Combined Experience of Suffering, Death and Love all at
Once
Peoples personal life experiences usually affect the topic of their work. John Keats
was a famous poet who grew up in an idyllic life until tragedy continuously stroked
until his death at twenty five years old. At eight years old, his father died in a tragic
riding accident. Six years later, his mother died of tuberculosis (TB). In the midst of
his troubles, his teacher strongly encouraged his reading and literacy ambitions.
Living next to an insane asylum, Keats eventually started to develop physical and
emotional problems. Diagnosed with TB, Keats helplessly watched his beloved
brother die from the final stages of the same disease. Furthermore, he was unable to
marry his fiancГ©e, Fanny Brawne. Drawing from his individual experiences,...

In When I Have Fears that I May Cease to be, Keats not only states his fears of an
unfulfilled life but also his longings to be with Fanny. He says:
When I behold, upon the night s starr d face/ Huge cloudy symbols of a high
romance/ And feel that I may never live to trace/ Their shadows, with the magic
hand of chance; / And when I feel, fair creature of an hour! / That I shall never look
upon thee more/ Never have relish in the faery power/ Of unreflecting love; then on
the shore. (5 12) He pretends that the night s spectacular stars and clouds resemble
the indescribable beauty of Fanny and love that he has for her. Keats often uses
imagery and other styles like synaesthesia to write in poetic form the emotions that he
is feeling. Although he cannot be physically with her, he can still use his artistic
talents to articulate his feelings for her.
The early life tragedies of Keats caused him to declare his feelings on the
fleetingness of life, happiness, and beauty. Keats is often known for writing his poetry
in the romantic ode form. Literacy critic Jack Stillinger states why poets use the form:
The poet, unhappy with the real world... attempts to escape into the ideal.
Disappointed..., he returns to the real world. Usually he returns because human
beings cannot live in the ideal or because he has not found what he was seeking. But
the experience changes his understanding of his

Temporary Standpipes Report
You asked the following questions: With regard to temporary standpipes, how
many are required in a building during construction? Does the size of the building
have an impact on the number of temporary standpipes? Does the IFC requirement
in 905.4(6) apply to temporary standpipes or is this only to the final standpipe
locations? In response to your questions we have reviewed NFPA 14, 2013 edition
that you indicated as the applicable standard and the IFC, 2012 edition as the
applicable code. Our informal interpretation is that at least one standpipe shall be
provided for use during construction. The number of usable stairways will determine
the number of temporary standpipes. There are two approaches to providing
temporary standpipes... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Confusion can occur in the application of these requirements since Section 905
refers to Section 3313 and then Section 3313 refers back to Section 905. Thus
differing interpretations can happen for the temporary standpipe service.
Construction sites that have only have one stair access for each floor cannot meet
Section 905 of the IFC can be applied as practically allowed during construction.
The IFC provides guidance regarding these situations in 3313.1. Where required to
have standpipes by Section 905.3.1, not less than one standpipe shall be provided
for use during construction. Such standpipes shall be installed prior to construction
exceeding 40 feet in height above the lowest level of fire department vehicle
access. Such standpipe shall be provided with fire department hose connections at
accessible locations adjacent to usable stairways. Such standpipes shall be extended
as construction progresses to within one floor of the highest point of construction
having secured decking or flooring. If there is only one stair access to the floor,
then only one standpipe can be provided. If there are two or more usable stairways,
then additional standpipes are provided. When a standpipe is installed, the base
Run Lola Run Essay
The quote by composer of the film, Tom Tykwer displays the array of opportunities
throughout the film. As well as, making the film distinctive to attract audience
attention by including boundless likelihoods in the movie. The film Run, Lola Run
by Tom Tykwer and picture Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali whom both
effectively utilise two significant key aspects: Chance and Time.
CHANCE: Chance is continuously displayed throughout the film Run Lola, Run
however, everything is not completely precise or absolute. It is perceived there are
constant complications effecting every moment, which may either allow Lola to
succeed or fail.
TIME: Time is a key aspect throughout this film, the protagonist has a certain time
frame that can either lead to a positive or negative outcome.

In scenes Tykwer uses the technique of fast forward to incorporate the dynamic of
chance. The use of the non diegetic sound of the camera clicking permits the
audience to feel the rush and determination of Lola throughout the film.
Characterisation is obvious in the main character Lola, utilisation of a female
protagonist throughout the film makes the film a post modern film therefore
producing a distinctive movie in the modern society. There is a state where the
audience will begin to realise Lola is not in control and doubts, consequently this
allows her to scream awfully loud and will hopefully change her imagined destiny.
During the casino scene, the diegetic sound of Lola s pitched scream, the camera is
zoomed to her face whilst she is screaming. However the audience will discover
she is playing a critical game of chance, she is screaming for the ball to land on 20
which will therefore determine her outcome of fate. Hence, the audience beings to
feel fearful and apprehensive as her fate will be determined as they continue to wait

Two Poems About City Life by Liz Lochead
Two poems about city life by Liz Lochead
Liz Lochead has written two poems about city life, one being Laundrette which is
set in an area of Bristol which is full of bedsits, meant for students just renting. The
other poem is George Square which is set in the business district in Glasgow. As the
first poem mentioned, Laundrette has a subtle start as it says We sit nebulous in
steam (nebulous meaning hazy or vague). You could almost have a debate on all the
possible places that you sit nebulous in steam . Through the whole of laundrette it
never uses the word laundrette except of course in the title. Quite on the opposite,
George Square starts off straight and plain by saying George Square . This throws
the location to a square in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When saying sitting separate the poet puts sitting and separate on different lines to
emphasise the importance of the words being separate. Straight after that she puts
close together on the same line to say that they re close together.
Both poems have metaphors in, George Square uses incurable as cancer as quite a
shocking metaphor to describe how we can t get rid of flowers and weeds in the city
no matter how hard we try.
Laundrette has a few more metaphors. It has our eyes are riveted to describe how we
just stand or sit and stare intently at the washing machine as if were expecting
something to happen to our clothes. Another metaphor is the dark shoves one man in
which uses personification to show how someone, randomly wandering around comes
into the laundrette to get away from the dark.
A good metaphor is tee shirts skinned from her wriggling son meaning how a
mother had too pull the tee shirts off her son who was probably screaming, shouting
and trying to get away. One metaphor, talking about the same person is she sees a
kaleidoscope saying about how all the multicoloured clothes go whirring around the
washing machine very much like a kaleidoscope.
Half lost, his small possessions swim describes how there is a dour man with
hardly any clothes at all to wash so the washing machine isn t full, creating the
image of his clothes swimming around in all the masses of water looking half lost .
The last metaphor is a rather long one, still
The Roman Colosseum Of Rome
When I ask you to imagine Italy and all the vast architecture, what do picture? I am
going to assume you would picture colosseums. The piece of art I chose to research
was the granddaddy of them all, the Roman Colosseum. This is potentially the most
famous monument to survive the classical period. Today, the Colosseumis one of
Rome s most popular tourist attractions, attracting millions of visitors every year.
This massive amphitheater is located in the center of Rome, Italy. During ancient
roman times these massive amphitheaters were commonly placed around cities.
Eventually there were well over 250 amphitheaters in the Roman empire(Hopkins).
However, no other amphitheater competes in size. What sparked the want to build
such a massive amphitheater? Why is this so important? Years prior to the
construction of the Colosseum, Rome was dealing with a massive civil war which
destroyed the city. At the time of construction, Rome s emperor was Vespasian s
and his decision to build the Colosseum on the site of Nero s lake can be seen as a
gesture of returning a part of the city to the people which emperor Nero had
appropriated for his own use (Roman Colosseum History). However, Vespasian
never saw the completion of his Colosseum due to his untimely death. His son, Titus
would go on to open the Colosseum to the public in AD 80. The Colosseum
remained in service for 450 years. The Colosseum is also known as The Flavian
Amphitheatre(Roman). The Colosseum had seating for

Weakened by four long years of war the tsarist regime collapsed and a Provisional
Government was set up to maintain control. In October of 1917 the Bolsheviks
overthrew the provisional government and took over Moscow. Then in 1918 the
Treaty of Brest Litovsk made Russia give up large tracts of land to lots of countries.
Then a civil war erupted between Bolsheviks, Reds, and anti Bolsheviks, Whites. In
northern Russia, British, French, and U.S troops are capturing cities, as well as in
the Russian Far East. Then Russia declares a policy of war communism with the
state taking control of the whole economy causing millions of peasants to starve to
death because the army confiscates grain for it own needs. Lenin proposes New
Economic Policy which partially returns the market economy and provides a period
of stability. A union treaty joins Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and the Transcaucasia into
the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union adopts a constitution based on dictatorship of the
working class and the public ownership of land and the means of production. When
Lenin dies, Joseph Stalin takes over. Stalin takes the situation of the Soviet Union
and uses it to make himself in absolute control of the country. Joseph Stalin becomes
a Totalitarian dictator by maneuvering to establish a powerful place in the party. By
1901, Stalin was a member in the Social Democratic Party. Then it split into two
separate parties. Stalin supported the more
The Tempest Persuasive Essay
The Tempest (Men From Monsters) In the play The Tempest written by William
Shakespeare, a most prominent theme is the idea of separating men from monsters,
skillfully shown by Shakespeare in the antagonist Caliban, son of the witch Sycorax.
Caliban, a character perceived to be a monster, serves Prospero unwillingly, but only
to save his own life.
Why should Caliban be treated differently? Shakespeare forces the reader to ask.
Caliban is described as a monster by Prospero and Trinculo, but Caliban seems more
like a deformed human. Shakespeare writes Caliban as an evil monster with a bad
temper, but honestly, Caliban is just an abused figure of ridicule. Shakespeare writes
(voiced by Prospero) What ho! Slave! Caliban! Thou earth, thou! Speak. These
hurtful and demeaning words were spoken before Caliban had even said anything.

