appeal to provide an effective tool for understanding what is right and what is wrong. In the field of environmental ethics, there has been significant scholarship in developing a duty ethics based on the inherent value of nature, most notably by Paul Taylor. Taylor indeed provides a logically clear argument for protecting the environment by building on the principles he calls the biocentric outlook (Taylor, 99). While this scholarship has been helpful in offering an explanation for what those who value the environment intuitively recognize, some have noticed that it does not provide positive answers to how we should live (Cafaro, 31). A summary of these conditions is that an ethical system must be: general in form, universal in application and, as a standard of right and wrong, it must outweigh any non moral concerns. Because of this universal nature, these systems are described as normative ethics (as opposed to meta ethics, which describes the nature of ethics itself, or applied ethics which applies an ethical standard to a practical situation). Any discussion of norms quickly encounters the problems familiar to the other branches of philosophy: Are universal norms? If there are how can we know what they are? How do I demonstrate that something is a norm? These questions are far beyond the scope of any one system of normative ethics and certainly beyond this paper. Thus, we must leave an elaborate justification for the reason for adopting a specific set of norms to different discussion. To that end, I propose that the purpose of a system of ethics should be to identify a self consistent set of normative claims that would be accepted by any morally responsible individual . Stella Liebeck s case was portrayed as acquisitive and soon was manipulated to represent the flaws in the civil justice system. The media reconstructed her case into fragmented bits and transformed it to symbolize the lawsuit crisis (Haltom, McCann 2004). The media left out a great amount of crucial information and evidence that was critical to the decision making of the jury (Haltom, McCann 2004). In fact, mass media stressed the amount of money Liebeck was awarded by the jury, and failed to mention that Liebeck actually received less than 1/5th of what the jury mandated (Haltom, McCann 2004). They also failed to mention the severity of Liebeck s burns and the extreme heat of the coffee as well as McDonald s complete disregard for consumer safety (Haltom, McCann 2004). How To Switch Roles In Johann Sebastian Bach The sixteenth notes in the red box acts as a junction into having the two soloists switch roles and gives the intro to the second theme a lot of suspended and anticipated notes in the sequence. Moreover, the blue box in figure 7.1 represents the exact same lyrical line in figure 5.2 except this time the roles are now switched; the first violin solo showcase the moving sixteenth notes first, followed by a group of eighth notes with the second violin solo, then the second violin solo repeats the sixteenth notes ascending and ends the bar with the two soloists together with eighth notes just like the previous figure. As a continuation of using repetition, Bach goes as far as to have the soloists in the second theme the measures after the group of simultaneous eighth notes switch roles again and have the second violin solo start the theme and have the first violin solo follow as a sort of echo effect. As I previously mentioned the car was developed and introduced to the market only 25 months after they launched the project, the average time it takes is 43 months, Ford Corporation decided to take a shortcut to save time, and did not test the rear end of the car. Even though the engineers at Ford knew the problem with the gas tank, and that it cannot withstand a hit of 20mph they still released the car. Investing more time would allow them to come up with a solution or find a different material that would prevent gas tanks from exploding, bursting in the flames, and causing so many injuries. Quality is very underestimated these days, the main goal of big corporations is to generate big amounts of revenues even if the product can be potentially lethal for the consumers. The way to fix this problem is to implement stronger safety regulations and make company follow them, those regulations should also be updated more frequently especially because there are new and better innovations created practically every day nowadays. When children are going from one home to the next, they often have a hard time adjusting to the different environments of the homes. • 44. A Experiment On Separation And Purification Methods This experiment introduces separation and purification methods used in research quite frequently. These methods include hot vacuum filtration and recrystallization to purify a crude sample of acetanilide containing two impurities. Recrystallization is a very common method that is used to purify solids. This process dissolves a crude solid with impurities in a mildly boiling solvent, and cooling down the mixture afterwards for crystals to reconstruct themselves in solution. This method allows impurities to separate and remain in solution as precipitate or remain uniform in solution. Solids are more soluble in hot solvents than in cold ones, allowing maximum dissolution for proper separation and subsequent crystallization to occur. After purifying the compound, the melting point is determined using the Mel Temp technology to compare to the written melting point to see how pure the sample truly is. The proper steps of recrystallization include selecting a solvent that fits the characteristic of all the components, water in this experiment. Then, dissolving a crude sample in the chosen solvent (at or close to the solvent boiling point), forming solid in the solution as cooling takes place, using vacuum filtration to isolate the purified solid, ridding the crystals of all impurities through drying.
