2.2. RELATED WORK 2. 2.1. SECURE k NEAREST NEIGHBOR TECHNIQUES Retrieving the k
Nearest Neighbors to a given query (q) is one of the most fundamental problems in many application
domains such as similarity search, pattern recognition, and data mining. In the literature, many
techniques have been proposed to address the SkNN problem, which can be classified into two
categories based on whether the data are encrypted or not: centralized and distributed. Centralized
Methods: In the centralized methods, the data owner is assumed to outsource his/her database and
DBMS functionalities (e.g., kNN query) to an untrusted external service provider, which manages the
data on behalf of the data owner, where only the trusted users are allowed to query the ... Show more

In the past decade, a number of PPDM techniques have been proposed to facilitate users in performing
data mining tasks in privacy sensitive environments. Agrawal and Srikant [3], as well as Lindell and
Pinkas [63], were the first to introduce the notion of privacy preserving under data mining
applications. Existing PPDM techniques can be classified into two broad categories: data perturbation
and data distribution. Data Perturbation Methods: With these methods, values of individual data
records are perturbed by adding random noise in such a way that the distribution of the perturbed data
look very deferent from that of the actual data. After such a transformation, the perturbed data is sent
to the Miner to perform the desired data mining tasks. Agrawal and Srikant [3] proposed the first data
perturbation technique that could be used to build a decision tree classifier. A number of
randomization based methods were later proposed [6, 33, 34, 73, 104]. Data perturbation techniques
are not, however, applicable to semantically secure encrypted data. They also fail to produce accurate
data mining results due to the addition of statistical noises to the data. Data Distribution Methods:
These methods assume that the dataset is partitioned

What Is The Journey Of The Road Essay
After a short flight from Durban, we arrived in Port Elizabeth, where we were to start the drive
through the Garden Route to Cape Town, I once again reviewed our itinerary. The narratives I read
about the Garden Route from our itinerary and other travel brochures, made my nomadic heart beat
faster.
The Garden Route was incredible. It stretches for less than 300 km, yet the range of topography,
vegetation, wildlife is remarkable: indigenous temperature forest, pine plantations and fynbos (thick
bush), mountains running alongside rocky coves and beaches, gorges, rivers, lagoons and mountain
passes.
While tourism may have taken over much of the coast, and tree plantations for commercial use may
have taken their toll on the forest and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We stayed in Knysna for 3 nights and our hotel was nestled on the banks of a lagoon alright. While
relaxing in the hotel patio, I saw colorful birds and sea birds.
The following day, we ferried along the lagoon to the mouth of the open sea to Featherbed Nature
Reserve for an eco adventure tour. From the lagoon, I saw the Knysna Heads two enormous sandstone
cliffs that stand like sentries at the entrance to the Knysna Lagoon from the sea. While traveling by a
four wheel drive to the top of the hill, our local guide talked about the flora and fauna, and the Blue
Duiker, one of the smallest and most endangered of the antelope, found in the area. Even though I did
not see a Blue Duiker, I was not totally disappointed for when we reached the top of the hill we were
treated to a stunning view of the blue skies of South Africa reflected on the ever flowing waters of the
ocean. (picture)
I have always been fascinated by the power of water and its hold on the human heart and imagination.
So, I joined our local guide on a two kilometer hike through the milk wood forests and onto the
sandstone cliffs that feature arches, caves, cliffs and other wonders. It was absolutely amazing. Two
days later, we said goodbye to Knysna and continued to a scenic drive that took us along the
Outeniqua Pass, deep gorges and ravines, and misty mountains.
The scenery turned a little less dramatic and arid as we neared Oudtshoorn,

Social Innovation and Organisational Form
Drawing on your knowledge of social innovation and organizational form, compare and contrast two
organizational forms (e.g association and social movement; company limited by guarantee and coop;
hybrid and some pure form. Critically evaluate them with regard to their enabling or constraining
impact on social innovation. Draw liberally on the relevant literature and illustrate with examples.
Introduction Our societies are facing extraordinary challenges: increasing inequality, rising poverty

the current health care systems, the social welfare policy and food safety were not properly addressed
by Korean governments and business s. These named Cooperatives promoted participation with
stakeholders which led to a shared sense of community, a developed social efficacy, while
organisations formulate collaborative network structures and increase their financial stability.
REScoop Example: The multi stakeholder approach is also seen in REScoop, Renewable Energy

and external organizational structure. Collaboration with community organizations and NGOs enables
the cooperative to be constantly reminded of its original social aims, to engage in related social
activities and to influence public policy collectively through information sharing and lobbying. This
stakeholder involvement allows Wonju, Ansung and REScoop to keep in line with their mission of
going above and beyond to meet needs through social innovation. Hybrids However, as we

Abstract Of Artificial Intelligence
Abstract Artificial Intelligence otherwise known as AI, it is the development and the theory of some
computer systems which are able to undertake certain tasks which will normally need the intelligence
of humans. The tasks that are normally in need of the human intelligence are the likes of translation of
languages, making decisions recognition of speech among others. Good examples of these
technologies that fall under the AI are; augmented reality, Virtual Assistants, and robots. On the other
hand, employee productivity can also be called workforce productivity. Productivity is evaluated in
terms of the output of employees within a given time. A Lot of US multinational have embraced the
use of this technology as it has been touted as leading to some financial benefits(Bobrow,2005). My
research is limited to American multinational corporations like Amazon and Google. American
Multinational Corporations using AI Technology Many of tech companies and organization are putting
into use the AI technologies that are made up of the robots, augmented reality and even the virtual
assistants. Recently there was a report that was undertaken by Accenture in 12 nations and it showed
that AI that is able to sense the environment has the ability to know what is happening to lead to the
taking of an action. All these would, later on, lead to the rise in the levels of productivity to sales of
40% in the year 2035.The report goes on to show that once AI is well utilized, there will

