The House Of Bernarda Alba Themes
Freedom and Repression: How opposing themes go hand in hand In the play by Federico Garcia
Lorca, The House of Bernarda Alba, a recurring theme throughout the play is freedom. Lorca
expresses freedom using characters, situations and objects. The characters in the story are
Bernarda s daughters who are under her control and have extremely little freedom and privacy by
being forced to abide by her rules. Freedom and Repression are most significant themes conveyed
throughout the play, the two opposing themes together are important to understanding both the
characters and the story as well. In the beginning of the play the girls are put into an eight year
mourning period by Bernarda because of the death of their father. She... Show more content on

Martirio once had a man interested in her but that opportunity was snatched away from her by
Bernarda. On page 191 Poncia says, Martirio is lovesick, I don t care what you say. Why didn t
you let her marry enrique Humanas? Why, on the very day he was coming to her window did
you send him a message not to come? And Bernarda responded, ... My blood won t mingle with
the Humanas while I live! This is an example of how different Martirio s circumstances were
from Adela and Angustias. Martirio was repressed from her desire for freedom from her mother
and became jealous when her sister s were not denied in the same way. These two themes lead
the characters to believe that escaping one prison will make them free, only to be confined to
another. This is the situation the women in the play recognize as a inner conflict. An example
of this is on page 169 when Amelia says, These days a girl doesn t know whether to have a beau
or not. Additionally, On page 208 Adela says, I can t stand this horrible house after the taste of
his mouth. I ll be what he wants me to be. This quote shows how the girls view men as an escape
from their sheltered home. Men represent freedom as well as repression. For Example, On page
169 it says ... Her sweetheart doesn t let her go out even to the front doorstep. This shows us that
Bernarda s daughters realize if they stay at home forever, they will be controlled by their mother,

Enemy Release Research Paper
Enemy release is perhaps one of the most elementary forms of reasoning behind why a species has
the potential to become invasive in an introduced environment. The enemy release hypothesis
predicts that an exotic species can become invasive upon it introduction as a result of its escape or
release of specialist herbivores. It also predicts that phenotypic plasticity will be displayed similarly
in native and invasive ecotypes and that both ecotypes will behave and respond alike in common
environments (Rogers and Siemann, 2005). This prediction is derived from the understanding that
both native and invasive ecotypes have similar genetic contribution to tissue type and quality
(Rogers and Siemann, 2005). Assuming that specialist herbivores are... Show more content on

In part, this is explained by the novel weapons hypothesis which predicts that invasive plant
species produce chemicals that are novel to generalists of introduced ranges, requiring adaptive
evolution for invasives to become palatable to generalists (Lankau et al., 2004). It is also
generally accepted that invasives tend to alter the soil composition of their introduced ranges
(Zou et al., 2006). In some instances, it is evident that generalists do not feed on invasives in
introduced ranges because they lack the behavioral adaptations necessary to do so (Lankau et
al., 2004). In 2002, a greenhouse study was performed in LaMarque, Texas where grasshoppers
(M. augustipennis) were placed large mesocosms with Triadica and Celtis (common hackberry)
to determine possible behavioral shifts of herbivores when confined to a single food source
(Lankau et al., 2004). In fact, grasshoppers exhibited more herbivory on the exotic Triadica
genotypes when compared to relative consumption of native Celtis genotypes (Lankau et al.,
2004). This study suggests that Triadica sebifera is indeed palatable to generalist herbivores like
grasshoppers in its introduced ranges. Generalists, however, require selective pressure in order to
shift their diets to invasive species like Triadica sebifera (Lankau et al., 2004). Generalist
herbivores display no detrimental effects

Clash Of Kings Symbolism
A Clash of Kings
Was there ever a war where only one side bled? (118) This perspicuous question was raised by
George R.R. Martin, an epic fantasy writer and author of the New York Times bestselling novel, A
Clash of Kings. I chose this novel because I appreciate merciless world building novels such as
Beowulf or Lord of the Rings. Moreover, this novel is the second of the legendary book series
known as A Song of Ice and Fire. This story takes place in a medieval setting with potential for an
endless amount of possibilities. The novel predominately focuses on a variety of families that all
share the common goal of sitting on the Iron Throne. The story is presented from nine separate
points of view, eight of them coming from characters with a royal background. Each character
has a remarkable in depth backstory and a unique reason for their placement in the War of the
Five Kings. The majority of the story occurs in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, where the
Lannisters and the Iron Throne are located. The other portions of the novel take place in Winterfell
with House Stark, Castle Black with Jon Snow, and Essos with Daenerys Targaryen. The novel
picks up immediately where its predecessor, A Game of Thrones, concluded with King Robert
Baratheon s death and the Lord of Winterfell, Eddard Stark s, execution. Accompanied by King
Baratheon and his Hand s death, the position of King was unsecure. Subsequently, rulers of
different origins rise up in an attempt to conquer the Seven

John Bowlby s Attachment Theory
Applications of Theories on Precious Precious is a movie based on the novel Push by Sapphire
(Daniels and Fletcher, 2008). It is on the life of an illiterate 16 year old African American girl,
Claireece Precious Jones. (Natividad, 2010). I have applied John Bowlby s Attachment Theory
and Erik Erikson s Theory of Psychosocial Development on the film. These theories helped
identify an understanding of the characters, family group, and community in the film. I have
primarily assessed Precious as the chosen character. This paper will analyze the many factors in
assessing her human behavior. The main character of the movie is Claireece Precious Jones who
often went by her middle name Precious. She lived a life of abuse and suffering since a

Victims Of Criminal Activity
Every year, thousands of immigrants are victims of criminal activity. Significant factors that
contribute to this violence, never to be reported are language barrier, fear of deportation, cultural
differences, and fears of the unfamiliar. In 2000 the Congress passed a law known as the Victims
of Trafficking and Violence Prevention Act. (Victims of criminal activity, n.d.). The U.S. Congress
created this law as a form of immigration relief that is available aliens who are victims. The
Congress wanted to aid law enforcement in investigating and prosecuting human traffickingby
providing a way for alien victims to remain in the U.S. to assist in an investigation. Through the
whole process the victim is working very closely with an officer. Victims... Show more content on

It is critical for the applicant to stay in the U.S. for a continuous period of three years. If the
person departures out of the country they may lose the eligibility to apply for a green card and in
my experience this was very difficult to accomplish. (Green card for a victim of a crime (u
nonimmigrant), n.d.). A victim cannot unreasonably refuse to provide evidence or refuse to help
with the investigation. However, there are circumstances where the victim does not have to help
with the investigation and that is in a case where the victim is severely traumatized either mentally
or physically. (Immigration relief for vulnerable aliens: t and u visas, n.d.). The last requirement is
to establish presents in the United States, to ensure family unity. In reality, this specific
requirement is a lot of paperwork. The victim must submit a proof of work; proof of residence
with a copy of the lease and proof of paying rent on time. Additionally affidavits from friends, co
workers are instrumental in showing that the victim is a person of good character and it would be
in the best interest for the community and the country to grant a permanent residency to the victim.

Analysis Of A Simple Heart
Taneka .D.G. Evelyn
ENG 212 042
Dec.12th, 2011
The realist period was a time of the nineteenth century in which authors, artists and other people in
literature provided in depth accounts of events that occurred during that time period. In Gustave
Flaubert s A Simple Heart, he explored the lives of two fictional women of different classes
(middle and lower) during the realist period. Through characters like Madame Aubain, a rich woman
and Felicite, her poor, gentle maid, he provided the reader with a sneak peek of nineteenth century
France.
The first sentence of A Simple Heart gives the reader an ironic insight of the protagonist Felicite.
It states Madame Aubain s servant Felicite was the envy of the ladies of Pont l Г‰vГ«que for
half a century (2208, A Simple Heart).By giving a brief synopsis of the protagonist, it makes the
reader wonder why was she the envy of the other women around her. She was serving another
woman. What was there to envy? Flaubert must have done this on purpose to get the reader to put
a price on happiness. Even the words used to describe the other women ladies would bring a great
deal of doubt to the reader.
Flaubert introduced the seemingly simpler character, Felicite first, with a rather vivid and
detailed description. He portrayed her as a woman that was different from the others. Being a
maid, Felicite was not expected to be complex and Flaubert did her much justice. He described
She rose at daybreak to be in time for Mass, and worked till evening without stopping. Then, when
dinner was over, the plates and dishes were in order, and the door shut fast, she thrust the

log under the ashes and went to sleep in front of the heath with a rosary in her
hand (2209, A Simple Heart). He made her seem very uniformed, as though she had nothing
important to do. She appeared religious and organized but lacked that complexity that comes with
being a woman. The routine was the same and therefore proved that a woman of lower class was
bounded to the house.
Felicite became so accustomed to her routine that she decided to stay in the house to the very end.
According to

What We Knew Research Paper
There are several reasons as to why Germans were the perpetrators. Some of those reasons
include, the emancipation of the Jews, economy, and Hitler rising to power. In my essay, I will
be referring to two book. Why? By Peter Hayes and What We Knew, by Eric A Johnson and Karl
Heinz Reuband. First I will be discussing the emancipation of the Jews. Peter Hayes mentions how
the emancipation was part of the French import (Hayes,39). Of course, many Germans were not
happy about this. For example, Johann Gottlieb Fichte. On page thirty nine, it states Now he flatly
argued that making Jews free German citizens would hurt the German nation and identified
antisemitism with German patriotism (Hayes, 39). This already sets the standard for having
Germans think that anti Semitism is being proud of your country. In 1819, riots came into play.
They were violent and took place in Wurzburg and Frankfurt. The ones who started the riots were
craftsmen and merchants who were angry of the potential competitions against the Jews if they
were allowed to be citizens. There was still... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is supported by Johnsons book. On page 149, a testimony says, Whenever something went
wrong or was obviously wrong, people tended to blame it on the underlings (Johnson, 149). He
involved every age group. Even the kids. Most of the testimonies from Johnson s book involved
the Hitler Youth. Hubert Lutz said, if you did something really nasty, you were not allowed to
wear your scarf and your dagger and that meant that you were like an outcast (Johnson,143).
Another testimony by Rolf Herberer said this about the Hitler Youth, the Hitler Youth were always
making trips somewhere. One felt like part of a community (Johnson, 153). This shows how
prideful they were about being a part of Hitler s Youth. Establishing that union feeling drew in a
lot of people due to feeling separated after the loss of World War