chores, as told by Prospero, Go, sirrah to my cell. Take with you your companions.
As you look to have my pardon, trim it handsomely. Caliban had done some poor
things, but only because all he had known in life was violence, abuse, and hate.
Prospero takes no pity on him, and sends him to clean his
How to Plan the Perfect Party Essay

How to Plan the Perfect Party When you decide to have a party, you must realize
that the people you invite are there to have a good time. If you do not plan the party
correctly and your guests do not enjoy themselves, they may never come back to one
of your get togethers. Take this into consideration when planningthe event even if
making the necessary arrangements becomes time consuming and tedious. No matter
what, remember how important it is to take the time to plan your party step by step.
The steps you must take in order to plan the perfect party are to first identify the

However, if hiring a DJ is out of your price range, resulting to something as simple
as playing music from your computer or iPod will suffice.
The second main step in planning the perfect party is identifying what the theme of
the party is going to be. The theme of the party can vary anywhere from a birthday
party to a costume party. After you have successfully identified the theme for your
party, you will then need to decide who you want to invite. When deciding on who
you would like your guest to be, refer back to your theme. For instance, if you are
planning a birthday party for a five year old, the majority of your guest should be
other children around that age. After that, count how many guests will be attending
the event because this will be important in your next step; revisiting the locations
that you chose. Choosing a location is not only important when calculating your
budget but also when identifying your theme and the amount of guest there will
be. For example, you would not want to plan a baby shower at a bar because that
environment is not suitable for a baby shower. The number of guest is also crucial
to know because you do not want to plan a party at a location that will not provide
enough space for your visitors. Now that you have a theme, guests, and a location,
the next step is to decide what type of decorations to use.
Rome s Good Side And Rome
Pofue Yang Mrs. Killian English 8 Rome s Good Side and Rome s Bad Side When
people hear or see the word Rome , many of them think of the ancient Roman
culture. The Roman culture consists of the Roman Gods, myths, their way of life,
and arts. The surveyors wrote things such as Romans Gods , Jesus , Architecture ,
and Ancient . But the most surprising thing was that barely any of the surveyors
mentioned Rome s dark side; conquership, enslavement of people, forcing other
people to fight for entertainment, and most of all, the struggle for power;. This
research paper is to let all the readers know about Rome s beginning, Rome s
conquership, their culture, and the power struggle. Rome started its development
and conquership ever since the beginning of Rome. What many people do not
know was that Rome was at first a Kingdom, not a Republic or an Empire.Rome
was founded by a man by the name of Romulus in 753 B.C. Romulus made Rome
into a Kingdom, and made himself the first King of Rome. As Rome started out,
Romulus stole women from neighboring countries to populate Rome. As this
happens, Rome was separated between nationalities. Romulus was the King of
Rome from 753 B.C. to 716 B.C. Rome s second king was Numa Pompilius.
Religion was established by Numa which will influence the Romans in war,
economy, and politics. As religion grew, Numa added 2 more months in a year (10
years to 12 years) to assist in Religion rituals. Numa was king from 715 B.C. to 673

Biopure Case Study Essay
The key issue is to determine when Oxyglobin should be introduced to the market
without jeopardizing Hemopure s potential and how it should be marketed.
In addressing the issue, the following were considered: a sensitivity analysis for
potential consumption of different price series, associated revenues and costs, and
gross profit from different distribution methods.
It is recommended that Biopure: 1. Introduce Oxyglobin immediately at a price of
$100 to veterinarians. 2. Have an independent sales force distribute the product to
maximize profits. 3. Advertise Oxyglobin in both veterinarian journals and trade
shows. 4. Establish a successful brand to launch Hemopure in the future. 5.

Only because Oxyglobin and Hemopure are almost identical in physical properties
and appearance, it does not mean that they cannot be priced differently. There are
currently different medical products and services for humans and animals that are
differently priced. Exhibit 8 from the case shows that very few veterinarian
procedures are priced over $100. In contrast, a human blood transfusion is priced
above $1500 without insurance according to the Houston Memorial Hospital.
Hemopure s market consists of people who lose blood in large quantities like in
accidents, gunshots. And and aging population (double of what it is today by 2030)
in need of Red Blood Cells to treat certain conditions like chronic anemia and acute
blood loss. Launching Oxyglobin at a low price would not necessarily create an
unrealistic price expectation for Hemopure because human health care is far more
expensive than animal care. Additionally, the emerging and growing necessity for
blood substitutes will yield great demand in the following years which will translate
to higher selling prices for Biopure, all things equal.
Despite the fact that Baxter International launched the first human blood substitute,
HemAssist (presumably priced between $600 and $800), Baxter International s and
Northfield Laboratories blood substitutes rely on outdated human blood as a source
of hemoglobin which is more
The Machine Stops Essay
At what point will society place a dependence upon technological advancements
rather than the curiosity and interactions of mankind? With the constant acceleration
of improvements within technology and any piece of information readily available
many authors, artists, and individuals question the natural world as each generation
more elaborately explores the innovative approaches towards science and technology.
E.M. Forster s short story, The Machine Stops, is based upon a fear of the
technological revolution, and it introduces the audience to a utopian society facing
multiple forms of isolation as a result of his society reaching complete dependence
upon the technology of the Machine. The society s reliance upon the Machine creates
a divide between those who display an adoration and worship towards the Machine
versus citizens who prevail and fight for their individual freedom. E.M. Forster
illustrates the role he foresees technology to play in the end of human civilization
through an exaggerated vision of the effects that technology leaves on our lives,
which helps the audience to better understand our present day society properly. The
conflicting views that Vashti and Kuno express concerning society s dependence and
devotion towards the Machine emphasizes the change in human communication due
to the advancement and dependence upon technology. Vashti and Kuno s expedition
to the earth s surface accentuates the capability for technology to strip humans away
from their
Man s Search For Meaning By Viktor Frankl
A successful life is a satisfied life. In order to become successful, you must keep a
positive attitude. You must be able to take control of your attitude and flip situations,
turning something bad into a learning experience. Turn any and every given situation
into a situation you can benefit from, rather than dwelling on the fact that things
might not be working out in your favor, or how you imagined. Exercising your
ultimate freedom to controlyour attitude in any situation will lead you to a successful
life. Austrian neurologist, psychiatrist, and Holocaust survivor, Viktor Frankl wrote
the award winning book, Man s Search for Meaning in which he talks about his
experience in a concentration camp located in Auschwitz during World War II. He
describes his psychotherapeutic method that involved identifying a purpose in life to
feel positive as he controlled his attitude during the horrific times and imagined the
outcome. Viktor Frankl demonstrates this idea throughout the book, saying things
such as, When we are no longer able to changea situation, we are challenged to
change ourselves (Frankl 81) which illustrates the idea that when a situation is out of
one s controlto change, he must then change his own perspective on the situation.
Frankl also stated, Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the
human freedoms to choose one s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose
one s own way. (Frankl 69). This quote is an

Magnetar rapidly moved downwards to the securities which they believe were
mispriced. They took a long position on the collateralized debt obligations which
have the highest risk but have the potential of healthy returns in good times. It was
hedged against the less risky layer of the CDO s or same securities. Although, the
risky securities incur losses, hedging against the less risky securities paid more when
the market collapsed.
How could Magnetar have lost money? Using information from the rest of the case,
describe how you think they came to the conclusion that the risk of losing money was
remote. (Hint: Though this is a tough question, the answer has to do with how assets
in the CDO are correlated).
The risk of losing money lies in the correlation with the asset. Magnetar could lose
money if a high correlation exists which would create non diversifiable risk. Thus,
there is a high likelihood that the senior tranches of CDO s get impaired. If Magnetar
contained securities related to the housing market that is not geographically diverse,
then it will have a higher correlation. Thus, the housing

The Main Agents Of Change
This research aims to investigate the response of the main agents of change namely
the educators and administrators in Malaysia, to adopt the Common European
Framework of Reference (CEFR). It specifically focuses on the interaction between
the borrowed language policy and the agents (administrators and educators) at the
tertiary level of education and the ultimate aim is to investigate how the macro level
policy is acted out at micro level. To begin with, this research will examine on how
the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE) has responded to overcome the
insufficient level of English proficiency particularly among graduates in Malaysia.
Next, by drawing on various theoretical resources on borrowed languagepolicy as
well as the concept of governmentality as a theoretical framework of investigation,
this research seeks to explore the extent to which this language policyis embedded
into the practices through the concept of governmentality. In addition, this research
will reveal the direction of localizing the global language policy that has taken place
in the respective institution by the administrators and educators, thus providing a
better understanding on the implementation of the policy. Finally, this research will
also identify the challenges and advantages of the existing language syllabus and
institution s practices in line with the CEFR policy. In this first chapter, I will
describe and introduce the readers to the contextual background of the research which

bit different then the orchestra concert I attended. For one there were fewer

performance was over and there was some singingas well. The beginning of the

impressed by the overall performance. The muscians were not always on the same

National Debt Vs. Federal Deficit
National Debt vs. Federal Deficit
What word begin with d ends with t , and has to deal with the nation s budgets? Well
if you guessed debt, then you are absolutely correct. Or deficit, because both fit the
criteria just fine. Though these words look alike, they are not interchangeable. The
difference between the two is that while the national debt is getting bigger the federal
deficit (as of 2014) is increasingly becoming less. As of last year it was said that the
Obama administration was going to reduce the overall debt of the United States by
$3 trillion over the next 10 years. This, according to my source, is preposterously
wrong. Going in the complete opposite direction, the national debt is expected to rise
by over 8.6 trillion dollars in the coming ten years.
This chart from the Congressional Budget Office shows federal debt levels projected
to rise through 2038.

