Larkin Two Trees
How do Don Paterson and Phillip Larkin try to capture a message about life in their poems Two Trees
and The Trees?
In the two poems, Two Trees by Don Paterson and The Trees by Phillip Larkin, the poems explore life
and death through their seemingly black and white poems. In Two Trees , Paterson explores the
themes of creativity and perception while Larkin ponders the illusions of life and how things are
perceived. The messages in their poems can be seen in their contrasting uses of symbolism, imagery,
rhyme and metre, and structural form.
The two poems both make use of symbolism to convey their message to the reader. Two Trees shows
this through wordplay such as rooted in his head . Here the word rooted both means that he has an idea

Two Trees has a linear structure, in chronological order, to convey how easy it is to see things in
different lights. Likewise, the poem has a very strong connection to the number two, particularly due
to the rhyme and metre, but it also has two stanzas, each one showing a different point of view on the
trees and the dream that had them graft ed together. The poem also contains many enjambments,
which, like thoughts, continue onto the next line. In Don Miguel s stanza, they are carefree, like his
thoughts, but The Man s are more impartial, as if he couldn t care at all. The Man s stanza also seems
to speed up, with the enjambments rushing the stanza, almost as if, like him, the poem is hasty and
thoughtless, and rushes into things. Contrastingly, The Trees by Philip Larkin has a circular structure,
returning to the beginning each stanza and it also returns to the beginning of the poem at the end. It
mirrors itself, starting with life, then death, and ending with life. However, throughout it is becoming
softer; there are more vowels at the beginning, which makes the beginning sound harsher. Overall,
both poems use structure to express a message, but the overriding similarity is both poems ability to
mirror themselves in different

Essay about The Mexican War by Otis A. Singletary
This book by Otis A. Singletary deals with different aspects of the Mexican war. It is a compelling
description and concise history of the first successful offensive war in United States military history.
The work examines two countries that were unprepared for war. The political intrigues and quarrels in
appointing the military commanders, as well as the military operations of the war, are presented and
analyzed in detail. The author also analyzes the role that the Mexican War played in bringing on the
U.S. Civil War.
The Mexican American War of the 1840s, precipitated by border disputes and the U.S. annexation of
Texas, ended with the military occupation of Mexico City by General Winfield Scott. In the
subsequent treaty, the United ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The book uses maps and pictures. Maps and pictures are really helpful in visualizing what is being
described, and they allow having and idea of how it was during this war.
The book is simple and easy to read. The author has a good use of English language. He uses specific
words, therefore making his book highly readable.
The book not only give facts that can be found in any history book that deals with this period of
American history (1840 s), but it also makes the reader appreciate a war that has been undermined by
another very popular war, the Civil war. It explains that the annexation of Texas was not the only
reason for going into war; since there were other factors that motivated Americans anger towards
Mexican military which set the stage for conflict. the annexation of Texas was merely the immediate
cause of hostilities. This gives readers another perspective about the war.
Furthermore, Singletary does a great job in describing how politic interest affected the war greatly. For
example Taylor s desire for politic advancement, and how president Polk try to
Writer Joseph Chance stated the following: Otis Singletary s The Mexican War is a concise and
excellent overview of the war. Its greatest strength is the way it brings the personalities and personal
conflicts to life. It provides great insight into the way politics intruded

Barometer Rising
Much literature is based on the theme of a Quest, a search for something that seems ultimately
desirable. There are quests for power, quests for identity, quests for self respect, quests for happiness,
quests for understanding and quests for independence. All of these quests are present in the novel,
Barometer Rising. There are four main characters that experience life quests in this novel. These
characters include Colonel Geoffery Wain, Neil Macrae, Angus Murray, Roddie Wain and Penny
Wain. Throughout the novel these characters all experience different quests with very different
outcomes. The first evident quest arouse in the novel is a quest for power. This quest is associated with
Colonel Geoffrey Wain. Throughout the novel, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

recognizes him not because she actually knows him, but by his reputation. That man, that Major
Murray everyone knows about. She describes him as, Angus Murray! That man who used to ruin his
practice with drink wherever he went! Despite his reputation, Angus has had many challenges to deal
with in life, which clearly led to his drinking and failures. One of the main challenges he has been
presented with is an arm injury, which is what prevented him from doing his work as a doctor. At the
beginning of the novel the readers see that Angus has no desire to change his way of life, and that he
has settled with his unhappiness but inside Angus is searching for reason. After the Halifax explosion
we see the outcome of Murray s unconscious life quest for happiness. He rises to the needs of the
injured people and even does a very precise surgery on Penny Wain s eye. Angus overcomes his self
doubt and pity and realizes that he has real potential, his confidence in himself and quest for happiness
is fulfilled when realizing he is capable of helping the people after the explosion. Roddie Wain, Penny
s little brother, presents a small but important quest as well. Roddie undergoes a quest of
understanding. At the beginning of the novel

