Potential Of Microbial Fuel Cells
Potential of Microbial Fuel Cells
A microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a device that converts chemical energy to electrical energy by the
catalytic and metabolic reactions of microorganisms. The microorganisms function as a catalyst in the
electron transfer between the electrodes. A MFC is just like any other fuel cell in its function which
can undergo a half cell reaction. A typical microbial fuel cell consists of anode and cathode
compartments separated by a cation (positively charged ion) permitting specific membrane. At the
anode, the organic matter or substrate is oxidized by microorganisms, generating CO2, electrons and
protons. Electrons are transferred to the cathode through an external electric circuit, while protons are
transferred to the cathode through the membrane. Electrons and protons react in the cathode,
combining with oxygen to form water.
A simple REDOX reaction takes place in the fuel cell. The rate of the reactions can depend on the
internal resistance, bacteria, substrate, semi permeable membrane and electrode configuration. The
basic reactions that occur when microorganisms consume a substrate such as sugar in the presence of
O2 they produce CO2 and H2O. But, when oxygen is not present they produce CO2, H+ and e .
At Anode,
C12H22O11 +13H2O → 12CO2 + 48H+ + 48e−
At Cathode,
O2 + 4e− + 4H+ → 2H2O
The applications of MFC s are that, they can be used for electricity generation, bio hydrogen
production, wastewater treatment and bioremediation. While

Compare and Contrast the Chicago and Los Angeles Schools...
Essay: Compare and Contrast the Chicago and Los Angeles Schools of Urbanism.
Urban studies aims to develop an understanding the modern city metropolis. As Savage et al. have
pointed out, the urban encompasses far more than just the physical city itself; understanding the city
help us to understand many aspects of modern life (2003, pp.4). Many of its features, such as mass
media and public transport systems have spread throughout society over the past century. Sociological
studies of urban life began with the landmark publication of The City in 1925 by sociologists Robert
Park, Ernest Burgess and Louis Wirth from the University of Chicago, students of Georg Simmel who
shared his belief that the urban environment changed man s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

113). In addition Knox and Pinch suggest empirical evidence supporting Wirth s theory to be lacking
(pp. 152).
The Los Angeles school begins with quite different precepts, disputing the hypotheses of the Chicago
School. They contend its orientation towards individuals as explaining the environment (for example
the genius/criminal type creating vice and disorder (Park 1925, pp. 41)), its historical determinism and
its view of the city as a cohesive, stable unit (Dear 2008, pp. 109). Its theoretical bases, rather than the
structural, modernist paradigms of the Chicago School are postmodern, 21st century ones. For
example Mike Davis, one of the leading thinkers of the LA school, cites Fredric Jameson s conception
of postmodernity, with globalised, temporary forces producing uncertain outcomes (Davis 1998, pp.
84). Edward Soja, another sociologist of the LA school, has employed Foucault s post structuralist
paradigm to explain some aspects of the postmodern city, for example he has likened the central
downtown district of the city to a new panopticon , Foucault s conception of a form of total
surveillance and control for the centre over the periphery. He suggests as a headquarters of space,
knowledge and power with universal visibility throughout the city, it can supervise economic and
social activity, and is able to surveil the surrounding city (Soja 1989, pp. 234 6). Another highly
influential postmodern theorist in the LA School has been Henri Lefevbre

The Character Roster And The Author s Technique
Chaucer s General Prologue: The Character Roster and The Author s Technique In the General
Prologue of Geoffrey Chaucer s Canterbury Tales , readers are introduced to twenty nine pilgrims,
who will, as a collective unit make their journey to St. Thomas Beckett. As the poet encounters each
pilgrim on the voyage, his attention to detail is not focused solely on opinion or his own perspective of
the individual, but the individual in every sense. His way of describing each character s traits,
appearance and overall attitude is done so quite casually, on a first glance basis. There is a realness
within the General Prologue that allows readers to visualize the described individual because they
have their own identities, separating them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Placing this young solider under his father, demonstrates the power and rank that differs within the
family and in the social order, yet the contrast of their intentions is not the only image the poet
provides. In following the poet s pattern of appearance, readers see the Squire well dressed compared
to his father, as fresh as is the month of May/ Short was his gown with sleeves long and wide (92 93).
This attention to his appearance plays into this dedication to battle versus winning a woman s heart
quite well, further reinforcing this contrast between father and son. While the two differ in their
service to their Lord and their nobility, the representation of character continues as the poet describes
the Prioress and the Monk, two differing religious figures within this journey. There was also a nun, a
Prioress as the poet writes, her smiling was full simple and coy , she pledged her allegiance to the
fashionable convent (118 119). The presentation of this character holds a double meaning in its way,
as this woman s devotion is not solely focused on religion, but her appearance, it seems, as she has
began this pilgrimage rather than remaining on holy land. In the image of her personal appearance,
Chaucer attaches this sense of elegance that differs from her male counterparts. Readers are able to
understand this different perspective of elegance in regards to the nun, who is not coated with makeup
and jewels, but demonstrates elegance in

The Fault In Our Stars Movie And Movie Analysis
Novels are always better than films because they have more details than a film. While reading a novel
the readers can imagine the scenes with details it gives. Meanwhile, in films, the reader doesn t get the
whole effect on how a character feels. The Fault in Our Stars novel is better than the film itself. The
Fault in Our Stars is a story of a young sixteen year old named Hazel Grace who is a survivor of
cancer. Grace meets a young boy named Augustus Waters at the cancer support group. They fall in
love. Grace feels like this boy understands her and have so much in common. Augustus Waters and
Hazel Grace go to Amsterdam to meet Peter Van Houten. He is a famous author who wrote a novel
called An Imperial Affliction, While Grace and Waters are at Amsterdam, they fall in love. They
continue on going to dates and being with each other the most they could. Augustus knew he was
going to die soon. He planned his funeral and dies days later. The Fault in Our Stars novel is different
from the film. For example, in the novel, the author talks about how Hazel visits Isaac at the hospital
often because his eye surgery, Hazel notices Augustus staring at her during the support group meeting,
and Hazel drives to Augustus house to pick him up before their trip because she overhears him arguing
with his mother

Dred Scott V. Sandford
When Dred Scott v. Sandford was decided in 1857, it made an enormous impact on the United States.
It riled up both pro and anti slavery Americans. It angered many Americans in an extreme example of
judicial activism. Some say it made the Civil War inevitable. By the time the dust had settled and the
13th and 14th Amendments reversed the Court s decision, Dred Scott could be considered one of the
worst Supreme Court decisions of all time. And yet, although the case was egregiously wrong, it still
can be considered a great case . As Dred Scott exemplifies, a case does not have to be good in order to
be great . Some of the most important great cases are also some of the most terrible cases. Our panel
would thus prefer to call the cases that fit Mr. White s definition significant cases rather than great
cases , because great generally implies a value judgment along with its judgment on significance, and
in generalizing the idea of a significant case , value judgments are typically not consistent. There are
significant cases that are great, and significant cases that are the opposite of great. Dred Scott is a
significant case but not a great one. With that clarification in mind, the Dred Scott decision does fit
Mr. White s definition of a significant case, at least in part. There are three main prongs of this
definition, each of which applies to the Dred Scott case: first, a significant case asks the court to
resolve a deeply contested issue; second, the court decides

Defiance in Minorities of United States
The spoils of hegemony spread through the American landscape in those ebullient years following
World War II. The perks of empire building abroad translated into an uninterrupted period of
economic growth and labor reforms that re calibrated the national consciousness and allowed, for the
first time, the emergence of a middle class with sufficient autonomy and self awareness to exert
political influence and correct the power imbalance that had characterized the first decades of the 20th
century. This social Renaissance, however, had been distributed unevenly along racial lines, and no
government of the time sought to redress the disparity between white economic advancement and the
stagnant conditions imposed on social minorities, ossified as they were by decades of systematic
subjugation before society and before the law. Discontent seethed beneath black communities, who
felt increasingly isolated and persecuted by the same social institutions who had demanded so high a
sacrifice during the second World War, a sacrifice summoned and re visited by the looming threat of a
war with Vietnam. The landmark Brown vs. Board of Education was seen by many as a hollow
victory, given the lethargic response of the Eisenhower administration to enforce the legislation,
particularly in the Southern states where racial tensions, unaddressed by the larger cultural zeitgeist,
had metamorphosed into open hostility and palpable contempt. An American president would not

Require Parenting Classes
Required Parenting Class:
The One Thing That Could Save Children
Rock a bye baby in the tree top, when the wind blows the cradle will rock. When the bough breaks the
cradle will fall, down will come baby, cradle and all. A nursery rhyme, created so long ago, gives
insight into unsafe parenting. A child is falling while being outside in unhealthy weather conditions. A
child needs tender love and care in a safe environment, not a place outside in the wind. Today,
gradually people are procreating, but they have no idea how to enter into parenthood. Poor parenting
has been a problem going far back, simply when parents don t know how to care for a child or what to
expect when being a parent.
Before becoming a parent, soon to be s should ought to take classes to prepare themselves. The classes
would include what becoming a parent means, what to expect (with real life examples), how to
manage children when they are young and later in life, and finally, how to prepare them for the next
stages in their life. Parenting classes are powerful tools that every mother, father, and soon to be s
should take. Parenting classes could help better our society by providing caregivers with the
knowledge needed to be successful. Providing parenting classes could have the potential to ... Show

parents aren t the only ones that shake babies in time of desperation, babysitters can do the same thing.

