The document discusses how to embed a librarian and library resources in the Moodle learning management system (LMS). It defines embedded librarianship and its benefits. Research shows students struggle with coursework research and need guidance. The document recommends collaborating with Moodle administrators and instructors to add librarian roles and embed library widgets, forums, tutorials and other resources directly in Moodle courses to provide point-of-need research help for students. It provides step-by-step instructions for common embedding methods.
In the recent past, Resource sharing concept has become prime factor and playing vital role in
libraries because of innovative developments in Information, Communication and Technology
(ICT). ICT has made easy to establish networks among libraries and share their information
resources quickly and instantly. Resource sharing has become prime reason for establishing
cooperation between libraries without any geographical barriers. The various reasons for resource
sharing are might be cost benefits, non-availability of resources, insufficient library funds, lack of
skills etc. In this paper, the attempt has been made to understand the various aspects of resource
sharing in modern library technological environment.

Challenges and opportunities for academic librarieslisld
Research and learning behaviors are changing in a network environment. What challenges do Academic libraries face? What opportunities do they have? A presentation given at a symposium on the future of academic libraries at the Open University.
It is interesting to me that Aristotle, the one who developed realism, was the student of the one who developed realism’s opposite philosophy, which is idealism. Realism, which is a philosophy that asserts that objects around us are real even if they are not perceived by us, makes much more sense to me than idealism.
The philosophy of realism, especially theistic realism, can be seen in my belief that God is not merely an idea but is an objective reality. Like Thomas Aquinas, I believe that there is no conflict between faith and reason and between religion and science. I love reading works of Christian scientists who prove this and it really helps me with my faith. Such works have great impact in my life.
Library and Information Science Education for the 21st Century / Lyn Robinson Infodays
This presentation will consider the recent development of library and information science as an academic discipline, and the consequent changes required to library school curricula, in order to prepare professional practitioners for employment in today’s information society. These changes, led primarily by technological developments, include the need for consideration of new forms of documents, new methods of dissemination, new information behaviour patterns and increasing demand for novel information architectures. Alongside changes in technology, we can see the emergence of overlap with companion disciplines such as the digital humanities, and these must be accommodated, alongside more obvious connections, such as those with computer science. In conclusion from all of this, we can see that a course focused solely on traditional workplace skills will be insufficient for today’s portfolio-based workforce. We must have an emphasis on thinking skills, new literacies, and resilience, so that we prepare our graduates for employment beyond their first position.

The University of Hertfordshire (UH) implemented a new
commercial Resource Discovery Service at the same time as it
changed to the Koha Open Source Library Management System. In doing so it moved away from using Google Scholar, as its main platform, at a time when many universities are deciding to only use Google Scholar. Hear about the debate between commercial and non-commercial services and why UH made the decisions it did. After 18 months was it the right decision? What has been the impact on library services and library users?
Moodle: using an open learning management system to support student learningKeith Landa
2010 SUNY Freedonia Teaching and Learning conference - "Universal Design for Learning: Accessible and Assistive Technologies to Enhance Student Learning"
Session description: Over the past 18 months, Purchase College has migrated from Blackboard to Moodle for our campus learning management system. Our decision was partially driven by the lower total costs for Moodle as an open source product and our desire to avoid the risks and lack of control associated with commercial applications. Our primary consideration however was that Moodle provides a pedagogically stronger learning platform, and its openness allows us to integrate it with other learning applications that faculty would like to use to promote student engagement.
This session will focus on the pedagogical aspects of Moodle as a learning platform. We will briefly discuss the process and findings Purchase College used to develop a consensus among faculty, students and technology staff to switch to Moodle. Participants will then spend the bulk of the session in a directed exploration of the diverse learning activities in Moodle that promote student engagement and learning, to facilitate discussion of how Moodle compares to ANGEL and Blackboard. We will examine examples of how Moodle’s open architecture allows it to integrate with external Web 2.0 applications, and finally discuss options for no-cost hosted Moodle solutions that will allow participants to evaluate Moodle for their campuses.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

Editor's Notes
Librarian embedded in an LMS connects and interacts with students to facilitate their research process and also to encourage use of library resources and services. We can create and manage library-related discussion board threads; post relevant links to course-related resources, databases, e-books and information literacy tutorials. Using discussion boards, we can post content or upload files that explain the research process from topic selection through citing sources, sending announcements of research techniques to help students solve their current information problems (Burke, J. & Tumbleson, B., 2011).
