Angel Isolation
Isolation from the world and other people can sometimes be good for people. For those that choose
to step back and take a break from the world, isolation can be a time of growth and self discovery.
However, if a person is forced into isolation, like Gregor Samsa and the angel were, it has a
completely different effect. For the angel in The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings and Gregor
Samsain The Metamorphosis, their isolation was physical as well as mental. The angel in The
Very Old Man with Enormous Wings , was locked in a chicken coop for what seems to be
several months, constantly being picked at and gawked at by townspeople who had paid to see
him. He was a large man with enormous wings living in a tiny space with no meaningful human
contact. Although the reader is not able to delve into the mind of the angel and see his thoughts,
it is easy to imagine how someone would feel if they were in a strange place, locked in a small
chicken coop, and looked upon as a sideshow. In the Metamorphosis , Gregor Samsa was also
locked in a small space for several months. Although he was in a familiar place, after his
transition to a bug, he was looked upon by his family as a stranger. He became more and more
isolated as the story went on both from his family and his humanity. Although the angel and Gregor
were both nonhuman and experienced several months of isolations, they were very different. The
angel was described as an old scruffy man with very large wings. Gregor on the other hand was a
human man that had completely turned into a bug. There were no physical human characteristics
to Gregor once he had turned into a large cockroach. The other characters in the stories also treated
the Gregor and the old man very differently. The people in The Very Old Man with Enormous
Wings , seemed to be a lot more fascinated by the angel than scared of him. People wanted to see
the angel and came from all over and even paid money to do so. In The Metamorphosis , Gregor
s family was terrified of him and kept him locked up in his room until he died. Another major
difference between the two characters was that in the end of The Very Old Man with Enormous
Wings , the angel was freed from the coop, gained his strength

Weight Loss Differences
In today s time many people have a problem with facing obesity, and many have no clue how to
overcome this obstacle. Though many weight loss programs have been around for a long time
most of these programs are not proven to be effective. A group of people from the Bowling Green
State University decided to conduct an experiment published as A randomized trial comparing two
approaches to weight loss: Differences in weight loss maintenance which would compare two
weight loss programs by taking a different approach in each but using the basically the same
methods. The two programs were titled as New Perspectives (NP) and Transforming Your Life
(TYL). The group of researchers included Robert A Carels, Jacob M Burmeister, Afton M Koball,

Though the NP group was sort of held at a disadvantage they were still taught enough skills to
lose weight if they would have had the willpower to do so. The success of the TYL program was
well earned and learned habits continued to show after the experiment was over. By expanding the
subject variety different results could have occurred, but overall the study was very well presented.
The study also would have been much more effective if both groups would have been taught the
same common skills. Even with the changes that could have been made the study A randomized
trial comparing two approaches to weight loss: Differences in weight loss maintenance was still
very effective and useful for the future of weight

Importance Of Natural Rights In Nepal Essay
HOW GOOD IS YOUR GOVERNMENT ACCORDING TO JOHN LOCKE?
John Locke was an English 17th century philosopher. He believed that, in return for the citizens
letting the government take control, the government should give complete rights to life, liberty, and
property to the people. These are known as John Locke s natural rights. These natural rights mean
that an ideal government must provide safety to the people, protect their property and belongings
and give the people adequate freedom. Nepal is a country in southern Asia, with a population of
28.98 million. The official language of Nepal is Nepali. It s has a Federal Parliamentary Republic
government system, with its president being Bidhya Devi Bhandari and the prime minister Sher
Bahadur Deuba. It became a country in the year 1768. The structure of the government provides the
natural rights to the people of Nepal. However, the performance of the government needs to be
improved significantly to safeguard these rights.
The first natural right is Life. The government should provide adequate safety to the citizens.
Following are some of the relevant statistics. Nepal is the 65th highest country out of 203 for
murder rates. It had 818 cases of murder in 2009. It is 74th highest out of 134 countries for
intentional homicide, with 2.8 cases per every 100,000 people. In addition, Nepal is rated 46th
out of 132 for overall crime levels. The country went through a decade long civil war between the
Maoists, followers of the communist, Mao Zedong, and the security forces of Nepal. During this
war, there were several cases of torture, murder and other serious violations. Even though the war
ended in 2006, no one has been accounted for the violations. The police routinely refuse to answer
complaints from the victims or their relatives and many of the police investigations were flawed.
There has also been some international pressure to bring justice to the crimes. This shows that the
government can do a lot better to protect the lives of citizens. Another example is the way the
government responded to the April 2015 Earthquake, otherwise known as the Gorkha Earthquake.
There were 9000 lives lost and 22 000 people injured. Even though the government knew that the
country was

Memes In Richard Dawkins s The Selfish Gene
When identifying what a meme is, one should consider the fact that a meme is not just a
circulating picture of a cat deemed grumpy. A meme is much more complex in the sense that exist
as many different entities ranging from new concepts to new slang words, to even a development
of a new behavior that has become popular within a culture. Richard Dawkins, author of the book
The Selfish Gene who is also credited for the creation of the word memeticsstates that memes act as
units that house ideas, symbols, and behaviors that are distributed from person to person via word
of mouth, tv, magazines. According to Dawkins s theory, there is a tremendously positive
correlation between cultural evolution and biological evolution. He claims that memes are ideas
that act as genes in the sense that they begin with one person and travel to the... Show more content

Harvey the Cat 5 hurricane that occurred on August 25th left parts of Texas 40 inches under water

the backlash he received for presiding over a church that seats over 16000 parishioners that he did
not open to the people of Houston Texas that were seeking refuge. In the beginning, Osteen stated
via twitter, that the church was inaccessible due to flooding. He then recanted his statement and
stated that he did not open his church because nobody asked him to. It wasn t until he was
publicly ridiculed online that he decided that he would open his church to those in need. To some
people the meme was an attempt to be humorous, but for others the meme provides some serious
social commentary. Especially concerning the idea that some preachers sell the idea that in order

Langston Hughes Dream Deferred Essay
langston huges dream defered
After the Civil War won the black people their freedom, it seemed as though their dreams of great
opportunities were finally going to come true. However, they were met by even more obstacles,
which left the blacks to wonder if their dreams had any chance of occurring, or if they should just
give up. In his poem, Harlem, Langston Hughes used increasingly destructive imagery to present
his warning of what will happen if you delay working towards your goal.
Hughes first two images depict withering and drying, a sense of death. His first example, a dried
raisin, conveys that the dream deferred has shriveled into nothing and has no hope of ever
happening. The dried raisin, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, since a sore can be irritating and bothering, we can deduce that the dream deferred keeps
nagging at the person. This prevents the person from ignoring or forgetting about their dream.
The following image, which compares the dream to a sagging, heavy load, shows how burdensome
it can be. It s as though the memory of the dream is in the bag, and the disappointment of the
dream s impossibility weighs the dreamer down. The dream deferred (bag) is very heavy and
onerous. However, if the dreamer carries the bag long enough, they get to enjoy the reward (their
dream) waiting inside.
The final image used to describe a dream deferred is an explosion. The worsening conditions in
Hughes comparisons build up to the final dГ©nouement of a violent explosion. This explosion is
all of the pent up emotions, thoughts, and feelings of the dream deferred, which build up inside
you until, finally, they are expressed all at once in one big eruption.
Throughout the poem Harlem, Langston Hughes wrote with increasingly destructive images to
warn of the dangers of postponing your dreams. These images help present the poem s very
strong message that a dream deferred can be very painful. The thought of how great the dream is
nags at the dreamer s mind until they can no longer bear it. The explosion result of this pestering
dream deferred can actually be good for the dreamer. The dreamer may