Managers were asked are there too many or too few people entering their profession. Erica, Carol, and
Elana all found there could never be too many people in a profession and that growth was essential to
their industry. Kade and Nikki took the opposing view, finding there to be too many people joining the
field, and found this was particularly because, there isn t educational requirement and as long as you
have management skills your qualified. They were then asked if there were any new developments on
the horizon that could affect future opportunities. Nikki said online shopping has made a huge impact
in the way shoppers like to shop, and because online shopping is so popular stores are not as busy
anymore. Carol says the changes in the economy affect the future opportunities. Erica said there were
not really any new developments. Kade said the rate of human travel and changes in the economy.
Elana thinks the only thing that can affect future opportunities are not continuing to learn new
techniques or tricks . the beauty industry is constantly changing and you need to know how to keep up
with the latest trends and be willing to learn them. When asked why people leave these fields: Erica
and Carol said it was because of the physicality involved. Nikki believes it is because people mostly
look at retail positions as transitional positions, unless you are working at the corporate office. Kade
said it was the quality of life and Elana that some people leave it once they get into beauty school and
see it is not for them. To close this topic managers were asked for the most important local people in
their industry today. Kade said young professionals entering the field with new ideas. Elana said Paul

The Roles Of Emma s Emma And Her Father
Emma and her father
Mr. Woodhouse is a sickly person whose main concern is his ill health a nervous man, easily
depressed (5). While we are told that Emma dearly loved her father, he also was no companion for her.
He could not meet her in conversation, rational or playful (24). Mr. Woodhouse demonstrates
excessive hypochondria and a constant demand for attention that are provided unflaggingly by Emma;
In a striking reversal, she functions as his parent, caring for his needs and guiding him with her
superior understanding and emotional strength. Though much older than his daughter, Mr. Woodhouse
cannot provide her with the figure of authority, wisdom, and strength. Instead, he looks to her for
leadership and comfort. Consequently, Emma infantilizes the old man, she forever shields her father
against critique and thereby sustains his dependence. In return, Mr. Woodhouse heralds Emma as ...

Mr. Knightley says to Mrs. Weston: ever since she was twelve, Emma has been mistress of the house
and of you all. In her mother she lost the only person able to cope with her. She inherits her mother s
talents, and must have been under subjection to her (48). Emma then is linked to her mother as similar
in temperament and talent and, presumably, in her capacity to control Mr. Woodhouse. With the
mother gone, a force of subjection, and with very little evidence to suggest this absence as in any way
traumatic to Emma. Emma s intellect and sagaciousness allow her control of the estate, free of any
rivals from within the family, and now embodies the location of phallic signification. This authority
extends beyond the household, however, because Hartfield itself is already acknowledged by the
community as the first in consequence (25). Emma s situation allows for the Oedipal dynamic to be
symbolically gratified while simultaneously giving her preeminent status in the community.

Lincoln s Failure
Realizing that you ve failed something is hard to do. No one wants to accept defeat, and that s a flaw
that most people have. Failure isn t always negative. However, it isn t always easy to apply this
concept to your own situation either. When we think of failing, we think of not being good enough or
not having the qualities needed to improve. We look down upon failure and defeat instead of seeing
the raw potential it holds. If you feel hopeless when your goal isn t accomplished the way you wanted
it to be, there is no need to worry: it s extremely natural to lose motivation when you re standing face
to face with disappointment or negativity. What you do have to keep in mind is that recovery can t be
reached without considering three major points: conviction, value, and motivation. Each failure is

The best way is to take a glance someone else s failure. You can compare your own to theirs, and
while doing so you should keep an eye out for their recovery. We all know that Abraham Lincoln was
one of the greatest president s the United States has ever seen, but have you ever considered his
backstory? From 1816 to 1860, he held a long lasting losing streak: our great leader was in a slump
that he couldn t find a way to escape from. Burdened with the deaths of various loved ones, nervous
breakdowns, rejection and losses, Lincoln would be expected to give up. It would be very hard for any
normal person to go through as much as he did and still make it out alive. He lost eight different times
before he would even become the president of our country. Finding the strength within himself, he
continuously used it to get up, brush the dirt off his shoulder, and learn from his mistakes. Without
conviction and purpose, he would have never been able to find the potential within each obstacle he

The Reflection Of The Lesson Of Engineering Concepts
1. What was the focus of the lesson?
The focus of this lesson was the STEAM skill, engineering. This lesson of engineering phrases was
taught to a group of eighteen kindergarten students at Bartlett Elementary on November 16, 2017. The
entirety of this lesson lasted roughly forty five minutes.
2. How did the teacher introduce the lesson? Did the teacher specifically let the students know what
they would know or be able to do by the end of the lesson?
When introducing the lesson, the teacher Mrs. Taylor, started off by having the students recount what
they had done in the previous class (which was one week before this lesson). Mrs. Taylor called on
students who told her that last week they read the story, The Three Little Pigs, and that they built
homes for their own pigs. Another student brought up the fact that they each worked as a team, with
the students at their table, to build their homes. Mrs. Taylor then asked the students what where the
three materials provided to build their homes. The students replied that two groups each got one of the
materials which was straw, sticks, or bricks. Mrs. Taylor then passed out a worksheet to the students,
asking them to grab a pencil and to write their names using the dotted lines, and top and bottom lines
located at the top of the page. Then Mrs. Taylor had the students circle which of the materials that
their group used to build their homes. To help the students remember, Mrs. Taylor walked over to a
table and brought each group their houses, so that they would remember. Once the students circled
their material, they then had to draw a picture of their home on the box located in the bottom left of
the worksheet. While students were drawing, Mrs. Taylor walked around and was asking students
about their homes (structures) and if they think they could stand up to the Big Bad Wolf. Once the
majority of the students were done drawing their picture, Mrs. Taylor told the students what they
would be doing next, which was that each group s home would go up against the Big Bad Wolf, which
was just a higher powered electric fan. Before moving over the fan Mrs. Taylor asked the students the
following, Is this your first time building a house? All of the students

Alcatraz Prison As A Prison
Alcatraz was one of the toughest prisons to escape from with nearly no chance of success. Alcatraz is
22 acres of solid rock and cliffs that was once a military base but after many years as a military base it
was transformed into a prison. This landmark is now managed by the National Park services as it is
now a big tourist attraction for many. The guards that kept Alcatraz in tact were primarily retired
soldiers and police officers. Alcatraz was opened for only 29 years and during the 29 years it was open
there were 36 attempted escapes. Alcatraz was the most impenetrable prison in america at the time.
Alcatraz had set ground rules for the prisoners and if they were to break them there were going to be
consequences to follow their actions. The prisoners were permitted to play softball ,
bandball, volleyball, and bridge. The prisoners were once able to play horseshoes but prisoners would
take the horseshoes and beat each other with them. Alcatraz was known to have a lot of notorious
prisoners that were imprisoned there. Al capone was the most notorious prisoner there but was set free
after countless court hearings.
There were a total of 36 escape attempts during Alcatraz s 29 years of being open as a prison. James
Lucas and Rufus Franklin were the first to have a violent escape attempt as they killed a guard with a
hammer. They both were caught and given life sentences for killing a guard in their escape attempt.

The Cost Recovery Act And Tobacco Litigation
The United States is believed to be a free country, not monocracy. No one wants the government to
charge them extra for the snacks they decide to eat. People want to make the choice to be healthy on
their own. The choice is up to the individual it is not the governments` choice to make. No matter how
much more the taxes the government puts on junk and fatty food, it will not stop people from eating
them. 2. In the academic journal, The Cost Recovery Act and Tobacco Litigation in Canada: A Model
for Fast Food Litigation, the states: One of the most well known fast food litigation cases in the United
States is Pelman v. McDonald s Corp. In Pelman, two minors sued the fast food restaurant McDonalds
claiming, among other things, that McDonalds acted at least negligently in selling food products that
are high in cholesterol, fat, salt and sugar when studies show that such foods cause obesity and
detrimental health effects. One of the weaknesses of the plaintiffs claims in Pelman is common to food
litigation in general. The Pelman court elegantly expressed this issue, asking where the line should be
drawn between an individual s own responsibility to take care of herself, and society s responsibility
to ensure that others shield her? The court held that if consumers know (or reasonably should know)
the potential ill health effects of eating at McDonalds, they cannot blame McDonalds if they,
nonetheless, choose to satiate their appetite with a surfeit of supersized

This also shows how the Olympics changed in the United States. In 1980, 62 nations boycotted the

Also in 1992, Jordan helped the United States bring home the gold medal from Barcelona, Spain. One

