1) There is one virus, varicella zoster virus (VZV), that causes two diseases: chickenpox (primary infection) and shingles (reactivation).
2) Acyclovir works by incorporating into the VZV DNA during replication, which stops replication. Clinical trials found acyclovir reduces complications of herpes zoster ophthalmicus like keratitis and uveitis.
3) Ocular involvement during herpes zoster ophthalmicus is common and includes inflammation like episcleritis and dendritic keratitis. Acyclovir treatment reduces the incidence but not duration of these complications.