What Is The Difference Between Roark And Peter Keating
Howard Roark and Peter Keating s means of achieving success diverge in that Keating assumes the
caliber of his outcomes on the approval of others through his application of external guidance
whereas Roark disclaims any external sentiment toward his work; he operates independent from the
judgement of others and external impacts on his product. In order to evaluate the fortune of these
two characters, successmust be delineated. One application of achievement establishes it on the
measurement of how well one executes a task, and their procurance. Many gauge their earnings
through interactions with others; to an extent, social conditioning generates human dependence.
The Fountainhead, however, confronts this conception of success with a jarring contrast between
Keating s and Roark s paths. Roark s approach to accomplishment inheres in his independence from
the opinions of others whereas a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, a pattern emerges in an evaluation of Keating s path to success ; it indicates
advancement through his ultimate resignation to the jurisdiction and ideals of others, a quality
derived from his character throughout Rand s novel. Ultimately, it is Keating s character that
supplies his apparent success and his graduation scene introduces his nature. Guy Francon reiterates
the dean s assertion that all the proper forms of expression have been discovered long ago (24), and

Primitiveness And Savagery In Joseph Conrad s Heart Of...
In Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness , Conrad uses the depictions of the natives as Marlow goes
down the river to portray how human nature is with different levels of power. He uses color
imagery to correlate the darkskin of the natives to the name of the continent the natives live on, the
Dark Continent . He portrays Africa, or the Dark Continent to be a place of primitiveness and
savagery. The nature of the natives are primitive and savagetoo. In the same way, he aides the
superficial meanings of his description with words that have negative connotations to further his
depiction of the natives as primitive and savage.
In the beginning when Marlow arrives at the Outer Station, Conrad uses the dead and dying
natives to represent what human nature should be and sometimes is on the outside. They were
dying slowly it was very clear. They were not enemies, they were not criminals, they were
nothing earthly now nothing but black shadows of disease and starvation, lying confusedly in the
greenish gloom (Conrad 19). They lack power. Conrad intentionally portrays them as powerless
because without power, they aren t a threat. He relates this to the primal feelings of man. Given
that the Outer Station is a representation of how people should be on the surface, Conrad
represents the natives as the inner savages. The natives are dead and dying because the inner
savage is dead or dying in society. We have constructed a society in which the inner savages, aka
the natives, have no

Forensic Accounting Essay
Forensic Accounting in Practice: Forensic Accountants: Fraud Busters
A forensic accountant is part investigator, part auditor, part attorney, and part accountant (Levanti,
T.). Due to the increase in high profile cases of companies and individuals, forensic accounting is a
growing and popular field in the business and forensic subjects. A forensic accountantis someone
who is often retained to analyze, interpret, summarize, interviews and present complex financial and
business related issues in a manner that is both understandable and properly supported (Zysman, A.).

Any discussions made between the lawyer and the consultant are protected by attorney work
product privilege allowing both parties to freely exchange information without disclosure to the
other side. However, if the consultant has been identified as an expert witness, only then is the
work product privilege lifted and their work is discoverable to the opposing counsel (Elmore, D.R.).
As an authority in the field, the forensic accountant is brought in during the discovery phase of
litigation and begins by evaluating the facts of the case and determining whether a claim is valid.
After examining the strengths and weaknesses of the case, the consultant can then advise on the
most effective way to present these facts at trial. The forensic consultant is also on board to analyze
the arguments made by the opposing attorneys and their expert witnesses and verify the amounts
claimed (Elmore, D.R.).
If the consultant specializes in damage evaluations, they can help determine within reason how
much money the claimant is owed under any circumstances. For example, in a civil lawsuit
stemming from a car accident, a forensic accountant can be used to assess the likely loss of past
and future earnings asked for by the claimant. On the other side of the case, a consultant
representing the insurance company can help determine

The Discovery Of The Osedax Worm
A matriarchy flourishes nearly 2,300 feet below sea level. As the female Osedax worm swims in
search of decaying animal bones to eat, her male equivalent nearly one hundred thousand times
smaller than her clamours to latch onto her body and wriggle himself into her translucent tube
alongside hundreds of other dwarf Osedax dudes.
Scientists found the first of these odd undersea worms 12 years ago while remotely patrolling the
bottom of the ocean. The worms lack teeth and guts; yet they consume bones by secreting an acid
that dissolves the bones, and then ingesting the protein and fat through their skin. All variations of
the worm seemed to follow the same mating pattern, where hundreds of thirsty boys scramble to
attach to a large, stable girl. A recent discovery from the Scripps institute in Chicago, however, has
scientists celebrating a more self sufficient male what they call the Osedax Priaus, or the penis

Empathy And Irony In William Stafford s Poem
People do not have the same destinies. However, though one can not easily understand another
completely, individuals see their futures, even when their thread gets tangled like a jar of jewelry.
Especially during the high school ages, young people are constantly ask about their futures, and
although it is in good nature, the wanderertends to overstep and misunderstand. The first half of the
poem appears to speak to an individual s plan: the attachment to the thread, the necessary
explanation, the questions. Then, the second half seems to connect to the unalterable stream of
life. As Stafford writes, you don t ever let go of the thread, the poem feels more like a death

Intuition has been a strong factor in my plans for after high school and it can be confusing for
another to understand. It is true, threads are unknowable to outsiders. However, empathy is a way
around the barrier. No one needs to understand everything, but humans need to be less narrow
minded for everyone to flourish. The title is an unqualified fact of life. Using simplistic words, the
title becomes matter of fact. After reading the poem, one would assume the title should include the
word thread because of how symbolic it is throughout the work. Stafford knows this feeling is
universal; the title indicates the reader will understand. Throughout the poem, the tone remains
unvarnished, playing to the logical side of the issue. People will always misunderstand others this
is the way it is.
By writing The Way It Is is second person, Stafford further explores the universal aspect of
explanation. In certain instances, one might think in second person, as possibly reassurance or
motivation. Once one disassociates themselves from montra, it can become more powerful, in a
way. This poem is able to speak to every individual reading it because this is how humans have
broad ideas. There is a unique relationship between the narrator and the reader, when second person
is used. Because second person is used, the reader begins to assume the narrator is an omnipotent
being; they

Is Man Inherently Evil
The Evil Within In Thomas Hobbes book Leviathan he writes that man is selfish, poor, and
brutish. He believes that man is inherently evil and their selfishness leads to war and negative
things (SAT). I agree with Hobbes. Man is inherently evil because people spread hate and
commit atrocities. One reason it is evident that man is inherently evil is because people spread
hatred. Social media is used today on a day to day basis, it is such a huge platform for
communication and entertainment. What it s supposed to be used for though, may not be how
people are using it. People take advantage of the fact that you can be anonymous on social media

shooting was the biggest Massacre in United States history. This shows how evil man can be
because they commit mass murders without a specific reason or outcome simply because man
feels hate. If man was born good, then why would they commit mass murders? It clearly shows
man is evil because man killed innocent people and a good person would never take someone s
life. Also man destroys the world they live in. In the article Top 10 Environmental Issues Caused

just some of the issues man has created for this earth. Take industrial mining, mining for gold is

destroying so much land for only a couple ounces of gold shows the selfishness of man. This