Literary Interpretation In The Storm By Kate Chopin
The Storm by Kate Chopin
The entire setting of the story The Storm by Kate Chopin is an accurate reflection of an adulterous
situation. It employs the symbol The Storm to portray an exact circumstance that acknowledges the
existence of unfaithfulness through adultery. The story took place in the period 1800s and gives a clear
account of an affair that constituted Calixta who was the protective mother to Bibi and the wife to
Bobinot, Alcee, the husband to Clarisse. The relationship among the people above took place at the
prime time when there existed a violent rainstorm. As such, the depiction of the rainstorm does not
give an account of a particular coincidence that occurred behind the whole scene but represents an
external influence through which the proximity of the narration and the affair appeared
simultaneously. The narrative begins with the storm occurrence, reaches its peak and ceases, so
happens in paradox along with the relationship and the story.
The whole scene is a true tale and a replication of a how females were sexually burdened in the 19th
century period under the notion of male chauvinism and superiority. It also explicates women
discovery of their rights and freedom over their body and relations. In that light, the story marks the
end of female oppression and a transition for transformation on the female gender. Mainly, Kate s
literary work comprises of the content that happened at the particular time of the century and the

René Lalique became synonymous with French Art Nouveau decorative arts. René Lalique was born
in 1860 and first began designing fine jewelry in Paris in 1881. Lalique pursued increasingly more
innovative experimentation in glass commencing around 1883. Early works used the familiar lost wax
technique by which the model is made in wax while a mold is formed around the model. Then, the
wax is melted and molten glass is poured into the mold. Lalique glass was made in this manner until
approximately 1905 at which time the factory was redesigned for a larger production. As such, the

Some of these creations are now on display at the Orrefors Glass Museum. The news that artists were

development of the traditional Bohemian cooper wheel engraving. On the whole, Orrefors offered
broad scope for experiment and innovation with new techniques being developed and older ones

Success led to the arrival of new designers. The graphic artist Vicke Lindstrand came to Orrefors in

end of the 1920 s as engravers, apprentices, and after service as assistants to Simon Gate and Edward
Hald became full fledged glass artists during the 1930 s. The sculptor Edvin Ohrstrom joined Orrefors
in 1936.

Icu Case Studies
The purpose of this assignment is to identify and evaluate the effectiveness of nursing care to a patient
in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The assignment presents a case study on a patient who
suffered an out of hospital cardiac arrest, and includes the reason for admission, diagnosis,
interventions, management and progress. Due to the many nursing interventions involved in the case
study and the word constraints of the assignment, four primary interventions will be focused on, being
neuroprotective cares, suctioning, pain and sedation, and family centred care. Furthermore, supporting
evidence will be provided and discussed on the impact the care had on both patient and their family, as
well as external resources. Lastly,

Argumentative Essay On Role Playing Games
Kids all across America play role playing games that involve shooting each other with water guns
which sounds harmless and innocent but some people think different. A select hand of people think
that kids and teenagers playing role playing games are violent and could lead the kids into a troubled
future, but they really are just harmless. The reasons for why role playing games like senior assassin
are harless are that it isn t real killing, it doesn t involve real guns, no one gets hurt, and that it is
usually set up by the school that all of the students attend. But on the other hand the people that think
that it is violent have no real evidence and only say things like someone could get hurt, but from what
the water, and they also say that it involves weapons but that really doesn t mean anything.
The evidence for why it is harmless is because there has never been a death or killing from playing
those harmless games because there is nothing wrong with them. Others say that the game is very
dangerous but there is no evidence for that, the only thing that they say is that it simulates violence but
there is really nothing violent about it, besides that the game is just fun. A quote from an article called
Violent video games may stop crime by keeping criminals busy playing violent video games and in
that it says violent video games may have directly contributed to the decrease in real world violence.
That quote really means a lot because it is saying that there is

Comparison Of I Love Lucy And The Simpsons
A lot has changed in the years of TV, but in terms of sitcoms between the two shows I love Lucy and
the Simpson there has been a lot of change. I love Lucy is an American television sitcom that was
made in 1951 and ended in 1957. I love Lucy was an old modern television showed that was in black
and white, the picture was old and not as advanced as television today. The Simpsons is an American
animated sitcom started in 1989 and is still showing as of today. The Simpsons is a more colorful and
also animated TV show. The picture is better and it got better as the years went on. I don t think
anything has changed in terms the focus of comedy. The focus of comedy has always been current

Historical Development of Nursing Timeline
...Nursing science is that body of knowledge developed form questions raised by nurses and
investigated by them, concerning the relationship of the human health environment as Dr. Millar
stated (George, 2011, p.11). The body of nursing science consists of theories, paradigms, and
frameworks (George, 2011, p. 10). A nursing theory could be defined as a set of concepts, definitions,
relationships, and assumptions or propositions derived from nursing models or from other disciplines
and project a purposive, systematic view of phenomena by designing specific inter relationships
among concepts for the purposes of describing, explaining, predicting, and /or prescribing Nursing

Numerous research projects were done to support those nursing theories and to provide the base for
evidence based practice. The other important milestone of 1990s would the internationalization of
nursing theories as it was evidenced by international conferences and publications (George, 2011).
Many nursing models were revised and republished. Among already familiar theories and names from
previous decades, the most important nursing theories of 1990s would include: K. Kolcaba s A Theory
of Holistic Comfort for Nursing (1994); C. Roy s Future of the Roy Model (1997); B. Neuman s The
Neuman Systems Model in Research and Practice (1996); M.E. Levine s The Rhetoric of Nursing
Theory (1995) and other multiple theories. 2000s The beginning of new millennium was characterized
by acceptance of diversity of nursing theories. The diversity of nursing theories allowed the
development of more middle range theories that guide the research and evidence based practice
(George, 2011). Important works during 2000s would include: A. Melels Theoretical Nursing:
Development and Progress (2007); M. Leininger s Culture Care Diversity and Universality (2006) and
others. Profession is defined as a vocation requiring extensive education in science or the liberal arts
and often specialized training (Definitions.net, 2014). The nursing science is related to profession of

Personal nursing philosophy is important to individualized nurses because different nurses care for
different patients. Marchuk (2014) notes, The use of a nursing philosophy as the basis for nursing
practice promotes the proper application of nursing knowledge as well as the development of further
nursing theory and knowledge. Nursing philosophy is different for every kind of nurse and each
individual nurse, some seek compassion and knowledge, were as other seek professionalism and
dignity. All nurses are different, and this paper will be focusing on the Licensed Practical Nurse and
the roles and tasks of an LPN.
Background of the LPN
There are many roles and tasks that can be performed under the LPNs scope of practice. The LPN can
give medications prescribed by the doctor, give immunizations approved by the healthcare provider,
preform daily wound care and vital signs, take medical histories and enter provided information into
the computer documents, (Licensed Practical Nurse, 2017). The Licensed Practical Nurse can watch
over the UAP, monitor intake and output, and help with patient transferring as well. The LPN has a lot
responsibly and works as the eyes and ears of a doctor or a registered nurse.

DON T MOCK THE TURTLE: BUSINESS DEALS WITH CHINA
This case is based on a failed business deal between two important economies: Germany and China.
Although the relationship between the two managers seemed to go well in the beginning, it quickly
turned around over their business dinner. It is in the Chinese culture to give a gift to their guest; the
Chinese director politely offered to eat a turtle to the German manager to show his respect. The
German manager refused it, as this seemed weird and unusual to him. This is where the problem
happened. The reaction of both parties was wrong. The German manager asked for chicken instead but
the Chinese director ignored his request as he did not understand his denial and ordered the turtle.
When the dishes were served, the German manager was taken by surprise and expressed his
resentment in a rude way. The Chinese director did not understand his reaction and felt offended by
him not accepting his expensive gift. In just a moment the deal was broken and they separated. Both
companies suffered from this failed deal, the German company endured the worst consequences.
To better understand this case, we are now going to analyze both cultures by using various models:

The Development of the Tuberculosis Vaccine
Introduction:
Mycobacterium tuberculosis is one of the leading causes of mortality in all over the world. The
infection caused by M. tuberculosis is commonly known as tuberculosis or TB. According to a CDC
report, in 2012, approximately nine million patients were infected globally with TB and the fatality
was around 1.3 million1. It is estimated that nearly one third of the global population is infected with
TB.
M. tuberculosis was first described by Robert Koch in the year 1882 as the tubercle bacillus . The
bacterium belongs to a special group of microorganisms that contain a thick, waxy, lipid rich layer of
mycolic acid on their cell surface. The mycolic acid makes this bacterium tolerant to a number of

inadequate administration of the antibiotics. Drug resistance has become such an extensive problem
now, that there are multiple categories of drug resistance TB, such as, Multi drug resistant TB (MDR
TB) and Extensively drug resistant TB (XDR TB).
MDR TB is defined as a form of TB that is resistant to the two most potent TB antibiotics, isoniazid
and rifampin. MDR TB is mostly associated with secondary resistance 5. MDR TB spreads in the
same manner as sensitive TB from one person to another. MDR TB arises due to the bacteria starting
to synthesize drug degrading enzymes or drug efflux or due to spontaneous mutations. In order to treat
MDR TB, community based therapeutic approaches with programs such as MDR TB specific Directly
Observed Therapy Short Course (DOTS) Plus holds promise 6. Another approach follows therapy
with second line antibiotics, however those are more expensive and have notable side effects. MDR
TB is believed to have a mortality rate of 80%.
XDR TB is a more aggressive form of TB that has actually arisen from inadequate use or misuse of
MDR TB drugs. This form of TB involves infection with M. tuberculosis that has acquired resistance
to not only the first line of anti TB antibiotics like isoniazid and rifampin along with any member of
quinolones but also to at least one member of second line of