Factory Farms Is Not An Authentic Life At All
A life lived in confinement could be considered not an authentic life at all. Although being fed and
watered may keep someone or something alive, being restricted from fresh air, sunlight, freedom and
living in one s own feces can be detrimental. Poultry, pigs, and cattle all go through one of these
things if not all on factory farms. Factory farms, or Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations as well
as Intensive Livestock Operations, are industrial farms primarily managed and owned by large
corporations. A specific specie of animal is confined within a facility under strictly controlled
environments as part of factory farming. The main purpose of these farms is that they produce the
highest feasible output at the lowest possible cost. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

accurately emphasize how stressful factory farms are on the animals being confined and raised in them

they hatch, they are more commonly known by the industry as broilers . These chickens are
genetically manipulated to grow four times faster than the average due to selective breeding,
antibiotics, steroids, and overfeeding; from hatchlings to over weight, adult sized chickens in only a

as not being able to carry their own weight is common in chicken factory farms. Food nor water is
accessible to the chickens if they cannot get to it themselves, therefore, they are left for dead if not
stuffed in a bucket with rotting corpses to be taken to their grave . Another result of leg deformities in
these intelligent animals is ammonia burns, or hock burns. They are marks found

Gay Bars And Gay Nightclubs
Introduction Since the 1930s, gay bars and gay nightclubs have been around. The bar called White
Horse, in Oakland, California, has been opened since 1933. It is known to be the first gay bar to be
opened here in America. Being gay in the 1930s was brutal. Same gender sex was a felony, and being
caught in a gay bar could cost someone their job. In a society that viewed gays as barley human, the
White Horse allowed a level of freedom that in the 1940s or 1950s was liberating (Duffy 2016). With
time changes and people being more accepted, gay bars and gay nightclubs started opening all across
America. One of the many gay nightclubs here in Denver is known as Tracks. It was opened in 1980.
On October 5th, 2017, an experimental observation at the Tracks nightclub was made. During this
experience, it was observed that these people that identified as either gay, lesbian, or bisexual were
acting as normal human beings in a heterosexual nightclub. Although the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and
Transgender movement acts have been created to allow this community to be more opened and
unafraid, it has had a history of having psychological components such as depression, and social
components such as relationships with one another, and of course the history within hate crimes
towards the LGBT community.
Psychological component Gay nightclubs are a healthy heaven for the psychological well being of the

COMPUTERS have great importance in the world today. Since the beginning (first generation),
computer was invented mainly to help human to process complex computational/calculation. Type or

The processor was a separate component with just a memory bus interface, and all peripherals were
attached to this bus. As integration levels increase, more and more logic is added to the processor die,
creating families of application specific service processors. The term system on chip (SOC) is often
used to describe these highly integrated processors. These SOCs include much of the logic and
interfaces that are required for a range of specific target applications. The silicon vendors that develop
these SOC devices often create families of SOCs all using the same processor core, but with a wide
range of integrated capabilities or integrated devices such as general purpose input/output pins,
network interfaces such as Ethernet, USB, PCIe, serial ports, I2C (Inter Integrated Circuit), expansion
parallel buses, DSP and integrated display controllers. Many of these devices interface to nonvolatile
storage such as NOR Flash via Serial Peripheral Interconnect (SPI), and native bus interface types. As
a general rule, these integrated items are predominantly digital logic elements. Because we need to
add analog capabilities, features such as flash memory and digital/analog converters are common, but
these capabilities require special features of the silicon manufacturing process.
There are several main advantages of an SoC. First, SoC is slightly larger than a CPU,

Poverty Of The Wealthiest Country
Poverty in the Wealthiest Country
People often say that money cannot buy happiness. However, this statement is not applicable to
everyone. Bare minimum financial revenue is actually necessary to provide well being and happiness.
When the concept of poverty comes up, usually the first image in our minds is people living in
developing countries such as those in Africa; however, first world countries are not safe from this
issue. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 14.5% of the United States population are living under
the poverty line; that is, 45.3 million people struggling everyday to afford essential life items such as
food, healthcare, transportation, clothes, and housing in the world s wealthiest country (Income and
Poverty in the United States). Poverty has distressful effects on the poor as individuals and on the
society as whole. It poses health and financial hardships on the individual; and threatens the safety and
productivity of the society. The root causes can be classified into three categories; economic factors
being the primary, social and educational factors being the secondary.
Poverty is a serious issue that has been traumatizing and spreading despite the efforts being made to
combat it. Impoverished people suffer from the lack of jobs and education that would otherwise
improve their situation. They are subject to greater physical and mental health risks such as
malnutrition and depression. Children suffer the most; they are deprived from their basic

The Conflict between Man and Machine in The Naked and the...
While the surface of Norman Mailer s The Naked and the Dead centers around World War II, its focus
is on the conflict...between the mechanistic forces of the system and the will to individual integrity
(Waldron 273). The ultimate domination by the machine makes for a very depressing, hopeless novel.
Mailer explores this conflict mainly in the interactions between General Cummings and Lieutenant
Hearn, and although less extensively through their lower ranked counterparts, Sergeant Croft and
Private Red Valsen. It is in these interactions that The Naked and the Dead makes a statement about
not only war, but society. Therefore, in order to fully understand the novel, Cummings, Hearn, Croft,
and Valsen must be examined and understood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The mountain which dominates the island dominates the men with its motionless hostility. The sea
around them wears all things down and is full of death. The land itself becomes terrifying in its
somnolent brooding resistance. It seems as if there is a cosmic conspiracy against men, as if
something working through the various forces of nature is seeking to bring them to a standstill, erase
their identities, annihilate them altogether (Siegel 291 292).
The men must take the island from the Japanese, and General Cummings formulates a grandiose plan
involving a reconnaissance mission, given to Croft s platoon, a general forward attack, and an
amphibious invasion from the other side of the island in order to surround the Japanese. It is while he
is planning this attack that he and Hearn have their own intellectual battle. Hearn loses. Cummings
then assigns him to Croft s platoon, as leader of the reconnaissance mission going behind enemy lines.
Croft is infuriated that he has been taken out of his position of power, and eventually kills Hearn. By
the time that the platoon returns to the main base, the island has been taken, but not by Cummings
plan. Another American force avoided all the detailed planning, and simply wiped out the Japanese on
the island in one strike. The reconnaissance mission was never needed, did nothing for the war effort,