Prejudice In Australian Society Essay
As Australians we live in an abundantly multicultural society. Walk out into a public area and
you ll be surrounded by faces all from a vast array of many different ethnic backgrounds. It is
perceived by many of us that Australia as a nation is fairly accepting of racial difference and
people from other backgrounds. But much of the evidence seated clearly before us points to an
entirely different consensus. As human beings not one of us is born with prejudice or hate in our
hearts. These values are taught to us by our upbringing and experiences within the society we live
in. Hate and prejudices are instilled upon us by what we are accustomed to and our experience, but
most often, what we are told. And the grueling truth in todays society is that the single most

I have little doubt that the vast majority of the Australian public does retain invariably good
intentions when it comes to the moral issue of discrimination; but sometimes, just to mean well just

religion, physical appearance and ways of living and viewing the world. This includes negative
attitudes towards the use of different languages, foreign accents or the use of non standard
variations of a dominant community language. An explicit attitude is an attitude that the person can

The Effects Of Ozone Depletion
The ozone depletion has been well documented to negatively affect planet Earth for years. The
ozone is a thin layer of the EarthВґs atmosphere which is responsible for absorbing the sun s
harmful ultraviolet light ( What is Ozone Layer?,2017). The loss of ozone on earth will take a toll
on human health, plants and marine ecosystems, ultimately resulting in a planet that does not
support living things. Today, this manifests in climate change. It is easy for many to confuse these
two issues, although they are connected in various ways. Loss of the ozone layer is caused by
greenhouse gases such as chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs (compounds with chlorine and/or fluorine
attached to carbon), as well as , halons (similar compounds with bromine or iodine) (Jain 2015).
These chemicals can stay in the atmospherefor up to 100 years causing damage(What is Ozone
Layer?,2017). Greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide, contribute to global warming, which then
contributes to climate change by warming the surface and waters. These factors are resulting in a
domino effect on our environment. Climate change is classified as an abrupt increase in the Earths
temperatures typically caused by human activity (National Aeronautics Space Administration
2016). Human activities that release pollutants in our atmosphere are changing it and contributing
to global warming and ozone depletion. With all the knowledge, resources and tools invented for the
benefit of humans, one would think that these

operates several fast food brands in Australia. KFC is the major brand that Yum runs. The main
product of KFC is made by chicken meat. Therefore, the strength and the weakness of KFC are
obviously. People who like chicken meat will highly be attracted by KFC. However, it gives
customer who like fast food a limited choice. Just use the one kind of meat will make the brand to
be more professional. But it also will narrow its potential markets.
3. Value creation:
Value creation means increase the value of products, service and even business to meet the
customers needs and requirements so that they can get competitive advantages. (Business Fundas,
2012) As we analyzed, fast food industry s threat of new entrants is low and the availability of
substitutes is high. It s a fare market which the buyers have strong powers.
The main value created by Red Rooster is its intangible assets like brand loyalty and goodwill. It
s the only wholly Australian owned chicken brand which can meet the local needs more and get
more support from Australians. (Red Rooster, 2013) Another value of Red Rooster is its health
concept. It used oven roasted chicken chain to make the benefits increase from 16% to 30% on
the financial year. (Frchanise business, 2006) Red Rooster reduces the 40% of fat absorption of
the chicken. (Matt Paish,2011) The health quality of food gives a huge competitive advantage for
Red Rooster. Besides, to create the value, some new and cheap

Analysis Of The Article Volunteerism Among Homeless...
The article, Volunteerism among Homeless Persons with Developmental Disabilities, by Larry G.
Morton II and Giovanina Gardiner conducted the study in at George Warren Brown School of
Social Work, Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. The researchers discuss about the
adults hardships and struggles these individuals are exposed to on a daily basis. In addition, this
vulnerable population is excluded from mainstream society. The authors that conducted this study
did a comparison on homeless individuals who were diagnosis with a developmental delay to
determine if there is a correlation between volunteerism and community integration. Furthermore,
the intent of this article is to take Bowgett s study a step further by reporting the level of
volunteerism in an urban sample of homeless persons with developmental disabilities. The research
question is does volunteerism suggest healthy community integration among this ample of
homeless persons with developmental disabilities? ( (Gardiner, Morton, Cunningham Williams,
2010, p. 2). In fact, the demographics of this article were citizens residing in two suburban St.
Louis city public parks. Also, the following stipulation include: being age eighteen or older, having
received special education services for development disabilityduring their educational career, and
being currently homeless ( i.e. staying outdoors, in a shelter, temporarily doubled up in another s

Welfare Reform Essay
Welfare Reform
The U.S. Congress kicked off welfare reform nationwide last October with the Personal
Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, heralding a new era in which
welfare recipients are required to look for work as a condition of benefits. http://www.detnews.com

women, and children who are in need of financial and medical assistance. Over the years, welfare
has become a way of life for its recipients and has created a culture of dependency. Currently, the

This paper will analyze the welfare reform system. Through my analysis I will examine several
areas of concern in the welfare reform system. First, as an overview, I will look at the Personal
Responsibility Work Opportunity Act. Second, I will look at the Welfare to Workfare program. We
will then examine how welfare recipients with disabilities will be handled under this new reform

THE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILTY AND WORK OPPORTUNITY ACT
The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act of 1996, or the welfare reform law

also replaced several other programs such as Emergency Assistance or EA program. The goal of
TANF is to promote family responsibility and self sufficiency. This program will provide this by
placing welfare recipients into the workforce. Under the TANF program assistance is given to
individuals for a limited time. When that time period has expired, it is the State s

Imperialism In India
Imperialism in India had many positive effects and negative effects. India was introduced to more
technology and ways of communication. It also lead to an increase of population and regular living.
But, it also lead to India being dependent on Britain and lead to famine. There were many positive
effects from this. Great Britain and other industrialized countries introduced more transportation
methods and communication like telephones. These things improved cars, roads that can now be
paved, postal networks, and trains. More advanced and high tech machines were made. This being
brought to India helped industrialize new colonies. These machines were made for manufacturing
goods, electricity, cars, vaccines, steel, guns, and steam engines. After colonization, education like

Britain taught herders the process of crop rotation to fertilize their land. Not only did Britain
help them with that, but they also connected India to the modern world through all of this
technology, medicine, and media. The last benefit was cleaning up. Sanitation was not very
important until they were taught cleanliness for health and basic hygiene. From all of the
benefits I have talked about, you might think Britain was great to India, but they also caused so
many problems. Wars with Britain, also against leaders by Great Britain, took money away from
India. The East India Trading Company would buy materials and goods at a very low price while
selling their processed goods at a very high price price. Britain also ruined India s previous
economy and industries as a result of Britain making them import their goods from Britain and not
allowing them buy their own goods from India. Because of this, industries such as the handmade
cloth industry, metal industries, and carpentry industries, fell because cloth was made of better
quality for less money in Britain due to mass

The Impact Of Television And Its Impact On Society
Throughout the years, TV has impacted us in several ways. Yet, who knows where TV will be
in our years to come. As we continue to become more technologically advanced, the use of
television will soon be a game changer. As we take a look back on the history of TV, we first
started off the television industry with black and white pictures. Since it was an upbringing at the
time, it was not as clear and the pictures would appear pixelated. Although that seemed to change
as devices such as cameras and scanning systems seemed to progress over time. In 1936 John Logie
Baird, an inventor of amplified mechanical televisions, had first started off with 240 lines. Now,
we live in a generation where we ve tremendously evolved in regards to our high definition as
1080 is the norm. As we move on from black and white, individuals were now introduced to color
television. It made TV more enjoyable and the quality continued to improve. Another
advancement that developed throughout the years would be time shifting. In other words, this
was known as video tape recorders. This device amazed individuals as they were able to record a
show and watch it at a more suitable time. However, DVDs soon took the place of VHS recorders
as it became more convenient. With all these technological improvements, the one that seemed to
have a greatest impact on society would be the introduction of digital television. The picture quality
was more clear and made TV worth watching. Also, people had