Odd Stories In The Bible
Throughout the Bible there are several stories that may seem odd and morally difficult to understand.
Although these stories appear to be much they all have a purpose and are trying to tell us something.
God works in mysterious ways, and these, odd, stories are where he began. These purposeful stories
consist of; Abraham almost sacrificing Isaac, Dinah s rape, and the Potiphar s wife sexually harassing
Joseph. Firstly, Abraham was promised by God that he was going to bless his family and make great
nations out of his descendants (Gen. 12:1 3). God first told Abraham this when he was commanded by
God to leave all that he knew to go live in an unknown land. Then, because Abraham trusted God and
followed his command he was enlightened in the fact that God was going to bless him with as many
descendants as there were stars (Gen. 15:5 6). Although, Abraham had no children at the time he
trusted God. But his wife, Sarah, had little faith, so she told Abraham to lay with her servant, Hagar,
so that he may have a child to inherit his land. Ishmael is born to Abraham from Hagar, but that wasn t
Gods plan, and it didn t end up making Sarah happy. Therefore, God reminded Abraham that he will
have many descendants, as for me, this is my covenant with you: You shall ... Show more content on

land, in order for Isaac to be heir of Abrahams land. Once Isaac grew God decided to test Abrahams
trust in him. God asked Abraham to sacrifice Isaac to him has a burnt offering, and Abraham would
have done so if Gods angel wouldn t have stopped him (Gen. 22:1 18). Although Abraham didn t end
up actually sacrificing his only son, he would have because he knew that God knew what was best for
him. He had put his faith and trust in God for so long that he knew God had a plan and wouldn t allow

Jackie Robinson s Reactions To Walker In Baseball
When asked who broke the color line in baseball, most people would think of Jackie Robinson. An
advocate for civil rights as well as an outstanding baseball player, he became a significant figure in
American history, and is widely recognized as the first black baseball player in the Major Leagues.
However, a lesser known player named Moses Fleetwood Walker was a player in the Major Leagues
six decades before Robinson. Although faced with similar trials in each of their integration into the
white dominated sport, their attitudes were far from similar. Walker wasn t quite as likable as
Robinson and was not as exceptional in his playing. Walker s actions after baseball, including the

served in the army for two years, from 1942 1944, as a secondhand lieutenant. Robinson was arrested

army, he began playing baseball professionally in an all African American league for the Kansas City
Monarchs (Dorinson). Branch Rickey, president of the Brooklyn Dodgers, chose Robinson to begin to
integrate Major League Baseball. This became known as Rickey s Noble Experiment (Robinson). He
saw good character in Robinson, and knew he could get positive press and support from the African
American community. Robinson started by playing for the Montreal Royals in 1946, and Rickey
prepared Robinson for the trials he would soon face. Similar to Walker, reactions to him weren t
always positive. Some of his own teammates didn t want him to play, and crowds disliked him.

Analysis Of The Movie 12 Years A Essay
Twelve Years A Salve is a movie that is relevant to our class because it is one of the most recent films
to deal with the history of race and ethnicity in our country. 12 Years A Slave is also relevant as it
demonstrates the use of race and ethnicity in modern film and the questions that arise from it. This
film portrays the ugliness of slavery since a person born free from the first day of his or her life. The
reason for that is to show us how white people were using African American people in the past and
how the revolutions have changed all that over the years. The meaning of this movie is that African
American people should stand for themselves when they lose their freedoms, rather than waiting for
the white people to help them. Solomon is a very talented violinist and appreciated by many white rich
financiers. In his family, he also is a very happy man lives with his beautiful wife along with his two
kids. Solomon is a free man who is living in a small town where free African Americans interlace with
whites, and the African American Slaves treated very well from the white people in the south. In fact,
Solomon was able to provide anything for his family even some luxuries, but he not as a well of one.
Before Solomon kidnapped, he went to the store to purchase some items for his wife and his Children.
A slavery suffering started when Solomon introduced to two gentlemen by Mr. Moor, Merrill and
Abram. Solomon was presented as a talented and an expert

What Is The Development Of Heathcliff In Wuthering Heights
This summer we had to read the book Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. This paper will cover the
development in Heathcliff, how Catherine Earnshaw influenced other characters even though we didn
t meet her in the story, the symbolism shown in the novel, how Wuthering Heights fits into the
category of gothic fiction, as well as my own expert opinion of the story.
In the story Heathcliff is a pretty significant character. He is brought in by Mr. Earnshaw as an orphan
and is treated well by him. He then starts to fall in love with Mr. Earnshaw s daughter Catherine that
lasts the whole story. However, when Mr. Earnshaw dies, his son Hindley becomes in charge of the
house basically treats Heathcliff as a servant, he constantly looks down at him as if he is useless. So,
in the beginning of the story when Heathcliff is first introduced as a dirty orphan who is taken in by
Mr. Earnshaw who is instantly hated by Hindley because he feels his father loves Heathcliff more than
himself. This results in Hindley bullying Heathcliff as a child and when Mr. Earnshaw dies and he
becomes in charge to remember to flog him. At this point in the story and the first transformation of
Heathcliff he goes from being an orphan to being hated by Hindley and becoming his human punching
bag. The interesting thing about this is that Heathcliff just takes it he never really fights back or tell
Mr. Earnshaw he just gets up and goes about his business not even acknowledging that it happened.

An Analysis Of On Dumpster Diving By Lars Eighner
In the essay On Dumpster Diving by Lars Eighner, Eighner talks about materialism and wealth. He
explains his process of dumpster diving and the best places to go to dumpster dive. Eighner
incorporates tone, detail, irony, observation, and ethos throughout his essay. The tone of On Dumpster
Diving is straightforward. In the beginning of Eighner s essay, he goes straight into talking about
dumpster diving, and he does not beat around the bush. For example, in the beginning of his essay,
Eighner says, Long before I began Dumpster diving I was impressed with Dumpsters, enough so that I
wrote the Merriam Webster research service to discover what I could about the word Dumpster, (p 1).
Eighner describes dumpster diving as his profession. Eighner says, Eating safely from the Dumpsters
involves three principles: using the senses and common sense to evaluate the condition of the found
materials, knowing the Dumpsters of a given area and checking them regularly, and seeking always
the question Why was this discarded? (p 10). Throughout Eighner s essay, Eighner incorporates detail.
He explains how he hates to see food go to waste, which helps the reader understand that he is not a
materialistic person. Eighner says, I just hate to see food go to waste and so I eat much more than I
should (p 47). Eighner sees wealth as something many people take advantage of. For example, he
says, The student does not know that, and since it is Daddy s money, the student decides not to take
the chance, (p 26). When Eighner says this statement, he means that students will waste perfectly good
items, because it is not their money they are wasting. Students do not value money, and they do not
see throwing away good items a bad thing. Eighner also incorporates irony throughout his essay. He
says, Between us are the rat race millions who have confounded their selves with the objects they
grasp and who nightly scavenge the cable channels looking for they know not what. I am sorry for
them (p 79 80). Eighner s statement is ironic because he says he feels sorry for materialistic and
wealthy people when typically they are sorry for him. Eighner is in a healthy state of mind and he
feels sorry for the people who always feel

