2. Target audience
• My target audience for my music magazine will be teenagers as during that age, many teens are found to be rebellious and
attempting to discover themselves, and this is symbolic of the rock genre.
• This target audience can easily be appealed to by portraying unusual content and catching their attention with artistic rock
images or celebrities. Teens may go through a rebellious stage, which is symbolistic with rock being a rebellious genre.
• The target audience would range from 16-30 years as older people tend to still listen to rock from the 1980s, where rock was
most prevalent. That era made a lot of famous rock-stars, so there is a large audience around mid 20’s and 30’s.
• To appeal to my target audience, I will be using flat plans with large areas designated to content and text, in contrast to
magazines targeted to younger audiences that would fill up magazines with images or the opposite side of the spectrum,
where older audience focused magazines would leave more open space to keep a professional look. However, I will keep the
magazines appearance to a high standard by making sure the text isn’t too cluttered, is readable and I will follow conventions
of magazines with the flat plan.
• The mast head I will use will be memorable as it is a significant part of the magazine. To appeal to all audiences (according to
my questionnaire), I will be using the “God of War” font. This font connotes rock music and danger. The title used will be a
play on words related to rock music.
• Ages 16-30
3. Music Genre – Rock
• The genre of my music magazine will be rock. I have chosen this because I already
have a wide range of knowledge on this music genre to do with famous bands,
celebrities and representation. Rock is quite versatile as it can be represented in
many different ways, from dangerous to mysterious to extremely loud and full of
attitude. This will help me cater towards my target audience.
• Rock magazines are typically unique and interesting to read and look at. Rock
magazines also seem to be specifically popular within certain groups/ages and so I
can aim to appeal to those groups.
• Rock music connotes anarchy, freedom, danger, darkness etc. For this reason, it is a
good idea to target it mainly towards teens. I have been researching my target
audience through questionnaires
4. Representation
• To accurately represent my music genre I can find and
gather other various rock genre magazines and compare
them with each other to be able to know what style and
layout I think would best suit my target audience. This
will also help me understand the specific conventions
that I must include, and which conventions I can stray
from. Through researching the genre and comparing
magazines, I can precisely depict Rock music throughout
my music magazine.
5. Potential Titles
• There are many various rock magazines with different titles. Some of the most famous magazines
are Classic Rock, Rock sound, Kerrang!, Vive le Rock etc.
• From these titles alone, I can see that each one is unique because the producers want to be
distinguished from other rock magazines. They are all short, yet memorable. The titles that I have
in mind for my magazine are –
• Igneous Gore
• Igneous Whore (18+)
• Rock Fire
• Pebble harmony
• String chaos
• Igneous gore stands out the most as it is a play on words related to rock. Igneous is a type of rock
and the house style/theme of the magazine will be mostly red and orange due to the results from
the questionnaire which relates to gore. Therefore, Igneous gore is a strong contender.
6. Institution
• The magazine will be distributed as hard copies as it will be displayed in
stores and access a large audience.
• It will also be available online to be bought at a lower rate however for
monthly subscriptions as it would save publishing money of the
magazines as well as appeal to my target audience.
• I found through my questionnaire that most of my target audience would
either be in retail or students, so subscription based purchase would be
most affordable to them.
• It is also convenient through the internet as it can be accessed from
home rather than in stores, which makes it more appealing to subscribe.