Ars Poetica By Macleish Essay
The poem Ars Poetica by Archibald MacLeish asks and then answers the question: What makes a
poem, a poem. As the poem progresses many traits are described, but in metaphor and simile. A poem
should be wordless as the flight of birds. Or A poem must be motionless in time as the moon climbs.
From these lines and other lines in the poem, the answer to what makes a poem, a poem can be found.
The first description given of a poem is A poem should be palpable and mute as a globed fruit. The
fruit, as a poem should be, palpable. We can hold it and see it. But as a globed fruit, you can hold it,

A poem should be able to speak truths, but they shouldn t be evident. One shouldn t look at a poem
and be able to only find a single truth, many truths could apply to any poem, and it is up to the reader
to find out what that poem means to them. Next in the poem is what a poem should be for love. The
leaning grasses and two lights above the sea The answer to what that means is not explicitly said in the
poem, and is up to the readers perspective. The imagery created by the line, gives an idea of what a
poem for love should be. It should evoke thought and in a way, evoke emotions, just as emotions are
evoked by the imagery of The leaning grasses and two lights above the sea . Lastly, to close the poem,
MacLeish says A poem should not mean but be. This line reflects what the poem has said since the
beginning. A poem should not explicitly say what it means and have one correct answer as to what the
poem means. The poem is just words that evoke an image or an opinion in the readers mind, and the
reader is the one who finds meaning. A poems job is not to have a direct meaning that you can find by
reading through, a poem is meant to just be what it means and give the reader imagery to find that

An Individual With Visual Impairment
Today, I will attempt to understand what it is like for an individual with a visual impairment to
complete a task that would be very simple for an individual with sight. This exercise is being
conducted to help me gain an understanding of how an individual with visual impairment would
approach this task. I will try to make myself some cereal, eat it, and clean up my mess. My son Jason
will remain in the kitchen with me as a protective measure.
I stand in the middle of the kitchen while the blindfold is applied to my eyes. Immediately, it is dark.
My first thought is what is the easiest to get for a bowl of cereal. I decided to get a bowl from the
counter. I rely on my memory to guide me to the cabinet through feeling for the counter top to the left
of my position, then I reach up to grab a bowl. I feel around with my hand to make sure that I am at
the top of the stack of bowls and then I grab the bowl. I feel with my right hand to make sure there is a
free space for my bowl on the counter and that I am not to close to the edge. Then with my right hand,
I close the cabinet. I edge myself over to the left again, following the counter top. As I reach the end, I
stretch out my arm to help guide me towards the stove. The spoons are in the left lower drawer. I open
the drawer and feel the different utensils. I find the small size spoon and pull it out. I then make my
way back across the kitchen to place the spoon beside the bowl. I go back to the stove area the same

This proves that if patients ask for help, life will get better. The two girls in the article, Zoe and

depression and how life does get better, the suicide rate will possibly go down and the number of
people who have depression will slowly decrease due to reaching out. A recent discovery, using
psilocybin to help cure depression, could wipe out depression completely. Psilocybin is an innovative
solution that should be put to use as soon as possible. In the study stated above, After one week, all
reported improvement in their depression and 2/3 of the people were depression free (Park 1). By
using psilocybin, it is proven to work and possibly be a new, natural way to cure depression without

works to cure depression by causing depressed patients to vividly remember happy memories, since
they have been stuck in the negative for so long. Psychotherapy is an alternative but, by using the
mushrooms you could have almost instant results and your life could potentially be changed forever.
The people that were tested using psilocybin saw a boost in their mood and almost all of the patients
were cured. So many depressed people don t speak up about their illness, which causes negative

What Is The Relationship Between Morality And Morality
Freedom and morality is connected to each other. We have freedom to do things and to decide things
for ourselves. But morality teaches us to choose from the right and the wrong behavior. Morality is
concerned about the values, conducts, and principles of a certain person while freedom is being able to
make your own decisions and getting it done. These two have a big relationship with each other
because they must be given importance in our lives. What is the deeper relationship between freedom
and morality? And what can be done to have them both? Morality falls under the concept of dictum
which tells us, to do good and to avoid evil. It can be observed in our everyday living. We can see it
even in the simplest act that a person is doing. For example, a student decides to study and take a
review at night. Morality comes in because that student has a choice and she has chosen to do the
good thing rather than doing other things. Morality and ethics both focuses on the human conduct. It
deals with the standards of right doings and the wrong ones. But there is also a big difference between
the two. Morality talks about the right and wrong doings while ethics are the moral principles.
Meaning ethics is can be considered under morality. It is like a step where a person chooses from
doing the right or wrong thing. When she already had a decision and she stands for it, ethics will come
on its way. The moral ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

There are so many destructive choices that teenagers make when they have nothing to keep their

