This document discusses different methods for sourcing and processing images. It describes advantages and disadvantages of sourcing images from books, Google Images, stock image libraries, copyright-free sites, and taking one's own photos. Some advantages of sourcing from books are free access and unique images, while disadvantages include low quality after scanning. Google Images allows finding many images quickly but image sizes may vary. Stock images can be exclusive but require payment. Using one's own photos avoids copyright issues but limits subject matter. The document also reviews cropping, scaling images to different sizes, adjusting resolution for print versus web, and providing an example of an edited image with a caption explaining the changes.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Francesca Gottschalk - How can education support child empowerment.pptxEduSkills OECD
Francesca Gottschalk from the OECD’s Centre for Educational Research and Innovation presents at the Ask an Expert Webinar: How can education support child empowerment?
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

3. Advantages of sourcing images this way:
An advantage of sourcing images from books is that they can be
accessed for free at public library's and you may not be able to find the
exact image from another source.
Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:
The main disadvantage of sourcing images from books is having to scan
or take a picture of the image to get it to a digital format. This reduces the
quality of the image which may then restrict how and where you sue the
image. These images are also copyrighted and cannot be used for
commercial work.
5. Advantages of sourcing images this way:
Using Google images is probably the easiest way to source an image as
thousands of images can be found in seconds depending on the image
you need. You can then print these images to get a physical copy as well
as already having a digital copy.
Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:
The main disadvantage of souring images this is way that the image sizes
and resolutions may vary. You may find an image you want to use but it
maybe to small and very pixelated if you try to enlarge it. You can get
round this issue sometimes as you can also picture search on Google
images. If you upload the image you are looking for, all other images that
are the same will be found and these may have a larger image size and
increased resolution.
8. Advantages of sourcing images this way:
An advantage of sourcing images this way is that if you buy the rights to
the image, no one else will be able to use the image, making it exclusive
to you or your business.
Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:
Disadvantages of both stock images and copyright free images are that
you need to pay to use these images. The price varies on size of images
as well as how you will use them for example if they are for commercial
image they will be more expensive than personal use. You may also need
to pay for the copyright rights for the stock images as well. These images
also usually have lots of watermarks across them to avoid people stealing
them.
10. Advantages of sourcing images this way:
Souring your own images is probably the easiest way to source an image
depending on the subject. This avoids any copyright issues you may
incur when using images for commercial work. This also allows you to get
the image style you want.
Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:
Disadvantages of sourcing your own images is if you can find the subject
you want to photograph as well as having the resources such as a camera
at least to take your own photos. Also, depending on you abilities, will
depend on the success of the images.
16. Advantages of different resolutions:
Advantages of using different resolutions allows you to adjust the image
size. The size of the image you need will depend on its use. For example,
if the image is for the internet, it will have a small resolution and image
size as this allows it to work faster on a website.
Disadvantages of different resolutions:
When an image has a small resolution it can be pixelated and have very
bad quality compared to a large resolution.
18. Explain the changes you made to the image and explain why you made
those changes:
To edit this image, I first changed the brightness/contrast to brighten the
image. I then used the hue/saturation to make the lights in the image
brighter. I used colour balance to take out the warm light in the image and
making the colours more natural. Adding a cooling filter helped to
remove more of the yellow warm tone of the image and make it more
balanced. I then added a grain filter to the image to create some texture
and make the image feel aged.
