The Chevrolet Cobalt Vehicle
General Motors acted in an unethical and negligent way by choosing not to take action when
becoming aware of a fault in their ignition switch of the Chevrolet Cobalt vehicle. This caused the
engine and electrical system to shut off if the keys were knocked, and ultimately resulting in multiple
deaths due to the airbags not deploying during car accidents.
General Motors first became aware of the problem in 2004 after a situation of the ignition switching
off the vehicle after accidentally making contact with the key. Other employees soon replicated the
ignition switch defect during test drives throughout that year. While engineers for G.M. suggested a
fix to the issue, executives due to consideration of the lead time required, cost and ... Show more

I feel saddened for the families of those involved in the fatal crashes that are a consequence of G.M. s
negligent action in pursuing and correcting this problem. They were let down by a large corporation
who knowingly were aware of a defect in the Chevrolet Cobalt, and if I was to be put in their
situation, I would feel deep resentment towards General Motors. However, I am not surprised as I do
already have a strong distrust for large corporations. After having read countless reports on the news
of the unethical, and often illegal, courses of action that companies will do in order to essentially
reduce costs and increase profits. While I feel angered by this, my feelings are irrelevant to
corporations as they are only interested in ways in which they can increase profit.
I felt the same way after having studied the Enron case earlier in the semester. Though I feel Enron has
acted more unethically and unscrupulous intentionally than General Motors, I am still saddened and
sorrowful for the individuals and families who were unknowingly being lied to by the corporations.
Individuals and families involved in these cases feel both an emotional and physical loss. I feel as
someone who values honesty, it angers me that innocent people were affected in this way and taken
advantage of. Enron s profit driven executives treated these individuals and families unfairly, as were
the families of those involved in

A Research Study On Business Research
CHAPTER 3
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
1. Introduction
Business research is considered as a truth seeking function that collects, analyses and reports
information which enables decision makers to become more effective in their decision making
(Alvesson and Deetz, 2000). Conducting primary research is inevitable as far as the aim of this
research is concerned. However it is vital that the right kind of methodology be adopted which helps
the researcher to achieve the research aim properly. In the selection of right methodology, this study
seeks to identify the possible ways by which a research of this nature can be conducted and the
reasons behind the selection of particular philosophy, methods, data collection, sampling and analysis
techniques.
1.2 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This in fact enabled the researcher to select the philosophy which best suits to achieve the research
aim. Saunders et al. (2000) state that two views pertaining to philosophy dominate the literature. They
are positivism and phenomenology. They add that both of the philosophies are important as far as
business and management research is concerned. It can be found that Saunders et al. (2009) divided
the research philosophy into different clusters. They are positivism, interpretivism, pragmatism and
realism.
1.2.1 Positivism
The positivistic approach is the traditional approach of the natural scientist. This approach is
considered as independent and also objective where research is undertaken in a value freeway and
only the observable phenomena provide credible data (Saunders et al. 2009). Therefore in positivistic
research the influence of the researcher on research is kept at the minimum possible way and the
instruments and methods used for this should be enabling the researcher in this regard. The
methodological underpinning of survey research and experimental studies is positivism. Scientific
rigour of doing research is thus one of the characteristics of positivistic research (Jupp, 2006).
Easterby Smith et al. (2012) state that positivist methods is usually based on the assumption that there
is the presence of true

The Middle Passage Analysis
In The Middle Passage Documentary by Steven Spielberg, the trans Atlantic slave trade is analyzed
and broken down to reveal the true horrors endured by millions of African Americans through the four
hundred years it occurred. Step by step, it travels through the journey the slaves suffered through,
from the initial capturing to the moments they arrived in America, only to be auctioned off as no more
than lowly farm animals. The documentary shows the overall journey of the Middle Passage and the
trials involved, but the book Copper Sun by Sharon Draper portrays it in a different light. The novel
follows an enslaved African by the name of Amari through the horrors of the capture, forced
migration, and voyage to the land of the whites. Another perspective within the book is of a white girl
named Polly who is braving the hardships that come with being an indentured servant. Yet what both
the documentary and novel show are the unbreakable spirits of the ones who were forced to withstand
the barbarous actions of the people who imprisoned them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the young children on the ship on their way to America both appealed to the empathy and compassion
for the wrongs of the past. Visuals such as pictures and drawings from the time allowed the viewer to

Islamic Microfinance And Islamic Institutions
Millions of poor practicing Muslims around the world need access to Sharia (Islamic law) compliant
financial tools. According to CGAP 2013, there are around 255 Islamic microfinance providers in the
world (Figure 1 and 2). Studies conducted in Bangladesh, Sudan and Indonesia show that Islamic
microfinance is growing at much faster rate than conventional microfinance. TechNavio forecasts the
market to grow at a CAGR of 19.7 percent over the period 2013 2018. There is a huge opportunity for
the growth of Islamic Microfinance in Pakistan as well. This sector is scattered and there is a need for
concerted effort on part of the policymakers and financial institutions to provide diversity in
products/providers and sustainable Islamic financing models. The government of Pakistan is keen on
expanding the Islamic banking sector and it makes sense to focus on Islamic microfinance sector at
the same time.
Introduction
Microfinance institutions (MFI) have seen tremendous growth globally over the last few decades.
Microfinance helps alleviate poverty and reduce income inequality by providing small loans to
economically disadvantaged strata of the society. MFIs help poor secure microloans, who are not part
of the formal economy, are not part of the banking system and have no collaterals against which they
can borrow. A problem with microloans is the high interest rate which can, instead of reducing
poverty, exacerbate the problem. The interest rates can be as high as 31% and are

1.3 Analyse how national and local guidelines, policies, and procedures for safeguarding affect day to
day work with children and young people
The Government set out legislation and laws for the safeguarding of children and this is passed on to
organisations on a local level for settings to access on a more personal level. This means the setting
has access to a more tailored support that they might benefit from, as well as working with
professionals who are more familiar with the setting in question.
The Suffolk Safeguarding Board is an informative website where all safeguarding policies and
procedures can be accessed. A setting could use this information as guidelines for writing their own
policies and be certain they are implementing information from a national level for use on the ground.
The list of policies they offer include working with children in need to mental health and fostering,
among many other topics, all under the umbrella of safeguarding vulnerable individuals. Its aim is to
ensure that partner organisations are aware of safeguarding arrangements
(http://suffolkscb.org.uk/about us/).

