Chouinard Equipment Case Study
Chouinard Equipment, an outdoor gear and climbing equipment company, was founded by Yvon
Chouinard, a mountaineer that went into the business of running stores not necessarily for profit but
for the environment (Cortina, 2017). The Patagonia labeled was first created in 1973 (Cortina, 2017).
Patagonia committed to donating to environmental groups. Since 1985, the company has made $79
million (Cortina, 2017). The values of Patagonia s brand are to tell people what the company stands
for. The elements of the Patagonia s environmental philosophy are to: lead an examined life, clean up
the environment through environmental assessment program, do the penance of the organization,
support civil democracy, do good and to influence other companies. Chouinard business was like no
other business. The culture of this organization is built for the people of the organization. The culture
of the organization encourages employees to enjoy life, if employees can maintain a suitable
atmosphere. This company allows employees to be individuals without strict stipulations. Patagonia s
business incentive makes sure employees have time to pursue sports and try out new gear (Farrell,
Hirts Farrell, 2009). The organization also offers free yoga, organic café, free scooters and skateboards
and hiking trails (Schulte, 2014). Because of the great incentives, turnover at Chouinard is minimal
and employees are loyal to this organization (Schulte, 2014). Patagonia pampers its works while
making a profit. This organization is not built upon values that devalue associates or deprive
associates of personal life. Associates are allowed to do the things that are loved while making a
difference in the environment. This is an organization that puts family in its priorities and is one of the
first companies in America to offer on site child care (Schulte, 2014). By doing so the organizations is
doing something for employees that is accessible for families. Child care today is so expensive and it
also time consuming for many. On a daily basis, trying to get kids to and from daycare requires too
much time. This company has an on site child development center which allows parents to bring
children to work hassle free. The company also offers

Comparing Dante s Inferno and the Movie, What Dreams May...
Comparing Dante s Inferno and the Movie, What Dreams May Come
The movie s opening scene gives allusions to Dante s own life and his brief courtship with Beatrice.
Chris (Robin Williams) begins, When I was young, I met this beautiful girl on a lake, just as Dante
had met Beatrice when he was young. This lake just happens to be on the boarder of Switzerland and
Italy, Dante s native country. Anna, Chris love, finds him sitting on a hillside overlooking that lake,
and that scene will become a major focus for the rest of the movie. They believe that they are soul
mates, and unlike Dante and Beatrice, Chris and Anna marry and have two children.

While standing outside the walls of a city in this heaven, she covers his eyes, just as Virgil does to
Dante when faced with Medusa outside Dis, the capital of hell.
Dressed in black, instead of his usual saintly white attire, Albert delivers the bad news. Anna, so filled
with guilt, has committed suicide, so now she can never join Chris in Heaven. This starts the journey
where Chris goes through hell to find his beloved (Like Dante kind of). Even though Albert warns him
that this has never been done, Albert lets Chris go because he realizes that they are soul mates, just as
Dante thought he and Beatrice were meant to be together. As they prepare to leave heaven, a man who
looks like Freud accompanies them. The three of them venture into hell, and they tell Chris to try not
to abandon all hope (cf., the inscription over Dante s gate to hell) and try not to lose his mind.
They are now on the river Styx, and they enter an artist s rendition of Canto 8. They are pulled off the
boat by the dead bodies (cf., the wrathful) trying to attack them in the water. The boat flips over, and
they somehow manage to get to shore.
I don t remember if the scene I m about to describe occurs before or after the Styx scene. The
Rebellious Angels guard Dis in Dante, but here it seems to be guarded by the sinners in Round one of
Circle seven: the violent against their neighbors. At this point, Chris realizes that the

Importance Of The Temple Of Heaven
Architecture is something we are observing, living and being in relation every day. However, it seems
that we may only consider the modern architectures constructed nowadays but forget the importance
to appreciate those ancient architectures, especially those ancient Chinese architectures we should be
proud of. In this essay, Temple of Heaven in Beijing is going to be discussed and evaluated.
According to Your Beijing China Travel Guide, a famous website introducing different tourist spots in
Beijing to foreigners, the Temple of Heaven is now located in the Chongwen District, Beijing. It was
where emperors of the Ming Dynasty (1368 1644) and Qing Dynasty (1644 1911) held the Heaven

It is actually the Temple of Heaven in the practical sense. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the
emperors would offer sacrifice here to the Heaven on the day of the Winter Solstice in every year.
Imperial Vault of Heaven was constructed along the middle axis, locating at the north of the Altar to
Heaven. It is the place housing the Gods tablets to be used at the Heaven Worship Ceremony. It is
famous for the surrounding Echo Wall, and also the Three Echo Stones and the Dialogue Stone, which
are all utilizing the theory of sound wave, showing the intelligence of constructions. Crossing the
Danbi Bridge from the Imperial Vault of Heaven, the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is presented. It
is a big palace with round roof and three layers of eaves, where the emperor held the worship
ceremonies to pray for good weather and abundant harvests. It is the earliest building of the Temple of

Why Is Osama Bin Laden Justified
The assassination of Osama Bin Laden was justified because he murdered thousands of innocent
people, and trained and armed other terrorist organizations. However, some think that his assassination
was not justified because he was killing for his religion.
We all remember the terrorist attacks of 9/11. It was a bright and sunny morning when a commercial
airliner crashed into one of the twin towers. Everyone thought it was an accident, it was all over the
news, but in mere seconds, the second plane hit. At that moment, everyone knew what had happened,
the most devastating terrorist attack in U.S history had just occurred. By the time everything was said
and done, America was confused and filled with rage, and when Osama Bin Laden and his terrorist
organization, Al Qaida, claimed responsibility, we were ready for payback. If there is one thing that
Toby Keith got right, it s that the US of A does not take kindly to being attacked by terrorists and so,
we clashed with our enemies in the Middle East for over a decade, but that s another story. Osama Bin
Laden had been conducting terrorist attacks ever since the 90 s, like when the U.S embassy in Kenya
was bombed in 1998, but we didn t take action until after we got hit on American soil.
It s not just the terrorist attacks that slaughtered oh so many innocent people who makes Osama Bin
Laden so bad, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

you are basically told that anyone who has faith in anything other than Islam should be dominated and

with the world but extremists like Osama Bin Laden thought differently and decided to do something.
As a result, you have the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and god knows how many

Heart Pathophysiology
The function of the heart is to pump blood around the body. It is a hollow muscle and can be found
between the lungs in the mediastinum and behind the sternum and between the second and sixth ribs.
It is the size of a fist and has four chambers. The upper chambers are the left and right atria, with the
bottom chambers the left and right ventricles. The heart consists of several layers: the pericardium
(outer protective covering of fibrous tissue), the epicardium (made up of epithelial cells and secretes
serum which prevents the layers rubbing), the myocardium (the muscular wall of the heart and forms a
septum which separates the right and left side of the heart.
The septum also contains the sino atrial atrioventricular nodes, which is a type ... Show more content

