The Production Cycle
Within the four stages of the design workflow there are two distinct parts.
The first three stages, as presented in Part B of this book, were described
as ‘The Hidden Thinking’ stages, as they are concerned with undertaking
the crucial behind-the-scenes preparatory work. You may have completed
them in terms of working through the book’s contents, but in visualisation
projects they will continue to command your attention, even if that is
reduced to a background concern.
You have now reached the second distinct part of the workflow which
involves developing your design solution. This stage follows a production
cycle, commencing with rationalising design ideas and moving through to
the development of a final solution.
The term cycle is appropriate to describe this stage as there are many loops
of iteration as you evolve rapidly between conceptual, practical and
technical thinking. The inevitability of this iterative cycle is, in large part,
again due to the nature of this pursuit being more about optimisation rather
than an expectation of achieving that elusive notion of perfection. Trade-
offs, compromises, and restrictions are omnipresent as you juggle ambition
and necessary pragmatism.
How you undertake this stage will differ considerably depending on the
nature of your task. The creation of a relatively simple, single chart to be
slotted into a report probably will not require the same rigour of a formal
production cycle that the development of a vast interactive visualisation to
be used by the public would demand. This is merely an outline of the most
you will need to do – you should edit, adapt and participate the steps to fit
with your context.
There are several discrete steps involved in this production cycle:
Conceiving ideas across the five layers of visualisation design.
Wireframing and storyboarding designs.
Developing prototypes or mock-up versions.

Testing.
Refining and completing.
Launching the solution.
Naturally, the specific approach for developing your design solution (from
prototyping through to launching) will vary hugely, depending particularly
on your skills and resources: it might be an Excel chart, or a Tableau
dashboard, an infographic created using Adobe Illustrator, or a web-based
interactive built with the D3.js library. As I have explained in the book’s
introduction, I’m not going to attempt to cover the myriad ways of
implementing a solution; that would be impossible to achieve as each task
and tool would require different instructions.
For the scope of this book, I am focusing on taking you through the first
two steps of this cycle – conceiving ideas and wireframing/storyboarding.
There are parallels here with the distinctions between architecture (design)
and engineering (execution) – I’m effectively chaperoning you through to
the conclusion of your design thinking.

A Multigenre Project (MGP) presents multiple, even conflicting, perspectives on a topic in order to provide a rich context and present an aesthetically appealing product for an audience. Your MGP should reflect the following:

A coherent organization/your entire MGP should be presented in an umbrella genre that best fits your purpose. You should create and organize documents in order to lead readers through the project, to help them understand your focus and purpose. Coherent organization will come out of the umbrella genre you choose for the project. For example, creating a magazine as the umbrella genre that includes articles, images, advertisements, etc. with one focus will provide cohesion to the project. Examples of how you might “package” the MGP include a CD, a scrapbook, a photo album, a patient file, an employee handbook, a manual, a newspaper, a magazine, a website—the options are endless! Just be sure to provide a table of contents (TOC) that offers an overview of and title for each document.

The Production Cycle
Within the four stages of the design workflow there are two distinct parts.
The first three stages, as presented in Part B of this book, were described
as ‘The Hidden Thinking’ stages, as they are concerned with undertaking
the crucial behind-the-scenes preparatory work. You may have completed
them in terms of working through the book’s contents, but in visualisation
projects they will continue to command your attention, even if that is
reduced to a background concern.
You have now reached the second distinct part of the workflow which
involves developing your design solution. This stage follows a production
cycle, commencing with rationalising design ideas and moving through to
the development of a final solution.
The term cycle is appropriate to describe this stage as there are many loops
of iteration as you evolve rapidly between conceptual, practical and
technical thinking. The inevitability of this iterative cycle is, in large part,
again due to the nature of this pursuit being more about optimisation rather
than an expectation of achieving that elusive notion of perfection. Trade-
offs, compromises, and restrictions are omnipresent as you juggle ambition
and necessary pragmatism.
How you undertake this stage will differ considerably depending on the
nature of your task. The creation of a relatively simple, single chart to be
slotted into a report probably will not require the same rigour of a formal
production cycle that the development of a vast interactive visualisation to
be used by the public would demand. This is merely an outline of the most
you will need to do – you should edit, adapt and participate the steps to fit
with your context.
There are several discrete steps involved in this production cycle:
Conceiving ideas across the five layers of visualisation design.
Wireframing and storyboarding designs.
Developing prototypes or mock-up versions.

Testing.
Refining and completing.
Launching the solution.
Naturally, the specific approach for developing your design solution (from
prototyping through to launching) will vary hugely, depending particularly
on your skills and resources: it might be an Excel chart, or a Tableau
dashboard, an infographic created using Adobe Illustrator, or a web-based
interactive built with the D3.js library. As I have explained in the book’s
introduction, I’m not going to attempt to cover the myriad ways of
implementing a solution; that would be impossible to achieve as each task
and tool would require different instructions.
For the scope of this book, I am focusing on taking you through the first
two steps of this cycle – conceiving ideas and wireframing/storyboarding.
There are parallels here with the distinctions between architecture (design)
and engineering (execution) – I’m effectively chaperoning you through to
the conclusion of your design thinking.