conduct operational test and evaluation of new acquired weapon systems, support systems, and aircraft
for the U.S. Navy. In interfacing with mission systems and fleet introduction, Air and Test Evaluation
Squadron One does it first.
In the acquisition phase, the navy has several initial and developmental test and evaluation squadrons;
however, these squadron use contract and government maintenance and flight personnel to conduct
primary and subsequent examination and analysis of newly acquired systems in a controlled

The Optimistic Philosophy in Candide by Voltaire Essay
Why do bad things happen to good people? A question often asked by...well, by just about everyone. It
is a frequently asked question that philosophers and religious figures have tried to answer for centuries
yet no one can pinpoint the answer. Candide is no doubt Voltaire s response to the answer given by
some of the philosophers of his time. The philosophy discussed throughout the novel gives meaning to
the story itself and contributes to and carries on throughout the entire story.
In the Baron s castle somewhere in Germany the main characters reside for a short time. Pangloss, the
philosopher and teacher of the Baron s children, has a radical philosophy on life and passes it to his
students. This philosophy doesn t help them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Providing a simple explanation for Pangloss optimistic philosophy that we live in the best of all
possible worlds this quote appears in the first chapter of the story and sets up one of the main themes
throughout the novel. It s basically the logic behind Pangloss philosophy, though it makes no sense. It
seems quite obvious that spectacles were designed to fit the nose and not the other way around. These
are the first of many very illogical arguments to support his philosophy. As the novel progresses this
philosophy goes under brutal attacks by the misfortunes the characters come across again and again
throughout their lives. It also sets up the never ending debate between those characters with the
optimistic view and those with the pessimistic view. Voltaire uses Pangloss philosophy to demonstrate
a point. Because he so strongly opposes this philosophy it s a recurring theme in the novel.
The optimistic view is also the main example of satire from Voltaire in the novel and this is probably
the purpose for writing the novel. It could be interpreted as his response to philosophers of the time,
G.W. von Leibniz in particular. Leibniz claimed that because God is perfect, all good and all powerful,
He wouldn t create a less than perfect world; therefore, we live in the best of all possible worlds.
Leibniz also said that evil is

The Trends And Trends Of The 1960s
Every year, designers present a fall collection. When examining the runway shows and styles
displayed as a whole, one starts to notice multiple trends. Although the designers give people the
trends, the consumer is the deciding factor of what is or is not a trend in everyday life and not just in
the fashion world. There are many different trends, which are categorized into major and minor trends.
Three major trends and forecasts seen numerous times in fall 2014 runway shows and magazines are
plaid, 60s inspired, and fairytale inspired styles. 1960 s Inspired Trend. The 1960s are back in fashion
in a huge way. One can see the inspiration from the 60s all over the runway and retail stores. When
looking at forecasts for fall 2014, Trend Council predicted 60s inspired clothing would be in style
during the fall 2014 season. They predicted the styles seen would be elegant shift dresses, hitting
about mid thigh. The shift dress was first introduced in the early 60s and the style immediately
became popular. To consumers in the 1960 s, the shift dress represented youth, freedom and the
revolutionary spirit of American young women. Now the shift dress is classy again with a high neck,
long sleeves and neutral colors.
Miu Miu, Valentino, Louis Vuitton, and Gucci are just a few of the high end designers feature 60s
inspired pieces in their collection. Valentino s show had a mod sixties aspect: the shirt collar dresses,
the embroidered tulle gowns, and capes of all kinds in lace,

Scientific Racism and Antisemitism
Nazism, or Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei was a form of fascism that incorporated
scientific racism and antisemitism; National socialism opposed ideas of equality and international
solidarity. This united rich and poor Germans for a common national project without eliminating class
differences. Volksgemein Schaftor or people s community . Theories of racial hierarchy and social
darwinism asserted the superiority of an Aryan Master race. The nazis sought to exterminate or at the
very least impose segregation upon groups they considered to be degenerate . Some such groups were
jews, homosexuals, blacks and the mentally and physically handicapped. By the early 1920 s Adolf
Hitler had become the movement s leader and assumed control of the organization. The organization
called for a united Greater Germany that would deny citizenship to Jews or those of Jewish descent. In
Mein kampf, written in 1924, Hitler said Nazism preserved pure elements from the left and the right in
politics.
The ideology of Hitler s Nazism was based upon the idea of the Aryan Race being the so called Master
Race . The Aryan Race was a grouping of European and Western Asian Heritage, or also known as
Caucasian Heritage. There a five main subtypes of the Aryan Race: Nordic, Mediterranean, Dinaric,
Alpine, and East Baltic. Those people were defined physically with blonde or light brown hair and

Mental State Of A Social Environment
The Child that Lives from Within
The social sciences often question if psychopathic behaviour is innate or a product of a social
environment. In the movie Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock, Norman Bates downfall proposes how crucial
a healthy childhood is to the mental state of a developing child. Contrary to nature focused beliefs, not
all human behaviour comes from an individual s genetic makeup, but rather through experiences that
become ingrained in the mind like scripture (Cooke 25). Theories proposed by Sigmund Freud and
other research comparing the relation between psychopathy and environment can help to rationalize
the reasons behind Norman Bates unsuccessful childhood, the impact of his parent child relationship
on his self perception, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Beginning as a child, Norman kills his mother and her partner out of jealousy. In light of Freudian
theory, the Oedipus complex, Norman emulates the mythological king Oedipus...a young boy who is
sexually attracted to his mother, and as a result desires to kill his father in order to possess the mother
( Hitchcock Psychoanalysis , pars. 10). Norman s deep infatuation makes him unable to discern where
to put his sexual feelings towards her. Freud suggests that normal children are able to relocate their
intimate emotions onto different people and things (Ponce, pars. 4). Although, Norman experiences
hysterical amnesia which is the repression of infantile sexuality (Ponce, pars. 4). In this case,
biological determinism, an explanation that psychotic behaviour is an innate deficit, does not relate to
Norman after it is clear that his repressed childhood memories reflect his adult behaviour.
Additionally, the way his behaviour changes once he takes on the role of his mother shows the
challenges of their past bond. Norman plays his mother up to be cruel and capable of murder. Peter
Murris findings propose that Norman s negative representation of his mother and behaviour are
symptoms related to low levels of parental care (5). Familial factors explain why children struggle
with psychological problems, demonstrated in the context Norman emulates his mother. As a result,
Norman s life from infancy to adulthood is filled with

