The Role Of Political Machines In The Early 19th Century
Political machines were a very corrupt but necessary group during the 19th century into the early 20th.
They were a local political party organization that made it possible to get a large number of voters out
to get their candidate elected. Political machines were appealing to immigrants and other poor people
living in the cities as much as they were important to the politician they got elected.
There were 3 components to the political machines: the county committee, the ward or precinct
leaders and the party loyalists. The county committee members were those that held the top offices in
the county political party. People like Thomas J Pendergast from Kansas City, James Michael Curley
in Boston and Richard J Daley from Chicago. At this level they controlled the party s nominations, the
money and the votes. Much of their power came from the people that they got elected that owed them
favors for the votes.
The ward and precincts were where most of the action took place. A precinct is the smallest district for
electoral votes and a ward is how a city is divided. There were committeemen and captains at this
level. People working at this level very often were given government jobs for the work they did for the
party. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Part of the reason was the beginning of the progressive era. With the start of civil service merit to get
government jobs the ability to reward a worker with a good job went away and with that the power of
the political machine did too. Without the jobs to give, the workers went away. With the progressive
era came the beginning of social services and welfare so no longer were the political machines
necessary to provide for the residents in their ward. Another reason is that primary elections were
beginning to put a damper on the ability of the political machine to appoint the nominee they wanted
to run for

Analysis Of Schuman s Speech
The Schuman Declaration is the foundation of the European project that we live in today. In his
speech on 9 May, 1950, Robert Schuman proposed to pool France and Germany s Coal and Steel
production together for the greater purpose to create peace and safeguard Europe. For some it came as
a surprise because only five years passed since devastating World War II came to an end. Withal, it
gives room for interpretation and speculations. Therefore, this paper will analyse the real motivation
of Robert Schuman whether his intentions were primary to secure peace in Europe or whether, he had
something different and lower intentions in mind.
First a version of the Schuman Declaration must be decided on to continue the analysis further. To find
an appropriate version of the Schuman Declaration, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, it was interested in achieving world peace and to improve living conditions in Europe. Second, it
was aiming for the greater goal for itself to create the ECSC. Subsequently, France was driven by its
own interest to benefit from an economic partnership with Germany. Thus, the Schuman Declaration
provides enough credibility for the idea of the ECSC. Withal, the reader should not completely
discount the notion of peace keeping. It is likely, that France acted in its personal interest but saw

Indigenous People In Latin America
The last thirty years in Latin America has been marked by the struggle of the indigenous peoples from
the Andes to the Amazon, Indigenous people have emerged as important political actors calling
attention to the exclusions that continue to mark the democracies in which they live. Since the 1980s,
indigenous peoples have demanded their right to political participation, pressuring nation states to
broaden their understandings of the democracy. They ve demanded self determination and the freedom
to make their own decisions about their forms of government and lands. Used classic tools of
citizenship, media, non violent protests like Bolivia and more and more using ballot box. Evo Morales

industrial revolution which led Europe into prosperity but left the native peoples in a position of
strutualr inewuality that theyre still fighting tot overcome. Over the following centuries, the
benficiraires of the system, the Latin American elite, continue to exploit indigenous peoples but
through very different measures, different menas, legal systems that have made inequality seem
natural. Since the colonial era, Indians have been resisting oppression through outright rebellion as in
the age of insurrection 1791 when huge armies of Andean natives led by Tupac Amaru from Peru and
Tupac Katari from Bolivia almost overcoame the Spanish in Peru and Bolivia. In contemporary times,
remote lands of indigenous peoples are under new threats because of the natural resources they hold
precisely because these are the regions of refuge these are the areas that are under threat now. They
hold minerals, natural gas, they have rivers that might bear hydro electrc dams or forests to be logged.
In most places in Latin America, the state holds the subsoil rights and can grant concessions to
transnational corporations to exploit them without the permission of the owners of the land. Thus, one

Wystan Hugh Auden Research Paper
The English American poet, Wystan Hugh Auden, better known as W. H. Auden, was known for his
ability to craft poems in different styles centering his work on different moral, social, and political
issues. W.H. Auden is recognized for having some of the most renowned poetry of the 20th century
due to his ability to use ancient moral issues, and relate them to current events of the time. Even
though Auden had a talent for using his personal experiences to create poetry of love and suffering,
some of his most powerful poems are written upon the immortality of war. Focusing on totalitarian
dictators, Auden created two of his most moving poems, September 1, 1939 and The Shield of
Achilles . Auden uses his poetry to express the ways bureaucratic dictatorship is used to control
citizens, leading dictators to unleash war upon the world. Due to his knowledge of the potential
destructive tendencies of dictators, Auden uses his poetry to convey the message that the power of
enduring human spirit has the ability to counteract the harmful effects of dictatorship if civilians
suppress the power of the tyrant. Wystan Hugh Auden was born on February 21, 1907, in York,
England. Auden was raised in a strict and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Design Of Reliable And Effective Damage Detection Techniques
Problem Definition
Composite materials and structures are particularly attractive for aerospace applications due to their
high stiffness, high strength and low weight properties. The use of such structures allows for an
overall aircraft mass reduction, reduced fuel consumption and increased service life resulting in a
reduction in aircraft operating costs.
Early detection of damage within composite structures is of prime importance to safety and reliability.
When a void is present, internal stresses in the material are not distributed evenly, resulting in high
stress concentrations around the area where the damage has occurred. In general the presence of
defects results in poor structural performance, decreased load carrying ... Show more content on

Shape memory alloys, optical fibres, piezoelectric and magnetostrictive materials currently represent
the most suitable options for smart structural applications. Piezoelectric and magnetostrictive
materials have both sensing and actuation capabilities.
With the recent development of magnetostrictive material (Terfenol D) in particle form it is possible to
embed or surface bond a smart layer in composites structures without sacrificing their mechanical
properties while exploiting the larger strain as compared to the use of piezoelectric materials. [3][[4]
demonstrated the feasibility of sensing delaminations in composite laminates using embedded
magnetostrictive particle layers, [5] use a magnetostrictive patch to sense for multiple delaminations.
Configurations employed so far make use of external sensors and offline inspections. This paper
proposes a magnetostrictive sensor configuration for an online, structural integrity monitoring system.
Background
Magnetostriction
Magnetostriction is a property of ferromagnetic materials that exhibit a mechanical strain in response
to an applied external magnetic field. This effect is a reversible exchange of energy between the
mechanical and the magnetic form. Magnetostriction was first described in 1842 by James Joule after
he observed that a sample of