Apple Porter s Five Forces
Introduction nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp;To perform the Industry Analysis it is better to follow
Michael Porter s five forces model. This analysis framework was created so that it helps managers in
their task to analyze competitive forces to the company. (Hill amp; Jones 80) This model is only one
of the models that can be used for this task but it is one of the more popular models. The five forces
that we will have to look at for this model are (1) the risk of new and potential competitors; (2) the
bargaining power of suppliers; (3) the threat of substitute products; (4) the bargaining power of
buyers; and (5) the degree of rivalry among established companies within an industry. (Hill amp;

Since IBM became the more popular computer to start with, switching cost became much higher if
you wanted to switch to a Macintosh, an Apple operating system. All the software that you owned for
the IBM computer would be useless for an Apple computer. That means along with purchasing the
new computer itself you would also have to repurchase all the software that you had on the old
computer in the new Macintosh format. Also the two computers work slightly different, so you may
have to take a class or two to help you understand how to work this new computer that you purchased.
Overall that is much more money then it would be just to buy another computer compatible with the
same system that you already own. A third barrier to entry is one of imitation and absolute cost
advantages. This is were IBM has lost it s advantage. IBM has created a computer that is very open for
imitation. There are many different computers that are compatible to the IBM format. Each new
company that has entered the market has realized that IBM had the more popular system and then tried
to copy it. These new companies were producing very similar computers at the same cost but charging
less. (Hill amp; Jones 207) This in turn caused IBM to loose their

seller be sure that buyers will pay after the goods are exported and Hoe all transaction takes place?
The answer to these questions is the commercial banks. Commercial banks act as the intermediary
between buyer and seller. Parties involved felt the necessity of bankers because of their wide

Reflection Of Human Ethics
To start with, I must affirm you that throughout the course all the topics were essential to me and has
helped me improve my skill on human ethics. However, as it is suggested let me focus on the four
concepts that were very essential to me. First, ethics and values are very necessary in the human life
both personally and professionally. When serving my clients at work and contributing to communal
change, these were the first keys component for me to use in my daily activity, and also with my house
of values I succeeded to encourage the distinctive characteristics of human facilitiesin my community
because in doing this community service support the integrity and ethics of the incentive workers, help
clients and our community well being as well as increase our incentive payment. In my everyday
activity, ethics and values refer to the conduct of a professional and to the moral standards I embrace.

perspective and make change totally the sense of who I am as a human. On the other hand, it was
explained in the Aquinas lecture that a person is fully substantial from the union expressed by the term
I (Clarke, 2004, p. 29), and I am convincing that to be fully human I really to know who I am as
substance. Even through, being in a moment is what makes me an excellent human whose life is

Metal Death Trap Research Paper
Metal Death Traps How would you feel if someone told you whether you live, or die was
predetermined by a computer program? Self driving cars are becoming more of a reality every day and
the struggle of what it should do in an emergency has become a constant debate of ethics and morality.
English philosopher John Stuart, author of Utilitarianism, believes people should seek the greatest
good of their actions. Meanwhile, German philosopher Immanuel Kant, supports deontology (the idea
that the only true moral action is that which is made absent of any self desire and will not cause any
foreseen harm to another) in his book The Metaphysics of Morals. Although many people may believe
that it is in the best interest for cars to attempt to swerve ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some people may argue that the value a few lives supersedes the value of the one in the vehicle, but
that idea is denounced by the fact that one cannot determine what would happen if the car is to
swerve. The car could possibly crash in to a building injuring many more inside or cause a major
accident on the road where many more might die. As Mill puts it in his book According to the greatest
happiness principle as I have explained it, The ultimate end. . . ., for the sake of which all other things
are desirable (whether we are considering our own good or that of other people) is an existence as free
as possible from pain and as rich as possible in enjoyments (Mill). In short, the ideology of
utilitarianism means we should seek the least harm possible. This can only be done if we allow the car
to do what cars are designed to do and drive forward. The only true guarantee that can be made by
these vehicles is that the rider will be treated with the upmost care. Anything outside of this is an
uncontrollable variable that may cause more harm than

Militarism Against The Vietnam War
Songs often reflect or critique the ideologies of their time period. However, the songs are not bound to
the specific time period in which they are created because the ideologies they reflect or critique are
also not bound to a specific context. These residual ideologies are created in the past, but still acting as
an effective element of the present (Williams). The song Masters of War is a song that falls into this
category; in 1963, the song Masters of War was written by Bob Dylan as a response to the antiwar
movement against the Vietnam War, and in 2004, Pearl Jam applied the antiwar sentiment of the song
to the context of the war on terrorism. In both time periods, the dominant ideology of militarism that

The terror attacks on September 11, 2001, introduced a new form of enemy and in response, the
government invoked the residual ideology of militarism to combat this enemy instead of turning to an
emergent ideology, or a new, creative way of facing this new enemy. The Bush administration
declared the war on terrorism and in solidarity with those affected by the terror attacks, the public
supported the government s actions (Foner). However, the enemy of this war was loosely defined as
those who hate freedom and the board definition included all terrorist groups around the world that
poses a threat to the Western world and the freedom it represents (Foner). The first act of war under
the war on terrorism was when the Taliban, the terrorist group responsible for the tragedy on
September 11, refused to give up its leader Osama bin Laden and the United States responded with air
strikes (Foner). To the public, this military action against Afghanistan and the Taliban seemed justified
because the Taliban was the group responsible for the terror attacks. However, with the enemy so
ambiguously defined and without a clear agenda, the government was able to take free rein of the
direction of the war and possible self interest came into play. The government identified the axis of
evil as Iraq, Iran, and North Korea, and claimed that these three countries harbored weapons of mass
destruction, or nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, and planned to use these weapons on the
United States; this claim was not supported by evidence (Foner). As the United States went to war
with Iraq under this unjustified accusation, dissent rose around the world and many suspected that the
true intention was to fight for control over the world s second largest oil reserves in Iraq (Foner).
These antiwar protests around the world set the context for Pearl Jam s 2004 cover of Masters of War

Serbian Nationalism And Identity Of A Nation State s...
Perhaps one of the biggest points of contention in Serbia is nationalism and identity. Serbian
nationalism is especially unique due to its particular ethnic implications. It can be traced back to the
rise of nationalism in the Balkans during Ottoman rule. Serbia has existed between various empires
and nation states. Many Serbians voice the need for self autonomy, often citing being ruled by
outsiders for hundreds of years. Today Serbia seen by its people as an unfinished state. Thus, the need
for creating autonomous identity is especially relevant.1 Ristic in her essay on Serbian identity, that
the formation of a nation state s identity is crucial to its wellbeing. In general, identity is built upon
three essential interdependent elements: 1. birth, which creates ties to family, nation and to a concrete
geographical space; 2. culture, which forms individuals and groups spiritually and emotionally; 3.
acceptance of common values which help creating communities of values. Hence identity can be
determined on the basis of the following categories: place of living (town or district of town, country,
continent etc), religion, family, profession, nation, age class, ideology etc.2
The problem with Serbian national identity is that there is not enough security in the aforementioned
criterion historically. Ristic states that defining national identity upon values and ideology leads in
Serbia to two relatively opposite understandings of national identity and the values and norms

