The Asian Apprenticeship Awards has completed its third year in operation since being founded in 2016, and our aim hasn’t changed: to celebrate the talent and diversity of British Asian Apprentices, their Employers and Training Providers.Since inception, we have noticed a significant transition among those within the skills sector about some of the stigmas behind apprenticeships within British Asian and BAME communities generally. Through the support of the Government and key partner organisations, we have been able to use this platform to propel our message into new communities across the country to encourage more people from British Asian communities to consider an apprenticeship route.2018 also saw a sectoral shift response with a 25% increase in involvement from employers compared with training providers and FE colleges which saw a decrease. The male and female split among finalists was quite interesting. Generally, females outweighed males in many of the sectors. However, the gender balance overall was affected by the male dominated sectors of Construction and Engineering & Manufacturing. When speaking with sector leaders, this was no surprise.“It is really disappointing to see the proportion of finalist as 100% male in Construction as well as Engineering and Manufacturing. Whilst recognising that a large proportion of the workforce in these two sectors are male there are still a significant number of females employed and many of these are excellent and well deserving of a place in the finals. We need to encourage them to come forward as entrants and show the skills and talent them possess”- Graham Hasting-EvansPresident of the British Association of Construction HeadsGroup Managing Director NOCNLastly, we saw from our data a significant increase in organisations supporting initiatives locally and nationally to raise the profile of apprenticeships within diverse communities. More people were using the platform of the Asian Apprenticeship Awards to not only encourage more people to enter and celebrate their successes but as a tool to raise awareness of diversity internally.
The BAME Apprenticeship Awards aims to showcase the range of talent and hard work within the BAME communities which will be made possible with the contribution of employers and learning providers who share these beliefs.

Data Strategy Action: Building Actionable PlansAileen Murray
A presentation to the Economic Developers Association of Canada 2019 Annual Conference.
Data mining and meticulous review isn’t for everyone, but when the right person is on the job and the data is brought to the surface, this careful research provides an invaluable opportunity. With the right collection of data, a creative and customized strategy can be built. Building strategy based on data is greater than building strategy based on assumption. The Town of Saugeen Shores, a community with a population of 14,000, on the shore of Lake Huron in Ontario, the Economic Development Strategic Plan provides recommendations and actions toward short and long term goals. Saugeen Shores is implementing a plan based on data and are seeing results.

Editor's Notes
Life will never be the same again: Fires, Floods, corona virus – any stats would be great re economic and social impact – include UN prediction that by 2030 6bn people in the world will not have access to clean drinking water – image of drought in Queensland – its here now and the world will need solutions or our people inland will have to desert their towns – solutions we can and are developing in Queensland
Democratisation of information and rapid growth of information (doubling every 12 hours). Generation of new technology – AI (already here – our phones – give an example), robotics (manufacturing productivity and access to dangerous situations – MSV Queensland example), big data (example in health diagnostics – MSV Q’lnd investment), IoT (productivity in ag – MSV investments plus myriota making it low cost), breakthroughs in food (V2 foods), breakthroughs in medicine (give an example, ideally Queensland based) and eventually the merging of human with machine as cyborgs or at the very least having computer chips inserted in our brains. Apart from the last one, that is under development definitely in the US and quite probably very advanced in China, the rest are here now
Emesent has developed Hovermap, the world’s first autonomous mapping and navigation solution designed for the underground. The Hovermap UAV solution brings visibility, measurement and monitoring to mines, tunnels and sewers, without putting people or equipment at risk. Hovermap does not need light, prior knowledge of the site to be flown, or GPS coverage.
and eventually the merging of human with machine as cyborgs or at the very least having computer chips inserted in our brains. Apart from the last one, that is under development definitely in the US and quite probably very advanced in China, the rest are here now
Our economies will never be the same again: 75% future high growth industries need STEM, 65% don’t yet exist. Stats on Australians studying STEM. Stats on India. We have work to do. Challenging as we need our young people to build the new industries – so different to the world we entered where the career path was relatively obvious
Doing things differently will have to become the new norm. ESTEAM and innovation key. Diversity key (women stats re current engagement, plus stats on success of women led companies, plus hub in Tel Aviv story). Collaboration key
Countries globally addressing this: The obvious ones – Israel, the startup nation – give stats, and mothers who tell their kids to be entrepreneurs. Other less talked about examples such as Vietnam - predicted job losses (7.8M), and Vietnam’s response; China spending on AI - 60% of worlds spending, plus mass entrepreneurship; India example. Now is not the time to be complacent or to think we can pretend its not happening. Now is the time to accelerate. We have the knowledge, the know how, the economic and political, relatively speaking, stability. We have the support structures available
And Queensland has been ahead of the game in Australia – for several decades. Queensland should be proud of its long history of engaging in innovation, investing in the necessary infrastructure and support over decades, starting right back with The Smart state
Slide on AQ – stats on jobs and investment and companies helped, examples of what done – eg AI Hub, Women founders, robotics cluster, Deadly Innovation, Regional investment in ecosystem building, such as the Smart Precinct in Townsville, The Precinct as a hub to connect us in SEQ, QCN Fibre, something about schools kids and STEM, seek others ideas on what to highlight across government and across ecosystem (so including Boeing etc)
We have a choice - do we want to have a slow growth economy or a fast growth economy – do we want our children to have well paying jobs – do we want to solve big global social and environmental challenges so our standard of living remains the best in the world - and do we want to make sure no one is left behind ? Because it’s the right thing to do sure, but also because we need peace prosperity and security.
The rest of the world is acting urgently. Queensland has been making great progress. But its not time to slow down. Its certainly not time to leave it to someone else. WE, all of us, need to join in and drive our future and that of our State, our nation, and our children. We look forward to working with all of you to make this a reality, to truly make Queensland THE Smart state, the safe state, the prosperous state, the secure state.
