INTRODUCTION TO ERGONOMICS
• WORKPLACE ERGONOMICS IS SCIENCE OF DESIGNING , KEEPING IN MIND THE
CAPABILITIES AND LIMITATIONS OF WORKERS.
• POOR WORKSITE DESIGN LEADS TO FATIGUE AND FRUSTRATION.
• GOAL OF OFFICE ERGONOMICS IS TO DESIGN YOUR OFFICE WORKSTATION
WHICH ALLOWS YOU COMFORTABLE WORKING ENVIRONMENT FOR MAX
PRODUCTIVITY AND EFFICIENCY
ERGONOMICALLY DESIGNED CHAIR
AN ERGONOMIC CHAIR IS A CHAIR DESIGNED TO SUIT A
RANGE OF PEOPLE. IT HAS ADJUSTABLE PARTS THAT
ENHANCE MAXIMUM COMFORT DURING SITTING.
IT AIMS IN GIVING THE CORRECT SUPPORT OF YOUR
POSTURE, WEIGHT AND LUMBER WHILE SITTING.
ERGONOMIC CHAIR FEATURES
• SEAT HEIGHT
• SEAT WIDTH AND DEPTH
• SEAT TILT
• BACKREST LUMBER SUPPORT
• BACKREST RECLINE
• SWIVEL
• ARMRESTS
• HEADREST
Area of office room;
factors which the area of office and workstation should
consider are:
NATURE OF WORK:
If the the most work is site visits, meetings
and consultations then small area is satisfactory.
But if all the work is on workstation then the small area is not
sufficient.
CULTURAL ASPECTS:
It totally depends on culture like people
from Canada needs personal space but the people from other
cultures needs smaller space.
Area of office room;
ANTHROPOMETRY:
It means body dimensions. It
depends on size and shape of employees to accommodate
them.
INDIVIDUAL PERCEPTION:
The amount of space available is
a psychological meaning.
DESIGN THE OFFICE TABLE:
THE OFFICE TABLE PLAY AN VITAL ROLE IN
MAINTAINENCE OF YOUR POSTURE.
1: IDEAL HEIGHT ...IT DEPEND UPON HEIGHT .
STANDARD SITTING HEIGHT OF WORK SURFACE IS
“28 TO 30”
MEASUREMENT:
MEASURE THE HEIGHT OF A PERSON FROM KNEE TO BIG
TOE FOR DESIGNING THE SURFACE AREA IN SITTING
POSITION .
AND HEIGHT OF TABLE SHOULD BE 2 TO 3 CM ABOVE TO
YOUR KNEE IN SITTING POSITION
CLEARANCE:
IT PREFERS TO WORK BETTER WITHOUT ANY
HURDLE .
COMPUTER USER
ERGONOMICS
 CABINET ON EITHER BOTH OR ONE SIDE ...
 SET THE FILES ON DIFFERENT SIDES
 SET THE COMPUTER IN FRONT OF YOU
 PLACES KEYBOARD AND MOUSE CLOSER TO YOU
 PLACE THE WORKING THINGS ACCORDING TO YOUR REACH.
Office Ergonomics: A -five Checklist to
Correctly Position your Computer moniter
STEPS TO FOLLOW:
Place THE MONITOR in a location that eliminates glare on the Screen.
Place the monitor at aright angle or away from the windows and task
lights.
Place the top line of the screen at or slightly ( 0-30 degrees) below eye
level.
Place the monitor at least an arm’s length away from you.
Place the monitor so you can clearly read the screen without bending your
head, neck or trunk forward or backward.
ADVANTAGES OF ERGONOMIC
SEATING:
• 1-SUPPORTING YOUR POSTURE:
INCLUDES THE HEAD REST AND BACK REST
ADJUSTABLE HEIGHT TO SIT WITH FEET FLAT ON FLOOR
KNEES AT 90 DEGREE TO THE FLOOR AND PARALLEL TO HIPS
2-COMFORTABILITY:
IT IS USER FRIENDLY
REPLACES SITTING FATIGUE INTO SITTING COMFORT
3-REDUCING NECK PROBLEMS:
ERGONOMIC CHAIR HAS A HEAD AND NECK REST
REDUCES STIFFNESS IN THE NECK AND SHOULDER REGION
REDUCES COMPLICATIONS LIKE CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS
• 3-REDUCING NECK PROBLEMS:
ERGONOMIC CHAIR HAS A HEAD AND NECK REST
REDUCES STIFFNESS IN THE NECK AND SHOULDER REGION
REDUCES COMPLICATIONS LIKE CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS
4-MAKES WORK EASY:
ADJUSTABLE TO ACCOMMODATE DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES YOU MAY PERFORM
ALLOWS USER TO MOVE AROUND SWIFTLY WITHOUT THE NEED TO EXTEND AND STRAIN
5-INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY:
INCREDIBLY HELP IN IMPROVING PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK
MAKES THE WORKSTATION ALL MORE EFFICIENT
MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDERS:
•CARPEL TUNNEL SYNDROME
• CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME IS A COMMON
CONDITION THAT CAUSES PAIN, NUMBNESS, AND
TINGLING IN THE HAND AND ARM.
• THE CONDITION OCCURS WHEN ONE OF THE
MAJOR NERVES TO THE HAND — THE MEDIAN
NERVE — IS SQUEEZED OR COMPRESSED AS IT
TRAVELS THROUGH THE WRIST.
CONTINUE…..
• IF PRESSURE ON THE MEDIAN NERVE CONTINUES,
HOWEVER, IT CAN LEAD TO NERVE DAMAGE AND
WORSENING SYMPTOMS. TO PREVENT PERMANENT
DAMAGE, SURGERY TO TAKE PRESSURE OFF THE MEDIAN
NERVE MAY BE RECOMMENDED FOR SOME PATIENTS.
Ligament sprain
• Sprain occurs when you overextend or tear a ligament
while severely stressing a joint. Sprains often occur in the
following circumstances:
• Ankle — Walking or exercising on an uneven surface,
landing awkwardly from a jump
CONTINUE………
• KNEE — PIVOTING DURING AN ATHLETIC ACTIVITY
• WRIST — LANDING ON AN OUTSTRETCHED HAND
DURING A FALL
• THUMB — SKIING INJURY OR OVEREXTENSION WHEN
PLAYING RACQUET SPORTS, SUCH AS TENNIS