Show Boat Scene Analysis
To be sure, sound summons our attention to the spatial and temporal dimensions of a scene by putting
us in the point of view to it. The audio in films completes what our eyes expect to see. In fact, sound
brings the scene together because, without the audio, our minds could not reasonably finish the scene.
This particular art form began in 1927, when a Universal employee, Jack Foley helped turn the film
studios silent film Show Boat into a musical. Because the microphones only picked up the dialogue,
Foley added the sounds later. First, he projected the film onto a screen and recorded the movement,

Opposition To Slavery Dbq
Slavery has been a widespread practice for decades, before slowly disappearing. In the period from
1776 to 1852 there was both opposition and approval for slavery in the United States. However,
underlying forces such as change in religious morals, the rise of abolition groups and the abolition
movement, and support in the black community contributed to growing opposition over slavery in this
period. Change in religious morals was probably one of the major causes for growing opposition to
slavery. People were beginning to use Christian ideals to support the stance that all men were created
equal, as stated in the Declaration of Independence that was signed in 1776 when the nation was first
founded. Whereas laws once allowed the harsh treatment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Such support even existed in places where slavery was no longer legal, which could have promoted
the eventual opposition of slavery in other places, especially when blacks in free states would buy the
freedom of their family who were located in slave states. This is evident in document C, where it
mentions how the Reverend Mr. Gloucester visited New Jersey to find financial aid to free his wife
and children. In this black community, people were able to come up with a good sum of money,
though they were also poor, to help Mr. Gloucester. This is an example of how helpful blacks were to
one another during this odd time of the debate over slavery. Inspiration to others in the black
community was important too. Frederick Douglass, when enslaved and treated extremely inhumanely,
managed to find himself fighting back against his white overseer (Doc. G). Fighting back became a
widespread tactic to shut down the support for slavery, whether it was through subtle disobedience or
physical resistance. There was also support through media, which protected and informed blacks.
There were advertisements for Uncle Tom s Cabin directed toward the black community for sale.
Posters existed to warn free blacks of white officers (Doc. I), showing how even when trying to find
freedom, slaves were still hunted down and denied their basic rights. However,

Bitzer s Rhetorical Model
Scott McWhirter
English 101 Section 043
Professor Hayes
March 31, 2011
Bitzer s The Rhetorical Situation Penguin responses to climate change in the Southern Ocean by
Jaume Forcada and Philip N. Trathan (2009) was a study conducted to analyze and predict the
migrating patterns of different species of penguins due to changes in climate. (p. 1618) Also, Forcada
and Trathan investigate whether or not certain species of penguins possess phenotypic plasticity (the
ability of an organism to change its phenotype in response to changes in the environment) (p. 1618).

will be consulted. This rhetorical model consists of three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the authors of this article regularly use a multitude of sources, data, and statistics to support
their hypothesis, there are several (not all) which seem to be overly used and randomly cited. This
may serve as a constraint to the audience because if the information presented does not seem to be
entirely relevant, it may be a painless assumption for the audience that the issue at hand is not an
incredibly urgent one, but instead, a rhetoric discoursed just for the sake of rhetoric. Also, the
overwhelming wealth of information shown may serve as a distraction from the simple fact the
rhetoric is trying to convey: penguins are affected by climate change; in result, penguins affect the
environment. The information does not, however, prove to be faulty, but each piece of data seems to
be calculated accurately. For example, a table is provided that names each species of penguin, the
threats against them, and their resulting response to that threat. This makes it very clear whether each
species has the ability to adapt, or if the climate change has just caused them to disperse. Also, each
piece of data is affiliated with a source, which increases the audience s opinion of the writer s
character.
Another aspect of the research that does seem to constrain the author s point of view, however, is the
fact that no actual experiment was conducted by F amp; T.

1. What caused the change in HR with exercise? Muscles use more oxygen and glucose from the
blood with increased movement. This produces wastes that decrease blood pH below the normal range
causing an increase in heart rate. The heart rate increase delivers blood to the lungs and kidneys more
quickly so these organs can remove the wastes from the body. The faster the muscles use energy and
create waste, the faster the heart must pump blood. 2. Discuss the effect of venous

Supplier Diversity In The 1980 s
In the early 1980 s, the small town of Clarkston, Georgia could be best described as a neighborly and
old fashioned southern town It was a place where kids played baseball, everybody knew their
neighbors, and English was the spoken language However, things changed by the mid 1980 s, when
Clarkstonbecame a large resettlement location for refugees from mainly the middle east. The town
was appealing because of affordable housing and easily accessible jobs in Atlanta. By 2000, the
United States Census showed that one third of Clarkston s resident were foreign born, thus making it a
perfect description of Steven Vertovec s newly coined term of supplier diversity. Communities
struggling with their newly diverse environment use Clarkston as an example ... Show more content

Bill owned a failing local store called Thriftown, which was failing in the community. Bill made the
store saving decision when decided to hire a Vietnamese refugee named Hong Diep Vo.. Hong came to
Bill with an idea to start offering international food. This idea was successful because there were no
international food joints within thirty miles of Clarkston..This adaptation and action saved Bill s store
and brought him closer with the refugees, as they are his main customers. This adaptation is
something many business owners could learn from. For example, you cannot fight change, you can
only adapt and change with it. This ideology is shown by the new police chief, Tony J. Scipio, who
goesundercover for two weeks to learn about the community and their opinions on how the police
interacts with them. What Scipio found is there wasn t trust between the police and the community
anymore after many unjust acts by police. The refugees felt singled out as they had limited knowledge
of the law.Scipio lost 7 officers within the month either by quitting or being fired. He turned the police
force into a group of people who treated the community members with courtesy, professionalism, and
respect (179). Scipio did this through diversity training and writing many violations to his officers
who did not uphold the rules. These changes helped repair the harm done by previous officers This
adaptation shows how you can heal governmental distrust within a community in constant

