Presentation from a lesson I gave at Digital Accademia that shows an overview of how everything is changing and how it is growing.
Handheld apps that work by touch require you to design not only how your pixels look, but how they *feel* in the hand. This workshop explores the ergonomic challenges and interface opportunities for designing mobile touchscreen apps. Learn how fingers and thumbs turn desktop conventions on their head and require you to leave behind familiar design patterns. The workshop presents nitty-gritty "rule of thumb" design techniques that together form a framework for crafting finger-friendly interface metaphors, affordances, and gestures for a new generation of mobile apps that inform and delight. This is an intermediate to advanced workshop aimed at designers, developers, and information architects making the transition from desktop to touchscreen apps for mobile and tablet devices.
What will you learn?
■Discover the ergonomic demands of designing for touch.
■Find out how the iPad's form and size create unique design considerations.
■Devise interface metaphors that invite touch.
■Design gesture interactions, and learn techniques to help people discover unfamiliar gestures on their own.
■Learn why buttons are a hack and how to design interfaces without traditional UI controls.
■Train in gesture jiujitsu, the dark art of using awkward gestures for defensive design.
■Explore the psychology behind screen rotation and the opportunities and pitfalls it creates.
Talk I gave recently for some senior execs on getting started in social media. Why we share, what to share and how. Won't make so much sense without the commentary but hopefully some interesting slides...

Thad Starner (Georgia Institute of Technology) Symbiotic AI: Using Wearable Devices to Teach Computers how to Live in A Human World
Can we make an intelligent agent that senses the world from a human perspective - that sees as we see and hears as we hear - and from that data learns how to interact in a human world?
While AI has benefitted from images and data collected from the web, little of that data will help an AI understand how to shake hands, make coffee, turn a steering wheel, or comprehend the meaning of those actions. Wearable devices offer a unique opportunity for AI researchers to gather the "big data" needed to train an agent to understand the world in human terms. By placing cameras where the user's eyes are, microphones where the user's ears are, motion sensors on the wrists, and even brain activity sensors on the head, we can gather training data from a first person perspective that will help computers understand human activities and their social context. This work is already leading to intelligent assistants that can predict a user's needs, recognize sign language, and help people who are blind better sense the world around them.
The concept of work-life balance today is obsolete. This conference took a deeper look at people, projects, products, and services that we can all leverage to try to LIVE, WORK, and PLAY BETTER.

Why Mobile Social Media Matters - Statistics, Trends, TechnologiesDavid Berkowitz
This is a primer on mobile social media, including statistics, how people are using it, why people use it, and the future of mobile social media. While specific technologies and stats will change with any given month, the trends should prove to be more enduring.
Your feedback is welcome, whether via email (dberkowitz@360i.com), Twitter (@dberkowitz & @360i), or however else you choose.
Relationships and experiences are no longer virtual but due to the Social World they have become Real. Circles of Relationship (ask google +) have become tighter and one’s manifestation in the Social World is no longer a login ID but it is the portrayal of oneself. In fact, we stand at a turning point where the virtual world is no longer an extension of the brick and mortar world, but entities from the virtual world will soon be occupying physical space of the real world.
CIPR Fifth Estate - Voluntary Sector Group: "Social Media - an introduction"Bright One
Charities have grasped the opportunities that social media gives to communicate with their supporters, often being nimbler and more innovative than their private sector counterparts. Facebook and Twitter have become the dominant platforms, allowing charities to communicate directly with their supporters using rich and engaging content. But with new platforms on the rise - including social networks like Google+, mobile apps like Instagram, and devices liked the iPad - new and ever more divergent opportunities for stakeholder engagement are becoming apparent.
Whether communicating with donors, funders, government, internally or with 'free agents', charities face bigger challenges - and threats - more than ever. How can charities keep up with new technologies and platforms? What should their strategic approach be to ensure they are making the most of these opportunities? What are the risks and how can these be overcome?
The ultimate challenge for the current generation of interaction designers is to create a cohesive ecosystem of devices, web-connected objects and cloud services. Designing products in isolation is not the right approach. New paradigms are emerging. It is a great time to be a designer. These are the slides I used in my three-hour workshop at UXPA China. Hope you like it!

State of automation possibilities and some lesson learned while building Stamplay an API orchestration platform that help companies automating processes visually.
Messaging apps have surpassed social networks and they now aim to change the way brands communicate with consumers. An overview about the use cases and the technology that today is powering this once in a decade shift.
L’ utilizzo delle applicazioni di messaging ha superato quello dei social network. In che modo il modello dei chatbot sta cambiando le regole di engagement con i consumatori?
Presentation from my talk at APIDays+APIStrat in Berlin.
The API economy has emerged as an increasingly robust and important area of the tech landscape as APIs have proliferated.
APIs become fundamental building blocks in today’s software development process. They enable one company to solve a difficult software development challenge (e.g. cloud storage, in-app email, payments processing) and let other companies access that solution, rather than re-solve the same challenge during their own development process .
Today the best way to do business isn’t to build it all in-house. Top companies are increasingly piecing together a composite of APIs from specialized startups.
That lets them concentrate on their unique value-add rather than reinventing the wheel.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work.