Aristotle Essay examples
Aristotle believes that happiness is the ultimate goal in life. You can t reach happiness unless you work
hard and become successful. That is where virtue comes into play. A human s function is to engage in
an activity of the soul which is in accordance with virtue and which is in conformity with reason (page
76, Palmer). The two kinds of virtue are intellectual and moral. Our virtues are what make us all
individual and all different. Intellectual virtues are what we are born with and what we learn. It is our
nature as humans and what we have inherited that makes desire to learn. As humans, we develop
wisdom to help guide us to a good life. With the intellectual virtue you develop two different kinds of
wisdom: practical and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We are born with faculties like we are with passions. We are not made up of good or bad nature; we
are not praised nor blamed (page 225, Mayfield). This quote is explaining with passions and faculties
are how we feel and desire which is neither right nor wrong, good or bad. Since passions and faculties
are not defined, state of character is virtue. State of character is our actions and our habits. The virtue
of man also will be the state of character which makes a man good and which makes him do his own
work well (page 225, Mayfield). In order to have true virtue you need to act to accordance with a
golden mean of moderation (page 78, Palmer). This means that you need to find an intermediate so
you will be praised and succeed. You can t take too much or too little. Too much for someone could be
too little for someone else, therefore each person needs to find their own individual mean.
For we may be said to desire all things as means to something else except indeed happiness, as
happiness is the end or perfect state (page 230, Mayfield). As Aristotle said that our ultimate goal is
happiness but in order to reach happiness you have to succeed. Relaxation then is not an end. We
enjoy it as a means to activity; but it seems that the happy life is a life of virtue, and such a life is
serious, it is not one of mere amusement. We speak of serious things too as better than things which
are ridiculous and amusing, and of the activity of

Why Do You Break The Prison Rules You Go To Prison
As Alcatraz s billboard says, You break the rules, you go to prison. You break the prison rules, you go
to Alcatraz. Alcatraz was the prison for gangsters, thieves, and trouble makers. This prison held the
baddest of the bad: Al Capone, Frank Morris, and the Anglin Brothers. Al Capone was known for
being a gangster, while Frank Morris and the Anglin Brothers were great at escaping and had one of
the best escape plans known to Alcatraz history. The brothers made a raft out of life jackets when they
tried to escape the prison. The cells were quite small and fairly plain. B and C block cells were forty
five square feet and each cell had a sink, a cot, and a toilet, there were 336 cells in the B and C block
alone. The D block had more spacious cells but the inmates had twenty four hour confinement. In the

Juan Manuel de Ayala found the island one and a half miles off of the West Coast in 1775. Juan named
this island La Isla de los Alcatraces which means Island of the Pelicans. Later, in the 1850s, President
Fillmore reserved the island for military use. Soon after that, 100 cannons were installed. This small
island was home to the first lighthouse on the West Coast and later it held military prisoners. They
made this island the home of Alcatraz because they knew nobody could swim to the shore and survive.
Guards at Alcatraz were very careful about keeping track of inmates. There was one guard for every
three prisoners and there were gun galleries at the end of every block of cells. There were twelve
inmate counts per day and the guards knew most of the inmates by name. Alcatraz closed after many
years of service due to the expenses of shipping food and supplies. The buildings were also starting to
crumble because of the salty sea air. In the end, the prison housed a total of 1,576

The Rehn-Meidner Economic Model
Question 1: Describe the Rehn Meidner economic model, its development and discuss its applicability
in the contemporary economic landscape.
Answer 1: The Rehn Meidner model was developed by the Swedish trade union confederation
(Landsorganisitionen i Sverige) economists Gösta Rehn and Rudolf Meidner and presented during a
LO congress in 1951. It is based on an active labor market policy, a solidarity wage policy and a
restrictive macroeconomic policy which combined should lead to a full employment, fair wages, price
stability and a high economic growth (Erixon, 2010: 677). Even though Sweden s economic was in a

began with the mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1995 and continued with the ISAF mission in
Afghanistan starting in 2003 and Libya in 2011 (NATO, 2015). Because of its EU membership
Sweden now shares the responsibility for the safety of the EU countries as it signed the solidarity

problematic situation in Europe it is possible Sweden has to react in order of solidarity and alliance.
Often Sweden s foreign policy is described as non alignment as they are not a member of the NATO or
other treaties but as seen before its EU membership can be seen as an alliance. Even though the self
image of Sweden is still dominated by the history of neutrality a public debate of a NATO
membership rose in the 2000s and had strong supporters. Because of its recent history of cooperation
Sweden could quickly integrate into the NATO as they have a small army with a high quality. As of
right now Sweden participate at their mission but has no decision power about

The Metamorphosis By Kafka
Kafka s The Metamorphosis, is the story of Gregor Samsa, a traveling salesman who is responsible for
the financial well being of his entire family, yet experiences an unfortunate metamorphosis into a giant
bug. However, while Gregor undergoes a disturbing physical transformation, the family dynamic
changes drastically as well. The family s treatment of Gregor slowly deteriorates from them regarding
him as the basis for their financial success and security to regarding him as no more than an
extraordinary nuisance that holds them back from a brighter future.
On the morning of Gregor s transformation, each family member noticed his absence and visited his
room to inquire about his tardiness in leaving for work. Gregor s employment was a vital aspect of
their existence, so when the chief clerk from Gregor s employer is sent to investigate the reason for
Gregor s missing the train, his entire family is quick to offer an excuse in his defense. At the sight of
the chief clerk, Gregor s mother blurts out, He s not feeling well (Kafka, Franz Kafka Metamorphosis
and Other Stories), and defends her son by claiming how his job is her son s primary concern. Once
Gregor s condition is discovered, events take a turn for the worse; the chief clerk flees, and his mother,
repulsed at the site of him, retreats, leaving his father to attack and drive him back into his room.

Lumbar Interval Disc Degeneration
The impact of smoking in lumbar interval disc degeneration and sciatica was also reported several
times. Battié et al. (1991) studied the impact of smoking in lumbar interval disc degeneration of
identical twins using magnetic resonance imaging. Results showed that the risk of lumbar interval disc
degeneration was 18% greater for smokers compared to non smokers. Non occupational lifting was
also studied as a risk factor for herniated lumbar intervertebral disc (Mundt et al. 1993). For this study,
287 patients with symptoms of herniated lumbar disc were involved and compared with control
subjects without back pain taking in consideration the age, sex, source of care and geographic area.

