Christianity And Paganism In Beowulf
The ideas of Christianity and paganism are not usually ones that collide. Nonetheless, the epic poem
Beowulf has several references to them both. This can largely be explained by analyzing the people
and culture of the period. While the events of the poem take place in modern day Scandinavia, the
author and audience are assumed to be residents of England. It was written in approximately 700 A.D.,
during the Anglo Saxon period. By this time, the Anglo Saxons were already largely converted to
Christianity, but there were still echoes of paganism in their society and beliefs. This is presumed to be
one of the reasons why Beowulf incorporates this unlikely mix of religions. Although Christianity and
paganism are generally thought to have few similarities, Beowulf s unknown author utilizes Christian
symbolism, allusions to paganism, and interaction between the two to make Beowulf representative of
the period in which it was written.
The author of Beowulf is overwhelmingly assumed to be a Christian monk. As a result, the Christian
references in the poem are plain to see. The first of these references comes near the beginning of the
poem. In lines 6 10, the making of the earth is depicted: ...recalling/ The Almighty making the earth,
shaping/ These beautiful plains marked off by oceans,/ Then proudly setting the sun and moon/ To
glow across the land and light it... This description mirrors a loose adaptation of God s creation of the
world in the first chapter of Genesis, and is

American Reconstruction after the Civil War Essay
Reconstruction was a period of time after the Civil War (1865 1877) that was supposed to be the
rebuilding of America. It was also the process used to readmit all the Confederate states back into the
Union. There was controversy, however, on how to go about rebuilding the nation. Abraham Lincoln
proposed a lenient plan. After he was assassinated, Andrew Johnson proposed a very similar plan. The
Radical Republicans, a group of legislators that were in favor of freedmen s rights, were opposed to
both plans under Presidential Reconstruction . They initiated Congressional Reconstruction . Because
of the conflicting views, there was little cooperation between the Executive and Legislative branches.
This lead to many unsuccessful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Johnson stated that the seven remaining states would be admitted if: they withdrew its secession,
swore allegiance to Union, anul Confederate was debts, and ratify the 13th Amendment, which
abolished slavery. The only main difference being that Johnson did not want high ranking
Confederates and wealthy Southern landowners to take the oath needed to vote. The Radical
Republicans were infuriated by Johnson s Plan because it failed to effectively help former slaves.
They wanted a plan stricter on the punishment of the Southerners, and one that addressed the land,
voting, and protection under the law of slaves. This is why when Johnson pardoned all Southerners the
Radicals refused to admit the Southern representatives back into Congress. The Radical Republicans,
and the rest of Congress, were the ones who passed most of the bills for Reconstruction, because of
their ability to override the president with their majority. They expanded the Freedmen s Bureau,
which did show some progress in the helping of former slaves and poor white men. The Freedmen s
Bureau set up hospitals, schools, and also gave out supplies. This achieved the enablement of former
slaves having the right to free education. Later on, however, the Freedmen s Bureau became
neglected, and was often forgotten or overlooked. The Freedmen s Bureau is accurately described in
this following statement, This auspicious beginning belied the great disappointments that lay ahead,

The Motif In Rhodopis And The Egyptian Cinderella Story
Throughout the world, there are hundreds of Cinderella stories from many different cultures on Earth.
Each Cinderella story around the world connects to the culture it originates in, based on their political,
economical, and religious beliefs, as well as their location and their achievements, like the Cinderella
story from France, and Rhodopis (the Egyptian Cinderella story). Furthermore, according to the
Egyptian (actually Greek) Rhodopis and the French Cinderella, both are similar in a way where the
motif damsel in distress , reveals the culture it originates from through the social necessity of social
classes.
In this case, the French Cinderella damsel in distress motif reveals that the story originated in France.
The damsel in distress ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The damsel in distress in the Egyptian Cinderella story is a young woman who is a slave to a rich
master. Rhodopis is always being made fun of and forced to do all the hard work of her fellow servant
girls, just because she is different and beautiful. I know this, because the story claims that, They would
tease her and make fun of her, . They made sure that she did all the work, like, washing clothes,
weeding the garden, and making their food for them, par. 2. This punishment is unfair for Rhodopis,
which shows the damsel in distress motif in the Egyptian story as well. Rhodopis got captured by
pirates, and sold as a slave, according to the story. This was very common in Ancient Egypt, because
there was a need for somebody to do the housekeeping work for rich people who had government
posts and couldn t do the work. All of the wealth in Egypt came from the crops that slaves/farmers
would grow to make money, which was given to the nobles to distribute to the people and give to the
Pharaoh. Without the slaves, there would be no crops, and without crops, there would be no money.
Because of this, the author of Rhodopis altered the story to make the damsel in distress motif fit in
with the Egyptian social necessity of

Worlds Beyond The Solar System
When we think of planets we do not often consider planets outside the friendly neighborhood of our
Solar System. Our universe is constantly expanding with billions of galaxies inside of it, and to think
all these galaxies hold nothing but stars is preposterous. If the planets in the Milky Way revolve
around the Sun, there must be other celestial bodies revolving around stars elsewhere in space.
Extrasolar planets, commonly called exoplanets, are planets that orbit stars outside the Solar System,
but what makes such exoplanets actual planets and not just free floating objects moving through
space? These celestial bodies must follow three requirements to be classified as planets, stated by the
International Astronomical Union (IAU) regarding the solar system, a planet must: orbit a star, have
enough mass so that the star s gravity pulls it into an elliptical orbit, and it must be gravitationally
dominant, so that no other bodies of similar size hold a gravitational influence besides the planet s
own satellites.
Now having known of exoplanets, what are they? How many are there? Say approximately one star
holds one exoplanet in its orbit, then multiply this by 300 billion stars per galaxy, and then multiply
this by the amount of galaxies in our universe; this is the expanse of the exoplanets we are dealing
with. The first discovery of a planet outside the

