- 3. NORMAL FLORA •Normal flora are the microorganisms that live on another living organism (human or animal) or inanimate object without causing disease. The human body is not sterile; we become colonized by bacteria from the moment we are born.
- 4. Cont. •We are covered with, and contain within our intestines, approximately one hundred trillion bacteria that form the normal flora of our bodies. This normal flora helps to prevent us becoming colonized with more dangerous bacteria, which might lead to infection
- 5. CONT. • Normal flora depends on physiologic factors of temperature moisture and the presence of certain nutrients • Species of normal flora • (1) bacteria • (2) fungi • The normal flora can cause disease when they change their usual anatomic location
- 6. Symbiotic Relationship • (1) Mutualistic = • Both organism benefit mutually beneficial • Example Escherichia coli • Synthesizes vitamin K & B complex vitamins • In return we provide a warm moist nutrient rich environment for E.coli • (2) Communalistic = • One organism benefits the other is neither helped nor harmed

Cont. • (3) Opportunistic • Under normal condition microbe does not cause disease but if condition become conducive it can cause • Escherichia coli- • normally in our digestive tract where tract it causes no problems but if it gets into the urinary tract it can become pathogenic • Staphylococcus aureus- • commonly found in the upper respiratory tract but if it gets into a wound or a burn it can become pathogenic.
- 8. Types • There are two groups of normal flora: • Resident normal flora • Transient normal flora • Resident normal flora • The resident flora consist of relatively fixed types of microorganism regularly found in a given area at a given age if disturbed it promptly reestablishes itself
- 9. Cont. • Transient normal flora • Are non-pathogenic or potentially pathogenic microorganisms that inhabit the skin and mucus membrane for a short period of time like hours days and weeks. It is derived from the environment does not produce disease and does not establish itself permanently on the surface.