The first study published (Videman, et al., 1998) was involved monozygotic twins in Finns, with
alleles of the TaqI and FokI polymorphism being associated with reduced magnetic resonance imaging
signals of thoracic and lumbar discs. Another more recent study which confirmed the previous study
was based on 205 Japanese volunteers and patients between age 20 and 29 years. From this study was
found that Tt genotype of the TaqI polymorphism were more frequently associated with multilevel
disc disease, severe disc degeneration and disc herniation than the TT genotype (Kawaguchi et al.,
2002). In addition, influence of TaqI polymorphism to lumbar degenerative disc disease verified in
Chinese population (Cheung, et al., 2006). The fact that replication of TaqI polymorphism was
appeared in three different populations makes VDR as the most robust of genes associated with disc
degeneration disease. The reason for this is not clear but a possible explanation is based on the fact
that the polymorphism can affect the receptor level and function of vitamin D. Based on the fact that
vitamin D influence the sulphate metabolism which is important for sulphation of glycosaminoglycans
(GAGs) during proteoglycan synthesis, the latter can lead to changes in the structural characteristic of

Derasis Human Body
The skin is the largest outermost organ of the human body, contributing to 8% of the body s total
weight, with a surface area measuring around 1.8 square metres in adulthood (Feingold, 2007). As a
result of this, humans tend to be very conscious of, and very sensitive to, the way in which their skin
looks. Despite this, many of us often under appreciate the significance of human skin; we carry out
our daily routines without any realisation or consideration of just how important skin is in protecting
us from the external environment, informing us of our surroundings and making us aware of any
potential dangers (Nickoloff Naidu, 1994).

It is composed of highly vascular connective tissue (Stocum, 2006). The dermis contains a rich supply
of blood; these blood vessels dilate and contract in response to internal and external stimuli such as
anxiety and temperature (Bowers, Thompson, Miller, 1992). The dermis is therefore responsible for
regulating body temperature and blood pressure (Kemble Lamb, 1984). The blood from the dermis is
responsible for the nourishment of newly generated cells in the inner layer of the epidermis
(MacDonald, 2009). The function of the dermal connective tissue is to provide structural support for
the outer layer of the skin (Martini, Ober, Bartholomew, 1999). Sensory nerve fibres can also be found
in the dermis, which respond to touch, pain and temperature (Bryant Nix, 2012). This serves an
important role in human well being, allowing us to respond to dangers such as being burnt by a hot
object. The organisation of connective tissue permits the dermis to be flexible and contract with the
movement of the body (Starcher, 2005). This flexibility provides the body with a barrier to protect it
from friction and impact wounds (Hess, 2013). The thickness of the dermis varies across different

The Impact of Writing
Exactly how important is writing in today s society? Can we go through college without
writing skills? More important, how do writing skills will affect our lives professionally? When
we think of a writer, a novelist or a journalist come to our minds, although those are two of the
most popular career choices, there are many paths to a writing career. But how much does
learning how to write essays can help us develop different skills and how much does that affect
our relationship with others? Our history, all we know about the human kind, all living things,
our world and the universe, everything can be found in books or online. But none of this could be
accomplished without the use of writing.

Much of the research on writing and happiness deals with expressive writing or jotting
down what you think and how you feel, expressive writing has also been linked to improved
mood, well being, and reduced stress levels for those who do it regularly, says Adam Grant.
Writing your thoughts, feelings, concerns and plans for the future can help you relief stress, be
more organized and keep goals that can be accomplished in a near or far future. Keeping a
journal of your daily life can also help you become a better writer as you begin to develop much
fluent ideas and it becomes easier to put down in words your thoughts.
Writing is simultaneously a physical activity and a cognitive activity. Empirical research
overwhelmingly shows that we learn and synthesize new information and connections during the
actual act of writing, no matter how much we may think we already know what we want to say
when we actually sit down to write. Too often though we are taught, wrongly, that writing is
only a physical act, the mere transcription of ideas already hatched and thought through. Such a
mental model could not possibly be further from the cognitive truth. And this mistaken

Diabetes Is A Major Public Health Problem Worldwide Essay
Diabetes mellitus is a major public health problem worldwide. Its incidence is increasing rapidly, and
by 2030, this number is estimated to almost double.1 The increase in incidence in developing
countries follows the trend of urbanization and lifestyle changes. Individuals with T2DM are
considered on high priority as they are potential candidates for rapid evaluation to prevent and halt the
progression of complications. This study presented descriptive data from a large number of subjects
with diabetes type 2 attending the Diabetology OPD of our hospital. Obesity was prevalent in 65% of
the representative sample of type 2 diabetes patients. These results are comparable to other studies
done in India and abroad. Higher prevalence of overweight and obesity in diabetics with 58.1% of
subjects having high BMI was observed in Chennai. 10 Similarly in Gujarat, overweight and obesity
in diabetics was even more common observed in 83% of the diabetics. 11 Another study from South
Africa revealed 78% of obesity in diabetics. 12 Whereas obesity prevailed among 86% of diabetics
attending a hospital diabetic clinic in UK. 13 The higher prevalence of obesity in these subjects may
be due to various factors of which diet and sedentary lifestyle being most important. As far as overall
dietary status is concerned, 35% of the subjects were consuming excess calories. However in relation

The Effect Of Temperature Affect The Metabolic Rate Of...
I. Introduction
Temperature can greatly affect the metabolic rate of Carassius auratus auratus (goldfish). Carassius
auratus auratus(goldfish) are native to eastern Asia and was first discovered by the Chinese. Unlike
homoiotherm, Carassius auratus auratus(goldfish) are ectothermic, which means they adjust to their
surrounding temperature. In this lab, the dependent variable is the rate of breath per 15 seconds and
the independent variable is the temperature in Celsius. Since Carassius auratus auratus are ectothermic
then their metabolic rate must go up as the temperature increase and goes down when the temperature
decrease.
II. Method
The material needed to recreate this lab is one goldfish in a cup big enough for the fish to swim in, a
bowl filled with water, one cup of ice, and one thermometer. Place the cup with the goldfish into the
bowl filled with water. Measure the temperature of the water in the bowl with the thermometer to find
the room temperature and after when you added the ice to cool the water down. The room temperature
should be around 20 degrees Celsius. Wait for 3 minutes for the goldfish to adjust to the environment.
Count the number of breaths of the goldfish per 15 seconds by counting the number of times when the
gill cover open and close. Slowly added the ice to the bowl to cool down the water temperature.
Repeat the process for 20 degrees Celsius, 17.5 degrees Celsius and 10 degrees Celsius.
III. Result

An incision is made around the edge of the areola, down to the breast crease and then along the breast
crease itself (horizontally). Dr. Esmailian removes the excess skin and uses internal sutures to lift,

drooping breasts. In addition, this anchor incision technique is the preferred method when Dr.
Esmailian is performing a breast reduction and breast lift, simultaneously.
Crescent Lift To perform a crescent lift, Dr. Esmailian creates an incision that runs along the outer
edge of the upper portion of the areola. Typically, this incision is used when a woman has minimal
sagging. Moreover, this is the incision technique utilized when a woman is having a breast

Periareolar Lift A donut shaped incision is created along the edge of the areola. The skin that remains
is pulled inward and then reattached to the areola/nipple. This approach is ideal for women who have
mild/moderate sagging.

The Romantic Works Of John Keats, Percy Shelley, And...
The romantic period, lasting from the late 18th to the early 19th century, followed the Age of Reason.
During this time people had an individualized, free, liberal, and imaginative attitude towards life.
Literature itself was full of introspection, emotion, passion, sublimity, beauty, and spontaneity, with
subjects such as humankind, the soul, flowers, the common people and more. Of all of the Romantic
values and subjects, the beauty, creativity, and morals of nature is what truly inspired human
imagination, and thus literature of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. The underlying theme
of nature that is persistent through romantic poetry creates a bond between the poet and the common
man through short poems that express personal emotion that all can feel, as we all are connected to
nature. This can be seen through the works of John Keats, Percy Shelley, and William Blake. Percy
Shelley was a joyful and optimistic Romantic poet of the time who was concerned with the beauty and
passions of nature, creativity, and imagination. Nature is an ever present theme in his poetry as he
feels closely connected to nature s power. Ode to the West Wind is one of his most notable poems, and
one that truly exemplifies the idea of expressing personal emotion and feeling by using metaphors
from nature. He uses the west wind to symbolize the power of nature and the imagination that was
thus inspired by nature. It was almost even an agent for change. In the poem, the wild West wind

Symptoms And Treatment Of Asthma
Background
Asthma is a perpetual, or long lasting, illness that could potentially be life threating. In the United
States of America, about 25 million people are known to have asthma[nhlbi]. About 7 million of the
25 million diagnosed with asthma are children[nhlbi]. Asthma can be described as the inflammation,
obstruction and hyperresposiveness of the airway.
Asthma might be classified as acute, sub acute or chronic inflammation of the airway. In asthma, there
is a spastic contraction of the smooth muscle in the bronchioles[gyton]. The presence of this airway
obstruction causes edema and mucus secretion. When there is an increased sensitivity to irritating
stimuli, bronchoconstriction occurs leading to hyperplasia of smooth muscle, hyper secretion and dis
modeling of the epithelium.
Anatomy of the Lung
The lung is located in the chest as part of the respiratory system. The respiratory systems consists of
the trachea, bronchi, lung, mediastinum, pleura and diaphragm. The left lung has two lobes, upper and
lower with a cardiac notch(where the heart is sits). The right lung on the other hand has three lopes,
upper, middle and lower lobes. The lungs is covered by the chest wall which is made up of muscles
and ribs. The mediastinum is the separation between the lungs and the other organs. The diaphragm is
the located below the lungs. This is a very thin muscle that provides a division for the chest cavity
from the abdomen. The

Dopey Short Story
Dopey the teddy bear sat on the same wooden desk,in the same pink and gold room he had been in for
months, his fluffy blue legs situated in front of him,his owner not in sight he began to awaken
suddenly coming alive his arms began to gain feeling, as did his head and shoulders, and finally his
feet and toes. Dopey did not know what was happening, never had he ever been able to physically
move.Eerie of the feeling Dopey proceeded to get down off of the desk and walk around the cold
wooden floor he made his way out the door and commenced to walk down the hallway. While walking
dopey started to smell a very peculiar smell one of which smelt of sweets and sugars. Making his way
down to the kitchen he realized everything was bigger than him, cabinets stretched way above his head
and counters were a completely different world. Dopey plopped himself down the stairs and turned the
corner there sat an oblivious figure. A large brown and black mutt with drool dripping down it s body.
Dopey had a shock of fear, for he did not want to become the next chew toy in the creatures collection.
Dopey quickly but quietly walked backward and away from the creature. Proceeding to follow the
smell Dopey continued on the cold wooden floor. He made his way into a big room with a big green
bed and long white curtains.Grey carpet covered the floor and the smell of cleaning supplies filled the
air. Dopey peaked around the bed and found a stool right at the foot. He climbed up and walked on

Should Books Be Banned
Almost everything in our world is censored. Movies, TV, video games and even the music we listen
to. Most people know that books are banned from schools but, people seem to overlook the fact that
books have been banned in countries, especially the middle east.
Should books be rated using some type of appropriateness scale? Would such a system be an
inappropriate type of censorship? To properly answer this question we need to understand what
censorship is. Oxford Dictionaries defines censorship as The suppression or prohibition of any parts of
books, films, news, etc. that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security. (
). Basically all that means is to remove or otherwise alter sections of media that are considered
confirmatory to social norms. In my opinion books should not be rated on some sort of
appropriateness scale that is currently set up. This feels like an inappropriate form of censorship for a
form of media such as a book. One reason I believe this to be true is that not unlike in other forms of
media, the rating system would be one size fits all. This doesn t translate well into the world of books.
Books are so diverse and so ranging in ideas and mentality that a rating system for them would be
arbitrary. Everyone s mind develops at a different rate. Even when you are the same age your level of
maturity can be drastically different person to person. So a if a book is banned because, a select few
were offended by or otherwise