While the national debt continues to rise at a staggering amount, the federal deficit
slowly rising. The deficit, to my understanding, is the difference between the amount
of money the government is bringing in versus what it spends annually. The incline in
the deficit can be credited to higher government spending and the end of the
recession. Because the deficits are growing, they are causing the national debt to
increase. Meaning that even though they are becoming smaller, they are

A Man For All Seasons, And Elia Kazan s On The
Waterfront
Only fools follow their standard of personal integrity. Discuss.
Values and morals are often instilled in people as they grow up, but the extent to
which one chooses to follow these principles can be greatly swayed by how strong
their sense of personal integrity is. As individuals are exposed to an array of
varying perspectives and multiple values, one s own certainty about the
interpretation or application of a particular principle may lessen, opening up the
possibility of accepting an alternative position. Robert Bolt s play, A Man For All
Seasons , and Elia Kazan s On the Waterfront, we see that integrity is impossible
without a conscience guided by long reflection upon the inner character of justice.
Bolt s ethical protagonist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bolt s lead character is a man of strict moral righteousness; he never once wavered,
which consequently leads to his fall from grace and untimely death. More is not
setting out to be a hero or martyr. He is a lawyer and sees the law as a way to live
peacefully in the world. From his choices, it is evidently clear that More is no
simple common man. He treads the road that only a few mortals would dare travel
down to. His critics see his morality as impractical but for More, his conscience is
the only thing (he) believes to be true . As a man of virtue, More stands alone in the
play. Surrounded by a cast of seemingly weak and basic characters, More s morality
is even more manifest. Such characters as Richard Rich and the Common Man
demonstrate how most normal individuals will be guided by their needs, not their
consciences. Rich is intoxicated with avarice and believes that materialistic items
such as clothes and money will gain him the respect and power that he rightly
deserves . More conversely knows well that respect and admiration cannot be brought
and that the integrity of men is to be measured by conduct and not their satisfaction
of hubris.
It is obvious that More understands the nuance of every political move, as he
mentions what would happen if Wolsey falls. He conveys his competence by his
careful handling of events. Because of his intellectual prowess, More has managed
to keep the people he cares around him safe by using the words of the law in

Rome, Byzantine Empire in 604. The use of stained glass mimicked qualities of both
mosaics and frescos, (this notion will be further explored in the discussion on Abbey
of Saint Denis) thus contributing to the transition into Gothic architecture. Advances
in construction allowed new forms of construction and artistic interpretation.
The Abbey of Saint Denis is considered the first absolute Gothic building. It was
completed in 1144 and is located today in a northern suburb of Paris, once known
as the city of Saint Denis. This basilica was commissioned by Abbot Suger and was
dedicated to Saint Denis the first Bishop of Paris. Abbot Suger had the Abbey of

This representation is a new artistic element, by utilizing stained glass we still have
the power of religious symbolism, now however appearing in a more abstract
manner. The North transept Rose in the Abbey of Saint Denis features the Tree of
Jesse. This image represents the ancestors of Christ and is noted as the original
representation of genealogy. The tree begins with Jesse the father of King David.
The use of this biblical text in the Rose Window symbolizes the importance heritage
during the Medieval period. As a patron I imagine Suger aspiring to be amongst the
genealogy found within Jesse s Tree. The Rose Window itself cascades in vibrant

prepare students for middle school or high school or, in the case of older students, a
job or postsecondary study. Teachers review the IEP with the student s parents, school
administrators, and the student s general education teachers. Teachers work closely
with parents to inform them of their children s progress and suggest techniques to
promote learning outside of school. Special education teachers design and teach
appropriate curricula, assign work geared toward each student s needs and abilities,
and grade papers and homework assignments. They are involved in the student s
behavioral, social, and academic development, helping them develop emotionally and
interact effectively in social situations. Preparing special education students for daily

with career counseling or help them learn life skills, such as balancing a checkbook.
As schools become more inclusive, special education teachers and general education

Trench Warfare Effects
There are lots of disasters that come along with being a part of trench warfare, but the
worst is the psychological issue. There were lots of disastrous facts about trench

The men go into the war looking for adventure and the go in thinking that it would be
great fun, but it is not an adventure, or fun. In one website I looked at it talked about

Interpersonal Communication In Goodfellas
Communication is an important element in video analysis. Ideally, a careful analysis
of the different characters in the scene and their role in enhancing interpersonal
communication is much more important. In consideration of this concept the
underlying principles of interpersonal communication, there is a need to assess its
applicability in the movie; Goodfellas. The three minute scene titled, I m funny how,
I mean funny like I m a clown is a reflection of how self concept, perception, and non

Falling Down Is Failure Research Paper
Mistakes! Whether it is a bad choice in a love partner or lying to a loved one, it s
safe to say that everyone makes mistakes. Beyond doubt it would be impossible not
to. When people slip up and learn from the outcome, those people are taking part in
growing up. Growing up is defined as growing toward physical or mental maturity.
Ways to do that is by taking risks and making mistakes.
In many cultures making mistakes is a bad thing, especially in today s society.
Making a mistake would result in some form of punishment, the society is trying to
assist in the process of helping the individual grow as a person and hopefully restrain
them from making that mistake again. As Henry Petroski, a professor at Duke

this is where someone s decision making and their personality lies. For an example,
Harlow JM first presented the case of Phineas Gage who was accidentally struck
by a pointed iron bar projected by an explosion which inflicted massive damage to
his frontal lobes, apparently destroying the left orbitomedial PFC, who went on to
develop personality changes ( Siddiqui, Chatterjee, Kumar, Siddiqui, Goyal). The
prefrontal cortex holds all of the individual s memories, emotional control, verbal

Summary Of A College Education Is Worth The Cost By

In USA Today essay, Yes, A College Education Is Worth The Costs , writer Rodney
K. Smith begins his essay by painting a very vivid picture of a student in debt, and
angry about his lack of job. Coming from a family that values education, the writer
stands for pursuing knowledge in order to succeed in life. With this believes, the
writer s purpose for this essay is to reassure and reinforce the necessity of educationin
life. Smith hopes he can help push people to go to school, and have a good career
which provides for themselves or even their families. Also, he wants to give them a
better understanding of the importance of an education. Smith uses both logos and
pathos in his essay to help enforce his argument.
By starting his essay with a common situation college students find themselves in,
Smith is able to pull his readers attention, and interest them on what he has to say. He
starts his first argument by pointing out the fact that the higher the diploma or degree,
the higher the income. For instance, 14.9% of those without a high school diploma
(29) will much likely earn four hundred and forty four dollars weekly, while the
1.9% of those with a doctoral degree (29) will earn about a thousand, five hundred
and fifty dollars weekly. Smith is able to appeal to the readers sense of logic because
they can see the statistics and change in income that appears in the essay. Although
there is still the problem of how people view an education as an investment and
Promiscuity In 1001 Arabian Nights
The story of 1001 Arabian Nights is an interesting collection of stories but the
prologue is even more fascinating. The King, Shahryar went on a rampage where
he would marry the daughter of a merchant every night and kill her the next
morning after he had sex with her. You might be thinking, this must be a mad man
but hold your thoughts until after you have heard his reasoning for why he
performed is this gruesome act. Shahryar and his brother Shahzaman were both
kings in two different countries. Shahryar after not seeing his brother for quite
some time, sent his vizier to bid him come visit him. However the night before
Shahzaman leaves he discovered that his wife was having an affair with the cook
of his palace. In his fury and rage he killed both his wife and the cook for

now seeking to take their revenge by hurting as many people as they possibly can.

Macbeth Vs Lady Macbeth
Lady Macbeth is filled evil schemes, and knows how to achieve her goal of getting
her husband into the kingly position. Lady Macbeth is very convincing in her
ideas, and does not leave a lot of space to think otherwise. Macbeth is not left much
choice but to conform himself to his wife s mischievous strategy to get him to
become king. He is very loyal, and wants to remain so to his king even knowing he
would become king if Duncan, the present king, were to die. Lady Macbeth,
however, has other plans for Macbeth, and she soon has him convinced to commit
an act which will change their lives forever. Macbeth and his wife are truly
opposite people, as Macbeth is laid back and easy going, while Lady Macbeth
wants everything planned out and will go onward with plans no matter who they
affect. She truly does make Macbeth a more interesting person through her evil
schemes. I have given suck, and know how tender tis to love the babe that milks
me. I would, while it was smiling in my face, have plucked my nipple from his
boneless gums, and dashed the brains out had so sworn as you have done to this

his intent of killing Duncan while he sleeps. She explains to him that she would be
so courageous as to tear her baby away from her and kill it while it was smiling at
her if she had promised to do so. The fact that Lady Macbeth would be able to

Examples Of A Hero In Graceanne
Graceanne just barely stopped the bus from crashing. The lives of many young
children were on the line, and only one person was brave enough to jump to the
rescue. The only thing this young teen was thinking of was making sure these kids
got home safely. What makes up a hero, and why are they so influential? Graceanne
is an example of a hero: someone who is selfless, undaunted, and dedicated. A
selfless person is one who puts others before himself, more involved in the concerns
of others. A hero is not selfish, but instead cares more about the needs of the people
who cannot save themselves. In the wise words of Mahatma Gandhi, The best way
to find yourself, is to lose yourself in the service of others. As an example for
servicing others, in the titanic, the engineers knew the ship was going under. The
engineers decided that it was better to sacrifice the few rather than the many. They
kept the ship working/afloat for as long as possible, to ensure the survival of the
majority of passengers. None of the engineers made it off that boat alive. What
they did will be remembered for decades, they were born ordinary and died a hero.
Anyone can be a hero, as Bob Riley says, Hard times don t create heroes. It s during
the hard times when the hero within us is revealed. To elaborate, everyone can be a
hero, whereas so few people actually figure out and embrace the hero inside. Heroes
are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary (Gerard Way). An undaunted

