Things Fall Apart By Solomon Northup
Solomon Northup executed his very gruesome and serious tone throughout his memoir by providing
dialogue said by real life people and using diction to give nauseating details to events going on around
him throughout his twelve years in bondage. For example, Solomon Northup explains in chapter five
how a fellow free slave named Arthur was abused for trying to protest the unfair kidnapping. Solomon
states, He fought until his strength failed him. Overpowered at last, he was gagged and bound with
ropes, and beaten, until he became insensible. (39). The slave masters were not compassionate and
defiantly enforced the depressing tone of the memoir. Solomon Northup explains how Eliza, a slave
mother, is being separated from her son and the cruel,

How Do Mothballs Or Ammonia Help In Spelling Squirrels
Do mothballs or ammonia help in repelling squirrels? Moth balls and ammonia are one of the most
common repellents that people use to get rid of nasty squirrels, but, unfortunately, they are not very
useful. There are several ways how to use these repellents and hope for the best results, although it
usually won t fix your problem with the rodents. Ammonia drives the squirrels mad because of their
developed sense of smell and can scared them away for some time. Also, it reminds them to the urine
of the predators and natural enemies. All you have to do is to wet some rags with ammonia and put
them in the area in which squirrels are living in. You have to do that in a proper manner and very
safely and at the same time effective. Make sure that

Stephanie Bennett Regional Theatre Analysis
What is the Role and Function of Theatre in a Regional City?
To me, regional theatre means home, something that is part of me and brings culture to where I live. I
have lived in 3 different cities in England, each of them being completely different. Personally, I
believe that theatre emphasises culture and difference in a regional city. Stephanie Bennett explains
The beauty of regional theatre is that the local performances are often raw and visceral in their
authenticity (2016), this stood out to me because I believe it states what regional theatre is about.
What does it mean to be a regional city?
Lyn Gardner Explains in her article In theatre is regional a dirty word? (2012) that regional cities go
beyond their distinctive tastes in food and how each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lyn Gardner talks on an experience in York when a cast of 180 people from the community marched
around York in honour of the soldiers in World War One. She goes on to explain Angels stopped the
traffic; people got up from their seats on buses so they could see what was going on; children played
around the edges as if it were the most natural thing in the world. People hurrying by suddenly
slowed, stopped and smiled. (2013) this is the real and true definition of regional theatre and the
power it has to make a whole community watch and feel the performance.
The word theatre has so much meaning behind it and its obvious to see that by just simply going to
two different theatres and comparing the two, each theatre has a different role and function. This
shows that there is so many different roles and functions with one regional city. There would be no
point in regional theatre if it just had one purpose throughout. That s what makes regional theatre so
unique and different to the rest.
Is there theatre that can only be performed in its regional

Lion King Psychology
When first looking over this assignment, my first thought was why is the The Lion King on this list?
Being one of my favorite Disney movies, I felt like I remembered most of the movie pretty well and
there were none of the concepts sticking out to me. After tracking the movie down to watch again, I
realized how wrong I was. There are so many psychology concepts in this movie and it truly was a
different perspective to watch it while watching for these concepts also. While explaining the concepts

I see all three happening in one particular scene. Simba is told specifically not to go to a certain area
of the land. When he goes against his father and is cornered by hyena s, Mufasa rushes in to save the
day. Simba has put himself, his friend Nala, and Mufasa at risk and Mufasa is furious with him. He
has his main man Zazu take Nala home so he can have a conversation with Simba. He starts out very
angry with Simba and raises his voice, telling him how much danger he put himself and other in. After
that, he calmly explains that even the bravest lions get scared sometimes. Once Simba understands the
lesson he is trying to teach, they play in the grass and seem to forget all about this. This using both
positive and negative reinforcement. Negative by yelling at him and telling him how disappointed he
is, and positive by turning it into something fun after Simba understands what he has

