This document discusses fire protection methods and equipment for occupational safety and health. 2. FIRE PROTECTION METHOD
• Provide adequate fire appliances, & other facilities to
assist fire & rescue personnel
• Provide adequate fixed installation, where
appropriate, for quick & effective detection &
extinguishment of fires
• Designing & installing building services so that they
do no assist the spread of fire, smoke or toxic fumes
• Designing & providing adequate and safe escape
routes
• Selecting materials for the construction which will
not promote the rapid spread of fire or generate
dangerous smoke

3. • Subdividing buildings into compartments of reasonable
sizes by means of fire resisting walls & floors, providing
fire stops to protect openings between floors &
compartments
• Designing & constructing the exterior of a building so
that fire is unlikely to spread to it from another burning
building.
• OSH and fire awareness/detection program as well as
housekeeping program should be conducted for
employee.

4. FIRE PREVENTION EQUIPMENT
Smoke detector
•Function is to warn occupants of a fire in time
for them to leave the building
•It uses a radioactive source to detect smoke

5. Heat Detector
•A heat detector is a fire alarm device designed to
respond when the converted thermal energy of a fire
increases the temperature of a heat sensitive element
•Once the heat in an area reaches that predetermined
number, the heat detector sends a signal.
• Once the ambient temperature of a room reaches
lower degree, the signal goes out and the alarm goes
off.

6. Flammable gas detector
•function is used to give early warning of leaks
from plant containing flammable gases or
vapors
•If a specified gas concentration or set point is
exceeded, the detector system should trigger an
alarm.

7. Sprinkler
The use of sprinkle is to:
•To detect, control and extinguish a fire
•To warn the occupants of the occurrence of fire

8. Hose Reel System
intended for the occupant to use during the early stages of
fire
Hose reel:
•A 30m coverage of each hose reel
•One hose reel for every 800sq.mof usable floor space
•Located along escape routes or besides exit doors or
staircase

•Is uses for fighting fires in their incipient stages.