Related Literature Of Blindness
Chapter 2: Review of Related Literature
Blindness may be perceived differently among individuals. It can be a blessing or a curse. It may be
physical or psychological. It can be a metaphor to show the passion that is proportionate to the loss or
gain, happiness or misery, peace or war. When our judgment is clouded by too much passion or
excessive love, there is a tendency to be blinded to the limitless pitfalls (Bady, 2016). Blindness in a
figurative sense can be seen as a split between ignorance and concealment. Literarily, it can be seen in
the following phrases Blind ignorance (lacking knowledge), blind stupor (lacking awareness), blind
prejudice (lacking a critical or questioning attitude), blind taste test (tasting without looking), blind
presentation (lacking preparation or information) (Paterson, 2014). Blindness not only means the lack
of vision but also the lack of intellectual perception. In our everyday life it can cost a lot. It necessary
then to use our sight, insight and/or foresight to be able to safeguard our happiness and avoid
disagreements of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Agatha Christie Mousetrap Play Analysis
At the Kingwood Theater, The Agatha Christie Mousetrap open to audiences at the Lone Star College
Kingwood Visual Performing Arts Theatre in Kingwood October 20, 2016. This play has always did
good historically over the last 60 years in London. The first production of the play was in 1952,
London s West End. Under the direction of Playwright Agatha Christine, Eric C. Skiles the director,
directed a great cast of actors. Who brought out humorous and suspenseful moments through out the
production. They also kept everybody on their toes till towards the end. The main point of the play
was to find a deranged serial killer on the loose. All though there is a historical significance to this
particular play, I couldn t find one through my knowledge. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This production did have some theme music to it in the beginning before the lights cut on. The actors
would blare different types a music on stage but other than that it was pretty quite. Music would come
on at random times during the play. Sometimes the actors would play rock loudly or classical music.
The only sound that was consistently going on was actors talking. There was also sound when Mrs.
Boyle died by making loud stomping noises. The sound was still successful during the play because it
gave parts of the play life. There were a lot of great acting moments during this production I enjoyed. I
loved Detective Sergeant Trotter performance the most. He brought the most passion to his character
throughout the whole entire of play. Even though when we thought he was the most innocent person
during the play. Another character I liked was Mollie Ralston because her role was questionable at
times. Sometimes you wonder if she was innocent, guilty, or should be the next victim to die. The
funniest actor was Christopher Wren because of his hilarious moments. People in the audience would
laugh with he had a goofy line to say. The things I couldn t enjoy is a couple of actors who weren t
understandable. These characters were Giles Ralston and Mr. Paravicini because of their accents they
had to betray. If they could of spoke louder, the performances would of been better. One thing the
actors should of not done was turn their backs to audience. We couldn t see there face half of the

The Definition Of Piety In Plato s Euthyphro
In this essay I will discuss Plato s Euthyphro. I will discuss the dialogue that happens between the
characters in the text. In the text both characters struggle to come to an agreement as to what the
definition of piety is. I will give a few examples of the definitions Euthyphro offers Socrates. Socrates
rejected some of Euthyphro s definitions for piety. I will explain why Socrates rejected some of the
definitions. I will analyze Socrates understanding of morality based upon his conversation with
Euthyphro. I will decide whether or not his theory is subjective or objective. I will also determine
what the foundation of morality in his theory is.
The Euthyphro begins with Euthyphro and Socrates. There is a dialogue between the two of them. ...

Socrates ask what is the pious (Socrates 5). Euthyphro offers his first definition of piety. He basically
says that what he is doing is pious. It is pious to prosecute the wrong doers and it is impious not to.
Socrates rejects his definition by saying that the definition that Euthyphro offered is an example rather
than a definition. Euthyphro then offers his second definition of piety. Euthyphro then states What is
dear to the Gods is pious, what is not dear to the Gods is impious ( Euthyphro 6). Socrates rejects this
definition by basically saying that all the Gods won t approve of what is pious and impious. Euthyphro
offers the next definition which basically says that if all of the Gods think it is pious then it is pious
and all of Gods don t think it is pious then it is impious. Socrates rejects this idea by basically saying
that it can not be a definition because it still does not give an essence of what piety is. sEuthyphro
offers many more definitions of what piety could be. Socrates and Euthyphro can not come to an
agreement as to what the definition of piety is. In the end of the dialogue Euthyphro has an angrier
tone of voice. You can conclude that he was starting to get annoyed with Socrates constant questions.
He then tells Socrates that he is in a rush and he has to leave. The dialogue ends with no true

Sociological Speculation through Theory
A) Socialist feminism argues that both men and women may also believe that economic and emotional
dependence go hand in hand. Fearful of the loss of economic security, a husband s power over his wife
is absolute. An example of this characteristic from the socialist branch can be seen in my own personal
life. When I was growing up, I experienced how my father would completely disregard my mother and
her duties serving the household and the family, as she was a stay at home mom and my father worked
and got paid for his labor. Her domestic work was trivialized as my father felt that he was doing real
work. Because of this, my mother was quite submissive towards my father s behavior because she felt
that she needed him for financial security and that she could not be capable of anything without him.
B) Liberal feminists believe society does not have to be completely restructured to achieve
empowerment for women and to incorporate women into meaningful and equitable roles. An example
of this characteristic from the liberal branch is seen in the political system in the United States. It is
harder for women to advance in politics due to the fact that it is a realm that has been dominated by
men for a long period of time. In today s day and age, we see more female politicians coming to the
forefront, and are dissolving the notion that politics only involves men by showing that they too are
knowledgeable and interested in the political processes. This demonstrates liberal

Similarities Between Dreamland And The Giver

For example, Cheerleading is a sport, Rina said firmly. And besides, you get to go to all the good
parties (Dessen, 28). Rina always has a spring in her step, and looks for fun and excitement. Like
Rina, Asher s always funny and joyous. In addition, Jonas had casually picked up an apple... and