Using ethos pathos and logos in modern film
English 102 For this assignment, I ve chosen to analyze the movie, Gone Girl and television show,
The Office. Gone Girl, a movie still in theaters, stars Neil Patrick Harris and Ben Affleck and is based
off a 2012 book. The book, written by Gillian Flynn, has since been a New York Times Best Seller.
The Office was a television show spanning from 2005 2013 and earned multiple awards. Both the
book and movie are extremely graphic in nature, so the target audience is geared more towards college
students and beyond. I know this simply by the plot and R rating. The story depicts Nick and Amy
Dunne and their difficult marriage. Nick, played by Affleck, comes home from work one morning to
see his living room glass table shattered, blood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Amy then seduces her former over, slits his throat, and heads back home with Nick. Amy claims she
was raped every day by Desi and killing was the only way out. But knowing the real truth, Nick wants
to leave Amy but is unable to after discovering that Amy is indeed pregnant. Without telling her
husband, she went to sperm bank having used sperm Nick stored. He reacts violently, but decides to
stay with Amy for the sake of the child. The Office has a wide range audience, because unlike Good
Girl, it s not a show graphic in nature. It s a funny show, about the struggles of working at a failing
paper company. Perhaps this show is suited for those in high school and older. I miss watching this
show with my parents, because they enjoyed it as much as I did. Like Good Girl, this show utilizes
ethos, pathos and logos. A good example of logos would be the relationship between two co workers,
Dwight Schrute and Jim Halpert. Dwight, a salesman, wears glasses, parts his hair and wears a
mustard colored short sleeve dress shirt and tie to work every day. When he s not working, he enjoys
growing beats on his 42 acre beat farm with his cousin and watching Battlestar Galactica. To put it
lightly, Dwight is a complete nerd. But Jim, on the other hand, is the king of the office. Jim flirts with
his female coworkers, enjoys playing sports, complains about his job and dates the best looking
women.

Owen Mclean Research Paper
Above all else, people are defined by their essential identity, an identity which for Owen McLean
revolves around four qualities: curiosity, creativity, introspection, and innovation. Forming the
backbone for Owen s decisions, these qualities shine through in his widespread hobbies, creative
interests, extracurriculars, and contributions to the community. Through these interests, his most
admirable moments emerge and his personality unfolds. Owen s natural curiosity often seems to lead
him down a variety of avenues, often leading to some unexpected combinations. For instance, he has
an affinity for style and designer fashion but also expresses interest for hands on work. He presented
his senior project, a 1976 Camaro built by him and his father in their family garage, in Acne jeans and
Rick Owens sneakers. These seemingly juxtaposed interests are just the tip of the iceberg, as Owen
seeks to involve himself in as many disciplines as he finds interesting. Alway open for a new
opportunity for expression, Owen s creative side extends beyond the norm set by his peers. Midway
through 11th grade, he formed an experimental music group with two friends, quickly developing a

Neuroscience Background
Lifelong bilingualism has been associated with enhanced cognition. Scientists suggest that the
bilingual experience is closely related to neurological variations observed in brain anatomy and
function of bilinguals versus monolinguals. For instance, research conducted by Olsen et al. (2015)
investigated the structural brain differences of lifelong bilingualism. Given the importance of the
frontal and temporal lobes in executive and language functions, they hypothesized that bilinguals
would exhibit greater volume of these cortical areas. The researchers discovered that bilinguals had
more white matter in frontal lobe regions, which emphasizes the importance of preserved white matter
in executive function. Following immersion in a second language, young adults also demonstrated
increases in grey matter in the inferior frontal gyrus and anterior temporal lobe (Stein et al., 2012).

General Principle Of Suspension System In Motorcycles
CHAPTER 1
1.1 Introduction:
A suspension system is crucial mechanical device, used in motorcycles to reduce shock impulse. The
suspension system is used in motorcycles to provide the rider with smooth comfortable ride by
absorbing bumps and imperfections in the road. The suspension system also absorbs the load during
brake application and makes turning of vehicle easier.
There are three main factors in a motorcycle s suspension:
1. Springs
2. Dampers
3. Sprung and Unsprung Mass
1.2 General Principle of Suspension in Motorcycle:
The main principle of a motorcycle suspension system is to reduce the stresses and strains that would
be otherwise transmitted to the rider and also the majority of the motorcycle.

1.4.1 Front Suspension
Following are the most common front suspensions are:
1.4.1.1 Telescopic forks
This is the most commonly used front suspension system used in motorcycles today.
It is simple in design and relatively cheap for manufacturing and assembling.
The disadvantage of this suspension system is that: as it works through its limits of movement, the
effective wheelbase of the motorbike continually changes.
1.4.1.2 Saxon Motodd Suspension
This type of suspension system has a wishbone which mounts on to the frame and supports the
monoshock unit.
This relives the forks of any braking forces and suspension forces, where the trail angle and rake angle
increases during braking instead of decreasing as with in the case of the telescopic forks.
1.4.1.3 Hossack/Fior Suspension
This system separates the suspension from steering forces, developed by Norman Hossack. It has been

What is the connection between the oedipal complex and Gatsby s behavior towards Daisy.

The jealous child is Gatsby, the mother is Daisy and Tom is the rival father .
Gatsby envies the wealth of his parents and so becomes infatuated with Daisy.

Yes
Daisy clearly adds a purpose to Gatsby s life.
He proves his commitment by waiting five years and by choosing to take the blame for the accident.
How does race (in the essay s sense) prevent Gatsby from accomplishing the American Dream?
One s race is a big part of one s identity
In order to live the dream, Gatsby has to sacrifice his identity and try to recreate a new one (literally).
Even by recreating his identity, he is unable to completely fit in.
Reflection
In his essay, Repetition, race and desire, Adam Leehan provides a very different approach to
understanding Jay Gatsby s character. He uses psychoanalysis to expose various obstacles that prevent
him from achieving his dream. First, he relates Gatsby s obsessive for Daisy to the oedipal complex
and argues he only desires her because he sees her as a symbol of wealth. Then he comments on the
repetition complex (Leehan 4) Gatsby suffers from and suggests that because he has such an idealised
view of the past, he will never be able to enjoy the present. Finally, he adds that Gatsby s attempt to fit
in was doomed to failure in because of his ambiguous racial