Social Norms In A Doll House
When we think of the word dollhouse we think of synonyms like innocence and playful. In Melanie
Martinez s music video she captures the opposite; in Dollhouse Martinez s demonstrates the
corruption social norms and gender roles can have on a family. Martinez shows us that anyone can be
affected by it, we just have to spot the signs before it gets out of hand. The first thing you notice in the
music video is a dollhouse. The dollhouse is a two story furnished home with rooms to accommodate
all the family members which consist of a father, mother, son and daughter. Already we can tell that
the family belongs in a high social class because of the look of the house but to reassure the audience
the director introduces the family wearing high class attire. The father wears a tailored black suit with
glasses and a tie, the mother is in a light pink suit with heels and a red derby hat on, the son wears a
button down white dress shirt with suspenders and black slacks while the girl wears a baby pink dress
and a bow. Not only does the choice of clothing reveal the social status of the family it reveals the
gender roles each member plays. The women are expected to wear the pink attire while the men are
expected to wear the business work attire. It is a social norm for them, which can also tie into the
family role each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the girl. This is a regular occurrence for them since the characters are not fazed by the work each
person is doing but what is concerning is the hidden actions each person does that the others do not
see. From this we can concluded the hidden deviance each family member

when him and his recently engaged wife got into a car accident. The first organ Tim donated was to

Tactical Revision Six Syntactic Devices
In lesson five we had to choose between three tactical revisions that created clear and concise
sentences and six syntactic devices that emphasize the right words. I chose the tactical revision to shift
peripheral ideas to the left. This tactic focus is to particularly avoid ending with metadiscourse. There
s a strong chance you have used metadiscourse in your writings without realizing. In simple terms,
metadiscourse are comments that mostly occur during your introduction and they contribute to your
ideas and announce your topic. However. we often mistakenly used them at the end of sentences,
when they are better suited to be at the beginning. For an example, let s use these easy to understand
terms beginning, middle and ending; if

Alice And Lucy s Suffrage In The 20th Century
What is the meaning of Suffrage? It is the term used to describe the right to vote as a legal and natural
born right. When people are without it, they work hard to eventually get it because they want to
become equal to others. Without having the ability to vote, one cannot have a say in what goes on
around them. The most powerful period for women and their fight for the right to vote was from 1890
to 1920. Women believed that if they had the same rights as men at that time that all their issues would
be solved. They had a lot of troubles and without being able to vote, they believed that they would
have difficulties of changing the future for themselves and their daughters. The women s situation in
the 1900s seemed unpromising. Everything ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nobody supported these women no matter how much they talked to the people in office or the people
of the public. They had to somehow make the government and the president, who was Woodrow
Wilson (Bob Gunton) at the time, change these regulations against women, giving them the right to
vote and discuss law just like men. As a result, a group of women gathered together to go out to
protest until their rights are granted. This caused several women to get unlawfully arrested. However,
the women found a way to protest while being incarcerated and eventually they were given the rights
they deserved by the president. Through the analyzation of the elements in a film, Alice and Lucy s
true passion and efforts were revealed through their continued devotion and perseverance, which
demonstrates that anyone can make difference and gain some control.
First off, the film s direction, staging and set displayed a great sense of the women s dedication to
making their movement happen. Although there are a few important and reoccurring characters, the
character that was mostly focused on was Alice Paul. The director and filmmakers made her character
seem bold and confident. In one scene, the women are holding a nonviolence protest in front of the
White House gate. The protested for many days. In some days there was rain, snow, heavy

Symphonic Wind Band Concert Report
On Friday, February 12, 2016 at 7:00 p.m., the Division of Music at Bob Jones University presented
the Symphonic Wind Band and performed five pieces. The performance in Stratton Hall at Bob Jones
University was a highlight of the European Travelogue, directed by Dan Turner. The program included
A Moorside Suite by Gustav Holst; Three Revolutionary Marches by Bedrich Smetana; Spring:
Overture for Wind Orchestra by Johan de Meij; Galop, from Genevieve de Brabant by Jacques
Offenbach; Ile de France from Suite Francaise by Darius Milhaud; and Danceries by Kenneth

The concert opened with A Moorside Suite from England; it began quietly accompanied by the
clarinet and saxophone. The tempo started out slowly, then shifted to fast and back again to slow,
throughout the entire piece. There was an appearance of a few soloists including the oboe, clarinet,
and saxophone. This movement ended with the entire orchestra leading to a final chorale that builds to
a fortissimo climax.