Inefficiency Of The Lottery Essay
Inefficiency of buying Lottery Tickets Have you ever seen those long lines near the lottery machine in
convenient stores, gas stations, or other lottery agents? If you have, then have you considered the total
amount of money that Americans spend on the lottery? In 2014, Americans have spent 70.15 billion
dollars on lottery tickets; this is almost four times the spending on Sports Tickets (Isidore). This
indicates that playing the lottery is an important source of leisure for Americans. However, this raises
an interesting question: is it economically efficient to buy lottery tickets? Are Americans receiving
benefits that are greater than the cost of buying a ticket? To answer this question, the concept of homo
economicus becomes essential. Homo economicus is a Latin word that denotes the economic man ; a
person who rationally makes decisions based on cost, value, and net benefits with the desire of
maximizing his happiness. To understand the economic man s perspective on playing the lottery, it
becomes essential to understand the net benefits and the costs of playing the lottery. After analyzing
these criteria, it becomes apparent that playing the lottery is economically inefficient, which is a
practice that the economic man would avoid, because the cost exceeds the benefits. First, it is essential
to analyze the incentive behind playing the lottery, and the probabilities of winning the lottery. When
an individual buys a lottery ticket, he has a desire to obtain more

learned from my mistakes. My introduction is amazing and really catches the reader s attention. For
example, The night I met her I knew she was special. I instantly fell in love with her. She had long,
wavy, brown hair that made her skin glow. My eyes met her bright, shiny, emerald green eyes, which

Background And Background Of Social Work Essay
1. Experience, background and/or relationships that have influenced your selection of social work as
your professional career (family, education, employment, diversity experience, volunteer
involvements, and personal characteristics, etc.). The past few years, I have had the opportunity to be
a part of many various non profit internships and AmeriCorps programs, that have opened my eyes to
underlying issues that we oversee. Most of the time talk about war, the economy, money and solutions
to fix the problems, but rarely do we come up with solutions to help foster youths, youths in poverty,
youths in inner cities and in title one schools. In Arizona, alone about 25.2% children alone live in
poverty with some type of family. When looking at statistics like that or working with my students in
title one schools, foster home and inner city schools, I don t see them as statistics, I just see them as
my students. But the funny thing is, we are very quick to judge. We judge how far they will go in
school and in life; based off location, family and school district. We rarely give these kids a chance in
general. Instead we place them in a box, a box in which they can t get out of, push them down the
prison pipeline, because let s be real, we know that s where they belong based off their actions. We
push them down the pipeline, and make them believe that that s their life path and no one or anyone
will or can change it. About two years ago, I did an internship in Providence, Rhode

The Ten Greatest Revivals Ever personally brought the power of prayer to an impactful reality through
the amazing revivals that have taken place. One of the key characteristics one notices is that a prayer
church started with a praying leader.9 As a leader in the church, I know I have personally become
complacent. Praying for revival, that the Lord takes my town by fire for His glory, without having the
real expectation that it could happen tomorrow or even within the next hour. The leader s who prayed
for and saw spiritual revival were praying with an expectation. Reading through the amazing accounts
has lit a fire inside of me with a real expectation. It starts with God using me as a leader to get others
to call on His name whole heartedly. What lit this fire inside of me to expect a revival? It was dwelling
on history of God s faithfulness to those who pray sincerely. I have personally purposed to not let a
month go by that I do not read and seek out a testimony to God s faithfulness to prayer. My objective
is to instill a passion for prayer upon Silver Valley Youth Group (SVYG). I need to have the same
objective with my ministry as I do for myself. I will be concentrating on the subject of prayer and God

Diction In Those Winter Sundays By Robert Hayden
In the poem Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden, the speaker is reflecting on his past with his
father, but mainly the Sunday mornings he experienced during his childhood. Throughout the poem,
there also happens to be a very dark and possibly even somber tone, which is shown by using several
different types of literary devices. Hayden utilizes strong imagery supported by diction and substantial
symbolism comprehensively. Furthermore, there are various examples of both alliteration and
assonances. The poem does not rhyme and its meter has little to no order. Although the father labors
diligently all day long, and he still manages to be a caring person in his son s life. The poem s main
conflict comes from the son not realizing how good his father actually was to him until he was much
older. When the speaker was a young boy, he regarded his father as a callous man due to his stern
attitude and apparent lack of proper affection towards him. Now that the son is older, he discovers that
even though his father did not express his love in words, he consistently did with his acts of kindness
and selflessness.
Hayden utilizes diction to set a dark and solemn tone throughout the poem. Like the various examples
of imagery, there is also a strong use of underlying symbolism. In the first stanza, the words cold (1. 2)
and fires blaze (1. 5) are used, which introduces a conflict. This is emphasized in the second stanza
when the word cold (2. 1) is used again, later followed by the word warm (2. 2). In the last stanza, the
father eventually had driven out the cold (3. 2). Yet the father had not ridden the house of the cold air
until the end of the poem, which symbolizes how it took his son several years later to recognize the
behaviors in which his father conveyed his love for him.
This arising tone of regret and distance is also formed by the speaker s depiction of his father having
cracked hands that ached, (1. 3) which further signifies the father s struggle with the severe coldness.
The concept of self sacrifice is apparent in this portrayal of his father s disregard to his own pain in
order to provide warmth and light for his family s home. The stirring of banked fires blaze (1. 5)
within the house,

Differences Of Cost Accounting And The Advantage Of...
Differences of Cost Accounting and the Advantage of Activity Based Accounting
Cost and management accounting is an integral element in preparation of an entity s financial reports.
Cost accounting consists of various branches, including; job and process costing, absorption costing,
traditional costing and activity based costing. An efficient costing system allows managers and other
users of financial reports to make decisions to better the company, in reducing and streamlining costs,
to improve overall profits. The way in which managers achieve this can be a rigorous and time
consuming task, however, if a costing system can be perfected, productivity and general cost reduction
can be achieved and an overall more efficient operation of the business will ensue. This essay will
critically discuss factors in which a business consider in deciding on a costing system to implement
and operate when establishing a costing system. In this article I will describe the different methods of
costing, explain why I believe activity based costing is the most efficient method, and provide a real
world example to support my claim.
A costing system, by definition: Costing system is that system in which we calculate different costs
with different methods and also monitor cost for reducing wastage and misuse of resources.

