Aliim is an international non-profit organization that leverages technology to provide marginalized youth and refugees access to education. Aliim believes that mobile learning programmes can both expand the reach of education and improve the impacts of learning among vulnerable youth living in conflict-affected countries by addressing their unique learning needs.
Aliim has developed a framework as part of its Smartphone Schools programme that addresses the specific issues faced by Syrian refugee girls and other vulnerable youth. Many face barriers to education such as insufficient space in schools, bullying and language barriers that prevent them from consistently attending school in their host country. The framework outlines ways to contextualize an active learning pedagogy, psychosocial support, mentorship, certification and community buy-in for refugee girls affected by conflict in the Middle East. Aliim’s next challenge is to expand the framework to help girls affected by war and violence around the world.
In the spirit of collaboration, Aliim hopes that this framework can help organizations design inclusive mobile learning programmes that empower girls to realize their right to education, despite living in conflict.

Organizational Profile
The education site for this study was James Monroe High School in West Virginia. Its mission is to educate its student population with a rigorous, multifaceted curriculum that empowers students to express personal histories, build meaningful connections to the outside world, and become lifelong learners. Its vision is to motivate every student to achieve academic and personal success through a dynamic academic program, personalized relationships, and meaningful connections to the outside world. The school is in Monroe County and serves students from various backgrounds (white, black, low-income). It has 524 students from the 9th to 12th grade, ranking it the 76th in West Virginia and 10416th nationally (James Monroe high school, n.d).
Introduction to the problem
The problem at the school was that 28% of the low-income and underserved students were ready for college compared to an 84% overall college readiness rate (Vogel & Heidrich, 2020). Differentiation Case Study
Mountain Meadows is a public high school in a lower-middle class neighborhood. The school population is 50% African American, 20% Hispanic, 25% Caucasian, 2% Asian, and 3% Native American. About half of the parents graduated from high school.
Chen is a first generation Chinese American male in your high school STEM class. He is likable and socially accepted by his peers. He likes being a part of the brainstorming for group projects, but generally avoids most of the work on the actual project. His group members do not seem to mind because he gives them a great deal of insightful, helpful feedback and keeps the general mood of the group lighthearted with excellent comedic relief and good natured positivity. When he has to do his own work, he avoids the challenging work when there is a final letter grade or final score associated with it. His formative assessments show above grade-level mastery of the concepts. You are perplexed by his choices when he clearly knows the material. Not completing assignments has resulted in Chen receiving Cs and Ds. His parents are concerned that he is not living up to his potential. Frankly you are too.
You investigate intrinsic and extrinsic motivations and implement some motivational strategies to get Chen to produce. They do not work. You meet with him and, together, you make an independent learning contract, but he is not able to uphold his end. You talk with him about having low self-esteem, and you administer an affective assessment. He does not have low self-esteem. During your research, you come across a term you have never heard before - underachieving perfectionist, also referred to as gifted underachiever. Underachieving perfectionists may not be identified as gifted and talented.
After learning more about this unusual topic, you meet with Chen and his parents to discuss the characteristics of underachieving perfectionists. From this meeting, you learned that he loves learning, but hates being judged; he does not see the point in doing the final project or the test after getting high scores on the formative assessments; he’s comfortable being a part of the group, but fears being labeled “The Boss.” He is uncomfortable trying to live up to the standards of his parents and the stereotype of high-achieving Asian students, and he does not want others to see him struggle when working on something. He likes helping others with their projects and making friends by being nice instead of being mean during projects. He feels that by helping with projects, he is learning in the process.

This project work focuses on the effects of child abuse on students’ academic performance. The study attempts to unravel the causes, effects and remedies to child abuse among secondary school students. It was carried out in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State. A sample of 100 was randomly drawn from selected secondary schools in the local government and questionnaires were administered to the respondents. The mean percentage test, which was adopted in the study’s analysis, indicated that excessive battering of a child by parents/teacher/guidance; broken homes, child hawking before and after school and an unconducive learning environment are all causes of child abuse. Also, it was found that child abuse negatively affects a child’s school performance; such abused children are vulnerable to early pregnancy. Ill-treatment as well causes permanent and lifelong trauma, thereby making children develop low cognition of school subjects. The preaching of good morals by religious leaders to parents and guardians is part of the recommendations made in this study. Also, melting out punishment in form of fines on erring parents/guidance especially those forcing their children to hawk, and prevention from bad peer influence will help eliminate or reduce to the barest minimum the incidence of child abuse among secondary school students.

Nikhil Goyal is a successful high school student who, like many students his age, hates school. But unlike most students his age, Nikhil wrote a speech about it and delivered it to a global audience via a TEDX Youth (2012) presentation (please click here for a written transcript of the video). The central theme of the presentation is relevance and, specifically, how schools often lack relevance to the lives of their learners. The majority of Nikhil’s story focuses on Nick Perez, a boy who was marginalized in school and medicated to be able to adhere to the parameters of thought and behavior expected for participation in the school. As you view the presentation, you will learn how Nick became disillusioned by the lack of relevancy and interest in his studies and how his disenfranchisement eventually led him to drop out of school.
In this assignment, you will reflect on the story of Nick Perez and analyze it based on what might have happened differently if Nick’s education targeted the learning of 21st century skills through culturally relevant learning opportunities. Additionally, you will recommend a culturally relevant learning experience that might have been able to meet Nick’s needs in high school. Review the Instructor Guidance for this week for additional information and use the Ladson-Billing (1995) resource and Chapter 4 of Wardle (2013) to define a culturally relevant learning experience; apply this framework to the creation of solutions.
