Osmosis is the spontaneous movement of water molecules through a semi-permeable membrane from an area of higher water concentration to lower concentration in order to equalize the concentrations. It occurs when two solutions of different concentrations are separated by a semi-permeable membrane, causing water molecules to move from the higher to the lower concentration until concentrations are equal. Osmosis is driven by a concentration difference of water and plays an important role in biological systems, allowing for the transfer of water and nutrients between blood and cells in the body as well as the intake of water and minerals by plants.