The Choices Made Effect The Future
After graduating high school, life actually begins. The choices made effect the future, a big choice to
make is whether to go into the military. The military force closest to civilians is the National Guard.
National Guardsmen and women get benefits that normal civilians don t, but the opposite is also true.
Differences between time, money, and education should be taken into account when deciding a future
in the National Guard. Humans only have so long to live, time wasted is time that cannot be

Civilians can achieve two Bachelor degrees, if money isn t a problem, in the eight years National
Guard members serve. Since civilians do not hold drills on weekends or go to mandatory meetings
they can hold a job because their schedule is more manageable (National Guard Members Struggle to
Keep Civilian Jobs). Family is less of an issue because civilians are not withheld by a contract to leave
the state by the federal government. All of the factors point that civilians are better equipped to save
time. Civilians might be better in the department of saving time but money is a different story. During
training, National Guard forces are paid as if they are in active duty (What will I get paid). Once the
training is over, the money declines for reserve members, but stays relatively constant for active
members. The pay is around two hundred to three hundred dollars for reserve members, and one
thousand five hundred dollars to two thousand dollars for active members per drill, one weekend a
month (What will I get paid). The pay of the National Guard might not be exciting, but the military
truly shines in the area of education. At a local college, such as Brigham Young University of Idaho, it
would cost around twenty one thousand dollars for schooling (GI Bill Comparison Tool). However,
the National Guard can pay for all of it if the member drills and

Why Do Big Data And Product Design Are All Important...
Introduction
Big data, defined as a popular term used to describe the exponential growth and availability of data
(What is Big Data? , n. d. ), has attracted considerable interest in many fields as it promises to offer a
level of analytic detail that has not been reached so far. Whilst it is often promoted as the solution to
many marketing problems, it has some significant disadvantages. Cost, data selection, problems
relating to the interpretation of the data and difficulties deciding how to apply the new knowledge to
existing products and product design are all important problems.
Situation There is a line chart above from Google Trends which illustrates the searching record (Big
Data) from 2005 to 2015.As can be seen, Big Data has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Probably, Big Data can be the future of marketing. However, there are some problems in using Big
Data because of these characteristics. If the enterprises do not know how to address problems, the
investment will be wasted while enterprises still search around in the haystack for the needle.
Therefore, some problems will be illustrated followed by the solutions for Big Data.
Problems
Firstly, the main problem is deciding which data should be selected. The data, explaining customers
desires and needs, is important to be collected while most of the enterprises are confusing about what
data they should concentrate on. A recent Gartner report (2014) stresses that 64% of firms raced to
plan or launch a Big Data project, though they did not have enough professional knowledge yet. To
understand what customers need through Big Data possibly turns into the core of companies target.
The large data volumes and different varieties of data lead to data complexity.
Secondly, the result predicted by Big Data probably may not be true at last. (MARCUS, DAVIS.
2014).This phenomenon happen frequently in many companies. Take Google Flu Trends as an
example, they predicted that the Disease Control and Protection Center was not able to control the
spread of flu quickly and effectively as time went on. Later, this conclusion was proved wrong. Hence,
it means that future prediction contains inconsistencies compared with reality.

How Did Louis Pasteur Contribute To The Germ Theory Of...
Louis Pasteur was a French chemist and microbiologist. He studied microbes and disease including
vaccinations and how to kill pathogens. He is most famous for the pasteurization process that quickly
kills most of the disease producing pathogens in dairy and wine. His most important work though was
probably in the development of vaccines for rabies and anthrax. At the time he was working people
still didn t understand where disease came from or how bacteria and viruses multiplied. Many people
believed in the theory of spontaneous generation, where microbes sprang from nothing to infect
wounds, food, or plants. Pasteur helped prove that disease was the result of microscopic organisms,
the germ theory of disease, and that life must spring from life.
Pasteur began working on the problem of bacterial contamination when a local wine merchant
approached him asking advice on how to keep his wine from souring. Pasteur s goal was to prove that
yeast, which produces lactic acid, caused the souring of both wine and milk. One experiment he did
was to prove that no fermentation of grape juice would happen if the grapes and the containers they
were kept in remained sterile through the experiment. He inserted ... Show more content on

