2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
3. Advantages of sourcing images this way:
Images sourced from books is a very trusted method as you can gain both the
imagery as well as all relevant information and context as to why the
photograph or image was chosen or produced.
Additionally places such as a public library or online digital catalogues can
provide as an excellent archive for imagery. Finally you can very easily search
specifically for imagery that you want, be it band photographs, food ect.
Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:
This method however can be slow and laborious to search and source all
images required as you must take time to look through individual books for the
right imagery as well as making sure to scan and source the author and all
other essential sourcing information including the publisher and date.
However looking for images in books can be extensively difficult due to the
sheer number of books and the lack of a prior reference to the images inside.
Therefore this method does require a more intense work period to find the
desired images. Following this images must be scanned and cannot be directly
copied into a digital format.
5. Advantages of sourcing images this way:
Google images is an absolutely massive source for images as it draws from thousands of websites and
stock photo libraries as well as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and many more high profile websites.
Using Google images allows the user to quickly and efficiently search through hundreds of images all
at once with a great amount of accuracy towards subjects, themes and features.
Also Google images allows the user to easily source the images use as there is a specific button that
takes them directly to the web page that the image is from. Additionally if simply doing this is no
sufficient then there is another tool to help search for a specific image by uploading the image required.
This can be both used to source the original image as well as to find the same photograph with a
higher resolution.
Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:
Sometimes, due to the numerous versions and re-uploads it can be difficult sometimes to source the
original version or upload of an image or work.
In some case the sheer number of images available can be overwhelming making it difficult to find a
specific image or an appropriate image.
8. Advantages of sourcing images this way:
Similarly to Google images, a stock image library or copyright free library provides a large and versatile
source of images, thousands of images are available.
Searching for specific photographs is very easy just as with Google images as simple search terms can
help to find very specific and appropriate photographs.
Often stock photographs are copyrighted, and need to be purchased for commercial use, or even to
simply download the image without watermarks. A copyright free library offers completely free to use
images that can be utilised for both personal and commercial use.e
Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:
10. Advantages of sourcing images this way:
The main advantage of using my own photographs is that there is both no need to purchase the
images in question or to acknowledge a photographer or ask for permission of use. This also means
that the images themselves can be composed to specifically fit the purpose that the intend to be used
for.
Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:
A disadvantage of producing your own images is that it takes time to produce the images that would
need to be used. While other methods allow the access to massive libraries of images almost instantly
this method can require planning, travel and money.
16. Advantages of different resolutions:
By changing the resolution you can make sure that the images being intended for use can be optimised
to be as high a quality as possible for the specific medium being used.
For example, reducing the resolution can allow you to reduce the file size of an image making it easier
and quicker to upload and download from online locations.
However, by using a higher resolution you can easily scale the image used without loss of clarity or
quality. However once a change has been implemented this can drastically effect the quality.
Disadvantages of different resolutions:
If a low resolution is used then it can be difficult or in many ways impossible to scale the image being
used without causing a drastic drop in the overall quality of the image.
18. Explain the changes you made to the image and explain why you made
those changes:
The changes that I made to the image included raising the original images
resolution in order to make it more useful across different screen sizes as well
as fixing damage to the photo that occurred through burn spots and small black
marks across the image. I did this simply by making use of the clone stamp tool
and copying clean areas across to the damaged sections. I did this to make the
image more aesthetically pleasing for a wider audience.
Additionally I added the caption ‘Parachute pants eat your heart out.’
This is simply a play on the classic 80s clothing parachute pants and a
comment on the images content; a parachute suit.
I utilised simple cursive text that is appropriate for the image that has been
included which was taken in 1912 as inventor Franz Reinchelt tested his new
invention at the Eiffel Tower in france; the parachute suit. However the
invention failed and he tragically died. The font plays to classic stereotypes of
the time in regards to style and traditional print conventions.