Double Standard Of Masculinity In Gender Role...
Masculinity is a topic that has been debated in our society extensively, through research as well as in
informal settings. Many wonder what it means to be masculine, and if we can really assign a definition
to such a subjective term. After all, shouldn t one s own perception be the determinant of what
constitutes masculinity? This self construction would be the ideal in our society, but unfortunately, it
represents a false belief. Masculinity has certain characteristics assigned to it by our culture.
In this paper I will explore the many facets of masculinity and demonstrate how certain beliefs
pertaining to it are perpetuated in our society. I will also uncover many of the contradictions between
society s assigned definition of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The violence boy s witness on television further legitimates this belief.
Katz explains that advertising imagery equates masculinity with violence. For boys this means
aggression is instrumental in that it enables them to establish their masculinity (Katz 1995). Lee
Bowker researched the influence advertisements have on youth. He asserts that toy advertisements
featuring only boys depict aggressive behavior. Strangely, the aggressive behavior generally results in
positive consequences more often than negative. Bowker also looked at commercials with boys that
contain references to domination.
The results of all the commercials indicate that 68.6% of the commercials positioned toward boys
contain incidents of verbal and physical aggression. There was no cross amp;#64979;gender display of
aggressive behavior. Interestingly, not one single sex commercial featuring girls shows any act of
aggression (Bowker 1998). This research helps explain that it is not just the reinforcement of close
caretakers to the child that legitimate masculinity but society as a whole (using the television as a
symbol of society and it s desires).Another example of how this can be reinforced even by women
who may or may not be trying to promulgate such a belief is with an experience I had growing
up:When I would get a cut or a bruise, I would muster up all the strength I had to not cry. I feared that

Climate Change Is An Environmental And Business Issue
Climate change is an environmental and business issue that has gained more and more attention from
society nowadays. The meaning of it seems to be not as easy as its name indicates which is merely a
difference in climate. NASA (2011) reports, Climate change, therefore, is a change in the typical or
average weather of a region or city... Climate change is also a change in Earth s overall climate. This
could be a change in Earth s average temperature, for example. Therefore, climate change in our world
has various effects in our life, which, for example, like extreme weather, global warming, higher sea
level and etc., do really affect our daily life and production process. Understanding what the climate
change is, and why these changes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Business plays a vitally important role in this issue because it has been a major contributor to carbon
in the atmosphere. Though climate change could be caused by thousands of reasons, like natural
factors, however, scientists think that the recent phenomenon of global warming can t be explained by
nature alone. Most scientists say it s very likely that most of the warming since the mid 1900s is due to
the burning of coal, oil and gas...This burning adds heat trapping gases, like carbon dioxide, into the
air. These gases are called greenhouse gases (NASA, 2011). The industrial production which needs
tons of fuels and other raw materials burned is an enormous source of greenhouse gases which might
be the most core factor of causing climate change.
Business is also influenced by climate change in return which is changing the landscape of business.
Businesses that depend on water, like skiing industry, bottled spring water industry, the oil industry
and etc., are affected by climate change because these industries need a constant and steady supply of
water including different forms, for instance, snow. Climate is an essential resource for tourism, and
especially for the beach, nature, and winter sport tourism segments. Changing climate and weather

Stability In Somalia
Abstract
This paper is about the humanitarian mission in Somalia that turned into an effort to rebuild a nation.
It explains how the U.S. military initially entered to assist with the humanitarian efforts but the scope
of the mission changed when United Nations personnel were killed. It also focuses on why the United
States military went after the leader of the Habr Gidr clan, Muhammad Farah Aidid, who was
responsible for the deaths and killings that occurred during the humanitarian mission. The United Task
Force was developed allowing the United States to finally capture and arrest, Muhammad Farah Aidid,
which is explained in Black Hawk Down.

The Theory Of Nursing Care
Nursing care through theory has continual made changes to provide the best care for patients across
the spectrum. From nursing models, to concepts, to evidence based practices that have stemmed from
theories, nursing care advances have come a long way. Theories have been the fundaments of nursing
to help nurses provide efficient care through structure , unity , assessing, planning, and implementing

centered care in helping decrease infections in cancer who have central lines that developed

There have been many advances in oncology care; unfortunately infections from healthcare settings

treatment via central lines. As healthcare providers, preventing infection with patients who develop
chemotherapy induced neutropenia can significantly decrease mortality and morbidity for patients

in educating other healthcare providers, patients and family members, on chemotherapy side effect

The David Milgaard Trial
The justice system is best known as a pursuit for the truth. It is managed by humans so, it is inevitable
not to make errors such as ones that will lead an innocent to be wrongfully convicted. Such a scenario
is the David Milgaard case where he supposedly raped and murdered a woman named Gail Miller but
really, the foundations of justice were tampered with. The Canadian justice system failed terribly,
dismissed millions of dollars and banished the citizens certainty in the system. Most importantly, this
even diminished 20 years of a man s life. The factors of social impression of discrepancy, the impact
of the media, and the misinterpretation of investigating police and prosecution played a significant
role in the resulting failure of justice ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finally, after over two decades of pain and heartache, David Milgaard walked a free man. David s
mother had fought years and years for her son s innocence. She joined with a lawyer, Mr. Asper who
then reviewed the trial transcripts and concluded the evidence given did not prove the guilt of
Milgaard but the exact opposite, that he was innocent. Dr. James Ferris a forensic pathologist, was
permitted to examine with many of the exhibits present in Milgaard s trial, but because the age and
size of the evidence samples, the results were inconclusive, so could not link David Milgaard to the
murder and therefore proved his innocence. Shortly after, a man named Larry Fisher was caught
fleeing from an attack on a woman and was brought into interrogation, he confessed to multiple brutal
sex attacks in Saskatoon, some of which occurred in Miller s neighbourhood and during the identical
time frame as her murder. But the media did not have knowledge of this and investigators familiar
with each case failed to make the link. It wasn t until 1990 that Joyce Milgaard made the critical
connection and saved her son. After this many people came out, including Milgaard s friends saying
they had forced themselves to believe their testimonies were true when they were actually false. It
took 23 painful years to prove the Canadian justice system had failed not only Milgaard and his
family, but everyone. He is only one of the multiple voices of the wrongfully

