CAEL 2015 - Backward (Instructional) Design: Updating ID Toolboxes for Person...Jonathan Mott
Instructional designers (IDs) are routinely called on to design linear, one-size-fits-all learning experiences built around "content" (e.g., textbooks, lectures, etc.). With the growth of personalized, adaptive, and CBE models, IDs need to rethink old habits and acquire new (or dust off old) design tools. In this interactive session, learning leaders, faculty, and IDs will work through the first steps of a "backward" (Wiggins & McTighe) curriculum redesign process. We will provide participants a framework to put adult learner capabilities front and center in their curriculum implementations. This framework also includes several personalization and adaptivity delivery models and modality variables.

Open Badges are used as digital credentials by educators, professional bodies and employers around the world because they provide a better way to recognize learning, especially learning that takes place outside a classroom. They are trustable quality tokens of skills and achievements that can be displayed in e-portfolios and social media.
Open Badges are modular and ”stackable”: they can be linked together into flexible development pathways and can support Competency Based Education and RPL.

Slide Makeover #80: Shifting breakdown of segments totalling 100%Dave Paradi
Often we have to show segments that add to 100% of whatever we are measuring. A stacked column graph is a very common way to show this visually. When the proportions of the segments change over time, we typically use side by side stacked column graphs. This slide makeover shows how using a diverging stacked bar chart can make the changes in two groups of segments much easier for the audience to understand.

When you want to compare the breakdown of a total amount into segments between multiple groups, the temptation is to use two pie charts. Pie charts are the default most presenters turn to when showing the breakdown of an amount into segments. This makeover shows why a stacked bar chart is often better than two pie charts for comparing groups broken down into segments.
How to select and create an effective visual for your business presentationDave Paradi
Why do so many business professionals only use bullet point slides and the standard simple graphs in their PowerPoint presentations? This slide deck explains the four reasons why this is the case for many professionals. It shares an approach that works for people like analysts, accountants, engineers, and technical experts who don’t want to become designers just to create effective presentations.

The eBooks you create have the potential to become an important pillar in your content marketing mix.
Do it right and these high-converting "lead magnets" can continue to work for your content marketing machine long after the average blog post has ran out of steam.
But first, we need to move past the assumption that great eBooks are merely written and start building them with all the right parts!
Using icons is a great way to add visuals to your presentation. There are many ways to get icons online, some are even free. But if you need a specific icon that you can’t find or if you want a special spin to your icon (color, shadow etc) – you can use PowerPoint’s great (and somewhat hidden) “Merge Shapes” commands to create your own icons.
Using these commands you can combine basic shapes into other shapes. You can union and subtract shapes. You can intersect and combine. All while still working natively inside PowerPoint. Once you have created an icon you can change the color, filling and add shadows as needed.
It is just as fun as building with Lego blocks! Well, almost..
This is a guide in 15 steps showing you how you can use these commands to create your own icon - the example we are using is a calendar icon.

Pitching Ideas: How to sell your ideas to othersJeroen van Geel
Learn how to convince others of your UX ideas by understanding them.
We are good in designing usable and engaging products and services. We understand the user's needs and have a toolkit with dozens of deliverables. But for some reason it remains difficult to sell an idea or concept to team members, managers or clients. After this session that problem will be solved!
Selling your ideas and convincing others is one of the most undervalued assets in our field. This ranges from convincing a colleague to use a certain design pattern to selling research to your boss and convincing a client to go for your concept. You can come up with the best ideas in the world, but if it is presented in the wrong way these ideas will die a lonely dead. This is sad, because everybody can learn how to bring a message across. The main thing is that you know what to pay attention to.
In this session I will take you on a journey through the world of presenting ideas. We will move through the heads of clients and your colleagues, learn what their thoughts and needs are. We will move to the core of your idea and into the world of psychology.
Your welcome email (or lack thereof) sets the tone for the email marketing relationship you have with your subscribers—make sure it's sending the right message!

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

4. Why the LEEO?
• Linking Education and Employment Outcomes
• Trained Workforce for continued economic
growth
• Tremendous skill gaps in graduates
– K-12 system
– Post-secondary institutions
5. Middle Skills Needed
(Technical Skills)
…employment opportunities within the next
ten years will include “middle skills
occupations suited for those candidates with
associates degrees” rather than bachelor’s
degrees. These “middle skills” jobs will make
up half of all new jobs in the next decade.
Harvard Graduate School of Education’s report “Pathways to Prosperity”
6. Consider the Problem…..
• How would you define “Middle Skills
Occupations” ?
• What can your district do to address this need?
• What financial impact on your district does this
present?
• What professional development needs of
instructors are identified?
• What monitoring steps are needed to ensure
quality instruction?
7. Why the Need?
• In general, students are graduating with the
technical skills needed for college and career
success.
• However, they are lacking soft skills such as:
– Working collaboratively in teams
– Understanding how to work with unique
personalities, upper management and with VIP’s
such as elected officials.
8. What are the Goals?
• Increase technical skills as a result of student
achieving multiple Industry Certifications
• Increase workplace readiness skills as a result
of students working with business and
industry partners throughout their school
tenure
• Real world experiences as a result if project
based learning in the classroom, with
business mentors

PLANNING ACTIVITY
BK
The LEEO initiative is attempting to fill these gaps, by integrating the “middle skills” such as technical skills and skills such as teamwork, collaboration, self-motivation, customer service, entrepreneurial skills, project management and leadership
BK
Hard skills are not enough.
BK
The LEEO initiative operates with four (4) interconnected pillars that allow our students to gain the needed skill set for employment success
Grade 6 through 20 alignment from the feeder middle school to the appropriate high school and on to post-secondary. This allows the students to experience progression and clear alignment through continuation of a program of study
BK
SOFT SKILLS: Emphasis on employability skills necessary for students to succeed in job/college interviews as well as succeed in team work required for both college and career
BK
INDUSTRY CERTIFICATIONS: Opportunity for students to earn multiple Industry Certifications through the grade 6 through 20 experience.
BK
MENTORSHIP: Industry/Business and post-secondary partners’ involvement in the classroom. These partners work with students on their soft skills, technical skills, as well as advise them on projects (such as the international team project).

In addition to having access to the above mentioned LMS’s, Broward County is rolling out Microsoft 365 to all students and faculty during the 14-15 school year. This will allow students to access the applications such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access from any device, wherever they have internet connectivity. In addition, they will have access to OneDrive, which will give them one terabyte of storage space “in the cloud”. In a blended learning environment, where students will be working on their school curriculum from places other than their classroom, having these tools for them will be a very important component in success.
Chandra
Student field trip experiences to industry partners business and post-secondary institutions are important for students to see where they will be in a few short years. They must visualize how college students will be studying in the post-secondary environment, and how employees work day-to-day in the workplace.
While the details of the project will vary at many of the LEEO schools, the tenants of the student projects remain the same: Working as a team; problem solving; critical thinking; project management and timeline management; navigating international logistics (time zones, holiday schedules, language uniqueness; and long distance communication challenges); and real-world experiences in project development

Through partnering with a coalition of industry advisors, each teacher is connected with 1-2 business and post-secondary partners providing peer industry support directly in the classroom. These partners work with the student teams on projects, as well as assisting the classroom teacher.
