The Lumineers are an American folk rock band based in Denver, Colorado. Formed in 2005, the band is known for hit singles like "Ho Hey" and "Stubborn Love". The music video for their 2016 song "Sleep on the Floor" tells the story of a couple who leave their hometown after a funeral. It shows them buying a car and embarking on an adventure together across unspecified landscapes. Analysis of the video highlights how it uses techniques like "thought beats" to synchronize the visuals and audio, and draws clear connections between the narrative shown and lyrics of the song.

The Lumineers
Band
The Lumineers are an American folk rock/Americana band based in Denver, Colorado.
The founding members are Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites. Schultz and Fraites
began writing and performing together in Ramsey, New Jersey in 2005. Cellist and
vocalist Neyla Pekarek joined the band in 2010. The Lumineers emerged as one of the
most popular folk rock/Americana artists during the revival of those genres and their
growing popularity in the 2010s. The band's stripped back raw sound draws heavily from
artists that influenced Schultz and Fraites such as Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Tom
Petty. They are known for their energetic live shows and several international hit singles
including "Ho Hey”, “Stubborn Love”, “Ophelia” and “Cleopatra”. The band has become
one of the top touring bands in the U.S. and also sells out shows around the world.

4. THE MUSIC VIDEO OUTLINE.
The music video of ‘Sleep on the floor.’ by the Lumineers.
Begins at a funeral and opens with an mid shot of a female
looking distressed making direct eye contact with a male
across the room. We then see them reach each other and
he whispers, “If we don’t get out now, we might never make
it out.” he then leaves to get in a taxi and she follows, music
kicks in as taxi door shuts. They then arrive at a house
where they purchase a car. This becomes the transport for
the duration of the music video and their means of
transport throughout their adventure together.

6. BEHIND THE VIDEO.
The music video to me seems as though it was design to
inspire. A moving/inspirational short film written to
encourage people to do what makes them happy, in this
case this couple presumably weren’t happy where they
were living and were dealing with the loss of a beloved one
which turned out to be the push they needed to leave the
town. “If we don’t get out now, we might never make it
out.” “We weren’t born to drown, so baby come on.” on this
adventure they get married and where ever they ended up
they were always asleep together whether they were on the
floor, bed or sofa.
7. GOODWIN’S THEORY.
According to Goodwin’s theory there are 5 key ways to
analyse a music video.
- Thought beats – Where you ‘see’ the sound.
- Narrative and performance
- The star image
- Relation of visuals to song
- Technical aspects of a music video.
8. THOUGHT BEATS
Throughout the duration of the music video; the structure of both the visuals
and audio beats intentionally a line to create the pattern and rhythm of a
well organised music video. This creates an impressive professional viewing
experience. The technique can be seen in a lot of common music videos due,
it being extremely effective. I would like to attempt to use this technique in
my own music video.
An example of how this has been used in this music video is when the taxi
door shuts at the beginning of the video which becomes the first beat of the
song. The guitar and drums kick in.
It can also be used to set and create pace to the music or the narrative of a
music video, by jumping from different angles/shots or footage of separate
areas and objects, it appears to the audience that more is happening in a
short space of time.
10. NARRATIVE AND PERFORMANCE
From the very beginning of the music video it is both clear and obvious the music video has a strong
correlation to the lyrics, pace and narrative of the song. The song describes a great adventure away from
their home town where it seems they have lived the entirety of their lives so far. Because of this it strongly
influenced the way the music video was filmed.
“Pack yourself a toothbrush dear
Pack yourself a favorite blouse
Take a withdrawal slip
Take all of your savings out
'Cause if we don't leave this town
We might never make it out
I was not born to drown
Baby come on”
In the video you can visually see the couple the song is based on; go and buy themselves new clothes and
a favourite “blouse.”
You can also see the band members play a small performance in the music video for a room full of people
which reinforced Goodwin’s theory.