Argumentative Essay About Public Transportation
It was a summer morning and I boarded the bus alone for the first time. I was not on the school
bus, but rather the RTA. I was one of the first people on the bus, and I sat in a comfortable blue
seat halfway down the center aisle. My first RTA experiences started when I was a young boy,
with my parents of course, but this past summer I rode alone on my way to Saint Ignatius High
School for a summer camp. I learned how to navigate the cityof Clevelandand how to use the
convenient public transportation that Cleveland offers. When some of my friends and family heard
that I was riding inner city public transportation their reactions were concerned, surprised, and
sometimes even appalled. Many people read or see reports about crime in the inner... Show more

their children ride. It is very important to realize that, yes, there will be bad people, but for every
bad person there s always at least one good person who is willing to help. I ve had many
experiences on the RTA and even ridden public transportation in other countries, and I think the
biased opinion that public transportation is unsafe is an unfair description even after this most
recent experience. For some reason people worry about those intimidating figures on public
transportation when they re just as large of a threat anywhere else. There are aggressive citizens
everywhere, but there are also citizens who are willing to assist. Unfortunately, sometimes people
only see and remember those few intrusive ones when they are downtown or in an urban setting
and then form false opinions about an entire group of people. We need to realize that people in
urban areas even if they may be homeless, without work, or just less fortunate than we are, are not
all intrusive and threatening. These people are just as human as we are and it is irrational to think
that they are less than we

How Does Shelley Use Language
Shelley uses a wide range of language to describe the weather. To begin with the rain not only
falls, but it patters dismally . The negative feeling that surrounds this word forebodes that
something bad is going to happen; making the reader anxious and alert. It reflects the adverse tone
and mood in this section of the extract. Similarly, the night is described with the adjective dreary .
Together, the cumulative effect of these words creates a semantic field of a sense of danger which
only adds further to this already tense (atmosphere) part of the extract.
Furthermore, Shelley uses pathetic fallacy, using setting, to reflect Dr Frankenstein s mood. Shelley
s use of grim weather, with which rain pattered dismally foreshadows and reflects

Puerto Rico Imperialism
The international perception of Puerto Rico as an American colony a failed economy or a
misunderstood predicament of colonization
Since the end of the Spanish American War in 1898 the United States has proclaim the
Commonwealth of Puerto Rico under United States territory. Spain handed Puerto Rico over to the
United States as spoil of war and to liquidate its war debts. To this day, the political, economic, and
cultural impact of the occupation and subsequent annexation of Puerto Rico as an unincorporated
territory remains subject to controversy and debate. The real polemic of this idea resides on the
influence of the United States to held full responsibility for military, monetary, and foreign affairs.
The Popular Democratic Party, led by Luis MuГ±oz MarГn, and the United States in 1952 adopted
Puerto Rico s current Commonwealth status as a global wave of decolonization. Even if this create
the local government and the Constitution that will always be subject to be veto from Congress. In

Fa Mu Lan, Brave Orchid
The Women Warriors
Warriors come in all shapes and sizes, including Chinese women. Growing up in America,
Maxine Hong Kingston does not know what kind of Chinese girl to be. She is conditioned to
expect to be a wife or a slave, but she dreams of the warrior she knows she could be. The warrior
motif is an extremely important part of Hong Kingston s memoir, referring as it does to Fa Mu
Lan, Brave Orchid, and Hong Kingston, herself. All three of these women display their inner
warrior by defying the traditional cultures of what is expected of Chinese women.
Fa Mu Lan is a genuine woman warrior because she proves that Chinese women can be capable,
and at the same time, fulfill the duties of a traditional Chinese woman. Hong Kingston is careful
to point out that Fa Mu Lan is a warrior and a woman, not one or the other. By becoming a war
hero, Fa Mu Lan has not given up being a woman. She put[s] on [her] men s clothes and armor ...

As a little girl, Hong Kingston has trouble speaking, but throughout the book, she eventually
finds her voice. This is most apparent when she is finally able to stand up to her mother and
declare her list. Hong Kingston writes that once she started speaking, the words kept pouring
out (200). Not only does Hong Kingston have an epiphany regarding her power of speech, but she
also proves that she will not grow up only to be a wife or slave, she too is a warrior. Also, Hong
Kingston uses her power with words to write her book, The Woman Warrior. Through selectively
compiling stories, Hong Kingston has the power to choose which stories define her. She can
write her own story differently, to give a different spin on it, and to remember it as she wishes it

Examples Of Archetypes In The Odyssey
Adam and Eve, the first people on earth according to the bible, were tempted a lot by the snake
or the devil. One of the tricks that Satan had used was on Eve. God had warned adam and Eve
not to eat the one fruit off of the one tree. While eve was out she had went by the tree, and a
snake caught her attention. This snake turned out to be the devil, and had told Eve to just get a
taste of the fruit. Eve was curious and she took a bite. Now god was after Adam and Eve. They tried
to hid behind a bush from god but god had found them, and then they repented. In Homer s epic

Genetic Disease And Its Effects On The Body
Introduction Genetic diseases are being discovered more often as we learn the affects that genes
have on the body. McArdle s disease is a metabolic disease that affects skeletal muscle because of
a gene mutation. The genetic mutation prevents the creation of the enzyme myophosphorylase.
This enzyme is responsible for the breakdown of glycogen in muscles (Haldeman Englert, 2014).
McArdle s disease is also known as Type V Glycogen Storage Disorder. It affects approximately one
out of every 100,000 people ( McArdlesDisease.org, n.d.). Glycogen is broken down into glucose,
which is used to produce adenosine triphosphatefor muscleenergy. Patients can live relatively
normal lives with this disease once proper care and education has been provided (Kitaoka, 2014).
Genetic Nature McArdle s disease is seen as muscle dysfunction caused by a mutation in the gene
that codes for the enzyme myophosphorylase. The myophosphorylase gene, PYGM, is located at
chromosome 11q13 (Kitaoka, 2014). There have been over 100 mutations of the gene detected. In
North American Caucasians, the mutation commonly found is the p.R50X (Kitaoka, 2014). In
Japanese patients, it is found to be the p.F709del/F710de mutation (Kitaoka, 2014). Researchers
have seen a correlation between ethnicity and the type of mutation of that they carry. All the
mutations cause a lack of the myophosphorylase enzyme in the muscle tissue. It is found to be an
autosomal recessive inheritance trait. Those who are heterozygotes

The Design of Life
The Design of Life God or Evolution?
Life has indeed been designed, but by whom or what is the central controversy. Creationists
believe it was an intelligent designer, namely, God; evolutionists believe it was a driving force of
nature, namely, natural selection. Natural selection works when life forms with advantageous
survival traits live long enough to breed, therefore passing on those traits to the next generation.
Life forms with weaker traits die before breeding, and therefore disappear from the gene pool.
Genetic diversity results in slight variations of these hereditary traits from generation to generation,
which allows a species to adapt to the changing demands of a changing environment. This results in
a suitability ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The problem is one of choosing the correct analogy. He pointed out that the universe more
resembles a living organism than a mechanical watch which indicates that the universe must have
started as a fetus in a cosmic womb! Other scholars also lampooned Paley s argument; Voltaire
argued that noses must have been designed to hold up glasses, and that bunny rabbits must have
been given white tails so they could be easier to shoot. The idea of design was so thoroughly and
effectively ridiculed that theologians of the time actually stopped using it as an argument, although,
curiously enough, it would resurface in the 20th century.
Darwin essentially agreed that life had been designed, although not necessarily by the designer that
Paley evoked. Darwin s advance on the argument was that the designer did not have to be an
intelligent being, but could also be a driving force of nature. Consider the example of horse
breeding. A rancher can select any trait among his horses that he would like to emphasize for
example, small size. By breeding his smallest horses together, he will eventually obtain a line of
miniature horses. Evolutionists cite this as proof that species can change as a result of selective
breeding. Creationists respond quite rightly that the process needs a designer, in this case the
rancher. But evolutionists point out that the same process happens in nature. Imagine a land
separated by a mountain range a thousand miles long.