Summary Of The NovelThe Assault By Henry Mulisch
In the novel, The assault, Henry Mulisch s narrative style allows the readers to dig a lot deeper than to
just skim through the pages. By allowing the readers to put themselves inside the story, he brings out
in his novel the true meaning of what a human goes through and how they cope with tragedies from a
serious life event; in this case, a violent assault. By reading Mulisch s novel you get to see inside
Anton s miseries and see his life from a different perspective. Anton is constantly looking for
reassurance in his life for what happened to him in his violent childhood. The violence that had
happened to him has made him suppress his memories and he does not seek to find the true answers to
what had happened that horrible day. He tries to numb himself from his past and push through life to
try to live normally while trying to push past his feelings of his violence. While Anton struggles with
life and his suppressed memories, he faces several aspects of life throughout the time has helped him
stitch in the missing pieces of the violent occurrences of the assault. This brings himself one step
closer to coming to piece with all his memories each time he breaks down a piece of that distance that
he has formed between that life event and himself. This being said, Henry Mulisch shows the readers
how Anton eventually comes to terms with his suppressed memories of his violence from his past with
time.
The main aspect of the novel, The Assault, is the violence that has come upon Anton during his
childhood. The night of the murder of his family has been a heavy memory that has been sitting deep
inside his mind over the years. During the night of the assault, Anton mutters the words For I was born
with bad luck and I ll die with bad luck... (13) This passage is significant to the rest of the novel
because it gives an idea to the readers what kind of misery and misfortune Anton will encounter
throughout his life during each page of this novel. At first, Anton does not accept the violence that has
happened to him and is not willing to move on from his past. He does not want to face the memories
that have brought him such misery throughout his life. The memories of the violent assault are much
more painful to Anton

The Dalai Lama
The story of the Dalai Lama has been told and repeated innumerable times and usually leans toward
the personality, ideas and teachings of the current Dalai Lama who is the 14th incarnation named
Tenzin Gyatso. This paper, instead, revolves around the position and concept of the role of the Dalai
Lama. The conception of the Dalai Lama originated in Tibetan Buddhism and comes from a line of
learned preachers, known as tulkus, that are considered to be the incarnations of the Boddhisattva of
compassion, Avalokitesvara. This idea of reincarnation of a soul is uncommon in other forms and
schools of Buddhism which, accordingly, sets Tibetan Buddhism apart and establishes the foundation
upon which the Dalai Lama exists. I will be discussing the role of the Dalai Lama through the
exploration of Tibetan Buddhism and the previously mentioned terms Avalokitesvara, Boddhisattva,
tulkus and more. I will also consider the Dalai Lama s role as both a spiritual and secular head of the
Tibetan State.
The title of Boddhisattva is given to those who take the vow to become a fully enlightened buddha yet
stay in the samsaric cycle of rebirth out of sheer compassion to aid others in attaining nirvana.
Avalokitesvara is considered to have been one of the first to have made the vow to postpone their own
buddhahood until he has assisted every being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Yugoslavia Essay
One of the youngest nations of Europe, Yugoslavia was created after World War I as a homeland for
several different rival ethnic groups. The country was put together mostly from remnants of the
collapsed Ottoman Empire and Austria Hungary. Demands for self determination by Slovenes, Croats,
Serbs, and others were ignored. Yugoslavia thus became an uneasy association of peoples conditioned
by centuries of ethnic and religious hatreds. World War II aggravated these rivalries, but Communist
dictatorship after the war controlled them for 45 years. When the Communist system failed, the old

Spies Of The American Revolution
Ceci Carmichael Mr. Lewis A.P. US History Period 4 11/19/14 Spies of the American Revolution The
American Revolution and the Revolutionary War was the starting point of America s journey to
become an independent country. The revolution was an aggressive movement to finally be free of
Britain once and for all. There were a lot of components in a victory for the Americans: help from
foreign countries, strong unity, home field advantage, and spies. Yes, spies. The spies who were in the
American Revolution played a crucial role in many aspects of the war, including discovering acts of
treason, learning British battle plans, and discovering locations of different individuals and groups of
the enemy. Throughout the entire war, there were many individuals and groups that sent information
all around, mostly in the New York and New Jersey area. Perhaps the most well known spy is Nathan
Hale. After graduating from Yale at age 18, Nathan was given the rank of 1st Lieutenant when he
joined the Continental army. A few months later, he was promoted to captain and was given a
command of Rangers to secure New York City. On September 6, 1776, Hale enlisted to become a spy.
Hale is not remembered for being a spy, though. He imitated a school teacher, his previous job before
the war. Hale s mission was to collect intelligence behind enemy lines before the Battle of Harlem
Heights. He slipped behind enemy lines on Long Island and successfully gathered information about

The Populist Party And The Socialist Party
The Populist Party is often referred to as the party of and for the people, and is labeled as such because
it was, very candidly, founded by the common people, such as farmers and other laborers. While this
party was in power, they had many ambitions and ideas that they sought to spread to others, and
aspired to achieve. To understand the topic completely, one requires a general knowledge of the
formation of the populist party, the elemental beliefs, goals and ideals, and how the downfall of the
party came about, as this will aid in the understanding of the populist party s want of free coinage of
silver and how it would have helped debtors initially, but would have had a comprehensive and
unfavorable effect on the American economy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, almost all of the populist party could be put under one label: Debtors. The farmers involved
sought to regulate prices and make them affordable, while industrialists sought to regulate the hours in
a work day. The people were left in great debt and hoped that these actions may soon begin to lift the
economic depression that they were facing. The main idea of the populist party was to unite the
common and poor people so that they may gain power as a group, and allow the aforementioned group
to gain and retain more power and say within the operations and actions of the government. Although
the party began as a group of upset farmers, soon after the movement to create this party had begun, it
caught the attention of others. Some industrial workers, and a few stray others shared similar views as
these southern and western farmers, and decided that they would join the party, in hopes of also
gaining authority, and had hope to attempt to stop the declining economic condition. Although at first,
other political parties saw the populists as humorous, the party began to grow, causing more and more
people to be forced to recognize that the populists were gaining power, and should be taken seriously
(Edwards). It started in Kansas, when William Peffer became the first populist senate member, and
shortly after, the party began to grow. The party soon developed two different branches: Fusionists,

Myth Of Sisyphus Comparison Essay
Man s search for meaning and The Myth of Sisyphus both have similar storylines. Man s Search for
meaning written by Victor Frankl takes place during WWII in an Auschwitz concentration camp.
Where Frankl talks about finding purpose in his life, and finding some positivity to live on. Myth of
Sisyphus is written by Albert Camus talks about a man s search for meaning using the myth of
Sisyphus. Sisyphus was a man punished by the greek gods, and sent down to hell to push a boulder up
a hill everyday. The Boulder would always roll down so no matter what it was meaningless, and he
was subjected to do this everyday of his eternal life. Sisyphus and Frankl are both stuck in a kind of
Hell. Although Sisyphus s Hell seems like more of a chore than Frankl Hell where people are getting
sick, and dying everyday. In this point in their lives they have no purpose, but both search for that
purpose. Frankl searches for a reason to keep on living and find a positive view on life. While