The Visual And Performance Arts Of Europe
Welcome, to my traveler s guide to the performing and visual arts. In this guide, you will explore first
hand, the visual and performance arts of Europe.
First, we will look at performance arts of Europe which, date back to early 534 B.C. when Thespis
won the first public contest for tragic poets in Greece. The term thespian derives from Thespis s name.
In addition, Thespis also introduced performance masks, which would soon become a staple of Greek
and Roman Theater.
Let s fast forward quite a ways, to 1576, where the first commercial theater is opened in London,
England, becoming the first Elizabeth playhouse in the world. Many performance pieces were

Visual art, has also been a prominent factor in European culture and society. Visual art began in
Europe during Prehistoric times, somewhere around 30 to 20000 BCE, this art was located in a cave in
Spain and is known as the El Castillo Cave Art , which is so far, the oldest known cave paintings in
the world. Going further in time, European artwork is emboldened by many great painters and
architects such as Leonardo DaVinci and Michelangelo; whom were famous for some of the greatest
canvas and architectural paintings known in the world today. Most of these paintings from these artist,
can be found in our next location, The Louvre, in Paris, France.
The Louvre, was built in 1190, as a fortress to the Empire of France. The LeMusee du Louvre, is
located along the banks of the Seine River, in Paris. The Louvre, was reconstructed after it s time as a
fortress, to serve as a royal palace. Its expansion continued over the years, covering a total area of now
652, 300 square feet, much more than its original square footage of less than 600,000. In 1793, after

Long Paper #1: Response Paper
Dear Mr. Dalai Lama,
In your excerpt, Ethics and the New Genetics, you presented the discovery of the advancement in
genetic technology. You mentioned how scientist are able to change the genetic makeup of living
things. Another key point presented in your article is the idea of cloning, where one is therapeutic
while the other is reproductive. The article discussed that the advancement in technology and genetics
should only be used to benefit people. However, you believed that using these advancements in the
wrong way can leave a long term consequence to the present and future of the human society. (The
Dalai Lama).
I agree with your opinion in how genetic technology could leave a negative impact to our society. I
believe the idea of genetic engineering is not natural. We have no idea of the harm that could result
from this technology. Genetic engineering is another step in giving humans their desires. I believe that
altering the DNA of any life form is not just. Genetically manipulating a life form could put an
imbalance in nature and society. No one should have the right to manipulate the genetics of other life
forms. The idea of genetic engineering is be consider unethical because it is enforcing animal cruelty.
Furthermore, I am appalled that some parent choose their child s appearance, rather than go through
the natural process, to prevent bullying and discrimination.

High Fidelity and Music Essay
High Fidelity and Music
In High Fidelity, Rob, the protagonist and narrator, says I find myself worrying away at that stuff
about pop music again, whether I like it because I m unhappy, or whether I m unhappy because I like
it (168). It is obvious to the reader that Rob has a very strong relationship to pop music but also that
this relationship is not as simple as the either or dichotomy he describes it as. At first, it is an
obsession that is almost pathological; by the end, it is an aid to his relationships and his idea of who he
is. Rob s relationship to music helps us understand Rob as a character through the different ways he
uses it to interact in his environment either as a crutch inhibiting his growth or as a way to aid ... Show

It is as if he is saying here, this is me; this is who I am so if the woman likes the tape, that means she
likes him, which would mean she is condoning who he is, which in turn would cause him to weave the
music that got this approval even more closely into his sense of self. Thus Rob is defined by music
and women he dates rather than through his own eyes. One gets a better idea of this when Rob and
Laura are arguing and Laura says she doesn t like music as much as she used to. Rob says, But you
see... That s all there is of me. There isn t anything else. If you ve lost interest in that, you ve lost
interest in everything. What s the point of us? (265). Here Rob is basically admitting that he is using
Laura to condone a definition of himself that has been created by, that entirely consists of, music. If
she can t do that anymore, there is no point of the relationship.
Another example of this is when Rob wants to sleep with Marie. The pathological aspect of this is that
part of the reason he is attracted to her is that he has always wanted to sleep with a musician. This
would be like circumventing the process of defining himself with music and then getting a woman to
condone this definition and just getting a definition and an approval from the same source. The reader
can see how Rob mingles music with Marie s personality when he says, She describes the set up and

The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy Essay
The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy
Thomas Hardy wrote the novel The Mayor of Casterbridge in 1886. Two of the main characters,
Donald Farfrae and Michael Henchard have a contrast in luck and Hardy uses characterisation,
language, historical and social background and a craft in the structure of his novel to help bring across
this point. During this essay I am going to comment upon how Hardy does this and further consider
the view that, Farfrae s good fortune is a result of Henchard s ill luck.
Throughout the novel there are many examples of Farfrae s good fortune resulting in Henchard s ill
luck. One of the most important examples in the book is when Henchard and Farfrae both gamble on

Both of these types of characterisation link in with Farfrae s good fortune and Henchard s ill luck.
Hardy creates Henchard not as an evil man but more of tragic hero. This is a person with a fatal flaw.
Henchard s main flaw is his temper. This first adds to his ill luck right at the start of the novel when he
sells Susan and his daughter in a drunken angry state. Even though this does not directly link in with
Farfrae s good fortune (as he is not present in the start of the novel) it does later on in the novel when
the furmity seller arrives back and tells the court of Henchard s secret. When Henchard admits to what
is being said by the old women all respect is lost for him and he looses his role of town mayor. When
Farfrae finally becomes mayor near the end of the novel (after the mayor after Henchard dies) his
good fortune is a result of Henchard s ill luck which is the result of his fatal flaw. Hardy also uses fate
against Henchard throughout the whole novel. An example of this is when Henchard and Farfrae both
hold a dance for the townspeople. Farfrae has his in a barn whereas Henchard s is out in the open.
When it rains on the night of the dance everyone turns out to Farfrae s even Susan and Elizabeth Jane.
This leads to Farfrae s popularity rising and Henchard s to carry on decreasing (as the dance was a

Puritans Expository Essay
Reformed Protestant individuals, with the main goal of purifying society, were considered Puritans.
Puritans disagreed with the ritualistic practices of the Church of England, and sought out new land to
practice their own personal beliefs. The first brave group of Puritans to completely disconnect
themselves from the Church were the Pilgrims. In the beginning, the Pilgrims migrated to the Dutch
Republic, but after they began to see their children adopt Dutch language and way of life, the search
for new land started once again. Therefore, in 1620, Pilgrims migrated to the Plymouth Colony
(present day Massachusetts), which was governed by William Bradford, an English separatist leader.

If any alternative influences entered Massachusetts Bay colony, the Puritans showed that they can be

She noticed the shallow teaching of Protestantism that emphasized the covenant of works opposed to
the covenant of grace . Literate women also joined Hutchinson to challenge the male minister s

Absorbance And Concentration Lab Report
The formula for measuring concentrations (Molarity) is moles/ Volume. The molarity of the diluted
sample is 3.5 x 10^ 6 M and the volume is .005 Liters. Then solve for moles by multiplying the two
knowns the product is 1.75 x 10^ 8 moles. All existing moles came from the .001 Liters of the
unknown sample. The moles should then be divide them the volume, which is 1 ml. The final answer
of the unknown concentration is 1.75 x 10^ 5 M.
Absorbance and concentration are directly related. So if .1 M has an absorbance of .26, then a solution
with 0.2 M must have an absorbance of 0.52.
The formula to convert absorbance to transmittance is Transmittance = 10^ absorbance. The equation
would be 10^ .85 and the transmittance would be .1412 or 14.12% Transmitted.

The Importance Of Chemical Kinetics
Chemical kinetics studies and determines the rate or speed at which chemical or physical processes
occur (Oliver,n.d.)(Jircitano, n.d.). The rate of reaction is the speed at which the reactant in a reaction
transforms into products or the change in concentration of a chemical species over the time taken for
that change to occur (Oliver,n.d.)(Jircitano, n.d.)(Mack, n.d.)(Blackburn,n.d.). Chemical reactions
occur at many different rates and in aqueous or equilibrium systems this rate is dependent on the
variables such as the reactivity of reagents, initial concentrations, temperature induced fluctuations
and any means of catalysis. (Oliver,n.d.)(Jircitano, n.d.)(Blackburn,n.d.). In order to measure rate the
change in concentration in a particular reaction must be determined as well as the time of which this
occurred. However studying the concentration at any time during a reaction is problematic since the
reaction must be stopped and a sample must be removed both which negatively affect accuracy. One
class of reactions that enables the change in concentration to be observed at a particular time is clock
reactions. Ina clock reaction an initial induction phase precedes a significant change in concentration
of a particular species. (Preece, King, Billingham, 1999). The rapid increase in concentration results in
significant effects such as dramatic color change. There are two types of clock reaction: 1. Induction
where as small concentration grows till it results in