PIL Information Scientists from iSchool, University of Washington. It is a large-scale study about early adults and their research habits. Since 2008 PIL studied over 11,000 students from 41 US campuses. PIL report, 2010 8, 353 students in the sample from 25 US campuses. How competent students are with Course-related research and Everyday life research. Research assignments are a mainstay of college curricula; topics may vary, but assignments consistently require inquiry, argument and evidence.
In the era of information overload, evaluating skills are imperative for assessing the quality of information before its use. Here arises the need for a librarian who can guide students through researching information in an effective and ethical manner. Library staff in collaboration with the faculty need to design course-related assignments and decide on the assessment criteria for evaluating research skills, in addition to identifying course-specific library resources. It may be quick and easy to find information today but finding credible and relevant information is harder than ever. Students need to conduct comprehensive research that promotes deep learning and innovative ideas.
Most handouts emphasized the mechanics of preparing assignments ; more than substantive details about finding, evaluating and using research resources in an ethical manner. Here comes the need for a librarian who can guide students through researching information in an effective and ethical manner.
An exploratory study on “ "How College Students Manage Technology While in the Library during Crunch Time: the final weeks of the term ” a relatively small sample (n=560) of students enrolled at 10 colleges and universities across the US. These findings are based on data collected from observation and interviews. Almost 1 student in 10 (9%) had a learning management system (LMS) up and running on his or her primary device. Nearly all of the respondents (99%) reported they were using an LMS for coursework at the time of the interview. http://projectinfolit.org/pdfs/PIL_Fall2011_TechStudy_FullReport1.1.pdf
(Ethnographic Research in Illinois Academic Libraries (ERIAL) project, 2011) (need to embed tutorials on how to use library tools and services) – improved access to library resources from within Moodle courses Most students, even those sitting in the library, do not use its reference resources. Faculty who incorporate research components in their courses need to collaborate with the library staff to create research assignments (while devising course syllabus) and to make librarian as an integral part of course management. A co-developed assignment can help better align student’s learning experience with the course learning outcomes, while saving faculty time and effort for other teaching activities. exchanges with librarians or online by using services such as “Ask a Librarian.” (ERIAL) project with studies conducted on five Illinois campuses found students rarely asked for help from librarians, especially students who may have been in the greatest need of help. See College Libraries and Student Culture: What We Now Know (2011). Lynda M. Duke and Andrew D. Asher, editors at http://www.erialproject.org/publications/ala-project/ (accessed August 30, 2011). Students seek help for finding relevant and credible information and what are the new ways of finding, using, processing, and communicating information using new technologies and tools.. They also need help in managing and making the best use of their digital tools. For example, how does one take and manage notes in an electronic, online environment?
To help students conceptualize and operationalize course-related research (PIL) (collecting and substantiating information from existing primary and secondary sources for research papers and presentations, by avoiding plagiarism) To direct students to (library guides, databases identified in collaboration with the faculty) within an LMS. To promote Information Literacy engage students in independent research and critical evaluation fosters lifelong learning (independent research and critical evaluation Steering students through research allows them to learn how to do research independently and critically beyond the classroom ). IL is everybody’s responsibility so involve all stakeholders to make students competent with Course-related research and Everyday life research
Collaboration with Moodle Administrator and Instructors enables library staff connect with the students and provide point-of-need service. Admin collaboration is required at Site level and collaboration with instructors required at Course Level. Admin creates a Moodle role for library staff and help in embedding library resources and services. Collaborating with the instructors provides scope not only for designing research-oriented course assignments but also for evaluating student’s research skills.
API – Application Programming Interface (sticky blocks, learning resources etc.). JS – Java Scripting. Giving librarian access to Moodle courses can be helpful for students in many ways. Librarian can recommend (i) search strategies, how to evaluate and cite information (ii) Share his/her research expertise in class discussions (iii) Answer students' questions related to Library and information research.
Library widgets (HTML Block) may include Ask-A-Librarian, Library Guides, Library Catalogue, Bibliography Maker, customized search engines.