Middle Range Nursing Theory Essay
Middle Range Theory by definition is less abstract than a grand theory. It is more
concrete, more usable and closer to practice. Often a middle range theory is
developed from a grand theory. The concepts and relationship in a middle range
theory are directed more at a specific nursing situation than in the preceding types of
theory. Middle range theories are more amenable to testing through research (Fawcett,

Analysis Of Anyone Lived In A Pretty How Town
If humans were to live in a world where only 10 poems were allowed to be read and
studied, ideally, the 10 poems selected would be the most figuratively, structurally,
and mechanically fit of all pieces in history. In my opinion, the 1940 poem Anyone
Lived in a Pretty How Town by E.E. Cummings is one of the most intriguing
poems written and would surely be featured as one of the 10 selected pieces of
reading. Though it features bizarre syntax which, at times, is hard to decipher, the
poem is one that is both touching and personal, while also realistic and cold. There
are many ways in which one can interpret the poem, but each way leaves the reader
with a different mode of viewing the world and perhaps the need to incite change
in themselves. The first stanza begins by introducing one of the main characters
anyone who lives in a pretty how town or, more simply, a city. Cummings then
introduces the symbolism of the bells and the seasons; the bells are not explicitly
defined, one may interpret them as markers of time as they are featured in various
other parts of the poem. Similarly, the seasons are also markers of time, the first
meaning to signify the beginning of Anyone s life or alternatively, the beginning of
the poem. On the fourth line there is heavy alliteration of the d with he sang his didn
t he danced his did ; this adds some rhythm and dynamic to an otherwise confusing
syntax and flow. One way in which this line can be interpreted is that Anyone speaks

Persuasive Essay On The Pledge Of Allegiance
As a daily routine many schools have their students start by standing up, facing the
American flag, and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. This is something that most
students have memorized since kindergarten and in some cases even preschool. The
students recite the pledge every morning and most of them don t know what it
means or aren t really sure why they have to say it. If students don t know what the
purpose or the history behind something is, they generally don t take the matter
seriously, which with The Pledge being a serious matter, students need to know the
history in order to show respect. The Pledge of Allegianceshould be said every
morning by students at schools in the USA and they should be aware of its meaning.
There have been several versions of The Pledge and the one that we currently recite
today was revised back in 1954 when president Eisenhower reacted to the communist
threat. The original version was written by Francis Bellamyin 1892, who had hoped
that countries around the world would recreate their own versions. Now, in most
states reciting The Pledge at school is a state law. The Pledge consist of students
standing up, facing the American flag, placing their right hand over their heart, and
saying the words I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United Statesof America, and
to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty
and justice for all. In other places when The Pledge is being recited its considered
Black Humor in America
Black Humor
One of the most underappreciated and unrecognized forms of comedy is black
humor. Black humor often deals with events that are not often associated with other
forms of comedy, such as war, murder, insanity and death. The main reason that this
form of comedy is so underappreciated is that it requires some thinking on the part
of the audience and many people are not willing to do that. The types of humor that
are popular today do not require much thinking and can be characterized as one
liners. However, black humor has been used as an effective means of satire usually
towards a tragic event. One of the biggest misconceptions about black humor is that it
involves race. Black humor is not a form of African Americanhumor ... Show more

Even though this is such a great model of black comedy, Joseph Heller said that he
was not aware that it would be funny when he wrote it (Catch 22, Computer). In the
story, Catch 22 is a military rule that employs circular logic. An example of this is the
rule that deals with avoiding combat missions:
One may only be excused from flying bombing missions on the grounds of insanity;
one must assert one s insanity to be excused on this basis; one who requests to be
excused is presumably in fear for his life. This is taken to be proof of his sanity, and
he is therefore obliged to continue flying missions; one who is truly insane
presumably would not make the request. He therefore would continue flying
missions, even though as an insane person he could of course be excused from them
simply by asking. (Catch 22, Computer)
The main themes in Heller s novel are paradox and contradiction. He used his novel
as a way to show the absurdity of war and to protest World War II. Another author,
Kurt Vonnegut wrote Slaughterhouse Five in 1969 as an analysis of the human
condition from an uncommon perspective, using time travel as a plot device and the
bombing of Dresden in World War II, which Vonnegut witnessed, as a starting point
(Slaughter, wikipedia). The humor in this book comes from Vonnegut s downplay of
human mortality. He uses the phrase so it goes whenever dying is mentioned. Much of

How Does Huxley s Characters Reflect The Value Of Being
Human
Lauren Wadas
Ms. Petersen, AP Lit
2017
Exile in a Brave New World, As Expressed by Brave New World
Having been a somewhat of an outsider in his life, physically and mentally, Aldous
Huxley used what others thought as his oddities to create complex works. His large
stature and creative individuality is expressed in the characters of his novel, Brave
New World. In crafting such characters as Lenina, John, Linda, Bernard, and
Helmholtz, not to mention the entire world he created in the text itself, Huxley
incorporated some of his humanities into those of his characters. Contrastly, he
removed the same humanities from the society as a whole to seem perfect. This,
the essence and value of being human, is the great meaning of Brave New World.
The presence and lack of human nature in the novel exemplifies the words of
literary theorist Edward Said: Exile is strangely compelling to think about but
terrible to experience. It is the unhealable rift forced between a human being and a
native place, between the self and its true home: its essential sadness can never be
surmounted. Huxley s characters reflect the rift in their jarred reaction to new
environments and lifestyles, as well as the remnant of individuality various characters
maintain in a brave new world.
As humans, we are granted experiences that both enrich and alienate us; bits of our
lives are taken from us but others are added to make us whole. Though, sometimes,
we are taken from the bits of our lives, and have to

Before the company controller, Jim Dietz, decides to include the product recall under
the extraordinary items, he has to determine whether this event is extraordinary or not
because including the recall in the extraordinary item could misinform the investors.
Jim Dietz says that recalls do occur in their industry but they have never had a recall
of this magnitude. The Cranor Corporation s loss from the product recall, even
though significant in amount, does not satisfy both concepts of unusual and
infrequent occurrence. Recalls should be considered as a risk in operating business.
Moreover, recalls can be disguise of management shortfall and affect the company
credibility. The company suffered loss from a recall that resulted from operations.
Consequently, it should be included in continuing operations and reported as a
separate component of continuing operations.
The CEO and the company controller are faced with an ethical dilemma. Their
bonuses are calculated based on the income from continuing operations. A conflict of
interest exists. The decision of the executives is influenced by the possibility of
personal gain. They personally profit from the decision to report the recall as an
extraordinary item. Also, they might be misclassifying the recall expense transaction
as extraordinary in order to improve the results of continuing operations.

Richard Graff s Hidden Intellectualism, By Gerald Graff
To be book smart or street smart, or is it possible to be both? In the reading,
Hidden Intellectualism, by Gerald Graff, a professor at the University of Illinois
Chicago, he touches on the subject of being street smart but not doing too hot in
school. He argues that if students could be as interested in school, and as book smart
as they were street smart, then they would have the opportunity to thrive and excel in
school all while enjoying it, he even goes on to use himself as an example of taking
an anti intellectual and becoming a great intellectual.
Graff goes on the introduce the idea of taking non intellectual topics or objects and
seeing them through academic eyes which would allow students to become engaged

He believes this is to blame for the harsh separation between street smart and book
smart, because although they should both tie in with each other like the way they
function in the real world, they are frowned upon instead of being encouraged in
today s academic setting. Diverse topics, topics that students find that their
interested in, not only limited to bland stereotypical subjects should most
definitely be allowed and highly encouraged in today s academic realm, because
truth be told, not everyone wakes up and says, I am so excited to read Macbeth by
WIlliam Shakespeare and write about it like there s no tomorrow, it s just
uncommon. There are more than 2.1 million students on 114 campuses, in
community colleges in California alone according to the California Community
College Chancellor s Office, and we are all different, but expected to learn the same
way. How does that make any sense? What one students might find interesting, the
other might detest. For example, I enjoyed reading Of Mice and Men by John
Steinbeck whereas my peers despised it. This ties back to what Graff had stated
about students being allowed to write and read texts or subjects which are of their
interest as long as they are viewed through academic eyes. I agree with the idea that
street smarts are more intellectual than book smarts, and that students individual
interests can be more effective than typical learning material. In the text, Graff uses