Essay on The False Memory Task
The False Memory Task begins by giving examples of how memory of events can be incorrect,
although we might not be aware of it. The goal of this task is to clearly show how easy it is for
our memories to have false information. We are often convinced that our memories are correct,
especially when they seem to be logical and contain a lot of detail. However, errors in memory
are easily made and far more frequent than the majority of people realize. This ZAPS experiment
approaches false memory errors in a way where it is easy to point out, and create, false memories.
The procedure is simple. On the computer screen, twelve words are revealed one word at a time in

In my theory, confusion was the key element. Transplant errors, explained by the Cognition text
book, were likely to take place. Transplant errors are the process of confusing elements from one
memory with elements from another. I was positive that this ZAPS task would have elements that
would purposely confuse participants, thus creating false memories.
After the first and second list appeared, I quickly realized that each list was categorized by
theme. This knowledge helped me to organize the words contained in each list. My articulatory
rehearsal loop captured words as they were presented, although I only had one chance to say
them before another word appeared. Instead of trying to store all twelve words in the
articulatory rehearsal loop, I kept track of the theme of the list and applied my prior knowledge
of the subject and my schema to the entire list. This allowed me to file away each word under
one subject, and therefore only one slot in my articulatory rehearsal loop was used. When it came
time to recall the words, I recognized words that had been relevant to that list. If a word fit the
context of the list, I selected it.
However, in selecting every word that was relevant, I grew increasingly unsure if I had actually
seen the word, or if the word was the category I had created in my working memory. For example,
one of the lists was concerned with the universe, so in the matrix I chose every word that was

Theme Of Friendship In The Outsiders
A Story About Friendship, Courage, and Empathy The functions of intellect are insufficient and
useless if you are without courage, love, friendship, compassion, and empathy, says a quote by
Dean Koontz. Throughout S.E. Hinton s book The Outsiders, there are many themes that she
conveys in the book as she narrates the experiences of a greaser named Ponyboy who is a
member of the Social group (Socs). Ponyboy meets many people and witnesses many difficult
situations throughout the book. This inspirational book teaches the reader crucial lessons that
are very important for everyone, even if their lives are not anything like Ponyboy s. Three
important themes in the book include friendship, courage and empathy. Friendship is mandatory
to be able to trust and rely on one another. Hinton writes about troubles that Ponyboy goes
through and how his friends have a great impact on these experiences. For example, Johnny
killed Bob who was a member of the Socs, because he saw that Bob along with other Socs were
trying to drown Ponyboy. He knew that he d be in trouble, and he could have just left then and
there. Instead, he killed Bob because they were hurting Ponyboy. Another situation where the
author shows the theme of friendship is when Ponyboy got jumped and his whole gang came to
help him. They were always ready to help a member of their group. Also, the situation when the
church was on fire and Dally went to try and save Johnny, shows friendship as well. In chapter 6,
Jerry, who Ponyboy thinks is one of the school s teachers, says, We think the towheaded kid is
going to be all right. He burned one arm pretty badly, though, trying to drag the other kid out of
the window, (pg. 95). This tells us that Dally, who at first wouldn t help the children in the
church, helped Johnny get out because he was his friend and he cared about him. This shows
how Dally demonstrates his friendship. Courage is crucial to be able to overcome obstacles and
help others. Courage is a big theme in The Outsiders. For example, Ponyboy showed a lot of
courage when he decided to fight in the rumble. He wasn t in good shape as he had lost weight
and was very tense. However, he fought in the rumble regardless to show his gang that he

Western European Explorations
The Western European expeditions of the 15th 18th centuries had a multitude of causes,
religious aims, desire for wealth, glory, and improvements in technology, it also caused a
number of things, such as colonial expansion and the Columbian exchange, use of slaves, and
rise of capitalism and mercantilism. It is often said that the European s chief motives for
exploration were God, gold, and glory . The Europeans set out in a missionary zeal and attempted
to convert as many people, like the Native Americans, to Christianity as they could and drive
Muslims out of other lands. Another thing that propelled the Europeans was the search for gold
and other riches in far off lands through sea routes. They hoped to obtain spices like nutmeg,

Consequently, all of the explorations spurred more colonial expansion efforts by the Western
European nations as they all competed for the better piece of land. One such colonial effort in
America resulted in the global transfer of plants, animals, disease, and food, the Columbian
Exchange. As a result of the deviation to the Native American population, creating a need for
laborers, and the growing desire for cash crops like sugar, cotton, and tobacco, slave trade saw a
sharp increase. This time period also saw the spread and intensification of capitalism, resulting
from the growth of town and city life and expansion of trade. Correspondingly, this acted as a
catalyst in the rise of mercantilism, in which rulers encouraged exports and discouraged imports,
the trade with colonies was expected to supply the home country with great wealth and new

Inequality In America And The American Dream
Even though U. S is the land of opportunities, it seems just as impossible to achieve the American
dream. The American system is controlled by the wealthy who choose, which laws to impose in
the benefit for themselves and organization. The inequality between the poor and rich is so wide
this makes the American dream for most Americans impossible to achieve. To be wealthy like top
1% of the Americans, you need freedom of choice, an inheritance from rich parents and work hard

deserves a little attention. Inequality in America has grown over the past and in fact, it is still

In addition, since it is freedom of choice not only does it let us achieve our goals and fulfilment
but also it is important whether or not it makes us happy. Most people who are very successful
today is because they did what they loved doing what they did. For example, Bill Gates who is
the richest person in the world dropped out of Harvard University and started working on his
Microsoft software because it was something he loved doing, and now he the richest in the
world. By contrast, majorities say freedom of choice in how to live (77%), having a good family
life (70%) and retiring comfortably (60%) are essential to their view of the American dream
(Samantha 7 13). From this fact we can tell that freedom of choice is very important, that is why
we have wealthy people in America. Wish American parents should start allowing their children to
make their choices but should be there just to encourage and guide them. To be wealthy like top 1%
of the Americans, coming from a rich home inheriting your parent s wealth will increase your
chances of being rich. This method of being rich is quite easy because you do not really have to
do anything to be rich since you would just inherit your parent s wealth, that is if your parents are
very wealthy. When mentioned anything above, you do not really have to work or look for a job
because your parents are already wealthy. The only thing you need to worry about is a means of

The Pros And Cons Of College
Remember when you were little and you d fall on the trampoline and everyone would keep
jumping so you couldn t get back up? That s college. Unknown
College is said to provide individuals of a better career opportunity, secured job, and higher
paycheck. Every year, students all around globe debate on what college they want to attend, or if
they want to attend college at all. In the United States, only 65.9 percent of students, who has
graduated from high school the previous spring, had chose to enrolled into college (Norris, para.
2). So the question here is, if college is so great, why are the percent of participants so low? In this
paper, two universities, University of Kentucky and University of Louisville, will be compared by
their admission rates, prices, and student to faculty ratio.