A Multigenre Project (MGP) presents multiple, even conflicting, perspectives on a topic in order to provide a rich context and present an aesthetically appealing product for an audience. Your MGP should reflect the following:

A coherent organization/your entire MGP should be presented in an umbrella genre that best fits your purpose. You should create and organize documents in order to lead readers through the project, to help them understand your focus and purpose. Coherent organization will come out of the umbrella genre you choose for the project. For example, creating a magazine as the umbrella genre that includes articles, images, advertisements, etc. with one focus will provide cohesion to the project. Examples of how you might “package” the MGP include a CD, a scrapbook, a photo album, a patient file, an employee handbook, a manual, a newspaper, a magazine, a website—the options are endless! Just be sure to provide a table of contents (TOC) that offers an overview of and title for each document.
Look at some of the examples posted on D2L for concrete depictions of how this can work.
The Multigenre Project includes at least 8 documents (including an Introduction, Table of Contents, 5 documents of different genres (not including your Introduction), and a works cited page) that offer a sustained argument about your chosen issue. By creating documents in different genres (e.g., editorials, feature stories, brochures, short fiction, charts, scripts, etc.), you learn to write for multiple audiences, multiple (rhetorical) purposes, and multiple forums. All documents/text must be original work you create for the MGP.

We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Phase 1 description
- 1. id 455Contract Interior Design 2 spring 2021 phase informa on phase descrip on P1 Project selec on, research and concept development due: 2.09.21 @ 1:00 p.m. 200 points In this phase you will select your project and begin to develop a relevant program. To this end, we will focus heavily on understanding the client/ organiza on and developing a sound, focused and concise design concept. This concept will be used throughout the project to evaluate the success of your design decisions. The outcome of this phase will be: P1a (3) three page research and visioning paper (50 pts) (not including cita ons) (1) spreadsheet establishing ini al project parameters (50 pts) P1b (1) 20” x 30” concept board and set of concept models (100 pts) (this board will be posted on e-campus for the remainder of the semester) Your concept will serve as the “research ques on” that will be used to focus your design ques ons and decisions from this point forward. Your concept will be constantly referred back to during every step along the process. To develop a good concept, you need to develop an understanding of what the client or organiza on is about. To do this you need to know what services they provide, what markets they serve, their missions/goals, etc. Researching other similar programs/organiza ons is also a good place to go to find this informa on. Your concept will be a SINGLE word. This word needs to encompass the goals, missions and ambi ons of the organiza on as well as providing a vehicle for you make sound and focused design decisions. You will need to inves gate the meaning of the word you choose to develop a complete understanding and determine its relevance to your project. Your inves ga ons/research of your concept word can involve sources directly related to design as well as your client/organiza on. You will also find value in looking at sources outside of design and the par cular field of your client. Specific requirements for the concept board, visioning paper and spreadsheet will follow.
- 2. visioning paper Your visioning paper will serve as a wri en presenta on of your design concept as well as your research findings rela ve to the development of your project parameters. The concept paper will be a (3) three page paper not including cita ons. It needs to be in 12 point Times New Roman, Arial or Calibri font with 1.5 spacing. In this paper you will present your research findings as well as the thoughts you had relevant to the development of your design concept. You will specifically at least the following issues: The client/organiza on (who is the project about/for) What is the client/organiza on vision? What or who is their market or clientele? Human-centered research and evidence in the development of an interior that would posi vely impact human experience, behavior, and performance typologies, spa al organiza on, and historical references You will also include the various defini ons you found for your word and explain which defini on is the most relevant for your project. You will also explain your (3) three terms of cri cism and how they are relevant for your project/client. This paper will follow either APA or MLA format. You must also use at least (10) ten sources (online sources, books, design journals, academic publica ons, etc.) Contract Interior Design 2 id 455 project spreadsheet Your project spreadsheet will be an ini al summary of the required elements/ spaces for your project. The spreadsheet will follow the parameters established below. Created in Excel and printed landscape on 8.5”x11” paper. List client/organiza on at the top with the name of the project. You should have the at least the following columns: - Room/space name
- 3. Contract Interior Design 2 id 455 concept board Your concept board will serve as the graphic method of explaining your design concept. It will be hung in the studio for the dura on of the semester and serve as a constant source of reflec on and focus. The concept board will be 20” x 30” and submi ed as a hardcopy on 1.30.20 @ 1:00 p.m. The concept board will include the following informa on: Concept Word (clearly stated) Concept defini on/s Inspira on imagery Three terms of cri cism (clearly stated) To improve your habits of inquiry and to establish cri cal reflec on, we will use “terms of cri cism” to evaluate the success of your design decisions. Terms of cri cism are statements that you develop during the concept development process. These are broad statements that help direct your design research, inquiry and decision making. They will also help direct the evalua on of you project by your peers and instructors. We will further discuss the terms of cri cism in class. - Equipment needed - remember you are required to have at least 1,500 sq. . space that accommodates contract furniture and have a minimum 12,000 GSF. Give a total approximate square footage at the bo om of the spreadsheet (total gross square feet). submission requirements Below are the specific submission requirements for this phase. P1a: Combine your research paper and spreadsheet into a single .pdf with the naming conven on p1a_surname.pdf and upload this to the P1a submission spot on e-campus. P1b: Submit a .pdf with the naming conven on p1b_surname.pdf to the P1b submission spot on e-campus.