Exploring The Benefits And Difficulties Of Travel Accounts
To understand the benefits and difficulties of travel accounts as primary sources, they need to be
clearly defined and placed into their context. The main primary sources in I will be studying are
British travel accounts produced between 1790 and 1800. Tim Young provides the basics for
travel accounts stating, The guiding principle of this book is that travel writing consists of
predominantly factual, first person prose of travels that have been undertaken by the author
narrator. It includes discussion of works that some may regard as genre in their own rights... but
it distinguishes these from other types of narrative in which travel ins narrated by a third party or
is imagined. Young s description of travel narratives allows for accounts that were viewed as
accurate in their time such as Jonathan Swift s Gulliver s Travels. Young and Elizabeth Bohls
demonstrate the ability for travel narratives to be a combination of several literature genres, and
the focus is on the aspects of the traveler rather than the construction of the work in a literary sense.
Linda Colley described the process of analysis the documents, But it needs stressing from the start
that, while these texts sometimes contain fictional interludes, together of course with a tithe of lies
and errors, their overall factual anchorage can usually be tested. Colley s testing involves
comparing accounts and checking references to outside sources and events. This also involves also
being critical with those

The Road to Hell
Case Summary
The case Road to Hell by Gareth Evans is a story that involved two characters with different
backgrounds, personalities and points of view. John Baker, an English expatriate, is a successful

Baker thinks he has an edge in working in a foreign country because he was experience in
understanding a regional staff s psychology and knowing exactly how to get along with locals.
Bakers has been working hard to prepare Matthew Rennalls, on the other hand, is a young engineer

of growth. Rennalls resignation might also create crisis communication within Barracanian and
European which the Barracanian would think that the racism of European had caused the resignation
of Rennalls. Therefore, the misunderstanding will continue to rise. Baker should also make another
discussion or meeting with Rennalls before hiring him back. This step should be taken to explain
the misunderstanding that happened and also to prevent another similar incident to happen again.
However, the consultation is needed for Baker to build up a better communication skills before
having a conversation with Rennalls again.
Long term Create a Diverse and Peaceful Work Environment
The Caribbean Bauxite Company should organize the company in a diverse and fair working
environment. Firstly, the company should evaluate the employees based on their performance but
not their skin colour, culture and background. The company should give a chance to every
employee that has high performance and high interpersonal skills without any bias. A diverse
environment must be created by include people which from different culture and background. A
consultation on communication skills to every employee also needed to improve the
communication skills among them.

Recurring Scaffold In The Scarlet Letter
The Recurring Scaffold Through day and night, the scaffold is a place of punishment, awaiting its
next victim. People pass by wondering who the next victim is going to be. This public punishment
causes many to change and work to preserve their reputation. Despite this, the scaffold turns into a
constant place of punishment, in The Scarlet Letterby Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hester s love for
Dimmesdale and Dimmesdale s cowardicehold significant meanings in the novel, which lead up
to Dimmesdale gaining a more mature mindset. Specifically, Hester s punishment portrays her
love for Dimmesdale in the first scaffold scene. Hester refuses to reveal the name of the father in
spite of everyone asking her. Dimmesdale tells Hester to reveal the name by saying, Be not
silent from any mistaken pity and tenderness for him; for, believe me, Hester, though he were to
step down from a high place, and stand there beside thee, on thy pedestal of shame, yet better
were it so, than to hide a guilty heart through life, (63) to explain that it is better for Hester to
reveal the name of the father than to keep it to herself. By telling her not to remain silent due to
any pity and tenderness for him , and telling her to allow him to step down from a high place and

Benefits Of The Individual Environment And The Team...
The idea to succeed can only go so far, it is the paths chosen that can make the end result a
success, or a failure. We all want to succeed, but as a leader you have to determine what
approach to make. Shall I take on this idea alone, or should I create a group to assist me, whatever
it takes to succeed, right? Some ideas can be accomplished by an individualalone, but usually
bigger ideas need a team to see it through. Working in a team environment can have its drawbacks,
but it also has many benefits. In this paper I am going to provide research to support the setbacks
and benefits of both the individual environment and the team environment. I found that what an
individual may lack is a team s gain, vice versa. The important result is the success achieved by
either a team, or an individual. In the International Journal of Psychology, the authors described a
team as being collectivism. In the journal article Presence of Others and Task Performance in Japan
and the United States: A Laboratory Investigation, the research was not only testing the effects of
the different cultures on job productivity and job quality, but they were also focusing on the effects

Collaboration Reflection Paper
The perfect example of this situation is when we had to change labs for our advanced lab testing
portion related to the Partner for Health program. Originally we used HDL labatory however due
to some recent bad press we no longer felt this lab was a reliable option. We had to re assure both
the patients and the client that they would recieve the same quality of testing that they were use
to with previous lab draws. As part of choosing a labatory, I reseached labs that offered similar
advanced lab testing. I then sent the top three labs a proposal along with a list of questions. The
questions were based on level of service, customer satisfation, flexibilty, and a request for data
supporting population health research. Based on these responses... Show more content on

explained the lab comparison that needed to be captured. I also met with their lipid specialists
to ensure that their test panel would closely mirror the test previously performed by HDL. For
those test that appeared differently, I had the specialists put together explainations to supply to
our staff, clients, and patients. To test the overall response to the change in the lab, I had the
first labs drawn at a board retreat where only 20 members were impacted instead of the 1200
enrollees. This allowed me to gather facts on a smaller spectrum and to make corrections before
we have all of the participants present for the lab draws. Some of the information received from
this test group was not positive but it was easily corrected. The things that needed to be addressed
were based on knowlegde deficit and a lack of communication between the client and our company

address these issues and to also combat the likelihood of any additional critical

Comparing The Pit And The Pendulum By Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe is known for his deep and dark short stories. He is also known for being the
greatest literary author of all time. Poe was a mysterious man that combined all his traits into one
story. All of Poe s stories had some sort of darkness to them, some used a little bit of love and
romance, but all lead to the same result usually.
In Poe s story The Pit and the Pendulum, it expresses torture and despair, almost to the point of
where all hope is gone. In this story, an unnamed narrator is taken for prisoner and is placed in a
dark and deep dungeon in Spain. The narrator wakes up in the dungeon thinking it is a tomb and
starts to feeling around the dungeon not knowing where he is at. There were judges watching him
and the narrator almost falls to his death in the middle of the dungeon. The narrator tripped and his

Poe always tries to catch your attention in the first sentence or few. True! nervous very, very
dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad ?(Poe). The author
attempts to grab the reader s attention to question why the story begins with that and makes the
reader keep on reading. Poe also writes like he is talking to the reader directly, Poe questions the
reader and points stuff out and uses foreshadowing. Now this is the point. You fancy me mad.
Madmen know nothing. But you should have seen me. You should have seen how wisely I
proceeded (Poe). This is only in the third paragraph in the story and Poe has already grabbed the
reader s attention and has hinted on what he is about to do. This use of this technique Poe uses the
best along with suspense and horror. The Tell Tale Heartexpresses and goes into the mind of the
narrator from planning out his killing, to when he hears the old man s heart in the floor when it is
actually his own. This is one of Poe s best work of literature from it s unique type of

Autistic Spectrum Disorder
Autistic spectrum disorder, otherwise known as autism, is a complex disorder of the central
nervous system and a developmental disability that comes from a neurological disorder that affects
the normal functioning of the brain. (Dowshen, 2008). It is not something one can catch or pass
along to someone else. It makes interacting with other people incredibly difficult. Autismwas first
identified in 1943 by Dr. Leo Kanner of Johns Hopkins Hospital. Autism spectrumdisorder can
usually be reliably diagnosed by age 3, however new research is pushing back the age of
diagnosis to as early as six months. Autism is a developmental disorder that makes it very difficult
for one to communicate with others and live a normal life. (What is... Show more content on

A very good amount of autistic children have very bad tempers. As a result, numerous parents end
up quitting their jobs to care for their autistic child. (Packard, 2009). Many people with autism also
have other disorders of the central nervous system, such as developmental disabilities, epilepsy, or
schizophrenia. However, not all children with autism are severely impacted. Autism persists
through a person s lifetime, although many people are able to learn to control and modify their
behavior to some extent. Some people are affected fairly mildly; several of these individuals learn
to live independent lives. Others more severely affected, require lifelong care and supervision.
(Dowshen, 2008). Most families of autistic children also learn to get support from their parents and
other children with autism. Some children with mild autism will grow up and be able to live on
their own. Those with problems that are more serious will always need some kind of help, but all
kids with autism have brighter futures when they have support and understanding from their
doctors, teachers, caregivers, parents, brothers, sisters, and friends. (Dowshen, 2008). At this point
in time there is no cure for autism, but doctors, therapists, and special teachers can help kids with
autism overcome or adjust to many difficulties they have to face. The earlier a child starts treatment
for autism, the better because the best results are

Greek Beliefs In Ancient Greek Mythology
Greek mythology is one of the most interesting topics to come out of ancient Greek culture. The
idea of sincerely believing that every move or choice that is made all goes back to the gods and
goddesses fascinates me. In ancient Greece, the normal thing was to believe in multiple higher
powers instead of today were majority dictates that there is only one higher power. I was aware of
some facts about the Greek s belief in the god and goddesses from previous history classes but I
have never at the freedom to choose to write a paper solely on them. The goal of my research was
to find out what made the gods and goddesses so special to the Greeks and why a civilization
would worship them for centuries.
The start of believing in the gods and goddesses started as a way to explain daily life and to give
life a purpose . Without a reason for living majority of people would descend into madness with
no morals. Unlike other religions that had a holy text, mythology was based primarily on word of
mouth. The stories were passed down from generation to generation to create the outlandish but
captivating mythology that we have in modern society. While there were countless gods and
goddesses, students do typically learn the 12 that are called the Olympian Gods . This group was
led by Zeus, who is perhaps is the most well known Greek god. The next 11 were named as
followed, Athena, Apollo, Poseidon, Hermes, Hera, Aphrodite, Demeter, Ares, Artemis, Hades,
Hephaistos, and Dionysus. I have attached a family tree to help showcases how majority of the
gods and goddesses were related . Each god had their own followers and were all considered the
god of something. For example, Athena is known as the Goddess of Wisdom and Hades is the
God of the Dead or God of the Underworld. Greek citizens built large temples to honor a particular
god where the god was thought to live.
Within these temples, religious ceremonies were not held as we hold mass in a church. Instead,
the temple for each god and goddess were considered the living place of whoever it was built in
honor to. The most notable would the be the temple to Athena which is showcased in the photo to
the left . In each temple, a statue of the god was placed for worshipers to live

