This document summarizes optical metamaterials and some of their applications. Metamaterials are composites of nanostructures that can manipulate electromagnetic properties in ways not found in natural materials. They allow control of refractive index from negative to high positive values. This enables applications like super resolution microscopy and optical cloaking. Metamaterials are analogous to molecules in that their individual units (meta-atoms/molecules) impart functionality even when isolated, unlike bulk materials which require crystalline structure. Effective medium approximations are used to model metamaterial properties from their constituent nanostructures. Examples of metamaterial applications discussed include negative index materials, super resolution imaging using plasmonic effects, and proposals for optical cloaking devices.