Hagar Leaves The House Of Abraham And Hagar
Honors Humanities Essay #1
How does it feel like if two people you love ask you to choose between them? Well this is actually
from the Story of Abraham and Hagar. Abraham had a wife named Sarah. Sarah could not give him a
child, so she told him to sleep with her maid servant so that she can give Abraham a child for their
family. Hagar became pregnant and had Ishmel. A few years later, Sarah became pregnant and had
Isaac. Sarah was not happy about Hagar living with Abraham so she chases Hagar and Ishmael out.
Abraham prays to god to not let Hagar and Ishmael die, and Hagar and Ishmael get water. The
Abraham Casting Out Hagar and Ishmael by Johann Friedrich Overbeck and The Hagar Leaves the
House of Abraham by Peter Paul Rubens both exhibit the Biblical story of Hagar leaving Sarah and
Abraham. As displayed by the expression of Abraham and the women in both paintings, Overbeck s
painting suggests that Abraham is trying to compromise and comfort both women because of his two
kids, whereas Rubens painting suggests that Abraham is a little afraid and devastated of his wife Sarah
so he steps back. Rubens painting displays Abraham as a man who scared of his wife because Hagar
does not have her child yet, while in Overbeck s painting, Abraham is displayed as a guy who loves
his children.

Greek Gods and Goddess
The Greek Gods:
Ancient vs. Modern Views
According to ancient Greek mythology the Greek gods and goddesses had at one time lived the
savage, brutal and ugly life of humans. Eventually, however, they managed to rise above this ancient
fierceness to become the nineteen elder gods and goddesses the Greeks knew as The Titans, who ruled
the earth in a primordial era before the Olympian gods overthrew them. The ancient Greeks of the first
millennium before the Christian era believed that the ruler of the Titans was Cronus, who was rebelled
against and ultimately dethroned by his own son Zeus. When faced with the choice between who to
support, most of the Titan gods and goddesses decided to fight with Cronus against Zeus, and ... Show

The ancient Greeks firmly believed in the divinity and power of the Titans and Olympians. They
worshipped these gods and goddesses, feared them, implored them for help, and considered them
responsible for everything that happened on earth. Today, most of the people who are interested in
Greek mythology and in the gods and goddesses of Olympus consider their interest purely scholarly.
Other people who study Greek mythology do so for simple entertainment, or to satisfy their curiosity
about the Olympian gods and goddesses, who were certainly colorful, vibrant, and interesting figures.
The relationships of the gods and goddesses with one another, and their love affairs, disputes,
triumphs, and tragedies are fascinating to some of us today, for they were all related, and always
seemed to be intent upon some mischief or grand scheme that involved love, betrayal, or intrigue. In
fact, life on Mount Olympus reminds many modern students of Greek mythology as one big soap
opera, for despite their perceived divinity by the ancient Greeks, the gods and goddesses acted in very
human ways, and displayed human emotions, flaws, and weaknesses. These characteristics are what
scholars of today find so interesting about the Titans and Olympians, for the portraits of the gods and
goddesses of ancient Greece are in fact portraits of the ancient Greeks themselves. The society of the
gods and goddesses

Aiding In Racial Profiling
Racial profiling occurs when a police officer selectively focuses on a person s race where the harass,
detain, or arrest the individual (Cooper,2001). Racial profiling is a serious issue that has gone rampant
in the united states today; people being scared to do everyday activities because of their race is
terrorizing and they culprits should be look at as terrorist. The government system is not set up to
benefit the minorities, the iron triangle is a connection of groups that are placed to try and benefit the
people, but sometimes they only benefit themselves and people alike. Aiding in racial profiling is an
institutionalized form of terrorism and needs to be stopped at the source, and these are the steps we
should take. In the case of the Milwaukee Bucks basketball player John Henson who was just trying to
buy some jewelry he experienced racism. Henson was going to a jeweler to buy some merchandise
and wasn t allowed into the store because he store workers felt intimidated. Henson was a 6 11

The Effects Of Fear On Hiv And Hiv
Fear plays a big role in the way society treats or views patients who have been diagnosed as HIV
positive. Due to the lack of general knowledge regarding the illness and how it is transmitted, they are
led to believe a HIV positive person is extremely contagious, and can go on to infect anyone within
the general vicinity. As we now know, it has become apparent that HIV can only be transmitted
through certain activities that involve fluid transfer between an infected patient and someone who is
HIV negative. These activities include sexual intercourse, being born to an infected mother (during
pregnancy, birth or through being breast fed), being pricked by a contaminated needle (eg health care
workers), receiving blood transfusions from an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All other forms of transmission are at such low risk they are negligible, but still possible. [2]
Unfortunately, due to the nature of the possible methods of transmission, it has become easy for
society to associate this illness with shameful or immoral behaviours, such as homosexuality, drug use
and sex work. It is because of this behaviour associated with the illness that a lot of stigma and
discrimination arise, and due to the reluctance to talk about the issue, the fear of the disease because of
the misconceptions around the topic remains a big issue that if not resolved will continue to harm all
patients afflicted with this illness. The consequences of this disease on HIV+ patients is widespread
and does not only affect the persons health but consequently also affects almost all other aspects of
their lives, such as: their income, marriage/ family life, healthcare, their position in legal situations,
reputation and also goes on to cause depression and anxiety as they lose hope and feel less worth due
to the stigma they face. There are many sources of the aforementioned stigma that go on to directly
affect a patient in the above mentioned areas of their lives. To begin with, HIV+ patients are subject to
a lot of discrimination from the government as in many cases (in 60% of countries) there are various
laws and policies that hinder patients accessibility to medications and treatments, affecting everyone

The Key Term Of Continuous Improvement
Key Term
For this discussion board assignment I have chosen to further research the key term of continuous
improvement. My main reason for wanting to do further research into this topic is out of a general
curiosity and interest of mine as well as how it is relevant to my current job. Ever since learning about
the Toyota Production System (TPS) and lean manufacturing a year ago while taking another class at
Liberty University, I have been continuing to learn as much as I can about it. I think that lean
manufacturing is so interesting and has a lot of value for manufacturing as well as many other fields
and even in my daily life. Continuous improvement is a big part of lean manufacturing, so that is why
I chose to write about this topic.
Explanation of Key Term
According to Satterlee (2014), continuous improvement, which is sometimes referred to as Kaizen, is
a management technique that historically involves several incremental improvements to a process
rather than a single overpowering improvement or change (p. 253). Kaizen is a Japanese term for
continuous improvement that came out of TPS, which literally means good change , or improvement.
The big thing behind lean manufacturing and continuous improvement is the elimination of waste
through continuously improving processes. There are commonly seven main wastes consisting of
overproduction, over processing, excess inventory, defects, transportation, wasted motion, and waiting
time, with an eighth waste of unused