Egypt and Mesopotamia Essay
Kate Ward
Per. 3
9/11/13
River Valley civilizations were the first to occur throughout time. Two of the most advanced were
Egypt and Mesopotamia. Although both had a male dominant government that was supported by a
patriarchal king or leader, Egypt had a strong, centralized government whereas Mesopotamia was
decentralized and was based upon small city states operating independently. To add, Egyptwas also
classified as self sufficient rather than Mesopotamia who relied on trade because of unstable
agriculture. Due to Egypt surpassing Mesopotamia in areas such as governmental structure, self
sufficiency, and cultural traditions, Egypt proves to be the more advanced society. Environmental

With all these surrounding them, invasion wasn t such a prime concern, so they evolved a
complex and hearty view towards the afterlife. Religion was then tied into government, making
it all the more significant because pharaohs were viewed as god like and were considered to be
ultimate rulers. Citizens then realized that much more is at stake for an act of wrongdoing.
However, in Mesopotamian culture, death was simply foreseen as an eternal sleep and was the
given the name Land of No Return that held no importance and did not have any affect when
involved with government. All in all, geography affected the natural occurrences to the
civilizations as well as the frequency of invasion, the evolvement of strong cultural beliefs, and
self sufficiency. The culture in both Mesopotamia and Egypt influenced both civilizations.
However, Egypt s culture had a significant and drastic impact on the governmental structure.
Egypt was claimed to be a theocracy, so the behavior of residents was caused by the pharaoh who
was the source of all law throughout the region and was classified to be a god. This idea ties in
adequately with the idea of Egypt being a centralized type of government. Their leaders were
worshipped and praised respectfully so whatever the pharaoh decided was seen to be morally
correct or important and was to be followed by society. On the other hand, Mesopotamia had a
decentralized government that had little to no relationship with

Irene Williams Suicide
Yesterday, my father took me to the flat of Irene Williams. It was a beautiful little place, with big
windows looking out upon the busy street. She had lace curtains, a small pink couch made of
velvet, and a birch coffee table. On the table was a jar full of biscuits and a cup of tea, still hot. She
had pictures of friends, family, and relatives hung up on her walls. It s a shame I never got to meet
Irene, she seems like such a lovely person to talk to. But Irene Williams is dead, and let s face it,
dead people are boring to talk to. They never listen.

Similar to postmodern art, Faith Ringgold s work appropriates unmistakable imagery and other
artistic practices to offer basic social editorial. She provokes us to consider expectations for gender
and race, and in addition customary desires and estimations of what art may be. Through picture
and content, Ringgold changes history to make a place for women like herself in its historical

the focal picture utilizing acrylic paint on canvas, mirroring her insight into western art history in
both style and topic, and encompasses it with an interwoven fabric that incorporates her

Construction and Demolition Waste
Briefing Paper: Construction and Demolition Waste
Construction and demolition waste (CDW) is a significant issue in New Zealand. Teo and
Loosemore (2001) maintain: Levels of waste within the construction industry need to be reduced for
environmental and economic reasons. Changing people s wasteful behaviour can make a
significant contribution (pp.741). This paper defines the CDW issue, significant stakeholders,
relevant ethical theories and costs.
CDW has increased as construction volumes have risen generally, and following natural disasters.
For example, the Canterbury Earthquakes generated a major increase in CDW. Major damage to
buildings, rock falls and landslips, liquefaction and major infrastructure damage has left an
estimated $7.1 billion [Earthquake Commission] EQC bill, says Mackenzie (2011 pp.33). The
Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA, n.d.) estimated 8 million tonnes of CDW.
CERA (n.d.) points to the construction industry and local authorities working together to find and
quickly implement new solutions for recycling or reusing waste.
More generally, Level Organisation (2013) noted that demolition and construction processes are
the most significant producer of waste as opposed to other stages of buildings lives. Much CDW
is seen to be preventable: Most of this dumping of construction waste is unnecessary it has been
demonstrated that simply by sorting waste, at least half of it could be diverted from landfills (Level
Organisation, 2013).

Penny Synthesis
United states produces 13 billion pennies each year. The Penny coin in America played a role to
our economy/without people noticing too much. People most likely don t recognize it due to

our coins system because the prices would be rounded(making prices mostly going up), the penny

Producing the penny is job for many americans in the US hired by the government. If you use
their time better by tracking counterfeiters, all it does is need for more jobs. Which is good for
the US, if we have more people working and collecting weekly paycheck, then US won t have to
worry about Welfare growing(saving moneyfor the US). Plus with people earning more money
from jobs, they will spend more and the government makes more money. This is best case
scenario for everyone because people get jobs and money while government spends less on
welfare and more tax money! Our economy could get out of this debt America is facing because
if we can t deal with it now, then its major problem in the future happening. This helps our present

The Penny?, (Source E). Yes, but if you dig deeper into the data, it states that the lower earning
class wanted to save the money more because they knew what the penny impact on price. Don t
let that confuse you because every earning class asked, stated penny should be kept. 23% of the
people wanted to get rid of it while 59% wanted to keep and 18% not decided.

Reconstruction and its failures, successes, and its overall logistics. Another common debate
concerning the Reconstruction period is its purpose and what the intentions of its instigators were.

of society. It was to this grand work of national regeneration and entire purification Congress

his pardons and the 10% plan continued to readmit states to the union. Louisiana, Tennessee,

Congress had to overcome the obstacles previously faced in order to see its goals fulfilled. The
previous session left some large holes in the policies established. President Johnson had
previously inhibited the acts of Congress and the Congressmen were reluctant to make such bold

Al Shabaab Research Paper
Armed with a militia of young Islamic zealots, a fully fledged intelligence service, and a
government that is complete with propaganda and taxation departments, the terrorist cell of Al
Shabaab poses a legitimate and durable threat to Somalia. With its sophisticated level of
organization and management, Al Shabaab has been able to absorb setbacks and still persist; they
astutely navigated the Somalian Civil War and emerged strong enough to capture vast swaths of
territory. Consequently, even though they have ceded some territory since then, Al Shabaab now
enjoys a deeply entrenched position of influence in Somalia and Mogadishu. Essentially, while Al
Shabaab s control in Mogadishu has been mitigated by the African Union s forces they still... Show

Early in July, Al Shabaab assassinated a police chief in Mogadishu with a car bomb, assaulted
the Defense Ministry with gunfire, and fired mortar rounds at the presidential palace. In
addition to these political targets, Al Shabaab also inflicts scores of civilian casualties in their
attacks as well. In the first week of July, a roadside bomb near Mogadishu exploded on a
minibus, killing two persons and injuring six others. The next day, a grenade was tossed into a
crowd of men and women who were cleaning a market in Mogadishu, killing two individuals.
Although Al Shabaab did not immediately claim responsibility, it is strongly believed that they
perpetrated the attack in response to the participation of women in this work force which opposes
Al Shabaab s fundamentalist islamic views on women being homemakers. Moreover, on
Wednesday July 26th, six government soldiers were killed. Also, on July 30th, Al Shabaab
ambushed a convoy of African Union troops, killing between eighteen and thirty nine soldiers.
Then, on the same day, Al Shabaab detonated a massive car bomb next to a police station in
Mogadishu which killed at least six civilians and police officers and injured 13

The Theme of Violence in Cage Bird, Giving Blood, Sand...
This semester in American Literature I have read and analyzed various literary works. The
reoccurring theme throughout the works is violence. I have came to the conclusion that the
significance of violence throughout the various works is that the group or individual singled out
throughout the works is the victim of violence because the enemy has something to gain from the
victim. The literary works, Caged Bird, Giving Blood, Sand Creek, and An Episode of War
demonstrate this.
For example, Caged Bird by Maya Angelou demonstrates how a personal struggle can become a
form of violence. Angelou, an African American has a troubled childhood and as a result of her
parents divorce she is sent to live with her grandmother at a young age. ... Show more content on

Historically there have been racial tensions between white s and Native Americans. This resulted
in massacres of Native American s. The violence reflected in this short story is the denial of the
blood donation of the man and the massacre of the Native Americans by white s. The massacre
was a gain for white s because it eliminated the Native American s who were seen as a threat to the
white s way of life.
Another example of discrimination resulting in violence is reflected in the poem Sand Creek, by
Simon Ortiz. The poem is told from the point of view of an Indian who reflects on the brutality of
Indian deaths by the Anglos. The poem is a historical reference to the Sand Creek massacre, which
occurred in 1864 when a US military militia massacred a group of Indians who presented
themselves as friendly near a fort. At the conclusion of the poem the author emphasizes that things
will improve stating that, There are flowers, and new grass, and a spring wind rising from Sand
Creek (2). The author also states that things will change for the people of Indian decent. The
violence throughout the poem is the Anglos massacring the Indians just because they could.
Finally, in An Episode of War, by Stephen Crane an army lieutenant experiences the reality of war
first hand. In the short story, an army lieutenant is

The Day Will Come That You Won T Be Analysis
Similar to gothic literature, one of the scenes in The Day Will Come That You Won t Be has a
biblical parallel. In this scene, the characters follow part of the story of Abraham and Isaac. In
the show, Negan fulfills the role of God (which he would, undoubtedly, appreciate), Rick is
Abraham, and Carl is Isaac. Negan demands a personal sacrifice of Rick that will protect other
people, but cause profound damage to his son and himself. Negan demands fulfillment up until
Rick has resigned himself to cutting of Carl s arm. Negan does not need Rick to actually
complete the act, he just needs Rick to accept his domination. It functions not only as a test of
Rick s sense of duty to his people and the power of his fear, but also makes Rick grateful to
Negan. In a very twisted way, Negan saves Carl by sparing him from the fate Negan had
demanded of him. It is a little different than the original story, Negan comes out of the situation
with Rick s obedience, fear, and maybe some reverence. Maybe it s not so different after all.... Show

