The document discusses different methods for sourcing and processing images. It compares sourcing images from books, Google Images, stock image libraries, copyright free sites, and taking your own photos. It notes advantages like uniqueness, ease of use, and full ownership, and disadvantages like quality issues and copyright. The document also demonstrates processing techniques like cropping, scaling resolutions, and manipulating an image to look older/vintage.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Images sourced from books:
All images taken from “Film Journal” by
Eve Arnold.
3. Advantages of sourcing images this way:
Image sourced from book are often unique and rare. It would be difficult to find the
images else where if possible at all. Certain book specialise in a niche style.
Meaning that the content of the book is not like anything else that has been made.
For example the images I have chosen on the previous slide shows cast and crew
members from famous films of the past. The book contained images of a young
Michael Caine, at the time these images were ordinary, as his fame increased the
images become notable. Only in books will you find moments captured from years
ago. All old fashioned images that are found online have been retrieved from a
book or print form.
Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:
The issues with sourcing images from books is that the quality can be
compromised while scanning the image is. For example the centre of the book
might get in the way of the scan producing a more washed out image as the book is
held away from the scanner surface by the height of the binders. The binders
themselves can produce an ugly scar of the pdf file that is produced. On this image
shown below you can see how the shades darken over the the image looking from
right to left, this is due the the raised level that the book was held at.

5. Advantages of sourcing images this way:
Images are very easy to find with an extremely large array of possible results.
Google allows for a specific range of filters, for example you can search for only
high resolution images. Of these images that are found the quality can be very
high meaning that there are many uses with little limitation of what can be done
with them. The real advantage of Google is the ease at which instantly
thousands of results can be found of almost anything that can be thought of.
Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:
Google scans the internet for results that match the search. This means that it
searches for key words and Google accumulates these results from various
websites. This risks copyright infringement as Google does not limit the results
that come through. Meaning that Google images is filled with millions of images
that if used in non-personal use can risk prosecution. Aside from legal issues
people searching for images on Google will only look on the first or second
page of results. From there, there will only be a limited amount of good, useable
results. Consequently everyone ends up using the same images when a certain
thing is searched for in Google.
8. Advantages of sourcing images this way:
A copyright free site is a website dedicated to posting images that if used have
no danger of copyright infringement. This is a great place to find images for
professional work as it is legally allowed. These images are also free unlike a
stock image site. A stock image site however comes with a larger variety and
more specific aids for using Photoshop. For example textures can be found on
these sites that are very useful in design work. A wood texture might be
available that can then be used to give an extra dimension to Photoshop work.
Stock image sites sell these images at a price, but once owned the image can
be used however the customer wishes. There is also a very large diverse range
of images and subjects covered on these sites. Image on both sites can be of a
high quality.
Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:
Images found on stock image websites charge for images, in contrast images
on copy right free sites don’t but will be more commonly used with a smaller
selection of less specific and niche images. Often for the company images are
stolen by screen shoting the images, although a water mark attempts to prevent
this. Although the selection of images in large the images people come across
might be the same as yours.
9. Images sourced from your own existing images:
Photographs taken of another member of my college class.
10. Advantages of sourcing images this way:
The images you provided whether photos taken personally or design created. Any of your
own personal asset made will be tailored to exactly what you want. Any adjustments that
need to be made to fit the exact purpose of what you are trying to accomplish can be
made. Creatively there is a long list of benefits, but the legal side is also a big advantage.
Any work you make is legally owned by you, you can do with it as you please. It can be
enjoyable to create your own work.
Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:
Since you are personally creating your work, you are relying entirely on your own skill and
level of experience. With that being said that can be seen as either an advantage or a
disadvantage. It can also be time consuming to create your own work. The image I have
taken on the previous slide were snapped quickly which has cost the overall quality.
Camera settings are not optimised and the subject is marginally out focus, more notably
the shutter speed has left he image looking distorted. I also could have found a better
location for the image. My agenda was to get the images taken quickly. Locations can
also be a difficulty depending on what you are working on you may not have what you
require in the area that you live. If not it may be costly to travel, you will need a base of
money invest in your work. Hardware is necessary such as cameras, camera accessories
and a computer to work on. Once external work is complete software is needed to post-
production. All these things add up making sourcing images personally expensive. The
point I made earlier about rushing the process and the image coming out wrong can be a
problem. But other factors come into play that may force the final image to come out
wrong, sometime to consider.
15. Resolution image: Benedict Cumberbatchhttp://www.benedictcumberbatch.co.uk/wordpress/wp-
content/uploads/2012/11/ca2.jpg
300dpi for print 72dpi for web
16. Advantages of different resolutions:
A higher resolution image will produce a sharper looking image. This means
that the level of detail in the smaller areas of the image will be clearer with less
jagged and pixelated edges. Because of this denser concentration of pixels
image that are cropped with retail its detail and will still be usable and viewable.
If you would like to blow up an image to a much larger scale a higher
concentration of will allow this to work without pixilation and rough edges. A
resolution can also be set to exact dimensions. This is useful where adding an
image to an article or piece of work. For example on Word, InDesign and
PowerPoint it can be a good idea to do this as the image will fit the selected
space perfectly.
Disadvantages of different resolutions:
A higher resolution image means more pixels with consequently means that
more data is needed to store the image. Adjusting the resolution frequently can
result in overall loss of quality. If an image is altered to a lower DPI the image
can then become lost in a higher DPI.
18. Manipulated image of Christian Bale to appear like an old fashioned
classic image (based on the image of Peter O’Tool 6 slides previously):
19. Firstly I removed all the colour from the image, I did this to mirror the traditional
look of photographs before the time of colour cameras. This is easily done as
Photoshop has a black and white tool.
Example of the
style I am trying
to replicate.
20. The most pronounced and noticeable difference from here was to add noise.
The image is a very clean and professional taken with an expensive camera,
meaning that there is no noise hat so ever. This is inconsistent with the style
I’m looking for.
I only wanted to add a very small and
realistic amount, I settled for 6 in a
uniform distribution.
21. Older photos are taken on cameras that were only capable of capturing image
with far fewer megapixel. There I lowered the DPI to achieve a more authentic
look.
I found an appropriate amount at 160 DPI. The original resolution was 300DPI.
22. Finally I increased the contrast between black and white. I also increased the
brightness based on the look of the image of Peter O’Tool.
It is a very short and easy process:
