A Study Of Fiction Can Teach Society Lessons And Provide...
The study of fiction can teach society lessons and provide warnings against past mistakes from
happening again. Acts of genocide and similar atrocities are devastating and unnecessary acts of
hatred in the world. Between the years of 1939 and 1945 was one of the world s largest acts of hatred
against a group of people the Holocaust. In just the span of six years in Germany, approximately
eleven million people were killed, six million of them were Jewish. Thirty years after the end of the
Holocaust, from 1975 to 1979, was a similar act of mass murder in Cambodia the Cambodian
Genocide by the rebel communist group, the Khmer Rouge. It is estimated that between these four
years, approximately four million Cambodians were killed, leaving ... Show more content on

Wiesel belongs to an upper class family with both of his parents being shopkeepers. His parents are
Orthodox Jews, and he spends most of his childhood deeply in his religious studies and practicing his
Jewish religion. Although Wiesel is living in Hungary, his town is still taken over by the Germans, and
thousands of Jewish people are forced to depart and are sent to Auschwitz in 1944. Never Fall Down,
by Patricia McCormick, is a novel that shares Arn Chorn Pond s miraculous survival story during the
Cambodian genocide, and how he manages to move to the United States, spreading the events that
happened in Cambodia to the world. Arn Chorn Pond and his five siblings move in with his aunt after
his parent s opera business collapses. This is due to the death of his father and his mother having to
move away to Phnom Penh in search of money. In 1975 when Arn Chorn Pond is only eleven years
old, the Khmer Rouge enters the city of Battambang, deporting thousands of Cambodians into the
countryside. Elie Wiesel grew up during World War II, witnessing thousands of deaths from battles
and randomly harmed civilians in countries all over Europe. Living in Sighet, Transylvania, which is
now Romania, Wiesel never would have assumed that he would be one of the randomly harmed
civilians, or even worse, a victim of the Holocaust. As the Nazis began to move throughout Europe
near his town of Sighet, Wiesel hears from his close friend

They Things They Carried. Explication
Life in a Warzone
Reading the short story The Things they carried, by Tim O Brien, creates a mesmerizing image of a
war zone. It describes the tough war times for American soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War. The
story is a literary portrayal of the material and mental pressures on the soldiers, who strive to survive
physically and mentally in the war. The things they carried talks about how heavily equipped are
American Soldiers, and how a group of them carried numerous tools and weapons as war materials. It
presents the environment of Lieutenant Jimmy Cross and fellow soldiers. They used to be loaded with
survival goods and weapons all the time during Vietnam War. They carried all possible equipments

In his mindset Jimmy Cross loved Martha. Jimmy Cross would also carry a couple of letters from
Martha as a spiritual symbol of love. Although Jimmy Cross humped his love for Martha, paragraph 3,
they were not lovers. Jimmy Cross would think frequently about Martha as it would take Jimmy into a
fantasy world. These thoughts would ease his mind and gradually increases his love for Martha. With
time passing, thoughts about Martha became more significant in Jimmy Cross s mind and his feelings
also escalated. Jimmy Cross would also imagine sexual experiences with Martha such as in paragraph
5, Cross imagines to have touched her left knee. Martha became a remedy, a cure, or a spiritualized
gorgeous being for Jimmy Cross in the distressing environment of war. The crisp in Jimmy Cross s
imagination came in this story when Jimmy receives a pebble from Martha, as a good luck charm,
before Lavender s death. The pebble for Jimmy became like a materialized spiritual object. It reflected
all the love that Jimmy had for Martha. Paragraph 39 he carried the pebble in his mouth, turning it
with his tongue, tasting the sea salts and moisture. His mind wandered. He had difficulty keeping his
attention on the war. These lines give evidence that the pebble had gained immense substance in the
life of Jimmy Cross. It was actually that he had started worshipping

Forests And Tropical Rainforest
A Rainforest is a dense growing broad leaved evergreen trees it is also known as a tall and strong
jungle. The reason it is called a rainforest is because of the various amount of rainfall that it get in a
year. The climate of a rain forest is very hot and humid so the animals and plants that exist there must
learn to adapt to this climate. Rainforest can be found at places with high biodiversity. Biodiversity is
variety of plant and animal life in the world or in a particular habitat, a high level of which is usually
considered to be important and desirable.
Tropical rainforests are located near the equator as they are have strong biodiversities. 57% of all
tropical rainforests are found in Latin America which is a group of countries and dependencies in
America. 1/3 of the world s hot and humid rainforests are in Brazil. Other tropical rainforests are

Politics In The Gilded Age Essay
Politics in the Gilded Age
Discuss Politics in the Gilded Age. Include major political events and issues, and the roles of the
bloody shirt, corruption, patronage, and reform movements.
The term Gilded Age was named for a Mark Twain book. It meant covered with gold, and was applied
to this period as a whole. This was a period of corruption in sordid politics.
The Republicans and Democrats didn t really have strong opposing beliefs during this period. The
Republicans supported high tariffs and sound money. The Democrats supported lower tariffs and
expanded currency. Both rural and urban classes supported each party. They worked with spoils and
local issues. Both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He had little knowledge of politics, and depended on his fellow politicians. These men, in turn,
involved in scandals to embezzle money from the government. One was the Great Mobilier scandal; it
dealt with the Union Pacific Railroad. The Construction Company hired themselves at inflated prices
to build railroad lines, and distributed shares of stock to congressmen. A scandal during Grant s
second term, was the Whisky Ring. This scandal was uncovered in St. Louis, and consisted of selling
whiskey without the excise tax. In return it defrauded the government out of millions of dollars.
Belknap was selling goods and trading with the Indians for lower prices.
During Grant s administration the monetary issues were inflation, cheap money, and greenbacks. The
debtors, especially farmers, wanted cheap money. However, Grant vetoed the bill to print more money,
and supported withdrawing greenbacks from circulation.
Hayes won the disputed election. Four states submitted irregular returns. It was disputed if the
Republican president of the Senate or the Democratic Speaker of the House should count them. It was
decided that an electoral commission made up of fifteen men. There were eight Republicans and seven
Democrats, so the Republicans won. The Democrats would only accept this with conditions, one of
which was to remove troops from the south.
The next president was a political unknown .

What Is The Decision To Increase The Federal Funds Rate
Article Analysis Just a few days ago, the Federal Reserve increased the federal funds rate from 1.25%
to 1.5%. The federal funds rate is one method that the Federal Reserve uses to control monetary
policy. The other methods used by the Fed to control monetary policy are open market operations, and
the discount window. The federal funds rate is defined as the interest rate that banks charge each other
to lend reserve funds. The federal funds rate is usually than the discount rate so that banks are more
inclined to go to other banks first, rather than the Fed. During the recession in 2008, the federal funds
rate was near 0 in the hopes that banks would lend more, and the economy would be kickstarted.
However, as the effects of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another Mankiw principle that this touches upon is that society faces a short run tradeoff between
inflation and unemployment. Policymakers can intervene with this tradeoff, by using several different
tools and this is one example of that. The unemployment rate is currently at a 17 year low, but the
inflation rate is similarly low. By increasing the federal funds rate, the unemployment rate will
continue to remain low, while an increase in inflation can be expected. Finally, the last Mankiw
principle that the article relates to is that people respond to incentives. Because of the increased
federal funds rate, people may be willing to save more in the hopes that interest rates will increase,
and they will be paid more. At a lower federal funds rate, people may be willing to spend more,
because interest rates will not pay them as much. A concept which we learned in class that this relates
to is monetary policy. While fiscal policy is developed by Congress to change the U.S. economy,
monetary policy is used exclusively by the Federal Reserve. It involves either increasing the money
supply by buying treasury bonds, or lowering the reserve requirement and discount rate. When the
money supply needs to be decreased, the Fed does the opposite of those actions. Another concept that
this relates to is the federal funds market, which is the market that allows banks that fall short of the
reserve requirement to borrow reserves

Walmart Social Issues
What s the social Issue? Throughout me working with Wal Mart s assets protection, I feel as though
equal pay and internals are the two biggest social issues throughout our agency or the store that I
work. It is a Wal Mart policy that we must not discuss our wages whether good or bad to other
employees because everyone doesn t get paid the same amount. This issue mainly comes into place
when people do the same job but get paid differently and coworker start to tell each other about there
hourly wage. Many people may not see this as a social issue however it is a social issue and at least to
my next issue which is internal theft. Internal Theft could be anything including: money, time on the

Store that I work and it is a proximately $190,000 of shrink and most of it can t be explained. They try
to make reports saying is if $190,000 is walking out the doors with customers but I know that there is
no way that shrinks is that high with petty thieves that walk out the door. Theory of Deterrence
Accepting this theory of deterrence apart of internals, can present itself as a role in theft. If there is
anything to deter then we know the problem is there and needs to be fixed. So we know and
understand that employee theft is real and a method that requires some cognitive skills or plan of a
master mind (if done correctly). Because of we really don t know people and their agendas until they
are hired and working for the company it is hard to plan and help internals to decrease. A few ways to
help deter the best way possible are paying attention to the body language of people around you, keep
an open mind and line of communication with everyone about things that go on in the store, also
consider everyone that you work with a suspect (so don t become to buddy buddy.) and have more
cameras than what you need. In my opinion is the best way to deter Internals, is through being present
in the store allowing everyone to know that they are being

Biography of Fidel Castro
Fidel Castro was born on August 13, 1926 in the Bíran, Cuba. (See Figure 5) Fidel grew up in
wealthier circumstances than most Cubans at the time, amid the massive and growing poverty. His
father, Ángel Castro y Argiz, was originally an immigrant from Spain. During Fidel s childhood,
Ángel was a fairly prosperous sugarcane farmer on a farm that had been dominated by United States
owned United Fruit Company. His mother, Lina Ruz Gonzalez, was a maid to Angel s first wife,
during Fidel s infancy. By the time Fidel was fifteen, his father disbanded his first marriage and wed
Lina, who is seen by Fidel to be his true mother. Fidel was educated in private Jesuit boarding schools.

Castro continued to use guerrilla attacks and gained large numbers of radical followers. Using these
guerrilla warfare tactics, Castro became known as the Guerilla Prince and with his supporters, he
attacked Batista s forces, conquering and overtaking numerous towns and cities. Batista quickly lost
much of his popular support and suffered many embarrassing defeats. Finally, on January 1, 1959,
Batista fled Cuba and went into exile, leaving the Cuban government in need of a president and
somebody to get rid of the corruption that had previously plagued the country.
Manuel Urrutia, a very liberal Cuban lawyer and politician, was placed as president of Cuba, and
Castro was placed in charge of the military. However, by July of 1959, Castro had easily and
effectively taken over as leader of Cuba, which he would remain as, for the next four decades. (See
figure 2) With close ties to his brother, Fidel put Raúl in charge of the military, allowing the Castro
family to have most of the control over Cuba. In Castro s beginning years as Cuba s ruler, he made
several radical and significant changes in Cuba, including collectivizing agriculture, nationalizing
industry, and seizing and eliminating most American owned businesses, factories, and farms. Fidel
taxed American products so heavily that U.S. exports halved in just two years, making the United

Essay on The Pact
The Pact Assignment
I found it difficult to relate with the book, The Pact, for near the first half of the story. The three boys,
Rameck, Sam, and George all grew up in impoverished neighborhoods in New Jersey. They were
surrounded by drugs, violence, theft, prejudice, and death. None of the 3 had a father figure within
their home while growing up and discovered that it was extremely difficult to find any positive role
models within their area. As kids, Sam and Rameck both caved under the peer pressure and became
entangled in immoral activity. Rameck had even let adrenaline take over during a fight and stabbed a
man in the thigh with a switchblade. As a result he spent 4 days in jail, some time on house arrest, and

absolute astonishment, my parents, after 2 brief periods of separation and even acquiring divorce
papers, re discovered their love for one another and are now one of the happiest and most secure
couples I know. Even my sister and myself get along great now, often confiding in each other with our
personal issues.
In the Epilogue at the end of the book it clearly states, Friends don t have to be alike to be part of a
pact. The three of us all have distinct personalities that we bring to the mix, (pg. 250, The Pact). I
argue that, in the book they all seem to be the same type of person, Sam and Rameck more so than
George. I often became confused over who was telling the story and which experience was who s.
George had separated himself from the bad crowd, understanding the trouble it could get him into.
Sam and Rameck involved themselves in negativity early on and argue that it was necessary. They had
continually annoyed me for much of the early portions of the book. I have always been my own
person. I functioned separately from the crowd and formed my own opinions and ideas.

that, once again, enforces dangerous stereotypical roles in society for both males and females. Scenes

The Effects Of Post Olympic Games On The Olympics
Bubble economy is the third reason of the valley effect of post Olympic Games. Before the Olympics,
many tourists and company go into the Olympic host country to consume. They will largely promote
this country s development of the construction industry, tourism, services, retail and other industries.
Especially in tourism, the Olympic Games will bring numerous tourists for host city, and these tourists
will consume in the city, and these tourists need pay for food, accommodation, transport, purchase
goods and souvenirs and, some companies and people also will consider purchasing real estate in the
Olympic Village. However, after the end of the Olympics, these tourists will leave the Olympic host
country gradually, causing tourists and consumers reduce in the Olympic host city and the economic
markets shrink.
Because of the above reasons when the Olympics begin, the host country have a considerable
economic development, the construction industry, tourism, services, retail and other industries go into
a few peak. But after the Olympics, consumers leave the city, which lead to a rapid decline of the
economy development. Thus the lacking of consumer lead to a number of economic and social
problems, such as unemployment, poor sales of goods, tourism slump, the real estate bubble.
Especially in tourism, the influence of Olympic economy bubble is the most serious for tourism. A
report from The European Tour Operators Association (ETOA) shows some information. After the

On my honor, I pledge that I have upheld the Honor Code, and that the work I have done on this
assignment has been honest, and that the work of others in this class has, to the best of my knowledge,
been honest as well. The Neverending Story is filled with a world of imagination and creativity and
with imagination, our world can become a land of fantasy. In this paper, creativity and imagination

Imagination is useless without creativity. Anyone can imagine themselves walking down a street;
however, it takes a creative person to imagine walking down a street of an alien planet inhabited by
living Cheetos. This scenario might be considered a little outlandish, yet it takes that extreme
creativity to stand apart from other. Albert Einstein once said, imagination is more important than
knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand while imagination embraces
the entire world and all there ever will be to know and understand. Imagination and creativity benefit
from one another, and one can not achieve greatness without the other.
Imagination and creativity are essential qualities that help innovators have breakthroughs in science,
math, technology, and many other things. To be a creative individual, one must imagine the impossible
and improbable. For example, Michael Endie had to imagine the quicksand that engulfs life if it has
sorrow thoughts. The sand can be directly connected with depression and how, once it has a person, it
constantly drags them down. On the other hand, to be imaginative, an individual must think outside
the parameters of our modern world. For example, in The Neverending Story Tinys had a pet snail for
transport similar to a horse in our world. Michael Endie had

Why Respect Is Important
What Is Respect And Why Is It Importantn?
Respect takes place everywhere we go, the movie theater, school, home, and even restaurants. Respect
is an important aspect of our everyday lives. The definition of respect is having a manner of
admiration, and or politeness towards the person that you have respect for. Respect is something that
holds our entire society together and is visible in many unique ways. Respect holds our society
together because no one could go anywhere or do anything because of all of the chaos spreading
across their town or city. Therefore, there would be vandalism, no laws, and no filter on what anyone
could do. Our nation would fall apart without respect.

For example, in school where more fortunate kids have expensive clothes etc, may not respect and
think they are better than a student that doesn t have all of those nice things that the other student has.
I have witnessed this myself, where one very popular/very wealthy student looks down upon and
doesn t respect another student with not all of the latest trendy clothes that everyone else has. The very
same situation can also happen outside of school very well as inside. For instance, say an average
minimum wage citizen passes a less wealthy man. He might see him and try to avoid him maybe
because he looks down on him and believes he is higher ranking in society. Again, I have also
witnessed this countless times. Unfortunately, this happens quite a bit everywhere, may it be school,
public, work, etc. This can really affect people s social life and or self esteem. My opinion on this
matter is that every public area should reinforce the idea of respect, and they should also do what they
can to provide for less fortunate people and try to put more effort into stopping the respect and

E. E Cummings Essay
Edward Estlin Cummings was an unbelievable great American poet one of the most well versed

language leaving behind the traditions that most poets followed. E. E. Cummings was born on October

Two Views of Violence
Two Views of Violence
It is easy to interpret that the world is more violent today than in the past, when violence is present on
many television and radio channels and dispersed so liberally throughout the internet. The truth of the
matter, however, is that physical violence has always been a part of our lives. Beginning with the first
murder in the Bible by Cain, an early example of violence in literature, physical violence has often
been a part of what one reads. In comparing the novel Maggie: A Girl of the Streets by Stephen Crane,
and the novel Deadwood Dick s Doom by Edward Wheeler, one can see that both novels portray many
types of physical violence, that there is not necessarily a relationship between the physical violence

In retaliation, little Jimmie kicked repeatedly at his father s shins (Crane 44). Most of the main
characters in this novel were uneducated, because they had to start work early in life. This is evident in
their manner of speech. Their lack of education kept them from realizing the effects alcohol has on
violence, and they drank a lot. Every time they drank, they became more violent. Jimmie is happiest,
though, when he has a dollar in his pocket (Crane 47). When he doesn t, he becomes despondent, and
then violent.
When comparing the two novels, however, Deadwood Dick does not make a connection between low
socioeconomic standing, and violence. Piute Dave is a well heeled but notorious young gambler. If
one were to consult a thesaurus, one would see that the antonym for well heeled is poor. One knows
Dave is not poor, also, because he and his band of ruffians did not take long to discover paying dirt
(Wheeler 1). Nevertheless, he and his band are certainly violent. Even the government officials are
cognizant of the lawlessness within the borders of Death Notch, and they hesitate to interfere
(Wheeler 1). With no one to stop them, they continue to fight. Hank Shakespeare, the Poet, is the bully

Industrial Heritage And Its Impact On People s Behavior...
In the dictionary, heritage represents valuable things that have been passed down to descendants. The
behavior of heritage protection is a process of inheritance. Heritage protection not only conserves
precious historical places and objects, but also provides the authentic environments for people to
experience and research history. The valued and diverse heritage can bring a great impact on people s
behavior and feeling.
Industrial heritage, as an essential part of heritage, has become a booming industry in Western
countries. Industrial heritage is the materialized symbol of the development of industrialization in
each country. In 2003, Nizhny Tagil Charter for the Industrial Heritage adopted by The International
Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage. In this charter, the identity of industrial
heritage is confirmed. Industrial heritage not only includes industrial buildings and machinery, but
also contains social activities related to industry.
In China, industrial heritage development is just at the beginning stage. By the year of 2001, the first
industrial heritage was included in the List of National Key Cultural Relics Protection. The protection
of industrial heritage of coal seems to be a new concept. Coal resource is still a very essential energy

Essay on Clinical Uses of Electroencephalogram
CLINICAL USES OF ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAM
An electroencephalogram (EEG) is actually a test to measure the electrical activity of the brain as
recorded from electrodes placed on the scalp. A routine clinical EEG recording typically lasts 20 30
minutes (plus preparation time). An EEG can tell us if there is abnormal electrical activity in the brain
and, in some cases, the types of seizures that someone might be going through. One of the most
common EEG applications is to show the type and location of the activity in the brain during a
seizure. This information can then be used for making the right diagnosis. EEG also useful in the
investigation and management of patients with epilepsy. The presence of epileptiform activity in the

Nevertheless, the EEG reflects the function of the brain and is therefore a complement, rather than an
inconsequential alternative, to these newer procedures. The third major use of electroencephalography
is in the investigation of patients with certain neurologic disorders that produce characteristic EEG
abnormalities which, although nonspecific, help to suggest, establish, or support the diagnosis. These
abnormalities are exemplified well by the repetitive slow wave complexes sometimes seen in herpes
simplex encephalitis, which should suggest this diagnosis if the complexes are found in patients with
an acute cerebral illness. The electrical findings are best regarded as one more physical sign, however,
and as such should be evaluated in conjunction with the other clinical and laboratory data. A further
use of electroencephalography one that may increase in importance with the development of
quantitative techniques for assessing the data that are obtained is in the screening or monitoring of
patients with metabolic disorders, because it provides an objective measure of the improvement or
deterioration that may precede any change in the clinical state of the patient. Electroencephalography
is also an important means of evaluating patients with a change in

Beethoven s Sixth Symphony
Beethoven s Sixth Symphony He (Beethoven) was a pivotal figure in the transition from 18th century
musical classicism to 19th century romanticism, and his influence on subsequent generations of
composers was profound Kerman and Tyson. Beethoven s sixth symphony (also known as the pastoral
symphony) has qualities of both the classical and romantic periods and illustrates Beethoven s
revolutionary ideas as well as highlights his classical influences. The programmatic nature of the piece
is the dominant romantic feature although the use of brass and percussion as well as the dramatic
dynamic changes are also characteristics from this era. However there are many classical influences in
Beethoven s work such as the balanced phrasing, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He creates this dance like feel in a variety of ways. Firstly, the 2/4 time signature makes the music feel
upbeat compared to the 4/4 time signature of the rest of the piece. Secondly, the sforzando accent on
the first beat of every bar drives the music onwards. Also the catchy, short and rhythmic melody is
lively and metronomic. Finally the fiddle like manner in which the violins play creates a sense of a
dance. There are unexpected changes and dramatic dynamic changes throughout the trio which are
both romantic qualities. The fact that this movement moves seamlessly into the next is also romantic.
The fourth movement is titled thunderstorm and is a romantic movement. It is in episodic form (a
format of the romantic period). It is extremely programmatic. The movement depicts a thunderstorm
through the use of the timpani that creates the rumble of the thunder and the punctuated sforzando
chords that create a harsh lightning (for example in bar 21). These programmatic features are romantic
traits and show Beethoven s ability to push the boundaries of the style he was contained to. The use of
percussion and brass in a dominant role is also a romantic feature. There are multiple dramatic
dynamic changes throughout the movement ranging from pianissimo to fortissimo, which is unusual
for the classical period. The movement also exercises dissonance and the melody is unresolved, a

Intrusion Detection System ( Ids )
Abstract Increasing attacks and intrusion of the Internet and computer systems necessitate the need for
Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to prevent attacks. Genetic Algorithm (GA) is applied to support
IDS. Fitness function and GA operators crossover, mutation, and population representation play an
important role in improving the performance of an IDS: high detection rate, and low false positive
rate. This paper suggests a Fitness Function using Reward Penalty technique that rewards the good
chromosome and penalizes the bad chromosome, for improved performance. We suggest that the GA
parameters be optimized for better IDS performance.
Keywords Intrusion detection; genetic algorithm; fitness function; detection rate; false positive rate.
I. INTRODUCTION
Intrusion can be defined as the actions that attempt to compromise the integrity, confidentiality, or
availability of a computer resource [1]. Intrusion Detection System is a software or device to discover
the intrusion activity. Based on detection process, IDS can be classified into two groups: Anomaly
detection, and misuse/signature detection. Anomaly detection looks for rare or unusual network
activities, while misuse/signature detection uses past well known attack patterns signature to identify
illegal activities. This paper deals with only misuse/signature detection in computer networks.
Network attack types can be categorized into the following groups:
Denial of Service Attack (DoS): A DoS attack makes the computer

Women In Beowulf Essay
The Hero s of Beowulf
After reading Beowulf, critics all over have disputed weather women in the book had a role in such a
masculine and brutal environment and time period. The argument is most likely due to the hero being
a male, thus minimizing woman s roles. Though their appearance is limited through out the play, we
can discover they have significant importance still. In this essay, I will offer insight on several women
and their significance in Beowulf, providing evidence of how they do serve a central role. A number of
women revealed in the play are: Wealtheow, Hygd, Hildeburh, Freawaru, Thyrth and Grendal s
mother. Within this elite group of women are two queens known as Hygd and Wealtheow. Both are
wedded to kings which, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Following Grendal s death, Wealtheow gives a celebratory speech to Hrothgar and then Beowulf. She
makes sure that Beowulf does not become the heir, and tries to make Hrothulf inherit this position.
This goes to show that she is looking out for herself by not letting someone from outside the family
take over. Hrothgar does not have any further imput and does not dispute the suggestion, thus
suggesting she has some influence on the king. When she addresses Beowulf, she tells him to accept
the gift she gives to him. Through this gesture we can suggest that she is a great hostess. Also, in Old
English, noble women tended to give gifts which showed reciprocity. To finish off her speech, she
reveals confidence as she says the noble men, having drunk, will do as I ask. (652)
This line strongly suggests her dominance in the kingdom. Yet again, we see political power among
women when Hygd tries to pass the kingdom onto Beowulf. After his death, she steps in and tries to
make important decisions that her late husband would have made. These examples all show that these
women in the play are not benign at all. These women host men in the hall, give gifts, and even have a

United States Government Essay
United States Government
The United States has a deeply rooted and embedded tradition through the Constitution of having a
federalist style of governing as its structural framework for operating and guiding the government of
the country. The form of governing is best described as a balance between powers of the central
government and the powers of each independent and autonomic state. Federalism is a system in which
the power to govern is shared between national and provincial (state) governments, creating what is
often called a federation (Wikipedia 1).This style of governance has not been the only structure
instituted in American history in order to implement civilized law and order among the people of the

The decision by a nation of people to implement one of the three main forms of government,
confederacy, unitary, or federalism, is an important aspect in defining the nature and role of
government in the lives of its citizens. Confederacies exist as a group of autonomous individual states,
regions, or member components who form a national body, or centralized government, to represent
their independent interests at a more regional and international level. The existence of the national
government is derived from the consent of each governed autonomous state or region. The entities that
submit to this central ruling authority are able to withdraw from the compact that binds them together.
The national authority created is only bestowed with the powers, authority, and privileges which the
independent components in the confederacy allow. If any member component feels its interests are no
longer being served or the compact has interfered with its autonomy, then that entity of the
confederacy can sever its ties with the national body. This can occur because the state, region, or
member component has the supreme ultimate authority over its own affairs. As further examination
and analysis will demonstrate there is no inherent authority invested into the national government as is
the case of a federalist system. The most relevant examples of a

The Nba Makes A Profit
The NBA makes a profit in many ways, for example the NBA makes millions of dollars off of
sponsorships, television contracts and selling merchandise. The National Basketball Association
recently signed a new TV agreement with TNT and ESPN to approximately make $2.6 billion per
season. Even with a total of 400 or so odd active players making an average of close to $5 million
annually, national TV contracts generate enough revenue to cover salaries and then some.
This graph depicts league revenue of the National Basketball Association from the 2001/02 season to
the 2014/15 season (Statistica, 2016). As seen the chart above clearly indicates the NBA makes a
profit and has been gradually increasing throughout the years, except for the season of 2011/12 but
that s because the season was shorted due to the lockout that had taken place.
The NBA has many different sponsors. Sponsorship spending On the NBA Totals $739 Million in

become the most active category sponsoring the NBA. Insurance companies are five times more likely
to sponsor professional basketball than the average of all sponsors, according to the research. Auto and

In paragraph eight, Emerson explains that one of the influences on man is nature. The people and
events of the time period can effect how a person thinks. The nature around Man Thinking can also be
the society that the person is in. In society today, people tend to be put into groups. Emerson goes on
to explain that the mind is tyrannized over by its own unifying instinct , meaning that people want to
belong, and by wanting to belong, they change who they are so that they conform to the standards of
society. Man Thinking is the person who steps out of the box that society has put them in and refuses
to accept the role that they have been giving. Instead of accepting everything that people say and do,
Man Thinking ask, Why? , while Delegated Thinking does the exact opposite. Delegated Thinking
accepts everything, they do not step past the boundary. The little box that society has place them in
remains intact. Man Thinking is the leader, they show the way and create new paths, not just for
themselves, but for others, while Delegated Thinking follows the path, they look at it as the truth and
the only way to get around the obstacle. An example of Delegated Thinking would be someone who
drops out of school because society has lead them to believe that they cannot be successful in life.

Enron And Corporate Culture Of Enron
Introduction
In 1985 The Enron Corporation came into existence after a successful merger between two gas
pipeline companies. The company nurtured a very competitive culture, which encouraged employees
to win at any means necessary. Enron s culture led employees to cast loyalty and ethics aside in favor
of high performance (Ferrell, p. 494). The executives of Enron covered up their increasing debt by
using special purpose entities. Meanwhile, Enron continued to report increasing profits to their
investors, which led to more investors giving Enron their money. There were many factors that aided
Enron in their demise, but the largest was the greed of Enron s executives, the auditors, and the
attorneys. The corporate culture of Enron, their auditors bankers and attorneys and their Chief
Financial Officer played vital roles in the fall of Enron.
How did the corporate culture of Enron contribute to its bankruptcy?
In its wake, Enron s CEO, Ken Lay, wanted Enron to be a company which cultivated a culture that
allowed employees the opportunity to reach their full potential. Lay wanted to make Enron a company
that had high integrity and moral values, but as time progressed Enron became a company which
pushed its integrity aside to engage in fraudulent behavior so that the executives could earn more

Life Of A First Generation College Student
My time spent at Cogswell Polytechnical College has been one of a great experience thus, making me

such a prestigious university. There is no one in my family to have made it this far academically as I

nine siblings to identify as a college student raises a lot of concern from the adults of the family as
well as intrapersonal stress. The annual income my family lives off of could be considered at poverty
level, therefore financials are allocated properly by priority with my education not being one of them.
Just as society views eighteen to be the threshold of adulthood, so do my parents. Consequently, I am

stress of wondering if Cogswell will just one day become too expensive for me to attend. When

The Mitchell Museum Of The American Indian Essay
The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian is located at 3001 Central Street in Evanston, Illinois.
The museum s main purpose is not only to educate the public about American Indians, but also to
deconstruct stereotypes and give tribal members something along the lines of a safe place where they
are welcome to embrace their ethnicity. One factor that showcases the information I previously stated
is the fact that tribal members have free admission into the museum. Another way the museum salutes
the ethnicity of American Indians is by commemorating Native individuals alive today. Names of
famous Native Americans are displayed along with their contributions to the ethnic group. One of the
people displayed is Sarah Deer, who is a professor and lawyer that fought for Tribal Jurisdiction. Upon
arrival, I was informed that the museum is divided by Tribes and the regions in which each tribe was
located. The museum is divided into Alaska/Canada, Northwest Coast, Southwest, Plains, and
Woodlands. The reason I think it is divided this way is so that every person who visits has the ability
to learn about each region of tribes separately. It is easy to make assumptions that Native Americans
were all the same, but the truth is that they were all unique. Each tribe has their own customs,
clothing, food, and ways of life. Another captivating aspect of the museum are their display cases,
filled with pottery and artifacts of each tribe. The Alaska/Canada region includes tribes like the

Strange Fruit The song Strange Fruit was first recorded by the famous jazz singer Billie Holiday and

that carry a huge strength, and haunt you even when the song is over. The juxtaposition of the
beautiful landscape, the scent of flowers, with the blood of human beings brutally beaten, gives a
powerful and poignant felling to the song. The song exposes the brutality of racism in America, and

Billie Holiday, perhaps the greates singer in the jazz history, delivers a soul emptying vocal lament
over a groove as deep and dark as the history of lynching itself. In Holiday s unforgettable singing we
can hear all the rage and resignation, the sorrow and determination, the bitterness and hope, as if her
voice could carry the full emotional burden of the long and conflicted history of race in America. The
song is heartbraking. The song is simple in its structure, having only three stanzas and 12 lines. The
lines follow a rhyme pattern, where in each consecutive pair of lines has their ending thyming with
each other. Stange Fruit describes the scene of a lynching of a Black American and its resemblance to

Mass Markets and Mass Production
In today s world, Mass Markets have lost its appeal. The time where mass production of goods and
services for all customers are long gone. Mass Marketing is paving way for Niche Marketing using
more personalised approach. Mass Markets as we know are large unsegmented or undifferentiated
market where products and services are offered to every consumer using mass marketing techniques.
On the other hand, Mass Marketing is referred to as the market coverage approach where companies
use one particular idea on the entire mass market.
The focus of Mass Markets is gradually shifting towards Niche Markets. Such markets mainly focus
on particular products to a much defined audience unlike mass markets. The product is customised
and made according to customers needs hence the customer is also ready pay for their preferred
product.
One of the examples of such mass markets was Coca Cola. Around the 1880 s, Asa Griggs Candler
bought the rights of Coca Cola originally from John Pemberton. He made unique changes to its
packaging and logo to attract its customers. He sold Coca Cola through huge advertising spending to
the mass audience becoming the first person to use this technique of mass marketing which made
Coca Cola one the most successful brands in the soft drinks sector.
The concept of mass markets first came into existence during the Second World War. During this time,

invested $553 billion, representing 39% of global OFDI, compared with only 12% at the beginning of
the 2000 (UNCTAD, 2014). These trends are consistent across different emerging market sub regions,
as organisations that are aggressively investing are doing so not only from large emerging economies
like China, India, Brazil, and Russia but also from a number of new emerging economies in Asia,
Latin America and Africa (Gammeltoft, Pradhan, Goldstein, 2010; Goldstein Bonaglia, 2007).
Emerging markets (EM) are seen generally as low income, rapid growth countries using economic
liberalisation as their primary engine of growth (Hoskisson et al., 2000). The economic liberalisation
or open policies adopted by these emerging markets during the last two decades has led organisations
from these economies to internationalize or seek markets abroad. Emerging markets are known to be
heterogeneous in their level of development and environmental surroundings (Bianchi, 2014). Each
manifests different starting points or different stages of