In his speech on 9 May, 1950, Robert Schuman proposed to pool France and Germany s Coal and Steel production together for the greater purpose to create peace and safeguard Europe. For some it came as a surprise because only five years passed since devastating World War II came to an end. Withal, it gives room for interpretation and speculations. Therefore, this paper will analyse the real motivation of Robert Schuman whether his intentions were primary to secure peace in Europe or whether, he had something different and lower intentions in mind. Over the following centuries, the benficiraires of the system, the Latin American elite, continue to exploit indigenous peoples but through very different measures, different menas, legal systems that have made inequality seem natural. Since the colonial era, Indians have been resisting oppression through outright rebellion as in the age of insurrection 1791 when huge armies of Andean natives led by Tupac Amaru from Peru and Tupac Katari from Bolivia almost overcoame the Spanish in Peru and Bolivia. Auden, was known for his ability to craft poems in different styles centering his work on different moral, social, and political issues. W.H. Auden is recognized for having some of the most renowned poetry of the 20th century due to his ability to use ancient moral issues, and relate them to current events of the time. Even though Auden had a talent for using his personal experiences to create poetry of love and suffering, some of his most powerful poems are written upon the immortality of war. Focusing on totalitarian dictators, Auden created two of his most moving poems, September 1, 1939 and The Shield of Achilles . Auden uses his poetry to express the ways bureaucratic dictatorship is used to control citizens, leading dictators to unleash war upon the world. Due to his knowledge of the potential destructive tendencies of dictators, Auden uses his poetry to convey the message that the power of enduring human spirit has the ability to counteract the harmful effects of dictatorship if civilians suppress the power of the tyrant. Design Of Reliable And Effective Damage Detection Techniques Problem Definition Composite materials and structures are particularly attractive for aerospace applications due to their high stiffness, high strength and low weight properties. The use of such structures allows for an overall aircraft mass reduction, reduced fuel consumption and increased service life resulting in a reduction in aircraft operating costs. Early detection of damage within composite structures is of prime importance to safety and reliability. When a void is present, internal stresses in the material are not distributed evenly, resulting in high stress concentrations around the area where the damage has occurred. That is where virtue comes into play. A human s function is to engage in an activity of the soul which is in accordance with virtue and which is in conformity with reason (page 76, Palmer). The two kinds of virtue are intellectual and moral. Our virtues are what make us all individual and all different. Intellectual virtues are what we are born with and what we learn. Since passions and faculties are not defined, state of character is virtue. State of character is our actions and our habits. The virtue of man also will be the state of character which makes a man good and which makes him do his own work well (page 225, Mayfield). In order to have true virtue you need to act to accordance with a golden mean of moderation (page 78, Palmer). This means that you need to find an intermediate so you will be praised and succeed. You can t take too much or too little. Too much for someone could be too little for someone else, therefore each person needs to find their own individual mean. For we may be said to desire all things as means to something else except indeed happiness, as happiness is the end or perfect state (page 230, Mayfield). Despite this, many of us often under appreciate the significance of human skin; we carry out our daily routines without any realisation or consideration of just how important skin is in protecting us from the external environment, informing us of our surroundings and making us aware of any potential dangers (Nickoloff Naidu, 1994). It is composed of highly vascular connective tissue (Stocum, 2006). The dermis contains a rich supply of blood; these blood vessels dilate and contract in response to internal and external stimuli such as anxiety and temperature (Bowers, Thompson, Miller, 1992). The dermis is therefore responsible for regulating body temperature and blood pressure (Kemble Lamb, 1984). The blood from the dermis is responsible for the nourishment of newly generated cells in the inner layer of the epidermis (MacDonald, 2009). The function of the dermal connective tissue is to provide structural support for the outer layer of the skin (Martini, Ober, Bartholomew, 1999). Sensory nerve fibres can also be found in the dermis, which respond to touch, pain and temperature (Bryant Nix, 2012). This serves an important role in human well being, allowing us to respond to dangers such as being burnt by a hot object. The organisation of connective tissue permits the dermis to be flexible and contract with the movement of the body (Starcher, 2005). This flexibility provides the body with a barrier to protect it from friction and impact wounds (Hess, 2013). The thickness of the dermis varies across different areas of the ... Carassius auratus auratus(goldfish) are native to eastern Asia and was first discovered by the Chinese. Unlike homoiotherm, Carassius auratus auratus(goldfish) are ectothermic, which means they adjust to their surrounding temperature. In this lab, the dependent variable is the rate of breath per 15 seconds and the independent variable is the temperature in Celsius. Since Carassius auratus auratus are ectothermic then their metabolic rate must go up as the temperature increase and goes down when the temperature decrease. II. Method The material needed to recreate this lab is one goldfish in a cup big enough for the fish to swim in, a bowl filled with water, one cup of ice, and one thermometer. Place the cup with the goldfish into the bowl filled with water. Measure the temperature of the water in the bowl with the thermometer to find the room temperature and after when you added the ice to cool the water down. The room temperature should be around 20 degrees Celsius. Wait for 3 minutes for the goldfish to adjust to the environment. • 23. Should Books Be Banned Almost everything in our world is censored. Movies, TV, video games and even the music we listen to. Most people know that books are banned from schools but, people seem to overlook the fact that books have been banned in countries, especially the middle east. Should books be rated using some type of appropriateness scale? Would such a system be an inappropriate type of censorship? To properly answer this question we need to understand what censorship is. Oxford Dictionaries defines censorship as The suppression or prohibition of any parts of books, films, news, etc. that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security. ( ). Basically all that means is to remove or otherwise alter sections of media that are considered confirmatory to social norms. In my opinion books should not be rated on some sort of appropriateness scale that is currently set up. This feels like an inappropriate form of censorship for a form of media such as a book. One reason I believe this to be true is that not unlike in other forms of media, the rating system would be one size fits all. This doesn t translate well into the world of books. Books are so diverse and so ranging in ideas and mentality that a rating system for them would be arbitrary. Everyone s mind develops at a different rate. • 24. Summary Of The NovelThe Assault By Henry Mulisch In the novel, The assault, Henry Mulisch s narrative style allows the readers to dig a lot deeper than to just skim through the pages. By allowing the readers to put themselves inside the story, he brings out in his novel the true meaning of what a human goes through and how they cope with tragedies from a serious life event; in this case, a violent assault. By reading Mulisch s novel you get to see inside Anton s miseries and see his life from a different perspective. Anton is