Statistic , par. 2). College is competitive even for those who are extremely intelligent. In the
University of Kentucky, admission rate is around 70 percent ( UK Acceptance Rate , par. 2).
The average composite score is roughly a 21, meaning that about 50 percent of test takers score
below a 21 (Ellen, par. 5). This college s requirement for ACT ranges from a 23 to a 28, according
to acceptancerate.com ( UK Acceptance Rate , par. 2). The GPA, following the admission rate and

Why Global Warming Doesn T Cause Disease Thomas Moore
Summary
This world is heating up, and all the fire mix tapes that are getting dropped are not the reason
why. Global warming is a very controversial topic in the first place, but is the idea that it is the
cause of diseases even more disputable? It seems so. Thomas Gale Moore, a Senior Fellow at
Stanford University, wrote an argumentative paper titled Why Global Warming
Doesn t Cause
Disease , using sources from the late 1990 s and arguing that The United States Government stating
information concluding that Global warming may cause disease is wrong and should pay attention
to the experts on disease. The information that you will gain from this article is that Global
warming is a possible cause of disease (Moore, n.d).
In the introduction of Thomas Gale Moore s essay, he states that Threats of global warming are
bringing on a plague... infestation we speak of is a plague of misinformation, infecting the public
consciousness and blurring the issue of the effects of climate change on human health in a swarm
of anxiety and confusion . One of his sources states that global warming is not the current problem.
It is a collapse in public health measures, an increase in drug resistance in parasites, and an increase
in pesticide resistance in vector ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
New information is always being found in science, and it is ever changing. In the past decade,
multiple viruses have been found and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of

The Living Planet Index ( Lpi )
Over the course of history, many scientist experts have raised the fright and panic about
population numbers that only increase every year. According to the Living Planet Report, the
Living Planet Index (LPI), which measures more than 10,000 representative populations of
mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, has declined by 52 per cent since 1970.
Population sizes of different species in the world has dropped by at least half. Some of these
species are the living things that establishes the fabric of the ecosystems which sustain life on
Earth. In the following two centuries, the population increased at an annual growth rate of 6 per
1,000, reaching 2.5 billion by 1950. In the following five decades, it has more than doubled, at a
growth rate of 18 per 1,000 to reach more than 6 billion in 2000. The world populationwill reach 8
billion to 10 billion by the year 2030 (Robbins, 130). Today, we are using and taking so much from
our ecosystems and natural processes, we are actually exposing and exploiting our own very
existence on Earth. Nature preservation and sustainable ecological development complement each
other. They are just as much about protecting the future of humanity our well being, economy, food
security, and social stability. Earth s population is approaching ten billion at the same time that
resource limits and environmental deprivation are becoming more apparent every day. Rich
countries have long guaranteed poor nations that they, too, would

George Bush Multilateralism
In the days surrounding president George W. Bush s address to the United Nations regarding the
political climate in Iraq, Washington had become a whirlpool of two different approaches:
unilateralism and multilateralism. After an attempt to appeal to both sides in Washington with his
initial address to the UN, George Bush s action of waging an arguably unjustified war against Iraq
without assistance from the United Nations can ultimately be explained using realist theory.
The dominant approach supported by Bush s Republican party was unilateralism. Assuming the
Republicans led by Cheney and Rumsfeld were truly under the impression that Saddam Hussein
possessed weapons of mass destruction, while also having ties to international terrorist groups, their
wishes were not irrational. The unilateralists felt that every day the United States did not act was
another day closer to an attack like 9/11. The main idea behind realism is that war is inevitable, and
that the number one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Liberalism is centered around the ideal that peace is maintained through policy, rather than war.
In the eyes of a regulatory liberalist, international organizations can peacefully facilitate conflicts
before they turn into war. Powell urged Bush to seek the UN security council s assistance in re
administering nuclear inspections teams within Iraq. The idea was that the inspections teams
would find monitor Iraqi facilities to keep Hussein under control. If Saddam did not agree, then
war could be waged. The key is seeking alternative means of promoting peace before waging a
costly war. Under republican liberalism, democratic states do not wage war under the premise that
the citizens pay the costs of war. The multilateralists knew the war and reconstruction of Iraq would
be very demanding. With this in mind, they felt it was in the US s best interest if members of the
United Nations shared the

Inventions Of The Industrial Revolution
The Industrial Revolution was an innovative period between the 1760s through the 1850s, making
people go from a predominantly agricultural existence into a more urban lifestyle. Starting after
year 1750, all the factors that, made Great Britain the best place for industrialization. The primary
assessment that made it possible was the invention of machines that could do work that was
previously done by hand. This allowed production to shift from inside homes into factories. During
the industrial revolution, new inventions were plentiful and helped to revolutionize the way in
which people lived. The Steam engine, mass production/division of labor, mechanization, abundance
of iron, and the telegraph made the Industrial Revolution... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mass Production and Division of labor is a manufacturing system based upon principles such as
interchangeable parts, large scale productions, and the high volume assembly line. In the early
1800s, a man named Josiah Wedgwood started his own pottery business using mass production,
they made pottery for Europeans who liked to always keep their tea from porcelain because
without the pottery cups the flavor would spoil. He hired many labors to press down the clay,
glaze pieces, carry things, while others put handles on cups. Mass Production adapted to make
workers more productive using less required skills, while being paid less being able to lower costs
of products while boosting quality. Mass Production and Division became the most important
structure for manufacturing across the globe, utilizing extreme impact on popular culture.
Mechanization was a huge process, that changed work that was done before only by hands or
animal s to doing work with new machinery. The cotton thread and weaving for cloth in the 1800s
was a main product for these new machines, the cloth was much nicer, softer, and cleaner than any
hand made clothing as said in the book wealthy Europeans developed a liking for the costly
import. This quote shows that wealthy Europeans were itching for the newly designed products
made by these machines. The people working in this industrial adapted well towards
mechanization by being able to create more product faster, while being less stressed at work.

Fences by August Wilson Essay
In Fences, August Wilson introduces an African American family whose life is based around a
fence. In the dirt yard of the Maxson s house, many relationships come to blossom and wither here.
The main character, Troy Maxson, prevents anyone from intruding into his life by surrounding
himself around a literaland metaphorical fencethat affects his relationships with his wife, son, and
mortality.Throughout the play, readers see an incomplete fence which symbolizes Rose (Troy s
wife) and Troy s drifting relationship. Rose wants Troy and Cory to build a fence to keep her
loved ones protected. This is evident when Rose is seen singing the church hymn, Jesus, be a
fence all around me every day. Jesus, I want you to protect me as I travel on... Show more content

Troy is entirely stubborn in his ways that he cannot see that times has changed. Since Troy was
fenced out from playing professional baseball, he fences Cory out of playing college football.
Troy and Cory s relationship resembles the fence by its purpose and physical attribution. When it
comes to sports, they are separated by the different generations, but they come together because
of their love of sports. Like a fence that is meant to separate outsiders, but connected to bring
together the fence. Troy and Cory s relationship continues to get pushed apart throughout the
play. In Act 2, Scene 4 Troy and Cory get into a fight which leads Troy to state to Cory that his
things will be on the other side of that fence. When Troy kicks Cory out onto the streets, the fence
becomes an actual division between both of them. The two spend a lot of time building the fence,
only for it to create a literal and emotional barrier. The fence becomes a representation of the barrier
that Troy tries to create between him and mortality. Troy has a fixation on Death. He talks about
how Death is an easy fastball on the outside corner (I. i). Troy always speaks about how he could
easily knock a baseball out of the park. Comparing Death to a fastball shows how Troy thinks that
he can continue to always keep Death on the other side of the fence because like a

