SPJ JournCamp 2015: Smarter Reporting with SmartphonesVictor Hernandez
Backpack Journalism in 2016 means running and gunning with smaller, better, faster, cheaper gear and workflow than ever before in the age of digital storytelling. During this interactive workshop, you’ll learn how to produce video content using the smartphone. Participants will be exposed to basic techniques on gathering quality sound bites and shooting compelling B-roll and "selfie stand-ups." You will learn to edit those assets into a short video package that can easily and immediately be shared online — therefore beating the pants off fellow journos using more traditional approaches.
The future of mobile is in wearable tech. What does the future hold for this technology? Will Latinos be early adopters?
Latinos and Mobile Technology kicks off on March 23rd, and you're invited to take part in the festivities. Coworking on 15th Ave (3428 North 15th Avenue) is our meeting spot for a night of fun and networking. So bring a guest, enjoy the free food and drinks, and have a great time.

A round up of resources (websites, blogs and other sources) that I've found useful in 2015 and will continue to do so in 2016. This edition is centered around 3 key trends for 2016.
This year is celebrating the tenth anniversary of the iPhone. What does it mean, a smartphone, in our lives in 2017-18?
As ex-Apple designer, let me show you few ideas that I've been talking and sharing in Leicester, Cracovia, Nantes...
How will 3D printers, tablets, life-saving forks, Google Glasses and the interest graph change the way you do business this year?
This presentation by Thomas Crampton and Hannah Law will show you 5 trends that will change the way you do digital marketing in 2013. We explain the trend, show you some early adopters (including Nike, IBM, Heineken and Burberry) and recommend how you can make the most of it.
The Lucky 5 trends that you need to know about in 2013 are:
1. Be mobile, not do mobile
2. Bricks and Bytes: create shopping experiences, not transactions
3. Brand-awakened: brands with a higher purpose rule
4. Live in 60 Seconds: concept to production at speed
5. Smart Data: Big Data’s older, wiser sister
In this presentation hat I gave at our Faber Portfolio day this year I am trying to build a model of how AI, Robotics and Conversational Interfaces will create a Superstack subsuming the current Internet and the majority of the global workforce.

Victor Hernandez, Banjo/ONA Las Vegas, and Greg Retsinas, KGW Media Group/ONA Portland
At the core of a good journalist is the ability to storytell, usually via the written word or a video package, but the emergence of live streaming has helped transform how stories are told. Further, everyday citizens are now going live to share their perspective and help journalists discover untold stories. This session brings together Victor Hernandez from ONA Las Vegas and Greg Retsinas from ONA Portland to discuss the state of the live streaming union, how it has influenced their perspective of covering stories, what it has done collectively for journalism and where trends may go next. This dynamic duo will also provide best practices for “going Live” and answer your questions.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Deepak Rai, Automation Practice Lead, Boundaryless Group and UiPath MVP
"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

25. THE GROWING IMPORTANCE OF MESSAGING APPS
In 2015, the number of active users on messaging apps surpassed
the number of users on traditional social media channels. As this
audience continues to grow, messaging apps will play an increasing
role in the distribution strategy of brands and publishers.
Some brands have already started to explore this space, leveraging
unique features of different messaging applications to experiment
with new storytelling methods and community-building.

37. NY TIMES
FLIPBOARD
YAHOO NEWS DIGEST
WASHINGTON POST
The Times has developed a new form of storytelling to help readers catch up in seconds. Through its one-sentence stories, crafted especially for the
small screen of Apple Watch, users are able to get the news at a glance across many sections from the Times along with photography and short,
bulleted summaries.
Flipboard algorithmically chooses the top 10 stories based on the top 10 topics a user follows on Flipboard, and then present these
dynamically on the Apple Watch.
With speed reading, Yahoo News for Apple Watch flashes one word in a sentence before quickly moving to the next word. It helps me read
passages more quickly, and is oddly compelling on the tiny screen.
“Big Story, Small Screen” design allows users to quickly browse the day’s big story via a customized format highlighting the top story
through bold images and brief text, giving readers a way to catch up on the news in six scrolls.

• Get yourself organized! Use folders on your smartphone.
• Airplane mode is awesome when shooting (avoid interruptions)

61. PERISCOPE BEST PRACTICES
Try to stay steady - use a monopod, or tripod if you have
Maximize on multitasking - stream, narrate, interview ppl, note usernames
Movement is good, listen, interact - provide true experiential!
Keep the commentary going - remind frequently what audience is tuned into
Remember to save your stream - might want later for B-roll or as video with story