The Mental Health Treatment Of Australia
In the Mental Health treatment we can distinguish two different approaches to patient
treatment, this is known as models of treatment, firstly we have a medical model, and
secondary we a using person recovery model.
To understanding of recovery in Australia, we have to acknowledge that is heavily
influenced by recovery research and literature from the USA, Canada and New
Zealand
It is suggested that the term recovery has been adopted in Australia from the late
1980s (Lakeman, 2004, p.212; McGrath et al., 2007). It has become popular in mental
health discourse and influences policy directives and service delivery initiatives
(Meehan et al., 2007; Rickwood, 2004; Slade et al., 2008).
Medical model in the mental health mostly concentrates on the treatment of the
physiological aspect of illness, this model is used at the inpatients admissions, by
psychiatrist overall in the clinical /medical settings.
There are many definitions of term Medical Model many of them suggested that it is
a scientifically proven process, concentrates on the treatment of the symptoms, is not
client centred, and medical professionals are in charge of making and presiding with
consumer treatment plan , some professionals also describe the medical model as the
Western approach to illness.
When we talking about mental health recovery we will take under consideration not
only medical model but also the effect of psychotherapy, and person centred model of
recovery.
Recovery in the mental health is
Alternative Energy Sources For Renewable Energy
Renewable energy has become a widely popular topic in society. With the rapid
depletion of fossil fuels, scientist are looking to natural and renewable resources to
create a means to produce sustainable energy. There are many alternative energy
sources that have proven useful in the past couple of years. Some of the alternative
energy sources are not only more useful than others but have proven to be easier to
attain and also prove to create a more substantial amount of energy. Today, the most
widely used form of renewable energyis hydroelectric energy. Making up 20 percent
of global electricity generation, hydroelectric energy is crucial in the production of
electrical power and sustaining the environment.
How It Works
Hydroelectric energy is produced through the use of falling or flowing water. Large
amounts of water usually contained in dams flow through a passageway called a
penstock. In order for the water to fall and flow into a penstock the dam must be built
on a large body of water with a large drop in elevation. After flowing through the
penstock the water intake rushes through and forcefully turns a turbine propeller.
Connected to the turbine propeller is a shaft. The shaft continues out of the water and
connects to a generator and a powerhouse. The generator thus produces electricity
into the powerhouse and ultimately into surrounding homes and buildings in
proximity to the dam. The water then continues to flow into the major body of water
from which it came and
An Examination of How Training and Development

An Examination of how Training and Development Initiatives in an Organization can
Impact on Employees Performance and Work Morale.
Training and Development
Training and development refers to the process to obtain or transfer knowledge,
skills and abilities (KSA) needed to carry out a specific activity or task. It includes
not just factual and explicit KSAs but also incorporates KSAs that are often difficult
to articulate. Training and development will assist employees in the use of new
technologies, and communicate and function better in improvised work systems. In
order to meet the current and future challenges, training and development assumes a
wide range of learning actions, such as training of the employees and knowledge
sharing, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is a greater importance and value attached to employees contributions. In today
s society, employees play a key role towards establishing a successful organizational
performance.
Training and Development has Positive Impacts on Employee s Work Morale
/Motivation
Studies have also found that the success of training and development is directly
related to the degree of employees motivation (Colquitt, LePine and Noe, 2000). This
is because employees motivation/work morale is derived from the training and
development opportunities, which allow them to enhance their skills and move up
the corporate ladder. Employees consider training and development a non monetary
incentive or a form of reward for an employee. (Fischer and Nunn, 1992) In addition,
when employees are selected for training and development programs, it increases
employees post training organizational commitment, self efficacy and training
motivation. Employees tend to feel a higher job satisfaction and empowerment in
their workplace. Thus, the higher the training motivation, the more the employees are
willing to participate in future training and development programs and the better the
employee s work morale/motivation becomes (Tharenou, 2001).
Training and Development has Positive Impacts on Employees Performance
Training and development allows organizations to achieve management objectives,
resolve issues and align cultures to their mission and values. With
Kurt Vonnegut Essay
Kurt Vonnegut Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. is a contemporary American author whose works
have been described by Richard Giannone as comic masks covering the tragic farce
that is our contemporary life (Draper, 3784). Vonnegut s life has had a number of
significant influences on his works. Influences from his personal philosophy, his life
and experiences, and his family are evident elements in his works. Among his comic
masks are three novels: Cat s Cradle, The Sirens of Titan, and God Bless You, Mr.
Rosewater. Throughout these novels, elements such as attitude, detail, narrative
technique, setting, and theme can be viewed with more understanding when related to
certain aspects of his life. These correlations are best examined in terms of each...

. . [an] indifferent universe, [and] regards human existence as unexplainable
(Bookshelf 94). Before the novel even starts, just below the dedication, he declares,
Nothing in this book is true. Live by the foma [harmless untruths] that make you
brave and kind and healthy and happy (Vonnegut, Cradle). Vonnegut carries this
concept all through the story, that the universe is meaningless and each person must
exist for oneself. He even goes to the extent of inventing a religion, Bokononism, with
which humans attempt to make some sense of everything, while realizing that
everything is nonsensical.
Vonnegut s existential philosophy also takes the form of a religion in The Sirens
of Titan. The Church of God the Utterly Indifferent is established, on the principle
that puny man can do nothing at all to help or please God Almighty, and Luck is
not the hand of God (Vonnegut, Sirens, 180). Toward the end of the story, two
existential ideas are developed: first that human life is incomprehensible (in this
case controlled by aliens from another planet for a trivial purpose), and second that
people must make a meaning for life on their own. When one character states, The
worst thing that could possibly happen. . . would be to not be used for anything by
anybody, Vonnegut is suggesting that a good meaning for life might simply be to be
Empowering Management Style
If you are a supervisor in small organizations, encourage a team of empowered,
devoted employees should be on top of your priorities. There is nothing more
essential to the organization s operation than having committed and engaged
manpower. As studies by many researches and practical investigations, employee
engagement is the key driver for efficiency, development, competitive advantages and
labor retention. The actions of immediate supervisor crucially affect their subordinate
s engagement. A supervisor who fails to engage employees by providing their support
and creating a good working relationship environment can lead to talent attrition. The
cost of the effort, timing and resource for hiring new replacement and training new...

In the organization, the effect coworker may have on each other is significant.
Coworker can effect or impact others in both positive and negative forms, as they may
offer help for or be hostile towards each other. Coworker s support can impact
individual effectiveness, job attitude and role perception. Coworker relation can have
significant positive and negative impacts on workers and organizational results. In
this research, we know that the positive support from coworkers is one of key drivers
to employee stress reduction and job engagement promoter. Organization should
concentrate their consideration on seeing how to encourage these relations. This can
be achieved through different means, for instance: developing recognition programs
in both ecards or monetary to encourage employee nomination and recognizing their
coworker supports. building a respect culture and open and friendly working
environment making a solid guidelines that empower coworker support diminishing
rivalry among coworkers by transparent communication and support from leaders.

significance of coworker cooperation is frequently neglected. Be that as it may,
The Importance Of A Career In Mechanical Engineering...
I remember when I was in elementary school taking a trip to a food manufacturer
and seeing the scope and size of big manufacturing plants really changed the way I
viewed my future. It is often said the success of a society in this modern world is
often closely tied to what it produces and the quantity it is able to produce these
products. I have always had a fascination with how things that we rely on everyday
are made. This drove me to decide that I would pursue a career in mechanical
engineeringtechnology because it revolved around the very things I like doing the
most. Mechanical engineeringtechnology is a broad and expansive career field that
can take me many places as will be described further.
A mechanical engineering/technologist applies the principles of engineering for the
creation of useful products or machinery, they also may assist other technical
professionals in designing and manufacturing of engineering ideas before they are
mass produced or further developed (Bureau of labor and statistics, 2015). The
required education for this career according to the bureau of labor and statistics is
that a person is required to have a bachelor s degree in mechanical engineering
technology or a mechanical engineering degree. Often people get confused between a
traditional engineering degree and a engineering/technologist degree, let me explain,
the major difference between a traditional mechanical engineering degree and a
mechanical engineering technology degree is that
The Bell Jar, By Sylvia Plath
Of the two readings we were given to select from for our Midterm Assignment, I
chose to conduct my initial psychosocial and diagnostic assessment on the
character, Esther, from the semi autobiographical novel The Bell Jar , by Sylvia
Plath. The protagonist in the novel is a 19 year old girl from the suburbs of Boston
growing up in the 1950 s who has accepted a summer internship working at a
prominent magazine in New York City. It is made clear from the beginning of the
novel that Esther s move has resulted in a possible adjustment disorder as she
narrates her feelings of sadness, misplacement, and disconnectedness from reality. It
is evident that she is painfully aware of her approaching melancholic depression as
evidenced by her opening statement, I knew something was wrong with me that
summer and later, I felt very still and very empty, the way the eye of a tornado must
feel, moving dully along in the middle of the surrounding hullabaloo (Plath, 1971).
Throughout the novel, Esther holds the wits and self awareness to know something is
or has been stewing within, while simultaneously having a skewed perception of the
world around her. Feelings of helplessness and entrapment are illustrated by the
metaphor Esther has created The bell jarthat suggests she has lost control of herself.
Esther describes the bell jar as a symbolic meaning of the lenses in which she see s
life through; a trapped space where she lives in her own sour air , separated from the
world

  • 3. Combined Experience of Suffering, Death and Love all at Once Peoples personal life experiences usually affect the topic of their work. John Keats was a famous poet who grew up in an idyllic life until tragedy continuously stroked until his death at twenty five years old. At eight years old, his father died in a tragic riding accident. Six years later, his mother died of tuberculosis (TB). In the midst of his troubles, his teacher strongly encouraged his reading and literacy ambitions. Living next to an insane asylum, Keats eventually started to develop physical and emotional problems. Diagnosed with TB, Keats helplessly watched his beloved brother die from the final stages of the same disease. Furthermore, he was unable to marry his fiancГ©e, Fanny Brawne. In When I Have Fears that I May Cease to be, Keats not only states his fears of an unfulfilled life but also his longings to be with Fanny. He says: When I behold, upon the night s starr d face/ Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance/ And feel that I may never live to trace/ Their shadows, with the magic hand of chance; / And when I feel, fair creature of an hour! / That I shall never look upon thee more/ Never have relish in the faery power/ Of unreflecting love; then on the shore. (5 12) He pretends that the night s spectacular stars and clouds resemble the indescribable beauty of Fanny and love that he has for her. Keats often uses imagery and other styles like synaesthesia to write in poetic form the emotions that he is feeling. Although he cannot be physically with her, he can still use his artistic talents to articulate his feelings for her. The early life tragedies of Keats caused him to declare his feelings on the fleetingness of life, happiness, and beauty. Keats is often known for writing his poetry in the romantic ode form. Literacy critic Jack Stillinger states why poets use the form: The poet, unhappy with the real world... attempts to escape into the ideal. Disappointed..., he returns to the real world. Usually he returns because human beings cannot live in the ideal or because he has not found what he was seeking. But the experience changes his understanding of his