In 1789 the United States Constitution was developed by the founding fathers. This document was
developed to give a basis for governing people and providing rules to follow. As the world becomes a

Thesis Statement For The Attorney-Client Privilege
A. Historical Basis
The attorney client privilege is the oldest of the evidentiary privileges with a history that can be traced
to Roman and canon law. Official references to the rule first appear in English decisions as early as the
late Sixteenth Century. In accordance with the justification for professional privileges in general, the
attorney client privilege was thought to be essential to the establishment and preservation of a
relationship based on trust between attorney and client. This justification, however, fell out of favor by
the last quarter of the 18th century. The need to ascertain the truth for the ends of justice was more
urgent than the pledge of secrecy. Subsequently, a new justification was found to sustain this pledge.

The first of these characterizes the privilege as a tool of the powerful, a means of allowing the wealthy
to maintain a veil of secrecy around their activities so as to avoid loosening their stranglehold on
power and resources. The second describes the privilege as a way of enhancing the image of the legal
system. According to this view, by safeguarding certain communications between clients and
attorneys, the privilege prevents society from viewing courts as despotic juggernauts, and prevents the
emergence of information after the fact that might undermine the credibility of the factfinding process.
The last few decades have witnessed extensive debate over the proper scope of the privilege. Much of
this debate is really a debate over the appropriate reasons to have such a privilege at all, since the
differing rationales suggest different formulations of the rule. Courts and commentators do agree that
the privilege should be defined in such a way as to shield no more information than necessary from
the eye of the factfinder. After all, the device inevitably excludes potentially relevant information from
the consideration of the finder of fact, and thus has the potential to impair the functioning of

From April to June 2005, India s GDP grew at 8.1 per cent, compared with 7.6 per cent in the same

In the long run, that s not going to work without more open competition, creativity and
entrepreneurship. India s hidden strength is that the country is already extremely entrepreneurial but in
the informal sector. An Indian friend mentions that most of the cars we see on the roads, and many
computers in the offices, are assembled in small, informal factories, outside the law, to avoid the many
regulations and taxes that still curbs the Indian economy. Imagine what the Indians could do if all that
energy was legalized.
It is quicker to start a new business in China than in India. If India s labor laws are better than China s,
it s only because we re doing thing in socialism lite.
The Doing Business database ranks China a modest 91st on the overall ease of doing business, with
India worse but not dramatically so at 116th... in China it s quicker to start a business, get goods from
factory floor on board a container ship, and register property. But Indians perhaps surprisingly seem to
have more flexible labour laws and fewer hassles with licences.
In India, about 670 industries are completely reserved for very small companies, which means that the
economy lose the benefits of scale, don t get foreign investments and are unable to compete globally.

How Spiritualism Is A Form Of Worship
Spiritualism is a form of worship that believes in both a world of matter and material things, such as

where the other deities met. Basically, Mauna Kea was the Hawaiian Mount Olympus. James Kimo

Many were driven from their homes to reservations, or forced to bend a knee to the white man s ways.
One tribe, the Cherokee, was compelled to leave their lands in Oklahoma by the United States
Government. Compelled to march with the provisions and belongings they could carry upon their back
or horse, many died of exposure, starvation, or disease. (Trail) This event came to be known as The
Trail of Tears . These people were forced from their lands, homes, worship sites, and ancestral burial
grounds in the name of progress. Foreign progress, to them, if I may add. They, at their core, did not
care that Continental America was flourishing. They only wanted to be left alone in their ancestral
homeland. Now, in their eyes, they were being persecuted for their faith and culture. One group of
Sioux stood up against the tide of imperialism. They were victorious at the Battle of Little Bighorn,
but were defeated at the massacre of Wounded Knee. Wounded Knee was the final major conflict that
put the majority of the Native Americans in their place . The Sioux under Big Foot were ordered to
give up their fire arms. They responded with a reply, saying they had none. The medicine man began
to dance the Ghost Dance frantically, while wearing paint. The soldiers, fearing an outbreak of
violence was about to occur, opened fire. When the haze of smoke had cleared, the bodies of men,