Adderall, Opioid painkillers, Synthetic marijuana, Tranquilizers, Cough medicine, Vicodin,
Hallucinogens, OxyContin, Sedatives, Ecstasy (MDMA), LSD, Cocaine, Ritalin, Inhalants, and Salvia
as well as drinking alcoholic beverages while definitely under age. The CDC says that people from the
ages of 12 to 20 make up 11 percent of all alcohol consumed in the United States. Federal law in the
United States says that you must be 21 or older to consume alcohol or any sort. That 11 percent may
not seem so huge when you consider all of the alcohol being consumed by the United States each year,
but remember that 11 percent are all teens and kids under the legal drinking age. However drinking is
not the only path teenagers can choose out of boredom. Teenagers are also turning to drugs of all sorts
no matter what kind of drug it is. As a matter of fact it is estimated that 3,300 try marijuana for the

grade through 12th grade have smoked pot sometime between the last month to the last year.

heroin. As a matter of fact 2.5 percent of teens have been caught up in cocaine use of some sort. On

Justice is a concept that has been debated for thousands of years, from the Greeks to modern western

the most foundational question in ethics, is it good in itself or is it a means for other things only.
Glaucon argues that justice is not intrinsic, rather we only care about justice because it leads to a better
life, in order to prolong the debate with Socrates; Socrates would tell you that justice is virtuous as an
end not as a means. This is the dilemma brought up in The Republic: Book II, in which Glaucon truly
wanted Socrates to prove ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Without justice the city crumbles is unhealthy, and that is how he declares justice being paramount to
Glaucon and the other friends. Virtue to Socrates is the only way to achieve eudaimonia, Greek for
happiness, good fortune, flourishing, and more. And I can concur with that, what I have a problem
with is his system of government, his way of achieving justice on a city scale, and thus you as an
individual should strive for it. It does not disprove justice, rather we should look to improve the
argument, much like other religious philosophers have tried to improve Ansam s ontological
argument. Socrates assumes that people know and naturally do what they should do for the rest of
their lives. People almost never know what they actually want to do, as we see college students switch
their majors around a lot, thus breaking the social rules of Socrates s ideal city, crumbling the
sociometric classes. Enough people will not be happy with such rules, creating an uproar big enough
to destroy the city s system. Destroying the city s system would by definition destroy the city, which
means that it will not be a just city, nor a city at all. Disproving the argument for justice, but not
disproving justice, nor part of his argument that states that you must have justice in the ideal city to

Doctor Career Research Paper
Playing doctor was something I enjoyed when I was a little kid. I loved caring for people, and babies
when they were born. I was a big help with my brother, sister and cousins. Caring for someone is my
biggest quality and making sure they are healthy is important to me. After looking through important
information on this career I found out the work environment, skills needed, level of education, the
salary and job outlook. I can see myself qualified for this future career as a Obstetricians and

many years of school because you have to get a Doctoral or Professional degree. In college you will

Figurative Language In A Devil In The White City
Have you ever known a psychopath who finds pleasure of going around and murdering thousands of
people? In Erik Larson s nonfiction novel, A Devil in the White City, published in 2003, he sets the
scene around the World s Fair in Chicago. During this time, the city preoccupies themselves with the
new construction and excitement of the fair that it draws away attention from the rather secretive, sly,
serial killer, H.H. Holmes. Larson uses figurative language, imagery, and juxtaposition throughout the
entire novel to develop just how sinister natured Holmes truly is.
Throughout his novel, Erik Larson uses figurative language to reference the iniquitous, hidden
personality displayed in Holmes. For example, the office building where Holmes portrays his work is
similar to an empty space, where the gaslight [cannot] reach (Larson 166) it fully, which evokes the
feelings of loneliness and detachment in the reader s mind. Holmes is never bothered with while
working and he often does his work solemnly in the dark, so nobody is able to watch him, allowing
the reader to see just how closed off he truly is. He then continues to show the reader Holmes more
demented side by alluding to Jack the Ripper s killings relating to the strokes of Van Gogh s paintings.
The way Holmes [slashes people s] throat (Larson 70) illustrates how Holmes sees murder as graceful,
like each killing is a new piece of art. By comparing Holmes to Jack the Ripper, it paints a vivid image
in the reader s head

White Log Analysis
The book White Fang was written by Jack London. Jack London wrote White Fang in the early 1900
s. White Fang s genre is realistic fiction. I know that this book is realistic fiction because it is a fake
story but could actually happen in the real world. This book is important because it shows the way of
life of a puppy in the wild.
White Fang takes place in the Northland wild. Northern Canada and Alaska is considered the
Northland. The Northland is a very cold place and does not have much life. This such place affects the
story because the story is about survival. It is hard to survive in a harsh, cold place. White Fang is
written in third person. I know this because the story uses the words he, she, it, they, and them. The
point of view of White Fang affects the story because it lets the reader understand all the characters
feelings throughout the story.
The protagonist in White Fang is White Fang. White Fang is a puppy in the story. He is the son of One
Eye and the she wolf. White Fang changes throughout the story by being a puppy that is learning
things to a fighter and has learned how to live and the rules of life. The she wolf is later referred to as
Kiche. Other characters in the novel are Bill and Henry. Bill and Henry are introduced at the
beginning of the story. They are the characters that give the wolf that was attacking them her name,
the she wolf. Weedon Scott is introduced toward the ending. He is White Fang s first loyal master.
Weedon Scott s father, Judge Scott, is also another character. There is actually more than one
antagonist in this novel. One of the antagonist is the wild. The wild gives White Fang hardships
throughout the story. Another antagonist is Beauty Smith. Beauty Smith makes White Fang fight other
dogs for money. The last antagonist is Lip lip. Lip lip is another pup at the camp that is bigger than
White Fang and always tries to fight him.
There are five main parts the plot of a book. The first part is called the exposition. After that is the
rising action, the climax, falling action, and the conclusion or resolution. The exposition of the story is
where Bill and Henry are on a sled dog trip in the Northern Land. This is a cold, harsh place with very
little life. Bill