  • 5. Temporary Standpipes Report You asked the following questions: With regard to temporary standpipes, how many are required in a building during construction? Does the size of the building have an impact on the number of temporary standpipes? Does the IFC requirement in 905.4(6) apply to temporary standpipes or is this only to the final standpipe locations? In response to your questions we have reviewed NFPA 14, 2013 edition that you indicated as the applicable standard and the IFC, 2012 edition as the applicable code. Our informal interpretation is that at least one standpipe shall be provided for use during construction. The number of usable stairways will determine the number of temporary standpipes. There are two approaches to providing temporary standpipes... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Confusion can occur in the application of these requirements since Section 905 refers to Section 3313 and then Section 3313 refers back to Section 905. Thus differing interpretations can happen for the temporary standpipe service. Construction sites that have only have one stair access for each floor cannot meet Section 905 of the IFC can be applied as practically allowed during construction. The IFC provides guidance regarding these situations in 3313.1. Where required to have standpipes by Section 905.3.1, not less than one standpipe shall be provided for use during construction. Such standpipes shall be installed prior to construction exceeding 40 feet in height above the lowest level of fire department vehicle access. Such standpipe shall be provided with fire department hose connections at accessible locations adjacent to usable stairways. Such standpipes shall be extended as construction progresses to within one floor of the highest point of construction having secured decking or flooring. If there is only one stair access to the floor, then only one standpipe can be provided. If there are two or more usable stairways, then additional standpipes are provided. When a standpipe is installed, the base

Two Poems About City Life by Liz Lochead Two poems about city life by Liz Lochead Liz Lochead has written two poems about city life, one being Laundrette which is set in an area of Bristol which is full of bedsits, meant for students just renting. The other poem is George Square which is set in the business district in Glasgow. As the first poem mentioned, Laundrette has a subtle start as it says We sit nebulous in steam (nebulous meaning hazy or vague). You could almost have a debate on all the possible places that you sit nebulous in steam . Through the whole of laundrette it never uses the word laundrette except of course in the title. Laundrette has a few more metaphors. It has our eyes are riveted to describe how we just stand or sit and stare intently at the washing machine as if were expecting something to happen to our clothes. Another metaphor is the dark shoves one man in which uses personification to show how someone, randomly wandering around comes into the laundrette to get away from the dark. A good metaphor is tee shirts skinned from her wriggling son meaning how a mother had too pull the tee shirts off her son who was probably screaming, shouting and trying to get away. One metaphor, talking about the same person is she sees a kaleidoscope saying about how all the multicoloured clothes go whirring around the washing machine very much like a kaleidoscope. Half lost, his small possessions swim describes how there is a dour man with hardly any clothes at all to wash so the washing machine isn t full, creating the image of his clothes swimming around in all the masses of water looking half lost . The last metaphor is a rather long one, still
  • 8. The Roman Colosseum Of Rome When I ask you to imagine Italy and all the vast architecture, what do picture? I am going to assume you would picture colosseums. The piece of art I chose to research was the granddaddy of them all, the Roman Colosseum. This is potentially the most famous monument to survive the classical period. Today, the Colosseumis one of Rome s most popular tourist attractions, attracting millions of visitors every year. This massive amphitheater is located in the center of Rome, Italy. During ancient roman times these massive amphitheaters were commonly placed around cities. Eventually there were well over 250 amphitheaters in the Roman empire(Hopkins). However, no other amphitheater competes in size. What sparked the want to build such a massive amphitheater? Why is this so important? Years prior to the construction of the Colosseum, Rome was dealing with a massive civil war which destroyed the city. At the time of construction, Rome s emperor was Vespasian s and his decision to build the Colosseum on the site of Nero s lake can be seen as a gesture of returning a part of the city to the people which emperor Nero had appropriated for his own use (Roman Colosseum History). However, Vespasian never saw the completion of his Colosseum due to his untimely death. His son, Titus would go on to open the Colosseum to the public in AD 80. The Colosseum remained in service for 450 years. The Colosseum is also known as The Flavian Amphitheatre(Roman). The Colosseum had seating for

  • 10. The Tempest Persuasive Essay The Tempest (Men From Monsters) In the play The Tempest written by William Shakespeare, a most prominent theme is the idea of separating men from monsters, skillfully shown by Shakespeare in the antagonist Caliban, son of the witch Sycorax. Caliban, a character perceived to be a monster, serves Prospero unwillingly, but only to save his own life. Why should Caliban be treated differently? Shakespeare forces the reader to ask. Caliban is described as a monster by Prospero and Trinculo, but Caliban seems more like a deformed human. Shakespeare writes Caliban as an evil monster with a bad temper, but honestly, Caliban is just an abused figure of ridicule. Shakespeare writes (voiced by Prospero) What ho! Slave! Caliban! The second main step in planning the perfect party is identifying what the theme of the party is going to be. The theme of the party can vary anywhere from a birthday party to a costume party. After you have successfully identified the theme for your party, you will then need to decide who you want to invite. When deciding on who you would like your guest to be, refer back to your theme. For instance, if you are planning a birthday party for a five year old, the majority of your guest should be other children around that age. After that, count how many guests will be attending the event because this will be important in your next step; revisiting the locations that you chose. Choosing a location is not only important when calculating your budget but also when identifying your theme and the amount of guest there will be. For example, you would not want to plan a baby shower at a bar because that environment is not suitable for a baby shower. The number of guest is also crucial to know because you do not want to plan a party at a location that will not provide enough space for your visitors. Now that you have a theme, guests, and a location, the next step is to decide what type of decorations to use.
  • 12. Rome s Good Side And Rome Pofue Yang Mrs. Killian English 8 Rome s Good Side and Rome s Bad Side When people hear or see the word Rome , many of them think of the ancient Roman culture. The Roman culture consists of the Roman Gods, myths, their way of life, and arts. The surveyors wrote things such as Romans Gods , Jesus , Architecture , and Ancient . But the most surprising thing was that barely any of the surveyors mentioned Rome s dark side; conquership, enslavement of people, forcing other people to fight for entertainment, and most of all, the struggle for power;. This research paper is to let all the readers know about Rome s beginning, Rome s conquership, their culture, and the power struggle. Rome started its development and conquership ever since the beginning of Rome. What many people do not know was that Rome was at first a Kingdom, not a Republic or an Empire.Rome was founded by a man by the name of Romulus in 753 B.C. Romulus made Rome into a Kingdom, and made himself the first King of Rome. As Rome started out, Romulus stole women from neighboring countries to populate Rome. As this happens, Rome was separated between nationalities. Romulus was the King of Rome from 753 B.C. to 716 B.C. Rome s second king was Numa Pompilius. Religion was established by Numa which will influence the Romans in war, economy, and politics. As religion grew, Numa added 2 more months in a year (10 years to 12 years) to assist in Religion rituals. Numa was king from 715 B.C. to 673 B.C. Then came the