Analysis Of The Book The Namesake
The Namesake was published in September 2003 by Jumpa Lahiri and the movie was released
in March 9, 2007, directed by Mira Nair. The story includes the portrayal of being raised in two
different cultures, search of identity, and difficulty between family. Through the novel Gogol is
in the situation of building his character within two cultures. In the story he is raised to follow
his mother and father s culture and also brought upon into the American culture. The theme of
identity begins in chapter 3, where Gogol begins kindergarten. Gogol is explained that when
entering school, he will not be enrolled as Gogol, but as Nikhil. Not only is this a respectable
name, a good name, which his parents have finally decided on, just in time for him to begin his
formal education. (Lahiri56) AShoke and Ashiman, Gogol s decide to give him that name
because it is rather easy for Americans to pronounce. The perspective of Gogol s parents to the
name Nihkil was with good intentions of his future. Although tension begins to rise when Gogol
informs his teacher that he did not want to be called by the name Nikhil, but by Gogol. As
Gogol claimed his original name during the first day of school, Mrs. Lapidus acted upon it. At
the end of the first day he is sent home with a letter to his parents from Mrs. Lapidus, folded and
stapled to a string around his neck, explaining that due to their son s preference he will be known
as Gogol at school. (Lahiri60) When Mrs. Lapidus sends a note home

Many business setups nowadays have their staff and experts spread out across various location.
While occasional business meetings, which require traveling are also quite common. Many
organizations now realize the competitive advantage, which video conferencing offers. Products
being developed are being promptly introduced to the market, issues are resolved more quickly,
everyone who is a participant in the decision does not have to travel just to be in a meeting
(Denstadli, Gripsrud, Hjorthol, Julsrud, 2013). Business communication is vital for businesses to
maintain competitiveness. Videoconferencing eliminates the barriers of business communication
and enables employees in different locations to view body languages, facial expressions and listen
to voices. Video conferencing makes business communication vivid and easy, it will make it
productive. Therefore, especially when doing business around the world, it is essential to have a
video conference for business communication (Denstadli, Julsrud, Hjorthol, 2012). The initial
quantifiable and perceived gain of video conferencing was a reduction in travel expenses. Initially,
many organizations paid for travel budget reduction and video conference deployment. Travel
savings were a visible advantage of video conferencing, but there are more qualitative advantages.
Other major benefits that video conferencing offers are increased efficiency and productivity,
enhanced business opportunities and better management

Are Race Car Drivers Athletes
Are Race Car Drivers Athletes? When people hear the word athlete, the first people they
probably think of are athletes like Reggie Bush, Kevin Garnett, or Sidney Crosby. The last kind
of person that is probably thought of is a race car driver. Which raises the question, is a race car
driver a true athlete? Much of this depends on how you would define the word athlete. According to
The Merriam Webster Dictionary, athlete is defined as a person who is trained to compete in
athletics (Merriam Webster). This leads to the question, what should be considered athletics and
what should not be considered athletics? The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines athletics as
exercises and games requiring physical skill, strength, and endurance ... Show more content on

Drivers must have a very strong neck to hold their helmet up while pulling multiple G forces on
their bodies for hours (Metcalf, Robert). Brute strength is probably not as important as cardio
workouts when it comes to race car drivers. Drivers are not trained as intensely as some other
professional athletes, but they should be in shape if they want to be successful. Endurance is
essential to any race car driver. Almost all athletes have to be able to make their bodies perform
at high levels for long periods of time, and a race car driver is no different. Many argue that all
race car drivers do is sit in a car and drive, and that anyone could do it. Many times in stock cars
the temperature can reach 120 degrees, and drivers will lose a sufficient amount of water from
their bodies due to sweat. On average a driver will lose about five to seven pounds over the
course of a race (Metcalf). At the same time it can be difficult to breathe in a stock car because
there is not much air coming inside of the car because of the aerodynamics. As a result, drivers
have a tube running into their helmet that blows air on them to keep them cool; otherwise, it is
very possible the driver could risk heat stroke during a race. Mark Martin, a fifty year old veteran
NASCAR Sprint Cup driver still strength trains on a regular basis and says You can have the

Fee Simple Research Paper
Fee simple defeasible is another way of saying fee simple qualified. Fee simple qualified is an
estate for which owner has fee simple title subject to a condition. If the condition is not met, then
the title passes back to the owner. It is a conditional estate based on that condition. A condition
subsequent is a condition that must occur after the transaction and a condition precedent is a
condition that must occur prior to the transaction. The classic example is that of a specific use
being required of a property. A man gave his property to the city to use as a library. Years later
the city stopped using the property as a library and the man s heirs demanded the property back.
The man s family regained title because the title held by the city was a fee simpledefeasible
/ qualified title and the condition was that the property be used as a library. Just as a contrast, a fee
simple absolute, is a transfer with no conditions. Synonyms: fee simple qualified Antonyms: fee

The Theory Of Sexual Orientation
Chapter 9 looks at sexuality and how it is perceived around the world. It analyzes how each unique
culture recognizes homosexuality, heterosexuality, and bisexuality as a whole. It uses this
information to formulate facts, opinions, and ideas in regard to all three of these concepts.
This chapter considers gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation. All three of these
definitions have to do with how we classify ourselves, not how society classifies us. Thus, we
should have the freedom to decide what makes us happy, we should not have to conform to
societies beliefs.
There are five different theories of sexual orientation that are examined and discussed in this
chapter. I think it is important to consider each theory and understand why they were created. The
first being the structural functionalist perspective focuses on having safe heterosexual relationships
without cheating to ensure safe child rearing and a regular family dynamic for the child to grow
up in (300). The second being the conflict perspective focuses on the power difference between the
straight individuals and all the members of the LGBT community. The straight individuals are seen
as more powerful because they are the norm meaning that are the dominant group. The LGBT
community is the community with the least amount of power, especially in 1973 when being gay
was considered a mental illness or mental disorder (301). The third being the symbolic interactionist
perspective which focuses

According to Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia, Southwest Airlines is currently the third largest
airline in the world, measured by the number of passengers carried. Total number of passengers that
were carried in the year 2005 amounted to 77.7 million. They are behind American Airlines and
Delta Air Lines. After the tragic September 11th incident, Southwest airlinesremains as one of the
only major airlines that are still profitable. After the September 11th attacks, Southwest Airlines 6

This posed a great threat to Southwest Airlines. Raising money to build such a railway proved
difficult for Texas TGV Corporation. Southwest Airlines created legal barriers that halted the plan

The Importance Of Reading Young Adult Literature
Currently, there is a debate about whether or not adults should be reading young adult (YA)
literature. Some on the side for adults reading young adult literature highlight the benefits of adults
reading YA literature; specifically reading it in order to relate to feelings they had as a young adult.
This ability to relate to YA literature in a personal manner could be very useful to teachers who
work with young adults. Teachers can use their findings from the YA novels to further empathize
with their students, learn how to integrate these YA novels into their curriculum to make it easier
for students to understand, and learn to understand and help students coping with some sort of
emotional trauma that may affect their learning. In the classroom, it is highly important that a
teacher be able to empathize with and relate to their students. A teacher with a good understanding
of the thought processes and emotions of their students often have an easier time relaying
information to them (Sylwester 1994). One way that teachers could learn to relate and empathize
with their students is by reading YA novels. YA novels are written to be understood and related to
by young adults, but anyone who has lived through adolescence should be able to find a YA novel
they can relate their life to. The ability for teachers to read these books and relate to them can in
turn help them reconnect with the thought processes they had in their formative years. Being able
to remember and relate

Gastric Bypass
1. Roux en Y gastric bypass is a special procedure used to treat morbid obesity. Describe in detail
the Roux en Y procedure. The Roux en Y procedure is a laparoscopic form of gastric surgery that
uses trocars to manipulate the stomach. The patient must be positioned supine with their arms
extended outward or in the lithotomy position. This is dependent on where the trocars are
positioned. The surgeon uses monitors to see inside the abdominal cavity and places the trocars a
fist length away from each other. Four 10mm trocars and two 5mm trocars are used for this
surgery. Gastric ligaments are pulled down at the angle of His (Ayloo, 2014). The gastric pouch is
then created by creating a window in the lesser sac (Ayloo, 2014). The stapler is then used to

jejunojejunal anastomosis is completed with the common enterotomy being hand sewn in a bilayer

internal hernias and the Roux limb is brought out anticolic and antigastric (Ayloo, 2014). Next the
gastrojejunal anastomosis located between the pouch and the Roux limb is performed in a double

Life Changing Experience In Life
For many, a life changing moment comes in the form of a tragedy or a hard earned revelation.
Mine came in the form of a five year old girl named Sofia. Sofia spent most of her time in the
oncology ward of the hospital where I volunteered. Her days consisted of sterile hospital rooms,
scans, and chemotherapy. She was losing her hair because of chemo when most girls her age
were learning how to braid theirs. She played with a doll (Mr. Buttons) in her hospital room
instead of playing with other children. Sofia wasn t lonely in the traditional sense. Family,
friends, and even strangers visited the little girl, but could barely interact with her. Most of the
time, she was too tired to play and, when she finally mustered the energy, she found herself
behind a glass panel. The doctors thought it best to keep Sofia isolated, to minimize her chances
of falling ill in her already feeble condition. And, indeed, this is how I interacted with Sofia for a
month. Week after week, hour after hour, I d go to the glass wall to see if she had awoken and
would spend an hour that felt like seconds, playing with her. I suppose that s relativity for you.
Sofia was both the highlight and heartbreak of my week. Comments like, Poor thing and It s just
not fair were heard as often as the incessant beeping of the monitors. Talk is cheap, and pity doesn
t make progress. I had to do something. It is very rare to come across an opportunity to make a
fundamental change in the lives of thousands. I