Utopia Annotated Bibliography
Annotated Bibliography About Utopias and Dystopias
Anarchies, States, and Utopias. Gale Power Search. N.p., n.d. Web. 14 Apr. 2016.
The author of Anarchies, States, and Utopias compares the similarities and differences between
anarchies and utopias. Anarchies and utopias are similar in the way that they are both unrealistic.
Anarchy refers to the state of no government and everyone has absolute freedom of will. Utopias are
unrealistic because no place exists. Anarchies are different from utopias since anarchies resemble
dystopias. Utopian fiction has always had a bad reputation for being unrealistic and dangerous even
though authors should have received the recognition they deserve. Utopias are not given much
attention due to the fact ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There types are social, political, economical, ecological, religious, and scientific. Social utopias
followed the theory of social harmony. Social harmony is a theory of a perfect world. As the name
implies, ecological utopias are places where its inhabitants care about the environment. This type of
utopia arose during the Green Revolution and other green political movements. The rise in poverty
and the increasingly growing income gap between the rich and poor stimulated the idea of the
economical utopia. Religious utopias are divided into two concepts: inter religious and Era of Peace.
Inter religious refers to the idea that science is the basis of life. Superstition is null and void. On the
other hand, the Era of Peace is the simple idea where all religions merge to form one utopian and
universal religion. These types are the ideal political and social infrastructures. However, these types
are very unrealistic due to the current issues happening around the world. This encyclopedia page is
helpful in the way that the author introduces the different types of utopias. There are more than the

Theme Of Reputation In The Crucible
Reputation is extremely important in a town where social standing is tied to one s ability to follow
religious rules. Your good name is the only way you can get other people to do business with you or
even get a fair hearing. Of course, reputation meant nothing when a witchcraft accusation was staring
you in the face. But reputation is what made the Reverend hale begin to doubt whether the accused
individuals were actually guilty. And it was for the sake of his reputation and his friends reputations
that John Proctor refused to sign a false confession. He would, quite literally, rather die. Although
John Proctor goes to his death falsely condemned as a witch, he gains his reputation and respect
among those who matter, like his wife, because he refuses to falsely identify his friends and
neighbours as witches. The loss of Abigail s reputation toward the end of the play shows that
characters in The Crucible eventually earn the reputations they deserve, despite the personal tragedies
that might take place along the way. Having a good reputation is very important in The Crucible. It
means you can be accepted by society. If you do not have a good name, you will be completely
rejected. John Proctor would no longer be thought of a morally straight and righteous person.
Reverend Parris would lose all his respect and not be accepted by society. Judge Danforth would be
constantly questioned and lose his job. Keeping and maintaining your good name is an overwhelming

Masculinity In The Sun Also Rises
But man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated, Hemingway says. He used
his own insecurities, thoughts on masculinity, and life events to compose this novel. In the novel, Jake
was injured in the war just as Hemingway had been. Other men have also been changed by the effects
of the war. There is a feel of harassment, competition, rivalry, and arguments caused by the men s
challenged masculinity. Jake exemplifies insecurity in the novel as well as Brett. Hemingway models
The Sun Also Rises after his own insecurities, concepts of masculinity, and life events. When
Hemingway turned eighteen he attempted to enlist in the army, however, he was denied at first
because of his poor eyesight and became an ambulance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Couldn t we live together, Brett? Couldn t we just live together? Jake
I don t think so. I d just tromper you with everybody. Brett (Hemingway 21)
This dialogue explains that Brett can t live with Jake because of his inability to make love. She says
she will tromper him, meaning he will not be able to live with her sleeping with other men behind his
back. Ernest Hemingway was insecure about being a writer so he participated in bullfighting. Many
characters in the novel suffer with insecurities of their own. Robert Cohn has a vast amount of
insecurities. He is mostly insecure because Brett will not be in a relationship with him and she is the
love of his life. You can t get away from yourself by moving from one place to another, (Hemingway
6) Jake explains to Cohn. Cohn wants to move to South America because he is unhappy with his
lifestyle, however, Jake knows that Cohn s unhappiness isn t caused by where he is living, but how he
is living. Cohn s lifestyle will not change regardless of where he lives. I have never seen a man in civil
life as nervous as Robert Cohn nor as eager. I was enjoying it. It was lousy to enjoy it, but I felt lousy.
Cohn had a wonderful quality of bringing out the worst in anybody (Hemingway 51). Cohn s
insecurities bring out the worst in people. He makes others feel bad because he is feeling bad and
causes problems, but doesn t follow through in his