There are four valves in the heart that stop the blood from flowing in the wrong direction.
These are the tricuspid, pulmonary, mitral and aortic valves. The SA node (sino atrial node) stimulates
the atrium to contract forcing blood through the valves to the ventricles. The AV
(atrioventricular) node then stimulates the ventricles to contract which pumps blood out of the heart.
The right ventricle pumping blood to the lungs, and the left ventricle pumping blood to the body.
There are three types of circulation of the blood. These are pulmonary, systemic and portal circulation.
Pulmonary circulation is where the blood is pumped to the lungs. It arrives deoxygenated from the
superior and inferior vena cava into the right atrium. It then is pumped through the tricuspid valve into
the right ventricle. The blood then leaves through the pulmonary valve into the pulmonary artery
where it splits into the left and right pulmonary arteries and goes into the lungs and is re oxygenated.
The oxygenated blood returns from the lungs by the pulmonary veins and

Blackbeard
From working for the British on a Privateer then moving to Jamaica and taking up piracy, Blackbeard
s life was full of excitement.
Blackbeard was known as Edward Teach was British. It was believed that Teach was born in the 1680
s. He was operating in Jamaica as a privateer. Privateers are a private, armed boat hired by the
Government during the War of the Spanish Succession or Queen Anne s War. During the war in Teach
had become a very skillful sea robber. By the end of the war in 1716 Teach as most of the privateers
moved to Jamaica to take up piracy (Kirkpatrick). When Teach became a pirate he Joined the crew of

When Blackbeard captured the La Concorde he found satisfying so, he took the ship as his own. Teach

canons on the ship which change the number from 26 to 40 canons. So now the once French cargo
ship is now a 110ft, 300 ton ship with 40 canons (Hamilton 8 9). Aboard the Queen Anne s Revenge
Blackbeard never let his crew forget who was incharge. Some of Blackbeard s crew was foolish
enough to accept a crazy challenge. The challenge was to see who could stay below deck in a room
while sulfur was burning the longest. Once the the sulfur was lit crew members were running to get
above on the deck and soon all of the crew members were out in the open gasping for fresh air. The
last one to come out was of course Blackbeard. Teach once shot one of his own crewmen over a
drunken game of poker. Once Blackbeard even said that If he didn t kill one of his crew members once
in awhile, they would forget who he was (Hamilton 16).
When Blackbeard attack he put fear into people s eyes. His long black beard which gave him the
nickname Blackbeard and his mad man s look. Charles Johnson wrote in his book A General History

Nureyev Dancers Analysis
Some bits and pieces from the hoopla surrounding the cancelled premiere of Nureyev at the Bolshoi,
coming from people close to the situation in Moscow: The most objectionable bits in the ballet were:
i) a jumbo sized photograph by Richard Avedon of Nureyev naked with genitalia on full display as a
prominent feature of the stage decoration ii) the performer of Nureyev s role being asked to show his
naked bosom bent over with butt cheeks spread out in the scene depicting the photo shoot where the
aforementioned photograph was made. Ovcharenko refused to perform naked, was allowed to wear a

Hamburg and the Canada ballet companies. However, this Karenina faced delays of its own, and
Bolshoi s head of planning Irina Chernomurova (director Vladimir Urin s wife), being a great friend of
Neumeier, decided to accommodate him and moved Karenina s Bolshoi premiere into the next season,
asking Possokhov to accelerate his work plan and get Nureyev ready for this summer. Along the way,
to keep things even clearer for Neumeier, the Bolshoi decided to sacrifice the revival of La Phille du
Pharaon, also originally considered for the 2017/18 season. So, poor planning by Bolshoi s leadership

The Pros And Cons Of Thalidomide
Hazardous Chemical Paper
Introduction:
In 1957, one of the worst chemical drugs was put on the market to result in a major tragedy in the
Chemical field. This drug was Thalidomide. Thalidomide is a mutagen, studied in toxicology, in
which it causes damage to the chemical material within an embryo when in development. This drug
was created in West Germany by a pharmaceutical company, Chemie Grünenthal (Recognition of
Thalidomide Defects, n.d.). During this time when Thalidomide was introduced to the market, it was
classified as safe to use. This drug was originally prescribed to pregnant women to prevent morning
sickness, insomnia, anxiety and upset stomachs (Breaking News., n.d.). However, it was later

Thalidomide has been shown to help stop the growing process of cancer, and other skin conditions.
One example of this was in 1964, a professor named Jacob Sheskin from Hadassah University
Hospital had a patient with leprosy. This professor then used thalidomide to help treat it, and the
results were successful (Robertson, Jan 11, 2015.). By looking at the image on the right, it can be seen
that Thalidomide does bind to the protein CRBN, as recently stated up above. When a carcinogen
begins to cause a cancer, thalidomide actually stops the process of the cancer from growing. Similarly,
when a baby is growing, thalidomide stops the advancements in the body, creating a negative
outcome. But when thalidomide is taken when negative advancements are already occurring like
cancer, it is helpful to stop them. This is a great example to show that Thalidomide should remain on
the market to help people with certain conditions. However, there should be rules set into place. For
example, if a person doesn t want to have any more kids, then they should be able to take thalidomide
as they won t be affected. Thalidomide only affects the baby when it is developing, so it should be
perfectly fine for the mother to take it if she is done having kids. (Strong, Jan. 11,

History Of The New Zealand Army Essay
QUESTION 3:
HOBBITON
History:
In 1998 was when it all started ,looking for the perfect area of land suitable for a village of Hobbits,
Peter Jackson found the Alexanders family farm while he was on a aerial search suitable for what they
needed with pristine rolling grasslands, like a slice of ancient England (Wikipedia TLOTR), looked as
though Hobbits had already begun excavations (Alan Lee ,set decorator). After some negotiations were
made with the Alexander family ,shortly after construction begun in March 1999 transforming the
landscape into the set for Hobbiton. The New Zealand army also got involved bringing heavy
machinery to build a 1.5 kilometer road from the nearest highway to the construction site. Peter
Jackson wrote: I knew Hobbiton needed to be warm, comfortable and feel lived in. By letting the
weeds grow through the cracks and establishing hedges and little gardens a year before filming, we
ended up with an incredibly real place, not just a film set
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobbiton_Movie_Set).So much detail went into creating the perfect
atmosphere for the 37 Hobbit holes ,gardens and even hedges. In December 1999 filming commenced
for The Lord of the Rings and lasted for three months. The set, originally built out of untreated timber,
ply and polystyrene, was never meant to last, but only for the duration that was needed however it
became a place of interest for tourist.