Essay on The Defence of Provocation
The Defence of Provocation
Provocation is a defence which reduces the offence of murder to manslaughter. Even though there
may be an intent to kill it can be deemed that, in some circumstances, it is not appropriate to be
classified as murder. It is not saying the killing is justified or excused. What it is saying is that the
circumstances, the response (which resulted in the killing) is within the normal range of behaviour
of what can be expected of the ordinary person and that it represents an acknowledgement of human
frailty. This is the traditional view of the law.[1] When the penalty for murderwas death, often
provocation was a way of reducing the punishment from the death penalty to life imprisonment. In
jurisdictions where there ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Berlin Wall And The Cold War Essay
Perhaps the most visual reference to the Cold War was the Berlin Wall. Although this wall only
existed to divide Berlin into two sides, it became a physical representation of the Cold war for
many and its fall in 1989 has been regarded to many as the end of the Cold War.
I have always been interested in the background history behind the Berlin Wall. Since I started
school in the 80s and was in High School while the Cold Warwas winding down, I don t have a
great personal understanding of many of the events leading up to the Cold War, other than from
history classes and watching movies in school about it. I remember watching the movie Night
Crossing in middle school when we were studying about the Berlin Wall.
When I started looking for topics a few weeks ago I wanted to learn more about the Berlin Wall. I
have since realized that to study the history of the Berlin Wall in one semester is something that
would only allow me to skim through various sources and information, there is simply too much
information to learn and so much of it available that I have chosen to focus my research so far on
the Fall of the Berlin wall. The events of the mid to late 80s that changed the political atmosphere
enough to bring the wall down.
There are numerous Primary Sources available for this study, some I have looked at already are
the 1987 Reagan speech at the Brandenburg gate in Berlin, from which the famous Mr. Gorbachev,
tear down this wall! quote was heard. I have also

  • 2. The House Of Bernarda Alba Themes Freedom and Repression: How opposing themes go hand in hand In the play by Federico Garcia Lorca, The House of Bernarda Alba, a recurring theme throughout the play is freedom. Lorca expresses freedom using characters, situations and objects. The characters in the story are Bernarda s daughters who are under her control and have extremely little freedom and privacy by being forced to abide by her rules. Freedom and Repression are most significant themes conveyed throughout the play, the two opposing themes together are important to understanding both the characters and the story as well. In the beginning of the play the girls are put into an eight year mourning period by Bernarda because of the death of their father. She... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Martirio once had a man interested in her but that opportunity was snatched away from her by Bernarda. On page 191 Poncia says, Martirio is lovesick, I don t care what you say. Why didn t you let her marry enrique Humanas? Why, on the very day he was coming to her window did you send him a message not to come? And Bernarda responded, ... My blood won t mingle with the Humanas while I live! This is an example of how different Martirio s circumstances were from Adela and Angustias. Martirio was repressed from her desire for freedom from her mother and became jealous when her sister s were not denied in the same way. These two themes lead the characters to believe that escaping one prison will make them free, only to be confined to another. This is the situation the women in the play recognize as a inner conflict. An example of this is on page 169 when Amelia says, These days a girl doesn t know whether to have a beau or not. Additionally, On page 208 Adela says, I can t stand this horrible house after the taste of his mouth. I ll be what he wants me to be. This quote shows how the girls view men as an escape from their sheltered home. Men represent freedom as well as repression. For Example, On page 169 it says ... Her sweetheart doesn t let her go out even to the front doorstep. This shows us that Bernarda s daughters realize if they stay at home forever, they will be controlled by their mother, ... • 3. Enemy Release Research Paper Enemy release is perhaps one of the most elementary forms of reasoning behind why a species has the potential to become invasive in an introduced environment. The enemy release hypothesis predicts that an exotic species can become invasive upon it introduction as a result of its escape or release of specialist herbivores. It also predicts that phenotypic plasticity will be displayed similarly in native and invasive ecotypes and that both ecotypes will behave and respond alike in common environments (Rogers and Siemann, 2005). This prediction is derived from the understanding that both native and invasive ecotypes have similar genetic contribution to tissue type and quality (Rogers and Siemann, 2005). Assuming that specialist herbivores are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In part, this is explained by the novel weapons hypothesis which predicts that invasive plant species produce chemicals that are novel to generalists of introduced ranges, requiring adaptive evolution for invasives to become palatable to generalists (Lankau et al., 2004). It is also generally accepted that invasives tend to alter the soil composition of their introduced ranges (Zou et al., 2006). In some instances, it is evident that generalists do not feed on invasives in introduced ranges because they lack the behavioral adaptations necessary to do so (Lankau et al., 2004). In 2002, a greenhouse study was performed in LaMarque, Texas where grasshoppers (M. augustipennis) were placed large mesocosms with Triadica and Celtis (common hackberry) to determine possible behavioral shifts of herbivores when confined to a single food source (Lankau et al., 2004). In fact, grasshoppers exhibited more herbivory on the exotic Triadica genotypes when compared to relative consumption of native Celtis genotypes (Lankau et al., 2004). This study suggests that Triadica sebifera is indeed palatable to generalist herbivores like grasshoppers in its introduced ranges. Generalists, however, require selective pressure in order to shift their diets to invasive species like Triadica sebifera (Lankau et al., 2004). Generalist herbivores display no detrimental effects ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Clash Of Kings Symbolism A Clash of Kings Was there ever a war where only one side bled? (118) This perspicuous question was raised by George R.R. Martin, an epic fantasy writer and author of the New York Times bestselling novel, A Clash of Kings. I chose this novel because I appreciate merciless world building novels such as Beowulf or Lord of the Rings. Moreover, this novel is the second of the legendary book series known as A Song of Ice and Fire. This story takes place in a medieval setting with potential for an endless amount of possibilities. The novel predominately focuses on a variety of families that all share the common goal of sitting on the Iron Throne. The story is presented from nine separate points of view, eight of them coming from characters with a royal background. Each character has a remarkable in depth backstory and a unique reason for their placement in the War of the Five Kings. The majority of the story occurs in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, where the Lannisters and the Iron Throne are located. The other portions of the novel take place in Winterfell with House Stark, Castle Black with Jon Snow, and Essos with Daenerys Targaryen. The novel picks up immediately where its predecessor, A Game of Thrones, concluded with King Robert Baratheon s death and the Lord of Winterfell, Eddard Stark s, execution. Accompanied by King Baratheon and his Hand s death, the position of King was unsecure. Subsequently, rulers of different origins rise up in an attempt to conquer the Seven ... The U.S. Congress created this law as a form of immigration relief that is available aliens who are victims. • 7. Analysis Of A Simple Heart Taneka .D.G. Evelyn ENG 212 042 Dec.12th, 2011 The realist period was a time of the nineteenth century in which authors, artists and other people in literature provided in depth accounts of events that occurred during that time period. In Gustave Flaubert s A Simple Heart, he explored the lives of two fictional women of different classes (middle and lower) during the realist period. Through characters like Madame Aubain, a rich woman and Felicite, her poor, gentle maid, he provided the reader with a sneak peek of nineteenth century France. The first sentence of A Simple Heart gives the reader an ironic insight of the protagonist Felicite. It states Madame Aubain s servant Felicite was the envy of the ladies of Pont l Г‰vГ«que for half a century (2208, A Simple Heart).By giving a brief synopsis of the protagonist, it makes the reader wonder why was she the envy of the other women around her. She was serving another woman. What was there to envy? Flaubert must have done this on purpose to get the reader to put a price on happiness. Even the words used to describe the other women ladies would bring a great deal of doubt to the reader. Flaubert introduced the seemingly simpler character, Felicite first, with a rather vivid and detailed description. He portrayed her as a woman that was different from the others. Being a maid, Felicite was not expected to be complex and Flaubert did her much justice. He described She rose at daybreak to be in time for Mass, and worked till evening without stopping. Then, when dinner was over, the plates and dishes were in order, and the door shut fast, she thrust the Evelyn 2 log under the ashes and went to sleep in front of the heath with a rosary in her hand (2209, A Simple Heart). He made her seem very uniformed, as though she had nothing important to do. She appeared religious and organized but lacked that complexity that comes with being a woman. The routine was the same and therefore proved that a woman of lower class was bounded to the house. Felicite became so accustomed to her routine that she decided to stay in the house to the very end. According to www.docshare.com, She grew old and more useless as a direct parallel to what was happening to the house