In addressing the issue, the following were considered: a sensitivity analysis for potential consumption of different price series, associated revenues and costs, and gross profit from different distribution methods. It is recommended that Biopure: 1. Introduce Oxyglobin immediately at a price of $100 to veterinarians. 2. Have an independent sales force distribute the product to maximize profits. 3. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Only because Oxyglobin and Hemopure are almost identical in physical properties and appearance, it does not mean that they cannot be priced differently. There are currently different medical products and services for humans and animals that are differently priced. Exhibit 8 from the case shows that very few veterinarian procedures are priced over $100. In contrast, a human blood transfusion is priced above $1500 without insurance according to the Houston Memorial Hospital. Hemopure s market consists of people who lose blood in large quantities like in accidents, gunshots. And and aging population (double of what it is today by 2030) in need of Red Blood Cells to treat certain conditions like chronic anemia and acute blood loss. Launching Oxyglobin at a low price would not necessarily create an unrealistic price expectation for Hemopure because human health care is far more expensive than animal care. Additionally, the emerging and growing necessity for blood substitutes will yield great demand in the following years which will translate to higher selling prices for Biopure, all things equal. Despite the fact that Baxter International launched the first human blood substitute, HemAssist (presumably priced between $600 and $800), Baxter International s and Northfield Laboratories blood substitutes rely on outdated human blood as a source of hemoglobin which is more
  • 14. The Machine Stops Essay At what point will society place a dependence upon technological advancements rather than the curiosity and interactions of mankind? With the constant acceleration of improvements within technology and any piece of information readily available many authors, artists, and individuals question the natural world as each generation more elaborately explores the innovative approaches towards science and technology. E.M. Forster s short story, The Machine Stops, is based upon a fear of the technological revolution, and it introduces the audience to a utopian society facing multiple forms of isolation as a result of his society reaching complete dependence upon the technology of the Machine. The society s reliance upon the Machine creates a divide between those who display an adoration and worship towards the Machine versus citizens who prevail and fight for their individual freedom. E.M. Forster illustrates the role he foresees technology to play in the end of human civilization through an exaggerated vision of the effects that technology leaves on our lives, which helps the audience to better understand our present day society properly. The conflicting views that Vashti and Kuno express concerning society s dependence and devotion towards the Machine emphasizes the change in human communication due to the advancement and dependence upon technology. Vashti and Kuno s expedition to the earth s surface accentuates the capability for technology to strip humans away from their
  • 15. Man s Search For Meaning By Viktor Frankl A successful life is a satisfied life. In order to become successful, you must keep a positive attitude. You must be able to take control of your attitude and flip situations, turning something bad into a learning experience. Turn any and every given situation into a situation you can benefit from, rather than dwelling on the fact that things might not be working out in your favor, or how you imagined. Exercising your ultimate freedom to controlyour attitude in any situation will lead you to a successful life. Austrian neurologist, psychiatrist, and Holocaust survivor, Viktor Frankl wrote the award winning book, Man s Search for Meaning in which he talks about his experience in a concentration camp located in Auschwitz during World War II. He describes his psychotherapeutic method that involved identifying a purpose in life to feel positive as he controlled his attitude during the horrific times and imagined the outcome. Viktor Frankl demonstrates this idea throughout the book, saying things such as, When we are no longer able to changea situation, we are challenged to change ourselves (Frankl 81) which illustrates the idea that when a situation is out of one s controlto change, he must then change his own perspective on the situation. It was hedged against the less risky layer of the CDO s or same securities. Although, the risky securities incur losses, hedging against the less risky securities paid more when the market collapsed. How could Magnetar have lost money? Using information from the rest of the case, describe how you think they came to the conclusion that the risk of losing money was remote. (Hint: Though this is a tough question, the answer has to do with how assets in the CDO are correlated). The risk of losing money lies in the correlation with the asset. Magnetar could lose money if a high correlation exists which would create non diversifiable risk. Thus, there is a high likelihood that the senior tranches of CDO s get impaired. If Magnetar contained securities related to the housing market that is not geographically diverse, then it will have a higher correlation. Thus, the housing

The Main Agents Of Change This research aims to investigate the response of the main agents of change namely the educators and administrators in Malaysia, to adopt the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). It specifically focuses on the interaction between the borrowed language policy and the agents (administrators and educators) at the tertiary level of education and the ultimate aim is to investigate how the macro level policy is acted out at micro level. To begin with, this research will examine on how the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE) has responded to overcome the insufficient level of English proficiency particularly among graduates in Malaysia. Next, by drawing on various theoretical resources on borrowed languagepolicy as well as the concept of governmentality as a theoretical framework of investigation, this research seeks to explore the extent to which this language policyis embedded into the practices through the concept of governmentality. In addition, this research will reveal the direction of localizing the global language policy that has taken place in the respective institution by the administrators and educators, thus providing a better understanding on the implementation of the policy. Finally, this research will also identify the challenges and advantages of the existing language syllabus and institution s practices in line with the CEFR policy. In this first chapter, I will describe and introduce the readers to the contextual background of the research which

  • 20. National Debt Vs. Federal Deficit National Debt vs. Federal Deficit What word begin with d ends with t , and has to deal with the nation s budgets? Well if you guessed debt, then you are absolutely correct. Or deficit, because both fit the criteria just fine. Though these words look alike, they are not interchangeable. The difference between the two is that while the national debt is getting bigger the federal deficit (as of 2014) is increasingly becoming less. As of last year it was said that the Obama administration was going to reduce the overall debt of the United States by $3 trillion over the next 10 years. This, according to my source, is preposterously wrong. Going in the complete opposite direction, the national debt is expected to rise by over 8.6 trillion dollars in the coming ten years. This chart from the Congressional Budget Office shows federal debt levels projected to rise through 2038. This chart from the Congressional Budget Office shows federal debt levels projected to rise through 2038. While the national debt continues to rise at a staggering amount, the federal deficit slowly rising. The deficit, to my understanding, is the difference between the amount of money the government is bringing in versus what it spends annually. The incline in the deficit can be credited to higher government spending and the end of the recession. Because the deficits are growing, they are causing the national debt to increase. Meaning that even though they are becoming smaller, they are

Values and morals are often instilled in people as they grow up, but the extent to which one chooses to follow these principles can be greatly swayed by how strong their sense of personal integrity is. As individuals are exposed to an array of varying perspectives and multiple values, one s own certainty about the interpretation or application of a particular principle may lessen, opening up the possibility of accepting an alternative position. Robert Bolt s play, A Man For All Seasons , and Elia Kazan s On the Waterfront, we see that integrity is impossible without a conscience guided by long reflection upon the inner character of justice. Bolt s ethical protagonist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bolt s lead character is a man of strict moral righteousness; he never once wavered, which consequently leads to his fall from grace and untimely death. More is not setting out to be a hero or martyr. He is a lawyer and sees the law as a way to live peacefully in the world. From his choices, it is evidently clear that More is no simple common man. He treads the road that only a few mortals would dare travel down to. His critics see his morality as impractical but for More, his conscience is the only thing (he) believes to be true . As a man of virtue, More stands alone in the play. Surrounded by a cast of seemingly weak and basic characters, More s morality is even more manifest. Such characters as Richard Rich and the Common Man demonstrate how most normal individuals will be guided by their needs, not their consciences. Rich is intoxicated with avarice and believes that materialistic items such as clothes and money will gain him the respect and power that he rightly deserves . More conversely knows well that respect and admiration cannot be brought and that the integrity of men is to be measured by conduct and not their satisfaction of hubris. It is obvious that More understands the nuance of every political move, as he mentions what would happen if Wolsey falls. He conveys his competence by his careful handling of events. Because of his intellectual prowess, More has managed to keep the people he cares around him safe by using the words of the law in

Pope Gregory the Great s legacy of rendering biblical text through mosaics and frescos carried on long after his passing which occurred during the Rome, Byzantine Empire in 604. The use of stained glass mimicked qualities of both mosaics and frescos, (this notion will be further explored in the discussion on Abbey of Saint Denis) thus contributing to the transition into Gothic architecture. Advances in construction allowed new forms of construction and artistic interpretation. The Abbey of Saint Denis is considered the first absolute Gothic building. It was completed in 1144 and is located today in a northern suburb of Paris, once known as the city of Saint Denis. This basilica was commissioned by Abbot Suger and was dedicated to Saint Denis the first Bishop of Paris. Coming from a family that values education, the writer stands for pursuing knowledge in order to succeed in life. With this believes, the writer s purpose for this essay is to reassure and reinforce the necessity of educationin life. Smith hopes he can help push people to go to school, and have a good career which provides for themselves or even their families. Also, he wants to give them a better understanding of the importance of an education. Smith uses both logos and pathos in his essay to help enforce his argument. By starting his essay with a common situation college students find themselves in, Smith is able to pull his readers attention, and interest them on what he has to say. He starts his first argument by pointing out the fact that the higher the diploma or degree, the higher the income. For instance, 14.9% of those without a high school diploma (29) will much likely earn four hundred and forty four dollars weekly, while the 1.9% of those with a doctoral degree (29) will earn about a thousand, five hundred and fifty dollars weekly. Graceanne is an example of a hero: someone who is selfless, undaunted, and dedicated. A selfless person is one who puts others before himself, more involved in the concerns of others. A hero is not selfish, but instead cares more about the needs of the people who cannot save themselves. In my opinion, the 1940 poem Anyone Lived in a Pretty How Town by E.E. Cummings is one of the most intriguing poems written and would surely be featured as one of the 10 selected pieces of reading. Though it features bizarre syntax which, at times, is hard to decipher, the poem is one that is both touching and personal, while also realistic and cold. There are many ways in which one can interpret the poem, but each way leaves the reader with a different mode of viewing the world and perhaps the need to incite change in themselves. The first stanza begins by introducing one of the main characters anyone who lives in a pretty how town or, more simply, a city. An example of this is the rule that deals with avoiding combat missions: One may only be excused from flying bombing missions on the grounds of insanity; one must assert one s insanity to be excused on this basis; one who requests to be excused is presumably in fear for his life. This is taken to be proof of his sanity, and he is therefore obliged to continue flying missions; one who is truly insane presumably would not make the request. He therefore would continue flying missions, even though as an insane person he could of course be excused from them simply by asking. (Catch 22, Computer) The main themes in Heller s novel are paradox and contradiction. He used his novel as a way to show the absurdity of war and to protest World War II. Another author, Kurt Vonnegut wrote Slaughterhouse Five in 1969 as an analysis of the human condition from an uncommon perspective, using time travel as a plot device and the bombing of Dresden in World War II, which Vonnegut witnessed, as a starting point (Slaughter, wikipedia). How Does Huxley s Characters Reflect The Value Of Being Human Lauren Wadas Ms. Petersen, AP Lit 2017 Exile in a Brave New World, As Expressed by Brave New World Having been a somewhat of an outsider in his life, physically and mentally, Aldous Huxley used what others thought as his oddities to create complex works. His large stature and creative individuality is expressed in the characters of his novel, Brave New World. In crafting such characters as Lenina, John, Linda, Bernard, and Helmholtz, not to mention the entire world he created in the text itself, Huxley incorporated some of his humanities into those of his characters. Contrastly, he removed the same humanities from the society as a whole to seem perfect. This, the essence and value of being human, is the great meaning of Brave New World. The presence and lack of human nature in the novel exemplifies the words of literary theorist Edward Said: Exile is strangely compelling to think about but terrible to experience. It is the unhealable rift forced between a human being and a native place, between the self and its true home: its essential sadness can never be surmounted. Huxley s characters reflect the rift in their jarred reaction to new environments and lifestyles, as well as the remnant of individuality various characters maintain in a brave new world. As humans, we are granted experiences that both enrich and alienate us; bits of our lives are taken from us but others are added to make us whole. Though, sometimes, we are taken from the bits of our lives, and have to