Time Management Within The Military
Time management plays a vital role in each and every unit with the United States Army and it affects
how quickly they can respond to problems when they arise. Time management encompasses just about
everything in the Army. From Senior Non Commissioned Officers (SNCO) making sure their soldiers
are in the right place at the right time by tracking all their soldiers appointments and duties or the
squad leaders and other Non Commissioned Officers making sure that maintenance is being
completed on time so the aircraft are ready to fly, and making sure that soldiers are ready for their
flights for the day all the way down to the lower enlisted soldier making sure he or she is on time and
ready to complete their day. These are the just a few of the things that time management encompasses
within the military. So what is time management? Time management is a skill that needs to learned or
if need be taught to every soldier within the ranks. Imagine a unit that has no time management skills.
Soldiers are late for flights, they miss appointments and in turn receive article fifteens, Senior Non
Commissioned Officers are being scolded by their First Sergeants for not being able to properly track
their soldiers which in turn falls downhill to the squad leaders. Maintenance isn t completed and a
majority of the fleet is down leaving only a few aircraft in an airworthy status, as the operational

Essay about Recurring Decimals
Recurring Decimals Infinite yet rational, recurring decimals are a different breed of numbers.
Mathematicians, in turn, have been fascinated by these special numbers for over two thousand years.
The Hindu Arabic base 10 system we use today was inspired by the Chinese method of decimals
which was actually around 10000 years old. Decimals may have been around for a very long time, but
what about recurring decimals? In fact the ancient Greeks were one of the first to deal with recurring
decimals. The Greek mathematician Zeno had a paradox in which the answer was a finite number that
was a sum of an infinite sequence. The answer to his problem was a recurring decimal, and it
definitely would not be the last time recurring decimals played ... Show more content on

What about the number n ? Can the period of the number 1/n be found also? These questions are what
I hope to answer in my project. Before utilizing mathematical resources, I decided to approach my
problem from scratch and just experiment with numbers on a lazy Sunday morning. The patterns I
encountered when working with these numbers were stunning; to keep things simple, I started with
small numbers as denominators. Soon enough, I realized that the primes 2 and 5 do not produce any
recurring decimals. 3 only provides one repeating digit, and yet 9 does too. The number 7 produces 6
repeating digits, but the number 11 only produces two digits. What is going on here? Well, it appears
that some primes p have p 1 repeating digits, but not all of them. However, all primes except 2 and 5
seem to have a period that is (p 1)/n long, where n is some integer. What about the squares of primes?
I would like to give the example of 3; although 9 (3x3) has the same number of repeating digits as 3
(1), 27 actually has three repeating digits. Even more stunning, 81 (3^4) has nine repeating digits. It
appears as if as the number is raised by a power of 3, then the number of repeating digits is also raised
to some power. The number 3 is actually an exception to the general rule that I will mention, and the
repeating digits of 3 to the nth power is just 3^(n 2). A conventional example is 7; 7 has 6 repeating
digits but 49 (7x7) has 42 (6x7)

Kingdoms Rise And Fall And Out Of Their Ashes Come New...
Kingdoms rise and fall, and out of their ashes come new kingdoms. Over and over again, the pattern
recurs throughout history. China s history and culture were born of such patterns, and it all began 1.7
million years ago.1 Archaeologists from modern times found the remains of the early hominid species
Homo erectus in Yunnan Province, which was called Peking man. Peking man could walk upright,
create fire, and possessed the ability to make stone tools, but it wasn t until 2183 BCE that the vestiges
of China truly began to emerge. The Yellow River, the cradle of the Chinese civilization, flooded
regularly, and King Shun appointed his minister Yu to rectify that problem. When Yu diverted the

The Shang exhibited extremely high quality workmanship and advancement in the working of things
other than bronze, including jade and pottery. They were the most advanced bronze working
civilization in the world at the time. Most of what is known about the earliest vestiges of the Shang
culture is derived from remains of the Shang in Anyang, which was founded by King Pan Geng in
1320 BCE. The oracle bones gave the names of at least eighteen kings before Pan Geng, and
according to tradition, the Shang had moved their capital five times before finally settling at Anyang.2
Anyang was conquered by Zhou armies led by King Wu in 1050 BCE in the Battle of Muye. King
Wen founded the Zhou dynasty, but it was his son, Wu, who became the first king to take the title Son
of Heaven . He established the political concept of a Mandate of Heaven, which claimed that kings
ruled with the sanction of the gods. If a king proved corrupt, cruel, or just incompetent, it then became
appropriate for another family to overthrow the corrupt dynasty and take the throne under a new
Mandate of Heaven.3 Under the Zhou dynasty, a feudal form of government became the political
institution, with landlords becoming vassals to the emperor. Such an alliance system was vulnerable
and extremely dependent on the loyalties of the regional landlords. In 1042 BCE, Wu was succeeded
by his young son, Cheng. Cheng s uncle, the Duke of Zhou, became regent. The Duke of Zhou

Comparison of Two Mathematics Curricula
Comparison of Two Mathematics Curricula Math teachers have become increasingly disenchanted
with the traditional materials they are forced to teach due to the existing California standards. The goal
of the teachers is not that they need to change the standards, but there needs to be a better curriculum
to adequately bring students up to those standards. Current curricula follow the letter of the standards
that California has implemented, but they sometimes seem to be based on nothing substantial which
would give credibility to the course of study. If a curriculum is developed to meet a set of standards,
that is exactly what it will do. However, the goal should be to not only meet but to exceed the stated
standards; or, at the very least, give students the ability to go beyond the standard. In this argument,
the California standards are the lowest rung of the ladder that the state should encourage students to
climb. Yes, the student will have a basic understanding of mathematical concepts if they meet the
standard, but they will not have any impetus to reach beyond that and achieve something more. In this
research paper, two different curricula possibilities are examined for their relative merits; one which is
meant to just meet the recommended California mathematics standard as set forth by the Common
Core State Standards Initiative (2005), and one which is recommended by a practical body, the
National Science Foundation (NSF), to encourage students to achieve a higher,

Narrative Style and Structure of James and the Giant Peach
The books that Roald Dahl has written have very interesting narrative styles. In the story James and
the Giant Peach, Dahl uses vivid imagination. He uses many imaginary situations but yet at the same
time encompasses enough realistic situations that the reader can still relate to it. In James and the
Giant Peach, it starts out introducing a boy named James Henry Trotter who lives with his loving
mother and father. The narrator of the book tells us, the readers, that James and his family s dream is
to sail to New York City and climb all the way to the top of the Empire State Building. This
introduction makes us think that this story is realistic, because the ... Show more content on

