Solution
The Production Cycle
Within the four stages of the design workflow there are two distinct parts.
The first three stages, as presented in Part B of this book, were described
as ‘The Hidden Thinking’ stages, as they are concerned with undertaking
the crucial behind-the-scenes preparatory work. You may have completed
them in terms of working through the book’s contents, but in visualisation
projects they will continue to command your attention, even if that is
reduced to a background concern.
You have now reached the second distinct part of the workflow which
involves developing your design solution. This stage follows a production
cycle, commencing with rationalising design ideas and moving through to
the development of a final solution.
The term cycle is appropriate to describe this stage as there are many loops
of iteration as you evolve rapidly between conceptual, practical and
technical thinking. The inevitability of this iterative cycle is, in large part,
again due to the nature of this pursuit being more about optimisation rather
than an expectation of achieving that elusive notion of perfection. Trade-
offs, compromises, and restrictions are omnipresent as you juggle ambition
and necessary pragmatism.
How you undertake this stage will differ considerably depending on the
nature of your task. The creation of a relatively simple, single chart to be
slotted into a report probably will not require the same rigour of a formal
production cycle that the development of a vast interactive visualisation to
be used by the public would demand. This is merely an outline of the most
you will need to do – you should edit, adapt and participate the steps to fit
with your context.
There are several discrete steps involved in this production cycle:
Conceiving ideas across the five layers of visualisation design.
Wireframing and storyboarding designs.
Developing prototypes or mock-up versions.

Testing.
Refining and completing.
Launching the solution.
Naturally, the specific approach for developing your design solution (from
prototyping through to launching) will vary hugely, depending particularly
on your skills and resources: it might be an Excel chart, or a Tableau
dashboard, an infographic created using Adobe Illustrator, or a web-based
interactive built with the D3.js library. As I have explained in the book’s
introduction, I’m not going to attempt to cover the myriad ways of
implementing a solution; that would be impossible to achieve as each task
and tool would require different instructions.
For the scope of this book, I am focusing on taking you through the first
two steps of this cycle – conceiving ideas and wireframing/storyboarding.
There are parallels here with the distinctions between architecture (design)
and engineering (execution) – I’m effectively chaperoning you through to
the conclusion of your design thinking.

Web Design Process - Tips & Guidelines
Your process book should document your creative process for a web design project from start to finish. It should include inspiration, wireframes, page designs, testing across browsers, and any issues identified. The process book helps clients understand and get excited about your ideas for their project before any coding begins. Presenting multiple unique concepts and fully designing sample home and interior pages are important parts of demonstrating your ideas visually and getting client approval before proceeding.

Solution
The Production Cycle
Within the four stages of the design workflow there are two distinct parts.
The first three stages, as presented in Part B of this book, were described
as ‘The Hidden Thinking’ stages, as they are concerned with undertaking
the crucial behind-the-scenes preparatory work. You may have completed
them in terms of working through the book’s contents, but in visualisation
projects they will continue to command your attention, even if that is
reduced to a background concern.
You have now reached the second distinct part of the workflow which
involves developing your design solution. This stage follows a production
cycle, commencing with rationalising design ideas and moving through to
the development of a final solution.
The term cycle is appropriate to describe this stage as there are many loops
of iteration as you evolve rapidly between conceptual, practical and
technical thinking. The inevitability of this iterative cycle is, in large part,
again due to the nature of this pursuit being more about optimisation rather
than an expectation of achieving that elusive notion of perfection. Trade-
offs, compromises, and restrictions are omnipresent as you juggle ambition
and necessary pragmatism.
How you undertake this stage will differ considerably depending on the
nature of your task. The creation of a relatively simple, single chart to be
slotted into a report probably will not require the same rigour of a formal
production cycle that the development of a vast interactive visualisation to
be used by the public would demand. This is merely an outline of the most
you will need to do – you should edit, adapt and participate the steps to fit
with your context.
There are several discrete steps involved in this production cycle:
Conceiving ideas across the five layers of visualisation design.
Wireframing and storyboarding designs.
Developing prototypes or mock-up versions.