A Report On The Free Piston Stirling
There are two types of Stirling engines to be considered the kinematic engine and the free piston
engine. Most of the military missions would use Lhe kinematic Stirling that produces mechanical
work directly; and this is the one that has received nearly all the development work to date. The free
piston Stirling is a sealed engine which uses a magnetized power piston to activate alternator coils
outside the pressure walls of the engine, thus producing an electrical output. This configuration avoids
the working fluid leakage problems associated with the moving seals in a kinematic engine, but may
be somewhat less efficient. GENERATOR SETS (MOBILE Electrical power) General Purpose Sets
There are a wide variety of military needs for portable gcneration of electric power to support
weapons systems, communications, housekeeping power, environmental control, and many other
functions. In order to avoid proliferation of makes, models, and sizes, a DoD Standard Family of
Mobile Electric Power Sets has been established from which all users of electric power in the field
must choose to support their system requirements. This family is shown in Table ES 2. It will be noted
that while the power range is 0.5 to 750 kilowatts (kw), the majority of sets are in the 1.5 to 60 kw
range, with the smaller end of the range (under 15 kw) being most numerous. With the exception of
the very small power range, all the engines used are commercially available diesel engines, and there

Ego Theory and Bundle Theory Essay
Intro to Philosophy
Ego Theory and Bundle Theory Derek Parfit s views on personal identity and the Ego and Bundle
Theory are all summarized in his article Divided Minds and the Nature of Persons . In his article,
Parfit explains the distinction between Ego theory and Bundle theory and provides several arguments
against Ego Theory. Although it proves to be very difficult to believe the Bundle Theory, Parfit s
critique is convincing and well thought out. In order to defend the Bundle Theory of personal identity
Parfit begins to describe it and differentiates it from Ego Theory. Parfit states that there are two
theories about what persons are or what a person s personal identity really is. According to Ego
Theory, each person has an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

your cells were replaced? Many would say if only 1% were replaced, the person would still be you but
at what percentage of cells is the new being no longer you? Parfit argues that the question is irrelevant
and that these are not here two different possibilities, one of which must be true. These are merely two
different descriptions of the very same course of events. To further support the bundle theory, Parfit
references split brain cases. A split brain case is what happens when the corpus callosum connecting
the two hemispheres of the brain is severed to some degree in order to treat severe epilepsy. A person
with a split brain shows to have two separate streams of consciousness. Ego Theory would argue that
there are two separate egos but only one person. When separating ego from person does Ego Theory
still hold valid? Parfit and the Bundle Theory state that this is an example of a different awareness of
events occurring at the same time, not different egos. According to Parfit there is no person involved.
Parfit s distinction between Ego theory and Bundle Theory and his arguments against Ego theory are
convincing. He uses many example to help support his claim. Both his thought experiment and the
split brain cases support the idea of bundle theory and disprove the more common Ego

derived mostly from a family of unique chemicals in the plant known as cannabinoids. Of the dozens
of cannabinoids in marijuana, simply one which is THC, is basically psychoactive. Most strenuous
chemicals in the plant have great therapeutic properties but do not bring euphoria. Many compounds,
specifically the cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) offset the psychoactive properties of THC. In 2010,
researchers at Harvard Medical School advocated that that some of the drug s benefits may actually be

Spinach Chromatography
The purpose of this experiment was to learn about the analytical method known as chromatography
which allows the separation of a mixture into its molecular components. In order to illustrate this
technique the pigments found in the leaves of spinach were separated by means of thin layer
chromatography (TLC). All chromatographic techniques have one principle in common; a liquid or
gaseous solution of sample, called the moving phase, is passed (moved) through an adsorbent, called a
stationary phase. With TLC the adsorbent of choice was one of the most common coatings, silica gel,
SiO2. This compound is polar, and therefore, is frequently used in the separation of polar substances
such as aldehydes, ketones, amines and carboxylic acids. On the other hand, a mixture of nonpolar
solvents (petroleum ether and cyclohexane) was used as the solvent. ... Show more content on

The pigments of fresh, frozen and canned spinach were extracted by grinding the mixture until
observing a powder looking appearance. The sand was used to destroy the cell walls of spinach and
free the pigments while any traces of water were being removed by the drying agent (MgSO4).
Following this, the mixtures were transferred to three labeled test tubes in which 2.0 mL of acetone
were added to each. The acetone washes the photopigments from the cells and cytoplasm. In this
manner, using a fixed speed vortex mixer, the mixture was shaken vigorously for 10 minutes. Upon
completion of mixing, the frozen and canned spinach displayed three distinctive layers, the bottom
layer containing sediments, the middle layer, a cloudy solution, and the top layer a homogeneous
green liquid. The ideal separation will have excluded the middle layer, which was a result of traces of
water present in the

Strategic Management for Travel and Tourism
Introduction After examining different theories of organizational strategy we were able to apply each
case to our company and work. We also learned that there are two dominant methodologies,
categorized as planned/analytical and emergent approaches. These strategies provide much knowledge
and advice as to how to improve our organization. However, it is important to remember that these
theories are not perfect. They do not encompass every organizational situation and there are a lot of
circumstantial assumptions made as well. In the following discussion we will analyze the advantages
and disadvantages between these strategic theories. In addition I will reflect on how these approaches
may be used in my own real world situation. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Real world application As Hines (2004) points out, real world strategies are neither purely planned nor
purely emergent. Realized strategies are a combination of both deliberate and emergent strategies
(pg.197). I see benefits in both approaches, with a mix being the most advantageous and appropriate in
my industry/work. Due to the nature of our products and market (games and technology) things are
constantly in flux. Having a degree of planning is necessary to provide focus and direction for the
strategy of my organization. This can also assist in the evaluation and analysis of the decision
performance. My organization commonly uses this deliberate strategy in many situations. Most
recently when we chose to diversify our product line by investing in and releasing games for the
mobile platform. Most dominant however, is the emergent strategy, which allows us sufficient
flexibity to learn and adapt to changes in our environment. Supported by other approaches, I believe
my organization can continue being successful. These other supports include what Stonehouse (2002)
calls a competitive positioning and resources/competence based strategy. The competitive positioning
approach emphasizes the importance of not only the environment but the need of analyzing your
business in the context of its industry. The last support outlet (resources/competence), focuses on the
competitive advantage of your business; what are the company specific resources and how

The Development of an Artificial Life based Software...
The behavior of a solution or a service can be analyzed by taking into account the interaction between
the components of the software. These interactions can be analyzed by developing a framework based
on Artificial Life. This calls for the development of an Artificial Life based Software Ecosystem
model. This paper proposes a framework using Artificial Life in the Software Ecosystem. In order to
find the gaps in the existing methodologies, extensive literature review has been carried out. It was
found that the interest in the topic has been on the increase and the advent of professional Ecosystems
has helped popularizing the phenomenon. However, the present framework do not use the data related
to evolution of the Software for later stages. The proposed methodology would pave way of Artificial
Life in Software Ecosystem.
1. INTRODUCTION A Software Ecosystem (SE) considers developers, clients, operating system,
underlying hardware and other peripheral components. A SE considers the concept of evolution of the
software in the same way as the evolution of a natural ecosystem. It has been pointed out by many
researchers that considering the system s evolution would lead to a better and comprehensive analysis
of the software which would ultimately help in management and development of new versions. The
point can be understood by the following analogy. If we consider that evolution of a human being,
then what humans have done in order to achieve, what they have been able to

Grease Research Paper
Men are rats, listen to me, they re fleas on rats, worse than that, they re amoebas on fleas on rats. I
mean, they re too low for even the dogs to bite. The only man a girl can depend on is her daddy.
(Direct Quote) This report is going to be all about Grease. We are going to describe the following; the
history, how it relates to the outsiders, plot, setting, the actors, and other important details. Grease is a
movie about love and friendship. It s funny, charming, and at times a bit inappropriate. Grease came
out on June 13, 1978. It was directed by Randal Kleiser, and produced by Paramount Pictures. Most of
the movie was filmed somewhere in California. Grease is an old movie, but people love it, and for that
reason Grease was the highest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What happens is that Danny and Sandy change their look for eachother. So Danny dresses all preppy
with a cardigan, which is Sandy s personality. Sandy shows up in her black leather pants and black
shirt, like how the gang dresses. They did this without knowing that each other were changing. It s
funny because Sandy tries to act like Danny, but she doesn t know how, so she s just really awkward
in that scene. Once Danny sees Sandy he throws off his cardigan, and they break into song. The movie
Grease relates to the Outsiders mainly because it was written in the same time frame. Grease had the
same sort of view as the Outsiders. There is Danny and his friends and Sandy and the Pink girls are
the more popular people. The other group of people is another group of popular people from another
school. In Grease, there are never any fights really, the only thing that ever happened between them
was the Drag race between the two groups at the end of the movie. Grease is overall a really good
movie, and has some good lessons. It tells you not to judge a person by their cover, and right away
think they won t fit in with your group. Lots of the time you just have to give them a chance and see
how they fit in. So don t say she looks to pure to be pink (direct quote) but rather give them a

Compare And Contrast The Ballad Of Birmingham By Dudley...
The topic that chosen was to compare the way a short story treats death with the way a poem reveals
death. The short story chosen was The Story of an hour by Kate Chopin and the poem chosen was
Ballad of Birmingham by Dudley Randall. They each have their own way of expressing the nature of
death.
The Story of an Hour treats death as a good thing, because Mrs. Mallard was excited when she
thought that her husband was killed in a train accident. When she abandoned herself a little whispered
word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under her breath: Free, free, free! (Kate
Chopin, P. 202). It was selfish for her to feel happy that her husband possibly died. But then when she
found out that he was not dead, she