Moodle Administrator can add and define a role. Moodle comes with 6 pre-defined roles: Administrator, Course creator, Teacher, Non-editing teacher, Student, and Guest. Some university add Teaching Assistant role to a librarian.
Instructors can assign the Librarian role to the library staff within a course. Once library staff are added to a course, they can manage library and research related resources, forums, widgets, blocks within a course. And also can assess student’s research skills in collaboration with the course instructors.
We can manage some of these modules; but some require help from Moodle Administrator. say for example downloading blocks such as Learning Resources and configuring resources – to embed a file or web resource in a frame etcetera.
Creating Ask A Librarian forum lets the students to know there is a librarian in the course to guide them through their research process. Librarian posts a welcome message, providing instructions on how to use this forum, course-specific resources and Information Literacy Tutorials from within Moodle. Instructors can direct students to Ask A Librarian Forum, while giving instructions about assignments. Students are encouraged to post their library resources and research related questions on the Librarian forum so that all students can benefit from librarians responses to the questions posted.
Widgets (also known as gadgets) are Web objects or applications that contain dynamic content, which can be easily embedded onto a Web site or into Blackboard or Moodle/LMS. Overall growth in searches of libraries that have widgets = 60%. http://access.gale.com/widgets/
To embed widgets we need to add a HTML block and configure it. Click on edit (hand) icon to configure HTML blocks.
Click on edit (hand) icon to configure HTML blocks. Enter a title, toggle HTML and embed code for Ask-A-Librarian, Library catalogue, Library guides, Library databases, Citation maker etc.
API and Java Scripting skills are required for embedding library guides. Seek guidance from in-house Web/IT people for help adding & editing library tools and services widgets in Moodle courses. IM/Chat widget University Libraries use Question Point chat widgets http://www.oclc.org/questionpoint/default.htm. Alternatively, w e can embed MeeboMe Chat Widget on Moodle course pages. Next slide> How to add and customize Library Catalogue
Step 1: Example: https://catalyst.library.jhu.edu/ (John Hopkins Library) & San José State University Library. John Hopkins university has 4 search fields – Title, author, subject and numbers. And San Jose University Library has 8 search fields – Keyword, Title, Author, Subject Heading, Journal Title, DDC call no. LC call no., ISBN/ISSN. Customize code before pasting in the HTML block to modify its appearance – background color, text to be added (instructions to students), font size and color etc. (Take the help of Moodle Admin/IT dept.)
API - A pplication programming interface ( API ) is a particular set of rules ('code') which facilitates communication and interaction. API code and Java Scripting are required to embed library guides in Moodle (so take the help of Moodle Admin/IT dept of your university). Source: http://lanecc.libguides.com
University Libraries use Question Point chat widgets http://www.oclc.org/questionpoint/default.htm. Alternatively, w e can embed MeeboMe Chat Widget on Moodle course pages. Follow these steps and check whether Chat widget is available and accessible for students. http://wiki.meebo.com/doku.php?id=meebome
Ask Moodle admin to download Learning Resources Block from Moodle site. Learning Resources block is configured initially via Moodle Site Administration >> Blocks. Links are added/edited by the administrator. Using this block we can add generic online resources. Certain links e.g. the Library catalogue search may be shown in all courses by default . Or course-specific resources. Additional text e.g. a message stating that a resource is available within College only may be added below each link. Library Staff/Instructors may then configure the block within their course to display course-specific links. You can use simply HTML block to add resources relevant to a course instead of Learning Resources block. Learning Resources Block http://moodle.org/mod/data/view.php?d=13&rid=361
Database search widgets help bring library resources to the LMS/sites students use the most. But we need to authenticate with the Proxy prefix of our institution to create search widgets of a database. When a user is off campus, s/he will be sent to a login screen, and after authenticating will be sent to search results. When a user is on campus, s/he will be sent directly to search results. Contact your IT dept. for proxy prefix , which allows off-campus use of search widgets. http://www.ebscohost.com/academic/search-box-builder http://www.proquest.co.uk/en-UK/support/training/materials.shtml CSA Illumina http://www.csa.com/ http://csadb101.csa.com/ids70/admin_profile.php