constantly looking for reassurance in his life for what happened to him in his violent childhood. The violence that had happened to him has made him suppress his memories and he does not seek to find the true answers to what had happened that horrible day. He tries to numb himself from his past and push through life to try to live normally while trying to push past his feelings of his violence. While Anton struggles with life and his suppressed memories, he faces several aspects of life throughout the time has helped him stitch in the missing pieces of the violent occurrences of the assault. This brings himself one step closer to coming to piece with all his memories each time he breaks down a piece of that distance that he has formed between that life event and himself. This being said, Henry Mulisch shows the readers how Anton eventually comes to terms with his suppressed memories of his violence from his past with time. The main aspect of the novel, The Assault, is the violence that has come upon Anton during his childhood. The night of the murder of his family has been a heavy memory that has been sitting deep inside his mind over the years. During the night of the assault, Anton mutters the words For I was born with bad luck and I ll die with bad luck... (13) This passage is significant to the rest of the novel because it gives an idea to the readers what kind of misery and misfortune Anton will encounter throughout his life during each page of this novel. At first, Anton does not accept the violence that has happened to him and is not willing to move on from his past. He does not want to face the memories that have brought him such misery throughout his life. The memories of the violent assault are much more painful to Anton ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 25. The Dalai Lama The story of the Dalai Lama has been told and repeated innumerable times and usually leans toward the personality, ideas and teachings of the current Dalai Lama who is the 14th incarnation named Tenzin Gyatso. This paper, instead, revolves around the position and concept of the role of the Dalai Lama. The conception of the Dalai Lama originated in Tibetan Buddhism and comes from a line of learned preachers, known as tulkus, that are considered to be the incarnations of the Boddhisattva of compassion, Avalokitesvara. This idea of reincarnation of a soul is uncommon in other forms and schools of Buddhism which, accordingly, sets Tibetan Buddhism apart and establishes the foundation upon which the Dalai Lama exists. I will be discussing the role of the Dalai Lama through the exploration of Tibetan Buddhism and the previously mentioned terms Avalokitesvara, Boddhisattva, tulkus and more. I will also consider the Dalai Lama s role as both a spiritual and secular head of the Tibetan State. The title of Boddhisattva is given to those who take the vow to become a fully enlightened buddha yet stay in the samsaric cycle of rebirth out of sheer compassion to aid others in attaining nirvana. Avalokitesvara is considered to have been one of the first to have made the vow to postpone their own buddhahood until he has assisted every being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The country was put together mostly from remnants of the collapsed Ottoman Empire and Austria Hungary. Demands for self determination by Slovenes, Croats, Serbs, and others were ignored. US History Period 4 11/19/14 Spies of the American Revolution The American Revolution and the Revolutionary War was the starting point of America s journey to become an independent country. The revolution was an aggressive movement to finally be free of Britain once and for all. There were a lot of components in a victory for the Americans: help from foreign countries, strong unity, home field advantage, and spies. Yes, spies. The spies who were in the American Revolution played a crucial role in many aspects of the war, including discovering acts of treason, learning British battle plans, and discovering locations of different individuals and groups of the enemy. Throughout the entire war, there were many individuals and groups that sent information all around, mostly in the New York and New Jersey area. Perhaps the most well known spy is Nathan Hale. After graduating from Yale at age 18, Nathan was given the rank of 1st Lieutenant when he joined the Continental army. A few months later, he was promoted to captain and was given a command of Rangers to secure New York City. On September 6, 1776, Hale enlisted to become a spy. • 28. The Populist Party And The Socialist Party The Populist Party is often referred to as the party of and for the people, and is labeled as such because it was, very candidly, founded by the common people, such as farmers and other laborers. While this party was in power, they had many ambitions and ideas that they sought to spread to others, and aspired to achieve. To understand the topic completely, one requires a general knowledge of the formation of the populist party, the elemental beliefs, goals and ideals, and how the downfall of the party came about, as this will aid in the understanding of the populist party s want of free coinage of silver and how it would have helped debtors initially, but would have had a comprehensive and unfavorable effect on the American economy ... The farmers involved sought to regulate prices and make them affordable, while industrialists sought to regulate the hours in a work day. The people were left in great debt and hoped that these actions may soon begin to lift the economic depression that they were facing. The main idea of the populist party was to unite the common and poor people so that they may gain power as a group, and allow the aforementioned group to gain and retain more power and say within the operations and actions of the government. Although the party began as a group of upset farmers, soon after the movement to create this party had begun, it caught the attention of others. Some industrial workers, and a few stray others shared similar views as these southern and western farmers, and decided that they would join the party, in hopes of also gaining authority, and had hope to attempt to stop the declining economic condition. Although at first, other political parties saw the populists as humorous, the party began to grow, causing more and more people to be forced to recognize that the populists were gaining power, and should be taken seriously (Edwards). It started in Kansas, when William Peffer became the first populist senate member, and shortly after, the party began to grow. The party soon developed two different branches: Fusionists, ... Other people who study Greek mythology do so for simple entertainment, or to satisfy their curiosity about the Olympian gods and goddesses, who were certainly colorful, vibrant, and interesting figures. The relationships of the gods and goddesses with one another, and their love affairs, disputes, triumphs, and tragedies are fascinating to some of us today, for they were all related, and always seemed to be intent upon some mischief or grand scheme that involved love, betrayal, or intrigue. In fact, life on Mount Olympus reminds many modern students of Greek mythology as one big soap opera, for despite their perceived divinity by the ancient Greeks, the gods and goddesses acted in very human ways, and displayed human emotions, flaws, and weaknesses. Ever since learning about the Toyota Production System (TPS) and lean manufacturing a year ago while taking another class at Liberty University, I have been continuing to learn as much as I can about it. Explanation of Key Term According to Satterlee (2014), continuous improvement, which is sometimes referred to as Kaizen, is a management technique that historically involves several incremental improvements to a process rather than a single overpowering improvement or change (p. 253). Kaizen is a Japanese term for continuous improvement that came out of TPS, which literally means good change , or improvement. The big thing behind lean manufacturing and continuous improvement is the elimination of waste through continuously improving processes. There are commonly seven main wastes consisting of overproduction, over processing, excess inventory, defects, transportation, wasted motion, and waiting time, with an eighth waste of unused ...