This late 20th century has a great literary period, known as post modernist literary movement. Alice
Walker an author/poet is from the postmodernist period. In all her stories, she captivates the different
characteristics this literary movement. In an analysis of Alice Walker s poems Expect Nothing and Be
Nobody s Darling , one can see how the postmodernist elements of paradox and irony are
demonstrated.
Throughout out the postmodern era, authors show paradox in their text. Sources claim, Human beings
can acquire knowledge about natural reality ( Duignan, Brian). Paradox seems to indicate that
postmodernist reading sometimes leads to self contradictory and logical reading. Poems/ short stories

When talking about postmodernism, this source states, Parody, irony, and narrative instability often
inform the tone (AP Test Prep).
Irony is a form of tone. It can often be portrayed as verbal, situational, and dramatic. Authors want to
make sure that the story can be through tone/ attitude. Charetize by the postmodernist period, Alice
Walker uses irony is her text. In the poem, Be Nobody s Darling the speaker claims, Be nobody s
darling; Be an outcast. Qualified to live among your dead ( Be nobody s Darling 26 29). Here, Alice
Walker is referring to thinking for yourself and being an outcast of society. Irony is used to show
readers that you can be a leader instead of a follower.
In an analysis of Alice Walker, she successfully demonstrated the elements of paradox and irony in the
postmodernist period. Walker was able to determine paradox in a way that readers have to think about
the self contradictory statements in her poems. In addition, Irony plays out a role in many of her
poems. Whether it s dramatic, verbal, or situational, there s always irony in Walker s text. Alice

Securing Military Gear Essay
Importance of Securing Items The definition of sensitive items is anything that considered classified
or a mission essential item. They range anywhere from protective wear, maps, patrol routes, nods
(night vision goggles) or simply your weapon. The meaning of securing your sensitive items mainly is
maintaining accountability for opsec (operation security), mission success and a soldiers overall
readiness. If an item is lost and the enemy gets his/her hands on that item it could compromise the
mission at hand or give them intelligence on the items we as soldiers use each day. Using habits and

money wise by losing a grand or more easily right on the spot. And after that you can possibly do jail

You might even get an article fifteen after all that or maybe when you hate to pay for the lost sensitive

protection from you if your needed, which in turn the platoon suffers from one person not being able

Sleepy Hollow Film Review Essay
Sleepy Hollow film Review
Blood and murder usually go down a treat for the people who love gore but this is not the case in the
movie Sleepy Hollow . Repetition is the key to an ultimately predictable film. Just as in any other film
we see a substance with a resemblance to blood fall onto a piece of paper. This tells our minds the
movie will have elements of horror. Then two hands, male and female, clasp. A headless horseman
then appears decapitating an innocent man on the run in the woods. This all sets the rest of the film as
a romantic horror. There is still one element that is left to be seen but not to worry. While the ghoulish
headless horseman is out decapitation people Ichabod Crane, a detective from New York, is having a

Only to their disappointment it is only candle wax. Also the black and white faces of the characters
make the people seem cold. This ensures that you do not feel anything for the characters even if one of
them was brutally decapitated. Another problem I had with this movie was setting. The Nightmare
before Christmas , The Corpse Bride , Ed Wood , Sleepy Hollow , and Planet of the Apes are all
movies directed by Tim Burton. They are all set mostly in the woods and are all mostly seen as creepy
horror movies. In Sleepy Hollow Tim Burton again uses ideas from his old movies to try and pin point
the audiences needs. Only this backfires and makes his movie seem repetitive and very ordinary. You
start to predict what will happen as soon as you have seen the headless horseman appear time and time
again from the tacky fog that surrounds the woods.
Camera Shots also make the movie repetitive and tacky. When the director wants you to feel fear for
the character he will use a point of view shot. So when the headless horseman is crossing the bridge to
fight Ichabod Crane we see him: a tall, dark figure walking towards us. Yet, we cannot see Ichabod
Crane s face. How do we know that Ichabod Crane isn t laughing at the cheap special effects? A big
close up at the beginning of a substance which resembles blood falling on a piece of paper is actually
hiding the fact that the so called blood came from a candle and

An Analysis Of Seamus Heaney s Mid-Term Break
For most students, a break in school signifies the end of classes for the term and a well deserved
vacation after a week of intense finals. For others, it is an opportunity to return home to the comfort of
family and friends. Yet other students take advantage of the opportunity to earn some money.
However, it can also be a time of change. Seamus Heaney s Mid Term Break brilliantly depicts the
feeling of loss by using irony, imagery, time and symbolism to detail the timing of events when a
tragedy occurs in his family.
Heaney first uses irony in the title giving readers the sense that the poem will be about the exciting
and fun times of a school break. The word mid term references a point in time as Heaney begins to
describe the time line of events of a student when a personal tragedy occurs back home. Another
reference to time is the word break used here to signify that something has come to an end.
Heaney writes the poem in a chronological order to show how he dealt with the emotional aspect of
death as a student. The poem begins with I sat all morning in the college sick bay (l. 1) to establish the
starting time and provides the approximate age (time) of the student. The use of the word sick is a clue
that the break is not a typical ending to the school term. When someone goes to the nurse s office
during school, it is usually because they are sick. Heaney first uses symbolism with the careful choice
of the words Counting bells knelling classes to

A Look at Ethical Perspectives Essay example
A Look at Ethical Perspectives While it would be nice to think that it is easy to make decisions and all
come to the same conclusion, this is not always the case. Unfortunately, even regarding ethical
decisions where you may think a right and wrong way exist may not be easy to determine. Since
everyone has different backgrounds and therefore, different perspectives, we may not agree on what
the best course of action is to take in a difficult decision. While I believe that character is the most
important, someone else may think that as long as the majority is satisfied that their decision is best.
An exercise created by the Williams Institute for Ethics and Management looks at four different
perspectives which are referred to using ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ultimately the boss found someone else to lie to the customer, but when he needed to find someone to
trust, he would go to Matt. Not every decision is this easy to make, but through study and close
attention to mistakes made by myself and others, I am able to increase the wisdom needed to give a
virtuous answer.
Obligation
The names of the perspectives speak mostly for themselves. Obligation is making sure that the
decision that is made is fair to all and that everyone is treated as equals (Weiss, 2006). The thought is
that we should have a duty to all humanity. This however, presents a challenge when attempting to
make a prompt decision and having to analyze the consequences that it will have on everyone. When
choices are made from this perspective, an individual may not use his or her first thought of what is
right or wrong, but instead what they think the majority of people would identify as being right.
Generally this would be very similar to the character perspective as considering the effect on society
as a whole would be an honest choice; however, this may not always be the case. When I consider
integrity, I think of Godly values which are occasionally distorted by society due to man believing that
he knows what is best.