Theme Of Literary Realism In A Dill Pickle
The world contains myriads of different people, therefore, it is not unlikely that some feel the need to
identify themselves with fictional characters. Fabricating characters can be perceived as the most
intricate part of writing because many consider characters to be the heart of pieces of literature.
Authors establish protagonists and antagonists in their works which gives them the ability to sway the
readers in the direction of who to root for. Many subconsciously discover themselves in fictional
characters, this allows them to enjoy their seemingly realistic read further. This is the use of literary
realism the authentic representation of literature realistically. Connecting with a character makes one
further immersed in their reading as they hope to understand more about not only the reader but
themselves. Relatable characters can be vital in literature as it makes the reader feel that their novel or
short story could actually take place. In Katherine Mansfield s short story, A Dill Pickle , a run in at a
cafe between two old lovers is filled with vacillation. Readers can feel themselves identify with the
protagonist, Vera, as she endures a well known uncomfortable situation. During the realization of lost
love, with the aid of literary realism, Mansfield depicts Vera as a relatable character to readers through
her personal thoughts, flashbacks, and her loneliness.
Literary realism is the incorporation of verisimilitude in literature. The utilization of using realistic
situations, people, and settings captivates readers as they can imagine or relate to the story and or the
characters. In addition, realism, which emphasizes the importance of the ordinary, the ordinary person
and the ordinary situation, tends to reject the heroic and the aristocratic and embrace the pedestrian,
the comic, and the middle class (Landow). Rather than writing novels with predictable and happy
endings as well as fantasies, works realism include subject matter that most can apply to everyday life.
After a six year hiatus between Vera and her unnamed past lover, a chance encounter takes place
causing pushed away feelings to be brought back to surface. Though Vera speaks scarcely, readers
understand her through her inner

Persuasive Essay On Saving Money
Saving money is an important part of your financial health. The more you save, the more you can feel
at ease whenever a rainy day might hit. You cannot predict the future but you can prepare for it. If you
prepare now, your future self will thank you. But how can you save if you have so many bills and only
one stream of income? Here are some tips you can use to rack up that account with a single income.
Try to make a budget, it will be your blueprint for your finances. The first step for anyone wanting to
take control of their finances is to make a budget. A budget will allow you to understand where your
money is going and enable you to adjust your spending by designating how much you can afford.
Creating a budget is a good idea for everyone, but especially for individuals with limited income.
Write down your budget, with specific categories of spending, and stick to it. Start slowly by using a
percentage on how much you will save versus spend. A plan doesn t work unless you work the plan.
Do not live a life that you cannot handle, spend within your means. Be honest with yourself, if you
can t afford something, don t buy it! Affordability is much more than the amount of money in your
bank account, it also is how long it will take for the money you spent to be back in your account.
Think of your finances as a long term process, not a short term fix. This is also why you should limit
your credit card usage. If you rack up your credit card and lose your sole source of income,