Jim Dietz says that recalls do occur in their industry but they have never had a recall of this magnitude. The Cranor Corporation s loss from the product recall, even though significant in amount, does not satisfy both concepts of unusual and infrequent occurrence. Recalls should be considered as a risk in operating business. Moreover, recalls can be disguise of management shortfall and affect the company credibility. The company suffered loss from a recall that resulted from operations. Consequently, it should be included in continuing operations and reported as a separate component of continuing operations. The CEO and the company controller are faced with an ethical dilemma. Their bonuses are calculated based on the income from continuing operations. A conflict of interest exists. The decision of the executives is influenced by the possibility of personal gain. They personally profit from the decision to report the recall as an extraordinary item. Also, they might be misclassifying the recall expense transaction as extraordinary in order to improve the results of continuing operations. Reporting extraordinary items as a separate section of

In the reading, Hidden Intellectualism, by Gerald Graff, a professor at the University of Illinois Chicago, he touches on the subject of being street smart but not doing too hot in school. He argues that if students could be as interested in school, and as book smart as they were street smart, then they would have the opportunity to thrive and excel in school all while enjoying it, he even goes on to use himself as an example of taking an anti intellectual and becoming a great intellectual. Graff goes on the introduce the idea of taking non intellectual topics or objects and seeing them through academic eyes which would allow students to become engaged in the learning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He believes this is to blame for the harsh separation between street smart and book smart, because although they should both tie in with each other like the way they function in the real world, they are frowned upon instead of being encouraged in today s academic setting. Diverse topics, topics that students find that their interested in, not only limited to bland stereotypical subjects should most definitely be allowed and highly encouraged in today s academic realm, because truth be told, not everyone wakes up and says, I am so excited to read Macbeth by WIlliam Shakespeare and write about it like there s no tomorrow, it s just uncommon. There are more than 2.1 million students on 114 campuses, in community colleges in California alone according to the California Community College Chancellor s Office, and we are all different, but expected to learn the same way. How does that make any sense? What one students might find interesting, the other might detest. For example, I enjoyed reading Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck whereas my peers despised it. This ties back to what Graff had stated about students being allowed to write and read texts or subjects which are of their interest as long as they are viewed through academic eyes. I agree with the idea that street smarts are more intellectual than book smarts, and that students individual interests can be more effective than typical learning material. In the text, Graff uses the

The Mental Health Treatment Of Australia In the Mental Health treatment we can distinguish two different approaches to patient treatment, this is known as models of treatment, firstly we have a medical model, and secondary we a using person recovery model. To understanding of recovery in Australia, we have to acknowledge that is heavily influenced by recovery research and literature from the USA, Canada and New Zealand It is suggested that the term recovery has been adopted in Australia from the late 1980s (Lakeman, 2004, p.212; McGrath et al., 2007). It has become popular in mental health discourse and influences policy directives and service delivery initiatives (Meehan et al., 2007; Rickwood, 2004; Slade et al., 2008). Medical model in the mental health mostly concentrates on the treatment of the physiological aspect of illness, this model is used at the inpatients admissions, by psychiatrist overall in the clinical /medical settings. There are many definitions of term Medical Model many of them suggested that it is a scientifically proven process, concentrates on the treatment of the symptoms, is not client centred, and medical professionals are in charge of making and presiding with consumer treatment plan , some professionals also describe the medical model as the Western approach to illness. When we talking about mental health recovery we will take under consideration not only medical model but also the effect of psychotherapy, and person centred model of recovery. • 42. Alternative Energy Sources For Renewable Energy Renewable energy has become a widely popular topic in society. With the rapid depletion of fossil fuels, scientist are looking to natural and renewable resources to create a means to produce sustainable energy. There are many alternative energy sources that have proven useful in the past couple of years. Some of the alternative energy sources are not only more useful than others but have proven to be easier to attain and also prove to create a more substantial amount of energy. Today, the most widely used form of renewable energyis hydroelectric energy. Making up 20 percent of global electricity generation, hydroelectric energy is crucial in the production of electrical power and sustaining the environment. How It Works Hydroelectric energy is produced through the use of falling or flowing water. Large amounts of water usually contained in dams flow through a passageway called a penstock. In order for the water to fall and flow into a penstock the dam must be built on a large body of water with a large drop in elevation. After flowing through the penstock the water intake rushes through and forcefully turns a turbine propeller. Connected to the turbine propeller is a shaft. The shaft continues out of the water and connects to a generator and a powerhouse. The generator thus produces electricity into the powerhouse and ultimately into surrounding homes and buildings in proximity to the dam. The water then continues to flow into the major body of water from which it came and

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is a greater importance and value attached to employees contributions. In today s society, employees play a key role towards establishing a successful organizational performance. Training and Development has Positive Impacts on Employee s Work Morale /Motivation Studies have also found that the success of training and development is directly related to the degree of employees motivation (Colquitt, LePine and Noe, 2000). This is because employees motivation/work morale is derived from the training and development opportunities, which allow them to enhance their skills and move up the corporate ladder. Employees consider training and development a non monetary incentive or a form of reward for an employee. (Fischer and Nunn, 1992) In addition, when employees are selected for training and development programs, it increases employees post training organizational commitment, self efficacy and training motivation. Employees tend to feel a higher job satisfaction and empowerment in their workplace. Thus, the higher the training motivation, the more the employees are willing to participate in future training and development programs and the better the employee s work morale/motivation becomes (Tharenou, 2001). Training and Development has Positive Impacts on Employees Performance Training and development allows organizations to achieve management objectives, resolve issues and align cultures to their mission and values. Kurt Vonnegut Essay Kurt Vonnegut Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. is a contemporary American author whose works have been described by Richard Giannone as comic masks covering the tragic farce that is our contemporary life (Draper, 3784). Vonnegut s life has had a number of significant influences on his works. Influences from his personal philosophy, his life and experiences, and his family are evident elements in his works. Among his comic masks are three novels: Cat s Cradle, The Sirens of Titan, and God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater. Throughout these novels, elements such as attitude, detail, narrative technique, setting, and theme can be viewed with more understanding when related to certain aspects of his life. Before the novel even starts, just below the dedication, he declares, Nothing in this book is true. Live by the foma [harmless untruths] that make you brave and kind and healthy and happy (Vonnegut, Cradle). Vonnegut carries this concept all through the story, that the universe is meaningless and each person must exist for oneself. He even goes to the extent of inventing a religion, Bokononism, with which humans attempt to make some sense of everything, while realizing that everything is nonsensical. Vonnegut s existential philosophy also takes the form of a religion in The Sirens of Titan. The Church of God the Utterly Indifferent is established, on the principle that puny man can do nothing at all to help or please God Almighty, and Luck is not the hand of God (Vonnegut, Sirens, 180). Toward the end of the story, two existential ideas are developed: first that human life is incomprehensible (in this case controlled by aliens from another planet for a trivial purpose), and second that people must make a meaning for life on their own. When one character states, The worst thing that could possibly happen. . . would be to not be used for anything by anybody, Vonnegut is suggesting that a good meaning for life might simply be to be

  • 46. The Importance Of A Career In Mechanical Engineering... I remember when I was in elementary school taking a trip to a food manufacturer and seeing the scope and size of big manufacturing plants really changed the way I viewed my future. It is often said the success of a society in this modern world is often closely tied to what it produces and the quantity it is able to produce these products. I have always had a fascination with how things that we rely on everyday are made. This drove me to decide that I would pursue a career in mechanical engineeringtechnology because it revolved around the very things I like doing the most. Mechanical engineeringtechnology is a broad and expansive career field that can take me many places as will be described further. A mechanical engineering/technologist applies the principles of engineering for the creation of useful products or machinery, they also may assist other technical professionals in designing and manufacturing of engineering ideas before they are mass produced or further developed (Bureau of labor and statistics, 2015). The required education for this career according to the bureau of labor and statistics is that a person is required to have a bachelor s degree in mechanical engineering technology or a mechanical engineering degree. Often people get confused between a traditional engineering degree and a engineering/technologist degree, let me explain, the major difference between a traditional mechanical engineering degree and a mechanical engineering technology degree is that
  • 47. The Bell Jar, By Sylvia Plath Of the two readings we were given to select from for our Midterm Assignment, I chose to conduct my initial psychosocial and diagnostic assessment on the character, Esther, from the semi autobiographical novel The Bell Jar , by Sylvia Plath. The protagonist in the novel is a 19 year old girl from the suburbs of Boston growing up in the 1950 s who has accepted a summer internship working at a prominent magazine in New York City. It is made clear from the beginning of the novel that Esther s move has resulted in a possible adjustment disorder as she narrates her feelings of sadness, misplacement, and disconnectedness from reality. It is evident that she is painfully aware of her approaching melancholic depression as evidenced by her opening statement, I knew something was wrong with me that summer and later, I felt very still and very empty, the way the eye of a tornado must feel, moving dully along in the middle of the surrounding hullabaloo (Plath, 1971). Throughout the novel, Esther holds the wits and self awareness to know something is or has been stewing within, while simultaneously having a skewed perception of the world around her. Feelings of helplessness and entrapment are illustrated by the metaphor Esther has created The bell jarthat suggests she has lost control of herself. Esther describes the bell jar as a symbolic meaning of the lenses in which she see s life through; a trapped space where she lives in her own sour air , separated from the world