Literature In Modern British Literature
Literature can embody time, start a revolution, or be used as a coaster under the flattest fizzless cup of
Pepsi. It can tell historical triumphs or new wave gyres, yet in each of these examples, literature has a
single and simple purpose. It is easy to tell time through a book because a reader can simply glance
back out their window to check. It is easy to grab a group of friends read a guidebook on revolution
and paint some signs. A hipster might think it s chic to take an old copy of Peter Rabbit, cut it into a
circle, and proudly place his Pepsi atop. These examples are easy, but again, these forms of Literature
are old. A myth with new literature is that it cannot tell time, rebel, or be cut up as quickly. Modern
literature is confusing, bewildering, wild, and beyond the page. Difficulty is the hand that puts the
books, short stories, or poems down after one may pick them up. Yet, modern British literature can be
especially trying and monstrously influential because the authors did not only challenge their peers or
their government, but the universe. A strategy to challenge the universe must first challenge the reader.
If someone needed a clock, they would be able to find it within May Wedderburn Cannan s Rouen . If
someone wanted to rebel against the world, a reader would be able to discern a reasonable direction in
William Butler Yeats Easter 1916 . If someone needed a coaster, they would be able to find the one
piece of Literature accepting of its new purpose

Robber Barons versus Captains of Industry
Robber Barons vs. Captains of Industry
During the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century, both robber barons and captains of industry were
terms used to place businessmen into a good or bad category. The term robber baron is a
representation of industrialist who used manipulative methods in order to reach enormous quantities of
wealth. Some characteristics of robber barons were: they depleted America of its valuable resources,
forced authority to pass laws that would work in there favor, make opponents in the industry go out of
business, and force laborers to work in hazardous circumstances with little pay. The term captains of
industry meant the exact opposite, these businessmen did positive things in order to reach enormous
quantities of wealth. Some characteristics of captains of industry were: they constructed factories to
make the accessibility of goods rise, increased production, developed markets, gave to charity, and
created more jobs with generous pay. While many historians believe that the industrialist of the 19th
century were captains of industry there are others that would object and say that they were indeed
robber barons. Would you consider the great industrialist of the 19th century to be robber barons or
would you consider them as captains of the industry?
I believe that the industrialist of the 19th century were indeed robber barons. There are many factors
that would justify the fact that these industrialists were robber barons instead of

higher profit potential, little control by the government, less financial audit and defined specification.
There are some disadvantages including risk assumption relates to financial and technical
assumptions. The government would have the advantages of risk shifts to contractor, simplifies budget
process, no responsibility of management and defined work specification. One of the disadvantage for
the government is the prices always contain some contingencies. DUI would use this fixed price
proposal because it would mean the contract expands more than one year and funded with annual

Aging Adults And Substance Abuse
Monica Neumann
Gerontology Fall 2015
As we read through this literature review, we will outline some of the findings from the most recent
research from 2010 2015. The focus is on aging adults and substance abuse in the United States. The
use of alcohol, and prescription medications among this population, also known as the Baby Boomers
is a major concern. One focus will be on the prevalence of substance abuse (alcohol and prescription
use) and the consequences both mentally and physically. Being apart of the aging population and
substance abuse this can lead to misdiagnosing and treating substance abuse among the elderly.
The Baby Boomer population is growing rapidly here in the United Sates and the issues of substance
abuse and misuse among older adults is a concern. The prevalence of substance use among this
population is increasing and the most common substances used are alcohol, prescription medications
and over the counter medications. Continued use of alcohol and prescription drugs, we tend to see a
rise in the number of older adults admitted to the hospital, with that comes higher healthcare costs.
With the growing concern over the physical and mental health effects of substance abuse as the
population of older adults continues to rise, the question is whether there are going to be enough
treatment options available for this age group and if so, what type of treatment is best. With the aging
population growing in the United States, the question is raised