These bugs carry on many different human like characteristics, which help make Dahl s imaginative
story seem somewhat realistic. All of these bugs talk to James about how they hate life on the hill and
a bug eats away the stem of the peach and they go rolling down the hill. Throughout the story the
peach, with all of the characters inside, is on a dangerous adventure. After going through oceans and
winds, the peach lands them on the top of the Empire State Building. The bugs help capture the evil
aunts and they live happily together.
This story is told in the third person point of view, which helps the reader understand the whole story
and not just one character s side. If the story was told by just one character s point of view, the story
could be similar but one would only see the view of that character. By Dahl using third person point of
view, this allows the readers to see each characters views and thoughts of what is happening in the
story.
Also, throughout the book Dahl has the narrator asking many questions to make the reader imagine
what is going to happen next. Usually the question comes toward the end of a page so the reader has to
wonder or is caught in suspense until the page is flipped. This gives the reader a chance to use their
imagination and guess what happens next. I believe this sort of writing helps Dahl pull his

are of the New Testament. The 27 books can be classified according to authorship, target group and
time in history in the Christian calendar.
The first four books of the New Testament are called Gospels and are named after their writers who
lived with Jesus. These books give details on the life, teachings, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The life of Jesus is often declared as the Good News to the world. Good News because

Hip Bursitis Research Paper
Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome
The medical definition of bursitis is an inflammation or irritation of the bursa, which is a small, fluid
filled sac found in articulation. Inflammation occurs from the decrease of friction of the bursa between
the bones, muscles, and skin. Bursitis can be an acute or chronic condition. Acute bursitis are often a
result from an infection or injury, while chronic bursitis are caused by long periods of repetitive
motion or use of the affected joint. The most common sites include the elbow, hip, shoulder, knee, heel
and even the base of the big toe.
Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (formally known as Trochanteric Bursitis, or GTPS for short) is a
hip bursitis which distresses the superficial trochanteric bursa located over the greater trochanter of
the femur. Inflammation of the trochanteric bursa is due to muscles and tendons rubbing over the
bursa causing friction against the femur. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rest, cold therapy and non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), such as aspirin and
ibuprofen, are most effective to reduce inflammation stemming from injury and overuse. Combination
of physical therapy and activity modification are recommended for proper stretching and
strengthening of the hip and to avoid activities which may aggravate the area. In the event of a septic
hip bursitis, an infection of the bursa, the doctor may perform an aspiration, in which a needle and
syringe is used to remove fluid from the bursa followed by a prescription of antibiotics to prevent the
spread of infection. If rest, physical therapy and NSAIDs are no longer effective in relieving the pain,
then corticosteroid injections are administered. Although surgery is rarely needed, it may be warranted
with some chronic hip bursitis. The three types of surgery most often used are tendon repair and
iliotibial band release, osteotomy of the greater trochanter and

Literary Devices In The Stranger, By Albert Camus
In the novel, The Stranger, by Albert Camus, Camus uses a variety of literary devices in order to
create a moment of inward reflection from readers, in which we reflect on just how absurd our
existence is. Camus expresses his critique through one major character, Meursault, and a few minor
characters as well. Camus s use of irony pushed readers to look beyond the surface, and come to the
conclusion of where the irony was displayed. Camus also made use of ironic moments in order to
contrast the expectations of society, to how Meursault differs from that, all to gradually expose the
hypocrisy of mankind. Camus generally uses this literary device in order make us evaluate our own
selves and more importantly to display the fact that we as people can be truly happy, only if we accept
our fate, instead of fighting it. In a way, he s suggesting we be more like Meursault. Examples of this
would be the funeral caretaker insisting that Meursault view his mother s body, and Meursault
continuously refusing. Camus does this to make people think: what exactly is wrong with Meursault
not wanting to see his dead mother? Through this technique camus shows societal expectations of how
people are supposed to mourn lost, and certain responses to lost are deemed abnormal. Thus Meursault
s lack of grief automatically made him an outsider. Other uses of irony can be shown through
Meursault s interactions with the chaplain, and the authority involved in his criminal case played out
later on in the

Aristotle And Samford
When I proposed the question, If the laws of Samford were causing you to go against your own moral
standard, would you break them? I heard a variety of answers from different students. However, one
individual talked about how by going to Samford, we acknowledge their laws and therefore are
obligated to follow them because we attend this University. He went on to say that we give up certain
freedoms when we go into different places because everyone has differing beliefs about how things
should work. He continued by saying that if we have a problem with the way Samford is run or what
they are making us do then we can leave because it is not our job to tell them how to govern, but to
find a place that lines up with how we think a place should ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In order to understand this more completely, Aristotle says, For even if the end is the same for a single
man and for a state, that of the state seems at all events though it is worth while to attain the end
merely for one man, it is finer and more godlike to attain it for a nation or for city states
(Nicomachean Ethics, 66). Aristotle believes that the state and the individual should work hand in
hand to be successful. Also, he believes that a human s natural desire is to be happy. Therefore, if the
government and the individual were working hand in hand then both parties should be happy. People
are born to be governed, he argues. According to Aristotle, laws should express human nature. The
laws should line up with what we believe. Aristotle also points out that there is no such thing as
personal morality. Therefore, no need to challenge the authority of the government. Parts of Aristotle s
view agree with what the person I interviewed said about this question, but other parts do not.
Aristotle would agree that you should not challenge the authority of those governing over you, but he
would find out how it fits with your human nature instead of leaving. By saying that he would leave
the school if because their views did not line up, the person I interviewed is admitting that there is a

Islam and Great Sectarian Divide
Bottom of Form *
Brothers at war
FOR two sects united by their belief in one Maker, one Book and one Prophet, the amount of blood
spilt in the name of their respective faiths by Shias and Sunnis is truly staggering. This is specially so
when one considers the tiny differences that define and divide them.
Since the earliest days of Islam in the 7th century when the schism first tore the young Muslim
community apart, the two sects have been warring incessantly. Untold thousands have been killed over
the years, and this internecine war continues to devastate communities and nations.
I am not qualified to go into the rights and wrongs of this old conflict. However, as a student ... Show