Cognitive Developmental Stages Of Children
The well known cognitive developmental psychologist, Jean Piaget, proposed 4 different
cognitive stages of human development. Based on his examination and research on children,
Piaget determined that these four cognitive developmental stages were associated with the
achievement of particular milestones. The first stage of Piaget s cognitive developmental stage
is the Sensory Motor Stage. It occurs from birth to 2 years. The second one is the pre operational
Stage, which occurs in children aged around 2 to 7. The third stage is concrete operational stage,
which children are around age 7 to 11. The final stage is the formal operations stage, which
adolescents from the age around 11 to 16 or more. The purpose of this paper is to understand the
cognitive stage for children in different age, and how they perform and think logically in each
stage. In this paper, I did option 2 on the conservation of liquid task by using Piaget s concrete
operational stage and compare how children still in the pre operation stage performed differently.
The task was appropriate to compare the two children. My experiment is to test children s ability
to conserve liquid, and according to Piaget, children that have not entered the concrete operational
stage tend to fail to conserve liquid. People can easily see the differences of logical reasoning
between children in these two different stages. The concrete operational stage is Piaget s third stage
of children s cognitive development. In this stage,

  • 2. Angel Isolation Isolation from the world and other people can sometimes be good for people. For those that choose to step back and take a break from the world, isolation can be a time of growth and self discovery. However, if a person is forced into isolation, like Gregor Samsa and the angel were, it has a completely different effect. For the angel in The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings and Gregor Samsain The Metamorphosis, their isolation was physical as well as mental. The angel in The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings , was locked in a chicken coop for what seems to be several months, constantly being picked at and gawked at by townspeople who had paid to see him. He was a large man with enormous wings living in a tiny space with no meaningful human contact. Although the reader is not able to delve into the mind of the angel and see his thoughts, it is easy to imagine how someone would feel if they were in a strange place, locked in a small chicken coop, and looked upon as a sideshow. In the Metamorphosis , Gregor Samsa was also locked in a small space for several months. Although he was in a familiar place, after his transition to a bug, he was looked upon by his family as a stranger. He became more and more isolated as the story went on both from his family and his humanity. Although the angel and Gregor were both nonhuman and experienced several months of isolations, they were very different. The angel was described as an old scruffy man with very large wings. Gregor on the other hand was a human man that had completely turned into a bug. There were no physical human characteristics to Gregor once he had turned into a large cockroach. The other characters in the stories also treated the Gregor and the old man very differently. The people in The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings , seemed to be a lot more fascinated by the angel than scared of him. People wanted to see the angel and came from all over and even paid money to do so. In The Metamorphosis , Gregor s family was terrified of him and kept him locked up in his room until he died. Another major difference between the two characters was that in the end of The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings , the angel was freed from the coop, gained his strength ... Though many weight loss programs have been around for a long time most of these programs are not proven to be effective. A group of people from the Bowling Green State University decided to conduct an experiment published as A randomized trial comparing two approaches to weight loss: Differences in weight loss maintenance which would compare two weight loss programs by taking a different approach in each but using the basically the same methods. • 4. Importance Of Natural Rights In Nepal Essay HOW GOOD IS YOUR GOVERNMENT ACCORDING TO JOHN LOCKE? John Locke was an English 17th century philosopher. He believed that, in return for the citizens letting the government take control, the government should give complete rights to life, liberty, and property to the people. These are known as John Locke s natural rights. These natural rights mean that an ideal government must provide safety to the people, protect their property and belongings and give the people adequate freedom. Nepal is a country in southern Asia, with a population of 28.98 million. The official language of Nepal is Nepali. It s has a Federal Parliamentary Republic government system, with its president being Bidhya Devi Bhandari and the prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. It became a country in the year 1768. The structure of the government provides the natural rights to the people of Nepal. However, the performance of the government needs to be improved significantly to safeguard these rights. The first natural right is Life. The government should provide adequate safety to the citizens. Following are some of the relevant statistics. Nepal is the 65th highest country out of 203 for murder rates. It had 818 cases of murder in 2009. It is 74th highest out of 134 countries for intentional homicide, with 2.8 cases per every 100,000 people. In addition, Nepal is rated 46th out of 132 for overall crime levels. The country went through a decade long civil war between the Maoists, followers of the communist, Mao Zedong, and the security forces of Nepal. During this war, there were several cases of torture, murder and other serious violations. Even though the war ended in 2006, no one has been accounted for the violations. The police routinely refuse to answer complaints from the victims or their relatives and many of the police investigations were flawed. There has also been some international pressure to bring justice to the crimes. This shows that the government can do a lot better to protect the lives of citizens. Another example is the way the government responded to the April 2015 Earthquake, otherwise known as the Gorkha Earthquake. There were 9000 lives lost and 22 000 people injured. Even though the government knew that the country was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Memes In Richard Dawkins s The Selfish Gene When identifying what a meme is, one should consider the fact that a meme is not just a circulating picture of a cat deemed grumpy. A meme is much more complex in the sense that exist as many different entities ranging from new concepts to new slang words, to even a development of a new behavior that has become popular within a culture. Richard Dawkins, author of the book The Selfish Gene who is also credited for the creation of the word memeticsstates that memes act as units that house ideas, symbols, and behaviors that are distributed from person to person via word of mouth, tv, magazines. According to Dawkins s theory, there is a tremendously positive correlation between cultural evolution and biological evolution. • 6. Langston Hughes Dream Deferred Essay langston huges dream defered After the Civil War won the black people their freedom, it seemed as though their dreams of great opportunities were finally going to come true. However, they were met by even more obstacles, which left the blacks to wonder if their dreams had any chance of occurring, or if they should just give up. In his poem, Harlem, Langston Hughes used increasingly destructive imagery to present his warning of what will happen if you delay working towards your goal. Hughes first two images depict withering and drying, a sense of death. His first example, a dried raisin, conveys that the dream deferred has shriveled into nothing and has no hope of ever happening. The dried raisin, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, since a sore can be irritating and bothering, we can deduce that the dream deferred keeps nagging at the person. This prevents the person from ignoring or forgetting about their dream. The following image, which compares the dream to a sagging, heavy load, shows how burdensome it can be. It s as though the memory of the dream is in the bag, and the disappointment of the dream s impossibility weighs the dreamer down. The dream deferred (bag) is very heavy and onerous. However, if the dreamer carries the bag long enough, they get to enjoy the reward (their dream) waiting inside. The final image used to describe a dream deferred is an explosion. The worsening conditions in Hughes comparisons build up to the final dГ©nouement of a violent explosion. This explosion is all of the pent up emotions, thoughts, and feelings of the dream deferred, which build up inside you until, finally, they are expressed all at once in one big eruption. Throughout the poem Harlem, Langston Hughes wrote with increasingly destructive images to warn of the dangers of postponing your dreams. These images help present the poem s very strong message that a dream deferred can be very painful. The thought of how great the dream is nags at the dreamer s mind until they can no longer bear it. The explosion result of this pestering dream deferred can actually be good for the dreamer. The dreamer may ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. What Is The Difference Between Roark And Peter Keating Howard Roark and Peter Keating s means of achieving success diverge in that Keating assumes the caliber of his outcomes on the approval of others through his application of external guidance whereas Roark disclaims any external sentiment toward his work; he operates independent from the judgement of others and external impacts on his product. In order to evaluate the fortune of these two characters, successmust be delineated. One application