  • 2. Christianity And Paganism In Beowulf The ideas of Christianity and paganism are not usually ones that collide. Nonetheless, the epic poem Beowulf has several references to them both. This can largely be explained by analyzing the people and culture of the period. While the events of the poem take place in modern day Scandinavia, the author and audience are assumed to be residents of England. It was written in approximately 700 A.D., during the Anglo Saxon period. By this time, the Anglo Saxons were already largely converted to Christianity, but there were still echoes of paganism in their society and beliefs. This is presumed to be one of the reasons why Beowulf incorporates this unlikely mix of religions. Although Christianity and paganism are generally thought to have few similarities, Beowulf s unknown author utilizes Christian symbolism, allusions to paganism, and interaction between the two to make Beowulf representative of the period in which it was written. The author of Beowulf is overwhelmingly assumed to be a Christian monk. As a result, the Christian references in the poem are plain to see. The first of these references comes near the beginning of the poem. In lines 6 10, the making of the earth is depicted: ...recalling/ The Almighty making the earth, shaping/ These beautiful plains marked off by oceans,/ Then proudly setting the sun and moon/ To glow across the land and light it... This description mirrors a loose adaptation of God s creation of the world in the first chapter of Genesis, and is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. American Reconstruction after the Civil War Essay Reconstruction was a period of time after the Civil War (1865 1877) that was supposed to be the rebuilding of America. It was also the process used to readmit all the Confederate states back into the Union. There was controversy, however, on how to go about rebuilding the nation. Abraham Lincoln proposed a lenient plan. After he was assassinated, Andrew Johnson proposed a very similar plan. The Radical Republicans, a group of legislators that were in favor of freedmen s rights, were opposed to both plans under Presidential Reconstruction . They initiated Congressional Reconstruction . Because of the conflicting views, there was little cooperation between the Executive and Legislative branches. This lead to many unsuccessful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Johnson stated that the seven remaining states would be admitted if: they withdrew its secession, swore allegiance to Union, anul Confederate was debts, and ratify the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery. The only main difference being that Johnson did not want high ranking Confederates and wealthy Southern landowners to take the oath needed to vote. The Radical Republicans were infuriated by Johnson s Plan because it failed to effectively help former slaves. They wanted a plan stricter on the punishment of the Southerners, and one that addressed the land, voting, and protection under the law of slaves. This is why when Johnson pardoned all Southerners the Radicals refused to admit the Southern representatives back into Congress. The Radical Republicans, and the rest of Congress, were the ones who passed most of the bills for Reconstruction, because of their ability to override the president with their majority. They expanded the Freedmen s Bureau, which did show some progress in the helping of former slaves and poor white men. The Freedmen s Bureau set up hospitals, schools, and also gave out supplies. This achieved the enablement of former slaves having the right to free education. Later on, however, the Freedmen s Bureau became neglected, and was often forgotten or overlooked. The Freedmen s Bureau is accurately described in this following statement, This auspicious beginning belied the great disappointments that lay ahead, (CITE TEXTBOOK). Many of ... Each Cinderella story around the world connects to the culture it originates in, based on their political, economical, and religious beliefs, as well as their location and their achievements, like the Cinderella story from France, and Rhodopis (the Egyptian Cinderella story). Furthermore, according to the Egyptian (actually Greek) Rhodopis and the French Cinderella, both are similar in a way where the motif damsel in distress , reveals the culture it originates from through the social necessity of social classes. In this case, the French Cinderella damsel in distress motif reveals that the story originated in France. The damsel in distress ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The damsel in distress in the Egyptian Cinderella story is a young woman who is a slave to a rich master. Rhodopis is always being made fun of and forced to do all the hard work of her fellow servant girls, just because she is different and beautiful. I know this, because the story claims that, They would tease her and make fun of her, . They made sure that she did all the work, like, washing clothes, weeding the garden, and making their food for them, par. 2. This punishment is unfair for Rhodopis, which shows the damsel in distress motif in the Egyptian story as well. Rhodopis got captured by pirates, and sold as a slave, according to the story. This was very common in Ancient Egypt, because there was a need for somebody to do the housekeeping work for rich people who had government posts and couldn t do the work. All of the wealth in Egypt came from the crops that slaves/farmers would grow to make money, which was given to the nobles to distribute to the people and give to the Pharaoh. Without the slaves, there would be no crops, and without crops, there would be no money. Because of this, the author of Rhodopis altered the story to make the damsel in distress motif fit in with the Egyptian social necessity of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Worlds Beyond The Solar System Worlds Beyond The Solar System Anisa Noor October 21st 2014 SES4U Mr. Humpartzoomian Worlds Beyond The Solar System When we think of planets we do not often consider planets outside the friendly neighborhood of our Solar System. Our universe is constantly expanding with billions of galaxies inside of it, and to think all these galaxies hold nothing but stars is preposterous. If the planets in the Milky Way revolve around the Sun, there must be other celestial bodies revolving around stars elsewhere in space. Extrasolar planets, commonly called exoplanets, are planets that orbit stars outside the Solar System, but what makes such exoplanets actual planets and not just free floating objects moving through space? These celestial bodies must follow three requirements to be classified as planets, stated by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) regarding the solar system, a planet must: orbit a star, have enough mass so that the star s gravity pulls it into an elliptical orbit, and it must be gravitationally dominant, so that no other bodies of similar size hold a gravitational influence besides the planet s own satellites. Now having known of exoplanets, what are they? How many are there? Say approximately one star holds one exoplanet in its orbit, then multiply this by 300 billion stars per galaxy, and then multiply this by the amount of galaxies in our universe; this is the expanse of the exoplanets we are dealing with. The first discovery of a planet outside the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Using ethos pathos and logos in modern film English 102 For this assignment, I ve chosen to analyze the movie, Gone Girl and television show, The Office. Gone Girl, a movie still in theaters, stars Neil Patrick Harris and Ben Affleck and is based off a 2012 book. The book, written by Gillian Flynn, has since been a New York Times Best Seller. The Office was a television show spanning from 2005 2013 and earned multiple awards. Both the book and movie are extremely graphic in nature, so the target audience is geared more towards college students and beyond. I know this simply by the plot and R rating. The story depicts Nick and Amy Dunne and their difficult marriage. Nick, played by Affleck, comes home from work one morning to see his living room glass table shattered, blood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Amy then seduces her former over, slits his throat, and heads back home with Nick. Amy claims she was raped every day by Desi and killing was the only way out. But knowing the real truth, Nick wants to leave Amy but is unable to after discovering that Amy is indeed pregnant. Without telling her husband, she went to sperm bank