Martin Luther s Efforts To Reform The Church
Mannerism emerged as a result of social, scientific, religious, and political movements such as
the,Copernican Model, Sack of Rome, and the Protestant Reformation. The Copernican Model is the
astronomical model developed by Nicolaus Copernicus and published in 1543. It positioned the sun
near the center of the Universe, motionless, with Earth and other planets rotating around it in circular
paths modified by epicycles and at uniform speed. Religion had been in conflict with heliocentrism
because it was questioning religious statements. Martin Luther wanted Nicolaus to publish his theory
and prove how the Sun was indeed in the center rather than the earth. Nicolaus began his statement in
1506 and finished it in 1530 but did not publish it until ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Luther began his reformation by sending his 95 Theses to all christian churches. These theses were a
list of concerns with Church practices and doctrine. There were many ideas that Luther disagreed
with, one being indulgence. The sale of indulgences was a practice where the church acknowledged a
donation or other charitable work with a piece of paper (an indulgence), that certified that your soul
would enter heaven more quickly by reducing your time in purgatory. Pope Leo X, had granted
indulgences to raise money for the reconstruction of St. Peter s Basilica in Rome. Luther then turned
to the bible as the only reliable source. With the printing press invention and the help of translation,
meant it was possible for those who can read to learn the bible. Now, a direct relation with God was
available to almost anyone for an affordable price. When Luther and other reformers began to look at
the wording of the bible, they found themselves discovering that practices and teachings of the church
about how to achieve salvation did not match Christ s

A Comparison of God and Satan in Paradise Lost Essay
Comparison of God and Satan in Paradise Lost
In this essay I shall be focusing on the characters of G d and Satan from Paradise Lost by John Milton.
Within the essay I shall be attempting to elucidate on the themes of ambiguity of the two characters as
well as the uncertainty of moral integrity of each, characterized by John s Milton s use of sentence
structure, private thoughts and symbolism.
Foremost I would like to look at the way the way in which Milton characterizes the characters of
Satan in particular. Milton specifically presents different elements of Satan s character by his
interaction with those around him. For example it may seem ultimately that Satan (even by his very
name) is a creature of great evil. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But Satan takes this insistence even further:
Retire or taste my folly
We are told by Milton that the punishment for denying G d has devastating repercussions. Not only
does Satan show his obvious aversion to defiance, but G d shares this feeling:
Dwell in adamantine chains and penal fire .
However if Satan is powerful, then G d matches this endurance. He is described by Milton s
omniscient voice as being almighty and omnipotent these adjectives imply a great power, which
indeed can only be akin to a G d or creature of enormous epic strength. As a reader we may ask the
question during the conflict who is the stronger, and Milton produces a convincing argument that each
is powerful in their own right. G d is described by the characters around him, for example the angels
described G d as being:
Immutable, immortal, infinite,
Eternal king, thee author of all being...
The praise here is obvious and of great importance, and as a reader we must question the validity of
such claims. The age old religious arguments emerge, those being if G d is this powerful, why does he
create and allow evil. In Paradise Lost we

Opposition to Apartheid
The South African Apartheid, instituted in 1948 by the country s Afrikaner National Party, was
legalized segregation on the basis of race, and is a system comparable to the segregation of African
Americans in the United States. Non whites including blacks, Indians, and people of color in general
were prohibited from engaging in any activities specific to whites and prohibited from engaging in
interracial marriages, receiving higher education, and obtaining certain jobs. The National Party s
classification of race was loosely based on physical appearance and lineage. White individuals were
superficially defined as being obviously white on the basis of their habits, education and speech as
well as deportment and demeanor ; an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The quest for international support, mass mobilization, armed operations, and underground
organization became the basis for the ANC s Four Pillars of Struggle . On March 21st, 1960, the Pan
Africanists Congress, an anti Apartheid splinter organization formed in 1959, organized a protest to
the National Party s pass laws which required all citizens, as well as native Africans, to carry
identification papers on them at all times. Over five thousand individuals came to protest the cause in
Sharpeville. Unfortunately, police forces arrived and open fired on the protesters, killing ninety six in
what became known as the Sharpeville massacre. Beginning early in the 1970s and extending into the
80s, students, laborers and ordinary citizens became more involved in the struggle against Apartheid.
High school students began protesting the segregated system more vigorously, and many ended up
dead at the hands of National Party police forces in the June uprising of 1976. The late 70 s and 80 s
saw the rise in dissidence amongst ordinary South Africans towards the Apartheid laws. After the
student uprising of 1976, the ranks of MK were augmented considerably, leading to resurgence in anti
Apartheid activities and ushered in the first reforms to the Apartheid since its