John Stuart Mill s Definition Of Quality
John Stuart Mill s definition of quality can be broken down distinctively into four separate definitions.
When evaluating pleasures, J. S. Mill alleged the quality of particular pleasures is determined by how
much pleasure the person obtains from the pleasure, in addition to, how just the pleasure is
beneficially to society. Moreover, Mill argued against ...Bentham s purely quantitative view of
pleasure. Without denying that quantity is a consideration in the calculation of pleasure, Mill believed
that it is not as important as the consideration of quality (MILL S VERSION: QUALITY OVER
QUANTITY ). Therefore, the following details Mill explicates quality and quantity, exemplifying
each of these ideas. First, quality may be defined as the qualities, properties or powers of something.
For example, raindrops have the quality of being small, clear and wet. Meaning, when it rains, the
raindrops hold the power to produce, in a humans mind, the idea and/or feeling of being small, clear
and wet. This idea of quality simply means the power something has. In a second sense, when the
word quality is opposed to quantity , it is a name or label under which we class the properties or
qualities that something possesses other than quantity (Vergara 5). The following compares two items
that only differ in quantity, but not quality. For example, the quality of two bottles filled with the same
type of water has the same quality, however, the quantity of the water differs. Whereas,

The Big Hunting Game By Ernest Hemingway And Theodore...
The Big Hunting Game
Since ancient times, humans for the necessity of food, hunted wild animals, as they did not know how
to organize a farm. They lived as nomads following the movement of their prey. Then the man began
to breed animals, and this allowed him to have a fixed residence and hunting was no longer necessary,
though not as much. Now, the hunt is no longer practiced for food, but for fun and sport, called Big
Hunting. Captured and killed for trophies sport in Africa, the hunting of animals is a real business. The
charm of the big game is never set; it is timeless. Past the period of the great explorations of the great
Victorian and white hunters such as Ernest Hemingway and Theodore Roosevelt, the desire to hunt
and kill a big cat is still written in the genes of some. It feeds the fantasies of American hunters, that
pay astronomical sums to kill a lion to show off as a trophy at their residence. Big Hunting is a new
trend in sports today that has support from the conservationists as well as the hunters; however, the
sport also sparks an ethical debate from the opponents of the Animal Rights and Fish and Wild Life
Services.
According to Norimitsu Onishi, the big hunting game is associated with the haunting of Africa Big
Five trophy animals. The Big Five animals hunted for the trophies are the Lion, the African Elephant,
the White Rhinoceros, the Leopard, and the Cape Buffalo. In this wild game, we find the supporters
that they support the cause of hunting

. . It s not that exciting, the way they tell you about them. It s just like, Oh yeah, there s a football

Zecker made his opinion on the lack of awareness of sporting events on campus known, pointing the
finger at UMass athletics.
I don t think the athletic department does a great job marketing the games to the students, he
explained.
I feel like, a lot of times, students don t even know that there s games, and I feel like if students did

But is it just a matter of fact that, in the eyes of the students, there are simply better alternatives to
going to a UMass game on any day of the week. Whether it s staying in to study, going out on
weekends with friends, or simply a lack of interest, many students put sporting events on campus low
on their to do list.
Sometimes, it s not even the school s fault, Army ROTC member and hockey fan Jack Breck said.

Post Impressionism Art Analysis
The Impression of Post Impressionism Art
The Impressionism era was a very important movement in the history of art. The artists
under that movement were not very popular since the style was very different. The product of
Impressionism, Post Impressionism has a more distorted, expressive style because their rules in
terms of content were more free. I will compare and contrast the paintings of this era, Houses at
Auvers by Vincent van Gogh, Goldfish by Henri Matisse, and Mont Sainte Victoire by Paul
Cézanne.
The work of art Houses at Auvers by Vincent van Gogh was made after he left the
asylum at Saint Rémy de Provence. He admitted himself there because he was very sad and
before he arrived he cut off his ear and gave it to a prostitute as a gift. He only resided there for a
short amount of time (the end of 1888 1890) because he became bored. As a result, he moved to
Auvers sur Oise, northwest of Paris. There, he painted Houses at Auvers in June of 1890 which
was one of several works of art made before his suicide in the same year.
Houses at Auvers depicts a landscape of early summer in Auvers sur Oise. It s medium,
like most paintings in this era, is oil on canvas. In this work of art, viewers can see that the
function is for the visual aesthetic, since Van Gogh was really embracing his surroundings by
how he painted it. He used a lot of different values of color, especially the greens in the trees,
grass, and bushes. Lines and brushstrokes

Differences Between Bible Myths And Greek Myths
Last week, I have read the GREEK MYTHS and I found there are some similarities and differences
between Bible and Greek myths, even sometimes are similar with Chinese myths.
After reading the Bible and Greek myths, you will find the biggest difference is that the number of
gods is totally different. In the Bible, they only believe in one God faithfully; however, people believe
in twelve big Gods and other small Gods in the GREEK MYTHS, such as Zeus, Athene, Poseidon,
Apollo, Cupid and so on. The reason why they have such a difference is that God in the Bible can do
everything and he controlled all the rights by himself, but in Greek all the Gods had different abilities
and do their best in their fields. Another reason is that God s image can

Plastic and reconstructive surgery are delicate procedures, so having the 3 D printing allows surgeons