of achievement establishes it on the measurement of how well one executes a task, and their procurance. Many gauge their earnings through interactions with others; to an extent, social conditioning generates human dependence. • 9. Primitiveness And Savagery In Joseph Conrad s Heart Of... In Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness , Conrad uses the depictions of the natives as Marlow goes down the river to portray how human nature is with different levels of power. He uses color imagery to correlate the darkskin of the natives to the name of the continent the natives live on, the Dark Continent . He portrays Africa, or the Dark Continent to be a place of primitiveness and savagery. The nature of the natives are primitive and savagetoo. In the same way, he aides the superficial meanings of his description with words that have negative connotations to further his depiction of the natives as primitive and savage. In the beginning when Marlow arrives at the Outer Station, Conrad uses the dead and dying natives to represent what human nature should be and sometimes is on the outside. They were dying slowly it was very clear. They were not enemies, they were not criminals, they were nothing earthly now nothing but black shadows of disease and starvation, lying confusedly in the greenish gloom (Conrad 19). They lack power. Conrad intentionally portrays them as powerless because without power, they aren t a threat. He relates this to the primal feelings of man. Given that the Outer Station is a representation of how people should be on the surface, Conrad represents the natives as the inner savages. The natives are dead and dying because the inner savage is dead or dying in society. We have constructed a society in which the inner savages, aka the natives, have no ... Any discussions made between the lawyer and the consultant are protected by attorney work product privilege allowing both parties to freely exchange information without disclosure to the other side. However, if the consultant has been identified as an expert witness, only then is the work product privilege lifted and their work is discoverable to the opposing counsel (Elmore, D.R.). As an authority in the field, the forensic accountant is brought in during the discovery phase of litigation and begins by evaluating the facts of the case and determining whether a claim is valid. After examining the strengths and weaknesses of the case, the consultant can then advise on the most effective way to present these facts at trial. The forensic consultant is also on board to analyze the arguments made by the opposing attorneys and their expert witnesses and verify the amounts claimed (Elmore, D.R.). If the consultant specializes in damage evaluations, they can help determine within reason how much money the claimant is owed under any circumstances. For example, in a civil lawsuit stemming from a car accident, a forensic accountant can be used to assess the likely loss of past and future earnings asked for by the claimant. Scientists found the first of these odd undersea worms 12 years ago while remotely patrolling the bottom of the ocean. The worms lack teeth and guts; yet they consume bones by secreting an acid that dissolves the bones, and then ingesting the protein and fat through their skin. All variations of the worm seemed to follow the same mating pattern, where hundreds of thirsty boys scramble to attach to a large, stable girl. The first half of the poem appears to speak to an individual s plan: the attachment to the thread, the necessary explanation, the questions. Intuition has been a strong factor in my plans for after high school and it can be confusing for another to understand. It is true, threads are unknowable to outsiders. However, empathy is a way around the barrier. No one needs to understand everything, but humans need to be less narrow minded for everyone to flourish. The title is an unqualified fact of life. Using simplistic words, the title becomes matter of fact. After reading the poem, one would assume the title should include the word thread because of how symbolic it is throughout the work. Stafford knows this feeling is universal; the title indicates the reader will understand. Throughout the poem, the tone remains unvarnished, playing to the logical side of the issue. People will always misunderstand others this is the way it is. By writing The Way It Is is second person, Stafford further explores the universal aspect of explanation. In certain instances, one might think in second person, as possibly reassurance or motivation. Once one disassociates themselves from montra, it can become more powerful, in a way. One reason it is evident that man is inherently evil is because people spread hatred. Social media is used today on a day to day basis, it is such a huge platform for communication and entertainment. This shows how evil man can be because they commit mass murders without a specific reason or outcome simply because man feels hate. If man was born good, then why would they commit mass murders? It clearly shows man is evil because man killed innocent people and a good person would never take someone s life. Also man destroys the world they live in. But much of the evidence seated clearly before us points to an entirely different consensus. As human beings not one of us is born with prejudice or hate in our hearts. • 19. The Effects Of Ozone Depletion The ozone depletion has been well documented to negatively affect planet Earth for years. The ozone is a thin layer of the EarthВґs atmosphere which is responsible for absorbing the sun s harmful ultraviolet light ( What is Ozone Layer?,2017). The loss of ozone on earth will take a toll on human health, plants and marine ecosystems, ultimately resulting in a planet that does not support living things. Today, this manifests in climate change. It is easy for many to confuse these two issues, although they are connected in various ways. Loss of the ozone layer is caused by greenhouse gases such as chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs (compounds with chlorine and/or fluorine attached to carbon), as well as , halons (similar compounds with bromine or iodine) (Jain 2015). These chemicals can stay in the atmospherefor up to 100 years causing damage(What is Ozone Layer?,2017). Greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide, contribute to global warming, which then contributes to climate change by warming the surface and waters. These factors are resulting in a domino effect on our environment. Climate change is classified as an abrupt increase in the Earths temperatures typically caused by human activity (National Aeronautics Space Administration 2016). Human activities that release pollutants in our atmosphere are changing it and contributing to global warming and ozone depletion. After the first and second list appeared, I quickly realized that each list was categorized by theme. This knowledge helped me to organize the words contained in each list. My articulatory rehearsal loop captured words as they were presented, although I only had one chance to say them before another word appeared. Instead of trying to store all twelve words in the articulatory rehearsal loop, I kept track of the theme of the list and applied my prior knowledge of the subject and my schema to the entire list. • 38. Theme Of Friendship In The Outsiders A Story About Friendship, Courage, and Empathy The functions of intellect are insufficient and useless if you are without courage, love, friendship, compassion, and empathy, says a quote by Dean Koontz. Throughout S.E. Hinton s book The Outsiders, there are many themes that she conveys in the book as she narrates the experiences of a greaser named Ponyboy who is a member of the Social group (Socs). Ponyboy meets many people and witnesses many difficult situations throughout the book. This inspirational book teaches the reader crucial lessons that are very important for everyone, even if their lives are not anything like Ponyboy s. Three important themes in the book include friendship, courage and empathy. Friendship is mandatory to be able to trust and rely on one another. Hinton writes about troubles that Ponyboy goes through and how his friends have a great impact on these experiences. For example, Johnny killed Bob who was a member of the Socs, because he saw that Bob along with other Socs were trying to drown Ponyboy. He knew that he d be in trouble, and he could have just left then and there. Instead, he killed Bob because they were hurting Ponyboy. Another situation where the author shows the theme of friendship is when Ponyboy got jumped and his whole gang came to help him. They were always ready to help a member of their group. Also, the situation when the church was on fire and Dally went to try and save Johnny, shows friendship as well. In chapter 6, Jerry, who Ponyboy thinks is one of the school s teachers, says, We think the towheaded kid is going to be all right. He burned one arm pretty badly, though, trying to drag the other kid out of the window, (pg. 95). This tells us that Dally, who at first wouldn t help the children in the church, helped Johnny get out because he was his friend and he cared about him. This shows how Dally demonstrates his friendship. Courage is crucial to be able to overcome obstacles and help others. Courage is a big theme in The Outsiders. For example, Ponyboy showed a lot of courage when he decided to fight in the rumble. He wasn t in good shape as he had lost weight and was very tense. Step eight, turn the paper over and do the same (this is to help you with the next few steps). Step nine, take the flap on the bottom and open it upwards (don t let anything else unfold, though). Step ten, now see the folds you made at step eight on the inside? Slowly push the flap up and fold the left and right corners inside along the crease you made. Step eleven, flip it over and repeat steps nine and ten (by the end it should look somewhat like a kite). Step twelve, open the first left flap and put it to the right. Take the bottom part and bring it to the top and crease it. Now take the flap you just opened and put it back to the left (there should now be two flaps on the right and left). Step thirteen, do the same thing you did to the right (again, there should be two flaps on the right and left by the end of that). Step fourteen, see that big flap in front of you that looks like an upside down V? Fold that down at a 90 degree angle. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Inequality In America And The American Dream Even though U. S is the land of opportunities, it seems just as impossible to achieve the American dream. The American system is controlled by the wealthy who choose, which laws to impose in the benefit for themselves and organization. The inequality between the poor and rich is so wide this makes the American dream for most Americans impossible to achieve. To be wealthy like top 1% of the Americans, you need freedom of choice, an inheritance from rich parents and work hard to achieve the American dream. Before going to my claim, inequality is a interesting topic, which deserves a little attention. Inequality in America has grown over the past and in fact, it is still growing at a very fast rate. In addition, since it is freedom of choice not only does it let us achieve our goals and fulfilment but also it is important whether or not it makes us happy. Most people who are very successful today is because they did what they loved doing what they did. For example, Bill Gates who is the richest person in the world dropped out of Harvard University and started working on his Microsoft software because it was something he loved doing, and now he the richest in the world. By contrast, majorities say freedom of choice in how to live (77%), having a good family life (70%) and retiring comfortably (60%) are essential to their view of the American dream (Samantha 7 13). From this fact we can tell that freedom of choice is very important, that is why we have wealthy people in America. Wish American parents should start allowing their children to make their choices but should be there just to encourage and guide them. To be wealthy like top 1% of the Americans, coming from a rich home inheriting your parent s wealth will increase your chances of being rich. This method of being rich is quite easy because you do not really have to do anything to be rich since you would just inherit your parent s wealth, that is if your parents are very wealthy. When mentioned anything above, you do not really have to work or look for a job because your parents are already wealthy. The only thing you need to worry about is a means of making more money, which might ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. The Living Planet Index ( Lpi ) Over the course of history, many scientist experts have raised the fright and panic about population numbers that only increase every year. According to the Living Planet Report, the Living Planet Index (LPI), which measures more than 10,000 representative populations of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, has declined by 52 per cent since 1970. Population sizes of different species in the world has dropped by at least half. Some of these species are the living things that establishes the fabric of the ecosystems which sustain life on Earth. In the following two centuries, the population increased at an annual growth rate of 6 per 1,000, reaching 2.5 billion by 1950. In the following five decades, it has more than doubled, at a growth rate of 18 per 1,000 to reach more than 6 billion in 2000. The world populationwill reach 8 billion to 10 billion by the year 2030 (Robbins, 130). Today, we are using and taking so much from our ecosystems and natural processes, we are actually exposing and exploiting our own very existence on Earth. Nature preservation and sustainable ecological development complement each other. They are just as much about protecting the future of humanity our well being, economy, food security, and social stability. • 46. George Bush Multilateralism In the days surrounding president George W. Bush s address to the United Nations regarding the political climate in Iraq, Washington had become a whirlpool of two different approaches: unilateralism and multilateralism. After an attempt to appeal to both sides in Washington with his initial address to the UN, George Bush s action of waging an arguably unjustified war against Iraq without assistance from the United Nations can ultimately be explained using realist theory. The dominant approach supported by Bush s Republican party was unilateralism. Assuming the Republicans led by Cheney and Rumsfeld were truly under the impression that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction, while also having ties to international terrorist groups, their wishes were not irrational. The unilateralists felt that every day the United States did not act was another day closer to an attack like 9/11. The main idea behind realism is that war is inevitable, and that the number one ... In the eyes of a regulatory liberalist, international organizations can peacefully facilitate conflicts before they turn into war. The idea was that the inspections teams would find monitor Iraqi facilities to keep Hussein under control. If Saddam did not agree, then war could be waged. The key is seeking alternative means of promoting peace before waging a costly war. Under republican liberalism, democratic states do not wage war under the premise that the citizens pay the costs of war. The multilateralists knew the war and reconstruction of Iraq would be very demanding. With this in mind, they felt it was in the US s best interest if members of the United Nations shared the ... Mass Production and Division of labor is a manufacturing system based upon principles such as interchangeable parts, large scale productions, and the high volume assembly line. In the early 1800s, a man named Josiah Wedgwood started his own pottery business using mass production, they made pottery for Europeans who liked to always keep their tea from porcelain because without the pottery cups the flavor would spoil. He hired many labors to press down the clay, glaze pieces, carry things, while others put handles on cups. Mass Production adapted to make workers more productive using less required skills, while being paid less being able to lower costs of products while boosting quality. Mass Production and Division became the most important structure for manufacturing across the globe, utilizing extreme impact on popular culture. Mechanization was a huge process, that changed work that was done before only by hands or animal s to doing work with new machinery. The cotton thread and weaving for cloth in the 1800s was a main product for these new machines, the cloth was much nicer, softer, and cleaner than any hand made clothing as said in the book wealthy Europeans developed a liking for the costly import. In the dirt yard of the Maxson s house, many relationships come to blossom and wither here. The main character, Troy Maxson, prevents anyone from intruding into his life by surrounding himself around a literaland metaphorical fencethat affects his relationships with his wife, son, and mortality.Throughout the play, readers see an incomplete fence which symbolizes Rose (Troy s wife) and Troy s drifting relationship. Since Troy was fenced out from playing professional baseball, he fences Cory out of playing college football. Troy and Cory s relationship resembles the fence by its purpose and physical attribution. When it comes to sports, they are separated by the different generations, but they come together because of their love of sports. Like a fence that is meant to separate outsiders, but connected to bring together the fence. Troy and Cory s relationship continues to get pushed apart throughout the play. In Act 2, Scene 4 Troy and Cory get into a fight which leads Troy to state to Cory that his things will be on the other side of that fence. When Troy kicks Cory out onto the streets, the fence becomes an actual division between both of them. The two spend a lot of time building the fence, only for it to create a literal and emotional barrier. The fence becomes a representation of the barrier that Troy tries to create between him and mortality. Troy has a fixation on Death. He talks about how Death is an easy fastball on the outside corner (I. i). Troy always speaks about how he could easily knock a baseball out of the park. Comparing Death to a fastball shows how Troy thinks that he can continue to always keep Death on the other side of the fence because like a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. Cognitive Developmental Stages Of Children The well known cognitive developmental psychologist, Jean Piaget, proposed 4 different cognitive stages of human development. Based on his examination and research on children, Piaget determined that these four cognitive developmental stages were associated with the achievement of particular milestones. The first stage of Piaget s cognitive developmental stage is the Sensory Motor Stage. It occurs from birth to 2 years. The second one is the pre operational Stage, which occurs in children aged around 2 to 7. The third stage is concrete operational stage, which children are around age 7 to 11. The final stage is the formal operations stage, which adolescents from the age around 11 to 16 or more. The purpose of this paper is to understand the cognitive stage for children in different age, and how they perform and think logically in each stage. In this paper, I did option 2 on the conservation of liquid task by using Piaget s concrete operational stage and compare how children still in the pre operation stage performed differently. The task was appropriate to compare the two children. My experiment is to test children s ability to conserve liquid, and according to Piaget, children that have not entered the concrete operational stage tend to fail to conserve liquid. People can easily see the differences of logical reasoning between children in these two different stages. The concrete operational stage is Piaget s third stage of children s cognitive development. In this stage, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