  • 2. Things Fall Apart By Solomon Northup Solomon Northup executed his very gruesome and serious tone throughout his memoir by providing dialogue said by real life people and using diction to give nauseating details to events going on around him throughout his twelve years in bondage. For example, Solomon Northup explains in chapter five how a fellow free slave named Arthur was abused for trying to protest the unfair kidnapping. Solomon states, He fought until his strength failed him. Overpowered at last, he was gagged and bound with ropes, and beaten, until he became insensible. (39). The slave masters were not compassionate and defiantly enforced the depressing tone of the memoir. Moth balls and ammonia are one of the most common repellents that people use to get rid of nasty squirrels, but, unfortunately, they are not very useful. To me, regional theatre means home, something that is part of me and brings culture to where I live. I have lived in 3 different cities in England, each of them being completely different. Personally, I believe that theatre emphasises culture and difference in a regional city. Stephanie Bennett explains The beauty of regional theatre is that the local performances are often raw and visceral in their authenticity (2016), this stood out to me because I believe it states what regional theatre is about. People hurrying by suddenly slowed, stopped and smiled. (2013) this is the real and true definition of regional theatre and the power it has to make a whole community watch and feel the performance. The word theatre has so much meaning behind it and its obvious to see that by just simply going to two different theatres and comparing the two, each theatre has a different role and function. This shows that there is so many different roles and functions with one regional city. There would be no point in regional theatre if it just had one purpose throughout. In Melanie Martinez s music video she captures the opposite; in Dollhouse Martinez s demonstrates the corruption social norms and gender roles can have on a family. Martinez shows us that anyone can be affected by it, we just have to spot the signs before it gets out of hand. The first thing you notice in the music video is a dollhouse. The dollhouse is a two story furnished home with rooms to accommodate all the family members which consist of a father, mother, son and daughter. Already we can tell that the family belongs in a high social class because of the look of the house but to reassure the audience the director introduces the family wearing high class attire. The father wears a tailored black suit with glasses and a tie, the mother is in a light pink suit with heels and a red derby hat on, the son wears a button down white dress shirt with suspenders and black slacks while the girl wears a baby pink dress and a bow. When people are without it, they work hard to eventually get it because they want to become equal to others. Without having the ability to vote, one cannot have a say in what goes on around them. The most powerful period for women and their fight for the right to vote was from 1890 to 1920. Women believed that if they had the same rights as men at that time that all their issues would be solved. Historical Basis The attorney client privilege is the oldest of the evidentiary privileges with a history that can be traced to Roman and canon law. Official references to the rule first appear in English decisions as early as the late Sixteenth Century. In accordance with the justification for professional privileges in general, the attorney client privilege was thought to be essential to the establishment and preservation of a relationship based on trust between attorney and client. This justification, however, fell out of favor by the last quarter of the 18th century. The need to ascertain the truth for the ends of justice was more urgent than the pledge of secrecy. According to this view, by safeguarding certain communications between clients and attorneys, the privilege prevents society from viewing courts as despotic juggernauts, and prevents the emergence of information after the fact that might undermine the credibility of the factfinding process. The last few decades have witnessed extensive debate over the proper scope of the privilege. Much of this debate is really a debate over the appropriate reasons to have such a privilege at all, since the differing rationales suggest different formulations of the rule. Courts and commentators do agree that the privilege should be defined in such a way as to shield no more information than necessary from the eye of the factfinder. Anarchy refers to the state of no government and everyone has absolute freedom of will. Utopias are unrealistic because no place exists. Anarchies are different from utopias since anarchies resemble dystopias. Utopian fiction has always had a bad reputation for being unrealistic and dangerous even though authors should have received the recognition they deserve. Social utopias followed the theory of social harmony. Social harmony is a theory of a perfect world. As the name implies, ecological utopias are