The peripheral nervous system consists of nerves and ganglia found outside the central nervous system. There are three types of nerves: sensory nerves carry impulses toward the central nervous system, motor nerves carry impulses away from the central nervous system to muscles, and mixed nerves contain both sensory and motor fibers.
