- 1. experimental music videos textual analysis
- 2. this music video was directed by Eddie Mandell, Ourros, Aamir Khuller and UMI the artist herself. the meaning behind the lyrics align well with the context of the music video, as she sings to her past lover about if they will remember her,. The video displays a few different romantic couples showing love and affection to each other, indicating that the singer is feeling reminiscent of the times her and her past lover acted in that way. the song is titled "Remember Me", implying she is talking about the past and clinging onto a memory, making the visuals seem as if they were a distant memory or simply UMI observing other people and feeling reflective. the video was either filmed on an old, vintage camera or has been edited to look older, as if it were taken on a polaroid. this matches the theme of past time and reflecting on memories, whilst simultaneously building up to an aesthetic, matching UMI's personal style. the clips are cut on beat, which is visually pleasing and makes chronological sense to the pace of the lyrics. the video depicts a romantic and sorrow atmosphere as the focus is on other couples, not the artist herself and the lyrics indicate she is no longer in a relationship. ‘UMI - Remember Me’
- 4. this music video, created by Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore, is a lot more centred around the artist herself, Kaiit. the visual is filled with friends in a casual park setting, a feeling of friendliness and a bright, bubbly energy is created, especially through the use of angles as the camera circles around the group. this video seems to be just one rolling clip the whole way through, which may be perceived as boring and tedious, however interest is created through the various angles and wide to close up shots. furthermore, because several people are included in the video, the viewer is not solely focused on one face which could be vulnerable to being tiring. the relationship between the song and visual do not particularly pair hand in hand; it is not narrative or deeper than what is shown to the naked eye. however that is what makes the relationship work. both the song and visual are light-hearted and fun, despite the lack of alignment in what the lyrics mean and what is portrayed in the video, it seems to work perfectly. ‘Kaiit - OG Luv Kush Pt.2’
- 6. the music video opens with Steve in the gas station whilst his girlfriend sits in the car. this symbolic use of space and placement, portrays a divide between the couple and implies a disconnection - aligning with the meaning behind the song. his girlfriend then disappears out of the car, which is strongly indicate that Steve thinks she will leave him. The title of the song "Dark Red", refers to a lipstick colour often worn as a signal of moving on. As the song goes on, Steve continues to sing about his girlfriend. He sees her dark red lipsticks, and fears that something bad, as her leaving him would be, is about to happen. the relationship between the music and visual marry well as it is quite literally matching. the video then cuts to a scene of Steve being trapped in a dark, tight, space with only a lighter, which we later find out to be the boot of the car. building tension through an established storyline, the visual takes a sinister twist when the girlfriend starts pushing him around and then kisses him at the end. this alternated storyline has the same message behind it as the lyrics (a relationship ending) however provides a new perspective and circumstance/ scenario to what you initially hear in the song. ‘Steve Lacy - RYD/DARK RED’