  • 2. Potential Of Microbial Fuel Cells Potential of Microbial Fuel Cells A microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a device that converts chemical energy to electrical energy by the catalytic and metabolic reactions of microorganisms. The microorganisms function as a catalyst in the electron transfer between the electrodes. A MFC is just like any other fuel cell in its function which can undergo a half cell reaction. A typical microbial fuel cell consists of anode and cathode compartments separated by a cation (positively charged ion) permitting specific membrane. At the anode, the organic matter or substrate is oxidized by microorganisms, generating CO2, electrons and protons. Electrons are transferred to the cathode through an external electric circuit, while protons are transferred to the cathode through the membrane. Electrons and protons react in the cathode, combining with oxygen to form water. A simple REDOX reaction takes place in the fuel cell. The rate of the reactions can depend on the internal resistance, bacteria, substrate, semi permeable membrane and electrode configuration. The basic reactions that occur when microorganisms consume a substrate such as sugar in the presence of O2 they produce CO2 and H2O. But, when oxygen is not present they produce CO2, H+ and e . At Anode, C12H22O11 +13H2O → 12CO2 + 48H+ + 48e− At Cathode, O2 + 4e− + 4H+ → 2H2O The applications of MFC s are that, they can be used for electricity generation, bio hydrogen production, wastewater treatment and bioremediation. • 3. Compare and Contrast the Chicago and Los Angeles Schools... Essay: Compare and Contrast the Chicago and Los Angeles Schools of Urbanism. Urban studies aims to develop an understanding the modern city metropolis. As Savage et al. have pointed out, the urban encompasses far more than just the physical city itself; understanding the city help us to understand many aspects of modern life (2003, pp.4). Many of its features, such as mass media and public transport systems have spread throughout society over the past century. Sociological studies of urban life began with the landmark publication of The City in 1925 by sociologists Robert Park, Ernest Burgess and Louis Wirth from the University of Chicago, students of Georg Simmel who shared his belief that the urban environment changed man s ... The Los Angeles school begins with quite different precepts, disputing the hypotheses of the Chicago School. They contend its orientation towards individuals as explaining the environment (for example the genius/criminal type creating vice and disorder (Park 1925, pp. 41)), its historical determinism and its view of the city as a cohesive, stable unit (Dear 2008, pp. 109). Its theoretical bases, rather than the structural, modernist paradigms of the Chicago School are postmodern, 21st century ones. For example Mike Davis, one of the leading thinkers of the LA school, cites Fredric Jameson s conception of postmodernity, with globalised, temporary forces producing uncertain outcomes (Davis 1998, pp. 84). Edward Soja, another sociologist of the LA school, has employed Foucault s post structuralist paradigm to explain some aspects of the postmodern city, for example he has likened the central downtown district of the city to a new panopticon , Foucault s conception of a form of total surveillance and control for the centre over the periphery. He suggests as a headquarters of space, knowledge and power with universal visibility throughout the city, it can supervise economic and social activity, and is able to surveil the surrounding city (Soja 1989, pp. 234 6). • 4. The Character Roster And The Author s Technique Chaucer s General Prologue: The Character Roster and The Author s Technique In the General Prologue of Geoffrey Chaucer s Canterbury Tales , readers are introduced to twenty nine pilgrims, who will, as a collective unit make their journey to St. Thomas Beckett. As the poet encounters each pilgrim on the voyage, his attention to detail is not focused solely on opinion or his own perspective of the individual, but the individual in every sense. His way of describing each character s traits, appearance and overall attitude is done so quite casually, on a first glance basis. There is a realness within the General Prologue that allows readers to visualize the described individual because they have their own identities, separating them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Placing this young solider under his father, demonstrates the power and rank that differs within the family and in the social order, yet the contrast of their intentions is not the only image the poet provides. In following the poet s pattern of appearance, readers see the Squire well dressed compared to his father, as fresh as is the month of May/ Short was his gown with sleeves long and wide (92 93). This attention to his appearance plays into this dedication to battle versus winning a woman s heart quite well, further reinforcing this contrast between father and son. While the two differ in their service to their Lord and their nobility, the representation of character continues as the poet describes the Prioress and the Monk, two differing religious figures within this journey. There was also a nun, a Prioress as the poet writes, her smiling was full simple and coy , she pledged her allegiance to the fashionable convent (118 119). The presentation of this character holds a double meaning in its way, as this woman s devotion is not solely focused on religion, but her appearance, it seems, as she has began this pilgrimage rather than remaining on holy land. In the image of her personal appearance, Chaucer attaches this sense of elegance that differs from her male counterparts. Readers are able to understand this different perspective of elegance in regards to the nun, who is not coated with makeup and jewels, but demonstrates elegance in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Fault In Our Stars Movie And Movie Analysis Novels are always better than films because they have more details than a film. While reading a novel the readers can imagine the scenes with details it gives. Meanwhile, in films, the reader doesn t get the whole effect on how a character feels. The Fault in Our Stars novel is better than the film itself. The Fault in Our Stars is a story of a young sixteen year old named Hazel Grace who is a survivor of cancer. Grace meets a young boy named Augustus Waters at the cancer support group. They fall in love. Grace feels like this boy understands her and have so much in common. Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace go to Amsterdam to meet Peter Van Houten. He is a famous author who wrote a novel called An Imperial Affliction, While Grace and Waters are at Amsterdam, they fall in love. They continue on going to dates and being with each other the most they could. Augustus knew he was going to die soon. He planned his funeral and dies days later. The Fault in Our Stars novel is different from the film. For example, in the novel, the author talks about how Hazel visits Isaac at the hospital often because his eye surgery, Hazel notices Augustus staring at her during the support group meeting, and Hazel drives to Augustus house to pick him up before their trip because she overhears him arguing with his mother The book The Fault in Our Stars is better than the movie because in the novel the author says Hazel does visit Isaac at the Hospital, Hazel notices Augustus staring at her during ... • 6. Dred Scott V. Sandford When Dred Scott v. Sandford was decided in 1857, it made an enormous impact on the United States. It riled up both pro and anti slavery Americans. It angered many Americans in an extreme example of judicial activism. Some say it made the Civil War inevitable. By the time the dust had settled and the 13th and 14th Amendments reversed the Court s decision, Dred Scott could be considered one of the worst Supreme Court decisions of all time. And yet, although the case was egregiously wrong, it still can be considered a great case . As Dred Scott exemplifies, a case does not have to be good in order to be great . Some of the most important great cases are also some of the most terrible cases. Our panel would thus prefer to call the cases that fit Mr. White s definition significant cases rather than great cases , because great generally implies a value judgment along with its judgment on significance, and in generalizing the idea of a significant case , value judgments are typically not consistent. There are significant cases that are great, and significant cases that are the opposite of great. Dred Scott is a significant case but not a great one. With that clarification in mind, the Dred Scott decision does fit Mr. White s definition of a significant case, at least in part. There are three main prongs of this definition, each of which applies to the Dred Scott case: first, a significant case asks the court to resolve a deeply contested issue; second, the court decides ... • 7. Defiance in Minorities of United States The spoils of hegemony spread through the American landscape in those ebullient years following World War II. The perks of empire building abroad translated into an uninterrupted period of economic growth and labor reforms that re calibrated the national consciousness and allowed, for the first time, the emergence of a middle class with sufficient autonomy and self awareness to exert political influence and correct the power imbalance that had characterized the first decades of the 20th century. This social Renaissance, however, had been distributed unevenly along racial lines, and no government of the time sought to redress the disparity between white economic advancement and the stagnant conditions imposed on social minorities, ossified as they were by decades of systematic subjugation before society and before the law. Discontent seethed beneath black communities, who felt increasingly isolated and persecuted by the same social institutions who had demanded so high a sacrifice during the second World War, a sacrifice summoned and re visited by the looming threat of a war with Vietnam. The landmark Brown vs. Board of Education was seen by many as a hollow victory, given the lethargic response of the Eisenhower administration to enforce the legislation, particularly in the Southern states where racial tensions, unaddressed by the larger cultural zeitgeist, had metamorphosed into open hostility and palpable contempt. A child is falling while being outside in unhealthy weather conditions. A child needs tender love and care in a safe environment, not a place outside in the wind. Customary interruption recognition frameworks are restricted and do not give a complete answer for the issue. They hunt down potential noxious exercises on system traffics; they once in a while succeed to discover genuine security assaults and oddities. Nonetheless, much of the time, they neglect to identify noxious practices (false negative) or they fire alerts when nothing incorrectly in the system (false positive). Moreover, they require comprehensive manual preparing and human master obstruction. We look down upon failure and defeat instead of seeing the raw potential it holds. If you feel hopeless when your goal isn t accomplished the way you wanted it to be, there is no need to worry: it s extremely natural to lose motivation when you re standing face to face with disappointment or negativity. This lesson of engineering phrases was taught to a group of eighteen kindergarten students at Bartlett Elementary on November 16, 2017. The entirety of this lesson lasted roughly forty five minutes. 2. How did the teacher introduce the lesson? Did the teacher specifically let the students know what they would know or be able to do by the end of the lesson? When introducing the lesson, the teacher Mrs. Taylor, started off by having the students recount what they had done in the previous class (which was one week before this lesson). Mrs. Taylor called on students who told her that last week they read the story, The Three Little Pigs, and that they built homes for their own pigs. Another student brought up the fact that they each worked as a team, with the students at their table, to build their homes. Mrs. Taylor then asked the students what where the three materials provided to build their homes. The students replied that two groups each got one of the materials which was straw, sticks, or bricks. Mrs. Taylor then passed out a worksheet to the students, asking them to grab a pencil and to write their names using the dotted lines, and top and bottom lines located at the top of the page. Then Mrs. Taylor had the students circle which of the materials that their group used to build their homes. To help the students remember, Mrs. Taylor walked over to a table and brought each group their houses, so that they would remember. Once the students circled their material, they then had to draw a picture of their home on the box located in the bottom left of the worksheet. While students were drawing, Mrs. Taylor walked around and was asking students about their homes (structures) and if they think they could stand up to the Big Bad Wolf. Once the majority of the students were done drawing their picture, Mrs. Taylor told the students what they would be doing next, which was that each group s home would go up against the Big Bad Wolf, which was just a higher powered electric fan. • 19. Literary Interpretation In The Storm By Kate Chopin The Storm by Kate Chopin The entire setting of the story The Storm by Kate Chopin is an accurate reflection of an adulterous situation. It employs the symbol The Storm to portray an exact circumstance that acknowledges the existence of unfaithfulness through adultery. The story took place in the period 1800s and gives a clear account of an affair that constituted Calixta who was the protective mother to Bibi and the wife to Bobinot, Alcee, the husband to Clarisse. The relationship among the people above took place at the prime time when there existed a violent rainstorm. As such, the depiction of the rainstorm does not give an account of a particular coincidence that occurred behind the whole scene but represents an external influence through which the proximity of the narration and the affair appeared simultaneously. The narrative begins with the storm occurrence, reaches its peak and ceases, so happens in paradox along with the relationship and the story. The whole scene is a true tale and a replication of a how females were sexually burdened in the 19th century period under the notion of male chauvinism and superiority. It also explicates women discovery of their rights and freedom over their body and relations. In that light, the story marks the end of female oppression and a transition for transformation on the female gender. René Lalique was born in 1860 and first began designing fine jewelry in Paris in 1881. Lalique pursued increasingly more innovative experimentation in glass commencing around 1883. Early works used the familiar lost wax technique by which the model is made in wax while a mold is formed around the model. Then, the wax is melted and molten glass is poured into the mold. Lalique glass was made in this manner until approximately 1905 at which time the factory was redesigned for a larger production. On the whole, Orrefors offered broad scope for experiment and innovation with new techniques being developed and older ones refined and this is still the case today. Success led to the arrival of new designers. The graphic artist Vicke Lindstrand came to Orrefors in 1928, and designed glass that was painted or engraved. Argumentative Essay On Role Playing Games Kids all across America play role playing games that involve shooting each other with water guns which sounds harmless and innocent but some people think different. A select hand of people think that kids and teenagers playing role playing games are violent and could lead the kids into a troubled future, but they really are just harmless. The reasons for why role playing games like senior assassin are harless are that it isn t real killing, it doesn t involve real guns, no one gets hurt, and that it is usually set up by the school that all of the students attend. But on the other hand the people that think that it is violent have no real evidence and only say things like someone could get hurt, but from what the water, and they also say that it involves weapons but that really doesn t mean anything. The evidence for why it is harmless is because there has never been a death or killing from playing those harmless games because there is nothing wrong with them. Others say that the game is very dangerous but there is no evidence for that, the only thing that they say is that it simulates violence but there is really nothing violent about it, besides that the game is just fun. Although the relationship between the two managers seemed to go well in the beginning, it quickly turned around over their business dinner. It is in the Chinese culture to give a gift to their guest; the Chinese director politely offered to eat a turtle to the German manager to show his respect. The German manager refused it, as this seemed weird and unusual to him. This is where the problem happened. The reaction of both parties was wrong. At first, it is an obsession that is almost pathological; by the end, it is an aid to his relationships and his idea of who he is. Thus Rob is defined by music and women he dates rather than through his own eyes. One gets a better idea of this when Rob and Laura are arguing and Laura says she doesn t like music as much as she used to. Rob says, But you see... That s all there is of me. The pathological aspect of this is that part of the reason he is attracted to her is that he has always wanted to sleep with a musician. Two of the main characters, Donald Farfrae and Michael Henchard have a contrast in luck and Hardy uses characterisation, language, historical and social background and a craft in the structure of his novel to help bring across this point. During this essay I am going to comment upon how Hardy does this and further consider the view that, Farfrae s good fortune is a result of Henchard s ill luck. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both of these types of characterisation link in with Farfrae s good fortune and Henchard s ill luck. Hardy creates Henchard not as an evil man but more of tragic hero. This is a person with a fatal flaw. Henchard s main flaw is his temper. This first adds to his ill luck right at the start of the novel when he sells Susan and his daughter in a drunken angry state. Even though this does not directly link in with Farfrae s good fortune (as he is not present in the start of the novel) it does later on in the novel when the furmity seller arrives back and tells the court of Henchard s secret. When Henchard admits to what is being said by the old women all respect is lost for him and he looses his role of town mayor. When Farfrae finally becomes mayor near the end of the novel (after the mayor after Henchard dies) his good fortune is a result of Henchard s ill luck which is the result of his fatal flaw. Hardy also uses fate against Henchard throughout the whole novel. An example of this is when Henchard and Farfrae both hold a dance for the townspeople. • 36. The Importance Of Chemical Kinetics Chemical kinetics studies and determines the rate or speed at which chemical or physical processes occur (Oliver,n.d.)(Jircitano, n.d.). The rate of reaction is the speed at which the reactant in a reaction transforms into products or the change in concentration of a chemical species over the time taken for that change to occur (Oliver,n.d.)(Jircitano, n.d.)(Mack, n.d.)(Blackburn,n.d.). Chemical reactions occur at many different rates and in aqueous or equilibrium systems this rate is dependent on the variables such as the reactivity of reagents, initial concentrations, temperature induced fluctuations and any means of catalysis. (Oliver,n.d.)(Jircitano, n.d.)(Blackburn,n.d.). In order to measure rate the change in concentration in a particular reaction must be determined as well as the time of which this occurred. However studying the concentration at any time during a reaction is problematic since the reaction must be stopped and a sample must be removed both which negatively affect accuracy. One class of reactions that enables the change in concentration to be observed at a particular time is clock reactions. Ina clock reaction an initial induction phase precedes a significant change in concentration of a particular species. (Preece, King, Billingham, 1999). The rapid increase in concentration results in significant effects such as dramatic color change. There are two types of clock reaction: 1. Although it proves to be very difficult to believe the Bundle Theory, Parfit s critique is convincing and well thought out. In order to defend the Bundle Theory of personal identity Parfit begins to describe it and differentiates it from Ego Theory. Parfit states that there are two theories about what persons are or what a person s personal identity really is. According to Ego Theory, each person has an ... Many would say if only 1% were replaced, the person would still be you but at what percentage of cells is the new being no longer you? Parfit argues that the question is irrelevant and that these are not here two different possibilities, one of which must be true. These are merely two different descriptions of the very same course of events. To further support the bundle theory, Parfit references split brain cases. A split brain case is what happens when the corpus callosum connecting the two hemispheres of the brain is severed to some degree in order to treat severe epilepsy. A person with a split brain shows to have two separate streams of consciousness. Ego Theory would argue that there are two separate egos but only one person. When separating ego from person does Ego Theory still hold valid? Parfit and the Bundle Theory state that this is an example of a different awareness of events occurring at the same time, not different egos. According to Parfit there is no person involved. Parfit s distinction between Ego theory and Bundle Theory and his arguments against Ego theory are convincing. He uses many example to help support his claim. Both his thought experiment and the split brain cases support the idea of bundle theory and disprove the more common Ego ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Therapeutic Effects And Healing Abilities Of The Drug That... People tend to over exaggerate the harmful effect of marijuana, some say marijuana is wrong in many ways, including brain damage, damage to the reproductive system, and weakening of the immune system. In addition people say that marijuana is a gateway drug that leads the users to try much harder drugs. This is not always the case all the time however. We now know significantly more about cannabis than most substances we eat or pharmaceutical medications we intake. Based on my research there are many therapeutic effects and healing abilities of the drug that help with disease and mental illness. People have developed and used marijuana for all intents and purposes since the start of written history. Cannabis based materials dating to 7,000 B.C.E. have been recuperated in northern China, and the plant s utilization as a therapeutic and euphoric specialists go back about as far. The physical, therapeutic, and psychoactive effects a person experiences after ingesting marijuana are derived mostly from a family of unique chemicals in the plant known as cannabinoids. Of the dozens of cannabinoids in marijuana, simply one which is THC, is basically psychoactive. Most strenuous chemicals in the plant have great therapeutic properties but do not bring euphoria. Many compounds, specifically the cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) offset the psychoactive properties of THC. In 2010, researchers at Harvard Medical School advocated that that some of the drug s benefits may actually be from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Spinach Chromatography The purpose of this experiment was to learn about the analytical method known as chromatography which allows the separation of a mixture into its molecular components. In order to illustrate this technique the pigments found in the leaves of spinach were separated by means of thin layer chromatography (TLC). All chromatographic techniques have one principle in common; a liquid or gaseous solution of sample, called the moving phase, is passed (moved) through an adsorbent, called a stationary phase. With TLC the adsorbent of choice was one of the most common coatings, silica gel, SiO2. This compound is polar, and therefore, is frequently used in the separation of polar substances such as aldehydes, ketones, amines and carboxylic acids. On the other hand, a mixture of nonpolar solvents (petroleum ether and cyclohexane) was used as the solvent. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The pigments of fresh, frozen and canned spinach were extracted by grinding the mixture until observing a powder looking appearance. The sand was used to destroy the cell walls of spinach and free the pigments while any traces of water were being removed by the drying agent (MgSO4). Following this, the mixtures were transferred to three labeled test tubes in which 2.0 mL of acetone were added to each. The acetone washes the photopigments from the cells and cytoplasm. In this manner, using a fixed speed vortex mixer, the mixture was shaken vigorously for 10 minutes. Upon completion of mixing, the frozen and canned spinach displayed three distinctive layers, the bottom layer containing sediments, the middle layer, a cloudy solution, and the top layer a homogeneous green liquid. The ideal separation will have excluded the middle layer, which was a result of traces of water present in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Strategic Management for Travel and Tourism Introduction After examining different theories of organizational strategy we were able to apply each case to our company and work. We also learned that there are two dominant methodologies, categorized as planned/analytical and emergent approaches. These strategies provide much knowledge and advice as to how to improve our organization. However, it is important to remember that these theories are not perfect. They do not encompass every organizational situation and there are a lot of circumstantial assumptions made as well. In the following discussion we will analyze the advantages and disadvantages between these strategic theories. In addition I will reflect on how these approaches may be used in my own real world situation. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Real world application As Hines (2004) points out, real world strategies are neither purely planned nor purely emergent. Realized strategies are a combination of both deliberate and emergent strategies (pg.197). I see benefits in both approaches, with a mix being the most advantageous and appropriate in my industry/work. Due to the nature of our products and market (games and technology) things are constantly in flux. Having a degree of planning is necessary to provide focus and direction for the strategy of my organization. This can also assist in the evaluation and analysis of the decision performance. My organization commonly uses this deliberate strategy in many situations. Most recently when we chose to diversify our product line by investing in and releasing games for the mobile platform. Most dominant however, is the emergent strategy, which allows us sufficient flexibity to learn and adapt to changes in our environment. Supported by other approaches, I believe my organization can continue being successful. These other supports include what Stonehouse (2002) calls a competitive positioning and resources/competence based strategy. The competitive positioning approach emphasizes the importance of not only the environment but the need of analyzing your business in the context of its industry. The last support outlet (resources/competence), focuses on the competitive advantage of your business; what are the company specific resources and how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. The Development of an Artificial Life based Software... The behavior of a solution or a service can be analyzed by taking into account the interaction between the components of the software. These interactions can be analyzed by developing a framework based on Artificial Life. This calls for the development of an Artificial Life based Software Ecosystem model. This paper proposes a framework using Artificial Life in the Software Ecosystem. In order to find the gaps in the existing methodologies, extensive literature review has been carried out. It was found that the interest in the topic has been on the increase and the advent of professional Ecosystems has helped popularizing the phenomenon. However, the present framework do not use the data related to evolution of the Software for later stages. The proposed methodology would pave way of Artificial Life in Software Ecosystem. 1. INTRODUCTION A Software Ecosystem (SE) considers developers, clients, operating system, underlying hardware and other peripheral components. A SE considers the concept of evolution of the software in the same way as the evolution of a natural ecosystem. It has been pointed out by many researchers that considering the system s evolution would lead to a better and comprehensive analysis of the software which would ultimately help in management and development of new versions. The point can be understood by the following analogy. If we consider that evolution of a human being, then what humans have done in order to achieve, what they have been able to ... Once Danny sees Sandy he throws off his cardigan, and they break into song. The movie Grease relates to the Outsiders mainly because it was written in the same time frame. The Story of an Hour treats death as a good thing, because Mrs. Mallard was excited when she thought that her husband was killed in a train accident. When she abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under her breath: Free, free, free! (Kate Chopin, P. 202). • 45. Theme Of Literary Realism In A Dill Pickle The world contains myriads of different people, therefore, it is not unlikely that some feel the need to identify themselves with fictional characters. Fabricating characters can be perceived as the most intricate part of writing because many consider characters to be the heart of pieces of literature. Authors establish protagonists and antagonists in their works which gives them the ability to sway the readers in the direction of who to root for. Many subconsciously discover themselves in fictional characters, this allows them to enjoy their seemingly realistic read further. This is the use of literary realism the authentic representation of literature realistically. Connecting with a character makes one further immersed in their reading as they hope to understand more about not only the reader but themselves. Relatable characters can be vital in literature as it makes the reader feel that their novel or short story could actually take place. In Katherine Mansfield s short story, A Dill Pickle , a run in at a cafe between two old lovers is filled with vacillation. Readers can feel themselves identify with the protagonist, Vera, as she endures a well known uncomfortable situation. During the realization of lost love, with the aid of literary realism, Mansfield depicts Vera as a relatable character to readers through her personal thoughts, flashbacks, and her loneliness. Literary realism is the incorporation of verisimilitude in literature. The utilization of using realistic situations, people, and settings captivates readers as they can imagine or relate to the story and or the characters. In addition, realism, which emphasizes the importance of the ordinary, the ordinary person and the ordinary situation, tends to reject the heroic and the aristocratic and embrace the pedestrian, the comic, and the middle class (Landow). Rather than writing novels with predictable and happy endings as well as fantasies, works realism include subject matter that most can apply to everyday life. After a six year hiatus between Vera and her unnamed past lover, a chance encounter takes place causing pushed away feelings to be brought back to surface. You cannot predict the future but you can prepare for it. If you prepare now, your future self will thank you. But how can you save if you have so many bills and only one stream of income? Here are some tips you can use to rack up that account with a single income. Try to make a budget, it will be your blueprint for your finances. The first step for anyone wanting to take control of their finances is to make a budget. A budget will allow you to understand where your money is going and enable you to adjust your spending by designating how much you can afford. Creating a budget is a good idea for everyone, but especially for individuals with limited income. Write down your budget, with specific categories of spending, and stick to it. Start slowly by using a percentage on how much you will save versus spend. A plan doesn t work unless you work the plan. Do not live a life that you cannot handle, spend within your means. Be honest with yourself, if you can t afford something, don t buy it! Affordability is much more than the amount of money in your bank account, it also is how long it will take for the money you spent to be back in your account. Think of your finances as a long term process, not a short term fix. This is also why you should limit your credit card usage. If you rack up your credit card and lose your sole source of income, ...