Refining and completing.
Launching the solution.
Naturally, the specific approach for developing your design solution (from
prototyping through to launching) will vary hugely, depending particularly
on your skills and resources: it might be an Excel chart, or a Tableau
dashboard, an infographic created using Adobe Illustrator, or a web-based
interactive built with the D3.js library. As I have explained in the book’s
introduction, I’m not going to attempt to cover the myriad ways of
implementing a solution; that would be impossible to achieve as each task
and tool would require different instructions.
For the scope of this book, I am focusing on taking you through the first
two steps of this cycle – conceiving ideas and wireframing/storyboarding.
There are parallels here with the distinctions between architecture (design)
and engineering (execution) – I’m effectively chaperoning you through to
the conclusion of your design thinking.

If a student does not have access to a viable project to use for this capstone, then any one of the
ideas below may be used. Please note that students are meant to take these ideas and build upon
them. Each student is to take the idea and come up with his or her own full project scope and
boundaries.
1) A new CEO has arrived. She believes that the current company structure is ineffective. You
are to be the project manager who leads her executive team in a company-wide reorganization.
This reorganization includes some work to determine how the new structure will be identified,
the work to gain support for this new structure at the executive level, the communications about
the new structure to the entire company and a transition plan to take the company from the
current structure to the new one.
2) Your company is celebrating 50 years in business. The executive team would like to take an
opportunity to recognize this milestone. Their purpose is to reward employees, build morale and
also let customers; future customers and competitors know about the longevity of the company
and adopt a ‘we are here to stay’ type of campaign. This milestone is definitely a marketing
event. The celebration should include customers and employees. Definitely there should be a big
celebration, but the executive team wants more than that. They want events and announcements
and campaigns going throughout the entire year. You will project manage this effort.
3) You have joined a start up company whose goal is to create an iPhone knockoff or copy. The
idea is to out ‘iPhone’ the iPhone, but at 50% of the cost to the customer. You are the project
manager of the team who will identify what features will go into this iPhone copy, determine
how to manufacture the phones for less than the real iPhone and determine how to market this
new copy. The project ends once the idea has either been abandoned or the new copy phone has
been available for sale for 45 days..............

- 300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute from users in 75 countries speaking 61 languages.
- 60% of a creator's views come from outside their home country, and half of all YouTube views are on mobile devices.
Wikinomics and soundcloud
Soundcloud is a platform that allows users to democratically upload and access music, enabling ordinary people to contribute their content and listeners to access music for free. It serves as an example of democracy in action as unsigned artists can share their music and gain exposure, such as Ry Legit whose song received over 88,000 listens. However, Soundcloud is only a weak example of a sharing economy since it is difficult for independent artists to directly earn money from the site unless they promote other revenue streams like iTunes downloads or merchandise.
Wikinomics the big ideas
Crowdsourcing platforms allow for free creativity, democracy, and global collaboration. Soundcloud lets users freely upload and remix songs. YouTube gives any user a voice to share videos, which can launch ordinary people to fame if their content goes viral. Kickstarter enables funding of projects from around the world. Spotify combines social sharing, subscriptions, and a large young user base in a "perfect storm" of elements.

Mock ups and flat plans
- 1. Flat plans / Mock-ups Flat plans are drawings of a page layout that show where the different text, picture and graphic elements will go on a page. Flat plans give designers the chance to experiment with a wide variety of different layouts quickly and easily, before coming to a final decision on page layout. They will allow you to experiment and try and find a layout you are happy with before going into production. This helps to cut down on production time and leads to a product which has been clearly thought out.

- 6. Getting good marks In order to gain high marks you must show that you have drafted a range of ideas. One single idea will not get high marks You need to present your work clearly and neatly. Badly presented work will not get high marks You need to make sure you manage you time well, so that you hit your deadlines and you produce a good range of work Work on layouts, drafting, scripting or storyboarding. - 7. Over to you Now it’s your turn to produce a flat plan / mock up for each page of your magazine. Look at what you have found in your research and use it to inform and influence your design. Your project should have a clear progression from research to planning and then to production.
Editor's Notes
- Incorporating an example picture and using fonts which I plan to use in the final piece has helped add depth to this flat plan. The footer also helps give a clear indication of the style of the magazine.
