WHAT IS THE SBIR? The SBIR is an innovative procurement process, designed to:

THE CHALLENGE: ASSET LIFECYCLE MANAGEMENT The Department of Housing and Public Works: “Improve the Queensland Government’s understanding of multi-agency asset data, enhance its modelling and predictive analysis capability and drive improved whole of government decision making for asset maintenance planning and procurement.”

THE CHALLENGE: FLEXIBLE, SUSTAINABLE AND COST EFFICIENT SPORT VENUE LIGHTING The Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing: “Identify flexible, sustainable and cost efficient next generation lighting solutions for community field-based sports venues and provide guidance of the circumstances in which it is most appropriate to use these solutions.”

Image courtesy of Tourism and Events Queensland THE CHALLENGE: REEF WATER QUALITY MONITORING The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection: “Develop and supply affordable fine scale water quality monitoring sensors to deploy in Great Barrier Reef catchments, in order to inform improvements in farming practices and continue protecting the Reef.”

- 8. TESTING WITHIN GOVERNMENT (TWiG) PROGRAM What is it? A 12 week program for SMEs to work in partnership with DSITI. Why? TWiG is designed to: • Accelerate the growth and capability of SMEs in QLD • Provide valuable experience to SMEs in how to deliver products to large enterprises • Encourage DSITI to work with SMEs to become more agile and innovative when solving problems.

- CHALLENGES RELEASED Complex challenges are released to the open market, seeking creative and novel solutions from a wide variety of innovators. Applications are submitted online, then assessed and shortlisted by judging panels. 2. INFORMATION EXCHANGE Shortlisted applicants are invited to the Information Exchange Day Innovators can immerse themselves in the challenge and interact with Government personnel and challenge stakeholders. 3. SOLUTION PRESENTATION Shortlisted applicants are able to refine their solution before presenting their innovative concepts to a judging panel. Solutions are assessed against set criteria, and the best invited to develop their concept. 4. FEASIBILITY STUDY (up to six months) Selected applicants will receive up to $250 000 to test and prove the technical merit, feasibility and commercial potential of their proposed solution. 5. PROOF OF CONCEPT (up to 12 months) Applicants may receive up to $500 000 to develop, prototype and pilot their proposed solution. At the end of this stage, the solution may be procured by the agency who posed the challenge.
- WHY IS IT A CHALLENGE WORTH SOLVING? Deliver real procurement savings on building maintenance. Provide continuity and consistency of work, stabilising demand and price of service delivery. Provide certainty for industry through multi-year maintenance programs, stimulating job creation. Note: The ICT SME participation scheme applies to this challenge.
- WHY IS IT A CHALLENGE WORTH SOLVING? To ensure Queensland remains a healthy, active and competitive sporting state. Reduce the likely impact of long term chronic health issues linked to inactivity. Improve the sustainability of grassroots community organisations and provide opportunities for their growth.
- WHY IS IT A CHALLENGE WORTH SOLVING? The Great Barrier Reef is a treasured natural wonder with an incredible degree of biodiversity. Providing feedback to farmers on their impacts on water quality will allow them to improve their land management practices and protect the Reef. Improved water quality is vital to build the Reef’s resilience into the future.
- Further Information: Funding of $25 000 available to successful applicants to test and refine their products. Applications opened on 1 August 2016 and closed on 19 August 2016 12 week program begins 19 September 2016.