Now the shoe is on the other foot, and it is the minority Sunnis under the Shia heel. In Syria, the
minority Alewites have ruled since the Seventies. In Sunni Saudi Arabia, the Shias are marginalised.
The list goes on, but one thing is clear: both sects harbour deep distrust of each other. Indeed, in a
recent Pew Institute survey on attitudes in the Muslim world, only 53 per cent of those surveyed in
Pakistan considered Shias to be Muslims. This figure is even lower in several other Muslim countries.
There is similar doubt on the other side, with many Shias casting doubt on Sunni beliefs. So clearly,
time has only sharpened this schism, rather than healing old wounds.
But while more often than not, these tensions are limited to neighbourhoods and nations, the
emergence of a Shia theocracy in Iran has taken these differences to a new level.
Although mediaeval Islam saw states engaging in sectarian warfare, this tendency was later
suppressed in modern times, as we have just discussed. However, although the Iran Iraq war was
fought over territorial claims and counter claims, overtly sectarian symbolism was deployed by both
sides.
And when the Americans invaded Iraq in 2003, the ruling Baath Party was ousted, and the minority
Sunnis displaced from power. This led to a Shia revival, and a major gain in Iranian influence. Indeed,
the US led campaign was widely viewed in the Middle East as

Liberal Democracy In Canada
When evaluating the liberal democracy or constitutional monarchy in Canada it is imperative to
identify that the Canadian governing system cannot unambiguously be either correct or incorrect.
Hence, Canada s democratic system functions well enough; nonetheless it would further benefit from
adopting a Nordic democratic socialist model as well as adopting a proportional representation
electoral system. A Nordic democratic system would benefit the citizens by providing them with
universal health care, closely similar wages, free and inexpensive education, public pension plans, and
virtually free trade. Second, if Canada is to adopt a proportional representation system the citizens will
be better represented. Despite these flaws in the liberal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is an often overlooked freedom because one may forget that this freedom is not a freedom that
every individual has. Specifically in many third or second world countries, people are eradicated
because of their opinions or request for freedom and reform. Something as simple as civil
disobedience has severe consequences in these countries. On the other hand, in Canada there are little
to no consequences for civil disobedience or requesting the government to change their decision.
Furthermore, in a sense the government allows pressure groups to be formed, and non government
organizations to help other s lives. Additionally, courts in Canada are open to those who wish to
challenge the laws. Finally, the media is not censored for those who wish to promote their beliefs. In
many totalitarian countries, people are unknowingly snatched of the right to think on their own, and
demand reform. As a result, though the Canadian liberal democracy may have flaws, the rights and
freedoms that are often overlooked affect the everyday lives of the citizens and the government

Theme Of The Interlopers And The Machine That Won The War
The Interlopers and The Machine That Won The War are two different short stories that heavily push
the themes of irony and suspense and although they may share these similarities I believe that they
also have many differences. Throughout this essay I am going to be breaking down these two stories
to find what sort of similarities and differences they contain. A similarity? They are both fictional
stories. A difference? One takes place in a Sci fi and futuristic setting, while the other takes place in a
more modern, or possibly older time frame.
Although two stories can have a similar overall genre, they may have a different and more specific
genre. A good example of this is the stories, The Interlopers and The Machine That Won The War.
Both of these stories are works of fiction, none of the events that take place in either of them are real.
On closer inspection we realize that although they are both fiction, they are different types of fiction.
The Interlopers is a mystery. The story starts by explaining that in time past two neighboring families
went to court over they strip of land between them, to find out which family owned it. When they
court reached their decision and chose which family won, they losing family, frustrated that they didn
t get the land, started a rivalry that would last generations. They mystery? Who are they families and
why are they still fighting over this land, years and years later. The Machine that Won The War is a
work of Sci fi. It has

Body Image Of Young Women In The Fashion Industry
The fashion industry
Under society s customs for decades, young women have been put under the pressure and anticipation
to have perfect bodies. That is, thin and curved, beautified by applying pounds of makeup to their face
but not appear ridiculously overdone. Who s responsible for these standards imposed on young
women? When a young girl picks up the model along the cover of Vogue being called flawless, it s
easy for her to then aspire to be a real life imitation of the photocopy. These companies produce
magazine covers shown with girls images daily. As if keeping the perfect body wasn t hard enough our
culture also forces girls into the forever expanding world of composition, however, body image is a
surging subject for young women. Advertisements and pictures of lean female models are all over.
Girls are measured and perplexed by their physical appearances with attire intended to enhance a
facial expression; social media, magazines, the society, marketing campaigns and advertisements add
to a strain of excellence.
Young girls not only could be better but need to be more upright and feel driven to throw the perfect
figure. The fashion industry is a major target of body image issues, as they believe clothes look better
on tall and svelte women. Established on a survey participated by 13 to 17 year old in the U.S., 90%
felt pressured by fashion and media industries to be slick, with more than 60% routinely compares
themselves to models, while 46% will endeavor to attain

Romeo And Juliet Deaths
Romeo and Juliet, the Shakespearean playwright of two star crossed lovers, ends in two tragic deaths
of both Romeo and Juliet. Who can be hold responsible for their deaths, when so many things went
wrong along the way? Many could be held responsible for the deaths of the two lovers, but Romeo
himself deserves to carry the heavier load of responsible for not only his death, but the death of his
lover, Juliet as well. The young boy s acts of irresponsibility, impulse, belligerence, immaturity, and
streak of bad decisions only brought definite consequences to both himself and Juliet. As the story of
Romeo and Juliet further progresses, Romeo s true character becomes more and more apparent; he
seems to act solely by impulse. Romeo acts moreso with his emotions, and sudden thoughts than his
brain which stores reason and logic. This causes for tragedy and unfortunate circumstance by the end
of the poem. This shows how impulsive he is in most of his decisions and how he tends to be very
dramatic in everything that he does. When Romeo discovers that Juliet is dead, he almost immediately
dramatically decides to drink poison, to kill himself. Here s to love, O true apothecary, thy drugs are
quick thus with a kiss I die. Which shows how quickly he makes wrash and dramatic decisions
without thinking it through. If Romeo had not been so careless and impulsive in his decision, Juliet
would have awoken and they would both still be alive. Romeo is also extremely short tempered and
belligerent. Often, Romeo resorts to violence when conflict occurs, he is quick to act out of rage. This
goes hand in hand with how impulsive and irresponsible he is, which further supports that he was
responsible for him and Juliet s death. Romeo kills Paris out of rage and fury, as violence has become
a natural instinct or reaction for him. Romeo killed Tybalt as well, over a simple joke. That is two
lives that Romeo himself his responsible for taking, is it hard to believe he could be responsible for his
own as well as Juliet s, due to what we ve seen him capable of over the course of the story. O, I am
slain if thou be merciful open the tomb lay me with Juliet. Romeo seems to be careless of any
consequences he may face due to his

Overview of Earth´s History and Periods Essay
Precambrian Era The Precambrian era laster 4600 541 million years ago. During this time, there were
no plant life on the planet. Most of the things that were on the planet were rocks. The most common
type of rock was Isua greenstone. Most rocks have been eroded away, subducted, or metamorphosed.
During this time, the atmospheres and oceans were formed, plate tectonics began to build up
continental masses. The air during this time was mostly made up of water vapor, carbon dioxide, and