  • 2. Nt1310 Unit 1 Literature Review 2.2. RELATED WORK 2. 2.1. SECURE k NEAREST NEIGHBOR TECHNIQUES Retrieving the k Nearest Neighbors to a given query (q) is one of the most fundamental problems in many application domains such as similarity search, pattern recognition, and data mining. In the literature, many techniques have been proposed to address the SkNN problem, which can be classified into two categories based on whether the data are encrypted or not: centralized and distributed. Centralized Methods: In the centralized methods, the data owner is assumed to outsource his/her database and DBMS functionalities (e.g., kNN query) to an untrusted external service provider, which manages the data on behalf of the data owner, where only the trusted users are allowed to query the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the past decade, a number of PPDM techniques have been proposed to facilitate users in performing data mining tasks in privacy sensitive environments. Agrawal and Srikant [3], as well as Lindell and Pinkas [63], were the first to introduce the notion of privacy preserving under data mining applications. Existing PPDM techniques can be classified into two broad categories: data perturbation and data distribution. Data Perturbation Methods: With these methods, values of individual data records are perturbed by adding random noise in such a way that the distribution of the perturbed data look very deferent from that of the actual data. After such a transformation, the perturbed data is sent to the Miner to perform the desired data mining tasks. Agrawal and Srikant [3] proposed the first data perturbation technique that could be used to build a decision tree classifier. A number of randomization based methods were later proposed [6, 33, 34, 73, 104]. Data perturbation techniques are not, however, applicable to semantically secure encrypted data. They also fail to produce accurate data mining results due to the addition of statistical noises to the data. Data Distribution Methods: These methods assume that the dataset is partitioned eitherhorizontallyorverticallyanddistributedacrossdifferentparties. The parties ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. What Is The Journey Of The Road Essay After a short flight from Durban, we arrived in Port Elizabeth, where we were to start the drive through the Garden Route to Cape Town, I once again reviewed our itinerary. The narratives I read about the Garden Route from our itinerary and other travel brochures, made my nomadic heart beat faster. The Garden Route was incredible. It stretches for less than 300 km, yet the range of topography, vegetation, wildlife is remarkable: indigenous temperature forest, pine plantations and fynbos (thick bush), mountains running alongside rocky coves and beaches, gorges, rivers, lagoons and mountain passes. While tourism may have taken over much of the coast, and tree plantations for commercial use may have taken their toll on the forest and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We stayed in Knysna for 3 nights and our hotel was nestled on the banks of a lagoon alright. While relaxing in the hotel patio, I saw colorful birds and sea birds. The following day, we ferried along the lagoon to the mouth of the open sea to Featherbed Nature Reserve for an eco adventure tour. From the lagoon, I saw the Knysna Heads two enormous sandstone cliffs that stand like sentries at the entrance to the Knysna Lagoon from the sea. While traveling by a four wheel drive to the top of the hill, our local guide talked about the flora and fauna, and the Blue Duiker, one of the smallest and most endangered of the antelope, found in the area. Even though I did not see a Blue Duiker, I was not totally disappointed for when we reached the top of the hill we were treated to a stunning view of the blue skies of South Africa reflected on the ever flowing waters of the ocean. (picture) I have always been fascinated by the power of water and its hold on the human heart and imagination. So, I joined our local guide on a two kilometer hike through the milk wood forests and onto the sandstone cliffs that feature arches, caves, cliffs and other wonders. It was absolutely amazing. Two days later, we said goodbye to Knysna and continued to a scenic drive that took us along the Outeniqua Pass, deep gorges and ravines, and misty mountains. Although these stories appear to be much they all have a purpose and are trying to tell us something. God works in mysterious ways, and these, odd, stories are where he began. These purposeful stories consist of; Abraham almost sacrificing Isaac, Dinah s rape, and the Potiphar s wife sexually harassing Joseph. Firstly, Abraham was promised by God that he was going to bless his family and make great nations out of his descendants (Gen. 12:1 3). God first told Abraham this when he was commanded by God to leave all that he knew to go live in an unknown land. Then, because Abraham trusted God and followed his command he was enlightened in the fact that God was going to bless him with as many descendants as there were stars (Gen. 15:5 6). Although, Abraham had no children at the time he trusted God. But his wife, Sarah, had little faith, so she told Abraham to lay with her servant, Hagar, so that he may have a child to inherit his land. Analysis Of The Movie 12 Years A Essay Twelve Years A Salve is a movie that is relevant to our class because it is one of the most recent films to deal with the history of race and ethnicity in our country. 12 Years A Slave is also relevant as it demonstrates the use of race and ethnicity in modern film and the questions that arise from it. This film portrays the ugliness of slavery since a person born free from the first day of his or her life. The reason for that is to show us how white people were using African American people in the past and how the revolutions have changed all that over the years. The meaning of this movie is that African American people should stand for themselves when they lose their freedoms, rather than waiting for the white people to help them. Solomon is a very talented violinist and appreciated by many white rich financiers. In his family, he also is a very happy man lives with his beautiful wife along with his two kids. This paper will cover the development in Heathcliff, how Catherine Earnshaw influenced other characters even though we didn t meet her in the story, the symbolism shown in the novel, how Wuthering Heights fits into the category of gothic fiction, as well as my own expert opinion of the story. In the story Heathcliff is a pretty significant character. He is brought in by Mr. Earnshaw as an orphan and is treated well by him. He then starts to fall in love with Mr. Earnshaw s daughter Catherine that lasts the whole story. However, when Mr. Earnshaw dies, his son Hindley becomes in charge of the house basically treats Heathcliff as a servant, he constantly looks down at him as if he is useless. So, in the beginning of the story when Heathcliff is first introduced as a dirty orphan who is taken in by Mr. Earnshaw who is instantly hated by Hindley because he feels his father loves Heathcliff more than himself. This results in Hindley bullying Heathcliff as a child and when Mr. Earnshaw dies and he becomes in charge to remember to flog him. At this point in the story and the first transformation of Heathcliff he goes from being an orphan to being hated by Hindley and becoming his human punching bag. The interesting thing about this is that Heathcliff just takes it he never really fights back or tell Mr. Earnshaw he just gets up and goes about his business not even acknowledging that it happened. ... • 12. An Analysis Of On Dumpster Diving By Lars Eighner In the essay On Dumpster Diving by Lars Eighner, Eighner talks about materialism and wealth. He explains his process of dumpster diving and the best places to go to dumpster dive. Eighner incorporates tone, detail, irony, observation, and ethos throughout his essay. The tone of On Dumpster Diving is straightforward. In the beginning of Eighner s essay, he goes straight into talking about dumpster diving, and he does not beat around the bush. For example, in the beginning of his essay, Eighner says, Long before I began Dumpster diving I was impressed with Dumpsters, enough so that I wrote the Merriam Webster research service to discover what I could about the word Dumpster, (p 1). Eighner describes dumpster diving as his profession. Eighner says, Eating safely from the Dumpsters involves three principles: using the senses and common sense to evaluate the condition of the found materials, knowing the Dumpsters of a given area and checking them regularly, and seeking always the question Why was this discarded? (p 10). Throughout Eighner s essay, Eighner incorporates detail. He explains how he hates to see food go to waste, which helps the reader understand that he is not a materialistic person. Eighner says, I just hate to see food go to waste and so I eat much more than I should (p 47). Eighner sees wealth as something many people take advantage of. For example, he says, The student does not know that, and since it is Daddy s money, the student decides not to take the chance, (p 26). When Eighner says this statement, he means that students will waste perfectly good items, because it is not their money they are wasting. Students do not value money, and they do not see throwing away good items a bad thing. Eighner also incorporates irony throughout his essay. He says, Between us are the rat race millions who have confounded their selves with the objects they grasp and who nightly scavenge the cable channels looking for they know not what. I am sorry for them (p 79 80). Eighner s statement is ironic because he says he feels sorry for materialistic and wealthy people when typically they are sorry for him. However, the enemy of this war was loosely defined as those who hate freedom and the board definition included all terrorist groups around the world that poses a threat to the Western world and the freedom it represents (Foner). The first act of war under the war on terrorism was when the Taliban, the terrorist group responsible for the tragedy on September 11, refused to give up its leader Osama bin Laden and the United States responded with air strikes (Foner). To the public, this military action against Afghanistan and the Taliban seemed justified because the