having used sperm Nick stored. He reacts violently, but decides to stay with Amy for the sake of the child. The Office has a wide range audience, because unlike Good Girl, it s not a show graphic in nature. It s a funny show, about the struggles of working at a failing paper company. Perhaps this show is suited for those in high school and older. I miss watching this show with my parents, because they enjoyed it as much as I did. Like Good Girl, this show utilizes ethos, pathos and logos. A good example of logos would be the relationship between two co workers, Dwight Schrute and Jim Halpert. Dwight, a salesman, wears glasses, parts his hair and wears a mustard colored short sleeve dress shirt and tie to work every day. When he s not working, he enjoys growing beats on his 42 acre beat farm with his cousin and watching Battlestar Galactica. To put it lightly, Dwight is a complete nerd. But Jim, on the other hand, is the king of the office. Jim flirts with his female coworkers, enjoys playing sports, complains about his job and dates the best looking women. ... • 7. Owen Mclean Research Paper Above all else, people are defined by their essential identity, an identity which for Owen McLean revolves around four qualities: curiosity, creativity, introspection, and innovation. Forming the backbone for Owen s decisions, these qualities shine through in his widespread hobbies, creative interests, extracurriculars, and contributions to the community. Through these interests, his most admirable moments emerge and his personality unfolds. Owen s natural curiosity often seems to lead him down a variety of avenues, often leading to some unexpected combinations. For instance, he has an affinity for style and designer fashion but also expresses interest for hands on work. He presented his senior project, a 1976 Camaro built by him and his father in their family garage, in Acne jeans and Rick Owens sneakers. Scientists suggest that the bilingual experience is closely related to neurological variations observed in brain anatomy and function of bilinguals versus monolinguals. For instance, research conducted by Olsen et al. (2015) investigated the structural brain differences of lifelong bilingualism. Given the importance of the frontal and temporal lobes in executive and language functions, they hypothesized that bilinguals would exhibit greater volume of these cortical areas. The researchers discovered that bilinguals had more white matter in frontal lobe regions, which emphasizes the importance of preserved white matter in executive function. Following immersion in a second language, young adults also demonstrated increases in grey matter in the inferior frontal gyrus and anterior temporal lobe (Stein et al., 2012). One s race is a big part of one s identity In order to live the dream, Gatsby has to sacrifice his identity and try to recreate a new one (literally). Even by recreating his identity, he is unable to completely fit in. He uses psychoanalysis to expose various obstacles that prevent him from achieving his dream. First, he relates Gatsby s obsessive for Daisy to the oedipal complex and argues he only desires her because he sees her as a symbol of wealth. Then he comments on the repetition complex (Leehan 4) Gatsby suffers from and suggests that because he has such an idealised view of the past, he will never be able to enjoy the present. • 12. Double Standard Of Masculinity In Gender Role... Masculinity is a topic that has been debated in our society extensively, through research as well as in informal settings. Many wonder what it means to be masculine, and if we can really assign a definition to such a subjective term. After all, shouldn t one s own perception be the determinant of what constitutes masculinity? This self construction would be the ideal in our society, but unfortunately, it represents a false belief. Masculinity has certain characteristics assigned to it by our culture. The violence boy s witness on television further legitimates this belief. Katz explains that advertising imagery equates masculinity with violence. For boys this means aggression is instrumental in that it enables them to establish their masculinity (Katz 1995). Lee Bowker researched the influence advertisements have on youth. He asserts that toy advertisements featuring only boys depict aggressive behavior. Strangely, the aggressive behavior generally results in positive consequences more often than negative. Bowker also looked at commercials with boys that contain references to domination. The results of all the commercials indicate that 68.6% of the commercials positioned toward boys contain incidents of verbal and physical aggression. There was no cross amp;#64979;gender display of aggressive behavior. Interestingly, not one single sex commercial featuring girls shows any act of aggression (Bowker 1998). This research helps explain that it is not just the reinforcement of close caretakers to the child that legitimate masculinity but society as a whole (using the television as a symbol of society and it s desires).Another example of how this can be reinforced even by women who may or may not be trying to promulgate such a belief is with an experience I had growing up:When I would get a cut or a bruise, I would muster up all the strength I had to not cry. These gases are called greenhouse gases (NASA, 2011). It explains how the U.S. military initially entered to assist with the humanitarian efforts but the scope of the mission changed when United Nations personnel were killed. It also focuses on why the United States military went after the leader of the Habr Gidr clan, Muhammad Farah Aidid, who was responsible for the deaths and killings that occurred during the humanitarian mission. The United Task Force was developed allowing the United States to finally capture and arrest, Muhammad Farah Aidid, which is explained in Black Hawk Down. From nursing models, to concepts, to evidence based practices that have stemmed from theories, nursing care advances have come a long way. Theories have been the fundaments of nursing to help nurses provide efficient care through structure , unity , assessing, planning, and implementing interventions (White Zaccagnini, 2014).This paper will discuss how theories have guided patient centered care in helping decrease infections in cancer who have central lines that developed chemotherapy induced neutropenia. There have been many advances in oncology care; unfortunately infections from healthcare settings and the community are a major cause of hospitalizations and death in patients receiving chemotherapy treatment via central lines. As healthcare providers, preventing infection with patients who develop chemotherapy induced neutropenia can significantly decrease mortality and morbidity for patients with cancer (Bush, Davis, Friese, Gillespie, Nirenberg, Rice, 2009). Oncology nurses play a vital role in educating other healthcare providers, patients and family members, on chemotherapy side effect with patients who are neutropenic, especially handling the central line. It is managed by humans so, it is inevitable not to make errors such as ones that will lead an innocent to be wrongfully convicted. Such a scenario is the David Milgaard case where he supposedly raped and murdered a woman named Gail Miller but really, the foundations of justice were tampered with. The Canadian justice system failed terribly, dismissed millions of dollars and banished the citizens certainty in the system. Most importantly, this even diminished 20 years of a man s life. The factors of social impression of discrepancy, the impact of the media, and the misinterpretation of investigating police and prosecution played a significant role in the resulting failure of justice ... She joined with a lawyer, Mr. Asper who then reviewed the trial transcripts and concluded the evidence given did not prove the guilt of Milgaard but the exact opposite, that he was innocent. Dr. James Ferris a forensic pathologist, was permitted to examine with many of the exhibits present in Milgaard s trial, but because the age and size of the evidence samples, the results were inconclusive, so could not link David Milgaard to the murder and therefore proved his innocence. Shortly after, a man named Larry Fisher was caught fleeing from an attack on a woman and was brought into interrogation, he confessed to multiple brutal sex attacks in Saskatoon, some of which occurred in Miller s neighbourhood and during the identical time frame as her murder. But the media did not have knowledge of this and investigators familiar with each case failed to