Ordovician Period The Ordovician Period lasted almost 45 million years. During this period, most of
the area was almost entirely ocean, and most of the world s land was collected into the southern
supercontinent Gondwana. Throughout the Ordovician, Gondwana was submerged underwater. This
period is best known for its animals, including graptolites, trilobites, brachiopods, and the conodonts.
Plants invaded the land during this period. The most recent types of like animal was tetrahedral spores
that are similar to land plants have been found, suggesting that plants invaded the land at this time.
Later during the period, the Earth experienced a milder climate; the weather was warm and the
atmosphere contained a lot of moisture. Although, when Gondwana finally settled on the South Pole,
massive glaciers formed, and caused shallow seas, and sea levels to drop. This most likely caused
extinctions at the end of the Ordovician in which 60% of all marine invertebrate genera and 25% of all
families went extinct. The ecosystems was still dominized by algae and sponges, and in some cases by
bryozoans. However, there apparently were also periods of complete reef collapse because to global
disturbances. The major global patterns of life went through changes during the Ordovician period.

His sarcastic response shows that Benjy was not a great family member and certainly did not care
about his employee s working environment. Benjy was not kind to Duddy; he favored his brother
Lennie. Benjy believed Lennie would be the successful brother and therefore he did not want to waste
time on his other nephew who was very irritating and unmotivated. All of Lennie s schooling expenses
were paid by Benjy. The large spending habits on Lennie shows that Benjy may have wished he had a
son of his own to father, and that he felt like he needed to fill an empty space in his life. Duddy
becomes very dishonest throughout his career, a trait that was not received by his uncle. Although
Benjy may not be the most thoughtful man, he is brutally honest. When he is ill with cancer, Duddy
confronts him about how he only treated Lennie well. Benjy s response is Let s not pretend.

how Duddy did not think anything compared to having money. He also was extremely unsympathetic