Malaria Is A Disease That Affects The World s Poorest
CUNY Nobel Science Challenge Malaria is a disease that affects nearly 600 million people and causes
more than a million deaths a year, the most coming from children under five. This disease is regularly
found in more than 100 countries around the world and affects 40% of the world s population. It is
most commonly transmitted by an infected Anopheles mosquito. The most deadly form of malaria is
known as Plasmodium falciparum because almost all deaths from malaria are caused by this specific
one. Some of the symptoms that are affiliated with this strand of malaria are the destruction of red
blood cells along with complications with the kidneys, lungs, and brain. In more serious cases, it can
cause permanent neurological effects and even death. As the Nobel Assembly said at the
announcement of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, Diseases caused by parasites have
plagued humankind for a millennium and constitute a major global health problem. In particular,
parasitic diseases affect the world s poorest populations and represent a huge barrier to improving
human health and wellbeing . Youyou Tu, one of the winners of the prize, discovered Artemisinin, a
drug that has significantly reduced the mortality rates for patients suffering from malaria by killing the
malaria parasites an early stage of their development. The story on the creation of the drug
Artemisinin is an interesting one. During the Chinese Cultural Revolution, scientist trained in the West

Henry Ford s Impact On Society
More than any single person of the last century, Henry Ford can take accountability for creating the
American middle class. We can thank him or curse him, but either way, we have to acknowledge the
impact Henry Ford had on our society. You might not know that Henry Ford did not start out as a
successful producer of automobiles. After building his first car, the Quadricycle. In 1899 he formed
the Detroit Automobile Company, which quickly failed after only a few vehicles were produced.
(Stanford). Henry and some of his original investors regrouped and formed the Henry Ford Company
which quickly ran into problems as well. In 1902 Henry was dismissed by his board of directors from
the company that carried his name because of his inability to bring a car to production. The company
was reorganized as the Cadillac Motor Car Company under the engineering leadership of Henry
Leland. Henry and some of his original investors regrouped and formed the Henry Ford Company,
which quickly ran into problems as well. Henry Ford was dismissed by his board of directors from the
company that carried his name because of his inability to bring a car to production. In 1903 Henry
Ford felt he was ready to market an automobile for the public and the Ford Motor Company was
incorporated, this time with only $28,000 in cash put up by a new group of investors. That original
investment was spent down to $300 before the company s first car was sold, but from that time on the
company was a success.

Frederick Douglass An American Slave Summary
Logan Sewell
Peyser, Thomas. The Attack on Christianity in NARRATIVE OF THE LIFE OF FREDERICK
DOUGLASS, AN AMERICAN SLAVE. The Explicator 69.2: 86 89. In Peyser s article, The Attack on
Christianity in Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, he argues that
Douglass seems to believe that slavery is not a perversion of Christian doctrine but rather its perfect
embodiment. In the Narrative, Douglass desires to influence his audience beliefs that he is not against
all religions but instead desires to gain their support and raise uncertainties of Christianity itself.
Peyser writes about religion in the Narrative and how Douglass compares it to passages from the
Bible. Peyser also draws special attention to the appendix ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a direct allusion to the story of Adam and Eve and the apple tree that drew Eve in, prompting
her to make the first sin. Peyser states that in this type of reading, Douglass writes of the Colonel
setting himself up as a god . This also relates back to Mr. Covey, who believes the same. He truly
believes he s a devout Christian because he prays and believes the Bible tells him that slavery is.
Peyser writes that this is interesting because with himself believing him godlike, and Douglass writing
him as a snake, alluding back to Satan in the Bible, Covey both represents the overseer in terms that
suggest both God s omnipresence and Satan s readiness to strike at every opportunity . He backs up
this claim by adding in the quote from Douglass Narrative about Covey being behind every tree,
stump, bush, and window, and then adds, Satan and God show up primarily as layers of snares and
contenders for universal mastery, leaving us with two fundamentally comparable species of bondage:
to Satan on the one hand, to God on the

Karen Armstrong
The book, In the Beginning, by Karen Armstrong follows the first book of the Bible, Genesis. It
unfolds some very well known stories in Genesis. Armstrong goes through each of the stories of
Genesis and interprets what each story is about and how we can relate it to our own lives. The book of
Genesis can be difficult to understand and it holds many mysteries within it, but with the help of
Karen Armstrong, we are able to understand the stories of Genesis and what they mean.
This is the story of the Bible s first book, raw and unchurched. Karen introduces us one by one to the
characters and their stories, making no effort to turn them into saints, for they are nothing like the
impossibly and depressingly flawless characters we met in Sunday School. Throughout, the authors of
Genesis remind us that we can expect no clear cut answers. We wrestle with the text, measuring its
inconsistent doctrines and contradictory lessons, as we struggle to grasp the character of God. How
can God be omnipotent, but powerless to control his creation? How can God be benevolent but a
killer; wise but arbitrary; just but partial and unfair; omniscient but ignorant of human yearning?
One of the stories that Armstrong interpreted that I enjoyed was the one of Jacob and Esau. Jacob and
Esau were twin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her unquestioned acceptance of the JEPD theory of Genesis, that there are two main authors of
Genesis, J and E, whose words were then clumsily merged by a later editor, bothered me a little bit. I
have never found that theory of biblical criticism to be plausible, even though it has gained wide
acceptance in liberal circles. I also don t accept the conservative notion that Moses wrote the first five
books of the Bible. There is no question in my mind from a simple reading that the stories of Genesis
were collected and put together by a later editor, who wanted to show God s transcendent work in the
flawed descendants of

