Undiscovered Publics: Open Access and the (Digital) HumanitiesSpencer Keralis
This presentation focuses on how digital media has the potential to revolutionize both scholarly communication and research methods in the humanities. I suggest that humanities scholars collaborate with librarians, technologists, and new media practitioners to overcome resistance to open access within their disciplines and open up wider audiences for humanistic scholarship.
Effective Communications: Digital Literacy & Personal EtiquetteSpencer Keralis
Presented October 15 at the Second Annual s.t.e.p.s. Committee workshop, UNT College of Education and Succeed at UNT Initiative. Includes "14 Pro Tips for Online Etiquette."
Presented at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Annual Meeting 2014 at the Gaylord Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine Texas, by Spencer Keralis, Kris Helge, and Laura Waugh.
Abstract: The Open Access movement is transforming scholarly communication. Federal mandates for sharing the products of federally funded research drive scholars to rethink traditional scholarship models. The OA movement has been bedeviled by questions and misconceptions about intellectual property and copyright, peer review and quality control, predatory publications and other issues. This panel will address these concerns and help equip the AACP community with the resources to understand how Open Access can serve their scholarly endeavors.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

15. NoProNouns Exercise - 10 minutes
You’ll be divided into small discussion groups. Choose a close friend or family
member. Describe this person to your breakout group without using any pronouns.
Describe:
1. This person’s relationship to you.
2. This person’s interests.
3. How you feel about this person.
After each group member describes their person, discuss in your group how
omitting pronouns changed the way you speak. What do pronouns help us do?
18. Personal Pronouns
May be gendered pronouns, singular they, or
gender-neutral pronouns.
NOT “prefered pronouns” - either “my
pronouns” or “the pronouns I use”
Ask: What are your pronouns?
19. Caveat
The name or pronouns someone goes by do not necessarily indicate
anything about the person’s gender or other identities.
Names and pronouns tend to be publicly shared, because they are
part of the language commonly used to refer to people.
Identities tend to be private (i.e. many people don't proactively share
their gender just as many people don't proactively share their race,
class, or sexuality with acquaintances)
https://www.mypronouns.org/they-them
20. Singular “They”
Some people who are not comfortable/do not embrace he/she
use the pronoun “they/their” as a gender neutral singular
pronoun.
Grammatically it’s fine. Just use it.
Has a long history in the English language:
Þei in Middle English (1375)
Don’t second guess someone who discloses that they use
they/them pronouns.
21. Neopronouns
Alternate pronouns that are gender neutral and used by some
trans and nonbinary people.
Some examples:
● Bornstein: ze / hir / hir / hirs (1998)
● Spivak: E / Em / Eir / Eirs (1983)
Don’t second guess someone who discloses that they use
neopronouns.
22. Neopronouns
Finding the right pronouns
can be a moment of thrilling
self-recognition. It’s worth
doing the work to respect
folks who use neopronouns.
Maia Kobabe. Gender Queer: A
Memoir. Lion Forge, 2019.
23. Gender Neutral Honorifics
Mx. ‐ (typically pronounced mix) is a title (e.g. Mr., Ms., etc.)
that is gender neutral. It is often the option of choice for folks
who do not identify within the cisgender binary.
25. Sharing Pronouns
is a great way to disrupt the
normalization and privilege of
assumption.
https://www.mypronouns.org/sharing
26. Sharing and Asking
Sharing:
“I’m Spencer Keralis. I’m a
digital humanities librarian,
and I use they/them
pronouns.”
Asking:
“Hi, I’m Spencer. I use
they/them pronouns. How
should I refer to you?”
27. Do I Have to Share My Pronouns?
Generally speaking,
no person is under
any obligation to
disclose their
pronouns.
Exceptions:
1. You are facilitating a meeting or
workshop and want to model
inclusive practice.
2. You are going to ask someone
what their personal pronouns
are.
In both cases, please disclose your
pronouns.
29. Mistakes & Saves
You’re giving a phone reference for a volunteer.
You say: “She is a great worker. I’m sorry, I meant to say he is a
great worker. He’s been a real asset to our video cataloguing
project, and it’s been a pleasure to work with him.”
30. Mistakes & Saves 2
You are talking in a meeting about someone who goes by “they/them”
pronouns. You say: “His idea for that project is going to work very well.
Let’s try that.”
Later, after the meeting, you realize that you used the incorrect pronouns
for that person, so you go to them and say: “I’m really sorry I used the
wrong pronouns for you in that meeting earlier. I know you go by
‘they/them’ and I will make sure I get it right next time.”
You don’t have to linger on the topic if the other person doesn’t want to
talk about it further, you can simply work to do better.
31. Offering Correctives
You are talking with an acquaintance about a mutual work
friend, Amy. Amy has told you they only go by “they/them”
pronouns.
Your friend says: “Oh yeah, Amy gave me her book to borrow
last weekend.”
You might respond: “Oh? What book did they give you?”

32. Deadnaming and Misgendering
Deadnaming is the use of the
name assigned at birth for
someone who has expressed
their use of a different name
or who has changed their
name to reflect their gender
identity.
Misgendering is the use of
pronouns based on one’s
assumption of a person's gender;
or intentionally using pronouns
that reflect the gender assigned
at birth for someone who has
expressed their personal
pronouns.
(More on pronouns in a bit)
33. Microaggressions
City of Evanston Policy Prohibiting Sexual Harassment
Misgendering
Using gendered language
based on assumptions, or
using gendered language
that doesn’t match how a
person identifies.
Deadnaming
Use of name assigned at
birth for someone who uses
a different name.
Harassment
Repeated and deliberate misgendering or
dead-naming may be sufficiently severe or
pervasive to constitute harassment.
34. Gender Inclusive Language
Avoid: Instead, try...
“yes, sir” or “thank you, ma’am” Good morning!
Thank you very much.
Could I help the next guest?
Yes, please.
That guy over there The person in the red shirt.
The person with their hand raised.