  • 3. Comparing Dante s Inferno and the Movie, What Dreams May... Comparing Dante s Inferno and the Movie, What Dreams May Come The movie s opening scene gives allusions to Dante s own life and his brief courtship with Beatrice. Chris (Robin Williams) begins, When I was young, I met this beautiful girl on a lake, just as Dante had met Beatrice when he was young. This lake just happens to be on the boarder of Switzerland and Italy, Dante s native country. Anna, Chris love, finds him sitting on a hillside overlooking that lake, and that scene will become a major focus for the rest of the movie. They believe that they are soul mates, and unlike Dante and Beatrice, Chris and Anna marry and have two children. Set in modern times, a series of mortal tragedies unlocks a series of immortal ... While standing outside the walls of a city in this heaven, she covers his eyes, just as Virgil does to Dante when faced with Medusa outside Dis, the capital of hell. Dressed in black, instead of his usual saintly white attire, Albert delivers the bad news. Anna, so filled with guilt, has committed suicide, so now she can never join Chris in Heaven. This starts the journey where Chris goes through hell to find his beloved (Like Dante kind of). Even though Albert warns him that this has never been done, Albert lets Chris go because he realizes that they are soul mates, just as Dante thought he and Beatrice were meant to be together. As they prepare to leave heaven, a man who looks like Freud accompanies them. The three of them venture into hell, and they tell Chris to try not to abandon all hope (cf., the inscription over Dante s gate to hell) and try not to lose his mind. They are now on the river Styx, and they enter an artist s rendition of Canto 8. They are pulled off the boat by the dead bodies (cf., the wrathful) trying to attack them in the water. The boat flips over, and they somehow manage to get to shore. I don t remember if the scene I m about to describe occurs before or after the Styx scene. The Rebellious Angels guard Dis in Dante, but here it seems to be guarded by the sinners in Round one of Circle seven: the violent against their neighbors. At this point, Chris realizes that the ... However, it seems that we may only consider the modern architectures constructed nowadays but forget the importance to appreciate those ancient architectures, especially those ancient Chinese architectures we should be proud of. • 5. Why Is Osama Bin Laden Justified The assassination of Osama Bin Laden was justified because he murdered thousands of innocent people, and trained and armed other terrorist organizations. However, some think that his assassination was not justified because he was killing for his religion. We all remember the terrorist attacks of 9/11. It was a bright and sunny morning when a commercial airliner crashed into one of the twin towers. Everyone thought it was an accident, it was all over the news, but in mere seconds, the second plane hit. At that moment, everyone knew what had happened, the most devastating terrorist attack in U.S history had just occurred. By the time everything was said and done, America was confused and filled with rage, and when Osama Bin Laden and his terrorist organization, Al Qaida, claimed responsibility, we were ready for payback. If there is one thing that Toby Keith got right, it s that the US of A does not take kindly to being attacked by terrorists and so, we clashed with our enemies in the Middle East for over a decade, but that s another story. Osama Bin Laden had been conducting terrorist attacks ever since the 90 s, like when the U.S embassy in Kenya was bombed in 1998, but we didn t take action until after we got hit on American soil. The right ventricle pumping blood to the lungs, and the left ventricle pumping blood to the body. There are three types of circulation of the blood. These are pulmonary, systemic and portal circulation. Pulmonary circulation is where the blood is pumped to the lungs. It arrives deoxygenated from the superior and inferior vena cava into the right atrium. It then is pumped through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle. Analysis Of Blackbeard s Life Was Full Of Excitement Thomas Cline Mrs. Gawith English I 26 Jan, 2016 Blackbeard From working for the British on a Privateer then moving to Jamaica and taking up piracy, Blackbeard s life was full of excitement. Once the the sulfur was lit crew members were running to get above on the deck and soon all of the crew members were out in the open gasping for fresh air. The last one to come out was of course Blackbeard. Teach once shot one of his own crewmen over a drunken game of poker. This drug was Thalidomide. Thalidomide is a mutagen, studied in toxicology, in which it causes damage to the chemical material within an embryo when in development. This drug was created in West Germany by a pharmaceutical company, Chemie Grünenthal (Recognition of Thalidomide Defects, n.d.). One example of this was in 1964, a professor named Jacob Sheskin from Hadassah University Hospital had a patient with leprosy. This professor then used thalidomide to help treat it, and the results were successful (Robertson, Jan 11, 2015.). By looking at the image on the right, it can be seen that Thalidomide does bind to the protein CRBN, as recently stated up above. When a carcinogen begins to cause a cancer, thalidomide actually stops the process of the cancer from growing. Similarly, when a baby is growing, thalidomide stops the advancements in the body, creating a negative outcome. But when thalidomide is taken when negative advancements are already occurring like cancer, it is helpful to stop them. This is a great example to show that Thalidomide should remain on the market to help people with certain conditions. However, there should be rules set into place. For example, if a person doesn t want to have any more kids, then they should be able to take thalidomide as they won t be affected. Thalidomide only affects the baby when it is developing, so it should be perfectly fine for the mother to take it if she is done having kids. (Strong, Jan. 11, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Time Management Within The Military Time management plays a vital role in each and every unit with the United States Army and it affects how quickly they can respond to problems when they arise. Time management encompasses just about everything in the Army. From Senior Non Commissioned Officers (SNCO) making sure their soldiers are in the right place at the right time by tracking all their soldiers appointments and duties or the squad leaders and other Non Commissioned Officers making sure that maintenance is being completed on time so the aircraft are ready to fly, and making sure that soldiers are ready for their flights for the day all the way down to the lower enlisted soldier making sure he or she is on time and ready to complete their day. These are the just a few of the things that time management encompasses within the military. So what is time management? Time management is a skill that needs to learned or if need be taught to every soldier within the ranks. Imagine a unit that has no time management skills. Soldiers are late for flights, they miss appointments and in turn receive article fifteens, Senior Non Commissioned Officers are being scolded by their First Sergeants for not being able to properly track their soldiers which in turn falls downhill to the squad leaders. Mathematicians, in turn, have been fascinated by these special numbers for over two thousand years. The Hindu Arabic base 10 system we use today was inspired by the Chinese method of decimals which was actually around 10000 years old. Decimals may have been around for a very long time, but what about recurring decimals? In fact the ancient Greeks were one of the first to deal with recurring decimals. The Greek mathematician Zeno had a paradox in which the answer was a finite number that was a sum of an infinite sequence. The answer to his problem was a recurring decimal, and it definitely would not be the last time recurring decimals played ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What about the number n ? Can the period of the number 1/n be found also? These questions are what I hope to answer in my project. Before utilizing mathematical resources, I decided to approach my problem from scratch and just experiment with numbers on a lazy Sunday morning. The patterns I encountered when working with these numbers were stunning; to keep things simple, I started with small numbers as denominators. Soon enough, I realized that the primes 2 and 5 do not produce any recurring decimals. 3 only provides one repeating digit, and yet 9 does too. The number 7 produces 6 repeating digits, but the number 11 only produces two digits. What is going on here? Well, it appears that some primes p have p 1 repeating digits, but not all of them. However, all primes except 2 and 5 seem to have a period that is (p 1)/n long, where n is some integer. What about the squares of primes? I would like to give the example of 3; although 9 (3x3) has the same number of repeating digits as 3 (1), 27 actually has three repeating digits. Even more stunning, 81 (3^4) has nine repeating digits. It appears as if as the number is raised by a power of 3, then the number of repeating digits is also raised to some power. The number 3 is actually an exception to the general rule that I will mention, and the repeating digits of 3 to the nth power is just 3^(n 2). Peking man could walk upright, create fire, and possessed the ability to make stone tools, but it wasn t until 2183 BCE that the vestiges of China truly began to emerge. The Yellow River, the cradle of the Chinese civilization, flooded regularly, and King Shun appointed his minister Yu to rectify that problem. The Shang exhibited extremely high quality workmanship and advancement in the working of things other than bronze, including jade and pottery. They were the most advanced bronze working civilization in the world at the time. Most of what is known about the earliest vestiges of the Shang culture is derived from remains of the Shang in Anyang, which was founded by King Pan Geng in 1320 BCE. The oracle bones gave the names of at least eighteen kings before Pan Geng, and according to tradition, the Shang had moved their capital five times before finally settling at Anyang.2 Anyang was conquered by Zhou armies led by King Wu in 1050 BCE in the Battle of Muye. King Wen founded the Zhou dynasty, but it was his son, Wu, who became the first king to take the title Son of Heaven . He established the political concept of a Mandate of Heaven, which claimed that kings ruled with the sanction of the gods. If a king proved corrupt, cruel, or just incompetent, it then became appropriate for another family to overthrow the corrupt dynasty and take the throne under a new Mandate of Heaven.3 Under the Zhou dynasty, a feudal form of government became the political institution, with landlords becoming vassals to the emperor. Such an alliance system was vulnerable and extremely dependent on the loyalties of the regional landlords. In 1042 BCE, Wu was succeeded by his young son, Cheng. Cheng s uncle, the Duke of Zhou, became regent. The Duke of Zhou oversaw government ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Comparison of Two Mathematics Curricula Comparison of Two Mathematics Curricula Math teachers have become increasingly disenchanted with the traditional materials they are forced to teach due to the existing California standards. The goal of the teachers is not that they need to change the standards, but there needs to be a better curriculum to adequately bring students up to those