Jingxiu Nunnery Ancient India
14. Jingxiu Nunnery (Um retreat, Buddhist Convent)
Jingxiu Nunnery was located outside ancient city at the Outside West Gate Street. Prior to the Great

from the ancient city and around villages, even Baili Island and other distant pilgrims came here often,
burned incense and prayed, asked God to bless. Perhaps they were nunnery, women could not afford

concerned the international influence, so it was preserved, which revealed the Communist Party and
the government s religious policy.
Jingxiu Nunnery was not big. Above the front door, the Jingxiu Nunnery three Chinese characters

Analysis Of The Movie Memoirs Of A Geisha
Both Rob Marshall and Warwick Thornton have very distinctive and different directory movie styles.
However, In memoirs of a Geisha (Directed by Rob Marshall) and Samson Delilah (Directed by
Warwick Thornton) Both Warwick and Marshall are able to communicate their ideas of exploitation
similarly through a variety of shots and film techniques. These techniques are used in great succession
and are able to capture the audience to sympathize with these characters at their lowest points.
A scene in Samson Delilah that truly captured the essence of exploitation in modern day Australia was
a scene where Delilah tries to sell her artwork to an Aboriginal art gallery. The character Delilah as
previously mentioned is a fourteen year old ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The audience is then promptly shifted behind delilah with an over the shoulder shot and is quickly
glanced at by the art exhibitionist. We then hear I m not interested as we watch his attention drift back
to his computer. As the viewer we are all promptly taken back by this and can t help but sympathize
with Delilah. My immediate thought after this occurred was Why was Delilah dismissed so quickly?
This isn t fair! which I believe Warwick Thornton wanted his audiences to think. Warwick managed to
subtly instill discomfort into his viewers by putting us in a situation we can t help but feel
uncomfortable and sympathetic in which was used in great succession. We then switch back to where
the art exhibtionist is standing and watch as Delilah walks off emcombringly out of the shot as there is
a sharp focus on her while exiting. Once delilah has vanished out of the shot we are quickly
transitioned to the next scene as we see Delilah sitting on a hill looking off into the distance. We then
transition and see two school girls sitting on a bench. One with on her phone and the other eating ice
cream. The camera than shifts focus from these two unknown school girls to Delilah who s watching
in the background. This shot stays on Delilah for 7 seconds and I believe that this is very significant.
As previously mentioned Delilah does not look like she fits in, in fact based on her