  • 2. A Study Of Fiction Can Teach Society Lessons And Provide... The study of fiction can teach society lessons and provide warnings against past mistakes from happening again. Acts of genocide and similar atrocities are devastating and unnecessary acts of hatred in the world. Between the years of 1939 and 1945 was one of the world s largest acts of hatred against a group of people the Holocaust. In just the span of six years in Germany, approximately eleven million people were killed, six million of them were Jewish. Thirty years after the end of the Holocaust, from 1975 to 1979, was a similar act of mass murder in Cambodia the Cambodian Genocide by the rebel communist group, the Khmer Rouge. It is estimated that between these four years, approximately four million Cambodians were killed, leaving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Wiesel belongs to an upper class family with both of his parents being shopkeepers. His parents are Orthodox Jews, and he spends most of his childhood deeply in his religious studies and practicing his Jewish religion. Although Wiesel is living in Hungary, his town is still taken over by the Germans, and thousands of Jewish people are forced to depart and are sent to Auschwitz in 1944. Never Fall Down, by Patricia McCormick, is a novel that shares Arn Chorn Pond s miraculous survival story during the Cambodian genocide, and how he manages to move to the United States, spreading the events that happened in Cambodia to the world. Arn Chorn Pond and his five siblings move in with his aunt after his parent s opera business collapses. This is due to the death of his father and his mother having to move away to Phnom Penh in search of money. In 1975 when Arn Chorn Pond is only eleven years old, the Khmer Rouge enters the city of Battambang, deporting thousands of Cambodians into the countryside. Elie Wiesel grew up during World War II, witnessing thousands of deaths from battles and randomly harmed civilians in countries all over Europe. Living in Sighet, Transylvania, which is now Romania, Wiesel never would have assumed that he would be one of the randomly harmed civilians, or even worse, a victim of the Holocaust. As the Nazis began to move throughout Europe near his town of Sighet, Wiesel hears from his close friend ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. They Things They Carried. Explication Life in a Warzone Reading the short story The Things they carried, by Tim O Brien, creates a mesmerizing image of a war zone. It describes the tough war times for American soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War. The story is a literary portrayal of the material and mental pressures on the soldiers, who strive to survive physically and mentally in the war. The things they carried talks about how heavily equipped are American Soldiers, and how a group of them carried numerous tools and weapons as war materials. It presents the environment of Lieutenant Jimmy Cross and fellow soldiers. They used to be loaded with survival goods and weapons all the time during Vietnam War. They carried all possible equipments such as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his mindset Jimmy Cross loved Martha. Jimmy Cross would also carry a couple of letters from Martha as a spiritual symbol of love. Although Jimmy Cross humped his love for Martha, paragraph 3, they were not lovers. Jimmy Cross would think frequently about Martha as it would take Jimmy into a fantasy world. These thoughts would ease his mind and gradually increases his love for Martha. With time passing, thoughts about Martha became more significant in Jimmy Cross s mind and his feelings also escalated. Jimmy Cross would also imagine sexual experiences with Martha such as in paragraph 5, Cross imagines to have touched her left knee. Martha became a remedy, a cure, or a spiritualized gorgeous being for Jimmy Cross in the distressing environment of war. The crisp in Jimmy Cross s imagination came in this story when Jimmy receives a pebble from Martha, as a good luck charm, before Lavender s death. The pebble for Jimmy became like a materialized spiritual object. It reflected all the love that Jimmy had for Martha. Paragraph 39 he carried the pebble in his mouth, turning it with his tongue, tasting the sea salts and moisture. His mind wandered. He had difficulty keeping his attention on the war. These lines give evidence that the pebble had gained immense substance in the life of Jimmy Cross. It was actually that he had started worshipping ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Politics In The Gilded Age Essay Politics in the Gilded Age Discuss Politics in the Gilded Age. Include major political events and issues, and the roles of the bloody shirt, corruption, patronage, and reform movements. The term Gilded Age was named for a Mark Twain book. It meant covered with gold, and was applied to this period as a whole. This was a period of corruption in sordid politics. The Republicans and Democrats didn t really have strong opposing beliefs during this period. The Republicans supported high tariffs and sound money. The Democrats supported lower tariffs and expanded currency. Both rural and urban classes supported each party. They worked with spoils and local issues. Both ... One was the Great Mobilier scandal; it dealt with the Union Pacific Railroad. The Construction Company hired themselves at inflated prices to build railroad lines, and distributed shares of stock to congressmen. A scandal during Grant s second term, was the Whisky Ring. This scandal was uncovered in St. Louis, and consisted of selling whiskey without the excise tax. In return it defrauded the government out of millions of dollars. Belknap was selling goods and trading with the Indians for lower prices. During Grant s administration the monetary issues were inflation, cheap money, and greenbacks. The debtors, especially farmers, wanted cheap money. However, Grant vetoed the bill to print more money, and supported withdrawing greenbacks from circulation. Hayes won the disputed election. Four states submitted irregular returns. It was disputed if the Republican president of the Senate or the Democratic Speaker of the House should count them. It was decided that an electoral commission made up of fifteen men. There were eight Republicans and seven Democrats, so the Republicans won. • 6. What Is The Decision To Increase The Federal Funds Rate Article Analysis Just a few days ago, the Federal Reserve increased the federal funds rate from 1.25% to 1.5%. The federal funds rate is one method that the Federal Reserve uses to control monetary policy. The other methods used by the Fed to control monetary policy are open market operations, and the discount window. The federal funds rate is defined as the interest rate that banks charge each other to lend reserve funds. The federal funds rate is usually than the discount rate so that banks are more inclined to go to other banks first, rather than the Fed. During the recession in 2008, the federal funds rate was near 0 in the hopes that banks would lend more, and the economy would be kickstarted. However, as the effects of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another Mankiw principle that this touches upon is that society faces a short run tradeoff between inflation and unemployment. Policymakers can intervene with this tradeoff, by using several different tools and this is one example of that. The unemployment rate is currently at a 17 year low, but the inflation rate is similarly low. By increasing the federal funds rate, the unemployment rate will continue to remain low, while an increase in inflation can be expected. Finally, the last Mankiw principle that the article relates to is that people respond to incentives. Because of the increased federal funds rate, people may be willing to save more in the hopes that interest rates will increase, and they will be paid more. At a lower federal funds rate, people may be willing to spend more, because interest rates will not pay them as much. A concept which we learned in class that this relates to is monetary policy. While fiscal policy is developed by Congress to change the U.S. economy, monetary policy is used exclusively by the Federal Reserve. It involves either increasing the money supply by buying treasury bonds, or lowering the reserve requirement and discount rate. When the money supply needs to be decreased, the Fed does the opposite of those actions. Another concept that this relates to is the federal funds market, which is the market that allows banks that fall short of the reserve requirement to borrow reserves ... • 7. Walmart Social Issues What s the social Issue? Throughout me working with Wal Mart s assets protection, I feel as though equal pay and internals are the two biggest social issues throughout our agency or the store that I work. It is a Wal Mart policy that we must not discuss our wages whether good or bad to other employees because everyone doesn t get paid the same amount. This issue mainly comes into place when people do the same job but get paid differently and coworker start to tell each other about there hourly wage. Many people may not see this as a social issue however it is a social issue and at least to my next issue which is internal theft. Store that I work and it is a proximately $190,000 of shrink and most of it can t be explained. They try to make reports saying is if $190,000 is walking out the doors with customers but I know that there is no way that shrinks is that high with petty thieves that walk out the door. Theory of Deterrence Accepting this theory of deterrence apart of internals, can present itself as a role in theft. If there is anything to deter then we know the problem is there and needs to be fixed. So we know and understand that employee theft is real and a method that requires some cognitive skills or plan of a master mind (if done correctly). Because of we really don t know people and their agendas until they are hired and working for the company it is hard to plan and help internals to decrease. A few ways to help deter the best way possible are paying attention to the body language of people around you, keep an open mind and line of communication with everyone about things that go on in the store, also consider everyone that you work with a suspect (so don t become to buddy buddy.) and have more cameras than what you need. In my opinion is the best way to deter Internals, is through being present in the store allowing everyone to know that they are being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Biography of Fidel Castro Fidel Castro was born on August 13, 1926 in the Bíran, Cuba. (See Figure 5) Fidel grew up in wealthier circumstances than most Cubans at the time, amid the massive and growing poverty. His father, Ángel Castro y Argiz, was originally an immigrant from Spain. During Fidel s childhood, Ángel was a fairly prosperous sugarcane farmer on a farm that had been dominated by United States owned United Fruit Company. His mother, Lina Ruz Gonzalez, was a maid to Angel s first wife, during Fidel s infancy. By the time Fidel was fifteen, his father disbanded his first marriage and wed Lina, who is seen by Fidel to be his true mother. Fidel was educated in private Jesuit boarding schools. By 1945, he entered the law school at the University of Havana. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Castro continued to use guerrilla attacks and gained large numbers of radical followers. Using these guerrilla warfare tactics, Castro became known as the Guerilla Prince and with his supporters, he attacked Batista s forces, conquering and overtaking numerous towns and cities. Batista quickly lost much of his popular support and suffered many embarrassing defeats. Finally, on January 1, 1959, Batista fled Cuba and went into exile, leaving the Cuban government in need of a president and somebody to get rid of the corruption that had previously plagued the country. Manuel Urrutia, a very liberal Cuban lawyer and politician, was placed as president of Cuba, and Castro was placed in charge of the military. However, by July of 1959, Castro had easily and effectively taken over as leader of Cuba, which he would remain as, for the next four decades. (See figure 2) With close ties to his brother, Fidel put Raúl in charge of the military, allowing the Castro family to have most of the control over Cuba. In Castro s beginning years as Cuba s ruler, he made several radical and significant changes in Cuba, including collectivizing agriculture, nationalizing industry, and seizing and eliminating most American owned businesses, factories, and farms. The three boys, Rameck, Sam, and George all grew up in impoverished neighborhoods in New Jersey. They were surrounded by drugs, violence, theft, prejudice, and death. None of the 3 had a father figure within their home while growing up and discovered that it was extremely difficult to find any positive role models within their area. As kids, Sam and Rameck both caved under the peer pressure and became entangled in immoral activity. Rameck had even let adrenaline take over during a fight and stabbed a man in the thigh with a switchblade. As a result he spent 4 days in jail, some time on house arrest, and faced attempted ... With absolute astonishment, my parents, after 2 brief periods of separation and even acquiring divorce papers, re discovered their love for one another and are now one of the happiest and most secure couples I know. Even my sister and myself get along great now, often confiding in each other with our personal issues. In the Epilogue at the end of the book it clearly states, Friends don t have to be alike to be part of a pact. The three of us all have distinct personalities that we bring to the mix, (pg. 250, The Pact). I argue that, in the book they all seem to be the same type of person, Sam and Rameck more so than George. I often became confused over who was telling the story and which experience was who s. George had separated himself from the bad crowd, understanding the trouble it could get him into. Sam and Rameck involved themselves in negativity early on and argue that it was necessary. They had continually annoyed me for much of the early portions of the book. I have always been my own person. I functioned separately from the crowd and formed my own opinions and ideas. Edward appears just in time to push her out of the way and stop the car with his vampire strength , and in turn saving her life. This is a clichéd Damsel in Distress situation, in which a helpless female is saved by a masculine hero. This unoriginal sequence of events is extremely over used, is both boring and creatively lazy, and on top of that, once again, enforces dangerous stereotypical roles in society for both males and females. A routine clinical EEG recording typically lasts 20 30 minutes (plus preparation time). An EEG can tell us if there is abnormal electrical activity in the brain and, in some cases, the types of seizures that someone might be going through. These abnormalities are exemplified well by the repetitive slow wave complexes sometimes seen in herpes simplex encephalitis, which should suggest this diagnosis if the complexes are found in patients with an acute cerebral illness. The electrical findings are best regarded as one more physical sign, however, and as such should be evaluated in conjunction with the other clinical and laboratory data. A further use of electroencephalography one that may increase in importance with the development of quantitative techniques for assessing the data that are obtained is in the screening or monitoring of patients with metabolic disorders, because it provides an objective measure of the improvement or deterioration that may precede any change in the clinical state of the patient. Hrothgar does not have any further imput and does not dispute the suggestion, thus suggesting she has some influence on the king. When she addresses Beowulf, she tells him to accept the gift she gives to him. Through this gesture we can suggest that she is a great hostess. Also, in Old English, noble women tended to give gifts which showed reciprocity. To finish off her speech, she reveals confidence as she says the noble men, having drunk, will do as I ask. The decision by a nation of people to implement one of the three main forms of government, confederacy, unitary, or federalism, is an important aspect in defining the nature and role of government in the lives of its citizens. Confederacies exist as a group of autonomous individual states, regions, or member components who form a national body, or centralized government, to represent their independent interests at a more regional and international level. The existence of the national government is derived from the consent of each governed autonomous state or region. The entities that submit to this central ruling authority are able to withdraw from the compact that binds them together. The national authority created is only bestowed with the powers, authority, and privileges which the independent components in the confederacy allow. If any member component feels its interests are no longer being served or the compact has interfered with its autonomy, then that entity of the confederacy can sever its ties with the national body. This can occur because the state, region, or member component has the supreme ultimate authority over its own affairs. In paragraph eight, Emerson explains that one of the influences on man is nature. The people and events of the time period can effect how a person thinks. The nature around Man Thinking can also be the society that the person is in. In society today, people tend to be put into groups. Emerson goes on to explain that the mind is tyrannized over by its own unifying instinct , meaning that people want to belong, and by wanting to belong, they change who they are so that they conform to the standards of society. Man Thinking is the person who steps out of the box that society has put them in and refuses to accept the role that they have been giving. Instead of accepting everything that people say and do, Man Thinking ask, Why? , while Delegated Thinking does the exact opposite. Delegated Thinking accepts everything, they do not step past the boundary. The little box that society has place them in remains intact. Man Thinking is the leader, they show the way and create new paths, not just for themselves, but for others, while Delegated Thinking follows the path, they look at it as the truth and the only way to get around the obstacle. An example of Delegated Thinking would be someone who drops out of school because society has lead them to believe that they cannot be successful in life. However, an example of ... • 34. Enron And Corporate Culture Of Enron Introduction In 1985 The Enron Corporation