Organic Compounds
Organic Compounds CH3CH2 O CH2CH2CH2CH3 This chemical is known as butyl ethyl ether. It is
a type of ether that is a colorless liquid and falls within the R O R functional group (Chemical Book,
2012). The compound is extremely flammable, and as such, fire and other safety professionals must
take great care when handling chemical fires burning with the substance. The research shows that the
compound will be easily ignited by heat, sparks or flame, but also that vapors may form explosive
mixtures with air. Vapors may travel to source of ignition and flash back (Chemical Book, 2012). This
makes the vapor from this organic compound incredibly dangerous in terms of fire risk in doors, but
can also cause problems outdoors as well. Fire and safety officials must be careful in enclosed areas.
Often, this flash will spread throughout lower lying areas, such as basements and sewers. Moreover, it
is incompatible with oxidizing agents, making it unsafe to try to extinguish chemical fires of this
nature with water (Chemical Book, 2012). CH3CH2CH CH2CH2OH I CH3 The chemical compound
presented here is also known as 3 methyl pentanol. It is based on an alcohol in the OH functional
group. Thus, it has the functional group of R O H (TCI America, 2012). Along with the other chemical

Career Information Systems: An Overview
The best known computer based career information systems are the state based career information
delivery systems (CIDS). Serving over 9 million customers yearly at more than 20,000 sites, CIDS
operate in 48 states and provide information about occupations and educational programs within that
state (Mariani 1995 96; National Occupational Information Coordinating Committee 1996). Although
CIDS have been developed by a number of different vendors and customized for particular audiences,
they share the following core features (ibid.):
Assessment. Most CIDS now have one or more online tools that help users assess their values,
interests, skills, aptitudes, or experiences as well as the characteristics they expect from a job. These
assessments help users learn about themselves and the qualities they might prefer in a career. A
relatively new feature of CIDS, skills assessments have proven especially helpful to experienced
workers who need to find a new career.
Occupational Search. The occupational search feature allows users to match personal characteristics
with compatible job and career possibilities. Some occupational searches are based on the results of
the assessments, but, in others, the user selects and rates search variables that are then used to generate
a list of occupations. Users may also simply access an index of occupations

Why Women Still Can t Have It All By Anne Marie Slaughter
Even today, in 2017, the issue of equality in the workplace is a very real and talked about problem.
Sheryl Sandberg talks about this issue in Lean In: What Would You Do If You Weren t Afraid. She
proposes the idea that the reason women do not receive results equal to their male counterparts is not
because of lack of opportunity, but because they are choosing to pursue different priorities than men.
In Why Women Still Can t Have It All, Anne Marie Slaughter discusses the idea that in today s
economic and social environment, it is not realistic for women to try to have it all. Similarly, Richard
Dorment writes about why it is not just women that can t have it all in his book, Why Men Still Can t
Have It All. There are always at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Critics of Sandberg say she blames women for the problem, but it is apparent that her enthusiasm for
women is misunderstood for criticism. Sandberg quotes and endorses Judith Rodin s statement that
My generation fought so hard to give all of you choices. We believe in choices (645). Slaughter and
Dorment s articles focus more on the cause and effect of this phenomenon, but their messages at the
root are the same. In recent history, the majority of the movement regarding the gender gap in the
workplace has been in response to the opportunity available to males versus female. Today however,
that debate topic has shifted to explain why opportunity does not grantee professional success and
what role society plays on that restriction. It was already said by Sandberg that a difference in biology
affects the choices individuals make, and that issue alone is independent from any social construct that
would usually affect choices. Slaughter outlines one of these societal flaws is in the unspoken rules or
norms of hiring and firing in Washington. She states, to admit to, much less act on, maternal longings
would have been fatal to their careers. Often a euphemism for being fired is saying that one is leaving
to focus on homemaking. It seems to be implied by the authors that often, merely having a family that
deserves time and