standards. Current curricula follow the letter of the standards that California has implemented, but they sometimes seem to be based on nothing substantial which would give credibility to the course of study. If a curriculum is developed to meet a set of standards, that is exactly what it will do. However, the goal should be to not only meet but to exceed the stated standards; or, at the very least, give students the ability to go beyond the standard. In this argument, the California standards are the lowest rung of the ladder that the state should encourage students to climb. Yes, the student will have a basic understanding of mathematical concepts if they meet the standard, but they will not have any impetus to reach beyond that and achieve something more. In this research paper, two different curricula possibilities are examined for their relative merits; one which is meant to just meet the recommended California mathematics standard as set forth by the Common Core State Standards Initiative (2005), and one which is recommended by a practical body, the National Science Foundation (NSF), to encourage students to achieve a higher, ... • 17. Essay on Narrative Style and Structure of James and the... Narrative Style and Structure of James and the Giant Peach The books that Roald Dahl has written have very interesting narrative styles. In the story James and the Giant Peach, Dahl uses vivid imagination. He uses many imaginary situations but yet at the same time encompasses enough realistic situations that the reader can still relate to it. In James and the Giant Peach, it starts out introducing a boy named James Henry Trotter who lives with his loving mother and father. The narrator of the book tells us, the readers, that James and his family s dream is to sail to New York City and climb all the way to the top of the Empire State Building. This introduction makes us think that this story is realistic, because the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These bugs carry on many different human like characteristics, which help make Dahl s imaginative story seem somewhat realistic. All of these bugs talk to James about how they hate life on the hill and a bug eats away the stem of the peach and they go rolling down the hill. Throughout the story the peach, with all of the characters inside, is on a dangerous adventure. After going through oceans and winds, the peach lands them on the top of the Empire State Building. The bugs help capture the evil aunts and they live happily together. This story is told in the third person point of view, which helps the reader understand the whole story and not just one character s side. If the story was told by just one character s point of view, the story could be similar but one would only see the view of that character. By Dahl using third person point of view, this allows the readers to see each characters views and thoughts of what is happening in the story. Also, throughout the book Dahl has the narrator asking many questions to make the reader imagine what is going to happen next. Usually the question comes toward the end of a page so the reader has to wonder or is caught in suspense until the page is flipped. This gives the reader a chance to use their imagination and guess what happens next. I believe this sort of writing helps Dahl pull his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What Are The Four Books Of The New Testament Books of the New Testament The Bible is made complete by the New Testament because many things that were prophesied in the Old Testament manifest in it. Hip Bursitis Research Paper Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome The medical definition of bursitis is an inflammation or irritation of the bursa, which is a small, fluid filled sac found in articulation. Inflammation occurs from the decrease of friction of the bursa between the bones, muscles, and skin. Bursitis can be an acute or chronic condition. Acute bursitis are often a result from an infection or injury, while chronic bursitis are caused by long periods of repetitive motion or use of the affected joint. The most common sites include the elbow, hip, shoulder, knee, heel and even the base of the big toe. Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (formally known as Trochanteric Bursitis, or GTPS for short) is a hip bursitis which distresses the superficial trochanteric bursa located over the greater trochanter of the femur. • 20. Literary Devices In The Stranger, By Albert Camus In the novel, The Stranger, by Albert Camus, Camus uses a variety of literary devices in order to create a moment of inward reflection from readers, in which we reflect on just how absurd our existence is. Camus expresses his critique through one major character, Meursault, and a few minor characters as well. Camus s use of irony pushed readers to look beyond the surface, and come to the conclusion of where the irony was displayed. Camus also made use of ironic moments in order to contrast the expectations of society, to how Meursault differs from that, all to gradually expose the hypocrisy of mankind. Camus generally uses this literary device in order make us evaluate our own selves and more importantly to display the fact that we as people can be truly happy, only if we accept our fate, instead of fighting it. In a way, he s suggesting we be more like Meursault. Examples of this would be the funeral caretaker insisting that Meursault view his mother s body, and Meursault continuously refusing. Camus does this to make people think: what exactly is wrong with Meursault not wanting to see his dead mother? Through this technique camus shows societal expectations of how people are supposed to mourn lost, and certain responses to lost are deemed abnormal. Thus Meursault s lack of grief automatically made him an outsider. Other uses of irony can be shown through Meursault s interactions with the chaplain, and the authority involved in his criminal case played out later on in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I heard a variety of answers from different students. He went on to say that we give up certain freedoms when we go into different places because everyone has differing beliefs about how things should work. He continued by saying that if we have a problem with the way Samford is run or what they are making us do then we can leave because it is not our job to tell them how to govern, but to find a place that lines up with how we think a place should ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to understand this more completely, Aristotle says, For even if the end is the same for a single man and for a state, that of the state seems at all events though it is worth while to attain the end merely for one man, it is finer and more godlike to attain it for a nation or for city states (Nicomachean Ethics, 66). Aristotle believes that the state and the individual should work hand in hand to be successful. Also, he believes that a human s natural desire is to be happy. Therefore, if the government and the individual were working hand in hand then both parties should be happy. People are born to be governed, he argues. According to Aristotle, laws should express human nature. The laws should line up with what we believe. Aristotle also points out that there is no such thing as personal morality. Therefore, no need to challenge the authority of the government. Parts of Aristotle s view agree with what the person I interviewed said about this question, but other parts do not. Islam and Great Sectarian Divide Bottom of Form * Brothers at war FOR two sects united by their belief in one Maker, one Book and one Prophet, the amount of blood spilt in the name of their respective faiths by Shias and Sunnis is truly staggering. Since the earliest days of Islam in the 7th century when the schism first tore the young Muslim community apart, the two sects have been warring incessantly. In Syria, the minority Alewites have ruled since the Seventies. In Sunni Saudi Arabia, the Shias are marginalised. Indeed, in a recent Pew Institute survey on attitudes in the Muslim world, only 53 per cent of those surveyed in Pakistan considered Shias to be Muslims. This figure is even lower in several other Muslim countries. There is similar doubt on the other side, with many Shias casting doubt on Sunni beliefs. So clearly, time has only sharpened this schism, rather than healing old wounds. But while more often than not, these tensions are limited to neighbourhoods and nations, the emergence of a Shia theocracy in Iran has taken these differences to a new level. Although mediaeval Islam saw states engaging in sectarian warfare, this tendency was later suppressed in modern times, as we have just discussed. However, although the Iran Iraq war was fought over territorial claims and counter claims, overtly sectarian symbolism was deployed by both sides. And when the Americans invaded Iraq in 2003, the ruling Baath Party was ousted, and the minority Sunnis displaced from power. This led to a Shia revival, and a major gain in Iranian influence. Throughout this essay I am going to be breaking down these two stories to find what sort of similarities and differences they contain. A similarity? They are both fictional stories. A difference? One takes place in a Sci fi and futuristic setting, while the other takes place in a more modern, or possibly older time frame. Although two stories can have a similar overall genre, they may have a different and more specific genre. A good example of this is the stories, The Interlopers and The Machine That Won The War. • 26. Romeo And Juliet Deaths Romeo and Juliet, the Shakespearean playwright of two star crossed lovers, ends in two tragic deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. Who can be hold responsible for their deaths, when so many things went wrong along the way? Many could be held responsible for the deaths of the two lovers, but Romeo himself deserves to carry the heavier load of responsible for not only his death, but the death of his lover, Juliet as well. The young boy s acts of irresponsibility, impulse, belligerence, immaturity, and streak of bad decisions only brought definite consequences to both himself and Juliet. As the story of Romeo and Juliet further progresses, Romeo s true character becomes more and more apparent; he seems to act solely by impulse. Romeo acts moreso with his emotions, and sudden thoughts than his brain which stores reason and logic. This causes for tragedy and unfortunate circumstance by the end of the poem. This shows how impulsive he is in most of his decisions and how he tends to be very dramatic in everything that he does. When Romeo discovers that Juliet is dead, he almost immediately dramatically decides to drink poison, to kill himself. Here s to love, O true apothecary, thy drugs are quick thus with a kiss I die. Which shows how quickly he makes wrash and dramatic decisions without thinking it through. If Romeo had not been so careless and impulsive in his decision, Juliet would have awoken and they would both still be alive. Romeo is also extremely short tempered and belligerent. Often, Romeo resorts to violence when conflict occurs, he is quick to act out of rage. This goes hand in hand with how impulsive and irresponsible he is, which further supports that he was responsible for him and Juliet s death. Romeo kills Paris out of rage and fury, as violence has become a natural instinct or reaction for him. Romeo killed Tybalt as well, over a simple joke. That is two lives that Romeo himself his responsible for taking, is it hard to believe he could be responsible for his own as well as Juliet s, due to what we ve seen him capable of over the course of the story.