came into existence after a successful merger between two gas pipeline companies. The company nurtured a very competitive culture, which encouraged employees to win at any means necessary. Enron s culture led employees to cast loyalty and ethics aside in favor of high performance (Ferrell, p. 494). The executives of Enron covered up their increasing debt by using special purpose entities. Meanwhile, Enron continued to report increasing profits to their investors, which led to more investors giving Enron their money. There were many factors that aided Enron in their demise, but the largest was the greed of Enron s executives, the auditors, and the attorneys. The corporate culture of Enron, their auditors bankers and attorneys and their Chief Financial Officer played vital roles in the fall of Enron. How did the corporate culture of Enron contribute to its bankruptcy? In its wake, Enron s CEO, Ken Lay, wanted Enron to be a company which cultivated a culture that allowed employees the opportunity to reach their full potential. Lay wanted to make Enron a company that had high integrity and moral values, but as time progressed Enron became a company which pushed its integrity aside to engage in fraudulent behavior so that the executives could earn more profit (Ferrell, p. 487). Enron s corporate culture would be best described as very proud and arrogant. The company even displayed a banner in their lobby which stated, The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Life Of A First Generation College Student My time spent at Cogswell Polytechnical College has been one of a great experience thus, making me more appreciative of the financial hardships my family continues to endure in order for me to attend such a prestigious university. There is no one in my family to have made it this far academically as I am living the life of a first generation college student. Now, being the only person out of my other nine siblings to identify as a college student raises a lot of concern from the adults of the family as well as intrapersonal stress. The annual income my family lives off of could be considered at poverty level, therefore financials are allocated properly by priority with my education not being one of them. Just as society views eighteen to be the threshold of adulthood, so do my parents. Consequently, I am attending college strictly on my own and this is what makes me suitable candidate for the Dragon scholarship. Simply put, anything to financially assist in my schooling would definitely relieve the stress of wondering if Cogswell will just one day become too expensive for me to attend. When furthering my education, problems within my family didn t only occur at the idea of myself attending college but the logistics of doing so. It was this conflict of, in a way, restarting life as my hometown is Vallejo and commuting to San Jose was just not an option. Nonetheless, San Jose was first foreign to me, but thanks to the short journey from my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Mitchell Museum Of The American Indian Essay The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian is located at 3001 Central Street in Evanston, Illinois. The museum s main purpose is not only to educate the public about American Indians, but also to deconstruct stereotypes and give tribal members something along the lines of a safe place where they are welcome to embrace their ethnicity. One factor that showcases the information I previously stated is the fact that tribal members have free admission into the museum. Another way the museum salutes the ethnicity of American Indians is by commemorating Native individuals alive today. Names of famous Native Americans are displayed along with their contributions to the ethnic group. One of the people displayed is Sarah Deer, who is a professor and lawyer that fought for Tribal Jurisdiction. Upon arrival, I was informed that the museum is divided by Tribes and the regions in which each tribe was located. The museum is divided into Alaska/Canada, Northwest Coast, Southwest, Plains, and Woodlands. The reason I think it is divided this way is so that every person who visits has the ability to learn about each region of tribes separately. It is easy to make assumptions that Native Americans were all the same, but the truth is that they were all unique. Each tribe has their own customs, clothing, food, and ways of life. Another captivating aspect of the museum are their display cases, filled with pottery and artifacts of each tribe. The Alaska/Canada region includes tribes like the ... Strange Fruit was an early cry for the Civil Rights Movement, exposed racism, and performed the practice o hanging. The song has simple lyrics, that carry a huge strength, and haunt you even when the song is over. The juxtaposition of the beautiful landscape, the scent of flowers, with the blood of human beings brutally beaten, gives a powerful and poignant felling to the song. The song exposes the brutality of racism in America, and doesn t leave any room for more words. When the meaning of the song is fully grasped, one remains shocked, angry and disguste by the imagery portrayed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Billie Holiday, perhaps the greates singer in the jazz history, delivers a soul emptying vocal lament over a groove as deep and dark as the history of lynching itself. In Holiday s unforgettable singing we can hear all the rage and resignation, the sorrow and determination, the bitterness and hope, as if her voice could carry the full emotional burden of the long and conflicted history of race in America. The song is heartbraking. The song is simple in its structure, having only three stanzas and 12 lines. The lines follow a rhyme pattern, where in each consecutive pair of lines has their ending thyming with each other. Stange Fruit describes the scene of a lynching of a Black American and its resemblance to a fruit hanging from a tree. The bodies were described as strange fruits . There are a few methafors in the song; trees are symbol of life. Meeropol s tree has blood on the leaves and blood at the root , showing that both recent and older generations of African Americans have experienced the same sort of violent persecution. This portest song was praised for its concise yet strong description of the butal treatment given to Black Americans. • 40. Mass Markets and Mass Production In today s world, Mass Markets have lost its appeal. The time where mass production of goods and services for all customers are long gone. Mass Marketing is paving way for Niche Marketing using more personalised approach. Mass Markets as we know are large unsegmented or undifferentiated market where products and services are offered to every consumer using mass marketing techniques. On the other hand, Mass Marketing is referred to as the market coverage approach where companies use one particular idea on the entire mass market. The focus of Mass Markets is gradually shifting towards Niche Markets. Such markets mainly focus on particular products to a much defined audience unlike mass markets. The product is customised and made according to customers needs hence the customer is also ready pay for their preferred product. One of the examples of such mass markets was Coca Cola. Around the 1880 s, Asa Griggs Candler bought the rights of Coca Cola originally from John Pemberton. He made unique changes to its packaging and logo to attract its customers. He sold Coca Cola through huge advertising spending to the mass audience becoming the first person to use this technique of mass marketing which made Coca Cola one the most successful brands in the soft drinks sector. The concept of mass markets first came into existence during the Second World War. During this time, there was an increased need to produce electronic equipment s like the Radio and Television giving rise to mass ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. The Growth Of Emerging Markets 1. Introduction The last decade has seen an increase in internationalisation from emerging market multinationals (EMNCs), through outward foreign direct investment (OFDI). This internationalisation phenomenon, has led to increase interest from researchers in the international business discipline (Cavusgil, 1980; Hoskisson, Eden, Lau, Wright, 2000; Jormanainen Koveshnikov, 2012). In 2013, emerging economies invested $553 billion, representing 39% of global OFDI, compared with only 12% at the beginning of the 2000 (UNCTAD, 2014). These trends are consistent across different emerging market sub regions, as organisations that are aggressively investing are doing so not only from large emerging economies like China, India, Brazil, and Russia but also from a number of new emerging economies in Asia, Latin America and Africa (Gammeltoft, Pradhan, Goldstein, 2010; Goldstein Bonaglia, 2007). Emerging markets (EM) are seen generally as low income, rapid growth countries using economic liberalisation as their primary engine of growth (Hoskisson et al., 2000). The economic liberalisation or open policies adopted by these emerging markets during the last two decades has led organisations from these economies to internationalize or seek markets abroad. Emerging markets are known to be heterogeneous in their level of development and environmental surroundings (Bianchi, 2014). Each manifests different starting points or different stages of ...