Taliban was the group responsible for the terror attacks. However, with the enemy so ambiguously defined and without a clear agenda, the government was able to take free rein of the direction of the war and possible self interest came into play. The government identified the axis of evil as Iraq, Iran, and North Korea, and claimed that these three countries harbored weapons of mass destruction, or nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, and planned to use these weapons on the United States; this claim was not supported by evidence (Foner). Today Serbia seen by its people as an unfinished state. Thus, the need for creating autonomous identity is especially relevant.1 Ristic in her essay on Serbian identity, that the formation of a nation state s identity is crucial to its wellbeing. In general, identity is built upon three essential interdependent elements: 1. birth, which creates ties to family, nation and to a concrete geographical space; 2. culture, which forms individuals and groups spiritually and emotionally; 3. acceptance of common values which help creating communities of values. Hence identity can be determined on the basis of the following categories: place of living (town or district of town, country, continent etc), religion, family, profession, nation, age class, ideology etc.2 The problem with Serbian national identity is that there is not enough security in the aforementioned criterion historically. Euthyphro offers the next definition which basically says that if all of the Gods think it is pious then it is pious and all of Gods don t think it is pious then it is impious. Socrates rejects this idea by basically saying that it can not be a definition because it still does not give an essence of what piety is. sEuthyphro offers many more definitions of what piety could be. Socrates and Euthyphro can not come to an agreement as to what the definition of piety is. In the end of the dialogue Euthyphro has an angrier tone of voice. You can conclude that he was starting to get annoyed with Socrates constant questions. He then tells Socrates that he is in a rush and he has to leave. • 24. Sociological Speculation through Theory A) Socialist feminism argues that both men and women may also believe that economic and emotional dependence go hand in hand. Fearful of the loss of economic security, a husband s power over his wife is absolute. An example of this characteristic from the socialist branch can be seen in my own personal life. When I was growing up, I experienced how my father would completely disregard my mother and her duties serving the household and the family, as she was a stay at home mom and my father worked and got paid for his labor. Her domestic work was trivialized as my father felt that he was doing real work. Because of this, my mother was quite submissive towards my father s behavior because she felt that she needed him for financial security and that she could not be capable of anything without him. B) Liberal feminists believe society does not have to be completely restructured to achieve empowerment for women and to incorporate women into meaningful and equitable roles. An example of this characteristic from the liberal branch is seen in the political system in the United States. It is harder for women to advance in politics due to the fact that it is a realm that has been dominated by men for a long period of time. In today s day and age, we see more female politicians coming to the forefront, and are dissolving the notion that politics only involves men by showing that they too are knowledgeable and interested in the political processes. This demonstrates liberal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 26. Inefficiency Of The Lottery Essay Inefficiency of buying Lottery Tickets Have you ever seen those long lines near the lottery machine in convenient stores, gas stations, or other lottery agents? If you have, then have you considered the total amount of money that Americans spend on the lottery? In 2014, Americans have spent 70.15 billion dollars on lottery tickets; this is almost four times the spending on Sports Tickets (Isidore). This indicates that playing the lottery is an important source of leisure for Americans. However, this raises an interesting question: is it economically efficient to buy lottery tickets? Are Americans receiving benefits that are greater than the cost of buying a ticket? To answer this question, the concept of homo economicus becomes essential. Homo economicus is a Latin word that denotes the economic man ; a person who rationally makes decisions based on cost, value, and net benefits with the desire of maximizing his happiness. To understand the economic man s perspective on playing the lottery, it becomes essential to understand the net benefits and the costs of playing the lottery. After analyzing these criteria, it becomes apparent that playing the lottery is economically inefficient, which is a practice that the economic man would avoid, because the cost exceeds the benefits. First, it is essential to analyze the incentive behind playing the lottery, and the probabilities of winning the lottery. When an individual buys a lottery ticket, he has a desire to obtain more ... The first draft was terrible, but after I revised my paper I improved a lot and learned from my mistakes. My introduction is amazing and really catches the reader s attention. For example, The night I met her I knew she was special. I instantly fell in love with her. She had long, wavy, brown hair that made her skin glow. My eyes met her bright, shiny, emerald green eyes, which left me speechless. The beginning of that paragraph describes the person perfectly. • 32. Background And Background Of Social Work Essay 1. Experience, background and/or relationships that have influenced your selection of social work as your professional career (family, education, employment, diversity experience, volunteer involvements, and personal characteristics, etc.). The past few years, I have had the opportunity to be a part of many various non profit internships and AmeriCorps programs, that have opened my eyes to underlying issues that we oversee. Most of the time talk about war, the economy, money and solutions to fix the problems, but rarely do we come up with solutions to help foster youths, youths in poverty, youths in inner cities and in title one schools. In Arizona, alone about 25.2% children alone live in poverty with some type of family. When looking at statistics like that or working with my students in title one schools, foster home and inner city schools, I don t see them as statistics, I just see them as my students. But the funny thing is, we are very quick to judge. We judge how far they will go in school and in life; based off location, family and school district. We rarely give these kids a chance in general. Instead we place them in a box, a box in which they can t get out of, push them down the prison pipeline, because let s be real, we know that s where they belong based off their actions. We push them down the pipeline, and make them believe that that s their life path and no one or anyone will or can change it. About two years ago, I did an internship in Providence, Rhode ... • 35. Diction In Those Winter Sundays By Robert Hayden In the poem Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden, the speaker is reflecting on his past with his father, but mainly the Sunday mornings he experienced during his childhood. Throughout the poem, there also happens to be a very dark and possibly even somber tone, which is shown by using several different types of literary devices. Hayden utilizes strong imagery supported by diction and substantial symbolism comprehensively. Furthermore, there are various examples of both alliteration and assonances. The poem does not rhyme and its meter has little to no order. Although the father labors diligently all day long, and he still manages to be a caring person in his son s life. The poem s main conflict comes from the son not realizing how good his father actually was to him until he was much older. When the speaker was a young boy, he regarded his father as a callous man due to his stern attitude and apparent lack of proper affection towards him. Now that the son is older, he discovers that even though his father did not express his love in words, he consistently did with his acts of kindness and selflessness. Hayden utilizes diction to set a dark and solemn tone throughout the poem. Like the various examples of imagery, there is also a strong use of underlying symbolism. In the first stanza, the words cold (1. 2) and fires blaze (1. 5) are used, which introduces a conflict. This is emphasized in the second stanza when the word cold (2. 1) is used again, later followed by the word warm (2. 2). In the last stanza, the father eventually had driven out the cold (3. 2). Yet the father had not ridden the house of the cold air until the end of the poem, which symbolizes how it took his son several years later to recognize the behaviors in which his father conveyed his love for him. This arising tone of regret and distance is also formed by the speaker s depiction of his father having cracked hands that ached, (1. 3) which further signifies the father s struggle with the severe coldness. The concept of self sacrifice is apparent in this portrayal of his father s disregard to his own pain in order to provide warmth and light for his family s home. He studied microbes and disease including vaccinations and how to kill pathogens. He is most famous for the pasteurization process that quickly kills most of the disease producing pathogens in dairy and wine. His most important work though was probably in the development of vaccines for rabies and anthrax. At the time he was working people still didn t understand where disease came from or how bacteria and viruses multiplied. Many people believed in the theory of spontaneous generation, where microbes sprang from nothing to infect wounds, food, or plants. Pasteur helped prove that disease was the result of microscopic organisms, the germ theory of disease, and that life must spring from life. Pasteur began working on the problem of bacterial contamination when a local wine merchant approached him asking advice on how to keep his wine from souring. Pasteur s goal was to prove that yeast, which produces lactic acid, caused the souring of both wine and milk.
