OPTOCOUPLERS
OPTO COUPLER IS DEFINED AS
 An opto-coupler also called as opto-isolator or
photolaser is a passive component that can split or
combine transmission data (optical power) feom
optical fiber.
 It is an electronic device which is designed to
transfer electrical signals by using light waves in
order to provide coupling with electrical isolations
between the input and output.
CATEGORISATION OF TYPES :
 There are many different types of optocoupler the
common types are categorised up on the :
 No of channels
 Operating temperature
 Output voltage
 Isolation voltage
 Packing time
 Current transfer ratio
APPLICATIONS OF OPTO-COUPLER
 Photoresistor based opto-isolators are the slowest
type of opto-couplers,but also the most linear
isolators and are used in the audio and music
industry.
 Most opto-isolators available use bipolar silicon
phototransistor sensors and reach medium data
transfer speed which is enough for applications
like electro-encephalography
HIGH SPEED AND OTHER APPS :
 High speed opto-isolators are used in computing
and communication applications.
 Other applications :
 photo copiers
 Industrial automation
 Professional light measurement instrument
 Auto-exposure meters
