This PPT covers the concepts on Pathophysiology of Sexually transmitted diseases. STD like Chlamydia, Syphilis, Herpes Genitalis, Genital warts and Trichomoniasis
Gonorrhea
is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a bacterium.
Gonorrhea can grow easily in the warm, moist areas of the reproductive
tract, including the cervix (opening to the womb), uterus (womb), and
fallopian tubes (egg canals) in women, and in the urethra (urine canal)
in women and men. The bacterium can also grow in the mouth, throat,
eyes, and anus.
People get gonorrhea by having sex with someone who has the disease.
“Having sex” means anal, vaginal, or oral sex. Gonorrhea can still be
transmitted via fluids even if a man does not ejaculate. Gonorrhea can
also be spread from an untreated mother to her baby during childbirth.
People who have had gonorrhea and have been treated may get infected
again if they have sexual contact with a person infected with
gonorrhea.
Introduction to Sexually transmitted diseases with a concentration on certain diseases like syphilis - herpes - chancroid- gonorrhoea - chamydia - bacteria vaginosis- trichomoniasis-candidiasis- human papilloma virus
This powerpoint, deals with HIV pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, mode of transmission and diagnostic parameters.

STD is an abbreviated form of Sexually transmitted diseases. The meaning of STD disease is that the disease is imparted to others through sexual contact. Apart from sexual transmission, sexually transmitted diseases are also transferred to other persons in various ways. These are- breastfeeding, sharing of infected needles, etc. There are many diseases under the class of STD, and these can be cured by maintaining proper sexual health and hygiene. The mass awareness of sexually transmitted diseases is necessary for preventing them. Social media, newspapers and journals, television broadcasting, internet sources, and medical campaigning are the ways through which the transmission, symptoms, prevention, and prospective cure of STDs are conveyed to the common people. Examples of sexually transmitted diseases are- AIDS, gonorrhea, syphilis, etc.
Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are infections that are passed from one person to another through sexual contact. Most STDs affect both men and women, but in many cases, the health problems can be more severe for women as untreated STDs can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!

Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.

2. SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES
❖ Sexually transmitted diseases are infections that are spread from person to
person through intimate sexual contact.
❖ Sexually transmitted diseases are dangerous because they easily spread and
it is hard to tell just by looking who has an STD.
❖ 1 in 4 will contract STD between 15-55 yrs of age
❖ STD are infections that are commonly spread by sex, especially vaginal
intercourse, anal sex and oral sex.
Jegan Nadar
4. CHLAMYDIA
❖ It is most prevalent bacterial STD
❖ It is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis
❖ In women, symptoms may include
➢ Abnormal vaginal discharge,
➢ Burning during urination,
➢ Bleeding in between periods,
Jegan Nadar
5. ❖ Symptoms in men include
➢ Pain when urinating, and
➢ Abnormal discharge from their penis
Jegan Nadar
6. ❖ If left untreated in both men and women, Chlamydia can infect the urinary
tract and potentially lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
❖ PID can cause serious problems during pregnancy and even has the potential
to cause infertility
❖ It can be detected by tissue culture
❖ It is treated with antibiotics (note: penicillin is ineffective)
Jegan Nadar
7. GONORRHEA
❖ Caused by a bacteria known as Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
❖ This bacterium lives on moist mucous membranes in the urethra, vagina, rectum,
mouth, throat, and eyes.
❖ The infection can spread through contact with the penis, vagina, mouth or anus.
❖ Symptoms in men include
➢ Burning and pain while urinating,
➢ Discharge from the penis (white, green, or yellow in color)
Jegan Nadar
8. Symptoms in women may include
➢ Vaginal discharge,
➢ Burning or itching while urinating,
➢ Painful sexual intercourse,
➢ However many women do not show any symptoms.
Jegan Nadar
9. SYPHILIS
❖ Caused by bacteria called Trepenoma pallidum.
❖ If not treated Syphilis can be very dangerous and can cause brain damage
and other serious health problems
❖ Clinical manifestations of syphilis include the ulceration of the uro-genital
tract, mouth or rectum
❖ If left untreated the symptoms worsen
Jegan Nadar
10. HERPES GENITALIS
❖ The two most common forms of herpes are caused by infection with herpes
simplex virus (HSV).
❖ HSV- 1 is typically acquired orally and causes cold sores
❖ HSV-2 is usually acquired during sexual contact and affects the genitals, most
common viral STD
❖ Herpes is spread through skin contact with a person infected with the virus.
❖ This can occur through kissing, vaginal intercourse, oral sex or anal sex. Jegan Nadar
11. Symptoms
❖ Burning sensation followed by appearance of blisters
❖ Blisters rupture in 1-2 days; become painful ulcers
❖ Possible flu-like symptoms
❖ In males, sores occur on penis
❖ In females, sores occurs on labia, clitoris, cervix, vagina, urethra, perineum
❖ In both sexes: painful urination and sometimes fever
❖ Sores heal between 1-6 weeks
❖ If virus comes into contact with eye, can cause blindness
Jegan Nadar
12. GENITAL WARTS
❖ It is caused by Human papilloma virus
❖ There are more than 70 strains
❖ Some cause “genitalwarts” --moist, soft, cauliflower-like bumps (within 3 weeks - 8
months)
❖ Appear on cervix, labia, vulva, perineum in females
❖ In males warts appears on penis, urethra and scrotum
❖ It is treated topically with dry ice, liquid nitrogen > warts dry up and fall off in a
few days
Jegan Nadar
13. TRICHOMONIASIS
❖ It is caused by the single-celled protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis
❖ Can be passed on via damp towels, washcloths, and bathing suits if someone has the
parasite.
❖ Symptoms
❖ Typically, only women experience symptoms associated with Trichomonas infection.
❖ Symptoms include inflammation of the
➢ Cervix (Cervicitis)
➢ Urethra (Urethritis)
➢ Vagina (Vaginitis)
❖ Discomfort may increase during intercourse and urination.