  • 2. The Chevrolet Cobalt Vehicle General Motors acted in an unethical and negligent way by choosing not to take action when becoming aware of a fault in their ignition switch of the Chevrolet Cobalt vehicle. This caused the engine and electrical system to shut off if the keys were knocked, and ultimately resulting in multiple deaths due to the airbags not deploying during car accidents. General Motors first became aware of the problem in 2004 after a situation of the ignition switching off the vehicle after accidentally making contact with the key. Other employees soon replicated the ignition switch defect during test drives throughout that year. While engineers for G.M. suggested a fix to the issue, executives due to consideration of the lead time required, cost and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I feel saddened for the families of those involved in the fatal crashes that are a consequence of G.M. s negligent action in pursuing and correcting this problem. They were let down by a large corporation who knowingly were aware of a defect in the Chevrolet Cobalt, and if I was to be put in their situation, I would feel deep resentment towards General Motors. However, I am not surprised as I do already have a strong distrust for large corporations. After having read countless reports on the news of the unethical, and often illegal, courses of action that companies will do in order to essentially reduce costs and increase profits. While I feel angered by this, my feelings are irrelevant to corporations as they are only interested in ways in which they can increase profit. I felt the same way after having studied the Enron case earlier in the semester. Though I feel Enron has acted more unethically and unscrupulous intentionally than General Motors, I am still saddened and sorrowful for the individuals and families who were unknowingly being lied to by the corporations. Individuals and families involved in these cases feel both an emotional and physical loss. I feel as someone who values honesty, it angers me that innocent people were affected in this way and taken advantage of. Enron s profit driven executives treated these individuals and families unfairly, as were the families of those involved in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. A Research Study On Business Research CHAPTER 3 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY 1. Introduction Business research is considered as a truth seeking function that collects, analyses and reports information which enables decision makers to become more effective in their decision making (Alvesson and Deetz, 2000). Conducting primary research is inevitable as far as the aim of this research is concerned. However it is vital that the right kind of methodology be adopted which helps the researcher to achieve the research aim properly. In the selection of right methodology, this study seeks to identify the possible ways by which a research of this nature can be conducted and the reasons behind the selection of particular philosophy, methods, data collection, sampling and analysis techniques. 1.2 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This in fact enabled the researcher to select the philosophy which best suits to achieve the research aim. Saunders et al. (2000) state that two views pertaining to philosophy dominate the literature. They are positivism and phenomenology. They add that both of the philosophies are important as far as business and management research is concerned. It can be found that Saunders et al. (2009) divided the research philosophy into different clusters. They are positivism, interpretivism, pragmatism and realism. 1.2.1 Positivism The positivistic approach is the traditional approach of the natural scientist. This approach is considered as independent and also objective where research is undertaken in a value freeway and only the observable phenomena provide credible data (Saunders et al. 2009). Therefore in positivistic research the influence of the researcher on research is kept at the minimum possible way and the instruments and methods used for this should be enabling the researcher in this regard. The methodological underpinning of survey research and experimental studies is positivism. Scientific rigour of doing research is thus one of the characteristics of positivistic research (Jupp, 2006). Easterby Smith et al. (2012) state that positivist methods is usually based on the assumption that there is the presence of true ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Middle Passage Analysis In The Middle Passage Documentary by Steven Spielberg, the trans Atlantic slave trade is analyzed and broken down to reveal the true horrors endured by millions of African Americans through the four hundred years it occurred. Step by step, it travels through the journey the slaves suffered through, from the initial capturing to the moments they arrived in America, only to be auctioned off as no more than lowly farm animals. The documentary shows the overall journey of the Middle Passage and the trials involved, but the book Copper Sun by Sharon Draper portrays it in a different light. The novel follows an enslaved African by the name of Amari through the horrors of the capture, forced migration, and voyage to the land of the whites. Another perspective within the book is of a white girl named Polly who is braving the hardships that come with being an indentured servant. Yet what both the documentary and novel show are the unbreakable spirits of the ones who were forced to withstand the barbarous actions of the people who imprisoned them. ... The sound effects and voice recordings of the young children on the ship on their way to America both appealed to the empathy and compassion for the wrongs of the past. According to CGAP 2013, there are around 255 Islamic microfinance providers in the world (Figure 1 and 2). Studies conducted in Bangladesh, Sudan and Indonesia show that Islamic microfinance is growing at much faster rate than conventional microfinance. TechNavio forecasts the market to grow at a CAGR of 19.7 percent over the period 2013 2018. There is a huge opportunity for the growth of Islamic Microfinance in Pakistan as well. This sector is scattered and there is a need for concerted effort on part of the policymakers and financial institutions to provide diversity in products/providers and sustainable Islamic financing models. The government of Pakistan is keen on expanding the Islamic banking sector and it makes sense to focus on Islamic microfinance sector at the same time. Introduction Microfinance institutions (MFI) have seen tremendous growth globally over the last few decades. Microfinance helps alleviate poverty and reduce income inequality by providing small loans to economically disadvantaged strata of the society. MFIs help poor secure microloans, who are not part of the formal economy, are not part of the banking system and have no collaterals against which they can borrow. A problem with microloans is the high interest rate which can, instead of reducing poverty, exacerbate the problem. The interest rates can be as high as 31% and are ... This means the setting has access to a more tailored support that they might benefit from, as well as working with professionals who are more familiar with the setting in question. The Suffolk Safeguarding Board is an informative website where all safeguarding policies and procedures can be accessed. A setting could use this information as guidelines for writing their own policies and be certain they are implementing information from a national level for use on the ground. The list of policies they offer include working with children in need to mental health and fostering, among many other topics, all under the umbrella of safeguarding vulnerable individuals. In the acquisition phase, the navy has several initial and developmental test and evaluation squadrons; however, these squadron use contract and government maintenance and flight personnel to conduct primary and subsequent examination and analysis of newly acquired systems in a controlled environment. After completion of initial and developmental test, the weapon systems, support systems, and aircraft are forwarded for operational test and evaluation. • 9. The Optimistic Philosophy in Candide by Voltaire Essay Why do bad things happen to good people? A question often asked by...well, by just about everyone. It is a frequently asked question that philosophers and religious figures have tried to answer for centuries yet no one can pinpoint the answer. Candide is no doubt Voltaire s response to the answer given by some of the philosophers of his time. The philosophy discussed throughout the novel gives meaning to the story itself and contributes to and carries on throughout the entire story. In the Baron s castle somewhere in Germany the main characters reside for a short time. Pangloss, the philosopher and teacher of the Baron s children, has a radical philosophy on life and passes it to his students. This philosophy doesn t help them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Providing a simple explanation for Pangloss optimistic philosophy that we live in the best of all