  • 2. Larkin Two Trees How do Don Paterson and Phillip Larkin try to capture a message about life in their poems Two Trees and The Trees? In the two poems, Two Trees by Don Paterson and The Trees by Phillip Larkin, the poems explore life and death through their seemingly black and white poems. In Two Trees , Paterson explores the themes of creativity and perception while Larkin ponders the illusions of life and how things are perceived. The messages in their poems can be seen in their contrasting uses of symbolism, imagery, rhyme and metre, and structural form. The two poems both make use of symbolism to convey their message to the reader. Two Trees shows this through wordplay such as rooted in his head . Here the word rooted both means that he has an idea ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Two Trees has a linear structure, in chronological order, to convey how easy it is to see things in different lights. Likewise, the poem has a very strong connection to the number two, particularly due to the rhyme and metre, but it also has two stanzas, each one showing a different point of view on the trees and the dream that had them graft ed together. The poem also contains many enjambments, which, like thoughts, continue onto the next line. In Don Miguel s stanza, they are carefree, like his thoughts, but The Man s are more impartial, as if he couldn t care at all. The Man s stanza also seems to speed up, with the enjambments rushing the stanza, almost as if, like him, the poem is hasty and thoughtless, and rushes into things. Contrastingly, The Trees by Philip Larkin has a circular structure, returning to the beginning each stanza and it also returns to the beginning of the poem at the end. It mirrors itself, starting with life, then death, and ending with life. However, throughout it is becoming softer; there are more vowels at the beginning, which makes the beginning sound harsher. Overall, both poems use structure to express a message, but the overriding similarity is both poems ability to mirror themselves in different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay about The Mexican War by Otis A. Singletary This book by Otis A. Singletary deals with different aspects of the Mexican war. It is a compelling description and concise history of the first successful offensive war in United States military history. The work examines two countries that were unprepared for war. The political intrigues and quarrels in appointing the military commanders, as well as the military operations of the war, are presented and analyzed in detail. The author also analyzes the role that the Mexican War played in bringing on the U.S. Civil War. The Mexican American War of the 1840s, precipitated by border disputes and the U.S. annexation of Texas, ended with the military occupation of Mexico City by General Winfield Scott. In the subsequent treaty, the United ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The book uses maps and pictures. The author has a good use of English language. He uses specific words, therefore making his book highly readable. The book not only give facts that can be found in any history book that deals with this period of American history (1840 s), but it also makes the reader appreciate a war that has been undermined by another very popular war, the Civil war. It explains that the annexation of Texas was not the only reason for going into war; since there were other factors that motivated Americans anger towards Mexican military which set the stage for conflict. the annexation of Texas was merely the immediate cause of hostilities. This gives readers another perspective about the war. Furthermore, Singletary does a great job in describing how politic interest affected the war greatly. For example Taylor s desire for politic advancement, and how president Polk try to Writer Joseph Chance stated the following: Otis Singletary s The Mexican War is a concise and excellent overview of the war. Although being fed and watered may keep someone or something alive, being restricted from fresh air, sunlight, freedom and living in one s own feces can be detrimental. Poultry, pigs, and cattle all go through one of these things if not all on factory farms. Factory farms, or Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations as well as Intensive Livestock Operations, are industrial farms primarily managed and owned by large corporations. To accurately emphasize how stressful factory farms are on the animals being confined and raised in them from birth, chickens are the most abused due to their size and how fragile they are. • 6. Gay Bars And Gay Nightclubs Introduction Since the 1930s, gay bars and gay nightclubs have been around. The bar called White Horse, in Oakland, California, has been opened since 1933. It is known to be the first gay bar to be opened here in America. Being gay in the 1930s was brutal. Same gender sex was a felony, and being caught in a gay bar could cost someone their job. In a society that viewed gays as barley human, the White Horse allowed a level of freedom that in the 1940s or 1950s was liberating (Duffy 2016). With time changes and people being more accepted, gay bars and gay nightclubs started opening all across America. One of the many gay nightclubs here in Denver is known as Tracks. It was opened in 1980. On October 5th, 2017, an experimental observation at the Tracks nightclub was made. During this experience, it was observed that these people that identified as either gay, lesbian, or bisexual were acting as normal human beings in a heterosexual nightclub. Although the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender movement acts have been created to allow this community to be more opened and unafraid, it has had a history of having psychological components such as depression, and social components such as relationships with one another, and of course the history within hate crimes towards the LGBT community. As integration levels increase, more and more logic is added to the processor die, creating families of application specific service processors. These SOCs include much of the logic and interfaces that are required for a range of specific target applications. The silicon vendors that develop these SOC devices often create families of SOCs all using the same processor core, but with a wide range of integrated capabilities or integrated devices such as general purpose input/output pins, network interfaces such as Ethernet, USB, PCIe, serial ports, I2C (Inter Integrated Circuit), expansion parallel buses, DSP and integrated display controllers. • 9. Poverty Of The Wealthiest Country Poverty in the Wealthiest Country People often say that money cannot buy happiness. However, this statement is not applicable to everyone. Bare minimum financial revenue is actually necessary to provide well being and happiness. When the concept of poverty comes up, usually the first image in our minds is people living in developing countries such as those in Africa; however, first world countries are not safe from this issue. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 14.5% of the United States population are living under the poverty line; that is, 45.3 million people struggling everyday to afford essential life items such as food, healthcare, transportation, clothes, and housing in the world s wealthiest country (Income and Poverty in the United States). Poverty has distressful effects on the poor as individuals and on the society as whole. It poses health and financial hardships on the individual; and threatens the safety and productivity of the society. The root causes can be classified into three categories; economic factors being the primary, social and educational factors being the secondary. Poverty is a serious issue that has been traumatizing and spreading despite the efforts being made to combat it. While the surface of Norman Mailer s The Naked and the Dead centers around World War II, its focus is on the conflict...between the mechanistic forces of the system and the will to individual integrity (Waldron 273). The ultimate domination by the machine makes for a very depressing, hopeless novel. Mailer explores this conflict mainly in the interactions between General Cummings and Lieutenant Hearn, and although less extensively through their lower ranked counterparts, Sergeant Croft and Private Red Valsen. The men must take the island from the Japanese, and General Cummings formulates a grandiose plan involving a reconnaissance mission, given to Croft s platoon, a