This document proposes using low-cost disposable mobile relays to reduce the energy consumption of data-intensive wireless sensor networks. Unlike previous approaches, it does not require complex motion planning of mobile nodes. It integrates the energy costs of mobility and wireless transmissions into an optimization framework. This framework includes algorithms to compute an optimal routing tree, improve the topology by adding mobile nodes, and improve the tree by relocating nodes without changing topology. Simulation results show this approach significantly outperforms existing solutions.