possible worlds this quote appears in the first chapter of the story and sets up one of the main themes throughout the novel. It s basically the logic behind Pangloss philosophy, though it makes no sense. It seems quite obvious that spectacles were designed to fit the nose and not the other way around. These are the first of many very illogical arguments to support his philosophy. As the novel progresses this philosophy goes under brutal attacks by the misfortunes the characters come across again and again throughout their lives. It also sets up the never ending debate between those characters with the optimistic view and those with the pessimistic view. Voltaire uses Pangloss philosophy to demonstrate a point. Because he so strongly opposes this philosophy it s a recurring theme in the novel. The optimistic view is also the main example of satire from Voltaire in the novel and this is probably the purpose for writing the novel. It could be interpreted as his response to philosophers of the time, G.W. von Leibniz in particular. Leibniz claimed that because God is perfect, all good and all powerful, He wouldn t create a less than perfect world; therefore, we live in the best of all possible worlds. Leibniz also said that evil is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Trends And Trends Of The 1960s Every year, designers present a fall collection. When examining the runway shows and styles displayed as a whole, one starts to notice multiple trends. Although the designers give people the trends, the consumer is the deciding factor of what is or is not a trend in everyday life and not just in the fashion world. There are many different trends, which are categorized into major and minor trends. Three major trends and forecasts seen numerous times in fall 2014 runway shows and magazines are plaid, 60s inspired, and fairytale inspired styles. 1960 s Inspired Trend. The 1960s are back in fashion in a huge way. One can see the inspiration from the 60s all over the runway and retail stores. When looking at forecasts for fall 2014, Trend Council predicted 60s inspired clothing would be in style during the fall 2014 season. They predicted the styles seen would be elegant shift dresses, hitting about mid thigh. The shift dress was first introduced in the early 60s and the style immediately became popular. To consumers in the 1960 s, the shift dress represented youth, freedom and the revolutionary spirit of American young women. Now the shift dress is classy again with a high neck, long sleeves and neutral colors. In the movie Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock, Norman Bates downfall proposes how crucial a healthy childhood is to the mental state of a developing child. Contrary to nature focused beliefs, not all human behaviour comes from an individual s genetic makeup, but rather through experiences that become ingrained in the mind like scripture (Cooke 25). In light of Freudian theory, the Oedipus complex, Norman emulates the mythological king Oedipus...a young boy who is sexually attracted to his mother, and as a result desires to kill his father in order to possess the mother ( Hitchcock Psychoanalysis , pars. 10). Norman s deep infatuation makes him unable to discern where to put his sexual feelings towards her. Freud suggests that normal children are able to relocate their intimate emotions onto different people and things (Ponce, pars. 4). Although, Norman experiences hysterical amnesia which is the repression of infantile sexuality (Ponce, pars. 4). In this case, biological determinism, an explanation that psychotic behaviour is an innate deficit, does not relate to Norman after it is clear that his repressed childhood memories reflect his adult behaviour. Additionally, the way his behaviour changes once he takes on the role of his mother shows the challenges of their past bond. Norman plays his mother up to be cruel and capable of murder. Peter Murris findings propose that Norman s negative representation of his mother and behaviour are symptoms related to low levels of parental care (5). The audio in films completes what our eyes expect to see. In fact, sound brings the scene together because, without the audio, our minds could not reasonably finish the scene. • 15. Opposition To Slavery Dbq Slavery has been a widespread practice for decades, before slowly disappearing. In the period from 1776 to 1852 there was both opposition and approval for slavery in the United States. However, underlying forces such as change in religious morals, the rise of abolition groups and the abolition movement, and support in the black community contributed to growing opposition over slavery in this period. Change in religious morals was probably one of the major causes for growing opposition to slavery. People were beginning to use Christian ideals to support the stance that all men were created equal, as stated in the Declaration of Independence that was signed in 1776 when the nation was first founded. Such support even existed in places where slavery was no longer legal, which could have promoted the eventual opposition of slavery in other places, especially when blacks in free states would buy the freedom of their family who were located in slave states. This is evident in document C, where it mentions how the Reverend Mr. Gloucester visited New Jersey to find financial aid to free his wife and children. In this black community, people were able to come up with a good sum of money, though they were also poor, to help Mr. Gloucester. This is an example of how helpful blacks were to one another during this odd time of the debate over slavery. Inspiration to others in the black community was important too. Frederick Douglass, when enslaved and treated extremely inhumanely, managed to find himself fighting back against his white overseer (Doc. G). Fighting back became a widespread tactic to shut down the support for slavery, whether it was through subtle disobedience or physical resistance. There was also support through media, which protected and informed blacks. There were advertisements for Uncle Tom s Cabin directed toward the black community for sale. Posters existed to warn free blacks of white officers (Doc. I), showing how even when trying to find freedom, slaves were still hunted down and denied their basic rights. However, ... Also, the overwhelming wealth of information shown may serve as a distraction from the simple fact the rhetoric is trying to convey: penguins are affected by climate change; in result, penguins affect the environment. The information does not, however, prove to be faulty, but each piece of data seems to be calculated accurately. For example, a table is provided that names each species of penguin, the threats against them, and their resulting response to that threat. This makes it very clear whether each species has the ability to adapt, or if the climate change has just caused them to disperse. • 23. John Stuart Mill s Definition Of Quality John Stuart Mill s definition of quality can be broken down distinctively into four separate definitions. When evaluating pleasures, J. S. Mill alleged the quality of particular pleasures is determined by how much pleasure the person obtains from the pleasure, in addition to, how just the pleasure is beneficially to society. Moreover, Mill argued against ...Bentham s purely quantitative view of pleasure. Without denying that quantity is a consideration in the calculation of pleasure, Mill believed that it is not as important as the consideration of quality (MILL S VERSION: QUALITY OVER QUANTITY ). Therefore, the following details Mill explicates quality and quantity, exemplifying each of these ideas. First, quality may be defined as the qualities, properties or powers of something. For example, raindrops have the quality of being small, clear and wet. Meaning, when it rains, the raindrops hold the power to produce, in a humans mind, the idea and/or feeling of being small, clear and wet. This idea of quality simply means the power something has. In a second sense, when the word quality is opposed to quantity , it is a name or label under which we class the properties or qualities that something possesses other than quantity (Vergara 5). The following compares two items that only differ in quantity, but not quality. For example, the quality of two bottles filled with the same type of water has the same quality, however, the quantity of the water differs. Whereas, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Big Hunting Game Since ancient times, humans for the necessity of food, hunted wild animals, as they did not know how to organize a farm. They lived as nomads following the movement of their prey. Then the man began to breed animals, and this allowed him to have a fixed residence and hunting was no longer necessary, though not as much. Now, the hunt is no longer practiced for food, but for fun and sport, called Big Hunting. Captured and killed for trophies sport in Africa, the hunting of animals is a real business. The charm of the big game is never set; it is timeless. Past the period of the great explorations of the great Victorian and white hunters such as Ernest Hemingway and Theodore Roosevelt, the desire to