places where its inhabitants care about the environment. This type of utopia arose during the Green Revolution and other green political movements. The rise in poverty and the increasingly growing income gap between the rich and poor stimulated the idea of the economical utopia. Religious utopias are divided into two concepts: inter religious and Era of Peace. Inter religious refers to the idea that science is the basis of life. Superstition is null and void. On the other hand, the Era of Peace is the simple idea where all religions merge to form one utopian and universal religion. These types are the ideal political and social infrastructures. However, these types are very unrealistic due to the current issues happening around the world. This encyclopedia page is helpful in the way that the author introduces the different types of utopias. • 24. Theme Of Reputation In The Crucible Reputation is extremely important in a town where social standing is tied to one s ability to follow religious rules. Your good name is the only way you can get other people to do business with you or even get a fair hearing. Of course, reputation meant nothing when a witchcraft accusation was staring you in the face. But reputation is what made the Reverend hale begin to doubt whether the accused individuals were actually guilty. And it was for the sake of his reputation and his friends reputations that John Proctor refused to sign a false confession. He would, quite literally, rather die. Although John Proctor goes to his death falsely condemned as a witch, he gains his reputation and respect among those who matter, like his wife, because he refuses to falsely identify his friends and neighbours as witches. The loss of Abigail s reputation toward the end of the play shows that characters in The Crucible eventually earn the reputations they deserve, despite the personal tragedies that might take place along the way. Having a good reputation is very important in The Crucible. It means you can be accepted by society. If you do not have a good name, you will be completely rejected. John Proctor would no longer be thought of a morally straight and righteous person. Reverend Parris would lose all his respect and not be accepted by society. Judge Danforth would be constantly questioned and lose his job. Keeping and maintaining your good name is an overwhelming theme in The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 25. Masculinity In The Sun Also Rises But man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated, Hemingway says. He used his own insecurities, thoughts on masculinity, and life events to compose this novel. In the novel, Jake was injured in the war just as Hemingway had been. Other men have also been changed by the effects of the war. There is a feel of harassment, competition, rivalry, and arguments caused by the men s challenged masculinity. Jake exemplifies insecurity in the novel as well as Brett. Hemingway models The Sun Also Rises after his own insecurities, concepts of masculinity, and life events. Couldn t we live together, Brett? Couldn t we just live together? Jake I don t think so. I d just tromper you with everybody. Brett (Hemingway 21) This dialogue explains that Brett can t live with Jake because of his inability to make love. She says she will tromper him, meaning he will not be able to live with her sleeping with other men behind his back. Ernest Hemingway was insecure about being a writer so he participated in bullfighting. Many characters in the novel suffer with insecurities of their own. Robert Cohn has a vast amount of insecurities. He is mostly insecure because Brett will not be in a relationship with him and she is the love of his life. You can t get away from yourself by moving from one place to another, (Hemingway 6) Jake explains to Cohn. Cohn wants to move to South America because he is unhappy with his lifestyle, however, Jake knows that Cohn s unhappiness isn t caused by where he is living, but how he is living. Cohn s lifestyle will not change regardless of where he lives. I have never seen a man in civil life as nervous as Robert Cohn nor as eager. I was enjoying it. It was lousy to enjoy it, but I felt lousy. Cohn had a wonderful quality of bringing out the worst in anybody (Hemingway 51). Cohn s insecurities bring out the worst in people. • 29. Martin Luther s Efforts To Reform The Church Mannerism emerged as a result of social, scientific, religious, and political movements such as the,Copernican Model, Sack of Rome, and the Protestant Reformation. The Copernican Model is the astronomical model developed by Nicolaus Copernicus and published in 1543. It positioned the sun near the center of the Universe, motionless, with Earth and other planets rotating around it in circular paths modified by epicycles and at uniform speed. Religion had been in conflict with heliocentrism because it was questioning religious statements. Martin Luther wanted Nicolaus to publish his theory and prove how the Sun was indeed in the center rather than the earth. Nicolaus began his statement in 1506 and finished it in 1530 but did not publish it until ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Luther began his reformation by sending his 95 Theses to all christian churches. These theses were a list of concerns with Church practices and doctrine. There were many ideas that Luther disagreed with, one being indulgence. The sale of indulgences was a practice where the church acknowledged a donation or other charitable work with a piece of paper (an indulgence), that certified that your soul would enter heaven more quickly by reducing your time in purgatory. Pope Leo X, had granted indulgences to raise money for the reconstruction of St. Peter s Basilica in Rome. Luther then turned to the bible as the only reliable source. With the printing press invention and the help of translation, meant it was possible for those who can read to learn the bible. Now, a direct relation with God was available to almost anyone for an affordable price. When Luther and other reformers began to look at the wording of the bible, they found themselves discovering that practices and teachings of the church about how to achieve salvation did not match Christ s ... • 31. A Comparison of God and Satan in Paradise Lost Essay Comparison of God and Satan in Paradise Lost In this essay I shall be focusing on the characters of G d and Satan from Paradise Lost by John Milton. Within the essay I shall be attempting to elucidate on the themes of ambiguity of the two characters as well as the uncertainty of moral integrity of each, characterized by John s Milton s use of sentence structure, private thoughts and symbolism. Foremost I would like to look at the way the way in which Milton characterizes the characters of Satan in particular. Milton specifically presents different elements of Satan s character by his interaction with those around him. For example it may seem ultimately that Satan (even by his very name) is a creature of great evil. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But Satan takes this insistence even further: Retire or taste my folly We are told by Milton that the punishment for denying G d has devastating repercussions. Not only does Satan show his obvious aversion to defiance, but G d shares this feeling: Dwell in adamantine chains and penal fire . However if Satan is powerful, then G d matches this endurance. He is described by Milton s omniscient voice as being almighty and omnipotent these adjectives imply a great power, which indeed can only be akin to a G d or creature of enormous epic strength. As a reader we may ask the question during the conflict who is the stronger, and Milton produces a convincing argument that each is powerful in their own right. G d is described by the characters around him, for example the angels described G d as being: Immutable, immortal, infinite, Eternal king, thee author of all being... The praise here is obvious and of great importance, and as a reader we must question the validity of such claims. The age old religious arguments emerge, those being if G d is this powerful, why does he create and allow evil. In Paradise Lost we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Opposition to Apartheid The South African Apartheid, instituted in 1948 by the country s Afrikaner National Party, was legalized segregation on the basis of race, and is a system comparable to the segregation of African Americans in the United States. Non whites including blacks, Indians, and people of color in general were prohibited from engaging in any activities specific to whites and prohibited from engaging in interracial marriages, receiving higher education, and obtaining certain jobs. The National Party s classification of race was loosely based on physical appearance and lineage. White individuals were superficially defined as being obviously white on the basis of their habits, education and speech as well as deportment and demeanor ; an ... The quest for international support, mass mobilization, armed operations, and underground organization became the basis for the ANC s Four Pillars of Struggle . On March 21st, 1960, the Pan Africanists Congress, an anti Apartheid splinter organization formed in 1959, organized a protest to the National Party s pass laws which required all citizens, as well as native Africans, to carry identification papers on them at all times. Over five thousand individuals came to protest the cause in Sharpeville. Unfortunately, police forces arrived and open fired on the protesters, killing ninety six in what became known as the Sharpeville massacre. Beginning early in the 1970s and extending into the 80s, students, laborers and ordinary citizens became more involved in the struggle against Apartheid. High school students began protesting the segregated system more vigorously, and many ended up dead at the hands of National Party police forces in the June uprising of 1976. The late 70 s and 80 s saw the rise in dissidence amongst ordinary South Africans towards the Apartheid laws. After the student uprising of 1976, the ranks of MK were augmented considerably, leading to resurgence in anti Apartheid activities and ushered in the first reforms to the Apartheid since its ...