In my essay, I will be referring to two book. Why? By Peter Hayes and What We Knew, by Eric A Johnson and Karl Heinz Reuband. First I will be discussing the emancipation of the Jews. Peter Hayes mentions how the emancipation was part of the French import (Hayes,39). Of course, many Germans were not happy about this. For example, Johann Gottlieb Fichte. On page thirty nine, it states Now he flatly argued that making Jews free German citizens would hurt the German nation and identified antisemitism with German patriotism (Hayes, 39). This already sets the standard for having Germans think that anti Semitism is being proud of your country. In 1819, riots came into play. They were violent and took place in Wurzburg and Frankfurt. The ones who started the riots were craftsmen and merchants who were angry of the potential competitions against the Jews if they were allowed to be citizens. There was still... My first RTA experiences started when I was a young boy, with my parents of course, but this past summer I rode alone on my way to Saint Ignatius High School for a summer camp. I learned how to navigate the cityof Clevelandand how to use the convenient public transportation that Cleveland offers. I ve had many experiences on the RTA and even ridden public transportation in other countries, and I think the biased opinion that public transportation is unsafe is an unfair description even after this most recent experience. For some reason people worry about those intimidating figures on public transportation when they re just as large of a threat anywhere else. There are aggressive citizens everywhere, but there are also citizens who are willing to assist. Unfortunately, sometimes people only see and remember those few intrusive ones when they are downtown or in an urban setting and then form false opinions about an entire group of people. Growing up in America, Maxine Hong Kingston does not know what kind of Chinese girl to be. She is conditioned to expect to be a wife or a slave, but she dreams of the warrior she knows she could be. • 16. Genetic Disease And Its Effects On The Body Introduction Genetic diseases are being discovered more often as we learn the affects that genes have on the body. McArdle s disease is a metabolic disease that affects skeletal muscle because of a gene mutation. The genetic mutation prevents the creation of the enzyme myophosphorylase. This enzyme is responsible for the breakdown of glycogen in muscles (Haldeman Englert, 2014). McArdle s disease is also known as Type V Glycogen Storage Disorder. It affects approximately one out of every 100,000 people ( McArdlesDisease.org, n.d.). Glycogen is broken down into glucose, which is used to produce adenosine triphosphatefor muscleenergy. Patients can live relatively normal lives with this disease once proper care and education has been provided (Kitaoka, 2014). Genetic Nature McArdle s disease is seen as muscle dysfunction caused by a mutation in the gene that codes for the enzyme myophosphorylase. The myophosphorylase gene, PYGM, is located at chromosome 11q13 (Kitaoka, 2014). There have been over 100 mutations of the gene detected. In North American Caucasians, the mutation commonly found is the p.R50X (Kitaoka, 2014). In Japanese patients, it is found to be the p.F709del/F710de mutation (Kitaoka, 2014). Researchers have seen a correlation between ethnicity and the type of mutation of that they carry. All the mutations cause a lack of the myophosphorylase enzyme in the muscle tissue. It is found to be an autosomal recessive inheritance trait. Those who are heterozygotes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Creationists believe it was an intelligent designer, namely, God; evolutionists believe it was a driving force of nature, namely, natural selection. Natural selection works when life forms with advantageous survival traits live long enough to breed, therefore passing on those traits to the next generation. Life forms with weaker traits die before breeding, and therefore disappear from the gene pool. Genetic diversity results in slight variations of these hereditary traits from generation to generation, which allows a species to adapt to the changing demands of a changing environment. This results in a suitability ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The problem is one of choosing the correct analogy. He pointed out that the universe more resembles a living organism than a mechanical watch which indicates that the universe must have started as a fetus in a cosmic womb! Other scholars also lampooned Paley s argument; Voltaire argued that noses must have been designed to hold up glasses, and that bunny rabbits must have been given white tails so they could be easier to shoot. The idea of design was so thoroughly and effectively ridiculed that theologians of the time actually stopped using it as an argument, although, curiously enough, it would resurface in the 20th century. Darwin essentially agreed that life had been designed, although not necessarily by the designer that Paley evoked. Darwin s advance on the argument was that the designer did not have to be an intelligent being, but could also be a driving force of nature. Consider the example of horse breeding. A rancher can select any trait among his horses that he would like to emphasize for example, small size. By breeding his smallest horses together, he will eventually obtain a line of miniature horses. Evolutionists cite this as proof that species can change as a result of selective breeding. Creationists respond quite rightly that the process needs a designer, in this case the rancher. But evolutionists point out that the same process happens in nature. Exploring The Benefits And Difficulties Of Travel Accounts To understand the benefits and difficulties of travel accounts as primary sources, they need to be clearly defined and placed into their context. The main primary sources in I will be studying are British travel accounts produced between 1790 and 1800. Tim Young provides the basics for travel accounts stating, The guiding principle of this book is that travel writing consists of predominantly factual, first person prose of travels that have been undertaken by the author narrator. It includes discussion of works that some may regard as genre in their own rights... but it distinguishes these from other types of narrative in which travel ins narrated by a third party or is imagined. Young s description of travel narratives allows for accounts that were viewed as accurate in their time such as Jonathan Swift s Gulliver s Travels. Young and Elizabeth Bohls demonstrate the ability for travel narratives to be a combination of several literature genres, and the focus is on the aspects of the traveler rather than the construction of the work in a literary sense. Linda Colley described the process of analysis the documents, But it needs stressing from the start that, while these texts sometimes contain fictional interludes, together of course with a tithe of lies and errors, their overall factual anchorage can usually be tested. • 20. Recurring Scaffold In The Scarlet Letter The Recurring Scaffold Through day and night, the scaffold is a place of punishment, awaiting its next victim. People pass by wondering who the next victim is going to be. This public punishment causes many to change and work to preserve their reputation. Despite this, the scaffold turns into a constant place of punishment, in The Scarlet Letterby Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hester s love for Dimmesdale and Dimmesdale s cowardicehold significant meanings in the novel, which lead up to Dimmesdale gaining a more mature mindset. Specifically, Hester s punishment portrays her love for Dimmesdale in the first scaffold scene. Hester refuses to reveal the name of the father in spite of everyone asking her. Dimmesdale tells Hester to reveal the name by saying, Be not silent from any mistaken pity and tenderness for him; for, believe me, Hester, though he were to step down from a high place, and stand there beside thee, on thy pedestal of shame, yet better were it so, than to hide a guilty heart through life, (63) to explain that it is better for Hester to reveal the name of the father than to keep it to herself. By telling her not to remain silent due to any pity and tenderness for him , and telling her to allow him to step down from a high place and stand there beside her, it shows that Dimmesdale wants her to... • 21. Benefits Of The Individual Environment And The Team... The idea to succeed can only go so far, it is the paths chosen that can make the end result a success, or a failure. We all want to succeed, but as a leader you have to determine what approach to make. Shall I take on this idea alone, or should I create a group to assist me, whatever it takes to succeed, right? Some ideas can be accomplished by an individualalone, but usually bigger ideas need a team to see it through. Working in a team environment can have its drawbacks, but it also has many benefits. In this paper I am going to provide research to support the setbacks and benefits of both the individual environment and the team environment. I found that what an individual may lack is a team s gain, vice versa. The important result is the success achieved by either a team, or an individual. In the International Journal of Psychology, the authors described a team as being collectivism. In the journal article Presence of Others and Task Performance in Japan and the United States: A Laboratory Investigation, the research was not only testing the effects of the different cultures on job productivity and job quality, but they were also focusing on the effects of working in a group versus working individually. In their words, they were comparing collectivism and individualism. According to the journal article collectivism is defined as follows: ...greater emphasis on (a) the views, needs, and goals of the ingroup rather than oneself; (b) social norms and duty defined by the ... Originally we used HDL labatory however due to some recent bad press we no longer felt this lab was a reliable option. We had to re assure both the patients and the client that they would recieve the same quality of testing that they were use to with previous lab draws. As part of choosing a labatory, I reseached labs that offered similar advanced lab testing. I then sent the top three labs a proposal along with a list of questions. To test the overall response to the change in the lab, I had the first labs drawn at a board retreat where only 20 members were impacted instead of the 1200 enrollees. This allowed me to gather facts on a smaller spectrum and to make corrections before we have all of the participants present for the lab draws. Some of the information received from this test group was not positive but it was easily corrected. Poe was a mysterious man that combined all his traits into one story. All of Poe s stories had some sort of darkness to them, some used a little bit of love and romance, but all lead to the same result usually. In Poe s story The Pit and the Pendulum, it expresses torture and despair, almost to the point of where all hope is gone. In this story, an unnamed narrator is taken for prisoner and is placed in a dark and deep dungeon in Spain. The narrator wakes up in the dungeon thinking it is a tomb and starts to feeling around the dungeon not knowing where he is at. • 27. Greek Beliefs In Ancient Greek Mythology Greek mythology is one of the most interesting topics to come out of ancient Greek culture. The idea of sincerely believing that every move or choice that is made all goes back to the gods and goddesses fascinates me. In ancient Greece, the normal thing was to believe in multiple higher powers instead of today were majority dictates that there is only one higher power. I was aware of some facts about the Greek s belief in the god and goddesses from previous history classes but I have never at the freedom to choose to write a paper solely on them. The goal of my research was to find out what made the gods and goddesses so special to the Greeks and why a civilization would worship them for centuries. The start of believing in the gods and goddesses started as a way to explain daily life and to give life a purpose . Without a reason for living majority of people would descend into madness with no morals. Unlike other religions that had a holy text, mythology was based primarily on word of mouth. The stories were passed down from generation to generation to create the outlandish but captivating mythology that we have in modern society. While there were countless gods and goddesses, students do typically learn the 12 that are called the Olympian Gods . This group was led by Zeus, who is perhaps is the most well known Greek god. The next 11 were named as followed, Athena, Apollo, Poseidon, Hermes, Hera, Aphrodite, Demeter, Ares, Artemis, Hades, Hephaistos, and Dionysus. I have attached a family tree to help showcases how majority of the gods and goddesses were related . Each god had their own followers and were all considered the god of something. For example, Athena is known as the