make the link. It wasn t until 1990 that Joyce Milgaard made the critical connection and saved her son. After this many people came out, including Milgaard s friends saying they had forced themselves to believe their testimonies were true when they were actually false. It took 23 painful years to prove the Canadian justice system had failed not only Milgaard and his family, but everyone. He is only one of the multiple voices of the wrongfully ... Repetition is the key to an ultimately predictable film. Just as in any other film we see a substance with a resemblance to blood fall onto a piece of paper. This tells our minds the movie will have elements of horror. Then two hands, male and female, clasp. A headless horseman then appears decapitating an innocent man on the run in the woods. This all sets the rest of the film as a romantic horror. There is still one element that is left to be seen but not to worry. Only to their disappointment it is only candle wax. Also the black and white faces of the characters make the people seem cold. This ensures that you do not feel anything for the characters even if one of them was brutally decapitated. Another problem I had with this movie was setting. The Nightmare before Christmas , The Corpse Bride , Ed Wood , Sleepy Hollow , and Planet of the Apes are all movies directed by Tim Burton. They are all set mostly in the woods and are all mostly seen as creepy horror movies. In Sleepy Hollow Tim Burton again uses ideas from his old movies to try and pin point the audiences needs. Only this backfires and makes his movie seem repetitive and very ordinary. You start to predict what will happen as soon as you have seen the headless horseman appear time and time again from the tacky fog that surrounds the woods. Camera Shots also make the movie repetitive and tacky. When the director wants you to feel fear for the character he will use a point of view shot. So when the headless horseman is crossing the bridge to fight Ichabod Crane we see him: a tall, dark figure walking towards us. Yet, we cannot see Ichabod Crane s face. How do we know that Ichabod Crane isn t laughing at the cheap special effects? • 28. An Analysis Of Seamus Heaney s Mid-Term Break For most students, a break in school signifies the end of classes for the term and a well deserved vacation after a week of intense finals. For others, it is an opportunity to return home to the comfort of family and friends. Yet other students take advantage of the opportunity to earn some money. However, it can also be a time of change. Seamus Heaney s Mid Term Break brilliantly depicts the feeling of loss by using irony, imagery, time and symbolism to detail the timing of events when a tragedy occurs in his family. Heaney first uses irony in the title giving readers the sense that the poem will be about the exciting and fun times of a school break. The word mid term references a point in time as Heaney begins to describe the time line of events of a student when a personal tragedy occurs back home. Another reference to time is the word break used here to signify that something has come to an end. Heaney writes the poem in a chronological order to show how he dealt with the emotional aspect of death as a student. The poem begins with I sat all morning in the college sick bay (l. 1) to establish the starting time and provides the approximate age (time) of the student. The use of the word sick is a clue that the break is not a typical ending to the school term. When someone goes to the nurse s office during school, it is usually because they are sick. Heaney first uses symbolism with the careful choice of the words Counting bells knelling classes to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Unfortunately, even regarding ethical decisions where you may think a right and wrong way exist may not be easy to determine. Since everyone has different backgrounds and therefore, different perspectives, we may not agree on what the best course of action is to take in a difficult decision. Not every decision is this easy to make, but through study and close attention to mistakes made by myself and others, I am able to increase the wisdom needed to give a virtuous answer. Obligation The names of the perspectives speak mostly for themselves. Obligation is making sure that the decision that is made is fair to all and that everyone is treated as equals (Weiss, 2006). The thought is that we should have a duty to all humanity. This however, presents a challenge when attempting to make a prompt decision and having to analyze the consequences that it will have on everyone. When choices are made from this perspective, an individual may not use his or her first thought of what is right or wrong, but instead what they think the majority of people would identify as being right. Generally this would be very similar to the character perspective as considering the effect on society as a whole would be an honest choice; however, this may not always be the case. When I consider integrity, I think of Godly values which are occasionally distorted by society due to man believing that he knows what is best. Results In most business decisions, organizations have to determine if the ends justify the means. This is the correct method most of the time, but may not be acceptable in all ethical decisions. • 30. Literature In Modern British Literature Literature can embody time, start a revolution, or be used as a coaster under the flattest fizzless cup of Pepsi. It can tell historical triumphs or new wave gyres, yet in each of these examples, literature has a single and simple purpose. It is easy to tell time through a book because a reader can simply glance back out their window to check. It is easy to grab a group of friends read a guidebook on revolution and paint some signs. A hipster might think it s chic to take an old copy of Peter Rabbit, cut it into a circle, and proudly place his Pepsi atop. These examples are easy, but again, these forms of Literature are old. A myth with new literature is that it cannot tell time, rebel, or be cut up as quickly. Modern literature is confusing, bewildering, wild, and beyond the page. Difficulty is the hand that puts the books, short stories, or poems down after one may pick them up. Yet, modern British literature can be especially trying and monstrously influential because the authors did not only challenge their peers or their government, but the universe. A strategy to challenge the universe must first challenge the reader. If someone needed a clock, they would be able to find it within May Wedderburn Cannan s Rouen . Robber Barons versus Captains of Industry Robber Barons vs. Captains of Industry During the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century, both robber barons and captains of industry were terms used to place businessmen into a good or bad category. The term robber baron is a representation of industrialist who used manipulative methods in order to reach enormous quantities of wealth. Some characteristics of robber barons were: they depleted America of its valuable resources, forced authority to pass laws that would work in there favor, make opponents in the industry go out of business, and force laborers to work in hazardous circumstances with little pay. The term captains of industry meant the exact opposite, these businessmen did positive things in order to reach enormous quantities of wealth. Some characteristics of captains of industry were: they constructed factories to make the accessibility of goods rise, increased production, developed markets, gave to charity, and created more jobs with generous pay. Aging Adults And Substance Abuse Monica Neumann Gerontology Fall 2015 As we read through this literature review, we will outline some of the findings from the most recent research from 2010 2015. The focus is on aging adults and substance abuse in the United States. The use of alcohol, and prescription medications among this population, also known as the Baby Boomers is a major concern. One focus will be on the prevalence of substance abuse (alcohol and prescription use) and the consequences both mentally and physically. Being apart of the aging population and substance abuse this can lead to misdiagnosing and treating substance abuse among the elderly. The Baby Boomer population is growing rapidly here in the United Sates and the issues of substance abuse and misuse among older adults is a concern. The prevalence of substance use among this population is increasing and the most common substances used are alcohol, prescription medications and over the counter medications.
