5. Human Resource
Humans cannot be managed in a way as
other resources can be, because they are
sentient beings and hence the need arises
to study as to what actually excites them.
And here is where the concept of
Motivation comes into place.
7. Motivation - Meaning
Motivation is a transitive form of the noun,
motive.
Motive is derived from the Latin word, move’re ,
meaning, to move.
Motivation is the act or process by which the
needs and desires of a person move him towards
some action.
8. Motivation - Traditional Approach
Motivation is not a new concept.
It has been practiced from time immemorial
albeit, in a different manner.
The traditional approach to Motivation is called,
”Carrot and Stick” approach, where an employee
is offered with reward (Salary) for his
performance and punished for non-performance.
9. Motivation – Modern Approach
Modern Approach to motivation is based on
identifying the various needs and wants of
an employee and subsequently using them
as a means of the driving force behind an
employee’s actions that will in turn have a
bearing on the Organisation’s goals as a
whole.
10. Motivation - Definition
Motivation is defined as the “processes
that account for an individual’s intensity,
direction and persistence of efforts
towards attaining a goal”.

A Psychological concept.
It is total and not piece-meal.
It may be financial or non–financial.
It may be positive or negative.
It is a continuous process.
It is need based.
It differs from one person to another.
It is a complex process.