Goddess of Wisdom and Hades is the God of the Dead or God of the Underworld. Greek citizens built large temples to honor a particular god where the god was thought to live. Within these temples, religious ceremonies were not held as we hold mass in a church. Instead, the temple for each god and goddess were considered the living place of whoever it was built in honor to. The most notable would the be the temple to Athena which is showcased in the photo to the left . In each temple, a statue of the god was placed for worshipers to live ... Religion was then tied into government, making it all the more significant because pharaohs were viewed as god like and were considered to be ultimate rulers. Citizens then realized that much more is at stake for an act of wrongdoing. However, in Mesopotamian culture, death was simply foreseen as an eternal sleep and was the given the name Land of No Return that held no importance and did not have any affect when involved with government. All in all, geography affected the natural occurrences to the civilizations as well as the frequency of invasion, the evolvement of strong cultural beliefs, and self sufficiency. Egypt was claimed to be a theocracy, so the behavior of residents was caused by the pharaoh who was the source of all law throughout the region and was classified to be a god. This idea ties in adequately with the idea of Egypt being a centralized type of government. Teo and Loosemore (2001) maintain: Levels of waste within the construction industry need to be reduced for environmental and economic reasons. Changing people s wasteful behaviour can make a significant contribution (pp.741). This paper defines the CDW issue, significant stakeholders, relevant ethical theories and costs. CDW has increased as construction volumes have risen generally, and following natural disasters. For example, the Canterbury Earthquakes generated a major increase in CDW. Major damage to buildings, rock falls and landslips, liquefaction and major infrastructure damage has left an estimated $7.1 billion [Earthquake Commission] EQC bill, says Mackenzie (2011 pp.33). The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA, n.d.) estimated 8 million tonnes of CDW. CERA (n.d.) points to the construction industry and local authorities working together to find and quickly implement new solutions for recycling or reusing waste. This paper will be discussing an article written by Frederick Douglass entitled Reconstruction. In this article Douglass discusses the Congressional session taking place in 1866. He calls upon the Congressmen to undo the blunders of the previous... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At this point in history the nation must face a massive reworking of government and redefining of society. It was to this grand work of national regeneration and entire purification Congress must #8230; address Itself, with full purpose . During this period President Johnson continued his pardons and the 10% plan continued to readmit states to the union. Louisiana, Tennessee, and Virginia were a few of the 10% states readmitted. In opposition to Johnson s readmission policies and his Reconstruction plan, Radicals began to refuse to allow Democrats to sit in Congress. Congress also passes the Tenure of Office Act inhibiting the power of the President. Congress had to overcome the obstacles previously faced in order to see its goals fulfilled. The previous session left some large holes in the policies established. President Johnson had previously inhibited the acts of Congress and the Congressmen were reluctant to make such bold moves against him. One of the ultimate goals of Radical Reconstruction was to achieve equality for all citizens, and to give a just definition of citizen as well. A first step toward this was the 14th Amendment. The 14th Amendment became law in June of 1866. This new law declared any person born in the Unites States a citizen, with rights undeniable by any state. Al Shabaab Research Paper Armed with a militia of young Islamic zealots, a fully fledged intelligence service, and a government that is complete with propaganda and taxation departments, the terrorist cell of Al Shabaab poses a legitimate and durable threat to Somalia. With its sophisticated level of organization and management, Al Shabaab has been able to absorb setbacks and still persist; they astutely navigated the Somalian Civil War and emerged strong enough to capture vast swaths of territory. Consequently, even though they have ceded some territory since then, Al Shabaab now enjoys a deeply entrenched position of influence in Somalia and Mogadishu. In the first week of July, a roadside bomb near Mogadishu exploded on a minibus, killing two persons and injuring six others. The next day, a grenade was tossed into a crowd of men and women who were cleaning a market in Mogadishu, killing two individuals. • 41. The Theme of Violence in Cage Bird, Giving Blood, Sand... This semester in American Literature I have read and analyzed various literary works. The reoccurring theme throughout the works is violence. I have came to the conclusion that the significance of violence throughout the various works is that the group or individual singled out throughout the works is the victim of violence because the enemy has something to gain from the victim. The literary works, Caged Bird, Giving Blood, Sand Creek, and An Episode of War demonstrate this. For example, Caged Bird by Maya Angelou demonstrates how a personal struggle can become a form of violence. Angelou, an African American has a troubled childhood and as a result of her parents divorce she is sent to live with her grandmother at a young age. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Historically there have been racial tensions between white s and Native Americans. This resulted in massacres of Native American s. The violence reflected in this short story is the denial of the blood donation of the man and the massacre of the Native Americans by white s. The massacre was a gain for white s because it eliminated the Native American s who were seen as a threat to the white s way of life. Another example of discrimination resulting in violence is reflected in the poem Sand Creek, by Simon Ortiz. The poem is told from the point of view of an Indian who reflects on the brutality of Indian deaths by the Anglos. The poem is a historical reference to the Sand Creek massacre, which occurred in 1864 when a US military militia massacred a group of Indians who presented themselves as friendly near a fort. At the conclusion of the poem the author emphasizes that things will improve stating that, There are flowers, and new grass, and a spring wind rising from Sand Creek (2). The author also states that things will change for the people of Indian decent. The violence throughout the poem is the Anglos massacring the Indians just because they could. In this scene, the characters follow part of the story of Abraham and Isaac. In the show, Negan fulfills the role of God (which he would, undoubtedly, appreciate), Rick is Abraham, and Carl is Isaac. Negan demands a personal sacrifice of Rick that will protect other people, but cause profound damage to his son and himself. Negan demands fulfillment up until Rick has resigned himself to cutting of Carl s arm. Negan does not need Rick to actually complete the act, he just needs Rick to accept his domination. It functions not only as a test of Rick s sense of duty to his people and the power of his fear, but also makes Rick grateful to Negan. In a very twisted way, Negan saves Carl by sparing him from the fate Negan had demanded of him. It is a little different than the original story, Negan comes out of the situation with Rick s obedience, fear, and maybe some reverence. Maybe it s not so different after all.... Almost all athletes have to be able to make their bodies perform at high levels for long periods of time, and a race car driver is no different. Many argue that all race car drivers do is sit in a car and drive, and that anyone could do it. Many times in stock cars the temperature can reach 120 degrees, and drivers will lose a sufficient amount of water from their bodies due to sweat. On average a driver will lose about five to seven pounds over the course of a race (Metcalf). At the same time it can be difficult to breathe in a stock car because there is not much air coming inside of the car because of the aerodynamics. If the condition is not met, then the title passes back to the owner. It is a conditional estate based on that condition. A condition subsequent is a condition that must occur after the transaction and a condition precedent is a condition that must occur prior to the transaction. The classic example is that of a specific use being required of a property. A man gave his property to the city to use as a library. Years later the city stopped using the property as a library and the man s heirs demanded the property back. The man s family regained title because the title held by the city was a fee simpledefeasible / qualified title and the condition was that the property be used as a library. • 47. The Theory Of Sexual Orientation Chapter 9 looks at sexuality and how it is perceived around the world. It analyzes how each unique culture recognizes homosexuality, heterosexuality, and bisexuality as a whole. It uses this information to formulate facts, opinions, and ideas in regard to all three of these concepts. This chapter considers gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation. All three of these definitions have to do with how we classify ourselves, not how society classifies us. Thus, we should have the freedom to decide what makes us happy, we should not have to conform to societies beliefs. There are five different theories of sexual orientation that are examined and discussed in this chapter. I think it is important to consider each theory and understand why they were created. The first being the structural functionalist perspective focuses on having safe heterosexual relationships without cheating to ensure safe child rearing and a regular family dynamic for the child to grow up in (300). The second being the conflict perspective focuses on the power difference between the straight individuals and all the members of the LGBT community. The straight individuals are seen as more powerful because they are the norm meaning that are the dominant group. The LGBT community is the community with the least amount of power, especially in 1973 when being gay was considered a mental illness or mental disorder (301). • 49. The Importance Of Reading Young Adult Literature Currently, there is a debate about whether or not adults should be reading young adult (YA) literature. Some on the side for adults reading young adult literature highlight the benefits of adults reading YA literature; specifically reading it in order to relate to feelings they had as a young adult. This ability to relate to YA literature in a personal manner could be very useful to teachers who work with young adults. Teachers can use their findings from the YA novels to further empathize with their students, learn how to integrate these YA novels into their curriculum to make it easier for students to understand, and learn to understand and help students coping with some sort of emotional trauma that may affect their learning. In the classroom, it is highly important that a teacher be able to empathize with and relate to their students. A teacher with a good understanding of the thought processes and emotions of their students often have an easier time relaying information to them (Sylwester 1994). One way that teachers could learn to relate and empathize with their students is by reading YA novels. YA novels are written to be understood and related to by young adults, but anyone who has lived through adolescence should be able to find a YA novel they can relate their life to. • 52. Life Changing Experience In Life For many, a life changing moment comes in the form of a tragedy or a hard earned revelation. Mine came in the form of a five year old girl named Sofia. Sofia spent most of her time in the oncology ward of the hospital where I volunteered. Her days consisted of sterile hospital rooms, scans, and chemotherapy. She was losing her hair because of chemo when most girls her age were learning how to braid theirs. She played with a doll (Mr. Buttons) in her hospital room instead of playing with other children. Sofia wasn t lonely in the traditional sense. Family, friends, and even strangers visited the little girl, but could barely interact with her. Most of the time, she was too tired to play and, when she finally mustered the energy, she found herself behind a glass panel. Week after week, hour after hour, I d go to the glass wall to see if she had awoken and would spend an hour that felt like seconds, playing with her. I suppose that s relativity for you. What it is saying is that the circumstances, the response (which resulted in the killing) is within the normal range of behaviour of what can be expected of the ordinary person and that it represents an acknowledgement of human frailty.