general forward attack, and an amphibious invasion from the other side of the island in order to surround the Japanese. It is while he is planning this attack that he and Hearn have their own intellectual battle. Hearn loses. Cummings then assigns him to Croft s platoon, as leader of the reconnaissance mission going behind enemy lines. Croft is infuriated that he has been taken out of his position of power, and eventually kills Hearn. • 17. What Is The Relationship Between Morality And Morality Freedom and morality is connected to each other. We have freedom to do things and to decide things for ourselves. But morality teaches us to choose from the right and the wrong behavior. Morality is concerned about the values, conducts, and principles of a certain person while freedom is being able to make your own decisions and getting it done. These two have a big relationship with each other because they must be given importance in our lives. What is the deeper relationship between freedom and morality? And what can be done to have them both? Morality falls under the concept of dictum which tells us, to do good and to avoid evil. It can be observed in our everyday living. We can see it even in the simplest act that a person is doing. For example, a student decides to study and take a review at night. Morality comes in because that student has a choice and she has chosen to do the good thing rather than doing other things. Morality and ethics both focuses on the human conduct. It deals with the standards of right doings and the wrong ones. But there is also a big difference between the two. Morality talks about the right and wrong doings while ethics are the moral principles. Meaning ethics is can be considered under morality. It is like a step where a person chooses from doing the right or wrong thing. When she already had a decision and she stands for it, ethics will come on its way. The moral ... So it only means that with freedom, we should have the responsibility. We should possess the responsibility to be morally aware of the things and the choices that we will pick up and make for ... Some of the different choices teenagers have made when bored are vandalism, speeding while driving, reckless endangerment, smoking, drugs like marijuana, Amphetamines, Adderall, Opioid painkillers, Synthetic marijuana, Tranquilizers, Cough medicine, Vicodin, Hallucinogens, OxyContin, Sedatives, Ecstasy (MDMA), LSD, Cocaine, Ritalin, Inhalants, and Salvia as well as drinking alcoholic beverages while definitely under age. The CDC says that people from the ages of 12 to 20 make up 11 percent of all alcohol consumed in the United States. Federal law in the United States says that you must be 21 or older to consume alcohol or any sort. That 11 percent may not seem so huge when you consider all of the alcohol being consumed by the United States each year, but remember that 11 percent are all teens and kids under the legal drinking age. However drinking is not the only path teenagers can choose out of boredom. Teenagers are also turning to drugs of all sorts no matter what kind of drug it is. As a matter of fact it is estimated that 3,300 try marijuana for the first time every day in the United States alone. A study has done that found that 12th graders who smoke marijuana are 65 percent more likely to get in a car accident. • 19. Glaucon s View Of Justice Justice is a concept that has been debated for thousands of years, from the Greeks to modern western society. Most people strive for justice, yet most would disagree with the answer of what is justice and how do we achieve it. Not only do proponents of justice need to offer clarification, they must also find the most foundational question in ethics, is it good in itself or is it a means for other things only. Glaucon argues that justice is not intrinsic, rather we only care about justice because it leads to a better life, in order to prolong the debate with Socrates; Socrates would tell you that justice is virtuous as an end not as a means. This is the dilemma brought up in The Republic: Book II, in which Glaucon truly wanted Socrates to prove ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Without justice the city crumbles is unhealthy, and that is how he declares justice being paramount to Glaucon and the other friends. Virtue to Socrates is the only way to achieve eudaimonia, Greek for happiness, good fortune, flourishing, and more. And I can concur with that, what I have a problem with is his system of government, his way of achieving justice on a city scale, and thus you as an individual should strive for it. It does not disprove justice, rather we should look to improve the argument, much like other religious philosophers have tried to improve Ansam s ontological argument. Socrates assumes that people know and naturally do what they should do for the rest of their lives. People almost never know what they actually want to do, as we see college students switch their majors around a lot, thus breaking the social rules of Socrates s ideal city, crumbling the sociometric classes. Enough people will not be happy with such rules, creating an uproar big enough to destroy the city s system. Destroying the city s system would by definition destroy the city, which means that it will not be a just city, nor a city at all. • 21. Figurative Language In A Devil In The White City Have you ever known a psychopath who finds pleasure of going around and murdering thousands of people? In Erik Larson s nonfiction novel, A Devil in the White City, published in 2003, he sets the scene around the World s Fair in Chicago. During this time, the city preoccupies themselves with the new construction and excitement of the fair that it draws away attention from the rather secretive, sly, serial killer, H.H. Holmes. Larson uses figurative language, imagery, and juxtaposition throughout the entire novel to develop just how sinister natured Holmes truly is. Throughout his novel, Erik Larson uses figurative language to reference the iniquitous, hidden personality displayed in Holmes. For example, the office building where Holmes portrays his work is similar to an empty space, where the gaslight [cannot] reach (Larson 166) it fully, which evokes the feelings of loneliness and detachment in the reader s mind. Holmes is never bothered with while working and he often does his work solemnly in the dark, so nobody is able to watch him, allowing the reader to see just how closed off he truly is. He then continues to show the reader Holmes more demented side by alluding to Jack the Ripper s killings relating to the strokes of Van Gogh s paintings. The way Holmes [slashes people s] throat (Larson 70) illustrates how Holmes sees murder as graceful, like each killing is a new piece of art. By comparing Holmes to Jack the Ripper, it paints a vivid image in the reader s head ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He truly believes he s a devout Christian because he prays and believes the Bible tells him that slavery is. Peyser writes that this is interesting because with himself believing him godlike, and Douglass writing him as a snake, alluding back to Satan in the Bible, Covey both represents the overseer in terms that suggest both God s omnipresence and Satan s readiness to strike at every opportunity . He backs up this claim by adding in the quote from Douglass Narrative about Covey being behind every tree, stump, bush, and window, and then adds, Satan and God show up primarily as layers of snares and contenders for universal mastery, leaving us with two fundamentally comparable species of bondage: to Satan on the one hand, to God on the ... The book of Genesis can be difficult to understand and it holds many mysteries within it, but with the help of Karen Armstrong, we are able to understand the stories of Genesis and what they mean. This is the story of the Bible s first book, raw and unchurched. Karen introduces us one by one to the characters and their stories, making no effort to turn them into saints, for they are nothing like the impossibly and depressingly flawless characters we met in Sunday School. Throughout, the authors of Genesis remind us that we can expect no clear cut answers. We wrestle with the text, measuring its inconsistent doctrines and contradictory lessons, as we struggle to grasp the character of God. How can God be omnipotent, but powerless to control his creation? How can God be benevolent but a killer; wise but arbitrary; just but partial and unfair; omniscient but ignorant of human yearning?
