Comparison of Two Mathematics Curricula Math teachers have become increasingly disenchanted
with the traditional materials they are forced to teach due to the existing California standards. The goal
of the teachers is not that they need to change the standards, but there needs to be a better curriculum
to adequately bring students up to those standards. Current curricula follow the letter of the standards
that California has implemented, but they sometimes seem to be based on nothing substantial which
would give credibility to the course of study. If a curriculum is developed to meet a set of standards,
that is exactly what it will do. However, the goal should be to not only meet but to exceed the stated
standards; or, at the very least, give students the ability to go beyond the standard. In this argument,
the California standards are the lowest rung of the ladder that the state should encourage students to
climb. Yes, the student will have a basic understanding of mathematical concepts if they meet the
standard, but they will not have any impetus to reach beyond that and achieve something more. In this
research paper, two different curricula possibilities are examined for their relative merits; one which is
meant to just meet the recommended California mathematics standard as set forth by the Common

These bugs carry on many different human like characteristics, which help make Dahl s imaginative
story seem somewhat realistic. All of these bugs talk to James about how they hate life on the hill and
a bug eats away the stem of the peach and they go rolling down the hill. Throughout the story the
peach, with all of the characters inside, is on a dangerous adventure. After going through oceans and
winds, the peach lands them on the top of the Empire State Building. The bugs help capture the evil
aunts and they live happily together.
This story is told in the third person point of view, which helps the reader understand the whole story
and not just one character s side. If the story was told by just one character s point of view, the story
could be similar but one would only see the view of that character. By Dahl using third person point of
view, this allows the readers to see each characters views and thoughts of what is happening in the
story.
Also, throughout the book Dahl has the narrator asking many questions to make the reader imagine
what is going to happen next. Usually the question comes toward the end of a page so the reader has to
wonder or is caught in suspense until the page is flipped. This gives the reader a chance to use their

In the novel, The Stranger, by Albert Camus, Camus uses a variety of literary devices in order to
create a moment of inward reflection from readers, in which we reflect on just how absurd our
existence is. Camus expresses his critique through one major character, Meursault, and a few minor
characters as well. Camus s use of irony pushed readers to look beyond the surface, and come to the
conclusion of where the irony was displayed. Camus also made use of ironic moments in order to
contrast the expectations of society, to how Meursault differs from that, all to gradually expose the
hypocrisy of mankind. Camus generally uses this literary device in order make us evaluate our own
selves and more importantly to display the fact that we as people can be truly happy, only if we accept
our fate, instead of fighting it. In a way, he s suggesting we be more like Meursault. Examples of this
would be the funeral caretaker insisting that Meursault view his mother s body, and Meursault
continuously refusing. Camus does this to make people think: what exactly is wrong with Meursault

This is an often overlooked freedom because one may forget that this freedom is not a freedom that

The Interlopers and The Machine That Won The War are two different short stories that heavily push
the themes of irony and suspense and although they may share these similarities I believe that they
also have many differences. Throughout this essay I am going to be breaking down these two stories
to find what sort of similarities and differences they contain. A similarity? They are both fictional
stories. A difference? One takes place in a Sci fi and futuristic setting, while the other takes place in a
more modern, or possibly older time frame.
Although two stories can have a similar overall genre, they may have a different and more specific
genre. A good example of this is the stories, The Interlopers and The Machine That Won The War.
Both of these stories are works of fiction, none of the events that take place in either of them are real.
On closer inspection we realize that although they are both fiction, they are different types of fiction.
The Interlopers is a mystery. The story starts by explaining that in time past two neighboring families
went to court over they strip of land between them, to find out which family owned it. When they
court reached their decision and chose which family won, they losing family, frustrated that they didn
t get the land, started a rivalry that would last generations. They mystery? Who are they families and

Under society s customs for decades, young women have been put under the pressure and anticipation
to have perfect bodies. That is, thin and curved, beautified by applying pounds of makeup to their face
but not appear ridiculously overdone. Who s responsible for these standards imposed on young
women? When a young girl picks up the model along the cover of Vogue being called flawless, it s
easy for her to then aspire to be a real life imitation of the photocopy. These companies produce
magazine covers shown with girls images daily. As if keeping the perfect body wasn t hard enough our
culture also forces girls into the forever expanding world of composition, however, body image is a
surging subject for young women. Advertisements and pictures of lean female models are all over.

Romeo and Juliet, the Shakespearean playwright of two star crossed lovers, ends in two tragic deaths
of both Romeo and Juliet. Who can be hold responsible for their deaths, when so many things went
wrong along the way? Many could be held responsible for the deaths of the two lovers, but Romeo
himself deserves to carry the heavier load of responsible for not only his death, but the death of his
lover, Juliet as well. The young boy s acts of irresponsibility, impulse, belligerence, immaturity, and
streak of bad decisions only brought definite consequences to both himself and Juliet. As the story of
Romeo and Juliet further progresses, Romeo s true character becomes more and more apparent; he
seems to act solely by impulse. Romeo acts moreso with his emotions, and sudden thoughts than his
brain which stores reason and logic. This causes for tragedy and unfortunate circumstance by the end
of the poem. This shows how impulsive he is in most of his decisions and how he tends to be very
dramatic in everything that he does. When Romeo discovers that Juliet is dead, he almost immediately
dramatically decides to drink poison, to kill himself. Here s to love, O true apothecary, thy drugs are
quick thus with a kiss I die. Which shows how quickly he makes wrash and dramatic decisions
without thinking it through. If Romeo had not been so careless and impulsive in his decision, Juliet

goes hand in hand with how impulsive and irresponsible he is, which further supports that he was

Duddy as an Anti Hero In his novel, The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, Mordecai Richler portrays
the character of Duddy as an anti hero. Richler develops Duddy in this way through close relationships
with other characters and family members. Various negative traits of Duddy were shown in his
business career as well. Mordecai Richler developed the character of Duddy as an anti hero to
highlight complexity in individual people.
