The Assembly Line and Mass Production Presentationerinlord
The assembly line and mass production transformed industry in the United States through increased efficiency, lower production costs, and higher profits. An assembly line divides the production process into sequential steps with different workers performing specialized tasks, allowing products like Ford's Model T to be mass produced. This innovation utilized unskilled labor, interchangeable parts, and mechanization to build custom products on a large scale, driving down costs and prices while increasing availability to consumers.
The document discusses manufacturing systems and lean manufacturing. It defines a manufacturing system as a collection of integrated equipment and human resources that perform processing and assembly operations on raw materials. It describes the typical input-transformation-output process. Examples of manufacturing systems include single station cells, machine clusters, and automated assembly lines. The key components of manufacturing systems are production machines, material handling systems, computer systems, and human resources. Lean manufacturing aims to eliminate waste from the manufacturing system, such as overproduction, waiting, inventory, transportation, and over-processing. It was pioneered by Toyota to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
This document defines a manufacturing system as a collection of integrated equipment and human resources that performs processing and assembly operations on raw materials. Key components include production machines, material handling systems, and computer control systems. Production machines are classified as manually operated, semi-automated, or fully automated. Material handling systems transport work units between stations in fixed or variable routing. Computer control systems communicate instructions, control machines and material handling, and manage operations. Manufacturing systems are classified based on their operations, layout, automation, and product variety.
Automated production lines use mechanized work transport systems to move parts between processing stations for high volume production. Synchronous transport systems move all work units simultaneously between stations in a discontinuous motion, positioning them at each station to be processed within a set cycle time. This type of transport is common for automated lines but not suitable for manual assembly lines due to time constraints potentially resulting in incomplete production and worker stress.
This document discusses various assembly methods used in industry including manual single-station assembly, manual assembly lines, and automated assembly systems. It also describes techniques for balancing assembly lines such as the largest candidate rule, Kilbridge and Wester's method, and the ranked positional weights method. The goal of line balancing is to arrange tasks so the time at each workstation is approximately equal to maximize efficiency.
This document summarizes the specifications of a manual insertion line. It notes that the line section is 1.5 meters long and can be combined into longer lengths. It uses a chain transmission driven by a frequency conversion motor for adjustable speed. It includes component boxes that conform to standards and a SMEMA plug for international communication connections. The line is designed to be durable, stable, and ergonomic for worker heights.

Reels or ammo packs of radial leaded components are loaded on the sequencer module, dispensed, and inserted in the PCB following the programmed sequence. Component dispensing heads remove components from the carrier tape and place them in component carrier clips located on the sequencer chain assembly. The sequencer chain assembly transports the components to the insertion area. While the components are on the sequencer chain assembly, the carrier tape is removed. The component transfer assembly transfers components from the sequencer chain assembly into the insertion head tooling. The insertion tooling guides the leads through the holes in the PC board. The cut and clinch unit cuts and then forms the leads, securing the component in the PC board.

Digital Banking in the Cloud: How Citizens Bank Unlocked Their MainframePrecisely
Inconsistent user experience and siloed data, high costs, and changing customer expectations – Citizens Bank was experiencing these challenges while it was attempting to deliver a superior digital banking experience for its clients. Its core banking applications run on the mainframe and Citizens was using legacy utilities to get the critical mainframe data to feed customer-facing channels, like call centers, web, and mobile. Ultimately, this led to higher operating costs (MIPS), delayed response times, and longer time to market.
Ever-changing customer expectations demand more modern digital experiences, and the bank needed to find a solution that could provide real-time data to its customer channels with low latency and operating costs. Join this session to learn how Citizens is leveraging Precisely to replicate mainframe data to its customer channels and deliver on their “modern digital bank” experiences.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