hunt and kill a big cat is still written in the genes of some. It feeds the fantasies of American hunters, that pay astronomical sums to kill a lion to show off as a trophy at their residence. Big Hunting is a new trend in sports today that has support from the conservationists as well as the hunters; however, the sport also sparks an ethical debate from the opponents of the Animal Rights and Fish and Wild Life Services. According to Norimitsu Onishi, the big hunting game is associated with the haunting of Africa Big Five trophy animals. I will compare and contrast the paintings of this era, Houses at Auvers by Vincent van Gogh, Goldfish by Henri Matisse, and Mont Sainte Victoire by Paul Cézanne. The work of art Houses at Auvers by Vincent van Gogh was made after he left the asylum at Saint Rémy de Provence. He admitted himself there because he was very sad and before he arrived he cut off his ear and gave it to a prostitute as a gift. He only resided there for a short amount of time (the end of 1888 1890) because he became bored. As a result, he moved to Auvers sur Oise, northwest of Paris. The parents of ten year old Kevin Yintia from Kansas City was faced with this type of question earlier this year. Kevin contracted an infection living in Central African Republic while he was just a baby. This infection caused severe damage to Kevin s hip, which made him smaller than the average boy. Since Kevin was only ten years old, other methods of treatment like braces would be very costly as he would out grow them every few months (Carter). The Chief of Orthopedic Research, Dr. Richard Schwend, at Children s Mercy Hospital was able to fix Kevin s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This solid replica is a real anatomical structure in three dimensional form that allows surgeons to plan a surgical strategy using a reproduction of realistic structures. Surgeons studying the 3 D replica before the surgery allows them to look at details such as possible bone fragments and the medial and lateral structures of the bone that play an important role in planning a strategy. Planning surgical strategies enable the surgeon to take less time while also making the procedure much safer for the patients. Equally important are the new opportunities available in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Plastic and reconstructive surgery are delicate procedures, so having the 3 D printing allows surgeons to create a physical three dimensional sculpture of the particular body part before and after the changes. Chief of pediatric plastic surgery at St. Louis Children s Hospital, Dr. Albert Woo, states, I can hold it in my hand and use it to design my operation and better understand what s really going on (Karas 14). At the first visit to the doctor, the patient gets a scan done of the specific part that they want to change with a handheld 3 D scanner. The doctor then uses a specialized software to create a life size sculpture of the specific part before and after surgery. This technology enables the surgeon to give the patient a set of expectations that will be achieved as well as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Organic Compounds Organic Compounds CH3CH2 O CH2CH2CH2CH3 This chemical is known as butyl ethyl ether. It is a type of ether that is a colorless liquid and falls within the R O R functional group (Chemical Book, 2012). The compound is extremely flammable, and as such, fire and other safety professionals must take great care when handling chemical fires burning with the substance. The research shows that the compound will be easily ignited by heat, sparks or flame, but also that vapors may form explosive mixtures with air. Vapors may travel to source of ignition and flash back (Chemical Book, 2012). This makes the vapor from this organic compound incredibly dangerous in terms of fire risk in doors, but can also cause problems outdoors as well. Fire and safety officials must be careful in enclosed areas. Often, this flash will spread throughout lower lying areas, such as basements and sewers. Moreover, it is incompatible with oxidizing agents, making it unsafe to try to extinguish chemical fires of this nature with water (Chemical Book, 2012). CH3CH2CH CH2CH2OH I CH3 The chemical compound presented here is also known as 3 methyl pentanol. It is based on an alcohol in the OH functional group. Thus, it has the functional group of R O H (TCI America, 2012). Along with the other chemical compounds presented in this analysis, it is extremely flammable, and thus there must be serious precautions taken by fire and safety officials in order to prevent combustion and when trying to ... • 34. Computer-Based Career Information Systems Essay Computer Based Career Information Systems The adage information is power can certainly be applied to the marriage of career information with computers. In an era that is characterized by a rapidly changing employment and occupational outlook, the ability to access computerized career information has been empowering to both youth and adults (Bloch 1989; Tice and Gill 1991). Defined as all that people need to know to make choices and take action . . . in relation to their paid or unpaid occupational activities and in relation to their preparation for these activities (Bloch 1989, p. 120), career information includes knowledge about occupational areas and specific jobs; information about career preparation and where to obtain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Predictions about the future of CCIS are presented in conclusion. Career Information Systems: An Overview The best known computer based career information systems are the state based career information delivery systems (CIDS). Serving over 9 million customers yearly at more than 20,000 sites, CIDS operate in 48 states and provide information about occupations and educational programs within that state (Mariani 1995 96; National Occupational Information Coordinating Committee 1996). Although CIDS have been developed by a number of different vendors and customized for particular audiences, they share the following core features (ibid.): Assessment. Most CIDS now have one or more online tools that help users assess their values, interests, skills, aptitudes, or experiences as well as the characteristics they expect from a job. These assessments help users learn about themselves and the qualities they might prefer in a career. A relatively new feature of CIDS, skills assessments have proven especially helpful to experienced workers who need to find a new career. Occupational Search. The occupational search feature allows users to match personal characteristics with compatible job and career possibilities. Some occupational searches are based on the results of the assessments, but, in others, the user selects and rates search variables that are then used to generate a list of occupations. Users may also simply access an index of occupations ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. Why Women Still Can t Have It All By Anne Marie Slaughter Even today, in 2017, the issue of equality in the workplace is a very real and talked about problem. Sheryl Sandberg talks about this issue in Lean In: What Would You Do If You Weren t Afraid. She proposes the idea that the reason women do not receive results equal to their male counterparts is not because of lack of opportunity, but because they are choosing to pursue different priorities than men. In Why Women Still Can t Have It All, Anne Marie Slaughter discusses the idea that in today s economic and social environment, it is not realistic for women to try to have it all. Similarly, Richard Dorment writes about why it is not just women that can t have it all in his book, Why Men Still Can t Have It All. There are always at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Critics of Sandberg say she blames women for the problem, but it is apparent that her enthusiasm for women is misunderstood for criticism. Sandberg quotes and endorses Judith Rodin s statement that My generation fought so hard to give all of you choices. We believe in choices (645). Slaughter and Dorment s articles focus more on the cause and effect of this phenomenon, but their messages at the root are the same. In recent history, the majority of the movement regarding the gender gap in the workplace has been in response to the opportunity available to males versus female. Today however, that debate topic has shifted to explain why opportunity does not grantee professional success and what role society plays on that restriction. It was already said by Sandberg that a difference in biology affects the choices individuals make, and that issue alone is independent from any social construct that would usually affect choices. Slaughter outlines one of these societal flaws is in the unspoken rules or norms of hiring and firing in Washington. She states, to admit to, much less act on, maternal longings would have been fatal to their careers. Often a euphemism for being fired is saying that one is leaving to focus on homemaking. It seems to be implied by the authors that often, merely having a family that deserves time and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
