Radio Podcast script- How did you use new Media technologies in the construction and research,
planning and evaluation stages?
Brian Montgomery- “Welcome to the Brian Montgomery show, today we have special guest Oliver Dyer on
with us.”
Oliver Dyer- “Hello Brian.”
Brian Montgomery- “Oliver is here to discuss his new documentary, The Wight Way which he and friend Alex
have produced for their school. So Oliver, what media technologies did you use during the construction and
research, planning and evaluation stages?”
Oliver Dyer- “Well Brian, I used a wide range of technologies before, during and after the production. For
example, during my research and planning stages I used a wide range of technologies and programmes such as
Microsoft Word. Although basic, I used this to produce mind maps from which I could draft some potential
ideas during the pre-production of my documentary. I did this so that I could express my ideas clearly before
placing this on my blog. I did this by print screening what I had produced and then inserting it as an image onto
my blog. I also used Word for the production of my questionnaire. Before actually creating my questionnaire I
first wanted to, again, create a draft from which I could experiment with; I did this on Word then, like before,
print screened it and inserted it as an image onto my blog.”
Brian Montgomery- “That’s very interesting Oli, I hope you don’t mind me calling you Oli.”
Oliver Dyer- “No, not at all Brian.”
Brian Montgomery- “Good, good. Now, what other technology did you use during your research and
planning?”
Oliver Dyer- “Well, after producing a mock-up of my questionnaire I then created a final questionnaire using
Survey Monkey. I did this as it was a highly accessible software platform which allowed me to distribute my
questionnaire to my target audience. This also tallied up the results which, again, made it easier for me. After
doing so I then used Microsoft Word to create Pie Charts which clearly show my target audience feedback. I
then print screened what I had created and inserted them onto my blog accompanied with a summary.”
Brian Montgomery- “Wow, you really have used a variety Oli, did you use any more?”
Oliver Dyer- “Oh yes Brian, I used a lot more. During my research and planning phase I also used Youtube; this
allowed me to watch documentaries both similar and not so similar. By doing so I could then pick out the
common codes and conventions and either decided to use them or challenge them later on in the
construction. Also when researching ideas for my newspaper advert and TV listing double page spread I used
search engine ‘Google’ to, again, look at similar products and therefore understand what conventions I need
and don’t need to include. When researching codes and conventions I also used ‘Prezi.’ I did this to broadcast a
variety of creative skills as well as ensure that I had thoroughly researched different products. When
researching Channel 4 print advertisements I used ‘Prezi’ to look at similar codes and conventions of their
products. This was also used to broadcast the editing process I went through. I also used ‘slideshare’; this was
done to show things such as my shot list, by doing so I felt that it made it easier for me to broadcast the
planning thoroughly.
Brian Montgomery- “Now, that’s only for your research and planning phase, I’m sure the listeners can’t wait to
hear what you did during production?”
Oliver Dyer- “Well, that process was a lot more complex Brian. I used a range of different equipment such as a
camera and a tripod. The Camera was an Aiptex 3D Camcorder which we borrowed from our school; I did have
my own camera however felt that this was a lot better as not only was it a lot more mobile but it allowed us to
film a variety of different camera angles and shots which my other camera couldn’t. The resolution of the
camera was also a lot better meaning that our audience could watch better and ultimately clearer. The Tripod
was also from our school, this was used to steady the camera during filming which we felt it did. We could pan
around for example and the camera would be a lot more still compared to what it would be like if I held it. Alex
and I also used the camera to create self-evaluations of each day of our filming. We did this to show what we
thought went well and what we could improve. We then uploaded them to the blog using the ‘insert video’
tool on our blog.
Brian Montgomery- “This is all good and well Oli, but what did you put all this footage on after?”
Oliver Dyer- “Good question, Bri. I transferred all of the footage captured into my Samsung laptop from which
we could then review and edit. I felt that this was a good method as if we didn’t like what we captured we
could always go and film again. After reviewing the footage, I then inserted it into Windows Movie Maker. I
used this program as I felt that it was just as good as other programs explored, such as Adobe, but was a lot
easier for both me and Alex to understand. We used this to add a variety of narration, music as well as the
obvious moving image. We also used this to edit all of our footage accordingly.”
Brian Montgomery- “What about in your two ancillary task, the Newspaper advert and TV listing?”
Oliver Dyer- “These were both done using Photoshop. I took the photos with the camera before editing them.
Using Photoshop I gave the image a colour boost and focussed the light of the colour on to the ice rink as I
wanted to make it look appealing; this created an angelic effect and made it stand out. I then blurred around
the outside of the photo as I wanted the focal point (the ice rink) to stand out and be noticed as it symbolized
one of the many attractions that Alex and I discussed during the documentary. This may not make much sense
with me just talking about it Brian, people will need to see the advert to know what I’m talking about!”
Brian Montgomery- “Right you are there, Oli! Well I hope they do see it because I really like it.”
Oliver Dyer- “Stop the flattery Brian, it doesn’t suit you!”
Brian Montgomery- “Haha, you’re obviously a fan of the show! Anyway, what about your TV listing then?”
Oliver Dyer- “Well for this I also used Photoshop. I took the main image with the camera and then edited it. For
example, I decided to make the font of the text on the left hand side of the page stand out more, in order to
do this I intensified the strength of the glow on the text so that it was easier to read.”
Brian Montgomery- “I’ve also wondered how you make a film, on in this case a documentary! Interesting!
Now, what about the evaluation stages..?”
Oliver Dyer- “For this stage I have used programs such as Prezi. This was done to answer the first question and
to thoroughly show what I have done to use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media
products. This allowed me to import various images and videos to answer the question creatively and
innovatively. I also used Author Stream for another of the questions, this allowed me to import audio over the
top of what I was presenting which allowed me to explain what I meant easier. Other technology used, again,
includes Movie Maker as well as the camera, yet again!”
Brian Montgomery- “Well, Oli we have just about ran out of time! Thank you very much for participating!”
Oliver Dyer- “No problem! Thoroughly enjoyed it!”
Brian Montgomery- “After the break we will have a bit of music from the legendary Queen…!”
